The alluvial diamond deposit in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia which became to be known as the Bow River Diamond Mine was discovered in 1982 by joint venture partners Freeport of Australia Inc and Gem Exploration and Minerals Ltd. Mining commenced in 1987. This paper describes the exploration programs and results from discovery to commencement of mining and reviews the public reporting of this process in the light of 1992 Ore Reserves Code (JORC, 1992). This case study illustrates the difficulties involved in resource estimation of alluvial diamond deposits. The study also shows that current reporting standards were, to a large extent, adhered to a full ten years before the diamond reporting section to the Code was formulated.

The conventional ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) loader utilises a pneumatic system to control the flow of ANFO (via rotary actuator/ball valve) and air (via an auxiliary air valve). This system, though relatively simple and reliable, has several drawbacks with respect to ease of control and level of automation. In this paper, a radio frequency (RF) remote control for explosives charging is discussed. The system design incorporates electric solenoid valves to control the rotary actuator and the auxiliary air valve. All operations associated with explosives charging are selectable at the remote and are completed according to a modifiable time sequence. This allows the following charging sequence to be reduced to a single momentary application of the remote:removal of water from the hole prior to charging with ANFO; charging of the hole for a preset but adjustable period of time; and removal of the remaining ANFO from the ANFO hose. A specially developed remote switch allows the operator to maintain two-handed control of the ANFO hose whilst achieving full control of the charge-up process. Failsafe electronic architecture is incorporated into the systemÆs design to increase safety to the highest level. Should the RF remote control fail, a wired remote is included in the system to allow for the charging process to continue, albeit at a reduced level of control. The application of the RF remote control system in an underground explosives charging operation minimises and/or eliminates many problems associated with the use of the conventional charging system. These include: the wet-hole problem, trip and entanglement hazards, air embolism and the two-man loader control requirement. The developed remote control unit proved to be effective at removing water from wet holes leading to increased face advance per drilling operation. It proved to be economically feasible, allowed for an increase in systemÆs dependability and safety factor and for a truly one-man operation which resulted in reduced manpower.

All systems can be divided into a series of subprocesses. Conventional management and design practices focus on the optimisation of these system components. However, the interaction between subprocesses means that improvements made to the individual components do not necessarily translate into total system performance improvement.TSG Consulting advocates a ætotal integrated system approachÆ to understanding the behaviour and performance of complex interacting systems. In a constraint-based integrated set of processes, the instantaneous system capacity is limited by the subsystem component capacity that is the bottleneck at that point in time. Additionally, real world stochastic and dynamic influences tend to have knock-on effects across subsystem boundaries. This necessitates the requirement for simulation modelling to develop and validate solutions that are sufficiently robust to deliver sustainable outcomes. The key to maximising production is to understand the causes and effects the inherent variability has on component performance, subprocess performance and most importantly, the total integrated system performance. The correct use of simulation modelling techniques allows study teams to evaluate the relative merits of different capacity enhancement proposals. Put simply, when done well, simulation modelling provides a quantitative and rational process to enhance the knowledge and insight needed to make informed decisions.

Coal mining in the Bulli seam in the Southern Coalfield in New South Wales has experienced the dangers of outbursts of coal and gas. These incidents present a major risk to the safety of mine workers and consequently a threat to the overall viability of the mining operations. Since the occurrence of a major outburst incident in the South Bulli Colliery in 1991 involving three fatalities, the primary contributory factors associated with coal/gas outbursts in the Bulli coal seam have been identified and a strategy for the management of the outburst risk has been formulated by the cooperation of mine operators, mine workers and the Department of Mineral Resources. Utilisation of risk management techniques in combination with modern gas drainage technologies and geological control methods have led to the formation of this effective outburst management plan. Clause 15 of the Coal Mines (Underground) Regulation 1999 in NSW has made it mandatory in an area of outburst to carry out mining in accordance with a code or guidelines developed for mining in outburst prone areas (DMR, 1999). In this paper an outburst management system is discussed which was developed for collieries in the Southern Coalfield that brings together all the available information including past experiences and risk management techniques in a documented form in order to maximise safety of mine workers. It is concluded that since the introduction of the outburst risk management systems in the Southern Coalfield in 1994 considerable reduction in outburst incidences have been experienced.

