The Imperial Smelting Furnace at Cockle Creek, NSW, was constructed in 1961 and is the oldest facility using the Imperial Smelting process in operation. In recent years there have been significant improvements in many areas of the operation, including production, safety, hygiene and environmental performance. Steps taken to achieve these improvements are described. Plans to secure a profitable future while meeting environmental requirements are outlined.

Robertson Diasol have developed a spectral gamma-gamma tool fully able to withstand borehole conditions. Spectral data is digitally recorded across 256 channels depending on energy levels of the photoelectric effect. Data processing is being developed with the objective of calibrating channel amplitudes to mineral type which will lead to a direct log of selected mineral grade as a continuous trace with depth.

The Indonesian province of Papua is a remote jungle-clad region covering the western half of the mountainous island of New Guinea. Despite being relatively under-explored to this day,Papua is home to the greatest mineral success story of the 20th century. The Grasberg/Ertsberg minerals district atop the central dividing range contains the worldÆs largest reserve of both copper and gold (Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold, 2002). With large mines at Ok Tedi,Por gera and Lihir,and many well-delineated resources such as Frieda River,Wafi and Hidden Valley, neighbouring Papua New Guinea,the eastern half of New Guinea has enjoyed sustained exploration campaigns for gold and copper since the mid 1960s. The combined Grasberg and PNG exploration successes can be measured in terms of ounces of gold produced over the last decade versus available landmass,conf irming the island of New Guinea and surrounding islands as a world-class destination for gold explorers. Yet despite this obvious regional prospectivity and the profitability of the Grasberg operation, a sustained exploration effort in the Papua province in Indonesia has not been achieved. Periodic political constraints, poor infrastructure, high costs, operational challenges, social and environmental concerns and lack of immediate exploration success often impact exploration investment decisions. Accordingly a lesser number of mineral occurrences have been documented in Papua compared to those seen along tectonic strike in geologically similar Papua New Guinea.

The population and the per capila consumption of mineral resources have both grown dramatically during the century past. It is argued that growth will continue through the century ahead but that the magnitudes of undiscovered resources are probably adequate to meet demands. The challenge that the mineral explorer of the future will face is finding deposits beneath several kilometres of barren rock.It is further argued that the principal challenge that society will face in the century ahead is the amelioration of environmental stress.

Low-density explosives (LDE) have applications where the explosive properties of ANFO are not well matched to the rock. In particular, rocks that are of low strength and/or well fragmented in situ. Dyno Nobel Asia Pacific (DNAP) has developed a new LDE, BlastLiteTM, which can be used as a cost-effective replacement for ANFO with excellent detonation characteristics. The product is based on ANFO with the addition of a bulking agent. The key to the product lies in the ability of the bulking agent to form a homogeneous blend with ANFO without the need for any emulsion matrix to bind the product together. This results in an LDE of low cost and high weight strength compared to existing commercial LDE products. The product has been trialled extensively and has proven to provide results that are equivalent to, and often better than, ANFO with reduced powder factors. This paper details the laboratory development and results of field trials for DNAPÆs LDE solution: BlastLite.

Ongoing, collaborative research between CSIRO's Exploration and Mining and Strata Control Technology has resulted in a better understanding of rock failure mechanisms around longwall extraction. Failure has occurred further ahead of the retreating face than predicted by conventional longwall geomechanics theory. In some cases significant failure has been detected several hundred metres ahead of the face position with demonstrated influences of minor geological discontinuities. Shear, rather than tensile failure has been the predominant failure mechanism in the environments monitored. Validating technologies of microseismic monitoring and new face monitoring techniques have assisted the development of predictive 2D computational modelling tools. The demonstrated 3D consequences of failure has assisted in the ongoing direction of the project to further investigate these effects.

Oakbridge, in combination with its joint venture partner, Nippon Steel of Japan, is expanding its Bulga underground and open cut mines to meet the growing demand for coal in the Asian market. Expansion works underway will see the Bulga underground mine become a world leader in underground productivity, the introduction of a high capacity dragline into the open cut mine (largest capacity dragline in NSW) as well as a major upgrade of the coal preparation plant (CPP) and coal handling facilities (CHF) to process the increased production. This paper describes the planning and implementation of this major expansion program and highlights the rationale behind some key aspects of the program.

