Copper sulfide minerals generally have high floatability, but their floatability decreases when surfaces are oxidised under some conditions. Sodium hydrosulfide, NaHS, is known both as an activator and as a depressant for copper minerals. NaHS at low concentrations activates copper oxides by sulfurising surfaces, but at high concentrations depresses copper sulfides by interfering with the adsorption of collectors. In this paper, we applied NaHS to activate oxidised chalcocite and bornite and focused on the conditions of NaHS treatments such as dosages and pH, and the effect of these conditions on the floatability of those minerals. The pure minerals treated with NaHS were analysed using zeta potential analyser and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Analyses indicated that the reactions of NaHS and the products on the mineral surfaces after the reactions (i.e. oxidation, pH change) depended on whether NaHS reacted with copper or iron, and the reactions between NaHS and iron depend on NaHS concentration and pH. Flotation tests using a small column cell were performed with a single pure mineral, and using a Denver-type flotation machine with a copper sulfide ore. The results of each flotation test were utilised to clarify the floatability. The relation between flotation behaviours and analysis results were also discussed. It is commonly accepted that the energy consumption for comminution within mineral processing is responsible for around 3% of the global electrical energy usage. However, it was clearly noted that inside mills, less than 1% of this energy efficiency is actually consumed for particle size reduction. Therefore, monitoring of grinding parameters and modelling of product particle size distribution (e.g. characterised by the 80% passing size P80) play an essential role in operating costs of a mineral processing plant. Several empirical models have been introduced for the prediction of the P80. Since in the industrial scale usually a few numbers of grinding variables are monitored, these models cannot identically be used in plants. In addition, these empirical models do not always indicate the magnitude of correlations between milling variables. This study proposes to introduce the Hilbert-Schmidt independence criterion (HSIC) as an intelligent model for exploring linear and nonlinear relationships between grinding variables and P80 for an industrial scale data assessment. HSIC can rank variables based on their importance and help to select the most effective one for the generation of predictive models. HSIC modelling through various monitored grinding variables (ball charge, feed input rate, F80, power draw and work index) of an industrial plant indicated that F80 as a feed property has the highest effect on P80 of the ball mill products. Modelling results highlighted that the P80 can be accurately predicted, based on effective variables by using a HSIC model. These outcomes showed that HSIC as a powerful modelling tool can assess the relationships between monitored grinding parameters, select the most effective grinding parameters and satisfactorily predict the P80. The corrosion properties of iron-based composite materials containing graphite and silicon carbide (SiC) reinforcement were investigated. The effects of silicon carbide reinforcement were investigated by adding 0.5% graphite and 1%, 2%, and 4% SiC. A powder metallurgy method was used to produce the composite samples. Iron, graphite, and silicon carbide powders were blended for one hour with a threeaxis mixer and then unidirectionally pressed under a pressure of 750 MPa. After pressing, the composite materials were sintered at 1100°C for one hour. The corrosion properties and microstructure, density, and hardness properties of the composite materials that can affect the corrosion properties were also investigated. It was determined that the pore ratio and hardness of the composite material increased, and corrosion resistance decreased, with increasing silicon carbide content.

The rate of dissolution of sulphide minerals is frequently interpreted in terms of the passivating behaviour of a layer of material on the surface. This interpretation has driven research to identify and possibly remove this layer from the surface, and thus yield higher rates of dissolution. The identification of such layers has proved difficult, with different researchers claiming different compositions for possible layers. An alternative framework has been pursued by the author and co-workers, who have argued that the rate of dissolution is governed by the electronic structure of the minerals which give rise to their semiconducting properties. Researchers sceptical of this approach have argued that semiconducting properties are only important in highly pure substances. In this paper, we review the electronic and semiconducting properties and discuss how they impact dissolution behaviour. These properties affect their colour and dissolution properties even though the minerals are not high purity substances. Keywords: Dissolution, leaching, passivation, semiconductor, chalcopyrite

We propose a layout design for the UG2 Reef where weak geological alteration layers are present. The collapse of the Everest platinum mine in South Africa indicated that these layers substantially weaken the pillars. The popular Hedley and Grant pillar strength formula cannot be used where these alteration layers are present. Underground investigations at Everest mine and numerical modelling of the layout were conducted using the TEXAN code and a limit equilibrium model. Simulations of a collapsed area and an intact area allowed for a preliminary calibration of the model. This was subsequently used to explore modified layouts for these ground conditions. An alternative is to compartmentalize the blocks of ore using barrier pillars. The numerical modelling predicted that the barrier pillars appear to remain stable even in the case of large-scale collapses, provided their width exceeds 25 m. Main access routes into the mine can be protected by a double row of pillars at least 15 m wide to provide a safe travelling way. As a cautionary note, these conclusions are based on the model calibration and this needs to be refined in future. Calibration of the limit equilibrium model remains a challenge owing to the large number of parameters involved.

