The present work is concerned with selective dissolution of niobium from Gabal El Faliq concentrate sample by using fluoridefree process. The chemical analysis of concentrate sample revealed the presence of high amount of ZrO2, Nb2O5, Re2O3, and HfO2 assaying 33.6, 1.99, 4.8, and 1.2%w/w respectively. Several economic minerals including zircon, samarskite, fergusonite, and xenotimewere recorded in the studied sample. About 98%of Nb content was selectively dissolved at the optimumconditions of 1:2 concentrate sample: KOH weight ratio, 2.5 h fusion time, and fusion temperature of 550 °C. Organic solvent extraction process using Aliquat 336S in xylene was effectively used for preparing pure Nb2O5 (98.95%).

"The Bankei-Kitanosawa tunnel that is located in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan includes a 450m long section near the arrival point where mudstone which can liquate out natural hazardous materials such as arsenic and selenium exceeding the tolerance stipulated by country as well as weathered mudstone and unconsolidated sedimentary rocks with small overburden and the competence factor less than 1.0 are present. The mucks containing hazardous materials were disposed into the waterproof branch tunnels created from the inside of the main tunnel. The full face early ring closure method was employed to ensure the stability of the tunnel in the low strength rock masses having no stand-up time. As a result, the waterproof tunnels branching off the main tunnel can manage water tightness so as to ensure safety and relief against environmental risks of the hazardous materials. It is also demonstrated that the full face early ring closure method enable construction of the tunnel with a small overburden in the low strength rock masses. In order to overcome the restrictions, the hazardous materials were designed to be disposed into large cross section waterproof tunnels which were newly designed and constructed in high strength and hazardous material free Andesite. The lining for the tunnels was composed of with shotcrete. In addition, full face early ring closure (Sato et al., 2013) was employed to stabilize the tunnel so as to enable safe tunnel excavation in low strength rock masses where a ground arch is deemed unachievable. This paper presents the safe disposal method of mucks which are likely to liquate out natural hazardous materials as well as the full face early ring closure method and its mechanical characteristics."

Coal ribs present a major safety hazard in underground mines, and there is currently no unified approach for their design in the United States. To tackle this issue, this study investigated the stability of underground coal pillar ribs under development load. Utilizing over a thousand 3DEC models, a framework for calculating coal pillar rib rating (CPRR) was developed. A detailed step-by-step method was outlined for computing the CPRR based on a 3DEC analysis, which was then validated with various 3DEC models, demonstrating a strong correlation between the two models. The results demonstrated that the rib factor of safety (RibFOS) under development load is directly proportional to CPRR, coal mine roof rating (CMRR), and floor strength, and inversely proportional to the overburden depth and rib height. Moreover, a regression equation was formulated to predict the RibFOS based on the aforementioned parameters. Furthermore, empirical relationships were developed between the RibFOS and the applied primary rib support density (PRSD) in U.S. coal mines. To ease the calculations, a stand-alone application, Design of Rib Support (DORS), was developed. This application can be used to assess rib stability and easily calculate CPRR, RibFOS, and PRSD.

The earliest recorded history in the use of belt conveyors in the United States is in O. Evans' "Miller's Guide" published in Philadelphia in 1795. Evans defines a conveyor as a "broad endless strap of thin pliant leather or canvas revolving over two pulleys in a case or trough." (Ref. 1) In this definition, pulleys are being used in a bulk material belt conveyor application. Pulleys used in belt drives can trace their origin back to 1200 A.D. In fact, Engineers had considerable experience designing them into drives transmitting greater horsepower than those used in the early belt conveyors. In belt conveyor application, a pulley's purpose is primarily three-fold, 1) support the belt in directional changes, as designed in the conveyor, 2) transmit driving power to the belt, and 3) guide or train the belt. There are various types of pulleys used in belt conveyor systems and these are thoroughly covered in "Belt Conveyors For Bulk Materials" prepared by CEMA, 1966. For our discussion, however, the most common used in belt conveyors are drive pulleys, snub pulleys, head pulleys, tail pulleys, takeup pulleys and bend pulleys. The drive pulley imparts the driving force to the belt and may be located at the head or discharge end of the conveyor, in return strand, or at the tailor loading end of the conveyor. "Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, 226 active mines and mills were registered in New Mexico and included four coal, eight potash, 11 metal, 33 industrial mineral and 170 aggregate and stone operations. New Mexico leads U.S. domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica and decorative stone. New Mexico also has the potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REEs), niobium and zircon, and other REE deposits are being explored. REE-thoriumuranium veins have been found in the Gallinas, Capitan and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Exploration for beryllium has occurred in the Ojo Caliente No. 2, Cuchillo Negro and Victorio mining districts. Companies also are examining high-calcium limestone and high-magnesium dolomite for potential development, while aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. IntroductionIndustrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life. They are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics to refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate nearly every aspect of daily life, their presence and their roles are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the nonmetallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a byproduct of cleaning natural gas, one of the world’s major energy fuels.Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 41 percent of the more than $3.1 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2014 (Table 1). In 2014, 226 active mines and mills were registered in New Mexico and included four coal, eight potash, 11 metal, 33 industrial mineral and 170 aggregate and stone operations (New Mexico Mining and Minerals Division, 2015a). One possible alternative for disposal of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) by-products is use as backfilling support material in highwall mine adits. The finite element method was used to analyze the variation of stresses and displacements within and around a highwall adit backfilled with FGD materials. The engineering properties of the rock material and the optimum mix proportioning of the FGD materials were obtained from laboratory tests. Finite element analyses show that, for the case in question, the roof displacement would decrease about 48 percent and the peak stress could be decreased about 58 percent. The study indicates that fairly weak FGD materials can eventually lead to stability of backfilled highwall adits.

