1994 estimates for Porgera are probable and proven reserves of 58 200 000 t of ore grading 5 g/t Au. Gold mineralisation is related to an intrusive complex emplaced at shallow levels in poorly consolidated sedimentary rocks. The complex is located in a zone of fold-and-thrust deformation, whose formation may have been initiated shortly before emplacement and continues locally today. Abundant primary magnetite in the complex gives an intense, 5 km wide aeromagnetic anomaly. The deposit formed during two main stages of mineralisation, the first related to early magmatic-hydrothermal activity and the second representing later epithermal overprinting centred on the Roamane fault. Hydrothermal alteration followed closely on emplacement indicating a close genetic relationship between magmatism and mineralisation. Both stages of hydrothermal activity post-date and overprint early propylitic alteration. Several factors have acted in unison or sequentially to concentrate metals at the deposit, including an extensional or trans-tensional tectonic setting within an arc or collisional environment, the exsolution of a magmatic hydrothermal fluid prior to sulphur saturation in the melt, the development of the hydrothermal system into one favourable for transporting gold, the action of late-stage faulting in focusing epithermal fluid flow, and the role of dissolved gases in promoting fluid phase separation and high-grade ore deposition

The paper investigates the historical information relating to spontaneous heatings which have occurred within the area from 1955 to date. From this information the seams most liable are identified and the location within the workings is enumerated, together with the possible reason for the occurrence of the heatings. Details are given of the precautions taken during development, working and withdrawal. Sampling procedures are outlined and the interpretation of the results is discussed. Reference is made to the various types of material and techniques employed in both preventing and combating heatings and examples are given of their relative cost and the operational experience obtained. Special observations are made on the changes in mining techniques and their influence on spontaneous combustion.

Sylvite at Boulby is mined 1 140 m beneath the sea and the mine suffers from the influx of water. This is of two kinds: persistent flows originating in the Sherwood Sandstone aquifer and entering the evaporite sequence through fractures in the intervening mudstone, and impersistent flows which are transient in nature and of uncertain origin. Water from the overlying sandstone has become enriched with NaCl and large amounts of KCl and some Mg and Br have been added by interaction with the evaporites. Waters from the transient flows are isotopically distinct from those in the Sherwood Sandstone, being enriched in H and O. They are also saturated with respect to halite and sylvite, but have higher K/Na than the persistent flows and are much more enriched in Mg and Br

The test facility at the Delft University of Technology, in the Netherlands, was characterised. Advantages include the possibility of separating particles with high but different densities up to 9 g/cm3, the ease of adjustment to any required separation density and the absence of moving parts. Simultaneous separation of more than two types of particles is possible and the magnetic fluid is safe and convenient to use compared with other heavy liquids. Disadvantages include loss of magnetic fluid with outgoing particles (cost approx US $10/l) and degeneration of fluid due to bacterial activity, reaction with particles and with surroundings. Only non-magnetic materials can be separated, there is limited potential for scaling up and high investment is required on account of the cost of magnets. Future improvements in the design of the apparatus and the properties of the magnetic fluids can only enhance its attractiveness for commercial applications

Studies have been made of interfacial turbulence occurring in reactions in which indium, zinc and cadmium, dissolved in amalgams, are oxidised into aqueous phases by ferric or mercurous ions. It has been found that this turbulence occurs when the concentrations of oxidising ions in the aqueous phase become sufficiently great. These concentrations are the same as those at which the mass-transfer coefficients in the aqueous phase increase sharply when both phases are stirred by gas bubbles rising through them. The effects of gas flow rate on the mass-transfer coefficients for zinc in mercury have been established, and the oxidation of pure mercury has been investigated. Bi was electrorefined from alloys containing 10-90 wt% Pb, together with Cu and Ag as minor impurities, in a basic cell and in a recessed-channel cell with 27.5:72.5 NaCl-PbCl electrolyte at 450-470 degrees C and 10 000-20 000 A/m2. The voltage in the basic cell was as high as 9 V, with some carryover of Bi to the cathode observed, whereas in the recessed-channel cell it was as low as 285-635 mV. Flow patterns observed in a room-temperature model indicated that the recesses provide both static liquid hold-up and good mixing of the alloy, enhancing cell performance in combination with the reduced anode-cathode distance of 0.90 mm. The purity of the resulting anode product is as high as 99.9%

