"From June 16 to 19, more than 1,400 tunneling and underground construction professionals gathered in Chicago, IL for the bienial Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC). There, they were greeted by a full technical program and an exciting exhibit hall that provided a comprehensive look at the world’s bustling tunneling and underground construction industry.The successful conference was a reflection of the industry itself, which is to say, busy. As much of the world has begun to focus on creating a cleaner and greener environment, the global tunneling industry has seen an uptick in infrastructure projects move from design-build to construction phase. With a global shift away from the use of fossil fuels, major cities around the world are looking to increase public transportation options, which leads to the need for more transportation tunnels. And as urban populations continue to grow, the need for clean water calls for more tunnels, and as urban footprints continue to expand, the need to increase and update combined sewage overflow tunnel grows with them.During two and a half days, more than 20 sessions covering all of these topics were presented at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago, many to packed rooms in which every seat was taken and people were standing along the side and back walls.RETC is a biennial conference and one of the largest in the North America for the tunneling and underground construction industries. As such, it hosts a robust exhibit floor. This year 172 vendors occupied 205 booth spaces. The exhibit included everything from tunnel boring machine manufacturers, like Robbins and Herrenknecht, to the companies that supply all kinds of parts and services to the industry."

A 0.5 m (20 in) diameter high pressure natural gas pipeline crosses over a coal mine located in Central Utah. Ground movement induced by the mining operation could possibly place excessive strain on the pipeline causing it to rupture. The mining operation extracts coal from two seams using the room and pillar method. The seams are situated one on top of the other and both lie directly under the pipeline. At present, only the upper seam is being mined beneath the pipeline. However, in the future, the mining operation of the lower seam will also affect the pipeline. As would be expected, mining of both coal seams causes surface subsidence. This is especially true when the pillars are extracted during retreat.

"Western Coal" in this paper is limited to those deposits of subbituminous coal and lignite in the States of Montana, Wyoming, and North Dakota. The characteristics of the coal are discussed as well as the history of mining and current mining operations for steam coal. The future of the region is tied closely to the ultimate conversion of coal to oil and gas products. Problems of industrial water supply and environmental considerations are covered together with a brief review of current legislation's actions affecting strip mining.

The Flotaire Flotation Cell is a simple, efficient hydraulic/pneumatic Flotation Cell that has no moving parts. It is normally used in conjunction with a surfactant (frother) in which case the combination is known as "The Flotaire System". On many ores, metallurgical efficiencies are substantially increased and operating costs reduce. For example, in floating phosphate rock, it is not unusual for BPL recovery to be increased more than 10%, the major increase being due to floating coarse phosphate, up to 14 mesh, and the difficult to float phosphate. Substantial improvements have also been made on coal, mica, vermiculite, kaolin, barite, copper, etc.

Surface subsidence that results from longwall mining can be large magnitude and can affect significant areas. Conventional methods for subsidence monitoring include leveling, global positioning system (GPS), and photogrammetric surveys. Remote sensing techniques, including aerial LiDAR, terrestrial laser scanning, and satellite-based differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR), are also used to measure deformation associated with subsidence. DInSAR data are different than data from conventional subsidence surveys. Images capture data over large areas (hundreds of kilometers), and each pixel (data point) in an image quantifies the average displacement over an area of square meters. DInSAR data can have fairly high time resolution; imaging periods typically range from weeks to months.

Roof bolter operators may be exposed to high respirable dust concentrations on continuous miner sections with blowing face ventilation when bolting is performed downwind of the continuous miner. One solution to reduce the high respirable dust concentrations is to use a canopy air curtain (CAC) to deliver clean air from a filtered blower fan directly to the bolter operators under the canopies. The influence of CAC installation in the airflow and dust dispersion around the location of the roof bolter operator can be evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This study, performed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), considers two scenarios: (1) a roof bolting machine in the center of the entry for installation of the fifth row of bolts from the face, and (2) a roof bolting machine positioned close to the face for the installation of the last row of bolts. In both scenarios, the bolting machine is placed in an environment which contains 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust and is ventilated by a blowing curtain with 3000 cfm (1.42 m3 /s) of air. This environment is used to simulate the roof bolter machine operating downstream of a continuous mining machine. Two operation positions are simulated at the same bolting location: dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts and dual drill heads in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3 /s).

