Appin Colliery mines the Bulli Seam with a gas composition of 98.5% methane and 1.5% carbon dioxide. Relaxation of the strata generally occurs to below the base of the Wongawilli Seam, some 40 m below the Bulli Seam, and approxim- ately 125 m above the Bulli Seam, for longwall face widths of 135 m or more. Previous exper- ience showed that when longwall faces were mined for a distance approximately equal to the face width, the mine ventilation could not provide sufficient dilution due to methane emissions from the underlying measures. Postdraining downholes were drilled to intersect the Wongawilli Seam below the operat- ng longwall. These holes were connected to an underground to surface gas range and various suction levels were applied to improve gas drainage. The resulting gas flow rates and purity from all the downholes were regularly monitored and peak flows in some holes exceeded 160 1/sec. The surface plant drained almost 20 million m3 of gas for the period July 1981 to January 1982 at an average methane purity of approximately 70%. The method for design of primary roof support for the large todoidal cavern constructed to house the Sydney Opera House parking station is presented. The cavern was constructed with 5 m of rock cover beneath Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens. Design of rock reinfonnent using a combination of fully grouted rock dowels and Macalloy bars was based on control of horizontal shear movement along bedding features in the roof. A combination of linear arch type analyses and non-linear jointed finite element analyses were used in the design study together with an analysis of the shear resistance offered by fully grouted bolts under shear deformation.

The Early Proterozioc Pine Creek Geosyncline hosts a large number of gold showings. Mineralisation types include stratiform, synsedimentary deposits within iron formation and carbonaceous mudstone; disseminations in granophyric intrusives; and quartz vein related concentrations in the form of shear fillings, saddle reefs and stockworks. Stratiform gold deposits preferentially formed near penecontemporareous faults during periods of basin instability. Intrusive basic magmas later assimilated some stratiform mineralisation and subsequently redeposited it within differentiated phases. Gold was again remobilized during regional deformation and metamorphism. Stratiform mineralisation was upgraded insitu in high strain zones and gold was mobilized into metamorphic fluids. Fluid induced fracturing during prograde metamorphism and later uplift caused the deposition of extensive gold rich vein systems. The genetic relationship between gold deposit types is reflected in the clustering of showings along regional anticlines, and provides a powerful exploration tool. The large volume of 'exhalative'òmaterial in the Geosyncline with elevated gold content suggests significant economic stratiform mineralisation may be present, and probably provides a source for later disseminated and vein deposits.

Electro-Slag Remelting (ESR) is a process capable of producing ingots with much lower centre-line segregation and better internal soundness than conventional ingot casting processes, as well as lower inclusion and sulfur concentrations. This process is commonly used for alloyed steels intended for critical applications like components of marine turbines, supercritical powerplants and rocket motor casings. It involves melting a metal electrode using electrical resistive heating in a slag pool and re-solidification of the resulting metal droplets beneath the slag layer, forming an ingot. Conventional ESR fluxes consist primarily of CaF2, Al2O3 and CaO, along with minor concentrations of SiO2, MgO etc. The emission of fluoride vapour from the molten slag causes several environmental and health problems, triggering a need to develop and reduce the fluoride content in the ESR flux. The present study aims to develop low-CaF2 alternatives to commercial ESR fluxes without compromising on productivity and the surface quality of the refined ingot. Thus, the modification in chemical composition needs to satisfy properties like electrical resistivity, viscosity and liquidus temperature, essential for efficient ESR operation. Since electrical resistivity and viscosity are highly dependent on the ionic structure of the molten slag, it is important to understand the effect of compositional modification on the structure of the flux. The present study employs Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopy to investigate the structural variations in the modified fluxes, especially the effect of changing SiO2 concentration, in comparison with conventional CaF2-rich fluxes. Additionally, thermal analysis (Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)) has been carried out to characterise the melting behaviour of the fluxes. The findings are compared with simulations carried out using the FactSage™ software, ver 8.3 (GTT Technologies, Aachen, Germany). Simultaneous analysis of liquidus temperature and the structure is expected to help in identifying the practical suitability of modified ESR flux compositions for industrial implementation.

HIGHWALL MINING - DECISION TO MINEUlan had completed operations in the first Open Cut area due to high stripping ratios and the presence of geological features which destroyed a significant portion of the coal in the upper part of the seam. Sampling and analysis of mineral deposits need to be executed without fear or favour of financial or personal impacts. Examples are given to illustrate the effects of departures, witting and unwitting, from correct use of appropriate techniques and/or equipment with emphasis on exploration and mining of porphyry copper deposits of the Pacific Rim. Some of the results of errors on the low and high sides of true value in exploration, resource or reserve estimations and in production caused by sampling and/or sample preparation mistakes, faulty practices, equipment and/or analysis are considered.

