This paper presents results of a feasibility study of recycling manganese furnace dust generated in production of ferromanganese and silicomanganese at Tasmanian Electrometallurgical Company, Australia. Dried manganese furnace dust contains about 20 wt% of carbon, in average 33.4 wt% of manganese and 1.3 wt% of zinc. Manganese in the dust is in the form of MnO, Mn3O4 and MnCO3; zinc is mainly in the form of ZnO andZnSO4. Analysis of the zinc balance with dust recycling showed that to keep zinc intake at the acceptable level, it should be partly removed from the dust. In the reduction laboratory experiments, zinc oxide was reduced to zinc vapour by tar of the dust. Reduction of zinc oxide started at 800°C and zinc removal rate increased with increasing temperature; removal of zinc was close to completion at 1100oC. Optimal conditions for removing zinc from the dust include temperature in the range 1000-1150°C, inert gas atmosphere and furnace dust fraction in the furnace dust-manganese ore mixture above 60%. In the sintering of manganese ore with addition of manganese dust in the sintering pot, zinc was reoxidised and deposited in the sinter bed. Removal of zinc in the sintering pot tests was in the range 4-17%. Up to 30% zinc removal was achieved from the bottom layer of the sinter bed. It can be concluded that zinc removal will be low during the processing of manganese furnace dust in the sinter plant. The zinc removal rate will be the highest when pelletised manganese furnace dust is added to the bottom layer of the sintering bed.

ABSTRACT: The modulus of deformation of rock mass is an important engineering parameter required for the design of foundation of hydraulic structure and to study the interaction of rock mass and the structure at the foundation support. Different equipment and techniques are used to arrive at the design modulus value. Since any error in the estimation of modulus values results in multiplication of its effects in the analysis, it is necessary to know about the reliability of testing equipment and procedures. In the present study modulus values obtained by different in-situ equipment at different project sites have been compared. KURZFASSUNG: Der Verformungsmodul von der Felsenmasse ist technisch ein wichtiger Parameter, den man zur Konstuktion des Grunds fuer die Hydro – Tektonik, benoetigt um auch die gegenseitige Beeinflussung der Felsenmasse und der Tektonik am Traggrund zu betrachten. Verschiedene Geraete und Methoden werden angewandt, um den Ausfuehrungsmodul -Wert zu erreichen. Es ist erforderlich, die Zuverlaessigkeit der Pruefeinrichtung sowie des Verfahrens zu kennen, da irgend ein Fehler in der Abschaetzung von Modulwerten in der Analyse zu einer Vervielfachung ihrer Einwirkung fuehrt. In der vorligenden Arbeit werden die Modulwerte gewonnen aus unterschiedlichen Einrichtungen an Ort und Stelle and verschiedenen Projekt -Stellen mit einander verglichen. SOMMAIRE: Le module de deformation d’une roche est un parametre important pour la conception et realisation des ouvrages hydrauliques ainsi que pour etudier l’interaction de la roche et de la structure d’appuis de base. De divers equipments et techniques sont employes pour determiner la valeur de ce module de conception. Puisque l’effet d’une erreur d’evaluation du module devient multiplie dans l’analyse, il est necessaire de savoir la fiabilite des equipments et des methods qu’on ulilise. Dans cette etude, on a compare les valeurs des modules obtenues en employant les equipments in-situ aux sites differents de projets.

Vibration levels on a variety of equipment in a South African opencast mine were measured in this study. The well-established ISO 2631-1 (1997) standard methodology was used for the computation of weighted root mean square (WRMS) and vibration dose value (VDV). This method was used to evaluate the whole-body vibration (WBV) on a wide range of equipment in the opencast mine using the two main parameters, namely the daily exposure A(8) which is based on the WRMS concept and the VDV which measures shocks. The results obtained show that while the majority of the equipment rendered exposure levels that are below the exposure limit value (ELV), exposure levels on about half of the equipment do exceed the exposure action levels. The study also highlights the importance of shock in the observed responses.

In this study, effects of the inert constituents, such as ash, and the effect of blending coals with differing rank and composition on the plasticity of coal blends were investigated. The reference coal originated from the Zonguldak region, in the north-west part of Turkey. Firstly, the effect of coal ash on the plasticity of Zonguldak coal was determined. Secondly, the relationship between the plastic properties of the individual coals and those of the blended coals were identified. Some important relations were found, related to the characteristics of the individual coals. Ultimately, the manner in which the plasticity of Zonguldak coal was affected by blending with low volatile coals was investigated. Keywords: coal blending, coal plasticity, coke, fluidity, rank.

