Increased employment and a lower accident-frequency rate were the outstanding features of the metal- and nonmetal-mining4 industries of the United States in 1939 compared with 1933, according to reports furnished by individual mining companies to the Bureau of Vines, United States Department of the Interior. Except for 1937, the reports for 1939 showed gains both in number of employees and number of mar -hours worked over all years since 1929. The accident-frequency rate per million man-hours of exposure to mining hazards was lower than in any year since 1925. Reports for 1939 revealed a total of 111,909 men employed in and about mines, an increase of inure than 8 percent over 1931 The total volume of labor performed at all mires was slightly more than 299 million plan-hours, an increase of mare than 10 percent over 1938. As these gains suggest, the average employee had a longer period of work in 1939, the increase amounting to r workdays per employee.

The successful development of a titanium prototype of the 81-mm. mortar base plate for the Army Ordnance Corps is outlined in this report. Information is presented dealing with forming, forging, and machining, welding and assembly techniques, and design changes relative to this prototype. INTRODUCTION The work of the Federal Bureau of Mines in making ductile titanium available2/ has resulted in the establishment of a new industry. Owing to its strategic importance and the combination of low density and high strength, titanium has received considerable attention as a structural metal. Titanium's favorable strength-to-weight ratio is of particular importance to the Army Ordnance for equipment that is transported by airplane or by foot soldiers.

"PURPOSE OF REPORTThe purpose of this report, which is the third of a. series on the coal mines of the Western States, is to give the findings of a study of the causes and methods of prevention of accidents from falls of root and coal in the mines of Lincoln County, Wyo. The three mines covered in this report, referred to as A. B. and C, account- for 9 per cent of the coal production in the county and nearly 9 per cent of the State's total production. For comparative purposes some statistical data are presented bearing upon the relation of injuries to their causes, to tonnage produced, to men employed, to days worked, and to days lost as the result of injuries.FATALITIES IN WYOMINGTo show the necessity for this study, Table 1 given the fatalities that occurred during 1928 in the bituminous—coal mines of the United States, of the State of Wyoming of Lincoln County, and in Mines A, B, and C, followed by a brief description of the Kemmerer coal dis-trict, its coal beds and immediate roof, thickness of cover, dip of coal beds, methods of mining timbering for roof support, roof testing, and supervision. As part of the research effort on investigating the effects of microwave energy on the chemical and physical properties of minerals and ores, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Tuscaloosa Research Center has conducted research to measure the dielectric properties of these materials. The objective was to establish a reliable database for use in predicting the effects of microwave heating on a wide range of minerals. The dielectric constants and loss factors of minerals, commonly referred to as the dielectric properties, were determined utilizing the theory of microwave propagation through an open-ended, air-filled coaxial line that was terminated at its open end with the particular mineral under investigation. In this phase of microwave research, the USBM measured the dielectric properties of powdered minerals with medium to high electrical conductivities in the frequency range of 300 MHz to 3 GHz and as a function of temperature from 25 to 325 °C. Since the minerals were prepared as powders, techniques were used to relate the measured dielectric properties of the powdered minerals to the dielectric properties of the mineral at its theoretical or natural density.

"INTRODUCTION When nations throughout the world are pitted against each other in a war in which petroleum plays a major role, scientist and engineers of the petroleum industry must give serious thought to ways and means for recover¬ing greater percentages of oil from natural reservoirs than in the past. Petroleum and its products are vital to highly mechanized modern warfare, and the victorious nations will be those whose armies, navies, and air forces are supplied with adequate fuel oil, gasoline, and lubricants until the war is won.Efficient recovery of oil from underground reservoirs depends on many interrelated techniques; evaluation of the producing performance of wells upon the basis of their productivity indexes is one such tool. Oil wells usually yield oil at a maximum rate when first ""brought in"". The rate of production begins to decline soon after the first oil is delivered to the tanks, and although part of the decline usually can be attributed to natural reduction of reservoir pressure as oil and as are withdrawn from the reservoir, a larger proportion frequently is caused by greater saturation of water and as in the producing formation about wells and clogging of the pores of the sands by silt, organic salt, and insoluble hydrocarbons. If the maximum quantity of oil is to be recovered from reservoir sands and rocks by wells, it is then imperative that the ability of wells to produce oil be watched closely and all adverse influences that affect the case with which oil can flow to wells be corrected if possible."