As noted by McKinstry (1948), "How to deal with erratic high samples is one of the knottiest problems in ore estimation." He described a variety of approaches and methods to alleviate the problem through the averaging and weighing of assay data and by "cutting" or "clipping" of the erratic assays. Bird (1991) elaborated on ways of dealing with the nugget effect (erratics). He listed several procedures for cutting. Bird's list has been reproduced and/or added to by several authors including Vallee (1992) and Stone and Dunn (1993). Missing from each of these otherwise excellent reviews is a definition, description or guideline to recognition of an "erratic," or just where or when cutting is warranted or justified.

The designers of the new Arafertil concentrator in Brazil provided for complete automatic control of the grinding circuit to meet the operating objective of maximum throughput at a specified grind. Analog control methods were selected because of proven reliability and simple maintenance, and in order to minimize commissioning time and effort. This paper summarizes the step-by-step effort required to progress from local loop control of certain individual parameters to an integrated system capable of achieving the design goal. Emphasis is placed on the practical aspects of commissioning a control system.

Injuries due to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are not uncommon in heavy industry like mining. Researchers acknowledged that occupational exposure to ergonomic risk factors is the chief causative factor in the development ofWMSDs. The aim of this study was to perform an ergonomic assessment of musculoskeletal disorders among surface mine workers in India. Standardized Nordic Questionnaire was used to collect subjective response from 500 workers. A stratified random sampling method according to surface mining work activity type was used to obtain the sample. Data was collected by means of a structured questionnaire, and the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze data using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. A response rate of 85% was obtained out of 500 targeted groups. TheWMSDs prevalence for the 12-month period was estimated to be 44.23%. The mean and standard deviation of workers’ age were 41.31and 8.927, respectively. The study has shown that the operators of dumpers, dozers, and graders along with electricians were found to be the most susceptible to developWMSD problems. Among the most affected body parts, back disorder reported the highest. Further, it was found that working with static posture over the longer duration has a significant association with the lower back disorder (with p = 0.020) and bouncing and jarring has also significantly associated with the lower back disorder (with p = 0.023). Similarly, a significant association was found between repetitive work and neck pain (with p = 0.016). The study depicted a significant association between ergonomic hazards and WMSDs, like working with prolonged static posture, bouncing and jarring, and repetitive work.

The passage of an ore pulp through the froth flotation process results in the production, after dewatering, of a finely divided concentrate. This intermediate product Trust be handled to the subsequent process facilities via belt or other types of conveyors, hoppers, bins, chutes and feeders, and the like, Flotation concentrate has some difficult handling properties such as abrasiveness, sluggishness when moist, or fluidity when dry, These characteristics require the judicious selection or design of handling, equipment and the careful engineering of transfer chutes. It is to the special problems which are encountered in this in-plant handling procedure that this paper is addressed. The methods which will be discussed have beer. developed primarily for the handling of the froth flotation concentrates of copper, leap, and taconite iron ores, but may be generalized, with appropriate modifications, to apply to other similar metallic concentrate&. The controlled feeding of concentrates frog: bins and hoppers is covered alone with some of the techniques used to transfer concentrates from ore belt conveyor to another. Methods are described for unloading belt conveyors into bins or storage tiles, The reclamation from storage piles is also treated.

