The Epping to Chatswood Rail Line project is the largest publicly funded infrastructure project in New South Wales. Construction commenced in November2002 with opening scheduled for 2008. The work includes 13 route km of twin TBM driven 7.2 m diameter lined running tunnel, three cross-overs and three new underground stations. The new stations have platform caverns of 20m span with similarly proportioned concourse caverns alongside. The ground is bedded sand stone and shale with high horizontal stresses. Predicted stress-relief induced ground movements during staged excavation led to innovative use of rock anchors for permanent support.

The Construction Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers recently published the second edition of a 1997 publication on geotechnical baseline reports. The new publication, called Geotechnical Baseline Reports for Construction, Suggested Guidelines, represents a 2-year effort that adds three new chapters to the original publication, as well as capturing practitioner commentary through two industry workshop sessions. The paper will overview the contents of the new publication, particularly the three new chapters.

The development of information concerning mesothelioma in South Africa started with the 1959 finding of Dr. J. Christopher Wagner of cases of mesothelioma in persons living in the vicinity or working in crocidolite mines in Cape Province. After more than 40 years, the data from South Africa now provide important insights into the differences in mesothelioma risk associated with different asbestos fiber-types. Three case series reports and one analytical report were reviewed in this session. In total, information on 504 proven cases was presented. There were 28% of cases arising from occupational exposure in mining, 35% from non-mining occupations, 23% from environmental exposures; 14% where no exposure was established and 9% where the exposure was unknown. Among the 129 cases for which occupational exposure and asbestos fiber-type were established, 115 cases were associated with occupational exposure to Cape crocidolite; 1 case associated with occupational exposure to Transvaal crocidolite and 9 cases with occupational exposure to amosite (grunerite asbestos) and 4 cases with occupational exposure to mixed fiber-types. There were no cases associated with chrysotile asbestos. There were 33 cases of environmental mesothelioma linked to Cape crocidolite exposure and 2 to exposure to amosite and crocidolite but none to Transvaal amosite alone or to chrysotile. The evidence shows that amosite is capable of causing mesothelioma but that the major risk in South Africa is associated with Cape crocidolite.

Sixteen companies mined fuller’s earth in 11 states during 2004. Production during 2004, based on a preliminary survey of fuller’s earth producers, was 3.96 Mt (4.3million st) valued at $340 million. This compared with3.6 Mt (3.9 million st) during 2003, valued at $346 million. The 3.96 Mt (4.3 million st) probably includes some crude clay tonnage. And production of finished product probably was closer to 3.2 Mt (3.5 million st) in 2004. Georgia was the leading producer state of attapulgite-type fuller’s earth, followed by Florida. Georgia also was the leading producer state for montmorillonite-type fuller’s earth. It was followed, in descending order, by Mississippi, Missouri, Florida, Virginia, Illinois, California, Tennessee, Kansas and Texas.

A new generated NaNO3 ? NaNO2 ? KNO3 ternary thermal energy storage system which has low melting point as 124°C and high specific heat capacity was studied for the short and long?term thermal stability by using the Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA). Based on the actual working condition of molten salt in solar two, the simulated cyclic thermal stability measurement was also conducted. The ternary system demonstrates excellent short ? term thermal stability and thermal reliability after cyclic heating and cooling processes. However, in the long ? term as well as the simulated cyclic stability measurement, large amount of weight loss was observed. Moreover, the stepwise long ? term isothermal study reveals that below 440°C the weight change is minimal and this temperature is viewed as the upper limit temperature of thermal stability for this ternary system. To determine the lost phases at high temperature above the upper thermal stability limit, techniques such as XRD and SEM are used to compare the condition of the salt mixture before and after the long ? term thermal stability study. On the basis of the comparison, it can be concluded that the major weight loss was due to the decomposition of sodium nitrite.

