This paper examines the broader implications of recent and ongoing changes in mineral resource managementå and reporting practices and the impact that these might have on mining companies. It is likely that an International Reporting Code will be developed in the near future, based on a number of National codes produced in recent years. However, this is only part of the reporting story, as an International Code brings with it a range of further issues to resolve. For the Code to be effective, there needs to be international recognition and perhaps licensing of Competent Persons and an expanded base of sponsoring professional bodies. Also, in an increasingly global business, shareholders, regulators and other interested parties need to know and understand the general processes involved in resource and reserve estimation and reporting in order to recognise companies that maintain the highest standards. There is a current trend towards greater scrutiny of company performance in a range of areas under the banner of corporate governance, and many changes are happening that will place greater disclosure burdens on all companies in the future. Good corporate governance means management of company assets for the benefit of the stakeholders. For a mining company, there is no greater asset than its mineral resources and reserves and directors are just as responsible for effective management of their mineral resources as they are for financial good practice. The paper looks at the relevance of corporate governance principles to mineral resource management and the changes that this could bring to the way that companies deal with regulators, shareholders, financiers and others. Finally, increased scrutiny and further regulation inevitably means greater effort by the industry and higher costs. Despite this the author believes that there are substantial offsetting benefits to be gained by companies prepared to take the initiative in improving resource management practices and communicating these improvements to shareholders. In order to achieve the benefits however, the industry needs to fully engage in the changes that are taking place û setting its own standards and working with the regulators rather than sitting back and being legislated against. Mineral resource reporting provides a good model of how this process can work and there will be other opportunities in the coming years as the industry seeks to develop best practice in mineral resource management. This paper presents the experimental results on the effects of slurry Theology on ultra-fine grinding by a stirred ball mill. The amount of dispersant, slurry density and the particle size were selected as the parameters. The viscosity of dolomite-water slurry was measured by rotational viscometers. It was found that by adding enough dispersant, the effect of particle size from 1 to 10 pm on the slurry theology could be eliminated, but a strong effect of slurry density (tested for a range of 65 to 75 wt per cent) remained. The use of dispersant transformed the slurry from Bingham plastic flow to dilatant flow, which reduced the yield stress to zero, but increased the viscosity at higher shear rates. During the milling process, the viscosity was stable. The yield stress, however, increased suddenly from zero after a certain milling time. The mill operation stopped at the point where the yield stress increased due to poor slurry fluidity. The milling efficiency was found to be higher at a lower amount of dispersant addition or a lower slurry density within the experimental limits.

In order to formulate appropriate and useful education and training policies and practices, it is crucial to firstly consider the demographic environment of our workforce-and the direction in which it is (known to be) heading. We can predict with a degree of certainty, that the role and influence of training on the future survivability of organisations will- become increasingly critical. This will be particularly relevant for those industries and organisations which are technologically based. The ad-hoc use of training is and, will no longer be appropriate. Organisations must move toward the on-going use of a dynamic education and training strategy based on an effective staff development programme, which meets the short and medium term needs of the organisation. The Technisearch approach is based on maximizing the efficacy of training and learning. The package provides.a total service to meet clients training needs using educational techniques geared to adult learning. it stresses the importance of ongoing research into industrial adult training and its effectiveness in improving skills and productivity. Current research on roles of supervisors in the Australian workplace and the development of the Supervisory Behaviour Questionnaire. (SBQ) indicates the need for a proper framework within which the objectives of training can be addressed.

GRD Macraes Limited, owners and operators of the Macraes and Reefton Gold Project in New Zealand, have taken up the challenge of sustainably producing in excess of 300 000 ounces per annum within five years.GRD Macraes is well on target to achieve the forecast of 170 000 oz at a cash cost of A$310/oz for the 2002 financial year, with our Reefton operation set to add about 70 000 û 80 000 ounces per annum from late 2003.At the end of 2001 GRD Macraes Limited had resources of 5.5 million oz with reserves at 2.8 million oz.

