'Gee Whiz', a nationwide schools' science and technology competition, is being screened on SATY1 on Friday evenings at 18:00. Twenty-seven schools from al over South Africa are taking part in the series, which will run for 13 weeks. The participating schools were selected on the basis of their performance in the National Youth Science Olympiad and in Mintek's Minsa science competition, which has been organized on an annual basis since 1988.

SYNOPSIS The phase equilibria, viscosities and sulphur capacities of titaniferous slags were determined in the composition range of CaO = 30 to 0 per cent, MgO = 0 to 30 per cent, SiO2 = 19.69 per cent, AI.O. = 13.12 per cent and TiO2 = 37.19 per cent. The phase equilibria were determined by high temperature microscopy, the viscosities were measured using a rotating outer cylinder viscometer and the sulphur capacities were evaluated from the results obtained by equilibrating the slag in a gas stream of CO, CO2 and SO2. The behaviour of these titaniferous slags under reducing conditions was examined. Possible use of the slags for aggregate, or slag-cement, and the possibility of extracting the TiO2 are discussed. Applied geophysical methods such as the surface seismic method have been applied for many years and in many places, mainly for oil exploration and to a lesser extent for mineral deposits? exploration in sedimentary basins. The seismic method fundamental is based on the variations of acoustic impedance in a layered earth model and such variations at each main geological interface create reflected waves that are processed and imaged in order to output a clear picture of the subsurface structure. The geology of South Africa was historically, and even until recently, considered as unfit for seismic exploration and the mines were always reluctant to spend any portions of their exploration budgets on these techniques. Hard rocks and high P-waves velocities were creating quite a hopeless model for any mine geologist or geophysicist (if any), unsuitable for the proper use of seismic waves to image their subsurface problems. Boreholes were considered the only reliable tool to derive a geological image of the mine structural features and were linked sometimes with surface methods such as aero-magnetism. The obvious flaw of this methodology was the inability to derive a continuous image from a discrete set of measurement points. Surface 3D seismic is the tool that gives a reliable solution from the initial model extracted from the boreholes, as even the aero-magnetism mapping gives a flat image, unable to show any depth correlation from well to well. The first 3D surface seismic surveys were recorded in the early Nineties only for the gold mines of the Witwatersrand, after a series of serious new shaft sinking failures. The wrong geological locations of these shafts resulted in financial loss of several hundred million rands. The era of3D seismic just started in South Africa and till 1997, all seismic done in the country was for gold exploration with geological target depths close to the oil exploration average depth of investigation. A very important breakthrough was reached when the depth accuracy of the seismic image was tested in real scale as the stopes were surveyed. An error of amplitude of 20 m was usual when true depth was compared with the seismic image predicted depth and shape. This accuracy, completely unknown in oil exploration, started to gain supporters of seismic methods in the mining community but the cash problems and the concentration/disappearance of gold mines in the late Nineties, led to the belief that seismic would be just a very short exploration activity for the mining sector. ort exploration activity for the mining sector. But starting in 1998 with Impala, a tremendous and continuous 3D surface seismic activity occurred in the platinum mining sector. The seismic world got used to new terms such a Merensky and UG2, which have replaced the VCR and black reef. If the primary expectation of platinum surface 3D seismic was to determine and ascertain new shaft locations, as for the gold mines, the quality of seismic data led the mine geologists to require smaller and smaller imaging of geological objects. In addition to the main structural image, small faults, potholes, and shear zone were common expectations of platinum seismic. In a constant velocity environment, what saved the day was the sharp density contrast between the PGM reef and the embedding geology. A good contrast of impedance exists in the whole Bushveld and is sufficient to have enough reflected waves from the PGM main layers to build a high quality seismic image of the subsurface. Recent advances in technology have led in less than 10years to major improvements in the seismic acquisition by using high frequency vibrating seismic sources, but also in processing and interpretation. With these latest improvements, seismic can detect objects of 7.5 m size, either fault throws, flexures, etc. The PGM formations of the Eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex are now accessible for seismic imaging, with cost per square kilometre comparable to the borehole cost of the same surface unit. The economically acceptable seismic surveys can be used for UG2 structural imaging up to a depth of 210 m below surface. Linked with borehole information, 3D seismic today offers a wide range of information for mine development: structural imaging, small fault detection, pothole and shear zone identification. All users of 3D seismic have also used this technique as a tool in the process to qualify their mineral reserves and especially from the category ?inferred? to the category ?measured?. Junior mining companies, in the feasibility stage of their projects, are also quite eager to use seismic as a reserve certification tool, when they present financial statements to future potential investors. The current high demand on platinum, pushes the seismic towards new technologies to be implemented in order to improve the final image. Using surface and borehole seismic together or acquiring seismic surveys with multi-component receivers have been just introduced in South Africa. In less than 10 years, surface seismic by adapting its methods to the special case of the Bushveld, became a mandatory step in mine development and ore resources evaluation. As part of the ?seismic? world we are proud to be a major player the ?surge? of platinum exploration and production in these last years and we will certainly increase our synergy with the mine sectors in the exciting coming years.

