Over forty years of uranium mining in the Elliot Lake region of Ontario (1956–1996) has resulted in the production of over 300 million pounds of uranium. With the completion of mining activity, Rio Algom Limited and Denison Mines Limited are utilizing progressive environmental technologies and management systems to reduce and manage the environmental risks associated with the 150 million tonnes of potentially acid-generating tailings in nine regional waste management areas. Water covers designed to reduce oxygen entry and, thereby, significantly inhibit acid generation, have been applied at six of the sites with the Quirke site serving as a demonstration site for the Mine Environmental Neutral Drainage program. All five of Rio Algom Limited’s effluent treatment plants are monitored and controlled from a central control station utilizing a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system based on “Fix Dmacs” technology. Scheduling, auditing and reporting of plant operating and environmental monitoring programs for the entire watershed are controlled utilizing the Regional Environmental Information Management System (REIMS). Proper application of these technologies and management systems facilitates delivery of cost-effective environmental monitoring, care and maintenance programs at these sites and provides tools to demonstrate compliance with all environmental performance criteria.

GENERALLY speaking, the Industry lost ground in 1941 in its accident experience. Though the frequency of compensation accidents was but slightly higher than in the previous year and well below past experience, our fatality rate shot up to that obtaining in 1938, and the average cost per man employed was the highest for some time. The number of fatalities was 56 in 1941 as against 33 in 1940. The average cost of compensation per man employed was $34.25 in 1941 as against $28.43. There was but a slight increase in the number of men employed. Accident prevention efforts were maintained, as shown by our frequency, but our accidents were of a more serious nature. In a period of considerable labour turnover, with many new men entering the Industry, especially the base-metal division, and much mental distraction, we might well have expected a high rate of accidents. That this did not occur is a tribute to managers, supervisors, and workmen alike. We all regret the high fatality rate and one must consider why this occurred. So far as it is possible to determine, there is no apparent explanation. There were no disasters. The accidents occurred to the same class of work-men, both in respect to jobs and age groups, and from the same age-old causes that we all know so well. Luck is a big factor in the seriousness of an accident; the solution lies in preventing accidents, even first-aid cases. Generally speaking, if minor accidents do not occur, major accidents do not occur.

"This paper presents the use of queuing theory in truck fleet sizing in open pit mining operations. In the first part, a methodology is developed by which an optimal ratio between the size of shovels and trucks may be determined. The second part gives the fundamentals of the queuing theory and its application in analyzing shovel and trucks. Masses of pyritic copper and zinc ores are entrapped along the contact zone between two volcanic groups in the Matagami area. The upper limits of the sulphide concentrations tend to form concordant contacts against lava or cherty tuffite units of the younger group; the lower extremities tend to either follow transverse structures or merge with zones of dispersed sulphides. The sulphides are deformed and intruded by folded dykes. Close relations between metallization boundaries and volcanic lithology and stratigraphy, and a preliminary investigation of the fabrics and crystallization temperatures of the sulphide masses, suggest that the copper and zinc (but; not necessarily all the iron sulphides) were emplaced at h1gh temperatures during volcanism in near-surface lithological-stratigraphic traps. Introduction T HE Matagami area is centered 120 miles north of the Val d'Or and Noranda camps in north-western Quebec. For the present purpose, it is considered to comprise a 155-square-mile area in Isle-Dieu, Galinee and Daniel townships which encompasses the main sulphide masses. "Collaboration among Ventilation Engineers, Mine Inspectors, worker representatives, health and safety officers and management is key to an effective operational mine ventilation management. Mine ventilation training, ventilation survey reports for mine stakeholders and interaction with mine frontline workers and management concerning safety, energy saving, assets management and maintenance are effective tools in implementing best industry practices and significant reduction of ventilation operating costs without compromising safety. These approaches may not be new to well established mining companies but the real dilemma is how to implement them effectively and this is what this paper will address.INTRODUCTIONManaging an effective mine ventilation system is becoming increasingly challenging, especially during tough economic times in the mining industry. Management strives for more production while frontline miners work hard to surpass the production targets, thus improving their incentives and above all aiming to enhance the prospects of their job security when the mining industry is facing challenging times. Taking shortcuts by not fully following the safety regulations or industry best practices are often notable, resulting in the rise of Workers Compensation Board claims and temporary shutdowns of active workings, compromising productivity and increasing the operating costs.In accordance with the Mines regulations in various jurisdictions in Canada and the US, it is evident that companies adhere to establishing basic ventilation management systems through the provision of the code of practice, procedures, work practices and standards/guidelines. This is aimed at ensuring the health and safety of underground workers (de Souza, 2017). However, the challenge to many operations is the improper implementation of the mine ventilation regulations including some managers showing reckless disregard for workers safety by focusing on production and not worrying to address ventilation problems (Steven & O'Keefe, 2010). Other challenges facing effective ventilation management include inadequate training of frontline workers on ventilation system and hazards associated with poor ventilation systems such as toxic gases, dust, heat, and underground explosions (Mufson et al., 2010; Suvar et al., 2017); friction between mine managers and the mine inspectors (Mufson et al., 2010), improper maintenance of ventilation system and inventory management, among others."

