The recovery of gold from old mine dumps has been carried out over the last two decades. The gold value and price together with recovery methods, determine whether it is economical to process a dump. Pre-concentration with cyclones and spiral concentrators may offer a method to process dumps considered currently uneconomical to treat.

Flotation concentrate originating from the Asarel-Medet porphyry copper mining and processing complex in Bulgaria has been subjected to regrinding using a Ro-Star mill; the effects of which on the downstream metallurgical behaviour are discussed. Particularly the effect on the liberation degree was studied through an optical microscopy and MLA-SEM automated mineralogy. On the other hand, copper selective flotation of the reground bulk concentrate was realised to evaluate the anticipated metallurgical improvement. Process parameters such as involvement of prior hydrocycloning and variation of collector dosage have been evaluated. Within a two-minute residence time inside the Ro-Star mill, an improved liberation degree of the copper bearing minerals has been observed. As a consequence, enhanced copper recovery and selectivity against pyrite was noted. It has been found that in order to guarantee efficient flotation of the resulting ultrafine particles, a modified flotation regime (i.e. changing collector suite and dosages) should be followed. Blaine number has long been used to evaluate the pelletising ability of iron concentrate in the industry. Much information and practical data are available about the effect of Blaine number on pelletising efficiency of different concentrate types. But not many researchers have focused on the effect of Blaine increasing method on pelletising behaviour of coarse concentrates. In this paper the effect of two different grinding methods (i.e. HPGR and Ball Mill) on physicochemical properties of coarse magnetic concentrate green and fired pellets were investigated. Microstructural studies by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) showed that the concentrate for which the Blaine number had been increased through HPGR grinding, has flake-like morphology. In contrast, increasing the Blaine number through ball mill grinding results in more granular particles. Two samples were prepared using HPGR and ball mill. The Blaine number of the HPGR product and ball mill product were 900 cm2.gr-1 and 1200 cm2.gr-1 respectively. The results revealed that pellet properties of this HPGR product are comparable to that of the ball mill product; this is due to the fact that the flake-like morphology leads to enhanced pelletising performance of coarse magnetite concentrates. Iron ore fines are agglomerated to produce sinter, which is an important feed material for blast furnaces worldwide. A model of the iron ore sintering process has been developed with the objective of being representative of the sinter pot test, the standard laboratory process in which the behaviour of specific sinter feed mixtures is evaluated. The model aims to predict sinter quality, including chemical quality and physical strength, as well as key sinter process performance parameters such as production rate and fuel consumption rate. The model uses the finite difference method (FDM) to solve heat and mass distributions within the sinter pot over the height and time dimensions. This model can further be used for establishing empirical relationships between modelled parameters and measured sinter properties. Inputs into the model include the feed material physical properties, chemical compositions, and boundary conditions. Submodels describe relationships between applied pressure differential and gas flow rate through the bed of granulated fine ore particles, combustion of carbonaceous material, calcination of fluxes, evaporation and condensation of water, and melting and solidification. The model was applied to typical sinter test conditions to illustrate the results predicted, and to test sensitivities to parameters such as feed void fraction, feed coke percentage, and the fraction of combustion heat transferred to the gas phase. A model validation and improvement study should follow, ensuring sinter test results are free from experimental errors by conducting repeated tests.

