Roasting of zinc concentrate at the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, (E.Z.), is carried out in two fluid bed roasters capable of treating 450000 tonne/yr, or sufficient for the output of 220000 tonne of salable zinc. The furnaces were constructed by Lurgi, Australia, to the basic design developed by Vieille Montagne Company of Balen, Belgium. The advantages of fluid bed roasting include a higher metallurgical efficiency in sulphur oxidation from a feed which does not require any pre-grinding, mechanical reliabil- ity through the absence of any moving parts within the furnace and the capability of being scaled up to a large unit.

The Rock Mass Rating (RMR) and Rock Mass Strength (RMS) classification systems for jointed rock masses are briefly reviewed, with particular reference to their use in slope stability studies. A correlation is provided between the results obtained from the two classifications and an equation is presented tentatively defining the RMR value for long-term stable slope angles. The validity of the equation is discussed in general terms in the context of slope stability problems commonly encountered in Western Australian open pit gold mines.

The effect of temperature, time and SO2 concentration in the atmosphate have been studied for a complex Pb-Zn concentrate, which contained four sulphides and some organic material, in order to determine optimum roasting conditions. Under static roasting conditions virtually complete sulphation was achieved after roasting at 650¦C.2 hours in 10% SO2 in air. Both zinc ferrite and zinc silicate were observed to form early in the roasting, but continued exposure to SO2 -containing gases caused decomposition of these as the roasting time increased. Water and acid solubilities of iron, silica, calcium, magnesium and aluminium in the calcine were determined, as a function of roasting time, temperature and atmosphere composition.

The story of the rise, progress, and development of our modern railway system is a long but an exceedingly interesting one. The phases it has passed through, the discussions that have arisen from time to time on the most economic modes of construction and working, and the final result these various discussions have led to, are full of importance and interest to the engineer. It is not my intention to deal historically with the subject. I desire simply to speak to the requirements of the hour in Australia. It will not be disputed, I think, that these colonies have reached a point in railway construction and management when, if additional lines to any extent are still to be built, a different principle must be adopted. There are yet large tracts and areas of country to be tapped by the rail and the locomotive, which for years to come must remain untouched if the same expensive gauges and modes of construction are continued. We have yet to see clearly the necessity of introducing a system of light lines that will pay their own way and at the same time augment the traffic of our main lines. This question really no longer remains an unsolved problem. It lies, in a few words, in the acceptance of the, narrowest gauge and the simplest mode of construction that can constitute a pacticable railway. I fear it is hopeless to suggest that private companies should be legally permitted to construct such lines. It seems as if it were next to impossible to move official authorities to enter upon the construction of lines on this principle. It is, all the same an undoubted fact that if private companies could obtain Acts of Parliament, that in several of the colonies a new impetus would be given to railway construction.I may point out that not only has the principle of narrow gauge light railways been adopted in India but private companies are obtaining power to build them. Outside of :England many narrow gauge lines have been made, and in France, Denmark, Italy, and Sweden they have been highly successful.

A new understanding of the formation of black organic shales in the Illinois Basin has contributed to insights on how to produce methane from these complex reservoirs. These shales are far from simple shallow derived sediments but are in fact the result of a complex series of events which include the intermixing of volcanic detritus and the marine organic material, onlap successions and low energy turbiditic intraformational activity. This has led to a review of the commercial significance of the mid Devonian shales in the sedimentary basins of the eastern half of the USA. These shale sequences are also characterised by very little contribution from the underlying Lower Palaeozoic carbonate formations. The later diagenetic influences and the interaction of sea floor bacteria especially since the mid Devonian have lead to the creation of a major source of energy in the form of methane. Vast areas measured in 1000s of square kilometres are known to contain biogenically derived natural gas as methane. However, this vast resource produces very little gas due to abundance of illite which acts as a major adsorption mineral and creates a refractory situation where though there is abundant gas present the rate of release is clearly subeconomic. This paper will present the results of recent laboratory trials which have indicated that it is possible to create microfracturing using bacteria within the gas bearing shale sequence and also restart the methanogenesis process. As most coal bed methane environments have similar organically derived shales in direct relationship to the coal beds themselves then this paper has ramifications for this industry as well.