P.T. Freeport Indonesia's latest expansion has increased total mill throughput to 125,000 dry metric tonnes per day. The most recent expansion included the installation of a Semi Autogenous Mill designed to treat more ore than any other single SAG mill currently operating in the world. Also included in the expansion were two large ball mills, rougher and cleaner flotation including conventional and column cells and a regrind circuit. All equipment is supported by a modem distributed control system. This paper describes the design considerations, construction, commissioning and start-up of the SAG concentrator and support facilities and includes an overview of the oreflow and milling facilities.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has recently developed a rock mass classification system for evaluating the structural competency of bedded roof strata; the Coal Mine Roof Rating, or CMRR. When compiled with the companion Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet, which is simple to learn and use, CMRR data are a useful tool with applications to longwall gate road pillar design, safety hazard mapping, and artificial roof support analysis. This paper demonstrates these applications under actual conditions found in current U.S. mining operations.

Anthracite mine refuse, or culm dump material as it is sometimes called, is the waste material resulting from the sizing and cleaning of run-of-mine deep and strip-mined anthracite coal. It may also contain mine rock, carbonaceous shale, pyrite, and other debris from mining operations. This material is generally stored in piles or banks, some of which are over 100 years old. Many of the older banks contain a considerable amount of good coal, particularly in the finer size ranges, since these sizes did not have any particular economic value in the early days of anthracite mining. Today, the refuse material from a cleaning operation must be piled in an orderly fashion and in such a way as to minimize the tendency to ignite. There are well over 400 of these banks in the anthracite region containing over 1100 million tons of refuse located in the north-eastern part of Pennsylvania. Tunnel and shaft plugs have been designed to assist in construction of new and rehabilitation of existing tunnels and shafts. Tunnel plugs have been used to provide construction access for side by side tunnels, separation of raw and treated water, and to allow operation of one tunnel during construction of a nearby tunnel. Shaft plugs have been used to seal up surface openings to tunnels and to prevent seepage of water to the surface through adjacent tunnels or shafts. The design construction details of tunnel and shaft plugs are provided. Typical examples of tunnel and shaft plugs are provided.

Scattered north and south along a 161-km (100-mile) stretch of Interstate 80, Newmont Min¬ing Corp. owns four active mining properties in Nevada?s northern high desert ? Carlin Trend Operations, Midas, Twin Creeks and Phoenix. Among the four, there are nine openpits, five underground mines and 14 processing facilities. While gold is the predominant ore, silver and copper are also produced. And in a move to hold down energy costs, Newmont built and owns the 200-MW (net), coal-fired TS power plant. This plant provides about 65 percent of the power used for Newmont?s own operations, while the rest is sold to NV Energy, which services Nevada and northeastern California. Bringing the Phoenix Mine ? Newmont?s newest in Nevada ? on-line presented many developmental and operational challenges. Located about 19 km (12 miles) southwest of the town of Battle Mountain, the general area had been home to prospectors and other mining companies since the 1860s. But any profitability in developing the lower grade gold, copper and silver deposit at Phoenix proved elusive, with Battle Mountain Gold being the last company to make an attempt. When Newmont acquired Battle Mountain Gold and its Phoenix reserves in 2001, the lower grade of ore was not a deterrent. Newmont found Nevada-wide cost savings synergies for maximizing profit during the depressed gold market of the late 1990s. The new property was aptly renamed the Phoenix Mine, a nod to its rising from the ashes of the dreams and efforts of previous mine owners.

The Millenbach copper-zinc orebody is an ideal Canadian example of a stratabound base metal deposit in volcanic rocks. The mine, operated by Lake Dufault Divison, Falconbridge Copper Ltd. is located five miles north of the city of Noranda in northwestern Quebec. The deposit occurs within an Archean volcanic sequence which forms part of regional acidic volcanic center within the Abitibi greenstone belt. Preproduction ore reserves totalled 2,075,000 tons grading 3.5% copper, 3.6% zinc, 1.1 ounces per ton silver, and 0.02 ounces per ton gold. Stratabound lenses of massive sulphides together with underlying stringer sulphides are closely associated with a dome of quartz-feldspar porphyritic rhyolite approximately 3000 feet below surface. The paper describes the presently known geology of the deposit and includes documentation of sulphide mineralogy and textures as well as sulphide/ host rock relationships. The stratigraphy, petrography and chemistry of the volcanic host rocks are described with emphasis on the alteration intimately associated with the sulphide bodies. Although the volcanic stratigraphy is complex within the mine area, the presence of only low-grade metamorphism and the relative lack of structural deformation allow detailed interpretation of geological history. Presently recognized evidence strongly suggests that the sulphides were deposited at and near sea-floor, by hydrothermal solutions. The dome of porphyritic rhyolite appears to have been the most significant factor controlling sulphide localization.