Discrete (digital) signal processing techniques are proving to be very valuable tools for miners using the block cave method. Waveform analysis of different measured signals associated with active mining provides valuable information on production dynamics and safe operation of the mine. For example, correlation of the 3D surface displacement velocity waveform and the production output waveform reveals a remarkably predictable time-varying physical process. Studying the geometrical and temporal relationship between these two signals opens a broad window through which new management techniques become apparent. In this paper we discuss the signal processing techniques used to study these relationships, as well as the related implications for mining. This research was carried out in association with the Chevron Mining underground molybdenum mine in Questa, New Mexico. Some of these new techniques will be integrated into the decision management process at the mine and will provide insight on ore production, draw control, and safe reclamation. The science of signal processing involves the analysis and interpretation of physical processes that vary with time. Two general categories of signals1 are recognized. A continuous signal is a waveform of varying amplitude that is continuous in time (such as a sine wave). A discrete signal is a sequence of quantized values. The independent time variable and amplitude are sampled periodically such that we only know the value and shape of the waveform at the sampling frequency. Displacements measured by a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver are an example of this. Discrete signals may be studied in the time, frequency, autocorrelation, or wavelet domains. In this paper the amount of ore extracted from the mine and the measured surface displacements are analyzed in the time domain.

The block cutting machine is one of the most important noise sources in the stone processing factories. In this study, the assessability of the noise from the block cutting machines in the stone processing factories using the P-wave velocity was investigated. The noise levels of some block cutting machines were firstly measured during the cutting of the three different rocks. Then, core samples of the same rocks were cut by an automatic cutting machine in the laboratory and noise levels were measured. A conversion factor was obtained by dividing the site noise levels by the laboratory noise levels. Then, thirty seven different rocks were cut by an automatic cutting machine in the laboratory and noise levels were measured. The P-wave velocity of rock samples were also measured in the laboratory. A strong relation between the laboratory noise levels and the P-wave velocity was found. The noise level from the block cutting machines can be assessed using the derived relation and the conversion factor.

The OptiPit® software program is developed based on expertise gained at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) using Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) techniques. This program has been developed to satisfy the need in the mining industry for a multi-time period schedule and cutoff grade optimization tool that handles large scale open pit and underground mining operations involving many dumps, stockpiles, complex processing options and blending requirements. The current software (or earlier development versions) has been beta tested and used on various large scale projects within Placer Dome Inc., Newmont Mining Corporation, and Phelps Dodge Corporation since 2003. Through the use of this software, these companies experienced additional value creation by optimizing mine sequences, cutoff grades, material process flows and stockpiles under complex operational and processing constraints. This paper will present simple case study results to demonstrate the power of OptiPit® when used as a cutoff grade optimization tool. Furthermore, the paper will show, by example, how significant the difference in the Net Present Value (NPV) of a given project can be, depending on whether results are obtained by way of cutoff grade optimization using OptiPit®, or by using traditional breakeven cutoff grade approach.

Blasting in geothermally high temperature ground and/or extremely reactive ground is an increasing common challenge for surface and underground mines. Many current PETN based non-electric and electronic detonators have manufacturer published in-hole temperature limits ranging from 55°C to 65°C (131°F to 150°F). When confronting blasthole temperatures above the manufacturer published limits, operations may request site-specific guidance and qualification for use. The advised safe loading window for in-hole PETN based detonators is often too short to be practicable for production blasting. To overcome limitations of PETN based initiation systems, surface mines with high temperature ground and/or reactive ground are known to load blastholes with a qualified high temperature bulk emulsion that are top primed with a cartridge of temperature qualified detonator sensitive emulsion plus an RDX detonating cord downline. As there is no in-hole delay detonator in this system, blasthole timing is accomplished with surface delays. Although this system is safe, top priming and surface delaying does influence floor quality and top size fragmentation, and safe loading windows times reduce blast block size and increase blasting frequency. A mining company with a site characterized by geothermally high temperature ground plus highly reactive ground employed a blasting system like the one described above. The site desires to improve blasting performance by moving to an in-hole delay initiation system that can withstand the site ground conditions. At the request of the mining house, DynaEnergetics developed an electronic initiation system for application in geothermally high temperature ground and/or extremely reactive ground conditions. The DynaEnergetics IGNEO high temperature electronic initiation system is rated for in-hole use in ground up to 150°C (302°F) for 48 hours. The detonator consists of a high strength detonator with an HMX base charge and thermally resistant downline. To make up a primer, the detonator is inserted into a booster charge assembly that is fitted with a small HMX shape charge. This high energy primer is designed to be compatible and reliable for firing bulk emulsions, including those with high percentages of urea inhibition to combat reactive ground. Up to 1000 detonators may be programmed in 1 ms increments up to 1500 ms. The system is controlled by a digital firing panel that can be used with either a wired or wireless trigger. The system enables high temperature and/or reactive ground sites to utilize in-hole delay initiation and realize the associated performance benefits.

