It is axiomatic that in designing a bulk material handling system the primary consideration is the functioning of the machines. The structure is secondary -its reasons for being are to support, enclose and provide access to the machine, for servicing. This results in a wide variety of supporting structures. Other considerations are: plant layout, local soil conditions, climate, local laws and codes, and last, but by no means least, the Customer's wishes.

In October 2006, a 7m Double Shield TBM, boring through very poor volcanic formations, was pushed back by fluid mud, which presence had not been detected during previous field investigations, due to the high covers characterizing the majority of the tunnel axis. The present work describes the investigations made to gain better knowledge of the conditions in front and all around the TBM, the special measures implemented, the exploratory and bypass tunnels excavated, the extraordinary occurrences came true during the execution of these tunnels, the drainage campaigns, the design of the chamber excavated to free the TBM, the dismounting and restarting of the TBM.

In April 1975 Kaiser Steel Corporation and the United States' Department of Energy entered into a cost-sharing agreement for the demonstration of shield-type longwall supports on three consecutive longwall panels at Kaiser's York Canyon' Mine in New Mexico. Under this agreement the Department of Energy supplied 117 Hemscheidt 320 HSL caliper-type shield supports and hydraulic pumps for the duration of the demonstration. The purpose of the demonstration was to educate the U.S. coal mining industry as to the benefits in production, productivity, health and safety, and increased coal extraction afforded by shield-type longwall mining systems and to provide the industry with a working model. A detailed description of this demonstration is given in U.S. Department of Energy Publication No. DOE/ET/12530-T1, entitled "Demonstration of Shield-Type Longwall Supports at York Canyon Mine of Kaiser Steel Corporation," hereafter referred to as the York Canyon Report.

Utah has produced about one billion troy oz. (31.7M tonnes) of silver, more than any U.S. state except Idaho. Several very high grade ore systems, now closed, occur within large polymetallic limestone-hosted districts related to plutonic complexes. These Utah mines fed several major lead smelters for nearly a century. Interaction of magmatic chloride-rich fluids with carbonate rocks localized significant bonanzas within these districts. A low sulfidation state was produced in the fluids by their passage through limestones. The Bingham porphyry mine has also yielded more byproduct silver than other porphyry copper-gold systems. Away from exposed intrusive rocks, some large silver-only systems occur in Mesozoic sandstone and in caldera-related veins in volcano sedimentary rocks. Thick permeable latest-Proterozoic basement meta quartzite sequences present beneath western Utah may have been important, as perhaps they were in the Coeur d’Alene district of Idaho, in providing chloride and silver-rich ore fluids. However, it is clear that specific Tertiary magmatic events played an essential role in the evolution of the Utah silver-rich metallogenic province. The largest silver districts in the state are genetically related to porphyritic plutonic rocks.

The Granduc ore body is located beneath glacial terrain on the borders of British Columbia and Alaska, some 600 miles from Vancouver and 30 miles from Tidewater at Stewart, B. C. The concentrator and attendant facilities are located in wilderness country at an elevation of 2500 feet. The average annual snowfall is 65 feet. Surface facilities and ore body are linked by a 10 mile railroad haulage tunnel. This copper property has been developed by Granduc Operating Company on behalf of Newmont Mining Corporation and American Smelting and Refining Co. First production started in November, 1970. In August, 1966, Granduc Operating Company awarded an engineering and construction management contract to McKee-Swan Wooster, a joint venture of A. G. McKee of Canada and Swan Wooster Engineering Company Limited, to design a concentrator to treat approximately 7000 tons of ore per day. The isolated location of the Granduc ore body indicated comparatively high freight rates on consumable items of concentrator supplies such as reagents, grinding media, etc. A firm flowsheet for the flotation of the Granduc ores having been developed by the Danbury laboratory of Newmont Exploration Limited, attention was devoted to means of reducing operating costs. One obvious method was to reduce or eliminate the costs of steel grinding media by employing some form of autogenous grinding. two pilot plant operations were carried out at the facilities of Lakefield Research of Canada Limited, in which autogenous grinding of Granduc ores was investigated. The MBS Solvent Extraction System utilises a unique design of mixer- settler having very high capacity per unit area and great flexibility. The development of the mixer-settler is traced through its various stages wherein the independence of mixing and pumping, reduction in settler area requirements and simplicity of plant layout were achieved. The laboratory, pilot plant and full scale tests contributing to the development of the machine are described. The existing KREBS SX plants in Europe and Africa are described as well as the plants presently under design. Results of recent testwork are also given.

