The Pebble deposit, located in south-west Alaska, is one of the largest Copper- Gold-Molybdenum (Cu-Au-Mo) porphyry systems in the world, with a current resource of >8 billion tonnes which contain 73.7 billion pounds of copper, 87.1 million ounces of gold and 4.16 billion pounds of molybdenum. The Pebble deposit formed at ~90 Ma, during emplacement of subduction-related hornblende granodiorite porphyry intrusions emplaced into Jurassic-Cretaceous sedimentary, volcanic and subvolcanic intrusive rocks of the Kahiltna Terrane. The Pebble West and Pebble East Zones represent two thermal and fluid centres in a single large magmatic-hydrothermal system. The West Zone extends from surface to about 500 m depth, has thin zones of oxide and supergene mineralisation overlying hypogene chalcopyrite mineralisation, and is amenable to open pit extraction. The East Zone extends to at least 1700 m depth, is higher grade, occurs beneath an eastward-thickening cover of younger sedimentary and volcanic rocks, lacks oxide and supergene mineralisation, and is being evaluated for underground block-cave mining. Most Cu-Au-Mo was introduced with early K-silicate alteration and related quartz-sulfide veins. In the East Zone, a structurally-controlled overprint by advanced argillic alteration significantly increased Au and, to a lesser extent, Cu grades. Exploration potential at Pebble and its surrounding district remains high. Several other porphyry, skarn and epithermal deposits have been discovered in the district, but only limited exploration has been conducted. The eastern, higher grade part of the Pebble deposit remains open in several directions, with significant potential for resource expansion by ongoing, aggressive drill exploration. The Bastnäs-type magnetite-skarn-hosted rare earth element (REE) mineralisations are located in the Palaeoproterozoic Bergslagen ore province, central Sweden, and occur along a ca 100 km long belt of 1.90–1.87 Ga metavolcanosedimentary rocks. Ten different Bastnäs-type deposits have been sampled in order to assess the origin of ore-forming fluids in these systems. Magnetite and quartz have d18O values ranging from -2.3 to +1.1‰ and +7.2 to +8.3‰ respectively. Mineralised carbonates have d18O values between +5.8 and +7.2‰ and d13C values between -5.4 and -3.3‰. Temperature calculations based on the O-isotope composition of mineral pairs, combined with available fluid inclusion data, suggest primary mineralisation at ca 650–400°C. For these temperatures, calculated equilibrium fluids have d18O values that range from those typical of magmatic fluids (+6 to +8‰) to lower values (down to +3‰). Variation in carbonate O and C isotope data are consistent with interaction between local Palaeoproterozoic carbonate rocks (d18O = +12.5 to +19.6‰ and d13C = -1.8 to +1.7‰) and fluids of a magmatic origin. This paper discusses the computerisation of the drill hole database, some historical records and the creation of a three-dimensional model of the gold bearing structures for resource estimation and mine design at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in northern Tasmania. The phase of the work reported here commenced in November 1997 and was completed in March 1998. The historical mining on the Tasmania Reef had reached a depth of 450 m below surface when work ceased in 1914. Production up to this time was 854 000 ounces gold. Recent activity has concentrated on testing depth extensions of the previously mined ore structure, to a depth of 1000 m below surface, and the establishment of an underground mining operation to exploit this resource. The lode structure at Beaconsfield is a typical mesothermal vein style deposit. Gold is contained within narrow quartz, carbonate and minor sulphide reefs or veins. Reef width is variable from a few centimetres to several metres with æsplitsÆ or bifurcations being common. The reef averages 2.7 m true width in the economic zones. The key feature of this style of mineralisation is that reef continuity can be confirmed by drilling to a high level of confidence, but the gold grades are somewhat more erratic in nature. The resource estimates were based entirely on drill data. The drill intercepts on the reef were coded for each split directly into a database and these allocations validated graphically. The distribution of grades and widths show an increasing gold grade with reef width for both the drill hole and historical data. The same histogram patterns, mixed populations and overall arithmetic average grade for the historical mine (at 21.52 g/t > 3 g/t Au) and new drill data (at 21.55 g/t > 3 g/t Au) would indicate that there has been no major change in the overall style or grade of the ore from the historically mined areas to the new resource. The reef, host geology, area of historical workings and resource zones at the Beaconsfield Mine were defined as a series of closed wireframes. The Tasmania Reef was modelled as five mutually exclusive wireframes, one each for the Main Reef, Footwall split, Second footwall split, Third footwall split and Hangingwall split. The data for this exercise was extracted directly from the drill hole database, stored in Microsoft Access format. The formation of the solids was largely automated with manual validation and refinements allowing for multiple runs using different interpolation methods and combinations of drill holes. A rotated 3D-block model in the plane of the Tasmania Reef was created to contain the grade model and allow for tonnage, grade and reef width estimates. An inverse distance squared (ID2) interpolation method was used with ranges of 25 m along strike and 125 m down plunge with blank areas infilled with 50 m by 250 m. Each reef split was filled separately using only drill intercepts from that split. The method was independently validated used MIK methods. Longitudinal sections have been prepared showing gold grade, reef width and width +grade. Estimates were also made for arsenic, sulphur and other minor elements. The long sections show three distinct mining zones. A method is presented for the conversion of the resources to reserves by the addition of mining parameters for minimum mining width, minimum pillar, cut-off grade and internal and external dilution. The selection is done on columns within the block model, and allows for all splits to be considered at once. Multiple runs can be made for varying combinations of parameters to test different mining methods and their impact on reserves, mine life and NPV.

