The world steel industry underwent rapid growth from 1950 to 1970. Since that time, production growth has been relatively slow, with declining production in the developed countries and increasing production in some newly developing countries. Since 1970, Western World crude steel production has been static at around 450 million tonnes, with cycles around this level in a 100 million tonnes band.

Drill performance monitoring studies were recently completed at the Fording River mine, British Columbia. Microprocessor-based instrumen- tation and data analysis techniques were developed with the objective to improve short and long term mine planning. Data analysis permitted the identification of thicknesses and interfaces between soft/hard zones at depth based upon the recorded responses of the drill. Data clearly con- trast the soft coal seams and harder waste rock units based on variations in recorded drill rotary speed and torque, hydraulic downpressure, bail- ing air pressure and instantaneous rate of penetration. These parameters were monitored and recorded at 10 cm sampling intervals. Processed drill data was correlated with gamma logs, an existing means for locating coal seams and distinguishing between waste units. Current development of a pattern recognition module aims towards automated interpretation of drill data, identifying micro-and macro-geological and geomechanical rock mass characteristics. Delay between acquiring, processing and interpret- ing the drill data for practical use by mine personnel should be minimized. Integration of this technology with the mine's current main-frame based Mine Engineering Application System software will enable more accurate and timely annlication of the nrocessed drill data.

Slow seismotectonic movements along the in-clined deep fault zone under the compressional horizontal stresses are supposed to be the prin-cipal mechanism controlling the structure and processes in the active ocean margins. Within the scope of the plane strain problem a simple 2-D geomechanical model for the evolution of an island arc system is investigated. We consider a homogeneous elastic half-plane with a shea-ring surface crack. The key element of the model is viscous interaction between the crack sides, the viscisity varying with depth. The model dif-fers from the classical steady-state mode of subduction by nonstationary creep processes on deep faults and by possibly cyclical development of the transition zone.A numerical modeling of the stress-strain state within the island arc system through time was carried out using a semianalytical approach. The results of simulation are in good agreement with geological, geophysical, and seismological data.

The problem of rockbursts presents a serious threat to many deep, hard-rock mines. For several decades, the owners and managers of affected mines have been concious of the urgent need to control rockbursts but, to a large extent, their efforts have been hampered by a lack of fundamental knowledge. This paper will attempt to outline the extent and depth of present understanding of the phenomenon and to show how better control may be achieved in the future. It is suggested that it is helpful to distinguish two aspects of the problem: that pertaining to the mechanism of the seismic event and that associated with the mechanism of damage. Understanding damage mechanism will enable development of better support techniques while proper understanding of the source mechanism could lead to better mine planning and improved stoping layouts. In this regard, the practice of partial extraction with systematic strike stabilising pillars is discussed in some detail.

The Bulli and Wongawilli Seams, the two principal sources of coking coal for the Port KKembla steelworks of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd., vary in rank and in type over the Southern and -South Western Coalfields. The Bulli Seam, ranging widely in type, produces coke varying from weak to strong. The Wongawilli Seam, more consistent in type, produces coke of more consistent strength, but considerably less strong than that from the best Bulli Seam coal. Plans of seam variation show the regional trends in rank and type for each sear. The strongest coke is derived from coal containing between 45 and 55 per cent vitrinite, m.m.f. This is obtainable from the Bulli Sean in a zone embracing Bulli and Appin Colleries.

When coal mining first commenced in Australia, the principle objective was low cost production with development directed toward recovery of 'easy' coal. Future expans- ion of these early mines into major under- ground operations was neither envisaged nor planned. As the demand for coal grew, these mines were expanded to increase output. however, the absence of initial ventilation planning brought about ad hoc systems wh;ch required continual repair and upgrading. These systems proved satisfactory in the short term because the majority of undergrouni coal mining operations were carried out at relatively shallow depths where gas emission rates were low. By comparison, coal is now being won at depths exceeding 500 metres with a corresponding increase in gas flow from the working seams and adjacent strata. The following paper addresses, firstly, the planning and institution of a ventilation system in a mine where previous inefficiencies were many, and secondly, the value of pre- planning a mine ventilation system in the early stages of mine development, and the need to continually review and upgrade the plan to account for unforeseen ^hanges.