In September 1992, mining in Mexico was opened again to foreign investment by President Salinas-de Gortari, after thirty years of "Mexicanization" of mining industry which limited foreign participation up to a 49 % (or 34 % in case of national reserves) on a Mexican mining corporation. During said period mining in Mexico was controlled by four or five big mining companies and besides mining production was focused mainly on silver, lead, zinc, copper and fluorspar. Suddenly in middle of a big crisis on Mexican mining industry due to low prices of minerals in the world and also in a period on which it seems that mining industry in the United States and Canada has been condemned to die for environmental reasons, it appears a new Mexican Mining Law to permit foreigners to participate in mining in Mexico' trough Mexican mining corporations that they may control up to 100 %

This paper presents some of the results of a rock mechanics in¬strumentation program designed for, and implemented at, longwall panel 4N at the York Canyon Mine near Raton, New Mexico. The objective of this particular instrumentation program was to determine the response of the rock mass to longwall mining of a thick coal seam utilizing shield-type supports. Measurements were made in the rock along the ground surface, above the coal seam, in the coal seam and immediately below the coal seam. Longwall test panel 411 had a total developed length of 762 m (2500 ft) and a face width of 168 m (550 ft). The seam mining height in the panel area was approximately 3 m (10 ft). The average depth of overburden above the panel is 107 m (350 ft) al¬though it ranges from 73-134 m (240 - 440 ft). Roof support at the face was provided by Hemscheidt shields. These shield-type supports weigh 11.4 metric tons each.

We are proud that one of our predecessor companies originated the phrase "Safety First". That phrase remains today as the guiding principle that governs our total approach to safety and well being in U. S. Steel. U. S. Steel management is totally committed to this attitude and our objective is to have every employee as deeply conscious of his safety responsibilities. Safety is a state of mind but like most things it must have a physical side - both intertwined and inseparable. You might say each promotes the other; and this gives us confidence that with hard work, cooperation from all individuals, and proper application of knowledge and experience, our ultimate objective of frequency "0" will be attained. It is in this vein of thought we present a paper today which gives you briefly our progress, mainly in the physical, or mechanical, protection of miners at work in the Southern District mining operations of U. S. Steel. The Southern District not only includes the underground mining of coal but the underground mining of zinc ore in Jefferson City, Tennessee, and the quarrying of dolomitic limestone near Bessemer, Alabama.

