"The Code was developed in 2004 through the Collaboration Agreement between Institution of Mining Engineers of Chile (IIMCh) and the Ministry of Mining (Chile) in Dec 2002. It is an amalgamation of current practices with respect to standards and procedures for exploration prospects, mineral resources, and reserves for the purpose of public reporting. Certification is required to prepare and issue information on mineral assets according to the guidelines that regulate the technical, economic, and environmental aspects that satisfy the conditions set by the Chilean capital and financial markets.The Mineral Resources Committee of the Instititution of Mining Engineers of Chile (IIMCh) is pleased to introduce theCode for the Certification of Exploration Prospects, Mineral Resources and Reserves which is the result of a Collaboration Agreement between the IIMCh and the Ministry of Mining established in December, 2002.This code synthetizes the present practice of the mining industry in regard to standards and procedures applied to exploration prospects, mineral resources, and reserves with the purpose of reporting publicly on financial instruments based on these mine assets in the capital markets. These standards follow general criteria already adopted and applied by capital markets in those countries characterized by a very dynamic and well developed mining sector such as Australia, Canada, Southafrica, United Kingdom, and others. The work done by the Mineral Resources Committee of the IIMCh has had the recognition of the Combined Reserves International Reporting Standards Committee (CRIRSCO) that leads the establishement of an international code in these matters. CRIRISCO is an entity formed by representatives of the countries previously mentioned, a representative of the Society of Mining Engineers of the UStates and a representative of the IIMCh. "Titanium oxide films were fabricated on commercially pure titanium surfaces via anodization procedure. Anodization parameters, anodization time and voltage were altered, whereas temperature and chemical composition of anodization bath were kept constant. The main idea in this study is to obtain rough titanium-oxide surfaces. The type and feature of titanium oxide formed were observed via SEM and EDX analyses. What was revealed from SEM and EDX analyses were combined with Ti-O phase diagram in order to make judgment on the type of phases obtained, e.g. solid solution and/or compounds. Studies on the different regions of each sample showed that surfaces consist of different titanium oxide compounds with various O/Ti ratios in nano level and solid solutions varying in terms of chemistry on the same sample. Thus together rough surfaces and inhomogeneous distribution of "titanium oxides" were obtained. It was also found that when anodization time and voltage were increased, more granular surface with higher O/Ti atomic ratio was obtained."

"The Lucky Jim mine is at Zincton in Slocan mmmg division; on the Kaslo-Nakusp branch of the Canadian Pacific railway. It is owned and operated by Zincton Mines; Limited; a subsidiary of Sheep Creek Gold Mines; Limited. The mine is far in the lead in the production of zinc in the Slocan. Its recorded production from concentrates and shipping ore was 102; 260; 191 pounds of zinc to the end of 1945.GENERAL GEOLOGY With the exception of acidic dykes the rocks near the Lucky Jim mine belong to the Slocan series, which is Triassic in age and consists principally of argillaceous rocks. It disconformably overlies greenstones of the Triassic Kaslo series about 3 miles to the northeast, and is cut by granitic rocks of the Nelson batholith 5 miles to the southeast.The sedimentary rocks in this area are best referred to on the whole as slates. They lie within the more fissile basal part of the Slocan series. The term 'slate belt' conveniently distinguishes this area of rocks characterized by slaty cleavage from the more massive argillites that are more characteristic of the Slocan as a whole. The contact between the slaty and massive argillites lies ½ mile southwest of the mine."

The operation of SAG mills is variable over time due to their continually changing liner shape, mass and subsequent load motion. However, this tends to be poorly accommodated in liner design and mill control, with only limited compensation made for this influence, usually in the first few weeks after a new liner is installed. With ever-increasing ore competency, increasing energy costs and decreasing ore grades, simplified design and operational approaches that compromise the achievable mill efficiency are no longer adequate. This paper presents a methodology that has been developed to measure and account for the changes in mill performance as the liner wears. This involves monitoring all liner profiles ? in other words the three-dimensional liner shape - over the life of the liner, then conducting controlled surveys at different stages of the liner wear life, and correlating the mill performance to the liner profiles. The measured liner mass is modelled to provide an ongoing meaningful load mass measure that excludes the liner mass.