Work undertaken in the field of cut-off grade optimization has not advanced much beyond the work undertaken by Lane in 1988. His definitive work is based on the calculus of the Net Present Value criterion which is the most widely understood, consistent, and appropriate method by which sequential cash flows arising from the extraction of mineral reserves from an exhaustible resource can be represented. Although the mathematics is not complex Lane’s method is not a widely appreciated or applied approach to maximizing the value of a mining operation through selection and balancing of operational cut-off grades. Three stages in a mining operation namely, mining, processing and marketing were defined by Lane and the economics of each stage are identified and isolated to provide an optimum cut-off for each stage. Points of intersection along the present value curves for each stage of a mining operation are used to identify balancing cut-off grades at points where the capacity of the mining, processing and marketing stages is fully utilized and the Net Present Value of the operation is optimized. Data that simulate a small, deep-level Witwatersrand-type gold mine with an average grade of 6 g/t Au and a logrithmic variance of 1.2,are applied to the model to illustrate the benefits of representing cut-off grades in terms of present value curves for different segments of a mining operation. In recent years, the mineral applications dealing with more complex data in distributed environment have grown rapidly. Many mineral and mining organizations have to organize internally and globally distributed manufacturing and experiment sites, which share the roles of databases and other multi-services like software programs. Thus, there are commercial and technical pressures pushing the mineral software vendors to move their current service toward Web service. XML has gained wide acceptance for representing, storing and transferring structured data and documents of many kinds, especially in scientific communities. However, so far there is no such a Markup Language in mineral industry. A XML-based uniform encoding, which is called MineML(Mineral Markup Language), is proposed and developed in this project. The framework of the MineML specification is created. MineML will play the role as shared protocols within mineral domain for archiving, transferring the multi-nature data between the software packages on the desktop over the Internet and sharing the services between users at different sites. Inspired by MLA’s (Mineral Liberation Analyser, JKMRC, University of Queensland, Australia) Mineralogical Data Presentation Program, a proof-of-concept prototype of Web Service is developed here to validate and demonstrate the MineML specification. Certain strategies, specific technologies and tools are adopted to create such an environment. To accomplish that, a set of experimental MineML documents including correlated XML, XSD (schemas) and XSL(stylesheets) documents have been elaborated for archiving, presenting and transferring the mineralogical data information, with the persistence on flexibility and extensibility for generic mineral and mining data handling.

Eramet and Tinfos are two producers of manganese alloys in Norway, which have worked hard for several decades to improve both the internal and external environment. Furnaces producing ferro- and silico- manganese alloys generate large amounts of off-gas that contains substantial amounts of dust, heavy metals and organic by-products. The dust is separated from the gas in venturi scrubbers by washing with water. The water is cleaned and recirculated, and the surplus water coming from moisture in the raw materials, is discharged to the adjacent fjords after further treatment. Emission figures show that the discharge of suspended solids, manganese, zinc and PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) have been reduced substantially over the last three decades as a result of process improvements and installation of state of the art environmental control measures. The two plants were the first world wide to install mercury cleaning of the off-gases from the furnaces. Mercury emission reduction has exceeded 90%. Concerning other environmental issues, such as utilisation of off-gases for energy recovery and chemical purposes, both plants have achieved good results. Major effort in the environmental work has come from the plants themselves, but other players like FFF, The Norwegian Ferroalloy Producers Research Association, and SFT, The Norwegian Pollution Control Authority, have contributed to the achieved results.

The Chemwes uranium plant treats old gold-plant residues from the Sttifontein and Buffelsfontein Gold Mines by acid leaching, belt filtration, countercurrent ion exchange (ClX), and Bufflex solvent extraction (SX). The uranium is recovered by precipitation as ammonium diuranate. Absorption and elution in the CIX section are achieved in four NIMCIX columns operating as two parallel streams. Each loading column is 4,85 m in diameter and contains 12 absorption stages. The elution columns are 3 m in diameter and contain 8 stages. The eluant used is 10 per cent sulphuric acid at ambient temperature. During the commissioning and initial operating periods reported here, the plant yielded an average barren solution of 1,6 p.p.m. of U3O8 from a feed with a mean U3O8 concentration of 132 p.p.m. The U3O8 concentrations in the barren solution were better than 2 p.p.m. some 85 per cent of the time, and better than I p.p.m.73 per cent of the time. Investigations are underway to institute an automatic control system that will result in the U3O8 values on the resin and in the barren solution being maintained at or near the target values in spite of changes in the concentration of uranium in the feed solution.

This paper attempts to model long-term production scheduling problems by chance constrained binary integer programming in a stochastic environment. This stochastic model is set up to account for ore block grade uncertainty. The probability distribution function of grade in each block is used as a stochastic input to the optimization model. This distribution function in each block should be determined using a Geostatistical Simulation approach. The deterministic equivalents of these chance constraints are then achieved, which are in the form of nonlinear in binary variables. A confidence level at which it is desired that the uncertain constraints holds, is specified in each scheduling period. Rather than the previous risk-based model, this formulation will yield schedules with a high chance of achieving planned production targets while maximizes the expectation of net present value and minimizing the variance function simultaneously. Using this method, the grade uncertainty is integrated explicitly into the optimization process.

