Historic mining across the Bendigo goldfield reached an average mining depth of 750 m over an area of about 16 km by 4 km, with two shafts exceeding 1400 m. Mining ceased in the mid 1900s due in part to increased dewatering and ventilation demands. Water extraction technology of the day, combined with multiple mine ownership, did not allow uninterrupted and thus economic mining activity to prosper. Today Bendigo Mining Limited (BML) is targeting gold-bearing reefs beneath the water-filled historic mine workings. To ensure mining activity can proceed without the risk of water inrush, historic workings are being dewatered by submersible pumps in historic shafts and through a series of underground drain holes intersecting old workings. Due to the high heads involved, individual drain hole development requires rigorous safety control implementation and assessment prior to drilling. Water extracted via drain holes is pumped to the surface through a series of pipe lines and rising mains in conjunction with two staged pumping stations. Both stations are equipped with high-speed centrifugal pumps, each capable of pumping 40 L/s at a static head of approximately 300 m. BML, which operates beneath and within a large city, is confronted with unusual environmental and social challenges compared to many within the mining industry. The raw mine water, which contains elevated salt levels, is piped through residential areas and must comply with strict controls to prevent impacts on the surrounding environment. The final delivery point is BMLÆs water treatment plant at the north end of the city. The water treatment plant utilises chemical pretreatment and reverse osmosis. It is able to process 7 ML of mine water per day at full production. The product is approximately 5 ML of reusable irrigation quality water, which is made available to the Bendigo community for public gardens, sporting facilities and rural irrigation. The 2 ML of brine is directed to a purpose-built evaporation pond facility located 7 km north of the water treatment facility.

Mr Chairperson, respected leaders of the mining industry, ladies and gentlemen;   Good morning, Kiora, Nihao.   I am very honoured to give a speech to the 2005 New Zealand minerals conference. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to the Ministry of Economic Development to invite me to be part of this important event.   Today, I am going to talk about two themes: a brief introduction of ChinaÆs economic development, including ChinaÆs energy strategy; the good bilateral relations between China and New Zealand, its potential for further development and its relevance to our cooperation in the field of minerals and energy.   It is a well-known story that over the past 27 years, great changes have taken place in China. In 1978 when ChinaÆs reform and opening up just started, its gdp was near to only 150 billion usd dollars. By the year of 2004 it reached to 1.6 trillion usd, an average of yearly growth rate 9.4 per cent.   ChinaÆs great achievements are widely appreciated both in China and abroad. ChinaÆs development has not only improved the living standard of its own people, but also produced a huge market and brought about great opportunities for the world. Since ChinaÆs entry into WTO in 2001, China has imported near to 1.8 trillion usd dollars of goods, averaging a yearly imports of 500 billion usd dollars, creating for other countries and regions more than ten million jobs.   Our prediction is that in the next five years, ChinaÆs imports will be well over three trillion usd dollars. China will continue to serve as one of the leading growth engines for the future world economic development. Now China is on its great strive to achieve the goals of improving living standard for all the Chinese people. We are trying to reach a quadruple gdp of 2000 by the year of 2020, namely to reach gdp four trillion usd, a gdp per capita 3000 usd dollars.

Structural geological modelling is a process which results in a 3D computer model that represents the essence of the geological and structural understanding of an area and is presented in a way that is directly useable, typically by internal customer groups. BHP Iron Ore operates a number of open cut iron ore mines in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia. The largest mine is the Mt Whaleback Mine located at Newman close to the southern margin of the Pilbara Craton. The structurally complex Mt Whaleback Mine is the largest metalliferous single pit open cut mine in Australia with over 1.6 billion tonnes of original iron ore resource. Additional to the Mt Whaleback Mine, a number of satellite open cut iron ore mines are operated by BHP Iron Ore (BHPIO) in the Newman area. BHPIO also operates the Yarrie mine approximately 400 km north of Newman at the northern edge of the Pilbara Craton Most of the BHPIO mines are located in the Archean- Proterozoic Hamersley Province that overlies the Archean granite-greenstone terrain of the Pilbara Craton. The orebodies are considered to be the result of supergene enrichment of the approximately 2.5 Ga Brockman Iron Formation and the slightly older Marra Mamba Iron Formation. Folding represents the most prevalent and penetrative structural element in the Newman area. Four folding phases have been identified regionally (Fj, F2, F3, F5), while a more local folding deformation (F4) developed mainly in the Mt Whaleback and Orebody 29 mine area. A northeast trending, southeast dipping, 45 km long, high angle, normal fault zone, the Whaleback Fault Zone, cuts through the Mt Whaleback mine resulting in an approximately 1400 in gap in stratigraphy. Additionally, two large, low angle, normal faults, the East Footwall Fault and the Central Fault, are present at the Mt Whaleback Mine. During the formation of supergene orebodies, up to 40 - 45 per cent volume loss occurred resulting in local non-tectonic deformation in the orebodies.

