An existing 1 800 m long pipeline, which carried waste mica slurry from kaolin processing, is to be recommissioned. The mica solids throughput is to be substantially increased from 5.2 t/h up to a maximum of9.53 t/h, but with a typical throughput of around 7.5 t/h. Because of this throughput increase, it was unclear whether the existing 80 mm diameter pipe would be adequate. In addition, the pipe route is to be extended by 250 m to 2 050m, and its elevation at discharge to settling lagoons increased from 66.2 m to 80 m. The pipeline hydraulics of waste mica slurry were investigated for the 80 mm diameter pipe using the Saskatchewan Research Council?s (SRC) Two-Layer Flow Model, for the maximum mica solids throughput of 9.53t/h. The pipe operating velocity was compared with the predicted deposit velocity for several mica concentrations, ranging from 20% to 50% by weight. Estimates were made of the total differential pressure across the proposed2 050 m long pipeline, as well as the power imparted to the slurry by the pump, and the specific energy consumption (SEC). Two pipe diameters were assumed: 80 mm when no mica wall deposit is present, and 70 mm when there is a 5mm mica wall deposit. This parameter has a significant effect on the determination of the appropriate pipe operating conditions. For the pipe operating velocity to remain adequately above the deposit velocity (and therefore for the heterogeneous flow pattern to prevail in either horizontal or inclined pipe), it was concluded that if the newly commissioned pipeline contains no mica wall deposit, the pipe should initially be operated at a mica concentration of between 20% and 25% by weight, probably with a target mica concentration of about 23%. PRESENT Minutes of the Annual General Meeting, held on Friday the 20th August, 1971, at 7.45 p.m. in the Boulevard Hotel, Witbank. Mr J. Meintjies in the Chair, 15 Fellows, 7 Members, 2 Associate Members and 10 Visitors. Mr Meintjies extended a welcome to all the members and their wives, and the many visitors and their wives. A special welcome to Mr Robinson the outgoing President of the Institute and Prof. Howat the President Elect and Mrs Howat. The minutes were read and adopted. The Chairman read his Report for the past year and also the Financial Statement. Mr E. Jackson proposed the acceptance of the Financial Statement and Mr Winship seconded it. Mr Meintjies thanked Mr Vic Robinson for all the help he had given throughout the past year. He also thanked the outgoing Committee for their support, and the Secretary for arranging the function. Mr Meintjies congratulated Mr Alex Bain on his election as Chairman and asked him to continue with the meeting. The addition of binder to full plant tailings significantly affects the rheology of a backfill mixture and, consequently, the pressure gradients in the pipeline. The binder increases the yield stress and apparent viscosity of the mixture, and the transition velocity between the laminar and turbulent flow regimes. In a test conducted at a slurry relative density of 1,72 with binder addition, the mixture also exhibited time-dependent behaviour owing to the hydration of the binder.

(Visitor) An account is given of an investigation of the use of a continuous particle-size monitor - the PSM-IOO. The monitor system, in addition to showing marked variations in grinding fineness over short periods of time, particularly after stopping and re-starting the feed to the mill, has indicated weaknesses in accepted mill operating practice. The main potential of the system is the opportunity it has provided for almost complete automation of the milling circuit.

HOWAT, B.Sc., Ph.D.(Fellow) An account is given of a laboratory experiment in which the resistivity of a primary slag like those produced in the manufacture of high-carbon ferrochromium was measured at current densities typical of operation in a submergedarc furnace. It was shown that the current flow from graphite elec trode to molten slag obeys Ohm's Law when electrode current densities are less than 12 A/cm". At higher current densities, arcing occurs from the electrode tip to the slag, causing an imbalance in the rate of heating in the furnace burden.