In recent years the widespread problems of air and water pollution generated by both population and industrial expansion have become a major public concern. Therefore, many municipalities are striving to achieve more efficient wastewater treatment processes so these wastewater's can be reintroduced into the waterways of our nation with little or no detrimental effects on the future beneficial use of that water. With this, improved treatment comes an ever increasing volume of wastewater sludge which must be disposed of in a manner of minimal impact on the environment. Furthermore, with demand for energy continually accelerating in this nation, our concern over high oil prices and our increasing dependency on foreign oil sources, there has been an ever growing interest in the largest energy source that are nation has, coal. However, surface mining of coal can cause many environmental problems when adequate precautions are not faithfully adhered to. These problems include water pollution from silt and/or clay erosion and acid runoff, produced by oxidation and hydrolysis of pyrite; i.e., FeS2 + 3/02 + H20 + FeSO4 + H2SO4. One method of wastewater sludge disposal which can utilize large volumes of sludge for a beneficial project that may not compound our environmental problems is spray irrigation, to either depleted farmland or to abandoned strip-mined soils. Sludge is characteristically high in organics, as well as having near neutral to alkaline pH properties. With these two qualities it possesses a potential for neutralizing acid strip mine spoils, which would enhance the establishment of a vegetative ground cover. Perlite is an altered rhyolitic glass with 2 to 5 wt % water that expands or "pops" when heated quickly to plasticity while evolving steam to form lightweight, glass foam. Commercial perlite deposits in New Mexico are well-developed zones of chemical weathering (hydration) superimposed on highly permeable and thick glassy zones at the chilled upper surface and toes of high-silica-rhyolite lava flows and lava domes. The maximum tonnage of glass in these volcanoes was predetermined by their unique eruptive histories. New Mexico perlite production (80% of US production of 571,00 st) is mostly from the 3.9 Ma high-silica-rhyolite lava flows at the No Agua Peaks volcanic center. The primary vent at No Agua is defined by a 900 ft-high rubidium-rich composite lava dome, known as West Peak, that contains minor perlite reserves. Slightly less rubidium-rich lava squeezed out from under the west flank of the dome to form relatively thin (250 ft) but highly vesicular lobate flows that now consist of about 50 % recoverable perlite. Finally, rubidium-poor lavas were extruded from a radial dike on the northeast flank of the dome. These thicker (400 ft) flow lobes contain about 20 % recoverable perlite. The largest mass of lava does not always contain the most perlite. The thinner (west) flow at No Agua yields the largest perlite reserves rather than the large composite lava dome or thicker (east) flow.

On April 3, 1981, Harrison Western Corporation was awarded a contract by Amax Alloy - A Division of Amax Inc., to sink the Henderson #5 ventilation shaft. The project was located on the Henderson Mine site 88 kilometers west of Denver near the town of Empire, Colorado (Figure I). The Henderson No. 5 Shaft, located in an Alpine environment at an elevation of 3145 meters, was a 9.8 meter diameter concrete lined shaft with a total depth of 793 meters. Work started and continued with Harrison Western employees until January 15, 1982. At that time, Amax made the decision to continue the shaft-sinking with their own labor, and with Harrison Western providing supervision under a management service contract. Shaft sinking continued under this arrangement to October 1, 1982, at which time Amax put the Henderson No. 5 project on standby status until further notice.

The shipment of coal, ores, and minerals in bulk form during the winter months presents a difficult problem in emptying rail cars. U. S. Steel Research in cooperation with U. S. Steel Coal Operations bas laboratory tested and field monitored the effectiveness of using freeze conditioning agents (FCA) to minimize the frozen coal problem. This report examines, in an overview manner, our experience after four seasons of treatment using different FCA agents on raw and preparation plant products. Our observations indicate that if an FCA is applied correctly it is effective mineral to mineral. Freezing problems still occur at the interface between the coal and the metal of the car sides and bottoms. Leading chemical suppliers have made positive improvements in their FCA formulations with second and third generation products. Further advances are needed to make chemical treatment for the prevention of frozen coal a real full-proof method.

"The term “aggregate” has a number of definitions depending primarily on the use of the material. Aggregate in some context is sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag or other material of mineral composition used in bituminous and portland cement concrete, mortar, plaster, railroad ballast, filter beds and a variety of other uses where aggregates can be utilized.Of the natural aggregates, crushed stone is widely used for most construction purposes. Crushed stone can be mined from a variety of rock types such as limestone, dolomite (dolostone), granites, and granitic type rocks, basalt, gabbro (trap rock), sandstones, schist, marble, gneiss, quartzite, rhyolite, as well as other rock types. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) breaks down the rocks by type sold as follows: limestone, dolomite, marble, calcareous marl, shell, granite, trap rock (basalt, diorite) sandstone/quartzite, slate, volcanic cinder and scoria and miscellaneous stone.In 2015, the USGS estimates that 1.32 Gt (1.45 billion st) of crushed stone were produced in the United States. The volume of crushed stone produced, and the numerous mines that produce it make the crushed stone industry the largest mining industry in the United States. The five leading states for production of crushed stone in 2015 were Texas, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Florida and Ohio. The size of the first two states certainly helps in output because of the large market area. The remaining states benefit from being able to barge along rivers to outside markets in adjoining states. Georgia producers rail large amounts of granitic aggregate to Florida and adjacent states devoid of crushed stone aggregate, especially skid resistant aggregate (aggregate used on the top course of asphalt roads)."