In the first, bubbles begin to be evolved more or less rapidly from the lead, and in the second, which occurs at a higher temperature than the first, hydrogen and sulphur dioxide are evolved, free sulphur is liberated, and leadsulphate is formed. The complete life cycle of a production facility has many phases requiring many different skills and many different personalities. It is not unlike the life cycle of a person and many parallels can be drawn from it. I leave some of these analogous situations to your fertile minds. The author, having worked in operations, plant design, plant commissioning, marketing and many other interesting situations through the industry has drawn from this experience and examples given by many associates in the industry.The phases seen are as follows: Concept Studies û someone has a bright idea of how to make a dollar. Scope Studies û what possible processes/options that could make a dollar. Prefeasibility Study û the æviableÆ scope options are studied to develop feasible options. Feasibility study û defines the concepts that should be designed to make a viable project thus enabling financing and project commitment to be made. Detailed Design û an intermediate step that consolidates the inputs to give a robust plant that can be constructed.Construction û people can see what they thought was going to occur and start to understand the plant. Commissioning û the hand-over of æownershipÆ from the conceiverÆs to the operators. Operations û the ætoyÆ has become reality and money must be made. De-commissioning û the plant has seen out the useful life of the ore deposit, it now goes through a further process required by society.Across these phases of plant design run several countervailing management requirements that can influence the outcome of the plant design. Some of the management rigours that have to be applied to the various phases are as follows: costing basis of the various phases; operational and maintenance reviews; sustainable development; risk assessment; reliability reviews; equipment availability; commissioning time; and environmental review.This paper endeavours to awaken people to the phases that projects require for a successful outcome and the management rigour that has to be applied throughout the phases to ensure the correct intellectual horsepower is applied at the right time to ensure the best outcome.Many of you would be parents and realise this is not unlike the development of children, teenagers, adults, retirees and ongoing.

A variety of rockbolt designs and resin anchors are currently in use in underground mines. This paper identifies possible risk factors that may affect the intended performance of rockbolts. The paper also presents the outcome of a study on the variability of some aspects of fully encapsulated rockbolts undertaken across seven coal mines within the context of previous research findings on rockbolt anchorage performance.

A sustained eight-year major research effort has been undertaken in South Africa to develop integrated passive water treatment systems for the sustainable removal of sulfates, while simultaneously addressing the removal of metals and acidity. The research effort addressed the problem both at a fundamental science level and at the more empirical pilot plant level. Whereas there are numerous anaerobic sulfate reducing reactors in operation on mine waters that remove some sulfate together with metals and acidity, these are typically plagued by low sulfate removal efficiency and gradual reductions in overall reactor efficiency with time. The South African research effort has focused on understanding the fundamental microbiological and biochemical reactions that occur in anaerobic reactors filled with lignocellulosic material and subjected to high sulfate water. Hypotheses have been developed that differentiate the reactions occurring in such a reactor into groups that should be individually optimised and these hypotheses have been verified through rigorous laboratory and pilot scale studies. The results of this research are incorporated into a patented multi-stage integrated passive treatment system that is capable of sustained high rate removal of sulfates, metals and acidity.

Croesus Shaft is one of two operating shafts on North Kalgurli Mines Limited's Fimiston lease.At the cessation of gold mining in 1974, the workings at Croesus were allowed to flood. Large quantities of deslimed mill tailings used in filled stopes were washed into the shaft and surrounding drives, making re-access very difficult. The shaft has been desludged from the 9 level to the 15 level, and a loading pocket installed below the 14 level. A vacuum lift unit was installed underground to facilitate the removal of the slime and spillage.Stoping at Croesus was hampered by poor drainage, pumping, and shaft availability. These difficulties have been overcome by utilising an open stoping system for the relatively steep, narrow, high grade stopes. Open stoping has proved to be effective and economic.