Recent interest in unconventional reservoirs motivates our work in laboratory measurements of seismic anisotropy. Seismic anisotropy is the variation in speed of a wave as a function of its direction of propagation. Analyzing anisotropy in unconventional reservoirs is important since anisotropy leads, for example, to differential stresses upon loading and could affect hydraulic stimulation (Reinicke et al., 2010, Zimmermann and Reinicke, 2009); in this sense, laboratory measurements are an important tool to study seismic anisotropy at small scales which can aid in the characterization of larger formations. The purpose of this work is to describe the laboratory methodology used to simultaneously measure ultrasonic P and S-waves in three different directions from a single core sample. Elastic anisotropy of a Proterozoic sedimentary rock from south-west Alberta is investigated. In metamorphic rocks seismic anisotropy is caused by preferred mineralogical alignment or foliation. Assuming a transversally isotropic medium, arrays of compressional and shear piezoelectric ceramic transducers were mounted on a sample trimmed from a core to measure travel times of ultrasonic P-waves and S-waves as a function of confining pressure at directions perpendicular, parallel, and oblique to the plane of foliation (bedding). Results show strong anisotropy agreeing with the assumption of a transversely isotropic medium. Dependence of travel times and hysteresis effects can be observed when pressurizing and depressurizing.

"Dust samplers are based on different principles. The konimeter is based on the number of particles counted; mining applications are based on routine sampling; and the photometrical evaluation of samples is used after the pre-separation of particles above 5 micron by the mining konimeter. In special cases, the Draeger sampler is used for quantitative analysis. General trends are toward larger samples, concentration on a weight basis, fractionation into size groups by different techniques and an analysis of composition. Standards or TLVs already exist in all industries. Surface industries base their criteria on concentrations and quartz contents in particles below 5 micron. The mining industry uses the tyndalloscope routinely to determine concentrations; concurrent] y, the rock content, as deter-mined by ashing samples, is obtained by konimeter.Threshold limits are related to the rock content in respirable fractions and tyndallometrically determined concentrations. The TL Vs are based empirically on Landwehr's ""dust values,"" as agreed upon with the Mines Inspectorates. Recently, and in accurate sampling, dust samplers have been used that count the dust in two fractions -above and below 5 microns. Mineral composition is determined either for all minerais or just for quartz. In assessing the dust hazard by Landwehr's ""dust values,"" all minerais are taken into consideration; in coal dust sampling, however, only the quartz content is taken into account. Efforts are now being made to co-ordinate the different assessment methods, arriving at uniform MAC values in agreement with those of other countries."

"The LaRonde mill was commissioned in 1988 and began treating ore from the Penna shaft in 2000. The mill has been expanded to accommodate 7,500 t/day, but ramped down to 6,000 t/day since the deep extension began. The process recovers gold, silver, and base metals. In 2008, the Goldex plant began trucking gold-pyrite concentrate to a treatment plant feeding pulp to the LaRonde mill, increasing gold output by 40,000 oz. In 2009, the high-grade Lapa ore processing facilities were annexed to the LaRonde plant, increasing gold output by 120,000 oz. This paper outlines the metallurgical considerations related to the treatment of different ore types.RÉSUMÉ Le concentrateur de la mine LaRonde a été mis en service en 1988 et a commencé à traiter le minerai du puits Penna en 2000. La capacité du concentrateur a augmenté afin de permettre le traitement de 7 500 tonnes de minerai par jour, capacité qui est retombée à 6 000 tonnes par jour (tpj) depuis le début de l’extension en profondeur de la mine. Ce procédé permet de récupérer de l’or, de l’argent et des métaux communs. En 2008, l’usine de traitement Goldex a commencé à transporter par camion du concentré de pyrite et d’or vers une usine de traitement alimentant en pulpe le concentrateur de LaRonde, augmentant ainsi la production d’or de 40 000 onces. En 2009, les installations de traitement du minerai à haute teneur de Lapa ont été annexées à l’usine de traitement de LaRonde, augmentant la production d’or de 120 000 onces. Cet article passe en revue les considérations métallurgiques liées au traitement de différents types de minerai.INTRODUCTIONThe LaRonde metallurgical plant in the Abitibi region of Quebec, Canada, evolved into a mature milling site following expansions in 2000–2003, thanks to improved processes, manpower, and water treatment capabilities that better accommodate the complex constituents of the LaRonde ore. The ore requires a sequence of grinding, copper- lead and zinc flotation, and precious metals leaching, ending with a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) gold recovery. A portion (35%) of the tailings is sent back underground as paste backfill after being treated with the SO2-air cyanide destruction process. The tailings area has a dedicated cyanide destruction and metal precipitation area through which the used water passes before returning as recycled water. A biological water treatment plant was built in 2004 to address water toxicity in the final effluent. The water toxicity was the result of the high sulfide content of the LaRonde ore (from thiocyanate or stable cyanide species buildup) and the use of 90% recirculated water in the mill. The water treatment plant uses bacteria to transform thiocyanate into nitrates and precipitate phosphorus from the water before it is discharged into the environment."