Platinum metal was first utilized by the Inca civilization in South America where it was found in alluvial deposits along the San Juan and Atrato rivers that lie between the Andean mountain range in Colombia and the Pacific Ocean. The nuggets found in these rivers average between 77% and 86%platinum, 7%?8% iron and small amounts of copper, gold and other Platinum Group Metals (PGMs). The Incas often alloyed platinum with copper to increase its workability and fabricated various ornaments from it. With the arrival of the Spanish in the early 1700s, platinum was labelled a nuisance for the Spanish in their quest for alluvial gold because it concentrated with the gold and had to be removed by either extended amalgamation or by hand sorting. It was at this time that platinum received the root of its current name for the Spanish referred to it as platina del Pinto, platina being the somewhat derogatory diminutive of plata (silver). Pinto was a river in Colombia where the Spanish first distinguished it. The English eventually adopted ?platina? and it is only in recent times that the Latin name platinum has been accepted as the metal?s common English name. From its first introduction to European scientists in 1740, platinum was unappreciated because of its brittle nature and difficulty of working and as a result had little commercial value. Its ability to be dissolved in gold did lead to some counterfeiting of gold bullion and even to the debasement of gold currency.

A pilot plant paste thickening campaign was conducted at the Anglo Platinum Limited Mogalakwena South Concentrator plant in South Africa in order to determine the water saving capability of P&TT technology. In the process a simple water consumption model was developed for estimating the overall water consumption of the mine. The model indicates that for the Mogalakwena tailings, significant water savings are achieved by discharging thickened tailing directly to the TSF but only at densities where free water release at the TSF is close to zero. Iron ore concentrate is not easily transported to, or processed in, ironmaking plants, therefore it is necessary to agglomerate. This paper will determine the possibility of agglomerating Sishen concentrate into suitable ironmaking feedstock. Pelletizing is one of the conventional and preferred agglomeration processes for iron ore concentrate investigated at Kumba Value-In-Use Laboratories. Sishen concentrate was mixed with binder, and then pelletized using a laboratory pelletizing disc; afterwards the green pellets were indurated at high temperatures to give strength high enough to survive handling and lessen disintegration in the shaft during ironmaking. Sishen pellets have satisfactory physical and metallurgical properties which make them suitable feedstock for the direct reduction processes. These were tested under Midrex shaft operational conditions and performed well, with a metallization of 94.47% being attained.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Hons) (Eng) (Mechanical) degree Discrete element methods (DEM) are being used to provide detailed impact histories of the particles in comminution devices, such as mills. To match this immense detail of information, far more informative breakage tests than those that are generally conducted are now required. The split Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus is used in this study, as it allows the calculation of breakage forces and absorbed energies. The geometry of rock particles has been identified as significant, so this project undertook to identify the influence of shape on the breakage pattern of blue stone. Comparisons are then made between the breakage pattern of angular rocks and rounded, milled rocks for single impact fracture and consecutive impact loading at low energy. Results of this experiment indicate that although breakage for both geometries occurs over a similar energy range, rounded particles have the greater probability of fracture because they absorb more of the impact energy for a given loading. Size distributions of progeny show that five pebbles or more are sufficient to predict the distribution of most particles in small energy regimes. Cumulative impact testing shows that considerably more energy is required to break a rock through cumulative damage than through a single impact?this is of considerable importance in the light of the indications from DEM simulations that most breakage in a mill will be from cumulative damage rather than single impact breakage.

The move away from the use of strike stabilising pillars at depth and the adoption of the more flexible system of mining towards final dip remnant pillars brings new opportunities for optimising mine design. In the initial planning stage, the size and spacing of the final pillars is designed using classical design criteria, through limiting modelled values of Energy Release Rate (ERR), Average Pillar Stress (APS) and Excess Shear Stress (ESS). In reality, mines often leave pillars that are larger than those originally designed. One of the reasons for leaving more ground is an unexpectedly high rate of seismicity. In this paper, we present developments in integration of modelling and seismicity that are aimed at developing design criteria that are more responsive to local conditions.