HAPPENING to be in Cue recently the writer was unexpectedly called upon to make surveys of some diamond drill bores on the Big Bell mine on the Murchison goldfield. The owner of the mine Mr Herman Mandelstam. had brought such apparatus with himas he could lay his hands on. and no other was available without prohibitive delay.The usual method of making these surveys as is well known is by putting a glass tube half filled with gelatine or glue in a melted state down the hole with a small magnet freely suspended in the glue and having it there till the glue sets solid. When this tubeis withdrawn (its depth down the bore being noted) the bearing and inclination of the borehole at this particular point can be read - the bearing by the compass and the inclination by the angle between the tube and the surface of the glue which of course ishorizontal. By taking a number of these observations according to the degree of accuracy required the course of the bore can be fairly accurately plotted.In dealing with dry holes there is little trouble but when the holes are full of water great difficulty is experienced. In the case in point the first observation was made in water 300 ft. deep, corresponding to a pressure of 130 lb. per sq. in. The tube containing the gelatine and glue (a mixture was used) was found, when hauled to the surface, to be completely filled with a weak mixture of water, gelatine, and glue and there was no horizontal surface from which to measure the angle of inclination of the bore. The water had been forced through the corks and sealing wax with which the tube had been closed. After several attempts it became obvious that no method available would keep the water from getting into the air-space in the tube, and to a pressure-proof metal container was impossible, nothing remained but to do away with the air-space and this was accomplished by using two liquids of different specific gravity - mercury and melted glue. Future mineral processing developments will be of two types. There will be a continuation of the advances of the last 20 years including major increases in equipment capacities, the development of reliable on-line instrumenta- tion, the use of digital computers for automatic control, and the greatly expanded use of in-situ leaching techniques. However, there will also be a need for innovations as the industry faces a different set of problems to those involved in cost and extraction efficiency considerations. These new problems include those relating to energy usage, environmental pressures, and the further development of large low grade deposits and small, high grade metallurgic- ally complex deposits. Present technology does not appear adequate to solve many of these new demands. New treat- ment concepts will be required, and the immediate outlook in this regard is not encouraging. A major research and development task in mineral processing over the next 20 years will be to seek out new ideas and develop them, and this must be pursued with imagination and determination. Both the continuation of the present research pro- grammes and the development of new methods will require a steady supply of highly qualified technical personnel. These people are not being produced in the numbers required, and this situation must be urgently rectified.

Geologists employed by Metals Exploration Pty. Ltd. discovered nickel enrichment at Greenvale, 180 kilometres West of Townsville, in 1967. Subsequent drilling proved an ore body containing 45 million dry tonnes of ore containing an average of 1.5% nickel and 0.11% cobalt. The Freeport Minerals Company, who had experience in treating lateritic nickel ore, were invited to participate in development of the ore body. This resulted in the formation of the operating company Queensland Nickel Pty. Ltd., jointly owned by Freeport Queensland Nickel Inc. and Metals Exploration Queensland Pty. Ltd. With the completion of successful pilot plant testing of Greenvale ore at the Freeport research facilities at Belle Chasse, Louisiana, a treatment plant was constructed at Yabulu, 24 kilometres North West of Townsville. A 225 kilometre railway line was built connecting the Greenvale Mine and Yabulu Treatment Plant. The ore reduction and ammonia/ammonium carbonate leaching flowsheet is similar to that constructed and operated by the Freeport Minerals Company during World War II at Nicaro, Cuba. Paddington processing plant is located approximately 30 km north of Kalgoorlie on the Menzies Highway and is owned by Placer Dome Asia Pacific. First mining was from the Paddington Pit, but in subsequent years the plant has had a history of treating ores from a large number of sources, and has used several different methods to reconcile mining and mill production. Reconciliations are necessary to keep a check on the quality control of mining and grade control processÆs. There is a need to be able to identify and resolve issues that will affect the profitability of the organisation quickly. They are also used to check the quality of the resource/reserve statements, and allow the accurate and timely payment of royalties to stakeholders. During the formation of the Kalgoorlie West operations when Delta Gold Limited and Goldfields Limited merged in 2001, the complexity of reconciliations increased dramatically. The expansion of the scope of reconciliations to include two mills, four underground mines and seven open pits, and ore from one deposit to both mills meant that a revised strategy was essential. A variety of issues have arisen over the years with discrepancies occurring when reconciling both tonnes and grade. There are many ways to approach reconciliations, and in recent times these philosophies have been widely debated on site. A consistent and logical approach that takes into account many different sources of ore, as well as different methods of delivery to the Run of Mine stockpiles is therefore necessary. This would standardise the different approaches taken by the various operations that combined to form Kalgoorlie west. The new method reconciles mill production back to the individual ore sources, and produces reconciled-mined tonnes and grade based on the mill throughput and the change in stockpiles. There will generally be a small discrepancy between the claimed mined tonnes produced (and grades) and the mill production. This needs to be highlighted to the operations concerned if it considered unacceptably large. Paddington mill over the last few years has had up to ten sources of ore each year, and up to 15 different stockpiles being processed during each month from those various pits. This combined with the need for a blended oxide/fresh feed, whilst striving to deliver a consistent (grade and hardness) product to the mill, has meant that reconciliations have been very difficult.