In order to test the applicability of elastodynamic codes in the modeling of mining related problems, comparisons are made between seismic data and numerical analyses. The dynamic finite difference program WA VE is used for the modeling of a horizontal stope in a deep mine. The slip along a vertical fault situated within the positive excess shear stress lobe of the stope initiates seismic waves. The stope-fault geometry is modeled in both two and three dimensions. The three dimensional non-slip weakening WAVE analyses correlate well with Brune's analytical model. For accurate modeling of the peak particle velocities predicted by McGarr's empirical relationship, it is recommended that a three-dimensional stope -fault model is used, with the amount of slip weakening dependent on the magnitude of the event.

Rapid fouling of condenser tubes in underground refrigeration plants is a frequent occurrence. It leads to low heat transfer efficiencies, with consequent serious reduction in capacity and increase in the horse-power requirement of the units. High pressures develop in the condensers, and frequent cleaning of the tube bundles is required. The cleaning operation takes up to 8 hours and in some cases results in significant loss of production. One of the possible causes of fouling is deposition of scale, but this can be readily overcome by controlling the concentration of the water. When water evaporates, the dissolved solids remain behind; thus evaporation increases the amount of dissolved solids per unit volume. If half the original volume evaporates, the concentration of the dissolved solids is doubled and the water is said to have a 'concentration' of two. Concentration may be controlled by regulating the amount of water allowed to bleed from the system. The actual concentration value required is a function of the chemical analysis of the circulating cooling water. In one instance, where the problem of scale formation had been eliminated, fouling still persisted, and the possibility of excessive quantities of dust in the re-circulating water was investigated. A dispersing reagent was added to the condenser cooling water as a means of preventing sludge deposition in the condenser tubes. As shown by curve A in Fig. 1 the reagent addition did not decrease the rate of fouling.