Portland cement is primarily used to solidify backfill in underground mine workings and it represents a major cost in mining operations. CANMET-MMSL has invented an alternative binder technology that does not contain any amount of Portland cement and is made using waste materials, such as development rock and smelter slag. The technology has been successfully tested with many types of base metal and ferrous slag. Research conducted in collaboration with several mining operations in Canada has shown that the CANMET-MMSL binder has considerable potential as a replacement for Portland cement in mine backfill. An integral part of the overall mining operation, backfill is used for two main purposes: safety and environmental remediation. Depending on the mining method used, backfill provides a working surface, stabilizes stope and pillar walls, as well as the surrounding rock mass, and controls caving of stope backs. There are several benefits associated with the replacement of Portland cement in backfill, including reductions in (i) the footprint by placement of slag waste underground, (ii) the environmental effects and long term liability resulting from disposal and containment of slag waste on surface such as acid rock drainage, (iii) GHG as a result of reduced Portland cement usage (the production of 1 ton of Portland cement produces 1 ton of GHG), and (iv) the significant costs associated with reduced Portland cement usage.

"The risk management objective of the AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has seldom been systematically investigated in the literature up to the authors’ knowledge. Risk is defined in the Australian Standard on Risk Management (AS/NZS 4360:2004), as “the chance of something happening that will have an impact on objectives”. The simplified economic analysis performed in this paper has lead to define “something happening” as measurement non-representativity and “impact on objectives” as NSR loss from the optimal NSR. This has pinpointed a missing link being the establishment of a relation between NSR in flotation plants and measurement representativity. The proposed framework, referred to as the total cost of representativity, answers the previously unanswered question of how much accuracy/reproducibility is fit for purpose in a given flotation plant. Authors readily acknowledge that it is way easier to assess the cost of accuracy/reproducibility than the cost of inaccuracy/irreproducibility. However, this exercise not only answers previously unanswered questions but also establishes an essential link with operational excellence. This paper exposes why such operational excellence could neither be attained nor proved without a state of the art metal accounting system. This should impact not only how metal accounting systems are audited/designed/refactored, but also how flotation plants are designed.IntroductionBecause representative metal accounting is a vital source of information for the financial accounts of a mining/metallurgical company, the need for a code on metal accounting was recognized in 2001 and a team was formed in 2003, under the sponsorship of several major mining houses, to produce such a code. Cu–Ti alloy wires doped with and without a small amount of Ni were fabricated by over-aging and using intense drawing procedures. For both the Cu–Ti alloys with and without Ni doping, the over- aged microstructure was occupied fully with a coarse lamella of Cu solid solution and β-Cu4Ti plates precipitated discontinuously by grain boundary reactions. The full-lamellar microstructure was developed much more rapidly by aging in multi steps at 873 K to 723 K rather than by isothermal aging at 723 K. Ni doping in Cu-Ti alloy was also effective to accelerate the formation of the lamellar microstructure. When drawing the over-aged alloy with inferior hardness but superior electrical conductivity, the strength increased steadily and eventually exceeded that for the wires drawn from the peak-aged alloy. In addition, the electrical conductivity of the wires drawn from the over-aged alloy was always much greater than that from the peak-aged alloy. Eventually, the procedure of over-aging, followed by intense drawing, could enhance both the strength and electrical conductivity of Cu-Ti alloys, whichever