The paper presents the results of a series of pull out tests performed on roof reinforcement systems currently being adopted in mines in Australia 7mm wire, dividag bar, 15.2mm strand cable, and birdcage cable. The study also investigated the load deformation chara- cteristics and the various design parameters controlling the effectiveness of a cable-grout system. Suggestions for continued work are Highlighted.

Injection of gases into slag-melt mixtures produces various zones as a result of bubble formation and disintegration within the melt. The extent of these zones depends on the type of reactor used. When compared with ferrous processes, non ferrous processes are character- ised by large bubbles formed adjacent to the tuyeres, low flowrates and shallow tuyere sub- mergence. These features can result in a greater proportion of reaction occurring above the bath, more refractory wear and tuyere blockage with more splashing. The large bubble zone adjacent to the tuyeres has been investigated using the tech- niques of physical modelling, mathematical modelling and plant trials. Large bubble form- ation in physical models was recorded using a high speed camera and a rapid response pressure transducer coupled to an oscilloscope and data recorder. It was found that the bubble volume (Vb) could be correlated at low flowrates using the single bubble model Vb = 1.378 Q6/5 g-3/5 Deviations from this correlation occurred with increasing gas jet momentum. Plant trials were carried out on a copper converter at Mount Isa Mines during five different charges. Pressure measurements were made through the tuyeres during the slag blow and commencement of the copper blow. The power spectrum density showed that the dominant pulse amplitude occurred at a frequency of approximately 3 pulses/sec. Plant data from this and other converters were correlated using the same relationship as for physical modelling. De- viations occurred due to the state of the re- fractory, bath composition or bath circulation effects.

Commercial operation of the Sherritt Gordon process in Australia for the leaching of nickel sulphides has promoted an investi- gation of the factors which influence extraction kinetics. This portion of the investigation has been directed towards the physical and chemical nature of the concentrate and the physical evi- dence of the mode of extraction. Details of the particle size distribution, mineral composition and chemical composition are given. The dis- tribution of various minerals in different size fractions and magnetic fractions is discussed. An electron microprobe was used to determine the composition of individual grains in the concentrate. The solid residue from an ammonia oxi- dation leach was subjected to microphotograph- ic examination, X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning by an electron microprobe. Clear evidence was obtained for a shrinking core mode of kinetic extraction with an amorphous iron oxide product layer contrary to previous reports that the latter is pseudomorphic with the original mineral.

The ore used in this test program was a composite sample from Waihi, New Zealand containing 2.7 g/t gold and 36 g/t silver. From the testwork it was found that a high concentration of sodium cyanide (0.1 per cent) was necessary to ensure a high recovery of both gold and silver. There appeared little chance for either differential leaching or adsorption of gold and silver. The addition of bentonite clay decreased the rates of gold and silver dissolution. The addition of 50 g/1 NaCI had little influence on the rate of silver extraction. The addition of 5 g/l carbon gave adsorptions of 70 per cent of the gold and 35 per cent of the silver, indicating the possible presence of base metal cyanides in solution. The addition of excess sodium sulphide only precipitated 70 per cent of the silver in solution, adding further evidence to the presence of base metal sulphides. The production of separate silver and gold products was not possible by either preferential leaching, preferential adsorption of gold on carbon or preferential precipitation of silver.

Prior to 1975, most geochemical drainage surveys for gold were based on analyses for pathfinder elements, such as As and Cu, rather than direct analysis for gold, for two reasons. Firstly, analytical methods lacked the required sensitivity and precision to determine gold abundance at background levels in stream sediments (usually in the range 1 - 10 ppb). Direct analysis was also inhibited by concern about the potential for gross sampling error, brought about by the dispersion of gold as rare discrete particles of the extremely dense native metal. This sampling error, commonly termed the 'nugget effect' has two components: erratic distribution of the element within the stream environment, related to hydraulic factors, and the difficulty in taking representative samples, both in the field and later in sub-sampling for analysis. In more recent years the collection of very large samples was commonly advocated to overcome the sampling problem (Hams, 1982; Nichol, 1986).Two methods have been widely used to evaluate the gold content of bulk samples (Elliott and Towsey, 1989). The preparation and analysis of heavy mineral concentrates has in recent years been largely superseded by the leaching of gold contained in bulk samples by cyanide, commonly termed the BLEG (Bulk Leach Extractable Gold) or BCL (Bulk Cyanide Leach) methods. The terms BLEG and BCL are essentially interchangeable and the latter will be adopted for the remainder of this paper. To gain further understanding of the operating efficiency of the BHP Slab and Plate Products Division (SPPD) RH vacuum degasser, physical and mathematical model studies of the process have been undertaken. The purpose was to investigate how the various process parameters affect the liquid circulation rate, to visualise the flow patterns, and to identify and eliminate the cause of localised wear in the downleg. In the physical model mixing times were measured using an acid tracer technique. The results were applied to predicting trends in times required to obtain homogenous melt composition under varying conditions. A 2-dimensional mathematical model describing the liquid metal flow has been developed using the PHOENICS fluid-flow package. The physical model results were simulated and incorporated into the mathematical treatment and an improved design for vessel geometry is proposed. The effect of rounding the downleg entrance or installing a baffle between the legs is discussed.