Segregation of granular material is a very common phenomenon. Realised in a forced manner it is a basis of all separation processes in mineral processing, mainly classification and beneficiation. Spontaneous segregation, occurring under dynamic conditions and making possible mutual translocations of grains, is however an undesired phenomenon as a rule. It decreases the degree of blending of the material which in many cases is an important technological feature of the material. It should be noted that the segregation can be treated as the reverse phenomenon to blending. The importance and frequency of spontaneous segregation has caused many rules and technical solutions to be developed aimed at decreasing the possibility of the spontaneous segregation. However, not enough attention has been focused on an quantitative description of the phenomenon of segregation, either to ways of quantitatively evaluating segregation effects or to explanation of the influence of conditions under which the grained material exists on the occurrence of segregation and its degree. The paper presents the following topics: 1. new numerical indicator for evaluation of the segregation degree (and blending) of material contained in an arbitrary determined region is proposed; it is determined relative to the maximum possible degree of segregation of the given material when taking into account its individual properties; values of the indicator can be calculated effectively for an arbitrary material, also for ulticomponent material. 2. there is proposed a way of evaluating the state of segregation (or blending) of material in an arbitrary part of the region mentioned above, based on investigation of the gradient of distribution of the material features; algorithms of analytical procedures and calculations are presented for typical cases met in mineral processing; 3. results of initial experimental studies, both laboratory and industrial, concerning the effect of the chosen factors occurring in transport and storage of the material on its degree of segregation are presented; and 4. conclusions referring to the fundamental and practical significance of the results are also presented.

Massive sulphide ZnPbCuAg deposits in the Halls Peak district of northeastern NSW are of the submarine volcanogenic type. They occur as a number of small lenses enclosed in shale and epiclastic rocks, in association with felsic volcanics of early Permian age. The deposits crop out in steep terrain near the eastern edge of the New England plateau. Local relief of 700 m and slopes up to 50¦, coupled with an average annual rainfall of about 1000 mm has led to local severe landsliding in previously mined areas. Mining from the 1890's to the 1960's has also resulted in unconstrained drainage of heavy metal-bearing acid waters and physical dispersion of finer grained metalliferous sediments into the Chandler River. Waters emanating from the main landslide area, from underground workings and draining scattered unconfined stockpiles of massive sulphide ore have pH values of 3 to 4 and contain elevated contents of Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd and Fe. Chemical mobility of heavy metals into streams occurs under low pH conditions with Zn exhibiting the greatest dispersion. Increasing pH conditions downstream cause precipitation of Fe phases and coprecipitation of heavy metals. Physical dispersion of secondary metal-bearing minerals into the surrounding creeks results in wt% levels of Cu, Pb and Zn in the stream sediments thereby exceeding the regional background values by one to three orders of magnitude. Areas disturbed by mining are characterised by lack of vegetation, biomagnification of heavy metals into algae and lower plants, and partial recolonisation by metal-tolerant grass species (Snow Grass, Poa sieberana; Blady Grass, Lomandra longifolia). Rehabilitation measures will have to include landslide stabilisation, impervious sealing or removal of sulphidic materials, import of topsoil and revegetation by metal-tolerant, slow-growing native grass and shrub species.