Many of the large refrigeration plants used in, the cooling systems on deep South African gold mines are situated on surface where they are exposed to seasonally and diurnally varying climatic conditions, and to a diurnally varying demand for cooling made by the mine. It has been traditional to accommodate the seasonal variation in climate by manual control applied to the plants at appropriate times of the year, and the plants have normally been specified to conform passively to the diurnal variations. This paper introduces new strategies for the active automatic control of the plants on a diurnal cycle, and shows that attractive benefits in energy and chilled water resource management can be accrued through the use of these strategies. The results have been derived through the modelling and simulation of a representative refrigeration plant.

In this paper, the history of Japanese coal and gas outbursts is presented and circumstances and countermeasures at the time cf outbursts are summarized statistically. Then the present meth- ods for prevention used practically in Japan are introduced. From statistics, it was reconfirmed that Japanese coal and gas outbursts have occur- ed frequently in the district of geological disturbance, symptoms immediately before out- burst occurrence were the phenomena in connec- tion with failure of a coal seam and outbursts have occurred many times when the number of boreholes had not been sufficient to degas. One of the principal protective method adopted in Japan is the large diameter gas drainage boring which also posesses a stress relief effects. There is a tendency to make diameter of borehole larger to increase both stress relief and degassing effects.

The influence of three important para- meters which affect the induration of iron-ore pellets, viz temperature, time, and lime content, have been assessed in terms of internal pellet structure and commonly-used pellet quality criteria. The pellets studied were produced from a typical hematite ore from the Pilbara area of Western Australia, using a 25 cm dia. pot-grate test rig. Isothermal laboratory induration tests were conducted in accordance with a statistically-planned programme. The internal structures were studied by optical microscopic examination of polished sections of the test pellets. The effects of SFCA (silico- ferrite of calcium and aluminium) and slag formation, matrix consolidation and grain modi- fications were studied, and have been related to pellet properties and to the time/temperature histories produced by the firing conditions chosen. The implications of the data for commercial pellet plant operations are discussed.

Blasting is one of the most important operations involved in surface coal mining. The removal of over-burden waste in surface coal mines of India had experienced many improvements in terms of blasting, explosives selection, blast design, equipment selection, deployment. etc. Two case studies of very large surface coal mines have particular importance in their blasting operations. Both these units have been equipped with large capacity excavating machines, hauling units and also have some difficult mining situations. Blasting is done in benches in close proximity to human dwellings and over coal seams developed by underground methods with problems of high wall stability etc, as well. The various steps taken to improve the blasting operations ensure smooth operation of the equipment to meet the targetted coal production.

Widely diverse mechanisms exist for the action of a range of selective sulphide flotation depressants. Collector desorp- tion, leaching, competitive adsorption, formation of hydrophilic reaction-product coatings, action as reducing agents, and action as lattice-oxidizing agents are discussed. Detailed attention is focused on the latter two mechanisms. Recent works on copper depressants particularly for copper-molybdenum separations, and oxidizing agents enabling arsenopyrite- pyrite separations, are presented and discussed.

Computer-based block modelling of orebodies is now used at Renison Tin mine for the estimation of ore reserves. It is considered that this has resulted in improved reserve estimation for complex 'stratafault' orebodies. The results for all orebody types are more easily understood by the mine planning section and provide greater scheduling capability than those from the previous manual isoline reserve estimation method. A structural overview of the deposit can be gained by combining geological block models for the various orebodies. It is anticipated that upon completion of block modelling for all the orebodies the time spent on the annual ore reserve estimate will be significantly reduced.

Structural geological information is widely used at the Mt Whaleback Mine, Newman, WA. Recent improvements in the structural understanding of Mt Whaleback are providing a very cost-effective way of reducing geological risk, improving the economics of mining, optimising pit design and addressing safety problems. The structure of the Mt Whaleback orebody is highly complex and has a significant influence not only on iron ore genesis but also on pit wall stability. A team approach between the Structural Geology and Geomechanics Groups has been providing excellent results to reduce geological risk at Mt Whaleback.