The Wonthaggi coalfield is in South Gippsland, about 90 miles southeast of Melbourne. It is situated on the down-faulted block of the South Gippsland highlands that lies south of the Kongwak fault, between the Powlett River and the sea (Fig. 1). The coal, which is of Jurassic age, occurs in two small, and intensely faulted, limnic basins, that lie on either side of a concealed ridge of Silurian sediments. The coal was first found as thin seams outc1'opping in the cliffs at Cape Paterson, but the seams that are worked at Wonthaggi are concealed beneath a veneer of Cainozoic sands that covers the Jurassic strata, and were found by boring.The c9al seams are worked by the State Coal Mine, which was opened in 1909 to ensure a supply of coal for the Victorian railways, following a prolonged strike in the Newcastle field of New South Wales. The structural pattern of Victoria shows the presence of EW, NW, NE as well as the more readily recognised NNW factors commonly associated with the goldfields. ENE and WNW trends are also present. This structural lattice affects all rocks of the State. Landsat imagery shows that the EW, NW and NE structural elements are closely related spatially to the distribution of Palaeozoic igneous intrusives, Cainozoic volcanic vents as well as all historically important gold mines. It is suggested that the EW, NW and NE structural grid visible on landsat imagery is a reflection of the structure of a mid-crustal layer situated between 3.5 and 17 kms below the surface. The points of intersection of the structural elements of the mid-crustal layer offer most favourable loci for the escape of energy in the form of heat. The correlation between the distribution of igneous plutons, volcanic vents and centres of mineralisation, all reliant on high levels of energy for their formation, indicates the stability of the structures of the mid-crustal layer since early Palaeozoic times. The deep level crustal structures are believed to be, related to the release of stresses placed on the crust since early Palaeozoic times by the rotation of the Earth. A geological model that accommodates the presence of a mid-crustal layer as well as the complexities of the recognised orogenic cycles of southeast Australia is suggested. All 1 000 kg Au reef and deep lead mines fall within 1.5 and 2.5 km respectively of strong linears associated intimately with plutons and volcanic vents. Future exploration of the State is more likely to meet with success if it too is confined to the evaluation of these and similar linears. The mode of mineralisation of any one centre will depend upon the temperature, pressure and geochemical gradients operating on the migrating mineralising fluids as well as the structures in the host rocks. These factors are likely to have varied considerably from one centre of mineralisation to the next and consistency of mineral isation form and depth should not be expected along the length of any single Linear.

Commencing in 1956, Rio TInto Australian Exploration Pty Limited in association with Electrolytic Zinc Co of Australasia, Limited, has been carrying out a mineral prospecting program in North-West Tasmania over an area of about 4000 square miles.The program has comprised extensive airborne geophysical surveys, detailed geological mapping, ground geophysical and geochemical investigations. Out of the wealth of new data, and the examination of previous records, has emerged a new structural concept of regional ore control and distribution in North-West Tasmania. This roncept stems from the discovery of an ancient 'fossil' rift valley (graben), named the Owen Rift Valley, along which are located the major mines of the area and numerous well-known prospects. The known mines and prospects from north to south include Mt Bischoff (tin); the Pinnacles (zinc, lead, ropper); the Chester (pyrites); Rosebery-Hercules (lead, zinc, ropper, silver, gold); Mt Tyndall (lead, ropper, zinc); Comstock and Tasman (copper, lead, zinc); Mt Lyell (copper, pyrites, gold); Mt Jukes and Mt Darwin (ropper). The identification of the West Coast (Owen Conglomerate) Range as a fossil rift valley is due to Or B Campana, who carried out extensive geological mapping and interpretation work, and who, with S B Dickinson, are the senior authors of this paper.S B Dickinson, who introduced B Campana to the geological problems of West Tasmania, had previously investigated the Mt Lyell and Rosebery mining fIeld, to which reference is made in this work.D King assisted in the regional mapping and in providing numerous data on the mineral distribution of the area.R S Matheson rontributed to the fmdings on ore emplacement and rontrol in the discussions held on this subject. The concentrating plant of the Broken Hill South Limited was described in Proceedings No. 44, Australasian Institute Mining and Metallurgy, December, 1921, by Wainwright and Read. It was erected on the present site in 1907 and 1908.From that date, the plant has undergone various alterations consistent with metallurgical improvements. By 1925, the timber work of the gravity secti"on had seriously deteriorated, so much so, that, when the machinery was working, the floors and supports vibrated badly, causing heavy maintenance costs.In 1928, it was decided to erect a new gravity-treatment section, to be followed later by a new flotation section.

In the new refinery, at the works of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Proprietary Limited, situated at Port Pirie, South Australia, the refining routine is similar to that carried on in the old one in that bullion is progressively refined first for arsenic and antimony, then for copper and gold, then for silver, and finally for zinc. However, actual procedure differs in that each refining operation is now conducted continuously, whereas in the old refinery intermittent batch treatment was practised.The early experimental work was concerned solely with the development of the continuous desilverising process, which, in addition to continuous treatment, embraces the novel feature of conjugate solution formation with consequent production of a silver product relatively high in silver and low in lead.