The Tom, East and West zone, stratiform Zn-Pb-Ag deposits at Macmillan Pass, Yukon, Canada were discovered by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co Ltd prospectors in 1951. Further exploration, including two phases of underground exploration produced an HBM&S calculated reserve of 9.28 Mt of 7.5 per cent Pb, 6.2 per cent Zn and 69.4 g/T Ag for these zones. Cominco Ltd optioned the property in 1988. Deep, surface drilling extended the West and Southeast zones downward 200 - 300 m, indicating an additional potential resource of several million tonnes of good grade. The magnitude of the controlling syndepositional setting suggests that mineralisation continues to greater depth but with increased drilling and possibly mining costs. The 30 x 60 km Macmillan Fold belt trends WNW across the NW Selwyn Basin and Cordilleran trend. Within the fold belt, the Central Block - a complex, rift controlled basin of Devonian siliciclastics, hosts seven zones of Pb-Zn-Ag mineralisation clustered about four hydrothermal centres. The centres, distributed over 24 km, are coincident with small syndepositionally active structural sub-basins. The Tom deposits, in one such sub-basin, are localised by a third order structure consisting of two palaeobathymetric troughs flanking a syndepositional horst. This structure caused drastic facies and thickness changes over 600 metres of strata and focussed the venting of hydrothermal fluids through permeable conglomerates in the horst and its flanking growth faults. Mineral facies are zoned, with Pb-Ag contents rapidly diminishing outward from the vent resulting in restricted areas of high grade Pb-Zn-Ag-Ba ore within more extensive, sub-economic, Ba-Zn mineralisation. Widespread iron carbonate alteration of the footwall and high Si, B and Zn values in the hangingwall 'fingerprint' the deposit and along with the distinct facies variations provide aids to exploring the Tom and like deposits.

The problems associated with equating calculated and measured properties of explosives with blast results are examined. The results from six full-scale test blasts in a limestone quarry are described. The purpose of the full-scale trial was two-fold, i) assess the role of varying aluminum levels (10% maximum) in a given explosive in terms of blasting performance, and, ii) find correlation between calculated, as well as measured properties of explosives and the resulting blasting performance. Each blast consisted of 36 holes, initiated with short period detonators in a staggered 3-row 2.4 m x 2.7 m (burden x spacing) pattern. Each 75 mm diameter borehole with no subgrade contained on the average 22 kg of 65 mm diameter cartridged explosive. The bench height was 6.3 m, with an average collpr of 1.2 m. The calculated and mgasured properties of explosive included, strength, detonation and explosion pressure, VOD, plate-dent depth, underwater bubble and shock energy, and the total energy efficiency. Each blast was instrumented to measure detonation velocity, initiation sequence, muck pile motion by means of high-speed photography and blasting vibrations. The post-blast measurements included photogrammetric survey of muck pile for size distribution on surface, muck pile profile, as well as the extent of backbreak. The results showed that the overall blasting performance of the explosive in question was nearly commensurate with the level of aluminum in the explosive, and there was excellent correlation between the underwater test properties and the blast results. The study also exemplified the need for more extensive post-blast analysis than is usual practice, for quantitative assessment of blasting performance of explosives and providing the necessary data-base for calibration of blasting models.

In sizing of wet coal by the horizontal vibrating screen, screen openings to be used is much restricted, because coal is sticky and its bulk density is little. The electrically heated screen and other various types of screen had been tried to screen raw coal and coal as raw materials at a few mm. However, they failed to realize satisfactory results. On the other hand, fine sizing of coal is requested by many fields. For example, raw coal is desired to be screened at the fine rate, before being fed to the coal preparation control system in order to transport undersizes as unprepared coal particles and to reduce load in coal preparation waste water treatment system.1) Coals fed to the fluidized bed boiler also should be sized at a few mm. Regardless of many requests on fine sizing of coal, it seems that there are many cases to omit the basic screening process, because the screening is very difficult on a industrial scale. Size control as pretreatment of coal as raw materials is presented as one of the basic screening processes. In 1979, Kinki Industrial Co., Ltd. and Nippon Steel Corporation jointly succeeded in developing the vertical centrifugal screen. Closed -circuit crushing system by the use of this screen has operated actually at N.S.C, Hirbhata .Works, and realized the anticipated result. Consequently, this system has established the position as the most basic technology in the coal preparation. 2), 3), 4) This system has been also introduced to Nakayama Steel Works, Ltd. in 1982. This system termed the CPC (Coal Preparation Control) Process has been operated smoothly in both N.S.C. and Nakayama. Reported herein is the practical application of the vertical centrifugal screen termed V3-Separator. (V3 means vertical, versatile and vibration.)