METRICATION In order to bring South Africa into line with metric countries the world over and in view of the indisputable advantages of using the comma as a decimal sign, the Metrication Advisory Board has decided to recommend that the comma be used consistently as decimal sign as from April 1, 1971. Numbers consisting of more than three figures are separated by spaces into groups of three to the left and right of the comma, and not by commas, e.g... 2 734 671,512 73 A quantity such as 12,41 kg is read as "twelve comma four one kilograms" and 31,34 km as "thirty-one comma three four kilometres." A motor-car previously described as a 3.8 litre model now becomes a 3,8 litre model. THE BRITISH COUNCIL AWARDS 1972-1973 The British Council invites applications from permanent residents of all races in the Republic of South Africa and South West Africa, for the following awards:- SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships are available to such residents who hold University degrees or comparable professional qualifications. The scholarships are tenable for post-graduate study at Universities and other educational establishments in Britain for the academic year of approximately ten months beginning 1st October 1972. All arrangements will be made by the British Council and the scholarships will include tuition fees, a maintenance allowance, approved travel in Britain, return fares to Britain, a books grant and a clothing grant. The closing date for applications is 31st July, 1971. BURSARIES Bursaries are available to such permanent residents who hold University degrees or who, being already established in their professions or trades, hold other qualifications. The bursaries are tenable at British educational in-institutions or other suitable establishments in Britain for a course of training, study or research lasting not less than two months or more than six. The British Council will arrange full programmes and professional contacts, and the bursaries will include a maintenance grant, a books grant, authorised course fees and certain other expenses. The British Council may, at its discretion, bear the cost of single or return fares to Britain. The closing date for application is 31st July, 1971. TRAVEL GRANTS Travel grants each of £300 are available in respect of journeys to Britain undertaken between 1st April, 1972, and 31st March, 1973, and are provided to facilitate visits to British Universities by persons holding staff appointments or graduate research posts at South African Universities. Visits must normally be of at least six months duration though grants are occasionally made for visits lasting for one complete term. Grant holders will make their own arrangements with the universities which they wish to visit and will be responsible for finding their own accommodation. This presentation provides comments on the increasing challenges associated with pit slope designs from the perspective of a design reviewer. Besides the technical issues related to the significant increase in current and proposed slope heights since the primary methodology in current use for pit slope designs was developed, other factors are coming into play. These include changes in mining equipment and associated operating practices, as well as a growing awareness on the part of mining executives and other stakeholders of the significance of stable, or at least well-managed, slopes. In the latter area, the associated clarification of responsibility has led to the increased use of either in-house or independent review consultants working on the behalf of management. From a technical perspective, since the mid-1970?s there have been significant improvements in the tools, particularly analytical methods, that are available to slope designers. There is also an increased understanding of the importance of a detailed geological model, with strong emphasis on alteration and/or structure to form the platform for the slope designs. However, the basic technology for determining the rock strength aspects has changed little, although an expanding body of experience is being accumulated in its use and there is a reasonable degree of comfort in its application for slope heights of up to at least 500 m. In addition, slope management is now viewed as a critical part of the implementation of slope designs and this has been supported by continuing improvements in slope monitoring systems. In recent years safety has become a primary concern, in part as a result of some major slope failures that have attracted the attention of regulators and the public, as well as mining executives, who are being held more responsible for unsafe conditions and associated events. There is therefore a growing demand for risk assessments to replace the deterministic design approaches upon which the current design technology is largely based. The focus of mine executives on safety has undoubtedly in part facilitated the recent long overdue revitalization of research into the design and stability of large pit slopes, the requirement for which has been recognized for many years by practitioners. This research, as well as the CSIRO Large Open Pit Study, will almost certainly provide advances beyond the empirical strength determination methods such as the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, which form the basis for current rockmass strength determination. At the same time, as mentioned above, there is a growing awareness of the requirement for a detailed structural model as a major component of every large slope design. In addition, other areas requiring further research include the impact of groundwater pressures on rock mass strength, particularly in rocks with low permeabilities, and the role of stress in high open pit slopes. From the perspective of design implementation, even with the recent significant advances in metal prices, mine operators remain under pressure to minimize mining costs. To address these constraints, mining equipment of ever increasing size is being introduced. There are, however, some disadvantages to this trend in the area of slope design. For example, the large electric shovels are not well designed for scaling bench faces, nor are they cost effective in this mode. As a result, specialized equipment may be needed in the mining cycle to perform the clean-up duties, which in turn increases operating costs. Further, where the large equipment is used in minimum width pushbacks to reduce the instantaneous stripping ratio, the advance rates can be high, but at the same time the associated changes in operating procedures are often not conducive to the concurrent use of such measures as controlled blasting, careful scaling and drain hole installation that generally improve stability. The resulting conflicts which may arise between the interests of production and those of slope stability are often exacerbated by the fact that these stabilization techniques actually increase the operating costs on which the operations manager is frequently judged, even though there is an overall increase in profit. Meeting the objective of developing slope designs which are practicable , i.e., achievable in terms of every aspect of the operating constraints in the specific pit, requires interaction and compromise between the geotechnical engineer, mine planners and operating staff during the formulation of the design criteria. In the current environment, it is often no longer sufficient to present slope designs in deterministic terms to a mine planner who accepts them almost without question. Increasingly, the requirement is that they be proposed within the framework of risk levels, related both to safety and to economic outcomes, to a decision maker who may not be a technical expert in the mining field. In this context, the mine executives must have sufficient information and understanding to be able to establish acceptable levels of risk for the company and other stakeholders; in this process the slope designers must play a major role. These changing requirements for presentation of slope designs necessitate clear communication of the basis for the design, which may be very complex, so that the implications of the designs may be thoroughly understood by all concerned. To ensure clarity at this stage, the slope designer must not only quantify the uncertainty in the input parameters, including the geological model, but must also be able to communicate and defend the resulting design recommendations. Where particular designs may have high associated risks, simply because of the degree of uncertainty in the data, this must also be recognized and proposed methods of reducing the uncertainty included in the presentation. In summary, from a reviewer?s perspective slope designs must not only be technically sound, but must also address the broader context of the mining operation as a whole, taking into account such factors as safety aspects, the available equipment to implement the designs, and the acceptable risk levels for the company. In addition, the designs must be presented in a way that will allow the mine executives, who are ultimately responsible, and the operators, who implement the designs, to fully understand the basis and short-comings of the designs and the risks associated with deviation from any constraints defined by the designer. It goes without saying that there must also be a well-defined monitoring system to confirm stability and detect and manage any variations in the design model or unexpected instability.