Construction of a new transportation link frequently requires crossing under an existing highway or railroad. Although traffic diversions may permit a cut and cover structure to be built, ‘zero impact’ tunnel solutions are becoming increasingly popular. The vertical clearance between the new tunnel structure and the existing highway or tracks may be very low; sometimes less than two meters. This leaves little room for error since any ground loss can rapidly translate into surface settlement. Problems can be avoided by maintaining the stability of the tunnel face and by minimizing ground movement around the tunnel lining. This paper examines construction methods that have been used to construct short tunnels with shallow cover, and highlights factors to be considered for future projects.

In order to safely store radioactive waste long-term, HAW repositories in saliferous formations have to be backfilled. The main purpose of those backfill operations is the restoration of the geological barrier function of the containment area. For best possible results the used material should be of a comparable composition or characteristic for the host rock formation. Additionally, the material should show a high density after completion of the backfilling process as well as a low permeability. A major aspect to consider in these processes is the minimization of the gap of the backfill body to the roof of the drift. To fulfil those requirements, a micro-structure stabilized crushed salt backfill material has been developed as part of the GESAV-I-project. Due to the material composition of this so-called GESAV-material, salt mineralcrystallization processes start after emplacing it, a process that leads to the polyhalite formation. With the crystallization of polyhalit, the halite grains are bridged, which in return stabilizes the matrix of the backfill. The GESAV-II-project continued successfully what GESAV-I started and determined an ideal backfill method in order to build the backfill bodies composed of GESAV-material. Due to the compaction of the material during emplacement by vibration, high in-situ densities, low permeabilities and a backfill factor close to 1 was able to be reached. In the following SAVER project this journey of practical test underground will be continued.

The Regional Connector Transit Project is a 1.9-mile-long underground light rail system that will connect LA Metro’s A (Blue), E (Expo), and L (Gold) Lines in downtown Los Angeles. This $1.75-billion design-build project is scheduled for revenue service in Spring 2023. The project consists of 21-foot diameter twin-bored tunnels, a 300-footlong crossover SEM cavern, three new underground stations (at 1st Street/Central Avenue, 2nd Street/ Broadway Avenue, and 2nd/Hope Streets), and cut-and-cover tunnels along South Flower, Alameda, and 1st Streets. This paper, which is the continuation of our previous paper presented in RETC 2019—LA Metro Regional Connector Transit Project: Successful Halfway-Through Completion, will provide insight regarding the construction of major components, and the system integration and testing work undertaken for this complex transit project.

The progress results of a pilot plant study on the effects of ball top size and other mill operating parameters are reported. Test series on taconite and quartzite crude ores using a 1.7m diameter primary mill in closed circuit with a vibrating screen indicate clear trends on the improvements of mill throughput and power consumption when using larger diameter balls. Possible effects on mill liner and ball consumption as well as future research plans are discussed.

The one-pass tunneling pipe jacking method has often been the most schedule and cost efficient method for the pipe line installation. The main challenges in jacking pipes larger than 108 inches and for longer runs are: transportation and logistics, requiring high jacking forces, keeping line and grades, control of ground surface settlement, providing adequate external lubrication, and the potential of damaging the joints and pipe spigots. In recent years, 144" diameter pipes have been jacked for short runs of up to only 300 feet. In this article design and construction of installation of up to 1,000 linear feet run of 144-inch internal diameter, reinforced concrete pipes without intermediate jacking station in Chicago O?Hare International Airport are discussed. The article also presents discussions regarding the subsurface saturated silt formation, shallow cover, dewatering, jacking and receiving shafts, jacking forces, lubrication and settlement data.