Exploration requires substantial capital, and is an extremely risky business (only 1 in 100 prospects ever becomes a mine). The average lead time, that is the time between discovery and production, varies from around two years for a gold mine, to 15 years for a lead/zinc mine. Since it takes years to find, prove and develop most ore bodies, exploration must be carried out years ahead of the depletion of existing deposits. Investors in exploration are exposed to risk for long periods before knowing whether they will receive a return on the funds invested. The risk, high-cost, uncertainty and long lead times involved in exploration make it an aspect of commerce that most managers and investors find difficult to rationalise or understand. Nevertheless, it is a given that the long-term survival of the mining sector depends on discovery of new mineral deposits, however the immediacy of the need to find or acquire new mineral deposits in order to compete and prosper in the industry is less well understood. This paper examines the commercial realities which underlie exploration for new mineral deposits. The first and foremost reason for exploration is to maintain or increase depleting ore reserves which are the asset base of mining, but there are other compelling commercial reasons for exploring, and these are: to maintain return on investment, to achieve growth or create wealth through discoveries which lead tonew mining ventures, to remain competitive in the industry, to diversify, and to control raw material source for mineral processing and/ormarketing ventures. Exploration is necessary for survival of the industry, and also for survival of organisations competing in the industry. The organisations which discover the best orebodies are in the best position to compete, and mining organisations which fail to find or acquire new mineral deposits rapidly become uncompetitive and unable to maintain return on shareholdersÆ investment.

Ore reserves at the Kambalda Nickel Operations of Western Mining Corporation are estimated using the polygonal method for calculating areas of influence of drillholes. All raw assay and survey data are stored on one disk pack on the Company's CYBER 73 computer located in Perth, about 600 km from Kambalda. The initial step involving the computer is to search all assay data and calculate all potential ore-grade intersections. As the orebodies are thin, structurally complex and many are in close stratigraphic proximity, the selection of intersections which have the best grade over at least a minimum mining width involves complex logic. The orientation of an ore surface at each drill intersection point and a zone code are added to each intersection by the geologist from geological plans prepared for each ore surface. The orientation data together with downhole surveys enables the calculation of inter- section true widths and the zone code links each recalculated intersection to the appropriate ore surface.

Projected cooling requirements for ERPM led to the first proposals for the large- scale use of ice for mine cooling in the early 1980's. Following successful research into ice conveying and ice melting a large ice plant was commissioned at Harmony in 1985 and a much larger 6000 ton per day plant is presently under construction at ERPM. A brief description of the mining project is given, followed by general descriptions of the surface ice plants and the ice conveying system, the systems for using the ice for mine cooling, and the control of the whole ice cooling System.

In the first half of this century a mining industry was developed in Indonesia under Dutch colonial rule. World War II and the subsequent struggle for independence resulted in the destruction of most of the infras- tructure and much of the data. After independence, restrictions on for- eign investment and internal turmoil prevented re-establishment of a viable mining industry until the formation of the present Government after 1965 and the enactment of sound laws in 1967 to encourage foreign investment. Rebirth of the mining industry was followed initially by slow growth, but in the 1980's, spurred by the worldwide interest in gold, Indonesia has become the focus of an intense exploration boom for gold and other precious metals. 103 Contracts of Work for gold have been awarded since 1985 with Australian companies being the most predominant. Since 1985 three new gold operations have been commissioned and another two are nearing completion. Several more are undergoing feasi- bility studies. There is reason to predict that Indonesian gold produc- tion will grow to place the country in the ranks of significant producers during the 1990's.

"In some lode-style gold deposits the geological (lithological) uncertainty may have similar economic significance as the grade uncertainty. In the absence of precise knowledge of the deposit geology, geological models of these types of deposits that are used to constrain spatially the estimated (or simulated) grade values may influence significantly the contained metal. Methods for assessing geological uncertainty quantitatively are rarely considered due to their perceived inability to consider exhaustive geological interpretations, and resulting models that often appear geologically unrealistic. Furthermore, should the lodes have been subjected to folding, or where the mineralisation continuity does not follow a planar orientation along strike or down dip, standard methods of variography and interpolation using linear vectors in space often do not provide a good representation of continuity. An alternative approach is to relate spatial samples from adjacent drill holes using an unfolding plane.The paper demonstrates conditional simulation of the geometry and gold grades of a folded lode-style deposit where:simulation of lode geometry considers explicitly the geologistÆs interpretation, andsimulation of gold grade values that consider explicitly the folded nature of the lodes.The results are contrasted to the traditional approach of linear vectors in real space for a single lode interpretation.CITATION:Richmond, A, 2012. The paper contains the publication of timber shapes recovered from the Burra Mines during open cut operations in the 1970s. The timber was in the process of being disposed of for fire wood. All timber shapes still in existence in September 1990 were drawn.The collection revealed a number of different types of caps and legs. There were also end plates and wall plates from what appeared to be a hanging sets of shaft timber.