Traditional approach to improvement is driven by good ideas from good people, but whilst the business case may sound good, when the project is complete, we often have not delivered on expectations.  Why not? The best way to successfully predict the outcomes of an improvement effort in a complex process is through using statistical modelling, which considers the impact of uncertainty within interacting processes.  Applying Theory of Constraints in a model helps leaders to quickly determine: Where the constraining process(es) is/are Where improvements will add the most value How much improvement should be targeted - before the next constraint takes over The confidence level of achieving a given target, which gives us a clear pathway to improvement. This paper presents an analysis of statistical modelling applications at Vale’s Manitoba Operations to achieve the 2025 targets. Using statistical modelling of the Business Structure, the team identified a series of process improvements through a Theory of Constraints Analysis. Value Stream Maps (VSMs) were used to define the required data, apply statistical modelling, and conduct training sessions enabling the Manitoba team to identify the constraining influences. During the summer of 1994, a new PID-based control strategy was installed on line B of the grinding circuit at the Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Ltd. Part I of this paper described the methodology used to select the appropriate control strategy using a phenomenological dynamic simulator. Part II presents the implementation of the control strategy. Prior to the controller installation, it was necessary to solve various problems related to the process, such as a cyclic behaviour of the rod mill feed tonnage, a problem related to the mill water source and the calibration of the flowmeters. Once these problems were solved, the control strategy was accomplished in two steps. Step 1 corresponds to the installation of control loops to regulate the pump box level and the cyclone overflow density. Step 2 describes the implementation of a loop to control the cyclone feed density. According to Part I, a loop to control the circulating load is also part of the original design. However, reasons are given to explain the rejection of this loop. For both steps, technical procedures such as filtering, process identification and controller tuning are detailed. Finally, the operator’s interface is briefly described.

The use of sidewall copper cooling systems to prolong furnace campaign life is becoming an accepted technology solution in the base metals industry. Tenova Pyromet has designed and installed a number of sidewall copper cooling systems in base metals furnaces, including the platinum industry. Apart from increasing the furnace campaign life through the formation of a stable freeze lining, a well-designed copper cooling system enables the plant operator to focus more on optimizing the process to achieve throughput and recovery targets, and to accommodate more varied and available concentrate feed blends. The paper discusses the design of sidewall copper cooling systems for copper smelting and converting furnaces to achieve the above objectives. More specifically, the design of copper cooling systems for top submerged lance furnaces are discussed. An overall increase in furnace heat losses has been raised as a concern for intensively cooled sidewalls. The paper explores the overall heat loss expectations for copper cooled furnaces versus traditional refractory lined furnaces. In addition, the potential use of alternative cooling media is discussed. INTRODUCTION Base metal smelting and converting furnace technologies have been evolving continuously over the past century to satisfy the need for higher throughput, improved efficiency, and longer campaign life. To accommodate these demands, in particular higher smelting intensity and throughput, furnace bath containment systems had to improve. The use of pure refractory lining systems has slowly made room for the use of more intensively cooled lining systems (Joubert, Nikolic, Bakker & Mc Dougall, 2016). These cooling systems evolved from external shell cooling, such as shower or film cooling, to copper plate coolers extending into the furnace refractory lining, and high intensity stave or panel coolers (Verscheure, Kyllo, Filzwieser, Blanpain & Wollants, 2006). Consequently, an increasing number of base metal smelting and converting furnaces are equipped with copper cooling systems, including flash furnaces (Bryk, Ryselin, Honkasalo, & Malmstrom, 1958; Yasuda, Motomura & Kawasaki, 2014; Marx, Shapiro & Henning, 2010), top submerged lance primary smelting and fuming furnaces (Bhappu, Larson & Tunis, 1994; Kim, Lee & Lee, 2000; MacRae & Steinborn, 2018), top submerged lance converting furnaces (Viviers & Hines, 2005; Nikolic, Hogg & Voigt, 2018), primary platinum smelting electric furnaces (Nelson, Stober, Ndlovu, De Villiers & Wanblad, 2005; Jones, 2005; Hundermark, De Villiers & Ndlovu, 2006; Mc Dougall, 2013), and electric slag cleaning furnaces (Joubert, Nourse, Masters & Hundermark, 2005).

