The production of copper by the Outokumpu direct blister process commenced in July 1988. The problems and incidents encountered in commissioning the main smelter equipment are outlined. Early difficulties were encountered in process control, hot metal handling, dust buildup in the off gas handling equipment, waste heat boiler tube failures, foam over of hot metal into the waste heat boiler and failure of ancilliary equipment.

This paper deals with innovative techniques that have enabled personal computers to be used on the mine site to define, develop and manage an ore body resource, while being aware of the consequences to the environment. The same set of personal computer tools that are used for resource estimation, once the province of expensive workstations, can also be used by geologists, mining engineers, surveyors and environmentalists, in managing the whole mining process, including production, grade control, monthly reconciliation and stockpile management through to tailings the management, mine rehabilitation and the due diligence process of mine closure.

The Murray Basin is known to contain major deposits of heavy mineral sands and intensive exploration for new deposits is being conducted in Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales. The western Basin was well served in the Pliocene and Early Pleistocene by a variety of appropriate sediment sources, and potential coastal traps. Immature, fluvially-sourced sediments forming the Pliocene coastal complex of the Marmon-Jabuk Range in South Australia are part of a marginal marine assemblage containing a suite of economically important heavy minerals that include ihnenite, zircon, rutile and tourmaline. From a consideration of Pliocene palaeogeography and coastal dynamics, specific targets where concentrating processes are likely to have operated are identified in the South Australian portion of the Murray Basin. Such palaeo-environments include the down-drift, littoral zone of discrete foredunes or coastal barriers, the source area for transgressive dune complexes, tombolo facies, and intertidal shoals and sandbanks. Similar coastal processes are recognised for a preserved Early Pleistocene barrier complex.

The known coal resources of South Australia are either of poor quality, or expensive to extract, or both. Export quality coal occurs only at great depth in the remote north of the State; the balance of the State's coal resources are suitable only for local electricity generation. Currently there is only one coal mine in the State, at Leigh Creek. This provides fuel for approximately 34% of the State's electricity generation, the balance being fuelled by natural gas. In the near future, new fuel sources must be developed to augment diminishing supplies of natural gas, and to cater for increasing demands for electricity. The South Australian Government has determined that future electricity generation will be based on the combustion of local coals. The geological and geographical environment of the known coal deposits and the quality of these coals are such that the most up to date and innovative technology must be applied to both extraction and combustion processes. The Government, the Electricity Trust of South Australia, and several Australian and overseas companies have embarked on an extensive research and development programme to ensure that these otherwise useless resources can be developed to the benefit of the State.

The Bureau of Mines used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas to evaluate the effectiveness of gob ventilation and/or sealing practices at three coal mines, each having different problems associated with their mined- out areas. The purpose of these ventilation studies was to better understand whether current techniques employed for ventilation or sealing are successful at minimizing the potential for gob fires and explosions. The work performed at each mine is discussed: One is a longwall operation that uses ventilation to carry off hazardous gases, and two are room- and-pillar operations, each with far different concerns, that seal off the gobs to isolate them from the main mine ventilation. In all cases, employment of the Bureau's SF6 tracer gas technique resulted in answers to questions raised by the mine operators concerning the effectiveness of their gob ventilation or sealing practices in preventing mine fires.

New Zealand Steel Limited is nearing completion of the environmental reporting and planning procedures for its proposed fivefold expansion to steelmaking at Glenbrook, and supporting mining operations at Waikato North Head. A report on the proposal to transport concentrate from the mining operations to Glenbrook has also been prepared and is awaiting release. This paper draws from these events, and by discussing some of the problems encountered, gives some guidelines for the preparation of an Environmental Impact Report.