Smaller deposits of high grade chalcopyrite or the concentrates of low grade and complex copper bearing ores, can be subjected to extraction processes other than smelting and converting. Low temperature chlorination and segregation processes are among those mentioned in the literature. In the present work, extraction of copper from a Brazilian chalcopyrite concentrate by slurry chlorination with chlorine gas at room temperature, dry chlorination by chlorine gas in the temperature range of 350 to 450¦C and segregation roasting of the calcined concentrate in the temperature range of 650 to 800¦C have been carried out. The effect of several experimental variables on the extraction of copper has been discussed in all these cases. Under optimum experimental conditions, 100 per cent Cu extraction was possible by either slurry or dry chlorination processes and around 86 per cent Cu by segregation roasting. For all the three cases, possible methods have been suggested to trial the studies on a pilot scale to assess their technoeconomic viability.

Maintenance management improvement projects were undertaken at several BHP Collieries Division mines pursuing.the objective of achieving better structured maintenance procedures. Efficiently structured maintenance and optimum asset use are interdependent and productivity and computer models assist towards that objective. Definition of aspects of maintenance and analysis of the nature of equipment and materials, workloads and tasks, lead to more effective planning and scheduling of maintenance. The quality, standards and procedures of records must be suitable and adequate for storage and future retrieval. Total Quality Control initiatives and improvement projects even extend into spheres of customer/supplier relationships and problem solving teams as well as the more recognisable standards of management and performance factors in maintenance. All such factors contribute to a Maintenance Management Matrix to provide a better structured approach to economic maintenance management in the capital intensive coal mining industry.

Peraluminous metamorphic rocks may form from a variety of protoliths by a range of processes. Stratiform bodies of such rocks are relatively common in the Precambrian, but less commonly, also occur in the Phanerozoic. The protoliths of such stratiform bodies may have been regionally deposited chamosite-rich sediments, with varying amounts of clastic component, or may have resulted from the in-situ depositional or diagenetic alteration of volcaniclastic sediments, ranging in composition from rhyolite to basaltic andesite.Stratiform peraluminous metasediments, especially those of low to medium metamorphic grade, and relatively iron rich, may be genetically associated with, or be the host rocks for, a variety of styles of mineralization, especially for the ores of An, Ag, Cu, Zn and Pb.

From a detailed combustion testing program and earlier experience with Leigh Creek coal, the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) gained a wide insight into the use of low rank coal fired boiler plant. This work is fundamental for the selection of boiler design parameters and other details which in turn determine the correct coal deposit selection for future power station development. In addition it gives boiler designers a good indication of the measures required to give reliable plant operation. Extrapolation from experience with existing plant, the designers main source of information, was not considered appropriate because of the lack of experience with similar coals. Brown coal beneficiation is also being assessed by ETSA in an attempt to improve the coal quality by the pretreatment of the raw coal prior to combustion in future coal.fired boilers. ETSA is also involved in the development of circulating fluid bed and gasification processes to determine whether these alternative processes are a more viable method of utilising the South Australian coals than pulverised fuel firing.

The products required by customers today have become far more complex and consequently more demanding to handle. And thereÆs the dilemma. Nowadays, people tend to stick to a trade for just a few years instead of for a lifetime, and this means that the customerÆs employees cannot be expected to get more than general knowledge of how to handle modern mining and construction equipment. To meet this challenge, major steps are being taken by suppliers to make their æmusclesÆ more user-friendly. Also the supplier is assuming a larger share of responsibility for the product including operators training, supply maintenance services and, in many cases, performance guarantees. In other words, the supplier is today supplying a function or an activity rather than just muscles. Some of the new generation drill rigs have been on the market for a few years and reliable experience has been collected and is addressed in this paper. Some of the information is well supported by figures while others are just statements from users of the rigs.