Mineral exploration carried out in Ireland since the mid-1950s has resulted in the discovery of ore deposits that are now in production atTynagh (Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag), Silvermines (Zn-Pb) and nearby Ballynoe (barite), and Gortdrum (Cu-Ag-Hg); a major Zn-Pb deposit at Navan that is now being drilled prior to development; potentially productive deposits at Keel (Zn-Cd-Pb), Ballinalack (Zn-Pb) and Aherlow (Cu-Ag); and a number of interesting prospects, including one of spodumene. Underground exploration of a formerly extensively mined copper deposit at Allihies has outlined new, albeit currently uneconomic, reserves at depth. The copper and pyrite deposits at Avoca have in recent years been re-explored and are now again being worked. Most Irish ore deposits are in the lower half of the Lower Carboniferous succession of limestones and subordinate shales and sandstones, and this stratigraphic zone is being most intensively explored at present. Other geological units under active exploration are Ordovician sediments-volcanics belts, Caledonian granites, and parts of the Old Red Sandstone and Dalradian series. Surface prospecting is made difficult in many places by glacial and other superficial deposits, including peat and alluvium. Geochemical prospecting methods have been outstandingly successful and primarily responsible for most new discoveries. Boulder hunting and outcrop prospecting have proved effective in detailed investigations of geochemically anomalous areas. Some parts of the country have been covered by three separate airborne geophysical surveys, albeit without success so far. The induced polarisation technique, the most widely used ground geophysical method, has contributed to several discoveries. The scope of application of electromagnetic surveys is more restricted than that of induced polarisation, but the method has been effective in a few cases and has contributed to the Tynagh discovery. To date, the resistivity and self-potential methods have found little application. Magnetic surveys are not applicable directly in the search for ore deposits of the various known types, but can be helpful in outlining geological structures in some areas. The gravity method has been used successfully in a survey over the Zn—Pb deposit at Navan ; it has also proved effective in trials over a blind sulphide deposit at Tynagh that cannot be detected with geoelectrical methods. Non-contact systems for measuring underground voids have used theodolites, reflective or non-reflective laser methods and sonar techniques. An effective but cheaper alternative is based on use of a Wild T1000 electronic theodolite coupled to a Leica Data DISTO and a Wild GRE3 data logger. The software used to process the theodolite data is a spreadsheet and macro combination, while Surpac, Datamine and AutoCAD modelling packages have been investigated for viewing the tunnel profiles. The main limitations were found to be blinding, when irregularities in the stope obstructed the line of sight, and the 30 m range of the Data DISTO model used in the study, although more powerful models are available. All three modelling packages proved suitable, with Surpac providing the best-quality printed images of the voids surveyed and AutoCad by far the cheapest alternative

"The Archaean komatiite-associated nickel sulphide deposits at Kambalda, Western Australia, exhibit a number of stratigraphic features that are indicative of a strong volcanic control on ore localization, including (1) a restriction to specific basal cumulate metakomatiite host units, (2) confinement within distinctive synvolcanic embayments in the footwall and (3) variations in the internal structure and composition of overlying and adjacent barren metakomatiite flow's and the distribution of interflow metasediments with proximity to the ore zones.The high magnesium content of the host units (up to 45% MgO volatile-free) in comparison with that of aphyric or spinifex- textured lavas (16-32% MgO) has been considered previously to indicate either magmas/lavas rich in intratelluric olivine or selective accumulation of olivine phenocrysts. The marked linear trend of the oreshoots, basal host units, footwall embayments and the volcanic stratigraphic relationships have been used as evidence for local linear feeding fissures. Rare relict igneous olivine in some host units is, however, demonstrably not intratelluric, and there is no direct or indirect evidence of a proximal eruptive site (e.g. footwall feeders, pyroclastic breccias, ultramafic intrusives) at Kambalda such as at some other deposits of this type. Kambalda is interpreted as a distal rather than proximal volcanic environment.Emplacement of the komatiite sequence at Kambalda was probably controlled by the locations of a few specific eruptive sites relative to regional topographic gradients and influenced by the topography of the pre-existing volcanic surface. Olivine enrichment in the basal host units occurred by in-situ fractionation and cumulus crystallization of olivine during longitudinal lava flow within linear lava conduits, possibly centralized on depressions between non-overlapping footwall basalt flows. The distinctive stratigraphic relationships are attributed to localization of lava conduits along the volcanic pitchline, flanked by more slowly moving parts of the flows. There are analogies with the physical volcanology of Modern basaltic and Proterozoic komatiitic lava flows.A corollary of this model is that the lava conduits thermally eroded and assimilated sulphidic sediments, contributing additional sulphur to sulphur-saturated komatiites or possibly inducing sulphide separation in originally sulphur-undersaturated komatiites. The latter would account for the restriction of ores to linear cumulate komatiite host units (thermally active lava conduits) and the locally mutually exclusive, but stratigraphically equivalent, relationship between the ores and sulphidic metasediments at Kambalda."