This paper describes the research con-ducted on bit wear and respirable dust generation conducted by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and West Virginia University (WVU), a member of the Generic Technology Center on Respirable Dust. The USBM investigated wear, energy and dust characteristics of various conical bit designs when cutting rock. WVU studied the functional relationships between wear, cutting force, energy, and dust of one conical bit type when cutting coal. The objective of the USBM study was to identify qualitative bit selection guidelines for cut-ting rock; WVU's research objective was to determine optimum bit replacement guidelines. These research studies both found that bit geometry (a function of bit design and wear) influences energy consumption and dust generation. Bit selection and replacement recommendations are given.

ASARCO Incorporated has upgraded or is in the process of upgrading the Galena mine electrical, pumping, refrigeration, compressed air, ventilation, hoisting and rockburst monitoring systems to allow continued mining and development work on the 1 589-m (5,200-ft.) level and to provide services for projected deeper mining and development. Additionally, a separate lead-silver milling circuit has been added to the silver-copper mill to process lead-silver ore reserves. This paper describes completed and planned improvements made to date on these systems.

Results of a long-term program of electrical parameter measurement in under-ground coal mine working sections, performed by The Pennsylvania State University under U. S. Bureau of Mines sponsorship, are utilized as the basis for an analysis of the electrical energy requirements during operation. A model section is hypothesized, developed from the average or most representative characteristics as determined from tabulations of the measurements. Performance factors of the model section's machine complement are then analyzed, particularly with regard to the energy required per ton of raw coal cut and delivered from the section. Results are given in kilowatt-hours per ton.

This paper addresses the problem of seeing into rock. We will consider two methods, first to use radar, or electromagnetic wave pulses, to probe into rock ahead of mining and second to use sonar, or sound wave pulses, to probe into rock. Both are non destructive and capable of giving information on hazards ahead of mining. Such hazards might be a borehole full of water possibly leading to a high pressure aquifer somewhere above the mine level, changes in rock type, or the edge or top of a salt dome. Most of the work described in this paper deals with probing through rock salt which we have done successfully to over 2000 meters maximum range. We discuss first the radar probing and then the sonar probing. 13.1-SUBSIDENCE AND GROUND MOVEMENT ROBERT STEFANKO 13.1.1-SUBSIDENCE AND FAILURE This treatment of subsidence and ground movement will be confined to subsidence control for limiting surface damage by assessing the significant parameters affecting ground movements during mining to optimize mining techniques. The material will be equally applicable to evaporite mining as well as coal but will not deal with block caving or similar systems where failure is deliberately induced and surface protection is not necessary or provided. When an underground opening is established, the original equilibrium is disturbed with resultant stress concentrations. While many factors are involved in opening stability, the span (W) undoubtedly is one of the most important factors in failure. Assuming it is relatively small, the overlying rock strata can bridge across the opening and little if any movement or convergence of top and bottom will occur. However, as the span increases, a point is reached where the stress in the overlying rock strata exceeds some strength value of the rock, and the top breaks. If the opening span is limited to some subcritical value (-We) and/or is at great depth (D), a pseudo-arch will form, achielring stability before rupture occurs to the surface. The boundary of this arch is thought to approximate an ellipse in form with the major axis vertical and equal to four times W, although there has been little field research to substantiate this theory. However, if the width of this opening is increased at this horizon to some critical value (W,) or the same span is created in a shallower seam, the overlying strata ill progressively rupture to the surface and the characteristic subsidence trough is formed (Fig. 13-1) The area of the surface affected is much greater than the area of the seam extracted, depending on the "angle of draw" (a), which is the angle between a vertical line from the edge of the opening and another line extended to a point at which subsidence tails out to zero. This angle has been found to be about 35° in Europe but is rather academic, being a function of instrument precision in detecting subsidence. Since the subsidence effect is so small at any point beyond n 25° angle, this latter may be considered the practical limit of subsidence. Further- more, indications are that the angle of draw varies with depth and nature of the strata.' In a field study over a 1,000-ft-deep potash mine in New Mexico, the maximum angle of draw was found to be 51.5°.2 So far, only a single opening has been considered. However, the width of the excavation applies to any complex mining system of entries, rooms and longwalls as long as the seam has been fully extracted and the width represents the distance from one solid rib to another. It will be noted that the amount of vertical displacement varies from point to point on the surface (s), but the maximum subsidence for a given trough occurs at the center (S). This latter value may not he equal to the maximum possible subsidence (Sm) which occurs only if a critical or super- critical (+W,) width has been exceeded (Fig. 13-1). Substantial surface damage can result when subsidence occurs. Factors affecting the amount and type of ground movement are: thickness and properties of the seam, angle of draw, width of excavation, depth and type of overburden, inclinations of strata and surface, and the amount of support left in the gob. This study presents a method for recovering valuable metals and synthesizing anhydrite from steel slag using sulfuric acid leaching and solvent extraction. The process achieved high leaching efficiencies for V, Ti, Fe, and Mg, and produced anhydrite with 93.09% purity. The leachate was further processed to separate and recover V, Ti, Fe, and Mg using selective stripping and precipitation methods, offering a sustainable approach to steel slag utilization.