Airblast overpressure legislative limits can be extremely difficult to meet throughout Australia, which has by far the most stringent limits of any nation in the world. As the difficulty in meeting the limits is strongly dependent on the scale of mining, it is not surprising that the Australian coal mining industry is experiencing particular difficulties in meeting these limits. Eight full scale overburden blasts have been modelled with respect to overpressure impact for a strip coal mine, involving both dragline (cast) blasting and pre-strip (non-cast) blasting. Overpressure levels in the range 100 to 125 dBL have been measured at distances varying from 2.4 to 5.7 km, and modelling has successfully estimated both the amplitude and shape of overpressure waveforms to within an average of 1.2 dBL. Typical errors of prediction are around 0.6 dBL. This accuracy of prediction has been achieved by considering the impact of only the face holes, and the accuracy of prediction of both shape and amplitude suggests that it is these holes which dominate the environmental overpressure impact at distances in the range two to six kilometres, for cast and pre-strip blasting operations. Modelling has been based upon the Elemental Overpressure Wavelet proposed by Richards and Moore (2002), incorporating actual hole coordinates, actual delay timing, and assumed delay scatter statistics. The incorporation of delay scatter statistics has been particularly significant, and allows the determination of the range over which the peak overpressure levels are expected to vary. To date, modelling has considered only the use of conventional pyrotechnic delays, though simple adjustment to the scatter definition would allow estimation of overpressure levels, and their variability, with electronic delays.

The five main ways in which coal is used are1. for electricity generation,2. as a lump fuel for domestic and industrial purposes,3. for gas making,4. for making carbon for chemical and metallurgicalindustry, and5. as a source of coal tar and coal-tar chemicals.In the past about 80 per cent of Victoria's brown coal has been used for power generation and the rest for making a lump fuel, in the form of briquettes. Some of these briquettes have been used for gas making, and a carbon industry based on them has recently been commenced, and could expand rapidly. However the enormous increases expected in power requirements, approximately a doubling every 10 years, will ensure that even if the manufacture of carbon increases dramatically and a large amount of coal is used for other purposes, the brown coal industry will always be dominated by power generation. As new fuels such as natural gas, oil, and nuclear fuel become available at competitive prices these will take their share of the power generation load.Natural gas or oil, or possibly pumped storage hydro, will almost certainly be used for all future peak-load stations, comprising around 40 per cent of the total installed generating capacity, but new base load stations will continue to be designed for brown coal operation until about the mid-1980s, by which time nuclear power stations will become competitive. By this time Victoria will have installed about 6000 MW capacity of brown coal stations, burning around 50 million tons/year of coal, compared with 18 million tons/year at present, with perhaps 15 million tons/year being used for other purposes.This consumption of 65 million tons/year should then remain fairly stable over the life of the power stations installed, well into the 21st century. Brown coal therefore appears to have an assured place in providinga major part of Victoria's fuel requirements, despite the diversification in fuel usage pattern which appears certain to occur with the recent developments in new fuel resources.

The introduction of cement into underground backfilling at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines to improve mining efficiencies gave rise to several major problems, the magnitude of which had not been anticipated. These problems were 1. A loss of recovery in the milling circuit due to the presence of cement 2. The presence of cement-rich slime layers on the surface of the fills 3. The introduction of a safety hazard due to the slippery nature of the surface of cemented fills 4. The deposition of cemented slimes on the levels and in underground sumps and dams. The loss of revenue due to decreased metal recoveries considerably offset the gains from increased stoping efficiencies and the use of cement was substantially reduced while, (a) the Metallurgical. Department attempted to identify the chemical nature of the problem and overcome it, and (b) the Mining Department investigated methods of reducing cement contamination of the ore stream. As a part of this investigation the Mining Department added polymeric flocculants to the cemented fill pulp. Testwork was carried out in the following steps 1. The available Alfloc polymers were screened to determine which was the most effective and what was its optimum dosage rate. 2. This polymer was used in the laboratory to determine the reduction of surface slime, clarity of water, and effects on strength and percolation of fill. 3. Fills were placed underground to substan- tiate the laboratory work. /+. The polymer was then added to all cemented fills going underground to study its effect over a long term. The use of flocculants not only improved the distribution of cement in the body of the fill, but also the distribution of the fines fraction of the filling material, practically eliminated slippery surfaces and improved the clarity of the drainage water. Flocculant is now added to all cemented fills and restrictions on the use of cement are gradually being lifted.