Selection of mining methods, stope dimensions and stoping sequences is usually based on comparisons with other similar orebodies or rocktypes. Rock mechanics principles assist the process, which can be further improved by application of rock mechanics' models - in particular, computer based stress analysis techniques. These models vary in capabilities and potential application but, basically, can be subdivided into techniques which only model the surface of excavations, and those which model the total volume to be analysed. To address the wide range of geometries, stoping methods and sequences, and geomechanical environments at Mount Isa Mines, a number of models have been developed. By presenting examples of their actual and potential application it is demonstrated that appropriate use of these techniques will assist in the determination of mining parameters and improve ore recovery. Examples presented cover sequencing in tabular and massive orebodies, location of shafts and shaft pillars, and backfill and hanging-wall stability. It is concluded that surface techniques are more appropriate for regional analyses and volume techniques are more suited to analyses of detailed, local geometry. The smelting of concentrates and secondary materials has been subject to increasing challenges in recent years due to declining grades of feed materials, increasing impurity levels and ever more stringent environmental regulations. In addition there has been a growing focus on maximising the efficiency of energy usage and recovery of values. New opportunities have been created with rising metals prices and improved systems for the collection of secondary materials, giving rise to a need for more flexible process solutions.This paper focuses on a number of specific cases where a process solution has been developed using the Outotec« Ausmelt Process to meet particular feed material challenges and overcome limitations inherent when employing traditional pyrometallurgical processes.The first case involves the development and commercial implementation of a smelting process to recover values from zinc smelting residues typically deposited into dams as a waste product. The second case describes the application of the Ausmelt process for the smelting and converting of secondary copper feed materials, including e-waste. These materials contain a wide range of metals and plastics and need to be processed appropriately to maximise the recovery of values whilst avoiding environmental problems. The third case study covers the smelting of nickel concentrates containing elevated magnesia levels as well as nickel bearing catalysts with high alumina content, neither of which can be readily processed when employing traditional pyrometallurgical technologies. The relevant characteristic of the evolution of the Pacific continental margin of South America during the Mesozoic-Early Cenozoic has been tectonic segmentation. This has controlled suc-cesive episodes of sedimentary accumula-tion, extrusive and intrusive magmatism and deformation that ocurred at conver-vergent plate edges. During this inter-val, at least three main transverse boundaries played an important role conditioning the existence of paleo-segments of different longitudinal extent at various Periods. These probably correspond to deep-seated faults in the Huancabamba Deflection and at the Arica-Santa Cruz Line; the third boundary projects westward to the Chile Ridge. Tectonic activity appears to have been continous at the Huancabamba Deflection at least since the Triassic. The Arica-Santa Cruz Line was probably an active boundary during the Triassic and Cretaceous; the southernmost boundary may have started to be active at the end of the Jurassic. This tectonic activity has determined the subsidence - uplift and paleogeographic conditions of the paleosegments.

Activated carbon particles obtained from a number of Australian CIP operations were examined with an optical and a scanning electron micro- scope and an electron microprobe. External surfaces, and polished sec- tions through individual particles, were examined with special reference to materials on the surface and to calcium and gold distributions. Photographs are presented of surface contamination of the particles by salts precipitated from the pulp such as calcium carbonate (calcite), calcium sulphate (gypsum), and a magnesium salt; ore minerals such as quartz, hematite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, pentlandite, and various alumino- silicates; and other substances such as grinding media and a fungus. Calcite was very abundant but the other materials were less common. Contamination in the interior of carbon particles was almost exclu- sively calcium carbonate, and extensive contamination extended to the centre of some particles. A possible mechanism for the formation of cal- cium carbonate inside the carbon particles is noted. Gold X-ray dot maps of sections through carbon particles indicated that gold was distributed throughout coconut shell carbons and that although gold was more concentrated near the outer surfaces of extruded peat carbon particles, it was also present to depths of at least 500 ¦m. The mechanism of caving is of interest to the mining engineer only in areas where he is directly concerned. One area is surface subsidence which is outside the scope of this paper. Another area is at the face where coal is being extracted and where control of caving is of vital importance. Coal mining systems have been developed with many considerations in mind, but in this list of considerations, strata control has seldom been given much importance. Research is in progress in Australia to endeavour to determine an optimum sequence for coal extraction underground. As information becomes avail- able from this work it is hoped that appropriate methods of controlling caving in various strata conditions will be devised. When this is done, equipment may be introduced to permit the mining operation to proceed under optimum conditions for strata control, rather than devising a mining procedure to suit the equipment available and methods developed for other reasons.

Quite often the reserve assessor becomes enamored with the numbers gen- erated and forgets the basis for his assessment. The quality of the assess- ment can only be as good as the quality of the input data. The use of seismic data from the Gippsland Basin in assess- ing Esso/BHP's oil and gas reserves is an excellent example of this principle. By significantly improving the quality of seismic data, a much more reliable estimate of a field's reserve potential can be made. In addition, it provides the basis for further delineation drill- ing which, as recent experience in Gippsland has shown, often leads to increased reserves.