they contain a small amount of Ni or not, rather than the conventional peak-aging and drawing process. INTRODUCTION Cu-based alloy wires, which have an excellent combination of strength and electrical conductivity, have attracted extensive attention for highly mechanically stressed electrical devices, such as conductive lead wires and wires in suspension springs. Cu-Be alloys are widely used for such electrical components owing to their combination of strength and electrical conductivity among industrial Cu-based alloys. However, since beryllium is potentially toxic and also a rare element, substitute materials for Cu-Be alloys have been searched for several decades. Age-hardenable Cu–Ti based alloys have been proposed as candidates because their mechanical and physical properties are comparable to those of Cu-Be alloys; however, their electrical conductivity is inferior (Datta & Soffa, 1976; Soffa & Laughlin, 2004). In order to satisfy the requirement of downsizing and streamlining electrical devices, further improvement of the mechanical and electrical properties of Cu–Ti alloy wires is needed. Age-hardenable Cu–Ti alloys, which contain approximately 3 to 6 at.% Ti, are typically prepared using a solid solution treatment above 1100 K and then aging at a moderate temperature of 700 K to 800 K. It has been revealed that the microstructural events during aging progress as follows (Soffa & Laughlin, 2004): (1) compositional modulation of the parent supersaturated Cu solid solution in an initial aging stage (Laughlin & Cahn, 1975), (2) continuous nucleation and growth of fine needle-shaped precipitates of metastable β’-Cu4Ti with a tetragonal structure in a peak-aged stage, and (3) discontinuous precipitation of cellular components laminating the plates of a terminal Cu solid solution and stable β-Cu4Ti with an orthorhombic structure at the grain boundaries in an over-aging stage. It has been also accepted that the highest number density of dispersed fine β’-Cu4Ti needles should contribute to maximal strengthening. On the other hand, decease of the strength in the over-aging stage occurs due to the replacement of the fine β’- Cu4Ti needles with cellular components containing coarse β-Cu4Ti plates, while the electrical conductivity is significantly enhanced due to the depletion of solute Ti in the Cu matrix. This suggests that a combination of strength and electrical conductivity for age-hardenable Cu-Ti alloys is in a trade-off relationship, and that innovative improvement of both properties might be limited to tuning the aging conditions.

"IntroductionTHE PROPERTY of Madsen Red Lake Gold Mines. Limited. comprises fifty-eight claims located between Russet and Faulkenham lakes in Baird and Heyson townships of the Patricia portion of the District of Kenora. The mine is seven miles •by road from the hamlet of Red Lake. This latter centre is .connected to the Trans-Canada Highway at Vermillion Bay, Ontario, by provincial highway No. 105 which has a total length of one hundred and thirteen miles.The Madsen property went into production on August 11th, 1938, with a milling plant rated at 300 tons per twenty-four hours. Changes made in the crushing plant during October, 1938, allowed a •finer feed to be delivered to the mill and increased the milling •capacity to 400 tons per twenty-four hours. During 1948, steps were taken to add an additional 400-ton capacity unit to the milling plant. This latter work was completed by May, 1949, giving the present total milling .capacity of 800 tons per twenty-four hours.It was realized in the early 1940's that, eventually, considerable material suitable for backfilling in the mine would be required. As there were no large deposits of gravel or sand anywhere near the mine, officials of the Company considered it advisable to investigate the feasibility of using mill tailings for mine •backfill. Since Madsen mill tailings contain approximately 80 per •cent of minus-200-mesh material, it was not considered practical to use them for underground backfill without first removing the finer material. as the slimes present in a product of this fineness would without doubt preclude any drainage whatsoever. Table I gives a sizing analysis of Madsen mill tailings and Table II a quantitative chemical analysis of the ore."