A strong correlation between the reduction degradation index (RDI) of production sinter and the titanium content of the sinter mix was identified at the Ruukki sintering plant between 2000 and 2004. The titanium distribution in different mineral phases was studied using samples from pot sintering tests. Titanium additions were made using two different materials: rutile and crushed titanium-bearing haematite pellets. While both titanium additions clearly increased the RDI, titanium seemed to favour secondary haematite. The study focused on the effect of titanium in haematite, because haematite is reduced to magnetite in the RDI test. During the haematite-magnetite reduction, reduction degradation was observed. To increase accuracy, the phenomenon was investigated first by sintering and then reducing synthetic minerals under controlled laboratory conditions at the University of Oulu. The effect of titanium oxide in solid solution in magnetite on the magnetite to haematite transformation rate was studied first in order to simulate the final stage of the sintering process. In other experiments, haematite samples doped with 0.5, 2.0 and 5.0 wt per cent titanium oxide were studied using thermogravimetry under a controlled gas atmosphere (CO/CO2/H2/N2). Sintered samples were reduced using the same gas composition as in the RDI test. Polished sections for optical microscopy and SEM-EDS analysis were prepared from both reduced and oxidised samples and unreduced sintered samples. The titanium oxide content of haematite had a clear effect on reduction degradation of the samples. Furthermore, increasing titanium oxide content in solid solution in magnetite radically accelerated the oxidation rate. Similar observations regarding the effects of titanium have been reported earlier, but this was the first time the effect of very small additions of titanium were shown to deteriorate blast furnace burden quality and a reason suggested behind the process.

The formation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold \lincs 1't% Ltd hati pla,xd all the major the gold producing areas adjacent to the city of Kalgoorlie/Boulder under one management, enabling the development of the 'Super Pit'. This has facilitated the economic optimisation of the resource. Optimisation has been achieved by the timely collection and presentation of data and the use of these data to reduce costs and improve planning procedures.In particular the following issues have been addressed:ò the reduction of the impact of the mining activity on the adjacent urban population centre,ò implementation of safety procedures for mining through underground voids,ò the determination of the optimum bench height and mining method for ore production benches and blast design. This system is fundamentally based on maintaining a high degree of selectivity while achieving a balance of relatively low unit operating costs,ò assessment of the comparable benefits of contractor versus owner operated earth moving equipment, andò the development of effective ore body models, production reconciliation and the long term mine planning procedures to facilitate effective strategic planning.

The extinction of zinc from steelmaking dusts has been studied with a laboratory scale reduction-vapour deposition (RVD) process in the absolute pressure and temperature ranges of 13 - 1300 Pa and 1333 - 1513 K respectively. This process consists of pre-reduction of iron oxide by carbonaceous agent, carbothermic reduction of zinc oxide under reduced pressure to produce zinc deposits and subsequent re-evaporation of the deposits to liquedify the zinc. In the RVD, the gas mixture of Zn and CO quenched from the hot zone is separated into Zn deposit and CO which is transferred to the pumping system. The Zn are a layer of fine metallic zinc powders accumulated on the cold wall and removed to the vacuum distillation chamber. The experimental works have been carried out according to the following items: carbothennic reduction of zinc oxide under vacuum, carbothermic reduction o zinc ferrite under vacuum, and 3. distillation of the Zn deposits. It has been concluded from these experimental results that the recovery of metallic zinc from the EAF dusts is successful by this process, and a new concept for a practical zinc winning process has been proposed.

Solid Energy New Zealand is developing an extension of its Rotowaro open cast coal mine near Huntly. This large 8 year, 11 million tonne opencast coal mine, referred to as the Awaroa Project, is fundamental to Solid Energy's medium term business strategy and meets its open pit coal resource needs while further resources are developed for the long term. Equally importantly the project is also fundamental to meeting New Zealand's energy requirements in the face of growing demands, a dwindling gas resource, and dry winters creating hydropower shortages. This project with its national significance in the current energy climate, its significance to Solid Energy as a business and its significant size has been consented against a backdrop of criticism of the Resource Management Act and the introduction of the 2003 amendment to the Act. As is common practice for this type of project Solid Energy conducted a significant technical programme in order to complete a comprehensive assessment of environmental effects. Solid Energy also has an active programme of community and interested party consultation and this programme formed the basis for project based consultation with local residents, regulatory bodies and iwi. As a result of the approach taken the environmental effects of the project were shown to be no more than minor and Environment Waikato considered that the project should be processed under the limited notification provisions of the RMA amendment. The project was processed under RMA quickly and efficiently and consents were granted within 6 months of lodgement. The RMA and its 2003 amendment provided a good framework for dealing with this project and did not impede the process of development of this important energy resource.