QEMSCAN« technology is a widely accepted automated e-beam technique providing quantitative and statistically robust mineralogical data to the mining industry. It uses X-ray mapping combined with backscattered electron (BSE) brightness to identify minerals in almost any type of geological material (Gottlieb et al, 2000). Besides the modal mineralogy also the liberation, associations, average grain size and other textural information can be obtained. The aim of this study is to test reproducibility of this technique by setting up and running standard tests on different QEMSCAN« systems. Multiple sample blocks were prepared by our standard operating procedure as epoxy-mounted, carbon-coated, polished blocks. The replicates were measured under the same conditions and measurement parameter settings on different QEMSCAN« instruments. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for the set of measurements was calculated. Generally the reproducibility of the systems themselves was found to be excellent, ranging between 0.4 and 1.5 per cent RSD. The more significant change in the reproducibility was found to be caused potentially by the sample preparation and variation in the mineralogy of the replicates. The measurement parameter settings together with these variations can account for almost 15 per cent RSD for minerals of low abundance. For analysed samples good results for the main phases present in quantities higher than 2 - 5 wt per cent of the total mass of the sample were confirmed with RSD generally below six per cent. Following the experiments, the parameters having the biggest influence on the performance of the QEMSCAN« and its precision are discussed in detail. The importance of sample preparation procedures and measurement parameter settings is emphasised. It is shown that experience and excellence is necessary for getting the most from the automatic mineralogical methods like QEMSCAN«.

Melbourne Water (MW) is responsible for a section of existing gravity trunk sewer servicing the Melbourne central business district, Docklands, Port Melbourne and other adjacent areas, known as the Melbourne Main Sewer (MMS). MW has determined that the 2.2 km long 110 year old sewer will not adequately service these areas into the future or provide the level of reliability needed. The Melbourne Main Sewer Replacement project (MMSR) involves the replacement of the MMS with a new gravity sewer main and six key manhole shafts, known as the Melbourne Main Reliever (MMR).The majority of the MMR sewer tunnel is situated south of the Yarra River and will be constructed using an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) and will be lined with precast concrete segments. The tunnel will be 2.4 m internal diameter and will have a 1.8 m diameter glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) sewer pipe positioned within it. This project represents the first large-scale, modern, mechanised tunnel project in MelbourneÆs Yarra Delta Quaternary sediments. There is little precedence known to the authors of similar scale tunnelling projects in these particular geological units. During the recent detailed investigation and design stages of the project, significant effort has been spent on characterising the geotechnical conditions along the alignment and predicting the effects of the new tunnel on the existing environment. Some of the key design issues that have been identified and managed through the design process include short-term surface settlement due to tunnel excavation and the predicted effects on surface infrastructure, potential spalling of the steel fibre reinforced concrete segments under full TBM ram loads and tunnel lining design in geological units with highly variable stiffness.Construction of the new MMR sewer tunnel is expected to commence in mid-2008 with a capital cost of approximately $160 million. Sewer system commissioning is scheduled for completion by early 2012.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Townsville prospect is situated approximately 4 km north of the Ok Tedi copper-gold mine in Western Province, Papua New Guinea. Drilling in the 1990s delineated a resource of >1 Moz of gold within shallow, skarn breccia-hosted mineralisation associated with quartz-carbonate infill, together with pyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, galena, tennantite-tetrahedrite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, and a variety of Au-, Ag- and Bi-telluride minerals. The deepest of these historical holes (TVL034) also intersected copper-gold-silver mineralisation more than 100 m below the gold-rich zone that is associated with calc-silicate skarn breccia. Although copper-gold-silver mineralisation in DDHTVL034 is associated with clinopyroxene-rich skarn, it was also noted that garnet in the skarn breccia became progressively darker in colour with depth, ranging from green at shallow levels to dark red-brown at depth. This indicated that the skarn breccia is zoned, with more proximal garnet skarn at depth possibly indicating an association with porphyry-style copper-gold mineralisation.Based on this skarn zonation model, recent drilling at the Titan prospect, located approximately 500 m south of TVL034, was targeted at potential copper-gold silver mineralisation beneath shallow skarn breccia-hosted gold mineralisation. DDHTVL 081 intersected 46 m at 6.36 g/t Au from 68 m and 80.7 m and 1.67 per cent Cu, 1.27 g/t Au and 20.32 g/t Ag from 184 m. Drill monitors for rotary blasthole drills have been available to the mining industry since the 1970s. The early monitors were pen strip chart recorders that were developed for the oil drilling industry and adapted to mining. They recorded drilling parameters such as depth, pull-down pressure, torque, RPM, and hailing air pressure. While these recorders could generate a large volume of paper, the amount of useful data was minimal. The data was not summarised and required an engineer to interpret the chart traces. Being a mechanical recorder, the devices were also susceptible to frequent failures. Modem electronics, and the development of the personal computer and its associated software have radically changed the type of instrumentation that is now available for blasthole drills. Perhaps more important is what can be done with the data. The PC allows the logged data to be analysed, summarised, and a variety of reports to be generated. The reports can be customised to meet the specific requirements of the mine and reduce the amount of time that is required to interpret the data. There is also an increased awareness in the mining industry of the importance of production drills. Blasthole drills have typically been the piece of production equipment that received the least amount of attention in a surface mine. Management focussed on the trucks and shovels or draglines. This situation is changing, and therefore the benefits that can be derived from monitoring drill performance are being recognised. Potential economic benefits of installing drill monitors have been documented in previous papers (Peck and Vynne, 1992). Mines are finding that pay-back periods of less than twelve months and rates of return in excess of 30 per cent are not uncommon. These benefits include the following: 1. Reduced overdrilling; 2. Increased rate of penetration; 3. Helping to locate coal seams; 4. Identification of weak and strong zones; 5. Reduce geophysical logging; 6. Optimising blasts; 7. Improved fragmentation and diggability; 8. Decreased coal dilution; 9. Increased bit life; 10. Reduced maintenance costs; 1 I . Improved accuracy of data and reports.