Nickel laterites throughout the world are similar in their gross aspects, but vary significantly in detail. The deposits occur in two separate and distinct geologic settings --those formed over ultramafic rocks which were mechanically emplaced, and those formed over ultramafic rocks that were intruded as melts. The source of the primary nickel in the parent rock may occur both as ionic replacement in silicate lattices and as nickel sulfides. Factors controlling the degree of laterization and nickel enrichment are dependent upon the parent rock characteristics as well as chemical and climatic conditions. Two chemically and physically distinct zones (oxide and saprolite) are commonly present in the laterized rock, but one or the other may be extremely thin or absent. Cobalt and copper may be present in recoverable amounts. Geologic, geophysical and geochemical methods are all utilized in exploring for these deposits. These methods are compared, evaluated and illustrated in the paper. Drilling patterns and ore reserve calculations are also discussed. In contrast to many ore deposits, processing costs are much higher than mining costs. The most efficient processing method is directly dependent upon the chemical composition of the ore. This variation in the chemical and physical characteristics of nickel laterites requires a detailed test program of the metallurgical response to representative samples and blends of ore. Detailed laboratory and bench-scale metallurgical tests are necessary prior to a full scale pilot plant test.

Let's start with a bit of History. Before the advent of woven wire screen cloth or perforated plate as we know it today, screens or sieves, as they were called, were probably made by the Greeks or Romans around the year 150 B.C. Coarse openings were made from bamboo or other woven reeds or with holes punched in leather hides, while fine openings may have been made using hair from the long tails of horses woven with small openings. The first metallic woven wire screens were probably produced by the Germans in the 15th Century. All of these screening devices were, of course, hand operated. The first records of mechanically driven shaking screens are found in "John Smeathon's Diary of His Journey to the Low-Country" in 1775. He was the English Civil Engineer who built the famous Eddystone Light House and discovered the formula for making hydraulic cements. He described a screen the Dutch were using as a wooden frame on which woven wire was mounted. This box was inclined at an angle and hinged on the lower end. The upper or feed end was equipped with a pulley so they could raise it up, say 5" or 6", and then let it drop abruptly onto a sill or stop plate, thus jarring the material deposited on the woven wire through the openings. Material that was passed over the deck was scooped up and redeposited on the woven wire for rescreening. This was an early form of what is today known as a recirculating load.

In the early 1960's the Company, then named the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company, was drilling the Continental ore body located near Fierro, New Mexico. Reserves of underground ore of sufficient quantity were indicated to build a mill. At the same time some ore from the Continental No. 1 mine was being milled at the Company's Bullfrog Mill, formerly a lead-zinc mill. The copper ore in comparison to the lead-zinc ores was very hard, abrasive, and heavy. These factors pointed out the possibility and attractiveness of autogenous grinding. While prior to this some study had been given to autogenous grinding, no large scale tests had been made. Such a program was carried out and from the pilot plant data the following was established: 1. Grinding of the ore by autogenous means could be accomplished. 2. This could be done in one stage; however, not at a satisfactory tonnage throughput rate. Thus, the use of a secondary unit has been employed. 3. Grinding in the secondary unit could be done by pebbles generated in the primary unit. This resulted in the scheme whereby the ore would be ground 100% autogenously. 4. Liberation of the copper minerals was excellent so that good recovery at a satisfactory concentrate grade would be obtainable.