The economic growth of Hong Kong and adjacent territories in Southern China is, to a considerable extent, dependant on air transportation, but the present Kai Tak Airport is incapable of expansion to meet future needs. After years of study, agreement was reached to build a new airport on the island of Chek Lap Kok, some 34 km remote from Hong Kong, with an ultimate capacity of 87M passengers and 8.9 Ml of cargo per annum. Apart from the building of the airport and its associated infrastructure (including a new town), other similar massive construction works have been necessary in the form of land reclamation from the sea and existing outer lying islands. The construction of bridges, tunnels, railways and highways are also an integral part of the project. The paper provides a broad overview of the concepts of the scheme (called The Airport Core Programme) and highlights some of the major operations and equipment being used in the projects, whose cost at 1992 prices was reckoned to he Hong Kong (HR)$l63hn.

Different ore types result from the irregular spatial distribution of the associated alkaline/carbonatite rocks and the zoned alteration profile within which apatite may have undergone reprecipitation. Different flotation responses are caused by their mineralogy, iron oxide impregnation and grain-size characteristics. Samples from seven deposits were crushed, screened and separated before being studied by chemical analysis, optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy, cathodoluminescence and scanning electron microscopy. Two main apatite varieties with peculiar crystal morphology were identified: hydroxy-fluorapatite as the primary phase and carbonate-fluorapatite as the reprecipitated phase. The former occurs as prismatic or ovoid grains and the latter as polycrystalline aggregates or crusts on the primary grains; both are associated with iron oxide coatings (primary) or intergrowths (secondary). Microflotation tests showed variations in flotability for particular apatite associations as well as intensity of iron oxide coatings. The differences in flotation behaviour can be related to morphological properties and chemical substitution in the apatite structure

Paper presented at Geofluids '93, held in Torquay, UK, 4-7 May 1993. The tin field consists of a fragment of Lower Proterozoic volcanosedimentary rocks surrounded by granitoids. Almost all the significant deposits are hosted by arkoses and are classified as replacement and space-filling types, with particular styles of mineralisation dominating at different mines. Petrological and geochemical investigation of borehole cores from four centres indicated the presence of a stratified zone 500-600 m thick and continuous over at least 20 km along strike, consisting of pervasively altered clastic arenitic sediments. The alteration is zoned into a grey-green sodic albitised footwall, an 80 m thick sericitised-tourmalinised sulphidic tin zone and a red haematitic potassic hanging-wall. The zoning and the localisation of three cassiterite phases are consistent with the tectonic history and with multiple pulses of stanniferous hydrothermal fluids derived from late differentiates of the granites over a prolonged period. Areas of high fracture density acted as conduits for the fluids, whose initially rapid ascent was retarded by decreasing pressure contrast, limited development of fracturing and/or impermeable shaly arkose to cause lateral spreading and pervasive alteration over a broad, stratified front. Lateral overlapping of local fronts at the various centres suggests a continuous zone, while the many petrological and geochemical similarities point to a shared fluid composition

An understanding of the thermodynamics of smelting copper anode slimes is a prerequisite for improvements to the process. During slimes smelting, a silver-copper selenide matte is formed and subsequently oxidised to silver metal. As part of a series of investigations, molten silver selenide matte was oxidised at 1 100 degrees C with pure oxygen. The chemical potential diagram for the system was developed and used for qualitative prediction of the results of the experiments. A simple, computational thermodynamic model of converting is presented, the adjustable parameters of which were determined by matching the model with the experimental results. The practical usefulness of the model was demonstrated by predicting the effect on silver recovery of smelting temperature and of using either oxygen or air as the smelting gas