An effective production control system should maximise recovery of economic material from the resource. To do this, internal waste must be accurately delineated and efficiently removed. Achieving this is most difficult in low grade blocks just above and just below the cut off grade, where ore:waste separation follows assay or statistical, rather than geological boundaries. Difficulties arise from sampling errors, configuration of the economic mineralisation, and local variations in geology. Mine bench parameters and mining equipment size apply further constraints to the actual field separation of the ore from the waste. At BCL, management of the resource starts with an effective orebody model for planning, scheduling and ore:waste prediction. Ore production from each mining location is reconciled with concentrator tonnage and grade, and the reconciled grades are compared with the planning orebody model to highlight any Differences.

A simple and rapid method for delennining gold and silver in carbon samples is described. The method involves dissolution of carbon ash in a strong oxidising medium of aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid. Gold and silver are determined in the resultant solution using atomic absorption speetrometry (AAS). The method is efficient and reproducible. Gold results are comparable to the standard fire assay results, with agreement of results within ± 5 per cent. The co-efficients of variation for gold and silver are 0.37 and 0.39 per cent respectively for six replicate analyses. The analysis of gold and silver in a batch of ten carbon samples can be completed in approximately four hours.

A 3D graphics modelling system has been applied to longhole stope ring design at Z.C. Mines, Broken Hill, NSW. This has been in operation for a four month period (January, 1988). The purpose of this application was to provide computer assistance to mine planning engineers and blasthole design draftsmen for the longhole design process, particularly by: 1. reducing the- volume of tracing, drafting and geometric manipulation which is a significant feature of the manual design process, 2. providing additional design drawings to enhance the conception and implementation of stoping design.

Under South Africanncoalmining conditions, in the majority of instances coal is won using the bord and pillar system without pillar extraction. Examples demonstrate that strata control policy has an effect on practically all aspects of mining: (1) the choice of mining method; ((2) degree of coal recovery; (3) effect on productivity; (L}.) integration of'-support techniques with other operations. This is confirmed by use of modern research results and computer simulation. Although the examples are drawn from South African experience, the conclusion is generally valid. Strata control problems cannot be solved in isolation but as an. integral part of overall mining policy.

Conditional simulation is a branch of geo- statistics which allows the simulation of a mineral deposit so that predictions can be made about the variability of some particular parameter of the deposit. The proposed underground mine at Porgera forms an integral part of the Porgera Joint Venture project in Enga Province in the remote Highlands of Papua New Guinea. The total in-situ reserves are approaching 400 tonnes of gold making the Porgera deposit one of the largest in the world. The remote, rugged and inhospitable terrain, recent unstable geological environment and primitive yet socially complex nature of the densely populated local community, combine to make the Porgera project very different to developing mines in Australia. The Porgera project is a challenging and exciting mining exploration venture in the final stages of feasibility study submission and negotiations with the National Government of Papua New Guinea. A 1476 m exploration adit was driven in the footwall of the high grade mineralisation for diamond drilling purposes as part of the evaluations necessary for the feasibility study. Ground conditions encountered have ranged from weak mudstones with high water content, requiring immediate steel set support, to competent intrusives.

The Queensland Magnesia Project is based on a unique cryptocrystalline nodular magnesite orebody which required an innovative approach to process design in order to economically exploit the characteristics of the ore and produce a marketable range of high quality refractory magnesias for a declining world market. High quality natural refractory magnesia must have an MgO content in excess of 95 per cent with a very strictly controlled content and ratio of residual impurities such as calcium, silica and iron. The natural products compete with magnesias derived by chemical extraction from sea water or brines which exhibit very high purity but often lack other characteristics which are of value to refractory brick makers. Since start up in late-1991 QMAG has achieved a remarkable market penetration for both its deadburned and electrofused products with sales for the 1993/94 financial year representing 92 per cent of deadburned capacity and 138 per cent of original electrofused capacity respectively, all at a time when the world steel industry has been in recession.

