In recent years attempts have been made to develop software packages for shallow seismic refraction data analysis. In most cases, mainframe computers were used which were generally non-interactive, did not support graphics and were unfriendly to operate. With these facts in mind, a user-friendly interactive processing package written in PASCAL has been developed for the IBM PC. The package allows the following operations to be performed. (1) data tying, equalisation of reciprocal and common shot times; (2) overburden velocity analysis; (3) refraction leg identification on time-distance plots; (4) elevation correction of refractor data; (5) forward and backward phantoming; refraction leg extrapolation; (6) 'bedrock' velocity analysis; (7) 'time-depth' plot computation; (8) depth calculation. Numbers (6) - (8) above involve Palmer's generalised reciprocal technique of refraction data interpretation. The program is extremely flexible and makes much use of interactive high resolution graphics and 'popup' onscreen menus. The velocity analysis sections have statistical routines built in to provide error estimation. The programs allow data interpretation to take place in the field with a portable microcomputer while the data are still being collected; this is obviously not possible with any cumbersome mainframe-based software. Hence it becomes possible to see the effects of varying the data collection parameters (such as geophone spacing) upon the resulting interpretation and so enable adjustments to be made where necessary. Hard copies of the data may be obtained at all stages of the interpretation process using a small (A3) plotter, or the graphics may be dumped to a dot- matrix printer if a suitable plotter is not available.

Discrete element methods (DEM) have provided the ability to resolve the complex phenomena experienced by ore within comminution devices such as tumbling mills. The new developments in DEM techniques and the corresponding increase in computational power have made it more feasible to study the movement of individual ore particles as they traverse a tumbling mill. A range of information can be extracted on individual particle impact histories, such as kinetic energy at the time of collision, velocities of individual particles, per-particle stress tensors, impulse, and collision energy. DEM codes have been modified to provide required information that can be analysed in associated software to investigate the impact of varied operational parameters on the resultant granular dynamics. This paper explores the reaction of individual ore particles to the breakage environment within a tumbling mill using DEM techniques and studies the stressing conditions that would lead to either impact or abrasive breakage. The Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers (FSPE) recently conducted a survey of professional engineering manpower in South Africa. This article presents the data relevant to mining and metallurgical engineering. FSPE in their survey attempted to determine the supply of engineers in South Africa both from local universities and by immigration. The immigrants gave some problems in that it is difficult to know whether a man who claims to be professionally qualified really is. However, it was estimated that the ratio of immigrants who claimed to be qualified to those who really are the equivalent of our local graduates was between 1,0 and 1,9 for mining engineers, and between 2,0 and 4,1 for metallurgical engineers.

The water separation pump is a highly effective alternative for medium pressure (1.6?6.4 MPa) slurry pumping requirements and has been widely used in industry since it was invented in the 1980s. The water separation pump is powered by a single or multi-stage clean water centrifugal pump. The water separation pump combines the advantage of high flow centrifugal pumps with the high pressure capability of reciprocating pumps. The clean water pressure is exchanged to slurry kinetic energy through the separating chamber, the principle component of the water diaphragm pump. Currently in its the third generation, the separation chamber uses a ball and flexible water seat that provides a true separation mechanism and can completely isolate the two fluids with near zero water loss.

Conditional bias occurs when the expected value of the true grade conditional on the estimated grade is not equal to the estimated grade. It is a quantification of how the average of estimates differs from the true value. Conditional bias is present in all resource estimates due to the unavoidable properties of kriging, and indeed all linear estimation (regression) methods. In a mining resource estimation context, the degree of conditional bias is dependent on the spacing of the conditioning data; more data leads to the expectation of less conditional bias This paper discusses conditional bias from two perspectives: 1. 2. Estimates seeking to eliminate, as much as possible, conditional bias; and Estimates that accept a larger amount of conditional bias in resource models, in order to achieve a specific outcome. The problem of conditional bias in estimation can only be fully appreciated if the objective or purpose of a resource model is understood. There are instances where conditional bias should be avoided because it is not reasonable to make decisions using estimates that are known to be wrong in expected value; for example, when making a final decision in grade control with respect to the destination of the material. In most instances in the mining resource estimation context, however, the estimated values will not be “final estimates”, but “interim estimates”, meaning that in the future more data will be obtained, and the ”interim estimate” will then be updated. In this context, the most useful resource model is an interim model that is able to predict the final model estimates, despite not having all the data available that will be collected in the future. This is the objective, for example, of a recoverable “long-term” model developed prior to operating a mine, for example at the feasibility stage. It attempts to predict the ore that a processing plant will receive, well into the future. In such cases, it can be unequivocally demonstrated that conditional bias is not only unavoidable, it is a necessity.