Deep Well turbine pumps receive constantly increasing application to the problem of mining water and other fluids from great depths. Many installations of medium settings are presently operating successfully and it is felt that mach greater depths are immediately within reach. Settings and lifts in excess of 2000 feet: are not at all out of reason with present knowledge experience, and materiels; however, conditions of individual applications will govern in each case and dictate methods and possibilities to the designer. Design and operating problems of deep set -turbine pumps ire discussed together with a description of various types of equipment falling within this category. Although the deep well turbine pump has been produced In the vertical turbine pump industry for many years, the connotation of the word "deep" still remains questionable. Among the manufacturers of this type of machinery, answers to the question implying the practical limitation of setting for a deep well pump will vary to an extreme. Most pump designers are in accord that this type of equipment has not yet been exploited to its fullest degree; however, the subject is admittedly fraught with unsolved problems and un¬tried solutions so that such a discussion must necessarily derive from personal opinion and, belief., even though based on substantial experience and background. For this reason, it will be stipulated that the present writing will deal with what may be termed euphemistically ?a highly controversial subject.? During the nineteenth century, a paper was published under proper authority proving beyond question that the human body could not withstand speeds exceeding 20 miles per hour. As a limitation, this looks ' pretty ridiculous to us today. At the beginning of the twentieth century, there was not a single machine in operation that could be described as mullti-stage deep well centrifugal pump. As a matter of fact, very few centrifugal pumps of any type wire operating against heads in excess of 50 feet, since such applications were considered impractical. In the

The Yanacocha project is the first foreign investment in Peruvian mining since Cuajone during 1976. Three years after the project began, it has become the largest producer of gold from heap-leach operations in the world and the top producer in Latin America. The success of Minera Yanacocha SA (MYSA) opens a new chapter in Peruvian mining with the exploitation of its widely spread gold deposits. And it has attracted the interest of foreign investors in Peru’s mineral resources. Construction began on Aug. 1, 1992. The first gold bar was poured on Aug. 7, 1993 from ore from the Carachugo Mine. During 1993, Minera Yanacocha produced 2.5 t (81,000 oz) of gold and 9.4 t (304,000 oz) during1994 (40% above budget). Production was expected to exceed 15.5 t (500,000oz) during 1995 with the start-up the Maqui Maqui Mine.

A multiyear program involving online, in-vessel exposures at Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. (BGMI) has provided information and experience about the materials and designs for brickwork linings in pressure oxidation autoclaves. A variety of brick and mortar products was evaluated. Properties before and after exposure were used to document the performance. Some benefits include the development of a new silicate mortar, a better understanding of brick requirements and increased autoclave operating time between maintenance shutdowns. BGMI operates six pressure oxidation autoclaves at its Eureka County, NV gold operation. These autoclave process 15.8 k/ld (17,500 stpd) of gold ore. Figure 1 is a flowsheet of the six autoclave circuits. The gold ore is refractory, in which the gold particles are mineralogically encapsulated on a micro- and submicroscopic level. The autoclaves are 4.4- m- (14-ft-) diam and 26 m (85 ft) long (tip-to-tip). Inside of each is a full brickwork (brick plus mortar) lining that divides the vessel into five compartments. Each compartment has a motor-driven agitator that keeps the slurry suspended and disperses the oxygen to enhance reaction. During autoclave operation, the conditions are steady state at 210° to 232° C (410° to 450° F) and 61 to 62 kPa (420-430 psi). As shown in Fig. 1, there are other accessory vessels (splash and flash towers) in the autoclave circuits that are also brickwork-lined. The linings used to date, other than small test sections, have all been acid-resistant fireclay bricks, bonded with alkali silicate mortar, PbO- based mortar and/or vinyl ester mortar, but mainly alkali silicate mortar.