The Hemersley Ranges are located in the North West Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21¦ 30! to 23¦S and longitudes 117¦ to 120¦E. Their mean height above sea level is'. 2,000 feet, and they rise from 600 to 800 feet. above the gen- eral level of the tableland which extends south-east from the coastal town of Roebourne.. Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 feet above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, dry during the greater part of the year, which have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of orocidolite outcrop. The presence -of the mineral was first recorded in 1917., but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when reports of a strong market demand for-croeido lice resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Daleis Gorges. . It was established also that the blue asbestos belt extended from Willi- Wolli Springs north-west to Millstream Station, i.e.,-over a.:length of 180 miles and a width of 20 to 30 miles. A number of attempts were made to develop aid treat the Yampire and Wittenoom'Gorge deposits from 1938 onwards, but, for a ,variety of reasons, none of these-proved successful. Current production,. is wholly by Australian Blue Asbestos Pty. Limited at Wittenoom Gorge. This company commenced operations at the Wittenoom Mine in 1946, with an output of 601.8 long tons of- fibre,. and later transferred tb the Colonial Mine about one mile to the north-west. Output has been increased steadily to an' average of 12,000 to 14.,000.. long tons; per annum over the past six years. The total Western Australian output to the end of 1962 is reported by the Mines Department as 110,013 long tons valued at úAl2,403,728..

The carbonatite-hosted apatite deposit at the Cajati open pit mine in the Jacupiranga igneous-carbonatite complex is located in south-eastern Brazil. The major styles of apatite mineralisation include veins or veinlets, small pods or patches, disseminated apatite and locally massive aggregates. The metallurgical concentration of the apatite is accomplished by grinding the carbonatite, removal of magnetite with a magnetic drum, size classification with cyclones and flotation to suppress carbonates and collect apatite. To examine the character of the apatite grains and to apply those observations to apatite beneficiation, specimens of carbonatite were collected from recent exposures in the mine and from selected drill holes. This study utilised a variety of microscopy methods, including transmitted and reflected light, cathodoluminescence (CL) and scanning electron microscopy with wavelength-dispersive spectrometers for mineral compositions. It was found that LREE, Na and Sr are the main elements replacing Ca in the apatite, with relatively low oxide contents (<0.5 per cent, but up to about one per cent for Sr). LREE and Sr contents consistently increase in the latest intrusions (C4, C5 and SP24). Chemical and morphological modifications of apatite were recognised to be related to detrimental effects on flotation recovery. Three examples illustrate this relationship: 1.  Apatite with reddish CL is fractured. Locally that apatite exhibits no CL due to CL quenching caused by iron entering the apatite structure.2.  Apatite from the xenolith-rich area exhibits abundant fine, platy silicates that appear to interfere with flotation and lower apatite recovery.3.  So called æhardÆ apatite, which is more difficult to grind, occurs in an area in the mine that was affected by hydrothermal activity. That activity is evidenced by the development of a bright, white CL rim in the apatite, and by the presence of late veins of carbonates and sulfides that fill fractures and appear to contribute to higher cohesiveness of those apatite grains.