Machinery Systems Division (MSD) in the Institute of Mining Engineering at Wroclaw University of Technology specializes in belt conveying systems analyzing, calculating and design. Within the division operates the certified Laboratory of Belt Transportation (LTT) and Laboratory of Rollers. Since few years, a group of several people have begun work on developing a comprehensive system for the automatic evaluation of condition of conveyor belts working in the mines. Group uses both magnetic devices developed by specialized companies servicing belts and its own machine vision system developed for assessment of belts covers and edges during belt movement (up to 7 m / s) on the specially designed for this purpose the test conveyor. Recently they have got the research grant funded by the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBiR) for development of the system for automatic diagnosing of conveyor belts? condition and aiding of rational belt management. On the basis of previously created diagnostic tool called ABCDE (Automatic Belt Condition Diagnostic Equipment) the five modules: vision-A magnetic-B, preventive-C, forecasting?D, and determining safety factor-E will be developed. They will automatically interpret data about conveyor belts? condition to indicate the extent and timing of repairs, to prevent failures and to select the optimum moments for their replacements. The system will use results of ongoing research & development and planned research concerning modeling of belt wear using evolutionary genetic algorithms. The reached stage of research can not yet allow to start the implementation work by potential users. It is therefore necessary to pursuit research in real scale, the development of new modules (C-E) and intensive testing of the system in working condition with system calibration to optimize the economic effects.

Extraction of sill pillars has always been problematic because of high risk of seismicity and rockburst. Depending on a number of factors, a sill pillar can undergo different failure modes and cause problems in the mine. Of these, sudden and uncontrolled failure of part(s) of the pillar leading to highenergy seismic events and rockbursts is a main concern because it is not possible to predict the location and time of a rockburst apart from its potential to cause extensive damage to the mine structures. To date, a comprehensive technique for sill pillar design and recovery does not exist. Conventional methods of pillar design, such as the pillar stability graph method, are utilized to design stiff sill pillars. In these design approaches, the post-peak response of the pillar-rock system is not considered. This is in part due to a lack of clear and comprehensive understanding of the post-peak behaviour and failure mechanism of sill pillars. In general, the strength of a rockmass is described using a failure criterion. When stresses reach the strength of the rockmass, the rockmass does not necessarily become unstable and knowledge of the loads alone is not enough to assess the instability conditions accurately. In fact, it is not possible to predict instability of rockmass based on the strength/stress ratio alone because instability depends not only on this ratio but also on the loading condition and loading system characteristics. The loading system can dictate whether the sill pillar will go through a stable or unstable failure process. This paper examines the influence of various parameters such as the pillar width to height ratio, the extraction rate, and placement of backfill on the Loading System Stiffness (LSS) and the Pillar Stiffness (PSS). The ultimate goal is to design yielding sill pillars that would yield in a stable manner and will reduce the risk of pillar rockburst. Plane strain finite element analysis is conducted using the generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion with elastic-brittle-plastic parameters. Examples are given to demonstrate how to calculate these stiffness values and assess the stability condition of sill pillars. It is found that increasing the rate of extraction increases the likelihood of unstable yielding of the pillar as has been found in other studies. Placement of backfill in a timely fashion in the stopes above and below the sill pillars increases the stiffness of the loading system. This indicates that backfilling of stopes while creating the sill pillar increases the likelihood of stable yielding of the sill pillar.