Seismic events and pillar failures observed in two platinum mines in the Rustenburg area, South Africa, were investigated. We studied the sources of approximately 300 largest seismic events recorded in 2009. Moment tensors of these events were estimated from amplitudes and polarities of P- and S-waves. The inverted mechanisms contain isotropic implosive components in many instances. Analyses of uncertainty of the moment tensor solutions confirmed the significance of the implosive component in general. Several documented cases of pillar failure were considered in detail. For each of these a seismic moment tensor was calculated from an elastic stress model assuming an instant removal of a failed pillar. The geometries and magnitudes of the theoretical seismic moment tensors are in agreement with the observed (i.e. inverted from seismic data). The results indicate that either pillar failure or fracturing in the proximity of the reef (within a fraction of the dominant wavelength of seismic waves) are responsible for a significant portion of the large events recorded in these mines.

The purpose of the investigation was to assess various options for increasing the efficiency of the conveyor belt transporting system used at 4 Belt Shaft at Lonmin?s Marikana operations. The reason for the investigation was to prevent the occurrence of a ?bottleneck? at the main ore passes delivering ore to the conveyor belt system, thus creating more fluent operational conditions. The options assessed for increasing the efficiency of the conveyor belt transporting system were: ?Variation of the conveyor speed ?Concurrent tipping from two ore passes on the belt ?Increase the available drive unit power ?Increasing the feed rate from vibratory feeders ?Change in belt width/belt specifications The report shows that the most preferable option to the current situation at 4 Belt, Lonmin, would be the option of concurrent tipping from two ore passes to the belt.

The hard rock gold and platinum mines in South Africa have seen little development in the technology of mining. Holes are still drilled in the rock?though the latest water hydraulic rockdrills will complete that task in two minutes compared with the eight hours for hand drilling. Charging up is with far safer explosives and with available initiation systems it is no longer necessary to run up the face lighting each fuse. Movement of rock in the stope is predominately by means of scraper buckets and scraper winches?these were first introduced in the 1920s. Support is still mainly rock, either in situ pillars or backfill, or alternatively wood. Just as the mining process has changed very little it is hardly surprising that the productivity of mining is also relatively unchanged. Major efforts have been made to mechanize the mining process. However, most of the narrow reef mines where ?trackless mechanized mining? was introduced in the early1980s have reverted to conventional mining. In the wider reefs mechanized mining is the option of choice, unfortunately most of the gold and platinum mines have very narrow reefs that are not suitable to ?off the shelf? equipment. The move to introduce room-and-pillar mining into the narrow UG2 reefs is at the expense of mining more waste with the reef, fortunately it appears that appropriate waste and reef separation processes are available. Room-and-pillar mining followed by long hole drilling and blasting of a narrow slot of reef out of the pillars currently appears to offer the best of both worlds?maximum reef recovery with minimum waste dilution.

This article explores the Fray Farthing Chen (FFC) Cambridge process, a novel method for the electrochemical deoxidation of metal oxides in molten salt, discovered at the University of Cambridge in 1997. The process was hailed as a highly promising, potentially low cost, novel method for the production of titanium metal direct from its oxides. The article should inform researchers in the field of some of the challenges in the commercialization of a novel, high profile process involving multiple stakeholders. The author, former senior process engineer at British Titanium Plc, the company originally tasked with commercializing titanium production via the FFC Cambridge process, reviews the latest literature and discusses past and present progress in the pursuit of low cost titanium metal via this process. Heavy metals and sulphates in acid mine drainage (AMD) can beadsorbed onto bentonite clay, leaving clean water and a heavy metal loaded clay precipitate as products. Due to the toxicity of heavy metals, the clay could not be disposed of safely in the past. A method was thus required to remove the heavy metal content from the clay. Acid leaching was proposed to liberate the heavy metals from the loaded clay. Sulphuric, nitric and hydrochloric acid were considered as lixiviants. Loaded clay samples were leached over a range of pH values from 1 to 3.5 to identify an optimum leaching condition. From the results it was found that metals can berecovered from loaded bentonite clay by means of acid leaching and the optimum pH for heavy metal liberation was found to be 2.5, with uranium as an exception, being optimally leached at a pH of 3. This allows for the possibility of selective leaching. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction analyses indicated that the clay structure did not deteriorate significantly during acid leaching, suggesting that the bentonite could be reused. The treatment of AMD with bentonite clay, and subsequent acid leaching of the clay, is a sustainable solution, and current outcomes could possibly lead to industrial implementation of the process during water purifying and metal recovery from waste streams. [Zr(C9H6NO)4]?(HCON(CH3)2)?(H2O), where (C9H6NO) = 8-hydroxy quinoline (oxH), was synthesized and characterized. This tetrakis-coordinated zirconium complex crystallized in the triclinic crystal system (Pi, Z=2) along with water and N,N?-dimethylformamide(DMF) solvate in the asymmetric unit. The metal atom is surrounded by four N,O-donating bidentate ox-ligands that are arranged around the metal centre to give a square antiprismatic coordination polyhedron with a small distortion towards a dodecahedral geometry. Crystal packing is stabilized by intermolecular interactions of adjacent oxine ring systems in neighbouring molecules, as well as hydrogen bonding of the aqua and DMF solvate molecules, linking the molecular entities into a supramolecular three-dimensional network.