This paper describes and sets in context the commercially proven uranium extraction processes. It also discusses some of the technologies that are currently being pursued with the aim of reducing costs and overcoming a number of technical issues that are faced by process designers and operators. In doing so, opportunities for the transfer of extraction technology from other industries/commodities are identified. The key processing areas that are examined include: ?The influence of mineralogy. The type of uranium mineralization and the nature of its association within a particular deposit will have a major impact on process route selection. Uranium minerals are classified according to their influence on extractive metallurgy. As the uranium price has risen in recent times, so opportunities are increasing for the recovery of uranium from less conventional resources such as phosphates and fossil fuels. ?The opportunities for employing techniques aimed at reducing the capital and operating costs of the overall process such as heap leach and beneficiation. Preconcentration by screening, gravity separation and radiometric sorting can potentially reduce the mass flow to the downstream leach and recovery plants. ?Purification or separation of uranium in carbonate systems. While it is possible to directly precipitate uranium from clarified leachate, the presence of impurities such as vanadium, molybdenum and others may dictate that ion exchange or selective precipitation is employed. Advances have been made in other industries in terms of improved ion exchange equipment aimed at reducing resin inventories and hence costs. ?Separation in acid leach systems. Earlier developments included the use of combined SX-IX systems (Eluex or Bufflex) and the introduction of continuous countercurrention exchange (CCIX). Column SX has found a ready application to uranium in view of the rapid extraction kinetics. With the renewed interest in uranium processing, efforts are being redirected towards further development of resin-in-pulp (RIP) as a means of driving down capital and operating costs. ?Extraction in a chloride environment. Australia and Namibia are desert countries where good quality water comes at a cost. However, both have access to saline water from either the ocean or subterranean aquifers. The issues associated with operating a uranium extraction operation in such environments is discussed. ?Extraction from less conventional sources. Recent price increases for U3O8 have resulted in a number of companies examining the recovery of uranium from sources such as fossil fuels and phosphate deposits. Both of these areas were examined in the 1970s and 1980s and a number of approaches were commercialized. The paper reviews the extraction options.

On 23rd October, 1969, 54 members of the Institute set out at an early hour from Rand Airport in two chartered Dakota aircraft for a visit to the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam site. The weather was at the start rather unpromising but after passing Bloemfontein the overcast cleared and it turned into a glorious day for a most memorable visit. The Institute is indebted to U.C-Dumez-Borie Dams Limited, the main civil engineering contractors, and Mr J. D. McNamara their executive manager, for the very excellent arrangements made for this excursion. From the time the aircraft landed till a slightly belated departure the organisation of the extensive tours arranged for the parties was quite outstanding and a matter for congratulation to all concerned. At each of the many places visited there was a senior official to give an authoritative and comprehensive description of the work under his control. In addition the guides on the buses, loaned by the Department of Water Affairs, kept up an interesting running commentary throughout the day. A further much appreciated facet was the introduction of many of the experts on the site and a brief talk by each after an excellent lunch served at the recreation club. Each visitor also received a brochure with a progress report and a detailed site plan, with various sections highlighted in colour, and obviously prepared at the cost of much time and effort. The visit included tours of the large dolerite quarry, where some 150 000 tons of rock are removed each month, the 42 in. gyratory primary crusher, the secondary crushing and screening plant, the rod mill plant for sand production, and the automated blending and concrete batching plant. The transport of mixed concrete by 'silobuses' to the 6 cu. yd buckets of four Blondin cableways, two of which are radially movable and two with buffing towers, and the placing of the concrete in the huge blocks of the wall was watched from a vantage point. The most interesting part of the visit was without a doubt the inspection of the wall itself and the explanations of the many intricasies of its design and care in construction, covering aspects such as positioning of galleys, interlocking of blocks, reinforcement, refrigeration, actual concrete placing, subsequent grouting, etc. Other points of interest were the very complicated design of the wall itself, the river diversion plans, with three stages of coffer dams, the spillways, and the very well cut penstock tunnels.

