Neural network methodology is used to predict mean particle size resulting from rock blast fragmentation. A blast data base developed in a previous study is used in the current study. A part of this blast data was used to train a single-hidden layer back propagation neural network model for each of the similarity groups obtained in the same previous study. Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm provided the most stable and efficient training out of the four algorithms evaluated. An extensive analysis was performed using a part of the blast data to estimate the optimum number of units for the hidden layer for each similarity group. The remaining blast data are used to validate the trained neural network models. Capability of the developed neural network models is determined by comparing predictions with measured values and predictions based on one of the most applied fragmentation prediction models appearing in the blasting literature. Prediction capability of the neural network models was found to be strong and better than the existing most applied model. Diversity of the blasts data used is one of the most important aspects of the developed models. The developed neural network models are suitable for practical use at mines.

The GRATE-KILN System plant at Svappavaara, Sweden, was constructed for LKAB by Allis-Chalmers under a turnkey contract and commissioned in 1969. The plant was designed to produce iron ore pellets from magnetite concentrate at 6100 mtpd using imported fuel oil. It represented the state of the art for plants of its type at the time. Fuel rated capacity was attained within one week of start-up. Product quality, power usage, fuel consumption and machine wear were within warranty limits during sustained production thereafter. As operator skills improved and gas handling system reserve capability was utilized, the plant frequently produced acceptable product at up to 115% of design capacity. During the period 1969 to 1976, market demands increased for high-quality pellets while energy costs rose steadily. At the same time, important advances in the design of GRATE-KILN Systems were being made in other plants constructed by Allis-Chalmers.

The intelligent selection of wire cloth and perforated plate for screening surfaces seems a rather confusing subject to the newcomer in aggregate processing. The proper application of various screening surfaces is a complicated one and one could consider himself an expert only after many years of working with all applications. However, part of the subject matter could be simplified considerably for, the average screen user. In this paper an attempt will be made to do this, by presenting some comparative specification data along with cost figures Unfortunately, it is impossible in the limited scope of this paper to give actual service comparison records between different cloths or cloth and plate. Anyone who has considered making actual service comparisons for competing screening media is well aware of the almost insurmountable problems Their solution would form the basis for a separate paper on that subject alone. Therefore, this paper will be limited to comparative data up to the point of installation.

The paper presents and discusses the results of a detailed study conducted on the subject of energy consumption in the comminution of industrial minerals. The study was based on pilot circuit testing, plant operating data collection, detailed equipment data and literature research. The areas covered by investigations include: high efficiency classification; air classifiers for cement grinding circuits; grinding aids in dry grinding: dry grinding circuit, control based on particle size measurement. Results obtained indicate a large potential for the reduction of energy consumption, in particular in the traditionally high cement clinker grinding circuits. Better classification techniques and correct application of grinding additives can significantly reduce power used per ton of product and also substantially increase grinding circuit output.

As a Rock Mechanics investigator, the author has, Over his career, attempted to use his best knowledge in developing better rock control fixtures. Based on the experience of nine years of development of friction rock stabilizers, in 1980 he decided to launch a new investigation to develop a unique roof support fixture which would fit the coal mining market. The largest single user of roof bolts in the world is the American coal mining industry, historically using up to 100 million fixtures per year. In 1989 they used approximately 82 million fixtures.

Copper and cobalt can be found on nickel laterite ores, and cobalt can be found also on copper ores, and many contaminants such as iron, aluminum, and magnesium are associated with these ores. In hydrometallurgical process, a purification step is necessary after leaching due to the presence of these impurities. Chelating resins are more selective for some metals than others, making them more efficient than cationic resins. This overview discusses chelating resin applications to recover copper, nickel, and cobalt from mining process and mining tailings and the effect of contaminants in leach solution. Chelating resins with iminodiacetate functional group can be used for selective copper recovery, and both iminodiacetate and bis-picolylamine resins are highly selective for nickel and cobalt. Chelating resins with the same functional group can have different performances on the kinetics of loading, because of variations of structure, the density of functional group, and degree of cross-linking. This article reviews commercial chelating resins that can be applied in leach solutions with different compositions, and also possible innovations for uses of chelating resins to recover metals from mining process and mining tailings.