This paper details the preliminary design work carried out before and during the implementation of an extensive backfilling programme on Cooke 3 Shaft, Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company (Witwatersrand) Limited. The design work is of relevance to any system utilizing a cementitious binder, and the quality control aspects are of particular significance. Problems associated with correlating laboratory results to actual field results are also briefly discussed.

There are no manuals or handbooks for budding mill superintendents or process plant managers. Most who obtain this level of responsibility have gained their training from watching the good and bad of their predecessors and the successful ones have themselves graduated from the school of hard knocks. This paper attempts to provide some helpful guidelines and direction for those who aspire to better manage a mineral processing facility. The authors have 20 years combined experience in senior management roles at nine different mineral processing operations in Australia and overseas, covering gold, base metals and mineral sands. This summary of tips and pitfalls will hopefully benefit future leaders in mineral processing and metallurgy.

Without minerals, man cannot possibly hope to maintain his present standard of living. Professional mining men throughout the world, particularly in mineral-exporting countries like South Africa, are faced with the increasingly difficult task of ensuring adequate supplies of minerals. The problems of gradually diminishing mineral reserves and rapidly rising mining costs can to a certain extent be overcome by the use of more-sophisticated technological techniques and by the improvement of efficiency wherever possible. However, there is growing concern in some quarters, that, despite the ingenuity of engineers, geologists, metallurgists, and scientists, the earth's mineral reserves will eventually become insufficient to meet man's needs. In order to ensure the continued well-being of the earth's population, it is therefore imperative that more attention should be paid to mineral research and the training of specialists in the field of mineral reclamation.

In the past few years Orapa and Letlhakane Mines have investigated various new technologies to enhance and improve production. The goal has been to improve productivity, reduce operating costs and make the mines more profitable The advent of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) in the early ’80s brought about the realization of this concept. Orapa and Letlhakane Mines started using GPS in 1999 and it is now used atLetlhakane mine for surveying, vehicle tracking and dispatching and for floor control system. Orapa Mine uses GPS in surveying, floor control and drill navigation. It will also be used for vehicle tracking and dispatching in mid-2001 following the installation of a fleet management and control system. The introduction of GPS at both Orapa and Letlhakane mines have improved productivity and reduced operating costs in the areas of drilling, topographic survey and floor control. In vehicle tracking and dispatching GPS has allowed for real-time information management for timeous decision-making which optimized fleet run time hours.

The concepts involved in flotation research are discussed and aims are presented. Three different methods of investigation can be used, all of which are applied at the National Institute for Metallurgy (N.I.M.), and these are the empirical, trial and error method, the chemical engineering method, and the physicochemical approaches. This paper is devoted to the last of these. Because of the complexity of the physicochemical interactions involved, the work has, to a large extent, been concentrated on only one aspect, viz. the interaction between the mineral surface and reagents in solution, which was considered of major importance in the understanding of the process. The aspects on which work has been done are the concentration of uranium, the reaction between salt minerals and fatty acids, mixed xanthate-cationic collector systems, and the reaction between sulphide minerals and thiol reagents. Selected problems from the first two of these are discussed in some detail and deal with the agglomeration flotation of uranium and the chemical control of the flotation process for phoscorite. A detailed discussion is also presented of the progress made in the understanding of the interaction between sulphide minerals and thiol reagents, which is of more general application. Finally, an indication is given of the future direction of physicochemical research at the N.I.M.

This paper describes the design and construction of the first experimental underground rockcutting machine from measurements of cutting forces determined in tests on small rock specimens in the workshop. The deficiencies of this design, revealed by stoping with almost identical rockcutting machines, are described. An account is given of the design and construction of further experimental machines incorporating substantial improvements which made them technically feasible for use in production.

For the past 12 years, the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town have hosted an annual symposium to discuss research topics in Minerals Processing. Since 1987, this meeting has been held under the auspices of the Western Cape Branch of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and has enjoyed much national and international support. In 1993, in place of the usual Symposium, the Branch and Universities collaborated with CSM Associates Ltd and Minerals Engineering Journal is organizing the international Minerals Engineering '93 Conference in Cape Town.

The flotation separation of the Rosh Pinah ore into lead and zinc concentrates are based on the selective flotation of the lead containing minerals followed by the activation and recovery of the zinc sulfides. In the present work the influence of the composition of the water on the selective flotation of the lead containing minerals is reviewed and the results given of the laboratory investigation of the influence of activating species such as silver, lead and copper, on the selective recovery of lead minerals from the Rosh Pinah ore. It was found that it was difficult to prevent the activation of the sphalerite by the metal species in solution in the absence of cyanide, and that colloidal precipitates most probably also serves as a significant carrier of these activators in the flotation circuit. Removal of heavy metal species from the solution by means of an adsorbent is possible, but most probably not practical.