The formation of the gas emission zone in longwall mining and the potential amount of gas in this zone are factors of local geology and spatial variability within this geology. Therefore, geostatistical methods can be used for modeling and prediction of gas amounts and for assessing its uncertainty in the gas emission zone of longwall mines. This study used core data obtained from 64 exploration boreholes drilled from the surface to the bottom of the Pittsburgh coal seam in a mining district in the Northern Appalachian basin. After identifying important coal layers for the gas emission zone, semivariogram modeling was conducted for different coal seams to define the distribution and continuity of various attributes. Sequential simulations were performed for stochastic assessment of these attributes to calculate gas-in-place (GIP) in each coal seam. GIP calculations for coals of various gas emissions zones were combined and ranked for their cumulative distribution function to find GIP in the caved zone and in the fractured zone at the 5%, 50%, and 95% quantiles. Fifty percent quantile results were later used to isolate a panel from the whole area and create a mosaic representation corresponding to the daily advance rate of the longwall face. This approach helped to estimate the daily emissions of this panel from the caved zone and from the fractured zone. Results showed that gas-in-place in the Pittsburgh coal seam, in the caved zone, and in the fractured zone showed spatial correlations that could be modeled and estimated using geostatistical methods. This study showed that gas-in- place volumes in the study area may be as high as 12.3 Bscf and as much as 3.5 MMscf per acre of mining.

The Ohio River Tunnel Project encountered multiple unexpected geotechnical challenges such as crown and invert instability due to the overstress condition affecting the strata above, below, and in the tunnel alignment during and after TBM excavation along with the potential for methane inflow. This paper showcases how the orientation of a tunnel alignment has a significant impact on how in-situ geological stress can impact the excavation of a tunnel from the contractor’s point of view and how geological features influence gas inflow to the alignment over time.

Commodity currency intrigues most of us because of the problems it offers to solve for the Third and the First Worlds. What problems might be solved, if commodity currency were to be adopted in the Third World? That is really the question we are probing here right now. It would take a while to think through all their subtle consequences of this question, but, off the top, it might well have at least three important impacts. Most important of these to this audience is relief from unfair Third World competition. Second, it might well liberate Third World economies from financial indebtedness to the First World and give them freedom from the liquidity limitations. The third benefit is that it might help relieve World trade tensions. All three benefits are interrelated. We could start our speculations on the application of commodity currency from anyone of these starting points. But let us use the starting point most important to you, unfair competition to the U.S. mining industry. From there we might wind up with some thoughts on things you, yourselves, can do to improve things.