This paper concerns the development and application of a high throughput multi-stream photometric sorting machine developed for the South African gold mines. It is now believed that this sorter and its progeny may be found suitable for a large proportion of all possible sorting applications. A laser light source and sensitive photomultiplier are employed in a scanning system to detect light reflected from the surfaces of rocks passing through the sorting zone. Electronic circuitry then analyzes the photomultiplier signal, which represents the varying intensity of the reflected light, and produces control signals to actuate the appropriate valves of an array of air blast rejection devices to remove from the feed certain particles selected by the analyzing process. Typical throughput per machine ranges from 50 tons/hour for a-2 ½? + 1 ¼? feed to 200 tons/hour for -6" +2 ¾ " material.

The mineral sands industry is oriented primarily toward the supply of titanium (Ti) raw materials (titanium feedstocks) for the production of titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigment and titanium metal. Titanium minerals ilmenite, rutile and leucoxene, and titanium slag and synthetic rutile are all used principally as feedstocks for the production of white TiO2 pigment. It accounts for almost 90 percent of the world?s consumption of titanium minerals. The remainder is used for the production of titanium metal, fluxes for welding rods and as a metallurgical flux in iron and steel making. Titanium dioxide pigment is produced by two alternative process routes, the sulfate process or chloride process. The bulk of the world?s titanium dioxide is derived from the mineral ilmenite, which also contains iron oxide and other minor impurities. At some mining operations, the iron present in ilmenite is removed (ilmenite beneficiation) to produce a high TiO2 feedstock (slag or synthetic rutile) typically containing between 80 percent and 95 percent TiO2. Pigment producers then further process it to produce pigment.

Lithium-Ion batteries (LIBs) have the potential to go into thermal runaway which introduces a new ignition source in hazardous environments such as gassy underground mines that may contain methane in the surrounding air. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) used an accelerating rate calorimeter (ARC) to induce thermal runaway in individual lithium-titanium-oxide (LTO) and lithium-nickel-cobalt-aluminum-oxide (NCA) LIB cells within a sealed enclosure with either no methane, a lean, a stoichiometric, or a rich methane-air mixture in the surrounding canister to determine if these LIB types would ignite the methane, causing an additive effect on overpressures. Canister pressures and maximum temperatures reached by the cells, surrounding air, and exhausted gases were measured in this study and remained consistent with varying methane concentrations.

INTRODUCTION It has been recognized for some time that major changes in mining methods will be required in the near future. Two types of factors contribute to this need for change. Intrinsic factors include ground control problems associated with mining at increasing depths, noise, dust, toxic fumes, and logistics problems which arise from operation in a cyclical fashion. Extrinsic factors include competition for labor from industries offering safer and less difficult work, pressure for less impact on the environment, and changing economic and political conditions. The search for new mining methods has resulted in extensive research being carried out on such novel approaches as thermal fragmentation, high-pressure water jets, sonic drilling, microwave fragmentation, and laser cutting, among others. Joy Manufacturing Co. has elected to concentrate on impact breaking in stopes as a first generation continuous hard rock miner. IMPACT BREAKING Fragmentation techniques show a drop in specific energy as efficiency improves. Specific energy is the energy consumed per unit volume of rock removed and is affected by such variables as rock material properties, fragmentation method used, operator skill, tool design, etc. Mechanical fragmentation methods generally have specific energies much lower than that of the more novel methods. Table 1 shows impact breaking to have an efficiency exceeded only by that of drill and blast methods and it is this high efficiency which led Joy to impactors as the subject for research on potential mechanisms for continuous mining in hard rock.