The results of slow crushing tests in a stiff testing machine for both small and large step reductions of particle size are given. The energy consumption required to produce a given weight of minus 74 um material was determined when both single-crystal quartz and Witwatersrand reef were crushed. For comparison the two materials tested were also comminuted in a ball mill under optimum conditions. There are indications that slow crushing under stiff conditions is the most efficient method of breakage that can be devised. The comparison with ball milling results thus yields a value for the efficiency of ball milling of approximately 80 per cent. These results confirm that the best current estimates of milling efficiency, which are based on the free boundary surface energy of the material being milled, are probably too low by at least one order of magnitude.

The paper describes how a multivariable control scheme was developed and implemented for the run-of-mine milling circuit at a gold mine belonging to Vaal Reefs Exploration & Mining Company Limited. The key variables that are controlled are slurry level in the sump, mass of material in the mil, and product size. The control scheme has resulted in reliable control of the dynamics of the plant, and has provided a good basis for the optimization of plant operation by the selection of suitable set Points.

An investigation into the stability of large open stopes at Premier diamond mine, Culinan, South Africa, is described. The open stopes are located in a weak kimberlite orebody, directly underneath a 75 m-thick sill of gabbro. Two and three-dimensional stress analyses were carried out in a back-analysis of the stresses and failure around the first open stope created under the sill. The results were used in the prediction of the future stability of the planned open stopes, intervening pillars, and sill.

Discussion I. R. M. Cheston (Visitor): I should like to congratulate the authors on this interesting paper which graphically illustrates the overall effects of the gradual developments in diamond concentrating processes which have taken place over the past few years. These final stages of diamond concentration represent only a minor factor in the cost of diamond production but because of the shortage of highly trained people for this work, any easing of the burden on the sorting staff has an importance far beyond the immediate economic sphere. The search for the solution of problems posed by the economic and social conditions of industry is never-ending. The Diamond Research Laboratory is, even now, carrying out further work to improve still more the operation of general diamond recovery processes as described in the paper. Before looking at some of the latest developments in this field of final recovery, there are a few points arising from the paper on which I would like to comment. On page 321, reference is made to the X-ray sorters originally developed by the DRL. The paper gives a figure of 100 per cent recovery of diamonds from +7 mesh concentrates in two passes through the prototype machine. Not wishing to claim miraculous powers for our group, I would prefer to see this given as virtually 100 per cent recovery of all fluorescing diamonds. Firstly however much care is taken, there is bound to be an occasional operating loss. In the test work, 100 per cent recovery was made on many occasions but this was not always so. Secondly, although most diamonds fluoresce strongly under X-rays, some diamonds only fluoresce weakly. Type IIB diamonds, in fact hardly fluoresce at all, but the incidence of this special type of diamond is very low in most deposits. However, in operating the commercial X-ray machines, there is a certain background level of reflected radiation from other feed particles. Unless the diamond fluorescence is several times greater than this, it is not possible to achieve sufficient sensitivity in ejection. A certain small but variable proportion of diamonds from each deposit is always found to fluoresce too weakly to be recovered by the X-ray machine. Tests have shown, that for the De Beers mines, this proportion is considerably less than I per cent. These diamonds are nearly all dark brown or black in colour and therefore of low value. The degree of fluorescence does not, however, depend entirely on the colour or quality of the diamond and some of the brightest fluorescence comes from the lowest quality of boart diamonds. Investigations into the property of the diamond which causes this low fluorescence are being carried out. On page 322 it is suggested that zircon fluoresces in the same colour spectrum as the diamond. This is not quite accurate. The total light given out by zircon under X-rays is of the same order as that of diamond. However the zircon radiation has a much wider spectrum band than the diamond fluorescence. Reference is also made on page 322 to the effect of selective milling in small laboratory mills on diamonds. Perfect diamonds are very hard and very strong and are extremely difficult to break. Imperfect diamonds, which form the majority of diamonds recovered from most deposits, although hard, can be very brittle. Even under slight impact some of these diamonds may shatter to powder. Milling conditions must therefore be extremely closely controlled to minimize breakage, and even so, some breakage will always occur. As suggested in the paper, the necessary conditions are: the use of small balls, slow speed mills and very limited water addition. Tests elsewhere have suggested that the water content of the pulp in such a mill must be less than 25 per cent by weight of pulp to prevent diamond breakage reaching significant proportions. The skin flotation techniques described on page 323 operate on a very small scale. It is of interest to note that in West Africa a large-scale continuous skin flotation machine is used to recover the fine diamonds. In this operation the feed is dried and, after standing, is mixed with water and fed in a single layer onto a woven phosphor-bronze conveyor belt. This belt runs at a shallow angle into a water bath and as the particles are carried through the air-water-interface, the diamonds float off and over a weir into a collecting box. The bulk of the particles, being wettable, sink to the bottom of the tank and are continuously removed. If treated without prior drying, the diamond recovery is poor. If material is treated immediately after drying, a lot of the gangue particles also float. During standing, in the hot and humid atmosphere of West Africa, it is found that the gangue particles recover their wettability much faster than the diamond particles. Optimum selectivity is obtained after standing for approximately 24 hours. At the DRL we have been experimenting with optical filters to differentiate between the fluorescence of diamonds and zircon. These allow the determination of milling parameters for the - optimization of ball size and pulp density in operating mills estimation of the performance of new feed stocks in an existing mill - estimation of the expected milling performance for a new project. Information on the estimation of the size of mills to deliver specified amounts of comminution energy, and amount of expected ball, rod, and liner wear to allow cost estimates for new projects, is also included.