The Mineral Resource that a mining company has access to, represents the majority of the embedded value that exists within the company, as well as the competitive advantage that the company has over its peers. However the real value is only realised once effective mining plans have been put in place, which optimise the extraction of the Resource, and add measurable value to the Company. The concept of Mineral Resource Management has been developed in South Africa, to ensure this optimisation happens in an integrated and quantifiable manner, such that value is added and risk is reduced, resulting in bottom line improvement for the stakeholders of the business. This paper describes the process of Mineral Resource Management, and draws on successes and failures of various companies, to illustrate how it should be implemented, and what measures should be put in place to ensure its success. This requires a fundamental re-appraisal of the way in which mining companies plan and execute their businesses, and focuses attention on real value adding activities and behaviour through the use of Economic Value Added as an appropriate metric by which to measure real value and risk. Specifically, the paper focuses on these aspects as applied to planning models and processes, exploration activity and risk management, to ensure operational and project success.

The lift system is the main part in manganese nodule mining on the ocean bed. It connects the nodule collection system (miner) with the surface platform (mining vessel) and transports the nodules from the ocean bed to the surface. China started the research on lift technology in deep ocean mining in 1991, and a slurry pump hydraulic lift method has been developed for the nodule mining system. The detailed slurry pump hydraulic lift experiments have been undertaken with crushed nodules in the vertical pipe. The lift parameters to lift coarse particles in the lift pipeline have been discussed, including the pressure drop, the solid concentration, and the mixture velocity. The author of this paper not only took part in all these studies on the lifting technology, but was also responsible for some of this research. This paper will present the component parts of the lift system and the research results of coarse particle mixture flow in the vertical lift pipeline. Samples of water that had been collected underground from eight gold mines in South Africa were subjected comprehensive analysis of the quality of the waters, and their corrosivity on mild steel was measured by the laboratory techniques of extrapolation from Tafel plots and of polarization resistance. The results indicate that, if such factors as pH, Langelier index, and degree of aeration are beyond certain specified limits, the corrosivity ofthe water is affected. The applicability of the corrosivity index in predictions ofthe degree corrosion is questioned. Suggestions are included for future work involving the fundamental characterization of the corrosivity of mine waters.

Coalbrook Collieries has produced approximately 2 million tons of coal by retreat longwalling since April 1976. Strata control. support. stone intrusions. coal conveyance, and the inflow of goaf and water between the face supports have been the major operational problems experienced to date. The progressive percentage availability of the total system (moves between panels excluded) for the first three panels mined was 40 per cent. Satisfactory solutions have been evolved for these problems. and the availability in the present panel (fourth panel) has increased to approximately 60 per cent. It is envisaged that longwalling will become the most economical method of ensuring optimum heat values, greater recovery. and reduced geographic expansion. as well as safer roof conditions. at Coal brook.

Preg-robbing activity of the carbonaceous matter negatively impacts the process of precious metals recovery from gold-bearing ores and concentrates. In this paper, ore heap leaching (HL) using a blinding agent which inhibits ‘preg-robbing’ is a promising method. A carbonaceous ‘preg-robbing’ gold ore with head gold grade of 1.92 g/t from a Russian deposit was studied. Corg was 1.12%. In accordance with the Irgiredmet technique, preg-robbing activity was 65.3%. Surfactant reagent DN was used as the blinding agent. Column tests on the ore HL were conducted using two options. They were: a conventional flow sheet (Column 1) and a flow sheet with the reagent addition (Column 2). Gold recovery in Column 1 was 55.39% while gold recovery in Column 2 was 68.48%. Owing to their excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance, Pt and its alloys are being used preferentially at elevated temperatures and in aggressive environments. For example, an important application field is the glass industry. Alongside the discovery of new potential application fields, the knowledge of material properties is essential for computer simulations, design configuration, process optimization, research and development or quality assurance purposes. Due to the importance for technical applications high-temperature properties have been investigated for currently available Pt-base alloys with ongoing improvements. For the determination of tensile creep test data up to 3000°C, including precise strain measurement, special experimental equipment has been developed at the University of Applied Sciences Jena, Germany. An overview of the existing and newly obtained mechanical property data on pure Pt, solid-solution strengthened Pt-Rh alloy, oxide dispersion-hardened materials Pt DPH and Pt 10%RhDPH as well as cutting-edge results on Pt-base superalloys hardened by intermetallic precipitates will be presented and discussed. Furthermore, some important application examples for the abovementioned Pt-materials will be given.
