The paper describes developments since 1959 in major excavators to meet the demand for higher outputs of overburden and coal under less favourable batter conditions than used hitherto in the coal deposits of the Latrobe Valley. Particular reference is made to investigations of designs of bucket wheel head configurations for the digging of these flat batters on high faces, and examples are given of the wide use of models inthese studies. An explanation is given of how solution of these problems and surface conditions unfavourable for wheeled transport confirmed selection of the long boom rather than the compact type of bucket wheel excavator for the Latrobe Valley applications.The past decade has seen advances in the manufacture in Australia of components for excavators and similar machines. The history of Australian manufacture of components for major brown coal excavators is traced;and reference is made to study and application of Australian and overseas (mainly German) codes and practices in the design and construction of machines made partly here and partly in Germany.A section of the paper deals with advances in electrical engineering for large excavators in Australia and its interdependence with mechanical design and construction.Finally, as an example of the versatility of the bucket wheel excavator, a description is given of a recent application for the mining of mineral sands in northern N.S.W.

The deep seafloor in Papua New Guinea's proposed Exclusive Economic Zone appears to be a gold-rich province in the same sense as the territory above sea level. Two significant sites with polymetallic massive sulphide deposits forming today are known on neovolcanic ridges in the Manus Basin. Their high precious metal contents have led to renewed interest in the issue of exploiting seafloor mineral deposits. The prospects of finding other, possibly larger deposits in the region appear substantial. This paper reviews current data on seafloor deposits in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and raises some issues relating to future commercial exploration and mining of the sea floor. One of the known PNG deposits could become a prime candidate for the trials needed to develop technology, establish costs, and minimise environmental impact.

Trace fossils have been found in Bolivian Silurian sediments in "La Iumhre" area close to La Paz-Bolivia.Tracks, are good indicators of depth and environment. A detailed study of the ichnogenus is made.The depth and environmental deposits are analyzed to determine the facies. It was shown that the trace fossils of Silurian sediments in La Paz belong to the Zoophvcos and Nereites facies.

The changing characteristics of raw materials has highlighted the limitations that conventional vibrating screens have in the handling of fine wet sticky materials. These' limitations have led to the development of a totally new concept of screening, the Rotating Probability Screen. Incidental to the progress of a geological survey of the Kalgoorlie goldfield during 1927-28 a number of specimens of telluride minerals were obtained, chiefly with the help of Mr. F. G. Brinsden, general manager of the South Kalgurli mine, and Mr. Ernest Williams, general manager of the Boulder Perseverance mine. This collection was supplemented by a number of small specimens, including the rare copper telluride, which were collected and preseryed from the Kalgurli mine by Mr. A. E. Paton, and also by a few miscellaneous specimens from the collection o{ Mr. S. F. C. Cook, of the Palace Hotel, Kalgoorlie.An extensive knowledge of the rare tellurium-bearing minerals was compiled during the last century from occurrences in Transylvania and Colorado. The recognition of different species has been based on chemical analyses and crystallographic measurements. In a few species there has been an absence of crystalline form, and these, together with the discoveries in this century of rickardite and "weissite" muthmannite and empressite, have depended chiefly on the chemical analysis for identification. On the other hand, the crystalline form of nagyagite and stiitzite has been described in detail, while their precise chemical formulae were doubtfully defined.

This paper presents updated interpretations of controls on mineralisation in C Deposit and highlights structural features that influence the geometry of mineralisation domains used in resource estimation. The Area C mining lease is located in the central Hamersley Province, ~100 km WNW of Newman, Western Australia, and contains resources of approximately 1100 Mt of Marra Mamba and Brockman iron mineralisation. C Deposit is located within Area C, on the northern limb of the Weeli Wolli anticline, and mineralisation is hosted predominantly in the Mt Newman Member of the Marra Mamba Formation. Production from C Deposit began in August 2003, following mining of a 950 000 tonne bulk sample in 2002. Recent mapping in the bulk-sample pit and updated interpretations by BHP Billiton geologists have highlighted the significance of structural controls on mineralisation in C Deposit and their influence on the thickness of mineralisation, which ranges from 20 to 80 metres. Structural controls on the geometry and continuity of mineralised domains include south-dipping thrust faults that developed along the Mount Newman/West Angela contact, folds associated with thrust fault development, steeply dipping stratigraphic contacts in the hanging wall of the thrust faults, and gently north-dipping stratigraphic contacts. Thrust faults and folds in C Deposit are significant for two main reasons: their formation resulted in the thickening of the main ore-hosting units in the Mount Newman Member; and faults and folded stratigraphic contacts provided conduits for supergene metasomatic-enrichment processes that produce high-grade iron mineralisation.The implications of this interpretation for the definition of the resource estimation domains are discussed, and suggestions are made for a better integration of geology into the data acquisition and estimation process.