The classical limit equilibrium methods are suspected to be ineffective in predicting the potential for highwall failure in many instances in coal mines around the world. Slope engineers have for many years recognized a block thrust failure mechanism for slope failures, but little work had been done before 2000 to explain the actual mechanisms which must be responsible for the failure. The main reason for this is that limit equilibrium methods implicitly assume rigid blocks, and the resulting force equations must be satisfied everywhere simultaneously for them to have any meaning. This paper will show that the material involved in the slope failure is not rigid; indeed it undergoes considerable permanent deformation during failure. This observation allows the authors to treat the block boundaries independently, because they need not maintain a constant spatial relationship with one another, as is assumed in other methods. To enable analysis of this type the authors assume that the weight of the blocks is evenly distributed. This is reasonable, because the slope material is not strong enough to be self-supporting without some sort of constraint, or strong enough to be able to apply point loads to the surrounding material. The purpose of this paper is to extend the practical application of the analytical method developed from mechanism studies to provide an objective assessment of the risk of slope failure, and therefore guidelines for more stable slope designs. This work is based on studies carried out on two failures in an open pit coal mine in South Africa, and provides a methodology to assess the potential for failure more objectively than is possible with currently accepted methods, while at the same time remaining sufficiently simple to allow a ?back of the cigarette box? assessment by geotechnical engineers on site.

The need to recruit locally produced engineers by the South African Mining Industry led to the Engineering Faculty at the University of the Witwatersrand developing a number of academic bridging initiatives for educationally disadvantaged students. The graduation rate achieved during the initial five years of operation by the most successful of these programmes has been on a par with that of al other students but the performance of subsequent intakes has declined to such an extent that the continuance of this scheme could now be at risk. One reason for this reduction in throughput is that many of the applicants for the increasing number of mining bursaries have been more interested in the bursary than the profession and have either failed or dropped out due to a lack of application and motivation. This will have serious consequences for both Wits and the Industry if it continues and some method of identifying unsuitable or suspect applicants needs to be introduced as a mater of urgency. It is recommended that an introductory course be set up at a working mine that would be run under the auspices of Wits, as a joint venture with industry, and include a level of academic input that would provide both bridging needs and certain first year credits. The final form of this course will require extensive consultation with al parties but needs to be completed before the end of 1996. It is further recommended that the advertising and promotion of mining careers be expanded and much improved.

Ferro-alloys are sold according to the size grading specifications of users. Fines are produced during crushing and the amount produced depends on the crushing process and the physical characteristics of the ferro-alloy. The market value of fines has declined. Market demand is very weak and in some extreme cases is nonexistent. An induction furnace melt process has been developed to solve this problem. The process feasibility has been demonstrated on a small scale with charges of approximately 2.5 kg. The piloting was carried out using a 100 kW furnace with a metal liquid capacity of 140 kg. The operating parameters were determined during the pilot process. The procedures were defined and the equipment required for melting fines produced at the client's site was sized. With the production of ingots, the client can now recover the full value of ferro-alloy fines.

"Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, its reputation for reliability in supplying platinum to global markets is under threat. This is due to the 49% decrease in output per worker (1999–2014), while the domestic costs have risen by more than 10% annually for the past 5 years. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% (2012–2016) has resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. The Chamber of Mines (now the Minerals Councilof South Africa) has suggested that solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures are required. This research aims to provide operational excellence through the application of event chain project management (ECPM) to improve productivity and reduce operational costs. A case study was used to carry out research in platinum mines, with data collected using a motion-time study to measure the current efficiency of operations in each mining stope through actual activity durations. The results indicate that through the application of the event chain project management methodology, risks affecting the mining stope schedule can be managed, the efficiency of operations was improved by reducing the time spent on each activity, productivity was increased by shortening the project duration, and operational costs were reduced in the process. IntroductionSouth Africa’s total mining industry production was 4.9% lower in 2016 than in 2015; it decreased by 1.9% year-on-year in December 2016, with the main contributor to this negative trend being the platinum group metals (PGMs) with a drop of 15.1% and contributing -3.8% percentage points (Statistics South Africa, 2016). Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, the 8% drop in production output since 2008 has put the platinum mining industry under the threat of being seen as an unreliable supplier to global markets. This decline in production is caused by the 49% decrease in output per worker between 1999 and 2014. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% from 2012 to 2016 and an increase in operational costs during the same period resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. A turnaround strategy is required to overcome these challenges. The Chamber of Mines has suggested, among others, the need for solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures. The implementation of these solutions will ensure that the PGM industry thrives and reaches its potential of growing production to more than 322 t by 2020 (Baxter, 2016)."