Currently, social impact assessment (SIA) is used to determine social impacts across the life-of-mine (LOM) to closure. This paper draws on recently completed SIA reports from the Martha gold mine in Waihi and qualitative interviews in the community that explored post-closure options, to review the challenges mining companies face when engaging with iwi4 through the SIA process and what that may mean for closure planning. The Maori of New Zealand consistently lobby to have a distinct voice in resource management issues. This is in line with the evolution of indigenous participation in SIA globally and with New Zealand policies, not least of which, the Treaty of Waitangi (the founding document of New Zealand) makes provision for Maori self-determination with regard to natural resources. Land use for mining has been a source of conflict for Maori and mining can have profound cultural and social impacts on the Maori community, yet despite Treaty intentions their representation in SIA has been comparatively limited. With this in mind, the Waitangi Tribunal has released the Ko Aotearoa Tenei (Wai 262) report, which recommends far reaching reforms to laws and policies affecting Maori culture and identity including natural resource management. This landmark report seeks to move the Maori-Government relationship beyond grievance to partnership. Given suggested policy changes in Wai 262 and the risks of poorly conceived closure planning, it is timely to review where Maori currently fit into the SIA process. The findings of this research suggest that improvements to the outcomes of this process will require companies to act beyond compliance. Late-Archean banded iron formation (BIF)-hosted deposits in the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia are less well understood compared to the larger Paleoproterozoic, Superior-type BIFhosted deposits of the Hamersley Province. The Weld Range greenstone belt, in the Murchison Domain of the Yilgarn Craton, hosts two Archean, high-grade deposits, Madoonga (68 Mt resource at 57.7 wt per cent Fe) and Beebyn (62 Mt resource at 59.6 wt per cent Fe, ASX announcement 2008). Five main types of high-grade (>55 wt per cent Fe) iron mineralisation at Weld Range each display characteristic grades, tonnage, and contaminant levels, which affect exploration strategies and beneficiation methods:1. ‘Residual’ ore formed as a result of two generations of hypogene alteration of BIF. The first alteration phase replaced silica-rich bands with siderite and/or Fe-rich dolomite; the second phase involved the removal of carbonate gangue minerals and the concentration of residual Fe oxide-rich bands in the BIF via volume reduction. The product is a high-grade, high-tonnage Fe orebody, with minor contaminants.2. Magnetite-bearing shear and fault zones cut BIF along lithological contacts. These zones of secondary magnetite formed as a result of the addition of hypogene magnetite via the circulation of Fe-rich, hypogene hydrothermal fluids through BIF. This type of mineralisation produces narrow (low-tonnage), high-grade magnetite-rich ore zones with high levels of contaminants (eg SiO2, Al2O3) due to the difficulty in mining these zones.3. Specular haematite ± quartz-bearing shear and fault zones cut residual orebodies and magnetite bearing structures. They share similar characteristics to magnetite-bearing structures.4. Goethite-haematite supergene ore zones are controlled by brittle faults that cut BIF. These faults promoted the flow of supergene fluids through BIF and resulted in large ore zones with variable Fe grades and contaminants.5. Detrital deposits comprise transported BIF fragments and are intensely goethite-haematite supergene-altered. These orebodies are locally extensive, with moderate Fe grades.