On April 21, 1980 the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union (OCAW) submitted a petition urging the revision of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure limit to radon daughters in underground mines. This petition asks for: 1. Annual worker exposure to be lowered from the current 4 WLM/year to 0.7 WLM/year; 2. Full economic protection for workers whose exposure exceeds the proposed 0.7 WLM/ year; and 3. The primary means of lowering workers' radiation exposures shall be environmental controls. I will present the scientific rationale for the lower standard requested in our petition to the Department of Labor. [1. Radiation Exposures to Uranium Miners] Two types of radiation exposures are present in the environment of uranium mines: A. [External Exposure] to gamma sources which until 1978 was considered as negligible compared with internal alpha radiation. R. E. Utting (1), in an investigation of three Canadian uranium mines, found levels of exposures adding to an annual dose equivalent of 3 rems (30 mSv)/year. He concluded that gamma dosages may be a major fraction of the maximum permissible dose for many individual miners. The U.S. experience has shown that there is significant gamma exposure in U.S. uranium mines and, therefore, it could contribute to the total radiation exposure to the lungs in combination with internal alpha radiation. Before ventilation improvements in uranium mines, the contribution of external radiation to total lung dosage was relatively small. After improvements in ventilation, the reduction in internal radiation exposure appears to be in 1980 as low as 1/10 of the 1950 dosages. However, ventilation improvements do not affect external gamma radiation. Gamma radiation remains at the same 1950's level, and it represents today a higher proportion of the total radiation burden to the miner's lungs. MSHA regulations (57.5-47) state that if gamma exposure is below 2.0 milliroentgens per hour, then workers are not required to wear gamma dosimeters and cummulative gamma radiation records need not be kept. Assuming an exposure of 1.9 milliroentgens per hour per 173 hours/month for 12 months,a miner would accumulate a dose from external radiation of 3.9 rems/ year. This dosage would, of course, go unrecorded. MSHA, therefore, should consider a downward revision of the external radiation permissible exposure limit of 2.0 milliroentgens/hour. MSHA should make clear that this exposure level, when added to the internal exposure, does not make for sound health physics -even though the measured current levels do not approach 2.0 milliroentgens/hour. B. [Internal Exposure] to alpha radiation is still the larger contributor to lung irradiation in uranium miners. The target organ is still the lung. The parameters to be considered in determining the biological radiation load appear in Table I for radon daughters present in the upper respiratory tract (URT). "Slope performance monitoring, dependable operational practices and ongoing collection of geologic data in openpit slopes all provide valuable information for quantifying potential steepening of subsequent slopes. Mining at the Goldstrike openpit has been ongoing since the early 1980s, having its share of slope instabilities. In areas where slopes have remained stable, consideration has been made for potential slope steepening of final walls.While technology can be efficient, interesting for collecting needed data, slope design fundamentals based on that data can be applied to create much added value.With the proper available equipment, steepening of bench face angles via presplit blasting is not an uncommon method for steepening of interramp slope angles. As an alternative at Goldstrike, the commonly used Modified Ritchie Criteria for empirical catch bench width has been adjusted, resulting in quantified, rock-specific formulas for bench width and rock fall berm placement. The result is an inter-ramp slope angle increase of 2° on a 305- m (1,000-ft) high slope, without the necessary purchases and procedural changes that would be required for presplit drilling and blasting. The result has shown significant net benefits through reduction in mined waste tons and an increase in gold reserves.LocationThe Goldstrike openpit is located in the Great Basin, on the northern end of the Carlin Trend gold belt in northeastern Nevada (Fig. 1). Due to safety-imposed constraints on clearances for mobile bulk handling equipment, it is necessary to optimally select a unit based on speed and size. The unit cannot be both large and fast. Since output is proportional to both size (or capacity) and speed, the combination must be carefully examined to maximize output. A simple graphical procedure and a calculus-based solution are presented to accomplish this. While the procedure applies to all mobile bulk handlers, as an example of the solution technique, attention is focused on shuttle cars. Background Major variables To fully define a bulk handling problem, the conditions, equipment, and activities must be characterized. The conditions and activities, when lumped together, are termed "encumbered space," since they "act to impede motion, as with a burden" (Lineberry, 1979). The insertion of mobile bulk handling equipment into what is already a difficult set of conditions and activities compounds the state of encumbrance, as limited space is competed for by many normal and life support systems. Long (1972) recognized the effects of design criteria, including road width, on haulage vehicle speed and, therefore, on production. Velocity -clearance curves Velocity-clearance curves are either available or can be constructed in the field. A preliminary set of curves for average conditions and activities is shown in Fig. 1, where clearances are only for the side of the vehicle (Lineberry and Adler, 1984). These curves set the safe speed limits for a vehicle operating at given clearances, under given conditions and activities. When feasible, velocity-clearance curves should be constructed through field measurement and observation. Curve construction should also consider haulway roughness, distances, and operator skill, as well as loading and dumping characteristics. It should be noted that haulage capacity determination is a total systems problem, not one just dependent on velocity and clearances. Production requirements and company capabilities also influence capacity determination.