I am very pleased to be here at this seminar on carbon-in-pulp (CIP) technology for the extraction of gold as I am always interested to hear about any new development in any aspect of gold ore processing. We can expect to learn a great deal from the papers to be presented over the next few days. It is not my purpose to give a detailed description of the CIP process nor to give a complete historical review. However, in this opening address it was thought appropriate that I should mention some historical features and some technical factors to set the scene for subsequent papers. At the Cominco Ltd plant in Trail, British Columbia, the Betts lead electrorefining operation requires that antimony and arsenic be present in the lead bullion for anode slimes stability control. Until 1986 the antimony and arsenic inputs from concentrates to the Lead Smelter needed to be supplemented with high antimony and arsenic content recycles from the Silver Refinery operation to maintain a satisfactory composition. Subsequently the antimony and arsenic inputs have increased as a result of increasing levels of antimony in Sullivan lead concentrate and the purchase of larger quantities of silver/gold bearing concentrates that inherently have higher antimony and arsenic levels. The increase has exceeded the limits required by the Betts process. It therefore became necessary to install a partial softening process downstream of the Continuous Drossing Furnace to satisfactorily control the bullion composition. Process control and oxygen injection techniques used in the partial softening process are reviewed. Approximately 8 tonnes/day of softening slag are produced having a combined antimony and arsenic content of 25 percent. This slag is reduced in a recently commissioned short rotary furnace followed by vacuum distillation of the metal for recovery of the antimony and arsenic values.

Roof falls and failures of powered supports were major threats at longwall face. Abnormal geological conditions were caused roof falls and shield damage. Therefore continuous monitoring and analysis of strata behaviour was imperative on real time for forecasting adverse behaviour. Novel PXI instrumentation system was successfully developed for continuous monitoring and analysis of supports pressure, leg closure and gate roads convergence. However, this paper briefly examines the novel gate roads convergence monitoring system with field applications.

The application of discreet event simulation has matured in modelling manufacturing systems for production analysis. This simulation tool was used in studying a number of mining operations, especially material handling processes. The study of truck-shovel operation including equipment matching, selection, and production estimation utilised the discrete event simulation for providing valuable decision-making information. The sophistication of the available simulation tools grew over times, and simulation driven animation was used to facilitate the validation and visualisation of the simulated system. This form of visualisation enhanced the simulation use greatly. First of all, it provided a communication medium to transfer information to the non-technical managerial personnel as a better decision-making tool. Moreover, the animated visualisation provided a validation tool to check the working of the simulated system and interaction among its components.

The poor quality of bore waters available to the Australian mineral processing industry creates a climate for crystallization of calcium based scales. If ignored, calcite and/or gypsum buildup can cause loss of production and costly unscheduled maintenance. This paper discusses the factors which contribute to scale forma- tion, methods used to monitor buildup and preventative measures (mechanical and chemical) that can be used. A case history il- lustrates the value of using chemical antiscalants.

The completion of the Hot Strip Mill at the Port Kembla works of Australian Iron & Steel Ltd., makes possible the production of steel plates and wide strip of a quality and in quantities not possible previously in Australia, and will also enable the production of tinplate to be undertaken in this country.The site chosen for the mill was a mud fiat underlain by a hard stone bottom at 5, to 801 feet below the surface; and a total area of one hundred acres was reclaimed to a level of 20 feet above the original surface.Three adjoining buildings were constructed to house the slab receiving yard, mill equipment and electric drive, together with the plate finishing line.After slabs have been heated to 2250°F at a rate of 90 tons per hour, they are transferred to the vertical scale breaker which is the first stand in the hot roughing mill. Here the primary furnace scale is first cracked and then blasted off by high velocity water descaling sprays.The next stand is the horizontal scale l;Jreaker, where any remaining primary scale is broken and then blasted off. After descaling, the slabs pass to the broadside mill, where short slabs are turned and rolled on broad side for wide plate.The next step is a slab squeezer which squares up the edges after broadsiding ready for the reversing mill. This is the finishing stand for plate and the last roughing stand for strip, which then passes to the finishing mill.The hot strip finishing mill consists of six stands with a maximum finishing speed of 2,230 feet per minute. Ridgeway Gold Mine (Ridgeway) has a clear mission to maximise its cash flows in order to deliver shareholder value and is developing strategies to achieve this. Business process management using leading measures is core to this approach. Leading measures indicate potential outcomes ahead of time, allowing time to adapt and improve. Ridgeway is making strategy a central organisational agenda, creating a focus to æput first things firstÆ by controlling æleadingÆ activities and mobilising employees to act. Feedback using specific, leading measures gives employees the opportunity to proactively adapt their behaviour in order to deliver internal business outcomes that generate cash flows and shareholder value. This paper will outline RidgewayÆs business approach to track and control processes from resource to revenue, with a focus on delivering cash flows and shareholder value. The quality of the rock mass in which an excavation is being driven has a strong influence on the level of dynamic forces to which the excavation can be subjected and sustain damage. Though each specific rock mass occurrence is unique yet there are common rock mass features which influence the outcome of controlled blasting in a similar way. A field study was conducted which involved assessment of blast damage at several operating mines and the blasting of small-scale models. The effects of block size and strength, joint parameters, ground water, weathering of rocks and rock mass rating on the results of controlled blasting have been investigated and discussed in this study.