Relationships of Noranda sulphide deposits to volcanic rocks are reviewed and chemical variations within the volcanic sequence are described. The assemblages of minor elements in the pyrites and pyrrhotites of the Noranda and l\llatagami deposits are similar and are characterized by a high content of cobalt, tin and other elements. Isotopic compositions of lead, other geochronological data and stratigraphically disposed zonal distributions of sulphides and minor elements indicate that the deposits were formed prior to folding and metamorphism. Lead isotope data indicate that the Matagami deposits, and several others, were probably formed about 2.95 x 109 years ago and that the Noranda deposits may be about 50 million years younger. The volcanic sequence at Noranda is younger than the thick sequences bordering it on the east and on the west. The relationships are consistent with the hypothesis that these strata-bound sul1>hide de-posits are coeval with their associated volcanic rocks. "Huge amounts of air pollution scrubber sludge have been generated during ferromanganese production using blast furnace. These residues have been historically deposited in ponds near steel making plants. They are very rich in zinc, manganese and lead (5 to 40 %) and also contain aluminum and iron. Considering the market value of these metals, brownfield sites can now be used as secondary resources. These ponds also have to be cleaned up to meet the environmental regulations.We have developed a hydrometallurgical process to recover Zn, Mn and Pb in order to produce valuable compounds of Mn and Zn and recover the final Pb residue by pyrometallurgy. The Zn and Mn compounds need to be pure enough to be economically valuable. Batch laboratory tests were carried out to determine suitable selective leaching conditions. The investigated operating conditions were acid concentration, pulp density and temperature. Optimal conditions to maximize zinc extraction (100 %) and manganese extraction (95.9 %) were found using sulfuric acid and sodium metabisulfide. The final residue contained 14.8 to 23.8 % of Pb. Then, Zn was recovered in the form of ZnO or ZnS by precipitation and Zn metal by electrowinning, while Mn was recovered as MnCO3 with a fairly acceptable concentration of impurities.INTRODUCTIONFerromanganese has been produced by pyrometallurgy in much of Western Europe for centuries. Use of wet scrubber to remove pollutant and dust particles from gas stream was common for most of these operations. Those residues contain high concentration of Zn, Mn and Pb. They have been left to decant in settling ponds installed close to the steel production plants. They now constitute heavily contaminated artificial soils. Those sludges are so contaminated with Zn, Mn and Pb that they can be used for metal production. Currently, no method is available to decontaminate these residues and recover Zn, Mn and Pb. Therefore, an approach considering these brownfield sites as secondary resource is in development. Doing so would achieve two goals, decontaminate the site and produce metals.. "This study aims to demonstrate the capacity of the Discrete Element Method (DEM) to model and simulate fracture in brittle rock, capture the crack propagation process and determine crack propagation rates for various levels of external loading. In the numerical experiments reported here, a macroscopically homogeneous body of brittle rock, containing a single pre-existing crack, was subjected to tensile stress loading. Simulations concerned with model I crack growth process in 3D were carried out. The process of fracture has been observed under various steady state and dynamic conditions. The numerical results obtained reproduce qualitatively and quantitatively a variety of observed fracture phenomena. Specifically, this study examined the onset of cracks, single dominant cracks that grow across the specimen, crack bifurcations and branching. The density of fractures that can be nucleated and grow to a significant size with and without arresting each other, crack growth speed and stress distribution, all have been consistently and systematically analyzed. Suggestions on potential future developments are made and discussed.INTRODUCTIONFracture and failure mechanics are very important in mining, manufacturing, materials processing, mineral processing, civil and mechanical engineering, and many other disciplines of science and engineering. Yet, due to the complexity of fracture phenomena, no theoretical models of broad applicability are currently available (Bieniawski 1967). The simulation of crack propagation is therefore considered an open question in numerical rock mechanics. Although, a significant body of experimental research on fracture of materials was carried out since the early days of fracture mechanics (circa 1940s) (Poncelet 1946, Mott 1948), often in parallel with the development of fracture mechanics theories as well as with the development of experimental and observational techniques themselves, the experimental results were often done on particular classes of material such as glasses and other very brittle materials. Indeed, a number of specific experimental observations on the behavior of growing cracks in brittle materials were made in the 1940s for which generally accepted explanations based on physical principles are still lacking. Likewise, quantitative numerical modeling, based on both continuum and discrete methods, as a basis for understanding dynamic crack growth is still in a preliminary stage."