Samples of an as extruded Mg-6Zn-0.6Zr-0.4Ag-0.2-Ca (wt.%) alloy was compressed at room temperature and at 250°C. The in situ deformation tests were performed at the P07 (HEMS) beamline of PETRA III, DESY, with a modified DIL 805 A/D dilatometer with to Kapton windows on the sides and the induction coil opened for the beam to transmit the sample. The deformation rate was 10-3 s-1 the samples were deformed to failure. The diffraction patterns were recorded every 3 s with a Perkin Elmer 1621 Flat Panel Detector. The results reveal that different deformation mechanisms are activated during compression at a given strain value. At room temperature twinning is the dominant deformation mechanism, while at elevated temperature dynamic recrystallization occurs while the contribution of twinning to deformation is significantly reduced. The compressed samples were further investigated with conventional metallography and SEM-EBSD to determine the volume fraction, the type of twinning and the strain retained within the grains. The parallel testing of pure Mg samples under the same conditions allows comparison of the compression behaviour of the ZKQX alloy with Mg.

"In June, 2018 Lalor Mine experienced a catastrophic blade failure of its No. 2 main exhaust fan. Over the following weeks several key changes were made to the auxiliary ventilation system to allow for continued production while the exhaust fans were repaired. Issues encountered during the period of reduced ventilation, and how they were addressed, are analyzed. The suspected causes of the exhaust fan blade failure and how risk was mitigated during the reconstruction are discussed. Key findings and lessons learned are summarized.INTRODUCTIONLalor Mine, owned and operated by Hudbay is an underground zinc, gold, and copper mine located in northern Manitoba. The mine workings extend to a depth of 1090 metres below surface and is ventilated using a push-pull system. The mine exhausts through the main exhaust raise; equipped with two, 2,500 HP fans and upcasts through a portal located at the neighboring mine, Chisel North. Air is supplied to Lalor Mine through four intake fans: The Production Shaft Downcast (two, 250 HP), Lalor Downcast (one, 400 HP), and Chisel Downcast (one, 600 HP) fans (Figure 1). In June 2018, Lalor was scheduled to produce approximately 4,000 tpd.On June 20, 2018 at 2:52 pm Lalor Mine experienced a fault on the Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) for Exhaust Fan No. 1. Time would be needed to complete the necessary repairs. The No. 2 exhaust fan was ramped up from 525 rpm to 800 rpm, 90% of its capacity, in order to maintain underground ventilation. At 4:46 pm, approximately two hours after the rpm was increased, exhaust fan No. 2 experienced a catastrophic blade failure. The forces from the blade failure resulted in the top half of the fan housing being thrown 50 metres from where it was installed; with several large sections of fan blade being thrown further (Figure 2)."

This belt is composed of an assemblage of poly-deformed volcanosedimentary supercrustal sequences intruded by pre and sin tectonic ultra mafic and mafic intrusions and sin to post tectonic granitoid.The principal gold bearing rock at the New Britannia Mine is made up of quartzcarbonate material in sequence of basic and acidic volcanic rocks contained within a shear zone. The ore itself is gold associated with the sulphide mineral arsenopyrite and contains some pyrite, pyrotite, plus chalcopyrite. Proven and probable reserves at December 31, 1997 were at 4.04 million tonnes at 4.6 g/t and underground exploration continues to confirm the extension of the ore zones to depth."

In the present study, the heat balance of the Hirakud smelter aluminium reduction cell has been accurately assessed using only a surface thermocouple and a pyrometer, As it is well known that using a single linear or quadratic relationship to estimate the heat flux from the measured surface temperature does not provide the accuracy required to close the cell heat balance, this approach was not used in this study, Instead, the fundamental natural convection and radiation heat flux equations were used systematically for each measurement point, Practically, this means that the ambient air temperature and at least one ambient radiative temperature must also be known in addition to the surface temperature for each measurement point. Sometimes, the radiative heat flux could not be accurately estimated using a single ambient radiative temperature, In those cases, a more accurate estimation based on two ambient radiative temperatures and corresponding view factors has been used instead, It turns out that although at least three temperature measurements are required to estimate a single heat flux, it takes a lot less time to make those temperature measurements using a pyrometer than directly measuring the heat flux using an expensive heat flux meter, Furthermore, no loss in accuracy was detected when using this approach as the cell heat balance could be closed within 5%, the level of accuracy typical of cell heat balance assessment using heat flux meter.