Shield leg pressure data from all shields and shearer locationwith time stamp from a mechanized longwall face are monitored and recorded in a surface computer. These data contain random noise due to power failure, leakage of legs, bad sensor reading and other maintenance or geo-mechanical problems. An algorithm is developed to detect mining cycle parameters such as setting and final pressures and duration of the cycle from these data for the analysis of periodic roof weighting phenomena. The intensities and persistence of periodic roof weighting are the vital information to the mine management to take judicious decision on longwall operation. The paper presents details of the algorithm which identifies 96% of mining cycles from the noisy data belonging to consecutive 5 months or 410 m of face advancement. Based on this analysis, 2 types of periodic roof weighting phenomena are detected, namely, (i) normal type—having peak intensity of 75 to 90% of yield pressure, interval of occurrences of about 10 to 15 m with persistence of 3 to 4 m and (ii) severe type—peak intensity over 90% of yield pressure, interval of 25 to 40 m with persistence of over 10 m. It is envisaged that these phenomena have direct relationship with main roof thickness, its overhung length and material properties.

Recent NIOSH published information has shown an increase of rapidly progressive coal workers? pneumoconiosis (CWP) in the southern Appalachian coal region (SAR) of the U.S., despite the fact that compliance data indicates that most coal miners have been exposed to coal mine dust concentrations below the statutory limit of 2 mg/m³. While the exact cause of these elevated CWP levels in the SAR has not been established, several factors may be contributing to the increase in occupational lung disease among coal miners. The mining of high rank coal is known to lead to higher CWP rates, and this type of coal is mined in a portion of this region. Also, a high percentage of the mines in the region are on reduced dust standards because of the high silica content of the airborne dust resulting in miners possibly being exposed to excessive amounts of respirable silica dust. Exposure to excessive amounts of respirable silica dust can lead to silicosis, a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease. NIOSH?s Respiratory Hazards Control Branch has been investigating the possible causes that would account for the observed higher trends in disease progression through literature review, data analysis and in-mine surveying. The investigation to date has revealed that underground mines are faced with cutting large amounts of rock in order to maintain haulage clearances. Cutting rock not only increases the potential for silica exposure, it increases the requirement for machine maintenance, which was a concern observed during dust surveys conducted by NIOSH. Over half of the mines operating in the SAR are on reduced standards due to high silica content. Adequate face ventilation of the continuous miner and roof bolter and limited down-wind operations from the miner are also issues of concern and items that require the constant attention of miners operating in these conditions.

The Richmond Hill Mine has recently completed a reclamation plan to mitigate Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) which was identified at the toe of the former waste rock pile in 1992. Reclamation activities began in 1994 with the removal of ARD material from the waste rock pile and placement of this material in the former pit. This material was then isolated from the near surface environment by a low permeability capping system designed to minimize water and oxygen flow into the material. The capping system consists of, from bottom to top, six inches of limestone, 18 inches of low permeability clay liner, 4 and one-half feet of thermal barrier/drain layer, and six inches of topsoil. This capping system was completed in 1995. An extensive program is in place to monitor the effectiveness of the reclamation plan, and includes measurements on moisture content movement, temperature, oxygen content, and groundwater impacts. Monitoring has been ongoing since the completion of reclamation. This monitoring plan is demonstrating the success in isolating the material from the near surface environment and minimizing the impacts to the surrounding environment.