In order to meet the stringent specifications associated with the production of LME Grade A cobalt cathode, producers need to ensure that a number of impurities, including Cd, are removed from the advance electrolyte to ppb levels (~0.1 mg/L). Conventional options include ion exchange using amino methyl phosphonic acid resin and solvent extraction using D2EHPA. More recently a Cd-selective resin, employing Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT), became available from IBC Technologies, Inc. These three potential unit operations were evaluated in parallel at Mintek. MRT was identified as the most technically feasible option. Results obtained on a cobalt advance electrolyte, containing 55 g/L Co, 6 mg/L Cd and 60 g/L Na2SO4, are presented in this paper.

"This paper provides guidelines on performing mass and energy balance modelling involving coal and coal derivatives. Usually, the inputs to a pyrometallurgical process would be specified in terms of elements and compounds. Reliable thermochemical data is more widely available for species involving uniquely defined, relatively smaller molecules. However, in the case of coal, the molecules are extremely large and not uniquely defined. Consequently, modelling processes involving coal and its derivatives have several potential pitfalls. These are outlined in the present paper. The main findings are as follows:•,Coal proximate analysis should not be regarded as absolute; it could vary with several parameters, including heating rate •,For modelling, the use of ultimate analyses should be considered a preferable option to proximate analyses, where, ‘fixed carbon’ and ‘volatiles’ are not defined in terms of chemical composition •,Significant errors could be made if the larger molecules are neglected during calculation of the calorific value (CV) of coal gas (the gas liberated when coal is heated in the absence of oxygen) •,For elemental analyses, the oxygen content (which is calculated by balance) should be checked to ensure it is within the expected range •,For representation of sulphur in coal, double-counting due to SO3 in the ash analysis should be avoided •,Potentially, oxygen in coal could be represented as O2, H2O, CO, or CO2; however, use of some of these species without considering the experimentally determined gross CV results in significant errors in the energy balance. If coal enthalpy is calculated from elemental analyses without correction, representation of coal oxygen as H2O(l) gives reasonable accuracy (up to 6.9% error for a set of South African coals). Coal volatiles could be represented by a complex mixture of compounds, even using different oxygen-containing species than the abovementioned four, provided the enthalpy is corrected •,It is recommended that an ‘enthalpy correction value’ is incorporated in energy balances involving combustion, devolatilization, or conversion of coal and coal derivatives, e.g. coke, char, or tar. That would imply that proximate analysis, elemental analysis, as well as the gross CV would be required for all solid or liquid coal-derived substances being modelled. No other correction due to the form of carbon being different than graphite should be used, as that would imply doublecounting some effects."

This paper describes briefly a computerised model of the South African electricity system which has been developed jointly by the Atomic Energy Board and the Electricity Supply Commission. The results of an analysis of this system have been subjected to a fairly extensive sensitivity analysis which reveals that up to the year 1990 between 680 and 700 million tons of coal will be required for electric power generation, together with between 7 000 and 10 000 tons of uranium. This result is fairly insensitive to data variations, but the prediction of a cumulative requirement up to the year 2000, of between 1 300 and 1 800 million tons of coal and 25000 to 70000 tons of uranium, proves to be very data-sensitive.

This report describes the investigational work on the development of a fire-assay method capable of concentrating, in a button of nickel sulphide, all six of the platinum-group metals present in samples of ores, concentrates, and mattes. In the method adopted, the sample is fused with a mixture of sodium carbonate, sodium tetraborate, nickel carbonate, and sulphur. The nickel sulphide formed during fusion collects the noble metals and carries them to the bottom of the crucible. The nickel sulphide button is dissolved, and the noble metals are isolated and determined. The coefficients of variation range between 1,0 and 4,9 per cent for the various platinum-group metals when they are present in concentrations between 0,3 and 75 p.p.m.

High-temperature phase relations and thermodynamics of the condensed phase region of the Pb-S-O system at 1473 K were analysed by use of the available information. The sub-regular solution models on Pb-PbS and PbO-PbSO4 continuous melts were used in conjunction to generate a consistent set of thermodynamic and phase equilibrium conditions for the Pb-S-O system. The directions and distributions of conjugation lines between melts of this system were derived with relevant activity and composition data. The calculations permitted the thermodynamic analysis of direct lead smelting and the construction of isothermal reaction diagrams for the system in terms of oxygen and sulphur partial pressures at 1473 K.