THE DEFINITION of the continental margin, as considered in this paper, is in the broad sense: " ... those provinces of the continents and of the oceans which are associated with the boundary between these two first-order features of the earth" (Heezen et aL, 1959, p. 17). The provinces in the area under con-sideration are: the Continental Shelf, the Continental Slope and the Continental Rise. The Continental Shelf extends from the shoreline to the shelf break, which lies at approximately the 200-meter isobath through-out the region (except north of the Grand Banks, where the break may be defined more properly by the 400-meter isobath). The Continental Slope and Rise occur between the shelf break and the 4,000-meter isobath. (The last figure was somewhat arbitrarily selected for the purpose of this paper.) The Atlantic Continental Margin as thus defined extends along the eastern coast of Canada from the International Boundary in the Gulf of Maine northward to approximately the 60°N latitude off the coast of Labrador. The area of study amounts to at }east 500,000 square miles -an area roughly equivalent to 13 per cent of Canada's total land surface.

Prior to November 1975 there were several failures of front -wheel spindles on large haulage truck s in B.C., attributed to fatigue cracks. Since that time, a non-destructive test program has succeeded in detecting the cracks before catastrophic failure, However, the author regards the failures as just one example of a. general unreliability in large high-strength steel castings and urges the industry to look to forgings for sensitive components of heavy equipment.

This study investigated bio-liquefaction of lignite and its model compounds of thymol, bezioc acid and quinoline by a fungus, Hypocrea lixii AH. It analyzed, during bio-liquefaction, enzyme activity of oxidase, LiP, Lac, MnP and polyphenol oxidase, and degradation products by UV-Vis, FTIR, 13C NMR and GC-MS. The results showed that the bio-liquefaction percentage (by mass) of lignite was up to 44.86 %. The bio-liquefaction products of lignite were mainly aniline, amide, ether, carboxylic acid ketone and ester. The aromatic ring number was 1-3 with an aromatic carbon ratio of 0.328, which indicated rings opening, bonds breaking and oxidation reaction. By considering with the enzyme activity analysis results, it showed that LiP and Lac catalyzed reactions to open aromatic cycles and to break bonds; esterase to break ester bond; and peroxidase in oxidation reaction.

