The Conference began with registration, followed by a well-attended cocktail party on the evening of Sunday 25th, where, in a convivial atmosphere, Dr Louw Alberts, President of Mintek, welcomed the delegates and wished them an enjoyable and informative week. The Conference was formally opened by the Minister Mineral and Energy Affairs, the Honourable Mr D. W. Steyn, at 9hOO on Monday. Sketching the history of Mintek and its predecessors, Minister Steyn described the objective and achievements of Mintek, as well as the background to mineral-processing research in South Africa and the policy of the South African government towards the development of the mineral industry.

Crossroads for Students Students in their matriculation year, whatever their background, have reached a crossroads in their lives: behind them lie the relatively carefree years of childhood; ahead lies the whole of their working lives. Whether those working lives will be rewarding and interesting depends to considerable extent on whether they get 'a good matric' and carry on to some form of further education. IPMI awards 1985 Nominations for the 1985 Awards are now being accepted by the Awards Committee of the International Precious Metals Institute. THE DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT AWARD was established to recognize important career contributions to the advancement of precious metals, be it technological, economic, or business.

The mining rock-mass rating (MAMA) classification system was introduced in 1974 as a development of the CSIA geomechanics classification system to cater for diverse mining situations. The fundamental difference was the recognition that in situ rock-mass ratings (AMA) had to be adjusted according to the mining environment so that the final ratings (MAMA) could be used for mine design. The adjustment parameters are weathering, mining-induced stresses, joint orientation, and blasting effects. It is also possible to use the ratings (AMA) in the determination of empirical rock-mass strength (AMS) and then in the application of the adjustments to arrive at a design rock-mass strength (DAMS). This classification system is versatile, and the rock-mass rating (AMA), the mining rock-mass rating (MAMA), and the design rock-mass strength (DAMS) provide good guidelines for the purposes of mine design. However, in some cases a more detailed investigation may be required, in which case greater attention is paid to specific parameters of the system. Narrow and weak geological features that are continuous within and beyond the stope or pillar must be identified and rated separately. The paper describes the procedure required to arrive at the ratings, and presents practical examples of the application of the system to mine design.

1. Book review . Fundamentals of fracture mechanics, by J.F. Knot. London, Buterworths, 1981 (reprint). Reviewer: G. Leadbeater The present reviewer approached the above book as a relative novice on the intricate details of fracture mechanics. Thus, the review is based to a great extent on how easily the information presented can be assimilated and understood, and how the book's format and content facilitate this. The paper describes the difficulties experienced with inferior coking coals as Iscor began using larger blast furnaces for the production of liquid iron. Research conducted at Iscor from 1977 to 1979 showed that benefits could be gained from the use of partially briqueted charges, and it was decided to install briqueting plants at the Vanderbijlpark and Newcastle Works. Details are given of the later plant, which was supplied by a consortium consisting of Voest Alpine, Didier Engineering, and Sumitomo Metal Industries. Sumitomo also supplied information on the optimization of coke quality along the lines of their Sumicoal System. The results have been a marked improvement in coke quality, much better blast-furnace operation, and increased productivity.

This presentation describes a technique under development referred to as Selective Blast Mining. The technique involves millisecond sequential blasting. It applies to mines where the gold bearing conglomerate band is clearly demarcated, and separated from the waste rock in the foot and hanging wall. The width of the conglomerate band should be less than ± 0,7 metres. A research program was initiated in August 1994 by Drs RE. Robinson and I.E. Bock. The objectives were to develop new blasting methods that can reduce: ? the losses of gold in narrow reef stoping. Losses of gold can be as much as 10-15% ? and to introduce selective mining to reduce ore dilution with waste rock.

The current expansion programme requires production to be derived from new mines, using the most modern equipment. Considerable forward planning is required. Qualifications: Applicants should possess a degree or diploma in Mining Engineering. Caving is the lowest cost underground mining method provided that the draw point spacing, draw point size, and ore-handling facilities are designed to suit the caved material, and that the draw point horizon can be maintained for the life of the draw. In the near future, several open-pit mines that produce more than 50 kt per day will have to examine the feasibility of converting to low-cost, large-scale underground operations. Several other large scale, low-grade underground operations will experience major changes in their mining environments as large dropdowns are implemented These changes demand a more realistic approach to mine planning than in the past, where existing operations have been projected to increased depths with little consideration of the change in mining environment that will occur. As economics force the consideration of underground mining of large, competent ore bodies by low-cost methods, the role of cave mining will have to be defined In the past, caving was generally considered for rockmasses that cave and fragment readily. The ability to define cavability and fragmentation, the availability of large, robust load-haul-dump units, a better understanding of draw-control requirements, improved drilling equipment for secondary blasting, and reliable cost data have shown that competent orebodies with coarse fragmentation can be exploited by cave mining at a much lower cost than by drill-and blast methods.