The Pasminco Century Mine (PCML) is located 250 kilometres north-north-west of Mt Isa in Queensland. As one of the worldÆs largest zinc mines, PCML comprises mining and milling operations at Lawn Hill, concentrate filtering and shipping facilities at Karumba in the Gulf of Carpentaria, and a 304 km slurry pipeline connecting the two operations.Mineralisation at Century occurs in the upper part of the Lawn Hill formation and is comprised of siltstones, shale and sandstone. Pyrite occurs immediately above the mineralised sequence, and throughout the footwall carbonaceous shale forming the lower proportion of the deposit. Zinc predominantly occurs as sphalerite (ZnS) and lead as galena (PbS). These sulfides are very fine-grained and may oxidise rapidly upon exposure. The pyrite, sphalerite and galena are the main potential sources of acid rock drainage (ARD) or heavy metal leachate at the mine site.To minimise the generation of ARD in the waste rock dumps, they are constructed in a specific manner and waste rock is classified into the following three classes based on competence and acid forming/consuming capabilities:Class 1: Competent rock, non-acid forming or acid-consuming material. Class 2: Non-competent, non-acid forming or acid-consuming material. Class 3: Acid-forming material. The generalised Waste Rock Dump Design for current operations comprises an outer zone of Class 1 material and inner zone with Class 2 and 3 material. Limestone is the Class 1 material used for both its structural support and acid neutralising capacity. Reserves of limestone at the mine site are limited. Net acid generation (NAG) tests confirm that a mix of limestone and shales can be net acid consuming.Field based and laboratory based trials have been established at PCML to quantify blending levels of limestone and shale that will produce leachates both neutral in pH and low in metal/salt concentrations. This paper will discuss the first six months results (of a two-year sampling program) from the trials.

The island chains of the Western Pacific (Fig. 1), on account of their related origin, and the similarity of the rocks that compose them, constitute in the main a most homogeneous mineral province. They lie in a complex "mobile" zone of the earth's crust, that formed a geosynclinal area separating the continental margins of Australia and South-Eastern Asia (the so-called Sundaland) from each other, and from the margin of the Pacific Ocean proper (FIg. 2). The whole region was drowned at the close of the Ice Age, as a result of the rise of sea-level that accompanied the melting of the great ice caps in the polar regions, leaving only the higher portions as islands and peninsulas, many of them separated only by shallow seas or "shelves."The geosyncline was infilled with Mesozoic and Tertiary sediments that have undergone varying intensities of folding and metamorphism, and has been subject to intermittent periods of volcanic activity, continuing into the present. Midway between the two continental margins there is a narrow belt of pronounced negative gravity anomalies, with an extraordinary S-shaped convolution in the vicinity of the Banda Sea and Celebes, that marks the core of this unstable region. The folding within the "mobile" zonetrends parallel to it, so that the islands in its vicinity, which are regions elevated by folding, are all elongated in the strike direction of the folds. This explains not only the linear shape of Sumatra and Java, but the arc of islands enclosing the Banda Sea, and the peculiar shape of Celebes.Parallel to the belt of negative anomalies, at a close remove from it, is the line of Recent, or active volcanoes, that extends along the whole length of Sumatra and Java...

Broken Hill has a long history of mining and it is without doubt a world-class deposit. It has seen production since 1885, notwithstanding the strikes that made the city infamous in days gone by and has given rise to three of the nation's leading mining companies; BHP, North and CRA. Prior to the formation of Pasminco in 1988, the mining and exploration activities were undertaken by separate companies who were business competitors and tended to operate in relative isolation. There were a few notable exceptions such as the Central Geological Survey of 1936 - 38 (Gustafson, 1939; Gustafson et al, 1950) and the Mine Managers' Association. The latter sponsored many university based research projects. At a local level there was good communication and cross fertilisation within this remote outback centre through personal contacts and professional bodies such as The AusIMM. Pasminco was formed by the merging of the lead-zinc interests of CRA Ltd and North Broken Hill Ltd. In Broken Hill this meant the joining together of North Mine and ZC Mines, the two largest mines then operating on the Line of Lode, to form Pasminco Mining Broken Hill Operations. Seismic methods have become common for the detection of low-throw faults ahead of underground coal mining. Surface seismic methods cannot theoretically be used where dykes occur, because seismic waves transmit from the surface down to the seams, and reflect back to the surface. Consequently, where sub-vertical structure such as dykes occurs, the surface seismic method fails.The ability of seismic methods to image dykes depends on the geometry used, the dyke thickness and the seismic wave propagation mode in relation to dyke composition and internal structure. Surface seismic methods find it difficult to distinguish between faults/fractures and very thin dykes (1-2m in thickness) when the dyke's thickness is less than the seismic wavelength. Consequently, borehole seismic methods have to be used to detect the presence of such thin dykes.

Improvements in technology do not necessarily lead to higher profits: the benefit of lower costs can be captured by coal buyers, governments and workforce rather than by the colliery operators. The economic impact of longwall mining in Australia has been critically assessed to provide lessons for the future. For a variety of reasons, companies investing in longwall equipment in the past five years have generally not achieved an adequate return on the funds invested. The effect of technological innovation must be examined in the light of competitive forces operating in the market. Projections of cost reduction trends in the coal industry have been applied to a world cost model to provide a picture of the coal industry in the year 2000.