JUST prior to the war the Broken Hill South Ltd: raised, on the average, 6628 tons of ore per week, all of which was crushed and treated in the 4-section gravity mill and the slime flotation plant, for the recovery of lead concentrate carrying silver. The sandy residues from that treatment were railed to the treatment plant of the Amalgamated Zinc (De Bavay's) Ltd. for the recovery of zinc concentrate by flotation, on the joint account of both companies. Subsequent to that-since 1916-approximately 1000 tons of old dump slime were also treated weekly for the recovery of lead and silver as slime-lead concentrate.PLANT CAPACITYUnder this programme the Babcock and Wilcox boiler plant of 8 boilers was taxed to such an extent as to call for the installation of two additional boilers, each of 2690 sq. ft. of heating surface and 55 sq. ft. chain-grade area.The electric generators and the air compressors of the old powerplant were also loaded to their maximum capacity. In view of the fact that the old power-plant had been added to from time to time since 1901, and that further extension was notpossible, and as it was not, moreover, an economical arrangement, the whole question of power generation was reconsidered. The investigations of the Leningrad ruining lilstitute on this problem are carrying out in the following main directions: 1) The analysis and study of contaminants migration at particular sites of mining development; 2) The working out of theoretical and me- thodical basic principles of aquifers migration tests; 3) The work- ing out of methods of the forcasting of groundwater pollution pro- cesses; 4) The theoretical and uethodical substantiation of hydro- geological observations of groundwater pollution processes; 5) The wort ing out of the measures at the groundwater control and their rational use at the particular sites of mining development. The research that have been carried out by the present moment have covered the wide range of wining and geological conditions -- as from the point of view of specific genetic types of water-be- aring rocks (porous, fissured and fissured-porous), as well as from the point of view of pollution sources (surface waste water basins and underground basins of non-standard water) and the cha- racter of the latter's migration (tracers, physically neutral ef- fluents, heavy or light ones). The combination of specialized mi- gration tests and observations carryed out at uoayi, sites, as well as the following ar~,alysis o:i the data of field study allowed to get useful theoretical, methodical and practical results on the all directions above mentioned, ns the summing up of these results the author proposed the concept of controlled ground :ester polluti on. Computer controlled truck dispatching systems is a newly-developed technical system in surface mines with shovel-truck technology. The real time dispatching criteria, as the core of optimal truck dispatching software, are analysed and a new criterion, complex dispatching criterion, is put forward. Dispatching criteria previously proposed include: 1. `Earliest Loading' (EL) - to assign a truck to the shovel at which the truck can be loaded earliest. 2. `Max Truck' (MT) - to assign a truck to the shovel at which the truck will have the shortest waiting time. 3. `Max Shovel' (MS) - to assign a truck to the shovel which has been waiting for the longest time. 4. `Minimum Saturation Degree' (MSD) - to assign a truck to the shovel at the branch where the truck flow saturation degree is minimum. 5. `Minimum Saturation Degree with Truck Cycle time consideration' (MSDTC) - as the MSD principle, with the truck travel cycle also considered. 6. `Fixed Dispatching' (FIX) - to assign trucks to fixed shovels. A system simulation model has been set up for truck dispatching system analysis. A few surface coal mines have been selected for case studies. Equipment waiting times and shift production of the system are obtained as the main outputs of the model. Simulation results show that each dispatching criterion has its own applicable range, no one can absolutely dominate the others. For example, when under-trucked, EL and MT criterion can obtain higher production than the MS criterion; when over-trucked, it is vice versa; while for MSD criteria, better results can be obtained no matter how the truck numbers fluctuate. From the view point of shovel output balance, large fluctuations occur for EL and MT criteria, while a good balance can be obtained for other criteria. In the light of dynamic change of mining system conditions, a single dispatching criterion is not necessarily reasonable. A complex dispatching criterion has been put forward to seek the complex optimum effect. Taking the advantage of each dispatching criteria, the dispatching result of a complex dispatching criterion dominates over individual dispatching criterion and a comprehensive optimum effect can be reached.

In recent years, the. art of electric steelmaking has received a great deal of attention, and naturally, much controversy has existed from time to time regarding the relative merits of different practices and tywes of furnaces. Nevertheless, at the present time, the basic principles of the process are reasonably well established, and by far the greatest percentage of electric steel is a product of the basic lined, direct arc type furnace. Ferro alloy manufacture has demanded the development of furnaces having very different characteristics to those used for steel. Some special alloys, however, require conditions of manufacture which are more closely approached in the steel type furnace, and thus the latter has been adapted where necessary for the production of these alloys.One such alloy, low carbon ferro-manganese, is manufactured at Whyalla, South Australia, in a basic-lined, direct arc furnace, which is used alternatively for the production of alloy steels.BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ELECTRIC FURNACEThe principle of melting by electricity was first applied to the melting of iron in 1879 by William von Siemens, whose equipment consisted of a small crucible into which were introduced two carbon electrodes.