An account is given of the development of a relatively simple model that describes the kinetics of the absorption of gold cyanide on activated carbon. The model is based on the treatment of the carbon solution interface as a homogeneous boundary across which gold is transported at a rate determined by the rate of mass transport to and from the interface. Rate equations derived from this model describe the results of various kinetic experiments under continuous or batch conditions in the laboratory and on operating pilot and full-scale plants.

The 10th Annual UCT -US Minerals Processing Symposium was held at the Van Riebeeck Hotel at Gordon's Bay from 31 July to 2 August 1991. The conference was attended by 133 delegates representing a broad cross-section of the mining and metallurgical industry in South Africa. For the first time the Symposium, which was celebrating its 10th anniversary, was extended to two days. A cal for papers was announced and the organizers were inundated with responses resulting in a very full technical programme which consisted of 29 oral and 15 poster presentations.

Tests were conducted during the middle of this year to evaluate techniques and the equipment used in a novel continuous mining system for use in narrow reef tabular orebodies. Equipment was designed and supplied to test a mechanized drilling rig, a selection of rock breaking techniques and an integrated rock removal system, mounted on a self-advancing reciprocating flight conveyer. As the rock breaking techniques do not depend on the use of large quantities of conventional explosive the systems and equipment employed here have the potential to run continuously for 24hours per day. Whilst the tests carried out use simple prototype equipment employing established technologies, the long-term objective remains the use of sophisticated machinery capable of running continuously and un-manned, only interrupted by brief service intervals. Selective photo reduction, using the semiconductor TiO2 under UV irradiation, has been investigated as a possible recovery and/or separation method for the PGM's rhodium, palladium and platinum. The effect of pH value and concentration of the sacrificial reducing agent (ethanol) on the rate of reduction of Rh (III), Pd (II) and Pt(IV) ions have been determined separately for these ions as well as for some mixtures. Conditions favourable for the reduction and adsorption (or precipitation) on TiO2 have been established. It has been found that already deposited Pt or Pd metal promotes reduction of Rh (III) ions at a pH value where it would not otherwise be reduced. A method for the separation of a mixture comprising Rh (III), Pd(II) and Pt (IV), based on photo reduction and adsorption on the TiO2, is proposed.