Sag Mills are becoming bigger in size almost every year. Concentrator plants are also becoming larger with more SAG and Ball Mills units with Gearless Mill drives installed in one plant. In contradiction to this development, concentrator plants are being built in increasingly remote areas, where the power supply and network conditions are not necessarily covering the needs for the operation of such plants. This paper describes sources of harmonic distortions and possible approaches to solve this problem. It also illustrates the permissible tolerances in terms of commutation of power electronics, based on already realized installations. Furthermore it explains how, and with which measures, harmonic currents created by non-linear loads with SAG and Ball Mill drives can be handled, and how harmonic standards can be fulfilled accordingly. Finally, this paper gives an overview about the technical impact of a strong versus weak network, and the economic relationship between them.

This study explores implementing a machine learningbased system to generate a 3D surface repre- sentation of the roof and support straps in the mine. Event cameras have been chosen for their performance in high-dynamic-range lighting conditions and for their low latency. To enable automated drilling and bolting, 3D vision using eventbased cameras has been developed. A ground-truth set is created using two, time-synced event cameras and a LiDAR camera. These sensors are used to construct a ground-truth dataset of corresponding event- camera images and surface maps from the LiDAR. The network is tested with stereopairs of event images and produces a depth image with ±5 mm RMS error on average across 1000 test images.

Change Acceleration Process (“CAP”) One of the tools General Electric developed has been used successfully by companies around the world in a wide variety of industries. This tool, named Change Acceleration Process (“CAP”), is designed to improve acceptance of change. Acceptance is the method by which the creative energies of the workforce can be fully tapped. Over time, every employee receives CAP training at least once, and in many instances three (3) or four (4) times, and will work on one or more High Performance Teams. The ability to treat refractory gold concentrates that contain appreciable amounts of sulfur and arsenic, in an economic and environmentally safe manner is important to the gold mining industry. Processing alternatives include: autoclave oxidation, bacterial oxidation and roasting. Roasting may be the cheapest of all the alternatives if inexpensive methods can be found to contain the arsenic and sulfur. The research program, being reported here, has been evaluating the ability to use hydrated lime in the roaster to capture both the arsenic and the sulfur. Lime roasting is not a new idea, it was proposed for copper ores by Bartlett in the early 1970's (Bartlett and Haung 1973) and for cobaltite concentrates by Taylor in the early 1980's (Taylor et al., 1981). In addition, ores have been roasted that contained limestone and it was shown that partial capture of the sulfur was possible. Lime -sulfur containment has been proposed for the coal fired electricity industry, as well.

In currently used mining methods, blasting techniques often causes dilution of valuable ore and results in costly processing requirements. In the context of narrow vein mining of thin and highly concentrated orebodies there is a need of a mining method that can reduce dilution in order to remain economically viable. This research project explored the viability of a new mining technology, thermal fragmentation, in narrow vein mining. Thermal fragmentation technology uses a flame jet to produce extreme heat that spalls the surrounding rock to a strategically located drill hole, as an alternative to traditional blasting. This paper creates a net present value (NPV) model of a mining method using thermal fragmentation, as well as for an existing method used for narrow vein mining; comparisons and evaluations were made regarding the feasibility of the new technology. It was found that while overall costs for thermal fragmentation were relatively high, reductions in wages, haulage and processing costs, as well as increased productivity and ore recovery, meant that the new method would improve the financial performance of any operation. These results identify that there is an opportunity to introduce the thermal fragmentation technology to narrow vein mines within Australia, in order to lower costs and increase profit.

Introduction Industrial minerals are key ingredients in a large majority of domestic and industrial products that are used in our daily lives. In the 7th edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks, fifty three industrial mineral commodities are described. A precise definition of industrial minerals and rocks is difficult. Bates (1975) proposed a definition which is widely used and is as follows: "any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the non-metallics". They can be igneous, metamorphic, or sedimentary and range in price from a few dollars per ton to a very high price of hundreds of dollars per ton. The growth in their production and use is closely allied with population growth particularly in countries that maintain a high standard of living. The United States just passed 300 million in population and it is predicted that by 2040 the population will be 400 million. This will result in large increases in the need for Industrial minerals. Other factors that relate to increased use of industrial minerals are increased research and development by the producing companies and better quality control. Many industrial minerals such as kaolin, barite, nepheline syenite, fluorspar, lithium carbonate, phosphate rock, potash, talc, and several others are exported from the producing countries to many users around the world which has significantly increased their use. Also, government agencies, State Geological Surveys, and Universities have contributed to their growth by their research and development activities.