This was named by Matheron in acknowledgement of the early work of Krige's in the optimization of the evaluation of the South African gold mines. "Carboxymethyl cellulose is an organic binder used in the iron ore pelletizing industry. The basic principles of how carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) solutions behave during the pelletizing process and how these principles affect the drop and compression strengths of the pellets are poorly understood. The aim of the investigation was therefore to gain knowledge on the behaviour of CMC during the pelletizing of haematite concentrate.Haematite pellets with different additions of CMC (0.1–0.4 wt%), were subjected to drop tests, compression tests, and free moisture content analysis. The relationship between the drop strength, compression strength, free moisture content, elapsed time, and CMC concentration was analysed.The drop strength had a strong correlation with the free moisture content of the haematite pellets, with a correlation coefficient of 0.94. The compression strength of the CMC-bonded haematite pellets increased as the free moisture content decreased, reaching a maximum upon depletion of the free moisture content. Haematite pellets with CMC concentrations of 0.1 and 0.2 wt% developed most of their strength within the first day after pelletizing, whereas pellets with concentrations of 0.3 and 0.4 wt% developed most of their strength between one and two days after pelletizing. The time within which CMC-bonded haematite pellets develop most of their strength is therefore dependent on the CMC concentration. IntroductionFines are produced during the beneficiation of iron ore. These fines are separated from the lump ore and can be upgraded to produce a concentrate, which is used as a raw material for the production of pellets. Pellets in turn form a key burden material for direct reduction processes as well as the blast furnace (Zhu et al., 2015).Inorganic binders such as bentonite have been used predominantly in the iron ore pelletizing process to obtain pellets with suitable properties (Eisele and Kawatra, 2003). These binders, however, have the disadvantage of introducing impurities into the pellets. This has resulted in organic binders being pursued as suitable replacements for inorganic binders, of which carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) shows good potential. Although CMC has been used as an organic binder in iron ore pelletizing, the fundamental principles of how it behaves during pelletizing and how these impact on pellet properties are poorly understood."