The Red Dome Gold/Copper Mine is located approximately 15 km west of the township of Chillagoe which itself is approximately 220 km by road west of Cairns, Far North Queensland. The deposit, with other mines in the Mungana region, was worked from about 1901 to 1927. Exploration by Amoco Minerals Australia in the 1970s and early 1980s outlined a geological resource of 15 million tonnes. A mining reserve of 9.3 million tonnes was identified and originally developed by Elders Resources Limited. The mine commenced operations in March 1986 and was the first large-scale gold project in Australia to be developed solely on the heap leach process. The mine operated successfully as a gold heap leach operation until 1989 when new grinding, flotation and carbon-in-leach plant facilities were installed to process the non heap-leachable component of the orebody including the copper rich -ore. In March 1991, Red Dome Pty Ltd became a wholly owned subsidiary of Niugini Mining Limited. After six years of successful operation and having excavated a 200 in deep pit, it became evident in 1992 that unless more open cut reserves could be identified the operation was limited to six to nine months of high grade ore and a further 15 months of low grade stockpile material. A preliminary feasibility study was carried out to assess the viability of deepening the open cut. This indicated that from a technical and financial point of view it was possible to expand and deepen the open cut. This presented the daunting challenge of developing a 300 in deep, single access, open cut between a high chert ridge, a government railway line and a National Park. The meeting of this challenge is the subject of this paper.

Traditional exploration has been undertaken by both local and overseas experts to discover tin deposits in Indonesia over almost 300 years. Indonesia is part of a tin belt which runs from Myanmar in the north through Malaysia to Singkep, Bangka, and Belitung islands in Indonesia in the south. The discovery of alluvial tin deposits is becoming harder as the more obvious geological targets are exhausted and topographical conditions become more difficult. New approaches are required to sustain successful exploration. There are indications that tin deposits can be found at depth on-shore as well as off-shore. These deposits are found associated with tough clays. On-shore tin exploration is hampered by swampy areas, while the off-shore search is often affected by difficult sea conditions. These factors lead to increases in the cost of exploration as well as the cost of subsequent production. Tin price fluctuations and environmental issues are also of major concern in the planning of the future operation of tin mining in Indonesia.

It is now 32 years since Walsh's classic publication (1) heralded the beginning of atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AA) as we know it today. During this time, AA has developed into the most widely used analytical techniques for the determination of the metallic elements. The years have seen progressive changes in instrumentation so that today it is a highly sophisticated technique. One area of development in AA that is experiencing renewed attention is in the area of electrothermal excitation. In this technique a flame is not used by the analyte solution is atomised by an electrically heated graphite furnace. For a large number of elements the graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer (GFAA) is considerably more sensitive than flame work. It is common to be able to detect concentrations one hundred times smaller than those possible by flame. Today's geochemists are finding that they can gain valuable information out of very low limits of detection. Electrothermal atomic absorption spectrophotometry (or GFAA) allows for low limits of detection and can be seen to be a valuable aid to geochemical prospecting Analysis.

Coal Mining machinery has undergone enormous changes in design and complexity of controls in the past 10 years. Specialised, high productivity equipment has been manufactured in Australia, in sufficient volume, to satisfy the local mullet needs.Local manufacturers face greater challenges from overseas competition, as well as increased customer demands to improve machine performance, productivity, quality, reliability and safety. In order to meet these demands now and in the future, it will be necessary to review work practises, and restructure production and quality systems to incorporate the latest principles and philosophies.

A reliable scale-up procedure for column flotation must address three important areas of column design, ie column geometry, sparging system and wash water distribution network. The column geometry is dictated by the maximum froth carrying capacity (which determines column diameter) and the bubble-particle attachment rate and particle retention time (which determines column length). The most important factor in the scale-up of an air sparging system is the ability to produce small bubbles in both laboratory and full-scale columns. Other factors, such as energy consumption and maintenance requirements, should also be considered in the scale-up of bubble generators. It is also important to design a wash water distribution system that can properly control the froth stability and maximise the column throughput. Based on these criteria, a successful scale-up example is given.

Before the arrival of the first Europeans, Aborigines living in the northern Flinders Ranges mined ochre - an earthy form of haematite used for pigment.The discovery of copper ore at Kapunda and Burra in the 1840s stimulated the early settlers to prospect further north along the ranges. Many of the new discoveries were not properly evaluated and companies were floated on the most tenuous evidence.

I In an optical microscope, mild attack by cyanide solutions on various minerals can be observed by means of colour changes as well as etching patterns. However, the mineral may not be identifiable due to the coloured film. In some cases, a transfer algorithm between mechanical stages enables the surface-altered mineral to be identified in the SEM. A more severe attack may not be so informative, as it is not known whether the mineral attacked has been completely dissolved away. The leaching behaviour of some common minerals is described.