Looking back over the last 150 years or so, it is not hard to see that electricity has been a primary force in shaping human development. It has been a basic ingredient in our industrial revolutions that simultaneously improved the productivity, working and living conditions within our farms, factories, hospitals, offices and homes. Today, it has become an essential part of our daily life and our future. Amazingly, we keep finding new ways to use electricity to make our lives more safe, comfortable and productive. It is a great success story of human ingenuity, achievement and development. Demand for electricity The convenience and value of electricity has not gone unnoticed by consumers. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) (Energy Information Administration, 2009), electricity is the fastest growing form of energy in the world and during the next 20 years the world will likely consume twice as much of it as it does today. In 2008, almost 20,000 terawatt hours of electricity globally were consumed (Energy Information Administration, 2009). That is enough electricity to light up more than two million baseball stadiums or power more than 11 billion computers continuously for an entire year. The United States has the dubious distinction of be-ing the largest consumer of electricity in the world with enough power to provide each American with more than 3 kW of electricity ? that is about twice the power currently available to Europeans, eight times the power available to the Chinese and more than 25 times the power available to the citizens of India (American Coal Foundation, 2009).

"The last few decades have seen some remarkable advancement in information technology, but recently various digital technologies have resulted in several synergies to deliver innovation in diverse applications. The mining industry has been relatively slow in adopting these technologies compared to the other industries, but this scenario is changing fast.Challenges. Mining companies globally are going through a series of challenges such as declining ore grades with complex metallurgy, increasing depth of ore bodies, high capital and operating costs, lower productivity, shortage of technical resources, significant pressure from stake-holders to deliver, along with growing environmental and corporate social responsibility issues. Improvement in profitability would need significant improvements in operational performance.Consequently, over the last few years, there has been a major focus among some mining companies to imbibe operational excellence. This has been only possible because of the replacement of a silos-based approach by an integrated view of the organization. Such an integrated view is now possible via the evolving digital technologies. Even so, such a transformation calls for a change in culture, which, for most organizations is not trivial. Attempts in the past to integrate functions, such as through mine-to-mill initiatives in the mining industry, have demonstrated significant benefits to many operations (McKee, 2013). Still, sustaining these benefits has clearly been a challenge due to manpower turnover and lack of proper systems and structures that integrate information between business functions within an operation and between operations and the corporate level.Opportunities. The advent of digital technology has opened up opportunities to integrate interdepartmental information for a unified understanding across an entire organization. The advances in instrumentation, equipment control systems, supervisory control systems (SCADA/ Historian) and industrial networks have helped in the direction of enterprise- wide integration. Efficient separation of naturally hydrophobic gangue, such as talc and carbonaceous materials, from sulphide minerals in flotation is becoming a significant challenge in many processing plants due to the need to process lower grade and more complex ores. Considering the hydrophobic nature of these gangue minerals, prefloating them at the beginning of the flotation circuit in the absence of collectors and rejecting the concentrate is a common practice to remove these gangue minerals. However, sulphide minerals, such as chalcopyrite, can become naturally floatable due to surface oxidation and therefore may float together with naturally hydrophobic gangue. In this study, a new approach was developed to maximize the prefloat of hydrophobic gangue while minimizing the loss of sulphide minerals. The new approach introduced a prefloat cleaner stage where sulphide minerals recovered to the prefloat concentrate was depressed and separated from other hydrophobic gangue minerals at a low pulp potential with the prefloat cleaner tailing fed back to the main sulphide flotation circuit. Flotation tests were conducted using chalcopyrite and organic carbon. The results show that the proposed approach can significantly reduce the loss of valuable minerals in the prefloat flotation without affecting the reject of naturally hydrophobic gangue. Applying pulp potential control at the prefloat cleaner flotation stage also reduces the consumption of reducing agents while minimizing the effect of reducing agents on downstream rougher flotation.