Discussion H. J. S. Kriek*: During 1956 Iscor became interested in the acid smelting in a blast furnace of siliceous ores containing 15 per cent silica. This interest was as a result of the successful acid smelting in Germany at a CaO/SiO2-ratio of between 0.4 and 0.8. Acid smelting can become an economic proposition due to a reduction in slag volume accompanied by a lowering of the coke rate. Paschke and Hannel1 found that a free flowing slag (i.e. viscosities of less than two poise) would not be obtained at C/S-ratios lower than 0.82 and that the addition of 3 to 4 per cent alkalies became necessary. In titanium bearing slags it was established that maximum fluidity is obtained with 10 per cent TiO2. Acid smelting resulted in increased sulphur pickup with decreasing O/S-ratio and desulphurization with soda-ash outside the blast furnace was necessary. At Iscor Mr B. B. Segal established that, for slags with (CaO+MgO)/SiO2-ratios of 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7, the addition of alkalies and TiO2 resulted in a substantial decrease in melting point and also of viscosity. At a (CaO+ MgO)/ ratio of 0.53 the addition of 10 per cent TiO2 is as effective as the addition of 3.75 per cent alkalies. This means that a blast furnace can be run without the addition of alkalies and consequently the detrimental effect of alkalies on the lining can be avoided; also that fluid slags with 5 to 15 per cent MgO and 8 to 10 per cent Al203 can be obtained with 10 per cent TiO present. (CaO+ MgO)/SiO2-ratios smaller than 0.5 the addition of titania resulted in a decrease in melting point and also in an increase in viscosity. In ceramic crucibles the slag did not become more viscous with time but thickened appreciably when held in graphite crucibles. No titanium carbonitride could be detected and only Ti20a was found. Prof Howat also did not obtain the TiC-TiN solid solution and therefore it appears that the thickening of the slag is not solely due to the formation of the titanium carbonitrides. This is in agreement with the work of Michailov and Belyakova2 who found that TiO2 decreased the viscosity of acid slags and increased the viscosity of basic slags; that titanium sesquioxide (Ti203) and titanium monoxide (TiO) increased the viscosity of both acid and basic slags and that titanium carbide, which is found in larger amounts in basic slags than in acid slags, considerably increases the viscosity of both acid and basic slags. Patzak et al3 describes the following oxygen deficient titanias, viz Ti2O, TiO, Ti203, Ti3O5, Ti4O7, Ti5O9, Ti6O11- Ti10O9,Ti7O13,Ti8O15 and Ti9O17. Until about 1959 a fair amount of data was available on the viscosity of normal slags to which titania was added2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. At Iscor an electromagnetic viscometer based on the viscometer developed by Bockris10 was built. Progress was very slow as our main attention was centred around problems associated with the operation of the Rotor process. During 1962 and 1963 two papers containing fundamental work on the viscosities of slags in the systems CaO-SiO2-TiO211 and CaO-SiO2-TiO2 at 0 per cent A1203, 10 per cent Al203 and 20 per cent Al20312 appeared. The work of Ross and Ohno obviated the necessity of any further work by Iscor on the viscosity of blast furnace slags containing titania. Ross gave the following optimum compositions for blast furnace slags containing titania. Titania % Lime % Silica % Lime/Silica-ratio 20 30-42 38-50 0.6-1.10 30 27-36 34-43 0.63-1.06 40 24-32 28-36 0.66-1.14 The optimum temperature is 1,500°C because at this temperature the largest workable composition range exists. Higher temperatures result in narrower optimum composition ranges and in increased rates of thickening. The factors affecting the rate of thickening were also investigated by Ross and Ohno, as the main problem with slags containing titania is not finding compositions which are fluid at operating temperatures but the thickening due to a lack of oxygen. With these slags when there is insufficient oxygen to co-ordinate each silicon atom with its own individual shell of four oxygen ions, some sharing of oxygen ions must occur, resulting in the formation of large silicate ions and a rise in viscosity. The formation of oxygen deficient titania can be prevented as long as iron oxide or manganese oxide remain in the liquid slag. Iwase13 and also Viens, Camp bell and Rogers14 obtained in the experimental smelting of ilmenite ores fluid slags with more than 3 to 5 per cent manganese oxide and ferrous oxide in the slags. It appears that titaniferous ores can be smelted in blast furnaces under the following conditions: (1) Acid slag operation, i.e. at C/S-ratios from O.6-1.0. (2) Dolomite can be used as a flux as MgO is a network modifier. (3) The Al2O3-content must be less than 15 per cent as alumina promotes thickening of the slag and decreases the optimum composition range. (4) The hearth temperature must not exceed 1,500°C. SYNOPSIS The corrosion characteristics of a new steel, 14Cr, which is a modification of the well-known 3CR12, in aqueous sulphate solution were studied through polarization diagrams and a computer analysis based on the polarization¬resistance technique. It was found that the corrosion rate of 14Cr steel is independent of pH for pH values above 6, but, below a pH value of 4, the corrosion rate increases sharply with decreasing pH. In air-saturated solutions of neutral and mildly alkaline pH, the corrosion rate is approximately 60 µm per year. The 14Cr steel shows a twentyfold improvement in corrosion resistance over that of 3CR12 in sulphate solutions at pH 2,0. This is considered to be due to the beneficial effect of its higher chromium and nickel contents.

The wear of steel pipelines used for the transportation of backfill slurries is frequently regarded as an erosion problem only. An investigation was undertaken of the likely contribution to the total 'wear rate' made by corrosion. Use was made of a pipe flow loop with catholically protected specimens and corrosion inhibitors. Laboratory electrochemical tests utilizing a rotating-cylinder electrode were also conducted. The slurries used were classified tailings from two mines at a relative density of 1,7. The velocities were between 2 and 4,9 m/s. Substantial decreases in the wear rate of up to 80 per cent for one slurry and up to 67 per cent for the other were obtained with the use of corrosion control, showing that corrosion and, more importantly, interaction between erosion and corrosion, contribute a significant portion of the overall wear in steel pipelines

Mechanical alloying of an equiatomic mixture of crystalline Ti and Pt elemental powders in a high-energy ball mill formed an amorphous alloy by solid-state reactions. Mechanical alloying was carried out in an argon atmosphere at a rotation speed of 1200 r/min and a 20:1 ball-to-powder weight ratio, for time intervals of 4 to 40 hours. At an intermediate stage of mechanical alloying, scanning electron microscopy showed the formation of characteristic layered structures of inhomogeneous composition within the powder particles. X-ray diffraction analysis showed the gradual disappearance of crystalline Bragg peaks and the emergence of broad amorphous maxima as milling progressed. The amorphization process was completed after 8?12 hours. The amorphous state of the product indicated that temperatures during processing did not exceed the crystallization temperature of the alloy.