As a number of underground fires have unfortunately happened in the Broken Hill mining district, the writer trusts that a paper dealing with such a subject may prove of interest. To simplify matters, the subject is classed under three mainheadings- I Origin of fires; II Methods of subduing them; III Precautions to minimize the risk of their occurrence.Underground fires may be started in three ways - arson, spontaneous combustion, or carelessness.With regard to the first-mentioned cause, direct evidence is usually lacking to prove that any fire has been caused maliciously; Though definite proof of spontaneous combustion having been the cause of a mine fire has not been brought forward, nevertheless it should be considered, especially in the case of sulphide ore bodies of a more or less friable nature. There is very little in Australian mining law that sets out the rights of mining tenement and exploration licence holders as against other parties who wish to carry out ground or aerial surveillance over those areas.There have already been several legal actions arising out of this lack, and more can be expected as the public places more rigorous constraints on corporate and individual behaviour. Field personnel, who are mainly fairly junior and less experienced, are entitled to some guidance from the minerals industry, guidance which up to now appears to have been either lacking or covering such a wide range of standards from corporation to corporation as to be virtually useless.Because each State writes its own laws there is no consistency, and the laws generally are lagging behind developments in the industry. In particular, the practice of granting mining tenements for sporadic exploration, a practice that is a leftover from much earlier mining law, has dotted the Australian continent with unattended and unmarked or poorly marked tenements that are difficult to find but confer on the holder prior rights to the minerals under them. Entry onto those areas in most jurisdictions is an offence and their existence compromises the efforts of regional explorers.This clearly unsatisfactory situation requires remedying, which is the purpose of these proposals. A more systematic approach to the granting of reconnaissance, regional and detailed exploration, mining, and retention rights will eliminate much of the problem. For the rest, a code of practice needs to be adopted as soon as possible.

The models are based on a simple index, TT which approxi- mates the rate of growth of the people's living standards. However, for application in the mining industry it is necessary to incorporate various parameters to account for the dynamic charges in the geological, mining and other technological conditions. Feasibility studies in the development of mining projects are fundamental to most investment decisions. It is important that the issues addressed and the degree of detail involved in feasibility studies are consistent with the investment decisions to be taken. Emphasis should be placed on a thorough analysis of critical project parameters prior to detailed investigations being undertaken into other activities which are not relevant to the decisions at hand. Therefore, the issues to be decided upon should be influenced significantly by the stage of development of the project and by the reliability of technical and financial information used in the study. Some of the more critical parameters of feasibility studies are commodity prices, inflation rates and discount rates. Advice is given on the selection of these inputs and also on their application in the feasibility study as the project progresses through its various development stages. Blasting is one of the available technologies to be employed in underground excavation systems. In many instances it can be the only technology which is suitable. The recent moves towards more mechanised working systems is resulting in a reduced awareness of new blasting practices and technologies on the part of many excavation engineers. Recent developments in blasting systems can be utilised to significantly improve operating efficiency, reduce total cycle times, better comply with regional environmental constraints and reduce the total cost of underground excavation. Blasting is and will remain, a very adaptable and exciting alternative which is far from boring.

For the past 45 years, the casting of refined lead ingots by The Broken Hill Asso- ciated Smelters Pty. Ltd. (B.H.A,S,) at Port Pirie has been mainly by use of manually operated rotary casting wheels of Newnam design. This style of operation was quite satisfactory as far as standard of product was concerned, but was manually intensive and a relatively high cost operation. With most other large scale lead producers already using automated-casting equipment, an investigation which commenced in 1966, progressed through stages of enquiry, design and development until the present plant commenced trial operations in late 1973, and fully operative in late 1974. While certain features of the plant are sed on overseas practices the plant was signed and built within Australia to BRAS ecifications. Over the last two years work has been undertaken within the Pasminco Metals - BHAS Zinc Plant to improve the efficiency and maintain the production capacity of the operation. The work has centred upon the installation of suitable process instrumentation to improve process control and the development of new unit operations to maintain control of the circuit water and sulphate balance. A key aspect of the new process instrumentation has been the development of an on-line analyser to monitor the total antimony concentration during zinc dust purification. As a result of changes made to the Zinc Plant in order to contain all effluent within the circuit, a problem developed with control of both the water and sulphate balance of the circuit. A new neutralisation plant to treat all cell house waste water so that it can be contained within the circuit has been developed and installed. In addition changes have been made to the existing circuit to control deliberately the circuit sulphate concentration by precipitation of sodium and potassium jarosite.

Patterns of successful metallic mineral discoveries in Australia are analysed for the last three decades. A trend towards more discoveries of poorly expressed and blind ore- bodies is evident and can be expected to continue. Discoveries using traditional and conceptual geological techniques have proportionally declined but are expected to continue at a significant level for a decade or so. Improvements in the quality and numbers of geological exploration models and in the quality of available basic geoscience data have aided successful discovery in recent years. Although some orebodies for the Year 2001 have already been found maintenance of a strong mineral inventory demands that more and better geological models are applied. Empirical models need to be improved by critical multi- disciplinary integrated studies of mineral occurrence at all scales. New models can and will be developed by various means. If application of these models is made with all the innovation, initiative and unorthodoxy that can be mustered then new discoveries will result. Greater attention to the surface expression of orebodies will also lead to new discoveries. Review and follow-up of old data in the light of new concepts will provide yet another discovery route.