A multicommodity exploration programme was mounted in the 1970s by CRA Exploration Pty. Limited over a major part of the southern Murray Basin in Victoria. Commodities sought were brown and black coal, gold, uranium, diamonds, titanium and zirconium rich heavy minerals, and base metals. An area of 40 000 km2 was held under exploration licences by the Company. Exploration techniques used were literature research, airborne magnetics and gamma ray spectrometry, drilling, and geophysical well logging. Targets were defined in both the Tertiary basin sediments and the underlying Palaeozoic sedimentary and igneous rocks. Although exploration is continuing, large resources of brown coal and low grade titanium rich heavy minerals have already been discovered. Exploration for uranium was abandoned in accordance with statutory requirements. The search for significant resources of the other commodities has not been successful.

Porphyry copper, gold and molybdenum deposits form in subduction-related settings in association with calc-alkalic or alkalic magmatism. Hydrothermal alteration assemblages are zoned, with potassic cores and propylitic haloes overlain by extensive domains of clay alteration and silicification (lithocaps). Copper sulfides, gold and molybdenite typically occur in veins or hydrothermal breccias, and less significantly as wall rock replacements. Epithermal deposits may form above or to the side of porphyry systems, and may be juxtaposed into the core of a porphyry deposit if rapid uplift and exhumation occur through the life of the magmatic-hydrothermal system. Volcanichydrothermal breccia pipes (ædiatremesÆ) commonly form late in the life of a porphyry system. They may contain clasts of porphyry-style mineralisation, and can host significant epithermal gold resources. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The Bungaroo Valley hosts a concealed Tertiary channel iron deposit (CID) along a 17 km stretch of its length. Bungaroo Valley is approximately 0.5 km wide upstream at its easternmost extent, and 3.5 km wide downstream where it joins the Jimmawarrada Creek. The valley follows the axial trace of an anticline that plunges gently to the southeast, and the CID infills the valley. Mineralisation extends to a depth of 230 m below the surface, and almost the entire deposit occurs below the water table. Bungaroo Valley cuts through the Buckland Hills and is bounded to the north and south by steep scarps capped with the resistant Dales Gorge Member of the Brockman Iron Formation. Basement rocks are believed to be mostly Wittenoom Formation shales and dolomites, with Mount McRae Shale and Mount Sylvia Formation also present. Deep, localised depressions appear at the base of the CID sequence towards the north edge of the upstream section of the valley, while downstream the basal CID contact is relatively flat and shallow. In both cases the profile of the CID surface closely mirrors that of the basal contact. The localised depressions seen in the upstream basal CID contact produce significant variations in CID thickness of up to 100 m over short strike distances. This uneven palaeotopography is most likely due to eddying and waterfalls forming within the riverbed prior to CID deposition during a time when the water table was much lower than at present. It may also be associated with possible karsting in an underlying dolomite unit and subsequent syn- or post-depositional collapse of the overlying CID. The irregular basal contact of the Bungaroo CID sequence has implications for mining in terms of pit design and resource accessibility.

Gold mining in Vatukoula had been a low tonnage/high grade operation for much of its 55-year life. During 1991 it became clear that a change in direction was needed if the mine was going to continue to prosper. The challenges of ore reserves of only three years, the prevailing gold price and high infrastructure and fixed costs combined to force changes in mining strategy.A more productive mining method was required to lower the unit mining cost, lower the pay limit and make more effective use of the resource.The flat dipping mineralised faults or flatmakes had been mined by updip, handheld room and pillar methods with a more recent trackless development adaptation. Furthermore, up to 40 per cent of the resource was left in pillars and broken rock.

Firstly, electric analog models are discus- sed to show fluid streaming conditions. In these models the depth of blast at tuyere level, the height of the bath, the influ- ence of different angles of the furnace zones and the different possibilities of the root of the cohesive zone have been changed. Tests to define the influence at a large blast furnace are given. Secondly, the wear of carbon bricks in the hearth is examined under the influence of gas, slag and pig iron. Oxidation tests in a special scanning microscope with the pos- sibility of heating and gas treatment are shown. Wear mechanisms are discussed fora large blast furnace and proposals for im- provement are given. Finally, the possib- ilities and value of the temperature meas- urement in the hearth block are discussed.