Introduction Gold mining on an industrial scale is becoming increasingly dependent on low-grade refractory sulfide ores that contain large amounts of pyrite (FeS2) and arsenopyrite (FeAsS). Gold is usually present as sub-microscopic particles dispersed evenly throughout the sulfide matrix. Without some form of preoxidation, efficient recovery of this finely disseminated gold through cyanide leaching is hampered because the surface of the sulfide particle becomes passivated and impervious to penetration of the cyanide. Traditional methods for recovery of refractory gold from arsenopyrite ores include roasting and autoclave leaching. A modem alternative method is to preoxidize the mineral using the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans prior to attempting to re- cover the gold through cyanidation. The bioleaching of arsenopyrite ores presents a problem in the mobilization of large quantities of arsenic, present both in the +5 and +3 ionic states. Dissolved arsenic species pose a dual problem: they are -1 to the bioleaching process itself through inhibition of bacterial activity, and they also pose an environmental threat. The arsenate anion (AsO2) has been shown to be more toxic to living organisms, including Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, than the arsenate anion (AsO43) (Collinet and Morin, 1989). There is some disagreement as to the fate of arsenite in bioleaching solution. Mandl, Matulova, and Docekalova (1992) reported that dissolved arsenite concentration was constant during a long-term bioleaching study of chalcopyrite using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Torma and Oolman (1992) report that Thiobacillus ferrooxidans has been found capable of oxidizing As3+ to As5+. The solid products of arsenopyrite/pyrite bioleaching include jarosite (MFe3(SO4)2(OH)6 where M can be K+, Na+, NH4+ or H3O+), scorodite (FeAsO4.2H2O), ferric hydroxides, and ferric hydroxysufites (Carlson et. al., 1992; Van Breemen, 1982; Lazaroff et. al., 1982). The particular species formed is a function mainly of pH. Little study has been performed on the effect of solid products on bioleaching. Pesic and Kim (1993) showed that Thiobacillus ferrooridans cells served as a nucleation sites for jarosite particles, which grew rapidly and eventually killed the cell. Most bioleaching studies are performed at low pH&apos;s (<2.0) under uncontrolled conditions. By studying bioleaching of arsenopyrite under controlled pH conditions and at higher pH&apos;s (2.0 to 3.0), the distribution of iron and arsenic between the solid and liquid phases can be controlled, and their effects studied. The objective is to develop a bioleaching process that operates at high efficiency while keeping amounts of dissolved heavy metals low. Pesic, Stohok, and Torma (1993) demonstrated the usefulness of this approach in the leaching of cobaltite (CoAsS) concentrates. Materials and Methods The focus of this study was the bioleaching of arsenopyrite ore by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The parameters studied included the effects of pH, and the effects of arsenate (AsO43 and arsenite (AsO2). pH studies included pH set initially but not controlled, and pH controlled continuously with NaOH or LiOH. Bioleaching results from two strains of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans with different adaptation histories were compared. Bioleaching experiments were conducted in 150 ml stirred glass reactors using a strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans adapted to arsenopyrite ore, supplied by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. These bioreactors were innoculated with stock cells grown on arsenopyrite ore for 14-16 days. Typical elemental breakdown for this ore was: As, 9.90%; Fe, 18.60%, Stot, 9.26%; Suifide, 7.50%; SiO2, 25.90%. Mineralogically, the ore contained both arsenopyrite and pyrite. Bioleaching efficiency was measured by withdrawing bioleach solution samples at selected intervals, filtering, and measuring the amount of dissolved cobalt, iron, and arsenic by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Because the precipitation of iron and arsenic at higher pH&apos;s would lead to unreliable results, a 100 mg tracer of cobaltite concentrate from the Blackbird mine in southern Idaho was added to solution. Dissolution of the cobaltite tracer was used to indicate bioleaching of the bulk arsenopyrite ore. On June 25, 1999, BHP Billiton (BHPB) announced the suspension of operations at the BHP Copper Inc.(BHP) San Manuel copper mine in Pinal County, Arizona. Subsequent to this announcement, BHPB aggressively pursued a number of alternatives for the underground mine and open pit facilities, including continued curtailed operations, sale to a qualified mining operator and closure of the property. After consideration of these various alternatives over a 2.5-year period, BHPB announced final closure of the mine site on January 15, 2002.This paper describes how the BHPB charter and HSEC policy apply during the closure process.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has developed a computer image processing algorithm to determine the size distribution of moving taconite (iron ore) pellets. This algorithm interprets line-scan images to measure pellet diameters. Pellet edge detection with a peak light intensity constraint is the basis of this technique. Preliminary error analysis indicates a normally distributed experimental error with a standard deviation of 0.09 and 0.15 for pellet diameters of 0.4 and 0.9 cm, respectively. System accuracy was independent of moving pellet speed below 50 cm/sec. Computer image-based size distributions were found to be in close agreement with standard sieve analysis.

In Cleveland County, North Carolina, one and one-half miles south of Kings Mountain, Foote Mineral Company operates an open pit for the production of spodumene, feldspar, mica, and commercial stone. Spodumene concentrate is sent to Footers Sunbright, Virginia plant and to other customers. Exton, Pennsylvania and New Johnsonville, Tennessee plants produce lithium compounds sold to the oil industry for multipurpose lithium-base greases, to the metal industry as welding flux, to the air conditioning market, and to the glass industry. Ceramic grade spodumene, feldspar, and mica concentrates go to other processing companies from the Kings Mountain plant. Waste amphibolite is delivered to a neighboring quarry operation.