Fatigue is the primary cause of failure of structural and mechanical components subject to dynamic loading. Recognition of this basic fact and the development of appropriate techniques and details are important in the design and repair of off highway trucks (OHTs). The frames and appendages of OHTs and other mobile plant used in the Pilbara are subject to tough operating conditions. Any fatigue-prone details quickly show up and become a maintenance liability of considerable concern. Much of this equipment is approaching the limit of its fatigue life and maintenance managers face decisions on whether to repair or replace. Even new equipment often contains some poor details which suffer distress soon after commissioning. In those cases a repair is required which will reinstate the detail to its original intended design life. Repair details must be practical and cost effective. They must also be tailored to the capability and expertise available in the field or in local manufacturers' establishments. This is particularly important where original equipment was manufactured overseas and long delivery times are involved. Lessons are drawn from components which have failed, using the evidence constructively, to provide an upgraded part or an improved substitute. With the experience now available it is relatively easy to extrapolate to cover new problem areas. This paper describes specialised techniques of mechanical fastening and detailing for low fatigue susceptibility, built up over many years of experience with OHTs and other mining plant and equipment in the Pilbara.

Some recent and current research and development projects relating to strip type open cut coal mining are reviewed. The projects include a dragline-hopper-truck mining system, an overburden slusher system, improvement of dragline operations, continuous excavation and conveying of overburden materials, and a steep angle coal conveying system. Most of these projects offer prospects for reducing costs in deep strip mining operations, but only the overburden slusher project has the potential for large cost reductions. A project on highwall mining of coal has demonstrated that this coal mining system is viable and capable of achieving high productivity rates. Production highwall mining operations are now starting to become established in Australia.

Attention is drawn to the largest eruptions with dense rock equivalent (D.R.E.) volumes approx-imating 50 km3. These have been strongly clustered during the last 40 000 years, with 11 recognised in the period 35 000 to 22 000 years ago, and 10 in about the last 9000 years, but none in the period 22 000 to 9000 years ago. With the latest such eruption, at Tambora, only 175 years ago, it is likely that we remain in a period of increased activity. During the last 100 000 years, roughly the period during which modern Homo sapiens has existed as a species, there has only been one eruption an order of magnitude larger (>_ 500 km3 D.R.E.). This took place at Lake Toba, Sumatra, about 75 000 years ago, and is estimated to have deposited ash to a thickness of a centimetre or so in parts of Ethiopia, Somaliland, Saudi Arabia and Iran, and to a thickness of a few millimetres in the eastern Mediterranean. The average interval between global eruptions of this magnitude is probably about 40 000 to 50 000 years. Insufficient work on the Quaternary history of volcanoes has been carried out to suggest where the next such eruption might occur. At Yellowstone, which has been well studied, the average interval between very large explosive eruptions is about 700 000 ¦ 120 000 years.As a prerequisite for magnitude-frequency analysis of eruptions, and hazard and risk impact assessments, it is important to classify past eruptions in a consistent manner. In an attempt to find a universally applicable method to estimate order of magnitude D.R.E. volumes from the distribution of airfall tephra, an empirical correction has been derived for the elongation of tephra dispersal fans due to wind. Dispersion distances for various thicknesses of tephra, recalculated for windless conditions, have been obtained from a study of about 40 tephra isopach maps for which D.R.E. volumes have been calculated, and a range of distances derived, equivalent to D.R.E. volumes from 106 m3

The paper presents details of borehole instrumentation schemes for the purposes of monitoring rock and fill deformations associated with groundwater in underground and surface coal mines. The instruments are described which measure rock mass displacements, permeability changes and alterations to hydrology. Methods of installation are detailed and the applicability of instruments discussed. Reduction and interpretation of results are detailed.

In dense medium processes for the beneficiation of minerals the consumption of medium (generally ferrosilicon) represents a major component of the operating cost. This provides a strong incentive for improvements in heavy medium recovery circuit design and operation. A major thrust in heavy medium plant design over the past decade has therefore been towards circuits which reduce medium losses. In this paper recent trends in plant design are examined in relation to the factors infl uencing circuit performance and medium losses. Operational details ' which have a significant effect on losses are discussed and illustrated by means of plant and pilot plant test data, with particular emphasis on the performance of wet drum magnetic separators. While the emphasis is on reducing the consumption of the high-cost ferrosilicon medium used in minerals beneficiation, most of the principles described in this paper are equally relevant to the design and operation of magnetite recovery circuits for coal preparation plants.