Discussion by B.P.J. Stevens of the paper, published in Trans. IMMA, vol.104, 1995, p.B1-B17, is presented together with the authors' response. Stevens questions the authors' radically different interpretation of the structural geology of the Broken Hill Block, considering that the descriptive part of the paper is a useful addition but that the conclusions are unwarranted on the basis of the data presented. A number of major points of disagreement are outlined and half a dozen additional minor points listed. In response, the authors admire Stevens's contribution to unravelling the geology of the area but defend their attempts to take the regional studies a step further, pointing out that he has misquoted what they wrote and arguing that because of the assumptions underpinning the derivation of the present stratigraphy it cannot be used to constrain structural models. With regard to shear zones, they cite the extensive earlier literature and refer to horizontal displacements shown on maps produced by Stevens et al. Detailed discussion follows of the stratigraphy and of the stratigraphic correlation problems resulting from failure to recognise the presence and significance of shears, particularly those parallel to stratigraphy. The remobilised position of the Pb mineralisation in the North Mine open cut is reiterated. It is concluded that there is an urgent need for systematic isotopic dating in the area to constrain the stratigraphy

Static tests give a measure of the balance between acid-producing and acid-neutralising mineral components in a material, while kinetic tests determine acid generation and neutralisation over a long period. Drill-core samples from the amphibolite and gneiss host rocks of the Stratoni lead-zinc sulphide deposit in Greece and mine/mill waste samples from Stratoni and Olympias were examined by the standard acid base accounting, BCR and net acid production tests. Mineralogical data on the materials and resulting residues were used to illustrate the differences between the methods and establish their ranges of applicability. BCR seems to simulate most closely the conditions prevailing during generation of acid mine drainage but is time-consuming and requires elaborate equipment. The potential of eccentric cone crushers for fine crushing has been improved by increasing the swing frequency of the moving cone, balancing the crusher, ensuring uniform feed via a rotating funnel with sideways discharge, introducing hyperbolic motion and employing the inertia crushing method, but further improvements to the specifications of existing cone crusher designs are limited by the rigidity of their kinematic coupling. A new design has been developed which combines two crushing modes, stone on liner and stone on stone, each with its own advantages. The main aims are to produce finer materials and to reduce liner weight. The benefits include an increase of more than 10% in the output of fine particles, improved protection of the liner against wear, as a result of filling of the cavities by material being crushed, and the use of almost 20% less material in casting of the liner. The competitive adsorption of xanthates on sulphide minerals in a binary mineral system (pentlandite and pyrrhotite) was studied using the pseudo-in-situ technique of attenuated total-reflectance FTIR spectroscopy. The minerals were placed in the same collector solutions, either separated by a glass wall or in direct contact with each other before magnetic separation and separate analysis. The effect of mineral interaction on xanthate adsorption was clearly demonstrated spectroscopically for the first time. At low concentrations of xanthate, its adsorption on pentlandite was activated by physical contact with pyrrhotite; the effect may be attributed to the enhancement of electron transfer through electrical contact between the two minerals. The results emphasise the need for caution in extrapolating results obtained from single-mineral studies to flotation practice

The previous papers have been concerned only with the atmospheric oxidation of coals from the Barnsley Seam, for which it has been shown that an adequate explanation of the origin and nature of gob-fires can be based on the reaction between the coal itself and the oxygen of the air without the intervention of any other substance. It becomes of importance, therefore, to ascertain how far a similar explanation will hold good for spontaneous heating in other seams, and with this object in view samples including anthracite and lignite have been taken from a considerable number of pits in different parts of the UK (south Wales, Northumberland and Durham, north Staffordshire, Portrush and Ayrshire), some liable to fire, others not. There is abundant evidence to support the commonly-accepted view that spontaneous heating is due to the heat evolved during the absorption of oxygen from the air by coal or pyrites. The quantity of heat produced by the reaction has been measured and it has been shown that the observed rate of heating of a sample of coal agrees with the rate calculated from the heat of reaction and the rate of absorption of oxygen