During the last fifteen years there has been a marked change in the demand and supply patterns of coking coal. The world demand, predominantly Japan, has increased from 23 million tonnes of world export/import coal in 1960 to an expected total of at least 100 million tonnes by 1975. In the last ten years Australia has been the main beneficiary in the growth of the export coal trade. This has been brought about by its proximity to Japan and its large econ- omically mineable reserves of coking coal. A feature of the recent coal development in Australia has been the requirement of companies in new areas to provide massive capital for infrastructure costs. The ability of the Australian coal industry to retain a large share of the world export market depends to a large extent on reasonable costs to transport coal from mine to the market place. In some areas of Australia this means that railway lines, loading and unloading facilities, and ports will have to be up-dated at substantial costs. On the long haul to Europe the recent increases in the prices of bunker fuel have made the price of coal less competitive when compared with sources

At BHP Billiton Iron Ore Newman Joint Venture (NJV) ore is railed from four separate mine operations in the Newman area to Port Hedland, where the ore is screened, crushed and blended to produce lump and fines NJV products. Each mineÆs grade varies separately, so it is important that a centralised system is in place to control the overall blend and ensure that the products meet customer expectations. It is important that grade- related decisions are built into the normal production process and have minimal impact on production rates. A continuous stockpile management system (CSMS) covering the whole NJV production process is used to generate the daily crushing schedule, taking into account all currently available ore sources. Innovative additions to the CSMS provide more accurate information to support decision making by the mine schedulers; for example, blasthole estimates are continually adjusted for bias compared to crusher and port rake grades; lump-fines (L-F) grade split and beneficiation plant upgrade algorithms are updated on a continuous basis, and the dilution effect, which impacts on reported port rake grades, is removed.

Coal mining in the Illawarra commenced in 1848. By the early twentieth century mining operations were spread over quite a distance along the coast centred on Wollongong. By this time there were already numerous tunnel mines and one shaft mine. Coal was first reported in Illawarra by Lieutenant Flinders on a voyage of exploration, southerly along the coast from Sydney in 1796. Because of the topography, particularly the escarpment and the narrowness of the coastal plain, access from Sydney was not easy by land and the normal access was by sea. It was not until some coastal areas had been developed for agricultural purposes that the mining of the seams on the South Coast commenced for the supp- ly of fuel. The most important mines in the early nineteenth century were Bulli and Osborne Wallsend. In general, coal was won from the tunnel mines and was transported directly, usually by tramway, to the nearest shipping point. Considerable hardship attended the earliest attempts at mining coal in regard to materials for mining and the way of life of the miners in the vicinity of the mines. With the growth of production and the installation of coke ovens at some mines the area, hitherto virgin bush- land, began to take on a more industrialised appearance. A new process is described which allows for direct recovery of base and precious metals (Au and PGMÆs) from sulphide concentrates or other feedstocks. The process was developed initially for application to ores or concentrates that are too low-grade for economic treatment by the conventional smelting and matte leaching process (for PGMÆs). It is now believed that the process may be widely applicable to a variety of materials including PGM concentrates containing high amounts of chromium or magnesium. Operating conditions have been identified under which gold, the PGMÆs and the base metals dissolve simultaneously in a pressure leaching autoclave. The product of this leaching process can then be treated by one of several flowsheets, of which the preferred will likely involve solid/liquid separation, followed by precipitation (or adsorption on activated carbon) of gold and the PGMÆs, followed by copper solvent extraction/electrowinning. Depending on the concentrations of nickel and cobalt, the copper raffinate would either be partially recycled to the autoclave to allow Ni/Co concentrations to build up, or it would proceed directly to a Ni/Co refinery. In 1984, work was started to determine the viability of heap leaching silver-containing waste dumps from Cerro Rico near Potosi - Bolivia, at an elevation of 4300 meters (14 100 ft.). The result today is an unusual heap leach utilizing fine crushing, grinding, and agglomeration to process 1000 tonnes per day of ore containing 200 g/tonne silver. The unique metallurgi- cal, economic, and political factors will be discussed which led to the decision to build a heap leach rather than a conventional agitation leach plant. Capital and operating costs will be given along with some of the uncommon process design and equipment problems encountered while developing the operation.