It can be said that no steel can be made without use of one or more of the several Ferro alloys. They form the backbone of steel. Thus, the Ferro alloys industry is vitally linked for its growth and development to that of the steel industry. Ferro alloys industry in India has never been globally competitive, despite its rich ore deposits and low-cost manpower, essentially due to a) Insufficient availability and high cost of electric power b) Increasing ores and reductants cost c) Non-availability of low ash, low phos. coking coal in the country for the production of desired coke with low ash, and low phos. contents, making import of such coke at a high cost imperative d) High-cost and insufficient infrastructural facilities (both road and rail) for rapid transportation of ore from mines to plants e)Stiff competition from producers and exporters of Ferro alloys in other countries like South Africa, Kazakhstan, China, Russia, Australia etc. due to global trade agreement which has made drastic reduction in customs duty on imports necessary. f) Wide fluctuations in the International price of Ferro alloys depending on demand versus supply. To over come these challenges plus adhering to stringent pollution control norms innovations are inevitable in the process technology, and plant equipment design, along with frequent changes in product mix, to be more cost-effective. An attempt is made in this paper to address the innovations that took place in the past and those that further need to be made, considering the future of this industry.

Safe and good operation of Søderberg electrodes is dependent upon high quality electrode paste coupled with correct electrode operating procedures. Good electrode performance depends further on proper melting and densification of the electrode paste. The melted paste should form a dense and viscous layer that prevents gasses from the baking process to move upwards. Both paste cylinders/blocks and briquettes can be used, but the procedures may differ between the various types of paste products. For briquette columns the formation of the important viscous layer is obtained through melting and densification of the briquettes. By basic rheological studies of electrode paste and by laboratory tests of briquette beds at isothermal conditions we have achieved a better understanding of the melting process. The effects of temperature gradients, pressure and friction between the briquettes and the electrode casing have also been evaluated qualitatively in pilot scale experiment and in industrial scale tests. The paper shows that melting and densification starts at a considerable lower temperature than the pitch softening temperature. It is concluded that the formation of a briquette electrode column depends on parameters as temperature, briquette column pressure and the friction. Operating conditions influencing the above parameters should be defined and established for each specific furnace operation. Such factors are e.g., charging and slipping procedures, column heating and electrical conditions.

The name FISH (Fully Integrated Sort House) refers to a class of technology deployed at Jwaneng Mine final diamond recovery. The FISH concept is based on three pillars, namely: ?Improved sorting efficiency FISH is based on laser technology, which is more efficient than hand sorting for certain product categories. Laser sorting is based on measuring in-elastically scattered light from molecules and this is referred to as Raman spectroscopy. The Raman scattered light occurs at wavelengths that are shifted from the incident light by the energies of molecular vibrations ?Availability of production information Roller gap diamond size distribution information is generated on line for upstream process optimization ?Improved product security A ?hands-off? philosophy reduces security risk during operation and maintenance of the plant. In addition, a number of lessons were learnt about the application of new technologies in the industry: ?The required human competency profile demanded by new technology should match the available competencies of the operational staff ?An integrated information management system should be fully functional for both production management and diamond control purposes ?Operational feedback must be correctly evaluated to identify design, maintenance, training and operational issues so as to accelerate the maturity of the new technology within the time span of the sustainable operations project ?Project execution and technology maturity risks have to be evaluated and married to ensure risk mitigation by means of suitable project resource and contracting model selection.

Ash fusion temperature is the temperature at which the mineral matter in coal begins to soften, flow and fuse. It is an important parameter relating to coal utilization. Optimum ash fusion temperatures derived from coal in the Witbank Coalfield region are approximately 1400°C, and higher, although temperatures above1300°C may be deemed acceptable. This study attempted to determine which factors, mineralogical or inorganic-chemical, influence variations in the ash fusion temperatures in certain coals. Coal was sampled from the Number 2 coal seam at opencast and underground workings at New Clydesdale Colliery, Witbank Coalfield, South Africa. The samples represented known low and high ash fusion temperature coal. Analyses performed included proximate analyses, calorific value determination, percentage sulphur, ash fusion temperatures, ash analyses (composition of ash), X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and petrographic studies. Results show that although a complex relationship exists between ash fusion temperature and the various geological and coal parameters, some positive correlative results were obtained. These indicate a possible relationship between low ash fusion temperatures and i) finer size fractions, ii) an increase in iron content present in the form of pyrite and iii) the form in which pyrite is present, namely cleats. High ash fusion temperatures tend to correlate with i) the absence of pyrite or ii) pyrite present as framboids.