Ashton Mining Limited is the operator of two wholly-owned gold mine/mill complexes at Laverton and Leonora. In addition, Ashton owns 43% of the Bardoc Joint Venture mine/mill complex, which is operated by Aberfoyle Pty Limited. All three of these operations are located in the Eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia (Figure 1). At Laverton, milling capacity is in the order of 1 million tonnes per year in 3 mills (Duketon 200,000 tpa, Cork Tree Well 650,000 tpa and Craiggiemore 150,000 tpa). These mills service a distance of 80 km, from Baneygo in the north to Craiggiemore in the south. Mineral tenements cover a 150 km long stretch of a series of sub-parallel mineralised structures. At Leonora, the Harbour Lights mill is designed to treat 750,000 tpa of sulphide ore, and has treated oxide ores at an annualised rate of over 1 million tonnes/year. The mill is supported by several tenement blocks that lie within a 50 km trucking radius of the mill. The most important of these is the Mertondale tenement block, which covers approximately 25km of the Mertondale Shear Zone.

A continued exploration programme has further defined the geology of the Tolukuma vein system, verified the resource indicated by Newmont, and identified potential for additional mineralisation. The resource at Tolukuma Hill, designated as Zone C, is a measured 440,000t @ 17g/t Au and 46g/t Ag with an additional indicated resource of 120,000t @ 16g/t Au. A diatreme breccia localised at an intersection of structures, and a relationship of gold to base metal sulphides, are highly indicative of a porphyry association. Typical epi-thermal features such as crustiform banded quartz and quartz pseudomorphing. platy calcite are also present and locally contain lesser gold mineral-isation. Pre-existing dilatant structures have acted as a host to the ore fluids, resulting in the formation of the semi-continuous Tolukuma-Gulbadi veins over a 1100m strike. A fluid flow model suggests that mineralising fluids were sourced from the diatreme margins and migrated laterally along dilatant structures. Bonanza gold grades are derived through fluid quenching in the flexure between a hanging wall split which hosts much of the Tolukuma Hill resource and the feeder graben structure. Thus, the relationship between the pre-mineral structural geometry and fluid upflow at the margins of a diatreme breccia, controls the ore setting. Potential for more ore remains within the Gufinis and the 120 veins as well as in the outlying Prospects.

The high pressure grinding rolls is one of the few new comminution devices that offer substantial savings when compared with traditional crushing and grinding circuits and with SAG milling. The machine has been well accepted in the cement industry, but mining companies have been more cautious in adopting this technology, partly because of wear and availability problems, and partly because of uncertainties in designing circuits which will deliver the power savings without complicating downstream processing. This paper addresses the latter problem by providing a model structure for predicting power draft and throughput from measurements made with small pilot scale high pressure rolls. Three existing models for predicting product size distributions are assessed and suggestions made for future work. The model structure comprises a power equation, incorporating measurements of torque and rolls speed previously used by the authors. Transport through the mill is assumed to be plug flow. Throughput is governed by the equilibrium gap between the rolls, which is determined both by machine settings and the physical properties of the feed material, including its size distribution. Therefore some form of physical testing in a model machine is required to determine throughput parameters. Results from copper and nickel ore experiments covering a wide range of machine conditions are presented and compared with model predictions. Model assumptions are discussed and directions for future work Suggested.

Sophisticated control systems require sufficient and reliable information from the process to be controlled. At the Pyhasalmi concentrator two novel measurements, a particle size indicator (PSI) and a mill level monitor (MLM), have led to significant progress in the control of the grinding circuit. The PSI and the MLM measurements have brought additional information from the process. The PSI has been an absolute prerequisite for determining the overall grinding circuit efficiency and the design of the integrated grinding and flotation control system. The MLM measurement has enabled studies on the volumetric filling of a mill to be utilised for maximising the mill throughput. The paper describes the operation principles of the PSI and MLM devices and the additional process information received. The results of a metallurgical pre-control audit are discussed and finally the design of the integrated control system is outlined.

Rock-breaker automation and remote operation improves the safety and efficiency of mining operations. This paper presents an overview of the Rocklogic rock-breaker automation system architecture that provides collision avoidance, automated parking and remote operation functionality. The system consists of a distributed computer control system that interfaces with sensors attached to the rock-breaker, the rock-breaker hydraulics and the site infrastructure. We present results of an automated Transmin rock-breaker installed in a production environment at an underground Australian mine site. The system has been in production use for over 900 days, during which there have been no reported collisions and 100 per cent adoption of the remote operation technology. As a result, Rocklogic has significantly improved the safety of rock-breaking operations and reduced the rock-breaking cycle time, thereby improving the site’s overall throughput.CITATION:Boeing, A and Douglas, E, 2014. The investigations conducted in the High Pressure Lab at the University of Missouri-Rolla demonstrated the ability of high pressure waterjets to excavate coal and minerals, disintegrate materials and as well as to comminute coal and minerals. Additional progress in comminution can be achieved if the compressive crushing principle commonly used at present is changed to one where particles are fragmented by the tensile growth of preexisting internal flaws or cracks, under internal waterjet pressure. This idea was studied in a number of tests. It covers tests with different jets imposed on coal and rock samples during compressive load as well as without any loading.