This paper addresses the actions of the Australian mining industry, its regulators and educational providers towards ensuring that a pool of competent mine managers is maintained in Australia and that mine management remains a desirable career path for future mining professionals. The Australian and global mining industries are experiencing an acute skills shortage. Mine managers, traditionally drawn from the ranks of mining engineers, are at the sharp end of this shortage. Exacerbating the shortage is a perception that a professional mine manager is not an attractive career option. This perception is influenced by the following forces which combine to make the role of a modern mine manager very demanding:legislative requirements for owners and managers to ensure (guarantee) the safety and health of employees; an increasing trend towards prosecution over exposure to risks to health and safety a need to be more aware and responsive to community and environment; financial, technical and æpeopleÆ pressures traditionally associated with the job of managing a mine; and mine management roles being filled by younger and less experienced professionals. Universities and other educational providers have the challenge of both ensuring that undergraduates are exposed to these issues during their study and continuing to promote mine management as a desirable career option. Anecdotal and statistical evidence indicates that young graduates are choosing and remaining in technical roles rather than taking on the challenge of mine management. Furthermore, it is suspected that the issues referred to above are contributing to the low retention rate of young professionals at mine sites. The challenges are not insurmountable, however. This paper reviews the initiatives of industry, the regulators and educational institutions in addressing these challenges. It includes a focus on:prosecution policies and their impacts, tertiary education program content and delivery modes, CPD initiatives of the Mine Managers Association of Australia, and alternative pathways for obtaining mine management qualifications.

Preliminary project evaluation is relevant to the evaluation process of the decision makers (or executives) prior to making the critical business choices. Important to the assessment is an integrated sensitivity, scenario and risk analysis at every stage of a mining project. This should include the evaluation of different options taking into account uncertainties. Construction of interactive financial computer models where each element is functionally integrated into a fully integrated life-cycle allows rapid and automatic study of the sensitivity of each element through changes in the value of an input. The scenario analysis is the effect of changing more than one input at a time, organised through scenarios in a decision tree. Risk analysis is an integrated analysis of the effect of all uncertainties of the parameters, using Monte Carlo simulation. Key to the asset decisions process is that the decision maker is provided with the essential integrated decision information. We have clustered this information into several scenario groups. Within each group, two levels of uncertain information are distinguished: discrete scenarios critical for the decisions; and remaining uncertainty within the scenario (risk analysis) which can be modelled by continuous probability density functions (pdfÆs). For an asset, the relevant scenarios in each group and the associated continuous pdfÆs need to be defined. When the scenario groups and associated pdfÆs have been defined for the asset, the decision process can be started by structuring the different scenario groups in a Scenario Tree. A Scenario Tree contains decision and end nodes. Each end node corresponds to a completely defined mine project or asset model. The calculations for each end node result in a set of stochastic realisations for the reserves, production forecast, cash flow, and profitability indicators (NPV, IRR, DPR). Thus, a deterministic and fully probabilistic multi-commodity analysis tool is provided to investigate the sensitivity and robustness of decisions.

At the Faculty of Mining and Petroleum Engineering, the Department of Raw Materials Technology, a mathematical model has been developed to predict the porosity distribution in an uniform jig bed. If the porosity distribution in an uniform jig bed is known, it is possible to correlate this to the settling velocity of particles with a density different from the density of the bed grains and thus model the stratification in a jig. For measuring the porosity distribution in the jig bed a method has been developed based on light absorption techniques.

This brief overview of the history of Brown Coal mining in Victoria is a luncheon presentation -I do not intend to make it indigestible with extensive listings of resources or production. There is a vast pantry of collated historical records and of vari- ous predictive studies available for the enquired with a hearty digestion. A gourmet collation is provided in The Aus IMM Monograph No 11 published in 1984 entitled "Victoria's Brown Coal-A HUGE FORTUNE IN CHANCERY", currently still on offer by the Institute and available at a bargain price in the foyer at this conference. Monograph No 11 also provides a feast of excellent references on the theme of Victorian Brown Coal assembled by the several contributors. In contrast, my presentation paper is a fast-food service, extracts from the printed paper only-you have no choice-you "get what you get" and in small quantity. The Obuasi Mine in Ghana, West Africa is the largest producing gold mine in Africa, outside South Africa. The mine has changed from a mine producing from narrow vein, high grade quartz orebodies to a mine producing from wide, lower grade sulphide rebodies. Traditionally mining methods were cut and fill and sublevel caving. Now the preferred stoping methodologyis long hole open stoping. Transverse or longitudinal methods are both used, dependent on the orebody characteristics. The change has been technically, socially, economically and politicallychallenging and at times has tested the abilities of those responsible for the operation of the mine. However, the benefits have been many. Safety has improved significantly, ounces from underground have doubled. Productivityhas doubled and underground unit costs have reduced bya third. These achievements have allowed the Obuasi mine to staycompetiti ve in this time of falling gold price. During 1999 and 2000 a full review of the mining and processing operations was undertaken, and as a result, the mine is now in a phase of restructure. Efforts are being made across the mine to improve efficiencies and to reduce costs. The future for the Obuasi Mine is an exciting one.