The distinction between real estate ownership and that of interests in the property is fundamental to the appraisal of mineral properties. This distinction affects the nature and understanding of security of tenure and, consequently, the perception of what constitutes fair value. Legal matters are a particular concern because of their influence on security of tenure, ownership definition and use restrictions. The dynamics of the market and the complex interrelationships between the factors of production define value at a specific point in time for the bundle of rights, interests and assets that constitute a mineral property. Because each mineral property is unique, physically immobile and of a wasting nature, its usefulness to its owner and society must be optimized. The US Appraisal Institute (2001) classified the forces that affect land use as the cultural, political and economic attitudes of society. These forces culminate in laws that often dictate the purposes for doing appraisals. Once the legal definition of the asset is understood, valuers can decide on the valuation process that will support the final valuation approach.

This article introduces a computer model, which emphasizes panel design for draglines deployed in direct side-casting mode. The study covers flat and inclined coal-seam conditions with the dragline operating along the strike-line. Two casting methods are embedded in the model: material is placed in the open set adjacent to the one on which the dragline is located (the DNS method) and material is placed in the open set adjacent to the one the dragline excavates (the DND method). While in the first method the unproductive walking time is reduced as the set is enlarged, in the second method the cycle time is lessened as the dragline swings along an acute angle. The side-casting model is shaped so as to provide several panel configurations instead of a single one to conform to the characteristics for an opencast mine. This is achieved by assigning the pit width an interval of values ranging from a minimum to a maximum. The model includes solutions to other critical design parameters such as: set length, swing angles at key cut and main cut positions, and required dragline reach at key cut and main cut positions. The model outcomes reveal the following: the stripping operation is largely affected when the coal-seam is inclined. The downhill spoiling mode should be applied wherever possible. The DNS pattern allows wider pit width intervals as well as longer sets and longer reaches.

The current investigation centres on accelerated coseismic deformation described by the kinematics of failure and on softening, as well as the characterization of areas of interest by measures of the seismic response at such sites.

Experimental results are presented that test the hypothesis that the descaling behaviour of stainless steel slabs following reheating is controlled by interfacial roughening at the scale-steel interface. In this investigation, two stainless steels were considered: type 304 (austenitic, with 18% Cr and 8% Ni) and type 412 (ferritic/martensitic, with 11.6% Cr). It was found that the entanglement that arises at the scale-steel interface was in fact effective in maintaining scale-steel adhesion, under the mechanical descaling conditions used. In the case of type 304, descaling proceeded by fracture along chromite layers, which formed (by internal oxidation) on the austenite grain boundaries; for this steel, the extent of descaling depends most strongly on austenite grain structure, and not primarily on the conditions in the reheating furnace. In contrast, type 412 samples descaled only at the edge of the entangled zone, and showed a greater sensitivity to the reheating conditions; specifically, higher free oxygen in the reheating gas and longer reheating times were found to increase the residual scale thickness. Geotechnical models developed during the planning stages of open pit mines are three-dimensional so as to capture the spatial variation in lithological, structural, hydrogeological, and geomechanical conditions. Geological models that describe the lithological and structural (faulting and folding) characteristics of a deposit are always 3D. Likewise, boreholes and piezometers used to develop geomechanical properties and groundwater models are drilled at spatial offsets across the deposit to understand the lateral and vertical characteristics. Yet when geotechnical analysis is completed, often the three-dimensional geological, hydrogeological, and structural models as well as geometrically complex 3D mine designs for optimizing economic mineral recovery and overburden removal are simplified to two-dimensional sections. In this paper we demonstrate that this simplification can lead to the wrong failure mechanism being identified, analysed, and/or a conservative factor of safety being calculated and hence an over-estimation of slope stability. Through case studies we show how three-dimensional analysis methods are more suited to rock slopes, particularly those with anisotropic material strength, when singularities such as geological faults are present, and nonlinear slope geometry. When the same slopes are analysed in two dimensions, the failure mechanism calculated is often fundamentally incorrect. The case studies further reveal that the factor of safety calculated in three dimensions is not always higher than the two-dimensional factor of safety.