Satellite observation of mine-dump vegetation by B. P. GILBERTSON, M.Sc. (Phys.) (Visitor) and D. T. WILLlAMSON, B.A., LLB., B.A. Hons. (Visitor) NASA's first Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-I) was launched on 23rd July, 1972, and has subsequently gathered multispectral imagery of most of Southern Africa from an orbital altitude of 900 km. Images of the Witwaters rand area have been studied in an attempt to differentiate between mine dumps having varying degrees of vegetative cover. At this stage it is clear that the various mine dumps can be located and identified, and differences in vegetative cover can be seen and measured. Patterns of vegetative growth, some characteristic to particular dumps, can also be seen.

Recent advances in the design and performance of flotation equipment A General Meeting and Colloquium on the above topic was held on 12th March, 1975, at Kelvin House, Johannesburg. The Colloquium was attended by 250 delegates and was opened by the Immediate Past President, Mr P. W. J. van Rensburg, at 09h30. Obituary Mr Van Rensburg announced with regret the deaths of James Alfred Boyd, Life Fellow, and Jack Joseph Frankel, Fellow. Training of technicians The Institute has received a letter from The Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers pointing out that there is considerable opportunity for the training of Coloured and Bantu technicians and artisans, and that the existing facilities will be extended as the demand for them increases.

The transportation of men, material and rock in mechanization programmes is often neglected, or at least plays only a secondary function, as the primary focus is on proving the technology. This is despite recognition of the fact that mechanization is essential if gold mines are to remain competitive. However, the use of totally mechanized systems will require further research in the short to medium term before they become generally available. Thus, there is a real need to improve mechanized men, material and rock transportation systems as they are currently used. This applies to both reef horizons as well as to horizontal transport systems. Rates of return realized on investments in the gold mines of the newer goldfields outside the Witwatersrand were calculated and analysed over various time intervals and on various bases. It is shown that these rates of return are strongly correlated with changes in the gold price and cannot be equated with the returns that are expected when investments are made, and that the changes in gold price also affect the rates of return on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange as a whole. These correlations are used, together with a limited application of the Capital Asset Pricing Model, to suggest the expected levels of threshold returns in real terms for new mining projects, for projects on existing mines, and for share valuations.

Consideration is given to the technical and economic feasibility of freeze desalination as a technique for the simultaneous provision of ice to cool deep mines and for the desalination of mine water. Freeze desalination has not been developed fully or commercially. For sea-water applications, it may not offer significant advantages over other methods of desalination but, for the unique mining application, a single dual purpose plant that produces desalinated ice could offer significant cost savings over combinations of separate desalinators and ice-makers. The current status 01 freeze desalination is reviewed, and the important aspects relating to mines are discussed. Some freezing processes that could be suitably modified are described. The possible use of conventional ice-making machines for desalinating mine water is also discussed.

The Schools A school on 'Measurement, Process Control and Optimization in the Minerals Industry', organized by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was presented twice by course leader Dr Ken Garner, ably assisted by the staff of the Measurement and Control Division of Mintek. The first school was held from 16th to 20th July, 1984, at the University of the Witwatersrand, and the second from 11th to 15th February, 1985, at Mintek. Project development The Sydney Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy will hold a second Project Development Symposium in Sydney between 7th and 10th October, 1986. This second symposium will extend the range of topics covered by its predecessor in 1983 to emphasize planning (including strategic planning), construction, and project commissioning.

By use of models based on the South African gold-mining industry, analyses are made of the effects of changes in the mining tax structure on the .State's tax income from potential new mines; also on the percentage of such mines likely. to be proceeded with. The percentage is affected by the correlation between changes in taxation and in the flotation pay limits !or new mines. It is shown that the State stands to gain both directly and indirectly from raising the level of the capital allowance and from its extension to all mines; and that the reduced taxation resulting from a lowering of the discriminatory high tax formula for the gold mines, would, in respect of potential new mines, be compensated for by a significant increase in the percentage of such mines that would be proceeded with.