These vary from complex textural problems in the lead-zinc concentrator and their subsequent effect on grinding and flotation to scheduling of converter slag treatment in a chalcopyrite concentrator. Structure is the most important control on the location of hematite deposits in the Hamersley Province in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Unravelling the structural history of mineralised areas, however, is complex because the Province underwent three orogenic events, and three regional extension events followed the main episodes of compression. Steeply E to ENE dipping normal faults immediately predated deposition of the Beasley Quartzite of the lower Wyloo Group after the Ophthalmian Orogeny. Steeply NE and SW-S dipping normal faults predated deposition of the McGrath formation of the middle Wyloo Group, following the Panhandle Orogeny. The resulting interpreted rift was subsequently reactivated and tilted during the Capricorn Orogeny. Late NE trending normal faults are confined to the eastern half of the Province. High-grade hematite deposits occur in rocks that range from intensely folded (Mt Whaleback, Giles Mini) to rocks with less, or only little deformation (Paraburdoo, Channar), suggesting that folding had at best limited influence on ore genesis. In contrast, extensional normal faults are always associated with high-grade hematite deposits, and in particular faults that link the underlying dolomites of the Wittenoom Formation with the overlying iron formation, thus providing a pathway for mineralising alkaline fluids.

Consent to develop and operate a new coal mine in New South Wales (NSW) will be conditional upon a number of environmental controls. In NSW, applications for any new major development associated with coal mining are determined by the Minister for Planning and Environment. The environ- mental conditions placed on the development consent, the coal mining lease and the approvals, and licences under the pollution control legislation amount to a substantial component of any new project's commissioning considerations. The nature, scale and location of projects and the principles of pollution control on which conditions of State Pollution Control Commission (SPCC) approvals are based have a considerable influence on project planning. The design, construction and operation of coal mines in NSW has been progressively modified over the past 15 years, to incorporate increasingly stringent requirements for environmental management. These requirements are in turn, a reflection of a greater community demand for environmental protection.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. It is important to understand skarn-porphyry transitions in order to use exposed skarns to look for associated and potentially larger porphyries. For such purposes, a good start is to understand the transition between porphyry and skarn in known deposits. In this contribution, we report the transition at Antamina, Peru, where skarns occur in and around a Miocene complex comprised of more than seven porphyritic intrusions. There are three types of skarn-porphyry relationships. The earliest intrusive phase, P1A, contains both endoskarn and porphyry-style quartz veins with secondary biotite halos. The porphyry quartz veins and endoskarns formed at the same time. Locally, the intrusion contains only endoskarn without porphyry quartz veins and is surrounded by exoskarns in carbonate wall rocks. In the third scenario, later porphyry (P2) intruding into P1A porphyry and skarns related to P1A contains abundant granular quartz veins and secondary biotite alteration but does not have significant endoskarn. The granular quartz veins also extend into earlier P1A skarns. The scarcity of endoskarn associated with P2 is related to the supply of Ca. The earliest P1A intrusion intruded into carbonates that supplied abundant Ca, therefore both endoskarns and exoskarns formed. In contrast, where the wall rocks of the later P2 intrusion are P1A or skarn related to P1A, there was little free Ca, therefore only porphyry-style quartz veins formed.CITATION:Chang, Z, Mrozek, S A, Meinert, L D and Windle, S, 2015. Computer simulation is a well-accepted tool for modelling the behaviour of large or complex operating systems. Less common is the use of simulation as a design aid, but FluorÆs simulation group regularly applies discrete and continuous simulation models to assist with optimisation and risk management in a wide variety of mining, mineral processing and logistics applications. To demonstrate the wide applicability of simulation modelling as a design aid, this paper describes three case examples from FluorÆs recent work that cover both discrete and continuous operations.