To discuss this relationship both the problems of the mechanisms of ore accumulation and the origin and cause of volcanism must be faced. Volcanic activity is associated with hydrothermal activity but the causes of volcanism are inseparable from the problems of the origin of magmas generally. To be more in accord with the inevitable reaction between water and silicates at high temperature, it is suggested that reconsidera- tion be given to the role of water in magmas such that our general concept of magmas becomes one of hot hydrous pastes rather than melts with water in them. It is claimed that a general concept of magmas as gelatinous hydrosilicate masses is a far better assumption because the rheological and diffusive properties of such materials enables an adequate explanation of a greater number of observations. It is consistent with the mergence of magmatic and metamorphic rocks and requires low to modest temperatures at the time of liquifaction allowing convergence with mobilised and disturbed sediment masses. The physical and chemical properties of both wet sediment pastes and magmas envisaged as hydrolised silicate masses are entirely dependent on the enormous internal surfaces of their disordered solvated components. A probabilistic approach is proposed for updating open pit slope sta- bility based on successful performance. The suggested approach is developed within the framework of Bayesian probability theory. In seeking solutions to geomechanics problems consideration must be given to inher- ent variability of shear strength parameters and to the errors in the esti- mation of these parameters. The latter can be significant and may lead to consistent overestimation or underestimation of the values derived from site investigation and testing. Conventional deterministic methods of slope stability analysis do not allow systematic modelling of uncertainties in applied loads or in shear strength parameters. Within a probabilistic framework indicators of stability may be calculated, e.g., the reliability index and the probability of failure. Based on observation of slope per- formance at any given stage of a project, the mean or the standard devi- ation (or both) of a shear strength parameter may be updated. Consequently the indicators of stability can also be updated. The appli- cation of such an approach is demonstrated by an illustrative example.

The growth in the nickel market and the price increases predicted in 1970 have not mat-erialized. Several plants have been construct-ed, particularly to treat lateritic ores. A spectacular increase in cost of energy and the escalation of capital costs have led to severe economic difficulties on the part of many nickel producers. Several of the nickel prod-ucers joined together to form a Nickel Develop-ment Institute in 1984 with the prime objective of improving nickel markets. Most producers have taken exceptional action to cut overall costs as well as unit costs. Another organiz-ation made up of nickel producers, NiPERA, was established in 1980, to study and take action on problems of nickel in the environment and especially in the workplace.Ion exchange, and particularly continuous ion exchange, has been developed into a reli-able commercial unit operation in the last dec-ade. An example of how ion exchange combined with hydrogen reduction can be integrated into a Caron type reduction roast ammonium carbonate leach process for the recovery of nickel from laterites is discussed.

The process and control technologies incorporated into the coal preparation plant at Newlands were to be used for the first time in Australia. The commissioning organisation and procedures were set up on the basis that commissioning personnel, while being competent, would be unfamiliar with the equipment. In addition the commissioning process would have to be completed quickly. The organisation coped with all of these problems and more.

The best long-term approach to exploration involves the use of extensive quality data and the integration of many different factors, methods and techniques. The successful exploration manager needs to integrate people, area selection and exploration methods, with the use of descriptive and genetic geological models. Based on a syn-metamorphic genetic model for Archaean gold, successful exploration in Western Australia requires the integration of data on anomalous gold, alteration, lithology and structure. Many other parameters such as geophysics, geochemistry and regolith studies provide additional, indirect information that needs to be integrated into the overall exploration programme. Timely access to research findings and ability to integrate these into immediate exploration has contributed considerably to the success of the gold industry in Western Australia since 1980. Extensive and deeper drilling, and the ability of computers to handle the volume of data generated have enabled effective testing of many more geological targets.

External pressures are being exerted on busi- ness, and especially the mining and energy in- dustries, as never before. These pressures are burdensome, they emerge in unique forms, and they constitute an entirely new operating environ- ment for business. They pose one of the signi- ficant challenges to senior management today. To cope with these pressures-which we have termed the new public realities-we must deal more effectively with the media, the public, and government. However, before examining methods for improvement, it is essential to understand the nature of these new public realities and par- ticularly their determinants-the underlying eco- nomic, sociological, political, and international events and trends which have shaped them. Previously the productive element of society had only to concern itself with what might be termed `conventional realities' : the costs of labour, equipment, and land, as well as marketing and distribution factors.