Blasting, particularly bench blasting, uses finite length cylinders of explosive close to two free faces. The rock to be blasted is usually intersected by a complex 3-D system of joints. To fully simulate a blast, a 3-D dynamic model is required. It is shown that the static stress distribution around a long cylinder can be reproduced by superposing the static stress distribution of a suitable chain of spheres. Thus, the dynamic results for individual spheres given by Favreau (1969) can now be substituted for the static results to give a dynamic model of the stress distribution around a long cylinder. Comparison of measured and computed waveforms show that the measured waveforms are much more attenuated and dispersed than expected. The consequences for explosive evaluation and design are Discussed.

Since the discovery of Pajingo in 1984, the northern Drummond Basin has emerged as a significant new gold province, and has become the focus of intense exploration for epithermal gold mineralisation. Prospects in the Conway area are hosted by felsic to intermediate lavas and volcaniclastic rocks near the base of the Drummond Basin sequence. These Drummond Basin rocks appear to represent favourable hosts to mineralisation because they are cut by structures which could have focussed and channelled fluids on a regional scale, and because they constitute a possible source of gold and, perhaps more significantly, sulphur for the transport of gold. Prospects in the Conway area are up to 15 km2 in area, and are of the adularia-sericite type. They illustrate many of the classic features (siliceous sinters, alteration mineralogy, and fluid characteristics) recognised in epithermal deposits. K-Ar dating of sericite alteration in three of the prospects has produced a range of ages from 283 to 334 Ma, suggesting that the systems are the product of multiple hydrothermal events.

Four field test plots were constructed in 1998 on a sloped waste rock surface at the Myra Falls Operations of Boliden Westmin (Canada) Limited to evaluate hydraulic performance of alternate cover system designs. The field test plot cover systems were designed to control oxygen ingress and water infiltration to the underlying waste rock while providing a medium for a grass and legume vegetation cover. The test plots consisted of a bare waste rock surface (control plot), and three additional plots consisting of native compacted till placed directly on the waste rock surface, overlain by non-compacted till. Two of the test plots included a compacted till layer ameliorated with flyash and bentonite, respectively, to improve moisture retention and reduce permeability. The third test plot consisted of a compacted layer of native till overlain by non-compacted till. A performance monitoring system was installed in each test plot to evaluate net percolation and oxygen ingress to the underlying waste rock. In addition, each test plot has profiles of matric suction, water content, and temperature sensors installed at up-slope and down slope locations. A review of four years of monitoring data shows that the compacted till/bentonite cover system has been most successful in limiting the infiltration of meteoric waters and oxygen ingress to the underlying waste rock material. The compacted till/flyash and compacted till cover systems have produced similar net percolation results and neither have functioned well in maintaining an oxygen ingress layer throughout the year. The amelioration of bentonite with till to produce a compacted barrier layer shows promise in reducing water and oxygen ingress at the MFO site, while the incorporation of flyash with the till did not result in a significant increase in performance. The field performance data clearly demonstrates the need for developing field trials prior to full-scale construction, as opposed to relying solely on an un-calibrated numerical modelling to design the full-scale cover system.

Since 1981 two single entry roadways have been driven at Ellalong Colliery for a total distance of 1 030 metres. They were driven at a height of 1.73 metres within the 3.7 metres thick Greta Seam using a Dosco In-Seam Miner (I.S.M.). Ventilation of the drivage was accomplish- ed by an exhausting fan in series with steel ducting and flexible ducting in the immediate face area. The air quantities provided at the face were more than adequate to comply with the requirements of -the auxiliary fan rules and the Coal Mines Regulation Act, 1912, as amended. The experience gained in these drivages demonstrated that the ventilation of long single entry headings can be practically and safely achieved using existing equipment.

The seasonal fluctuations of the dust content in Arctic mine environments and the environmental variables affecting the intensity of dust production are qualitatively well known, but quantitative models that allow simulation and prediction of dust generation and the effects of engineering control of thermal regime on the mine environment are still non-existent. In Arctic mines, the migration of moisture in the surrounding rock mass releases fine dust by freeing it from the ice matrix allowing it to escape into mine airway. The migration of moisture is the direct cause for the production of mine dust and heat is the primary driving force. This paper examins the heat and moisture exchange between the ventilation air and the surrounding rock mass in frozen ground, placer mines in the Arctic. Based on the simulated results of a coupled heat and mass transfer problem with phase change, methods of dust control have been identified for mines in the Arctic.