ABSTRACT: Despite many years of practical applications in mineral processing plants, the potential of column flotation has still not been fully exploited. The challenge in measuring some key variables is certainly an important contributing factor to this situation. Reliable online measurement of varibles, such as the froth depth, bias, gas hold-up, frother concentration, bubble surface area flux, and bubble size distribution, provides opportunities for the application of various advanced control strategies and real-time optimization based on an economic criterion. For several years, Université Laval’sLaboratoire d’observation et d’optimisation des procédés researchers have been working on these opportunities. This paper describes the most recent advances and current research trends.

"The history and analysis of a structurally complex open-pit rock slope displacement are described. The failure involved part of the only haulage access to a major ore zone. The ongoing movement was monitored using an electronic distance measuring device and a continuous electronic system specifically designed for the problem. A major fault, infilled with a thick clay gouge, and intersected by other structural features, resulted in the transfer of weight to a rock mass acting as a buttress in the lower regions. Movements were affected by blasting vibrations and ground-water conditions. Remedial measures included limiting blasting levels and lowering the water table, following which mining was successfully resumed in the area.IntroductionBrenda Mines is situated in a mountainous region of the southern interior of British Columbia; the location is indicated on Figure 1 . The elevation is approximately 5000 ft , giving a climate typical of more northern areas. Temperatures vary from -30°C to + 30°C. A snowfall level of 400-800 cm is experienced from November to April. During the spring, a heavy runoff period occurs, increasing the pumping rate in the pit from a nominal 50* gal/min to 2000 gal/min.The orebody occurs in a fractured Jurassic rock mass referred to as the Brenda Stock; it is approximately 3000 ft in diameter and 1000 ft deep. The Brenda Stock was intruded into the Upper Triassic Nicola Group tuffs, breccias and argillites. Mineralization occurred in several stages in a relatively homogeneous quartz diorite host rock. Shearing, faulting and jointing occured later in many stages, producing mineralized clay gouge zones up to several feet in thickness'> , These gouge zones have a major effect on the stability of the pit walls.The structural geology of the pit walls is otherwise relatively simple. Figure 2 is a conventional pole diagram indicating the orientation of the rock structural systems which are present. The major system has an average dip of approximately 70 degrees to the south and strikes approximately east /west , it is not undercu t by the pit slope. Figure 3 is a photograph of part of the North wall on which this system is indicated.The basic pit design consists of a working bench height of 50 ft, with a final wall height of 100 ft between berm s and a 100-ft-wide berm every second lift. Combined with a local face slope of 50-70 degrees, the resulting wall slope, not including haulage roads, is 45 degrees. Figures 4 and 5 are generalized plans and sectional views of the pit."

"An attempt to review the recent literature on comminution reveals at once that the subject has many ramifications and that the applications are so diverse that there are very few general statements which can be made.It. seems reasonable to start classification on the basis of size of material as Input to the comminution process. However, we find that this can only be done in a very imprecise manner.The initial step of breaking rock from its natural state of very large pieces in geological formations into sizes suitable for processing is accomplished by blasting. This step in the process has not been ex-amined in this project except to note that great changes have been made during the last decade or so in the explosives used, and in the method of handling them. We should determine what effect changes in mining methods can have on the need for crushing.The second step in the process is usually primary crushing, performed by gyratory or jaw crushers. The largest chunk which can be fed to a jaw crusher depends on the size of the machine, and should be larger than the largest fragment produced in the miring process. It is obvious that the larger the crusher, the less care required in mining to en¬sure the absence of rocks too large to be crushed. The optimum size of crusher to minimize overall cost of mining and reduction is not at all obvious, and no information on this point has come to light in this investigation.It is rather generally accepted that size reduction is most efficiently done in small stages, and that different machines have different opti¬mum size ranges of feed. For example, crushers are preferred for sizes above about 1"", rod mills for the range between 1"" and 0.1"", ball mills are preferred from 0.1""down to perhaps 10 microns, and vibratory mills, or jet mills, below 10 microns."