A three-day symposium on the production of clean steel organized by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was held in September 1995 at Vanderbijlpark. It was attended by 151 delegates, who represented the whole of the steel industry in South Africa: Iscor Works, Saldanha Steel, Columbus Stainless, Highveld Steel & Vanadium, Iscor Research & Development, University of Pretoria, and Technikon Witwatersrand, as well as the users of steel products were represented. Professor Allan Cramb held the delegates attention with well-presented research and practical information. He obtained excellent interaction with the delegates by responding in depth to the questions put to him during the Symposium. In summary, he emphasized the following aspects of the elimination of defects during the processing of steel in continuously cast materials.

Carbonatites are generally competent rock masses with rock mass rating class II rating 60–74. In spite of their competency, they tend to be affected by weak features like manganese-iron veins and/or in situ rock damage due to brecciation associated with carbonatite complexes. Rock slope failure in such hard rocks is complex since such structures within the rock mass form weak links that could potentially control slope instability. In this contribution, a numerical simulation using phase2 v 7.0 was carried out to investigate the influence of in situ rock damage on the stability of mine pit walls. The outcome reveals that, the existence of breccia in the competent rock mass has the capability to reduce the slope stability performance particularly at gentle dipping angles of emplacement in close range to the slope toe. However, as the emplacement position of breccia moves away from the pit wall, the stability performance increases at gentle dipping angle <50º. On the contrary, at the dipping angle of 50° the performance of slope reduced, and at steeper angles >50° the impact becomes negligible. Thus, from a series of analyses, mine design in brecciated rock masses, the ratio of 1:5 between the breccia distance from slope toe and pit depth should be implemented to counter its impact, and if the breccia is within or close to the pit limit, a deliberate effort must be made to mine it out.

The South African mining industry is at present planning to extract orebodies at depths of up to 4 km. To do this cost effectively and, at the same time, ensure safe working conditions for mining, the personnel will require both the development of new strategies and the implementation of current rock-engineering technological developments on a wide scale. This paper covers most of the technological developments likely to be required for mining at very high stresses, but it is clear that improved regional support systems will need to be developed to ensure defective stability of the rockmass during mining operations. Members are advised that the Council has decided to change the format of the Journal from the present size to the standard international A4 size with effect from August, 1969. By making this change we will be conforming to more general practice today in regard to publications and this should effect certain economies and facilitate selling of advertising space. It has been arranged that in future the publication of the Journal, including advertisement sales, will be handled by Kelvin Publications (Pty.) Ltd. who are already doing this work satisfactorily for the Mechanical and Electrical Institutes. While making these changes, the opportunity is taken of redesigning the outer cover of the Journal to incorporate the new coat of arms. The Council trusts that these changes will meet with the approval of members.

The leaching of chalcopyrite in ferric sulfate media is notorious for its slow and inhibited kinetics. Different methods have been proposed to improve the kinetics, including the use of organic compounds as additives to the leaching media. In this study, the enhancing effect of methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, and 2-propanol on the leaching of chalcopyrite in aerated acid ferric sulfate solutions using different reactor systems was investigated. The results revealed a clear improvement of copper dissolution by methanol and 1-propanol relative to tests with no additives under similar conditions. Operating a continuous-flow mini-column reactor yields surprisingly good results, potentially related to the maintaining of a consistent leaching micro-environment on the mineral surface. Scanning electron microscopy studies showed that the alcohols result in the removal of surface deposits formed during the anodic dissolution, potentially thus facilitating improved cathodic reduction of the ferric ion to drive the anodic dissolution.

A maximum of ten process streams (Merrill barren solutions) can be monitored sequentially with this on-line analyser, and gold concentrations as Iow as 0,005 mg/I can be determined. The design is a further development of the Tell-tale analyser constructed by the Corner House Laboratories during the period 1965-69. The barren solution is preconcentrated automatically by solvent extraction, the solvent being a solution of I per cent Aliquat 336 in di-isobutyl ketone. An aqueous-to-solvent ratio of 40: I is maintained. The extracted gold in the organic phase is determined by flame atomic absorption, each analysis taking approximately II minutes. The long-term reproducibility of the absorbance readings over a 24-hour period of repetitive sampling of four simulated process streams varied from 6,9 to 4,1 per cent relative standard deviation for gold concentrations of 0,0 I to 0,05 mg/I.