"This paper describes a ventilation project at the Wassa gold mine in Ghana. Golden Star (Wassa) (GSWL), a subsidiary of Golden Star Resources, owns and operates the mine. Golden Star holds a 90% interest in GSWL, while the Ghanaian Government holds the remaining 10% ownership, earning a 5% royalty on the gross revenue of GSWL’s gold production. Construction of the underground mine began in mid-2015 and pre-commercial production started in June 2016. Commercial production from the underground mine was achieved in January 2017. This paper describes the ventilation studies performed to support the initial development and production at the mine. The initial ventilation design included four, parallel surface exhaust fans. Future designs will include booster fans, new primary fans, and additional connections to surface. The paper describes the long-term ventilation planning goals and expectations as the mine achieves a production of 4,000 tpd with truck haulage to surface.INTRODUCTIONThe Wassa Gold Mine is located in the southern portion of the Ashanti Greenstone Gold Belt in Ghana, northwest of Tarkwa as shown in Figure 1. The mine has been in production as an open pit since 1998, with some minor disruptions, but the surface minable reserves have become exhausted and the mine started a transition to an underground operation in 2015. The underground mine was initially developed with twin decline accesses extending from the base of the open pit to the mining areas. The mining method selected was sub-level open stoping with cemented rock backfill. The original production level for the mine was 2,500 tpd with ore and waste transported by trucks hauling in the ramps to surface. In 2017 the production goal was set to increase to approximately 4,000 tpd. This resulted in an increase in the truck haulage fleet in addition to a significant increase in ventilation requirements. This paper describes the ventilation upgrades at the mine as it transitioned from a surface to an underground operation and the adjustments the ventilation system needed to make in order to accommodate a significant increase in production"

"Cyanide destruction technologies are implemented at gold and silver operations to comply with the International Cyanide Management Code and meet ever more stringent discharge limits. Currently, the most common chemical cyanide destruction processes used in industry are sulfur dioxide/oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, and Caro’s acid. The cyanide destruction process used at an operation must reliably generate streams of acceptable quality at all times, and depends on numerous factors, including permit discharge requirements, tailings chemistry, location, site-specific climatic conditions and size of the operation. Selecting the most appropriate cyanide destruction process and determining the process design criteria requires accurate laboratory testing. This paper presents and discusses the results of a number of cyanide destruction evaluations that have been conducted to reduce cyanide concentration in process solutions or cyanidation tails. Laboratory testing provides important insights into reagent consumption and other factors required to achieve the target residual weak acid dissociable cyanide (CNWAD) levels.INTRODUCTION Process solutions associated with the extraction of gold and silver contain several forms of cyanide. The most toxic form of cyanide is free cyanide, which can be present as a dissociated cyanide anion (CN-) or gaseous or aqueous HCN. Weak or moderately stable cyanide complexes such as those of zinc, copper and nickel are classified as weak acid dissociable (CNWAD). Although less toxic than free cyanide, weak acid dissociable cyanide complexes are considered “ecologically sensitive” forms of cyanide and are regulated in most jurisdictions. In practice, reported WAD cyanide values comprises both free cyanide and weak acid dissociable cyanide complexes. Cyanide complexes with gold, mercury, cobalt and iron are referred to as strong acid dissociable complexes (CNSAD) and are much more stable, even under mildly acidic conditions. Another term commonly used in cyanide chemistry is total cyanide, which represents all cyanide compounds present in solution. Total cyanide levels in solutions are always equal to or higher than WAD cyanide values and the difference between the two usually indicates the presence of iron-cyanide compounds. Typically in Canada, CNTOTAL levels cannot exceed 1 mg/L in solutions discharged to the environment."

"In October 1984, Rocanville Division began using a stacking system to handle potash mill tailings. Previous to this date, mill tailings were slurried to the top of the tailings pile and allowed to debrine while flowing mobile stackers. The stackers consist of cyclone packs to debrine the tailings and drag conveyors with screw discharges to deposit the tailings onto the existing pile. The paper will deal with the various aspects of the project from conception to its present state. IntroductionPrevious to 1984, when the stacking project was first implemented, potash mill tailings were handled as follows. Mill tailings were first debrined to approximately 65% solids using a cyclone cluster. The cyclone underflows were then introduced onto a vacuum scroll filter table. Here the tailings were further debrined and discharged into the disposal tank where the tailings were reslurried with reclaim brine and pumped to the tailings disposal site. At the disposal site the slurry was discharged onto the tailings pile and by a natural settling process the tailings were debrined with the brine ultimately collected in the reclaim brine ponds. The shape and profile of the tailings pile was controlled by building salt dikes to control the flow of the discharged tailings slurry. As the tailings pile grew in height, booster pumps were added to the disposal system."