The AMIRA Code of Practice and Guidelines for Metal Accounting was developed in response to demand from a number of sponsor companies, including one major platinum producer. Since its publication in 2007, the Code has become widely accepted in the mining industry world-wide as a guide for best practice in metal accounting. With the changes in the structure of the platinum mining industry in South Africa over the last 10 ? 15 years, in particular, the starting up of a number of small platinum producers who must have their concentrate smelted and the contained valuable metals refined by third parties, the need for metal accounting systems that are accurate and have an acceptable level of precision has become even more critical to the success of a platinum-producing operation. The current state of metal accounting in the industry is discussed and possible areas for improved accounting and associated metallurgical efficiencies are identified.

The paper proposes a new method for selective calciferous separation. The effect was achieved through the application of the combination of high-power electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP) and a specific reagent regime of the flotation. The combined application of HPEMP with the special reagent regime allowed for the improvement of the scheelite floatability: the recovery of CaWO4 rises from 41.2 % (untreated sample) to 58.5 (sample treated at 103 pulses). In contrast, the floatability of calcite decreases significantly: the recovery of calcite drops from 74.7% (untreated sample) to 41.1 % (sample treated at 103 pulses). A colloquium on solid-liquid separation was held by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy on 23rd September, 1982, at the State Pavilion Auditorium, Milner Park, Johannesburg, to co-incide with the Electra Mining Exhibition. It was attended by about 150 delegates. Eight papers were presented covering: Geostatistics The School of Earth Sciences of Stanford University, the Centre de Geostatistique ofthe Paris School of Mines, and the Department de Genie Mineral of the Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal are cosponsoring the organization of a 2nd NATO ASI (North Atlantic Treaty Organization Advanced Study Institute), under the name of 'GEOSTAT TAHOE 1983', to be held at South Lake Tahoe, California, on 4th to 17th September, 1983.

The extent of ground movements and stress concentrations in the vicinity of the reef in the deep mine-shafts used in the South 4frican gold-mining industry have led to the requirement that special tower structures be developed to span the reef intersection zone in several new shafts. So that structural engineers are able to design these towers, it is necessary to model the dynamic behavior of conveyances traversing them in some way, to provide a means to determine the magnitude of the forces generated. This paper describes the development of two such procedures. The first is a numerical method, utilizing a step by- step integration technique to track the motion of a conveyance through a tower. This technique has been implemented in a computer program, and some results are given.

Kaolin is one of the most important ingredients in porcelain manufacturing. Its main phase is clay mineral containing aluminum hydrosilicate, namely kaolinite. Beside kaolinite it also contains quartz, illite and feldspars, which impair its applicability. Kaolin is a non-reactive material, but metakaolin can be produced by heat treatment (calcination) of kaolin, which is also used by the cement and concrete industry due to its latent hydraulic (pozzolanic) properties. Beside thermal activation, reactive materials can also be produced by mechanochemical activation in general. This paper deals with the mechanochemical activation of kaolin. The raw material was classified into various size fractions, then ground in a batch stirred media mill under varying circumstances (residence time, circumferential velocity). After grinding, the structural changes of the products were investigated by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). In addition, the particle size distribution of the ground material was determined by laser scattering. As a result of the grinding experiments and analytical measurements of the products, it can be clearly seen that reactivity of kaolin can be improved significantly by mechanical activation in a stirred media mill, but due to its high energy density the circumstances were optimised carefully to avoid aggregation. As an alternative to the conventional flotation method, there has been continual research in an effort to enhance base metal ores and combustibles recovery using ultrasonics. These studies however were largely limited to the pre-treatment of ores for the removal of surface contaminants while the effect of ultrasonics on the bubble and pulp-phase interactions remained somewhat unexplored. Noting this deficiency, this study aimed to investigate the mechanistic effect of an ultrasonic field in an impeller less flotation cell specifically focusing on the bubble-particle interaction dynamics. A lab-scale flotation cell (capacity 1 litre) was designed, involving a vertically oriented ultrasonic probe (20 kHz, rated at 1.2 kW) and operated in the output power range from 1 to 20% with continuous liquid recirculation. Particle suspension was achieved by the combined action of recirculation and ultrasonic pulses. Interactions of coarse size glass ballotini particles (D32 = 314 μm) with bubbles (< 1 mm diameter) in the presence of a surfactant were studied, using high-speed imaging. Application of an ultrasonic pulse in the aqueous medium resulted in the generation of numerous microbubbles which increased with increasing input power and duration of the ultrasonic pulse time. Such periodic pulses introduced at a high level of turbulence in the pulp phase facilitated adequate bubble-particle contacts. Microbubbles played a key role in forming particle clusters which were observed to be floatable even in the absence of any carrier bubbles. When carrier bubbles were introduced, some of these particle clusters attached to the bubble surface and conveniently floated. It was noted that a favourable state of bubble-particle interaction was achievable to produce stable bubble-particles aggregates by suitably controlling the input power and period of the applied ultrasonic pulse.