The utilization of large diameter drilled holes for mine shafts seems to have had its beginning in Europe about 1850 (28) where the mining industries of Germany and The Netherlands first used drilled shafts. Recent shafts in softer formations of diameters as large as 25 feet and as deep as 1, 700 feet have been drilled in both The Netherlands and Germany. The first shaft drillers utilized cable tool or churn drilling techniques which limit both hole diameters and drilling speeds. Though some churn drilling of shafts is still performed, rotary drilling has been the dominant technique for many years.

About a century ago Bunsen and his associates invented the famous burner that bears his name and was to become the ancestor of today's gas appliances. Over the years, Bunsen's invention became the starting point of a highly developed, practical technology that culminated in the gas industry as we now know it. However, it did not occur to the early workers to investigate the scientific potentialities of the new device, and as a result the science of gas-burner performance did not keep pace with the growing industry. It was with the objective of closing the rapidly widening gap between science and technology that the present research was undertaken Its immediate purpose was to provide basic information on the combustion characteristics of .fuel gases, in particular as they affect flashback, blowoff, and yellow tipping. Information obtained in the present research and contained within this report consists of the following: (1) Fundamental flashback and blowoff characteristics have been determined, it is believed, for all fuel-gas mixtures in which the gas industry may be interested. These are critical boundary velocity gradients for flames in free air, on burners with ports at room temperature and pressure. Burner aeration is characterized by the parameter, fraction of stoichiometric. These basic limits are explained, values are presented, and calculation procedure is given for deriving corresponding values of port loading and percent primary air (chs. I and II).

A research program to evaluate the use of ceramic die inserts for ferrous diecasting was initiated by the Bureau of Mines at its Tuscaloosa Research Center. Data were compiled from the literature to characterize selected ceramic materials with respect to thermal properties, thermal-shock resistance factors, chemical reactions with molten metals, and processes required to form die components. With this information and a computer model developed for predicting temperature and stress patterns induced in ceramic materials during simulated ferrous diecasting operations, 27 candidate materials were evaluated. After evaluation, only 15 were considered for testing in an apparatus constructed to immerse the ceramic specimens in molten cast iron. Of these, 13 were tested in a modified testing unit in which cast iron was poured onto the specimens. These tests resulted in the selection of three materials for further testing: boron carbonitride (50 pct B4C:5O pct BN), boron nitride-grade M (BN-M, 40 pct BN, 60 pct Si02), and pyrolytic boron nitride (PBN). Tests in a gravity-flow die unit showed that PBN was thermal-shock resistant and could be used in diecasting of ferrous metals.

Accident rates continue to show that underground mining jobs areamong the most hazardous occupations in the United States and roof bolter operators continue to have one of the highest accident incident rates (MSHA, 1991) despite efforts by labor, government, and industry to reduce and eliminate work-related hazards. In the last two decades we have seen technical innovations such as the ATRS, and there has been an increased emphasis on hazard awareness through programs such as MSHA's REAP, but bolter operators continue to be injured and killed. Researchers at West Virginia University examined risk in the roof bolter's job and developed new approaches to accident and injury prevention. The study concentrated on the workers' job performance, machinery and the work environment to identify miner's risk and hazard exposure while bolting.