"The mining of tabular deposits accounts for a significant portion of modern production in both underground hard rock and especially, soft rock mining. There is a large discrepancy between the availability of tabular reserves and the amount of development of these deposits, particularly when the deposit has a dip of around 25-50 degrees. This project studied the technical and practical barriers to the mining of these deposits through modern and historical case studies. The primary technical barriers to the development of these deposits are material movement and roof support. The study of historical attempts overcome these barriers and why they failed allowed us to research the possibility of implementing modern technology on previously unsuccessful methods. By modifying some common mining methods, some of these deposits can be mined at only a marginal increase in cost and using readily available equipment. These modified mining methods could make previously underdeveloped deposits to become viable. INTRODUCTION Tabular deposits are defined as orebodies that extend at least hundreds of meters along two dimensions, and a substantially smaller amount along another [1]. Moderately bedded tabular deposits are mined less often than their more horizontal counterparts due to the technical issues they present. These issues often cause lower productivity, higher cost, and more frequent accidents. Moderate dip is a less well defined term; but in this case, it will refer to any deposit which has a dip of at least 20°. This paper will focus on deposits that dip around 25°-50° and are deep enough to require underground excavation methods. These deposits are too steep for most conventional methods yet not steep enough for gravity fed methods to work efficiently. In some cases, this dip range is also referred to as intermediate or steeply dipping. The types of deposits most likely to fall into this category are sedimentary bedded deposits such as coal, trona, evaporates, placers, and other alluvial deposits. Some other types of deposits can fall into this category as well. These include some of the metal reefs such as the Bushveld Complex in South Africa, which was deposited by lava flows, but is tabular. Some areas have dips that fall into the moderately inclined category. There are also some metamorphic deposits such as slate or marble that can have dips of more than 20°. The dip angle of these deposits can cause several challenges. Ore movement becomes more difficult as the exceeds the limits of conventional conveyors, rubber-tired, or tracked vehicles. At the same time the dip is below the angle of repose of the material. This prevents gravity assisted haulage, as the ore and waste will not run downhill by itself. Another common problem in moderately inclined underground mines is roof support. The dip angle can increase the risk of pillar and support failure. This is due to slippage between rock layers, non-perpendicular support of the vertical stresses, and slippage of standing supports. The inclination leads to stresses that are not usually found in typical horizontally bedded deposits. These stresses may require larger pillars that may reduce ore recovery below profitable levels."

Two types of airflow splitting methods for improving longwall dust control were investigated by NIOSH's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. These methods included a translucent mesh barrier and a staged spray barrier system to confine the shearer-generated dust to the coal extraction side of the long wall face while maintaining a cleaner split of airflow on the opposing worker walkway side of the longwall face. The translucent mesh barrier was shown to provide notable dust control effectiveness up to 60 m downstream of the shearer in both the laboratory experiments and a long wall field evaluation, provided the mesh barrier remains relatively parallel to the airflow. The staged spray barrier system showed marginal dust control effectiveness in the laboratory and subsequently was not field tested.

Volcanic ash, although a little-used Kansas resource, is available in forty counties with estimated, reserves of more than 20 million tons. It was first produced in Kansas in the early 1900?s but not until the early 1920 is did it become an important abrasive material. Total production to date is estimated at 2 million tons, the major use being as an abrasive in scouring compounds and soaps, additional uses include ceramic glazes, an additive in cement, and a filler and stabilizer in hot mix asphalt for paving. Unrecorded tonnages have also been used in construction of black-top (macadam) roads. From 1916 through 1944, Kansas ranked first among the states in volcanic ash production; peak production was about 52, 000 tons in 1923. Since 1945, production has steadily declined, primarily because materials other than volcanic ash are now being used for abrasives; only two producers operated in 1964.