"In a previous paper the Bureau of Mines. 3/ presented in condensed tabular form all analyses of Texas crude oils made by the Bureau up to March 193K. This previous report states;The first Al well in Texas was drilled near Oil Springs, Nacogdoches County, in 1863-67. However, the first oil field of major importance in the State was discovered at Corsicana,Navarro County, in 1895. Since that time the petroleum industry try in the State has spread and grown until today petroleum from Texas is an important commodity in world petroleum markets.Since March 1939 samples of Texas crude oils from many new fields, and some older fields not covered in the previous report, nave been analyzed. Those analyses arc reported in the present paper. The annual production by years from 1896 to 1940, inclusive, taken from the figures in the Bureau of Mines Minerals Yearbook, are given in table 1. Petroleum technologists and progressive operators constantly are striving to increase the percentage of oil that may to recovered from reservoir rocks through wells. The exhaustive studies that have been made of the function of natural as in the production of oil, for example, have aided operators greatly in increasing the quantity of oil recovered from reservoirs. Natural gas dissolved in and otherwise associated under pressure with oil in reservoir rocks, however, is not the only source of energy available for moving oil through sands to wells. In becoming "reservoir—energy conscious" engineers have learned that in many petroleum reservoirs the edgewater flanking the oil accumulation constitutes a potential source of energy capable, through proper control, of increasing oil—recovery efficiencies materially. No longer is the encroachment of water into the oil— and gas—filled tart of the reservoir considered as an evil to be combatted by devious methods but rather a natural consequence, incident to the withdrawal of nil and as from the wells, that may be used advantageously in lengthening the flowing life of wells and increasing the economic recovery of oil and gas.

The final 26 tables of this chapter, tables 24-49, extend and expand the statistical series on production that was started in the 1963 edition of the Area Reports: International volume of the Minerals Yearbook and that was subsequently updated and expanded in the 1965 and 1967-90 editions. Mainly because of the separation of the countries that formed the U.S.S.R., the column that provided a 5-year average, was deleted. The listing order of major producers, however, continued to be, as in past years, in descending order of rank in the year of review, 1992. This group of tables now includes each of the top 19 crude minerals in 1983 in terms of value of their output plus 3 others of lesser rank. These 22 crude mineral commodities accounted for more than 98 % of the estimated value of world crude mineral production in 1983. Coal production, included in the 1983 value of production table as two separated entries, is combined in one table in this chapter. World output of five key downstream products-aluminum, steel, cement, nitrogen in ammonia, and refined oil-is included because of their significance as products.

This bulletin, which discusses open-cut mining at the metal mines of the United States, is the last of a series of such papers by the Bureau of Mines describing the principal methods of mining.4 Open-cut mining is applicable to flat-lying mineral deposits relatively near the surface. Vein deposits seldom are amenable to this method, although outcrops of veins sometimes are worked as open pits. Most of the iron ore of the country is mined from open pits; according to the Minerals Yearbook, 67.4 percent was mined from open pits and 32.6 percent from underground mines in 1937. Open-cut mining is relatively new in the copper industry but yields more copper than any other method; in 1937 about 52 percent of the copper ore mined in the United States was taken from open pits. Lead-zinc ore has been produced from open pits in the Joplin (Mo.) district, but most of the deposits in this area, although flat-lying, are too deep to be mined economically by the open-cut method. In 1937 one company at Oronogo, Mo., was stripping overburden and mining mixed oxidized and sulfide ores by this method.

It is unlikely, as In the past, improvement in truck efficiency and capacity can fully offset the effects of inflation, fuel costs/shortages and ever increasing haul distances. There-fore, investigations of haulage systems less sensitive to these problems are warranted. Thus, this U.S.B.M. contract research study on alternative continuous haulage systems was prepared. This study identifies the physical, economic and technological parameters in the application of continuous haulage systems with special attention to under pit slope conveyors and skip hoisting systems. The evaluation data was gathered from extensive literature searches. European/North American mine visits, and industry comments. The study concludes that continuous underground haulage is a viable method within the proper geometric configuration.

This report, sponsored by the Bureau of Mines, presents the results of an examination of the safety of the Blind Shaft Borer (BSB) shaft sinking system and an alternative modified BSB design concept in comparison to conventional shaft sinking technology. Detailed study of the two systems was also performed to identify and recommend design changes for optimum safety conditions. A comparison of the BSB systems with conventional shaft sinking was made on the basis of relative risk levels. Risk incorporates both the frequency and the potential consequence of accidents. A safety evaluation of the component operations of the two BSB systems was performed using a Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) methodology. The results of this analysis show generally that both BSB systems are safer than conventional shaft sinking. The potential risk of conventional shaft Sinking operations could be reduced by over 30%, on the average with the use of the original BSB system, and by an average of about 10% with the modified BSB. Design change recommendations to further improve the safety of these systems include a better fire suppression system, improved man haulage systems and more compact hydraulics. An operational safety manual was also developed for the modified BSB system.