Given that the mining industry is committed to sustainable development principles and that Australia is experiencing changes to the regulatory environment that aim to modernise the water sector and encourage adoption of consistent approaches, there is a well defined need for the Australian minerals industry to develop a water accounting framework. This requires: key terms and definitions for water metrics for use in the Australian minerals industry that is consistent with the wider water sector, a suite of metrics representing key components of an operationÆs water balance, a calculation method for some of the metrics, and a reporting protocol. This paper presents the methodology that was used to derive these four components. Existing accounting frameworks were reviewed and key terms and definitions that were consistent with current requirements were proposed. A calculation methodology was developed to obtain some of the key indicators and variables that cannot be easily measured directly (water loss through evaporation is an example). The adopted terms and definitions dictated model development, with the conclusion that a systems approach was the most effective calculation process. To test the proposed definitions and calculation methodology, values for water metrics were derived for eight sites. The proposed framework and definitions could deal with the specific situations selected as case studies. The associated calculation methodology produced complete accounts at various levels. Some elements of the accounts could be directly checked against available data and simulations. The framework captured well variations in the reuse efficiencies; reuse efficiency could even vary for similar processes. It is concluded that this preliminary accounting framework provides a consistent language and metrics for quantifying and communicating water management, both at the intersection of the site with the surrounding landscape (through detailed reporting of site inputs and outputs) and within operational activities. Using this consistent framework for quantifying and documenting water use within an operation will provide a platform for compiling and comparing minerals industry water use with other sectors. This may support benchmarking activities within regions or companies and help demonstrate leadership amongst water users in water resource stewardship. The approach presented here is applicable to a wide variety of mining and processing activities, and biophysical environments, and can be adopted as the first step towards developing national water accounts for the Australian Minerals Industry.

Naturally occurring rutile contains approximately 96 per cent titanium dioxide (Ti02), whereas the product from the ilmenite reduction - aeration upgrading process, "sub- rutile", contains only about 92 per cent Ti02. Therefore, there is an-incentive to lift the quality of sub-rutile by removing transition metal impurities, in order to supply a more valuable and marketable product, particularly for the chloride-route pigment producers. Previous studies have shown that the sub- rutile residual iron content (of approximately 4 per cent) and residual manganese content (of approximately 1.5 per cent) are chemically bound within the titanium-oxygen mineral lattice, and are most difficult to remove by simple leaching methods. In attempts to improve their eventual removal, a simple process modification has been successfully investigated in laboratory scale trials. Transition metal sulphides have been formed in the reduced ilmenite by using a "sulphur-doping" technique during reduction (metallization) conducted at controlled temperatures. These compounds give rise to greatly enhanced dissolution of the unwanted transition metal constituents during the sub- sequent aeration and acid washing steps. Thus, the manganese content of the final sulphur- doped, reduced-aerated, acid washed product can be reduced by about 90 per cent to 0.2 per cent, and the iron content by about 70 per cent to less than 1.5 per cent, in comparison with those levels remaining after unmodified pro- cessing. Additions of sulphur as low as 2 per cent of the weight of the ilmenite have proven satisfactory. Preliminary studies reveal that the modified process is economically feasible. These results suggest that the sulphur content of the Collie coal char used in an unmodified reduction step must exert some influence on the eventual removal of iron and manganese during aeration and acid washing.

This paper examines the fire life systems implemented in two existing tunnels and discusses whether the standards used were appropriate. It focuses on the Terrace Tunnel as this upgrade and refurbishment is complete.The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) manages six tunnels on the State Highway network with two of these built in the last seven years. The Terrace Tunnel, opened in 1978, was refurbished with modern fire life safety systems in 2010–2012. An interim upgrade of the Mt Victoria Tunnel, opened in 1931, was also carried out at this time.In present times, few existing tunnels have undergone significant upgrades and refurbishments. The Terrace Tunnel required: new power supplies, control buildings, lighting, wall panels and jet fans, a deluge system, emergency exit lights and way-finding lights, a public address (PA) system, a radio rebroadcast system, lane control sign (LCS) and variable message sign (VMS), an over-height detection system (OHD) and a new tunnel management system.In the absence of suitable guidelines, various standards were used to carry out the refurbishment. The Austroad Guide to Road Tunnels and AS4825 Tunnel Fire Safety, although designed for new tunnels and not specifically intended for existing tunnels, provided a framework. A multi-criteria assessment of risk (MCAT) was carried out to determine the systems to be provided.The Terrace Tunnel has perhaps set a benchmark for refurbishing existing tunnels as few projects of this type have been completed recently. Reflected light optical microscopy, or epimicroscopy, is one of the oldest techniques of modern mineralogy. At a relatively low capital cost, it is also very resourceful, and the analytical choice for the identification of most ore minerals. In ore mineralogy, reflected light optical images have the potential to overcome the main limitation of backscattered electron images from scanning electron microscopes, namely contrast of mean atomic number  below the spectral resolution of the backscattered electrons detector. This is the case for relevant ores, like iron (haematite-magnetite) and copper-zinc ores (sphalerite-bornite), but for both cases the pairs of minerals are easily discriminated in reflected light. The improvements in optics and electronics also made microscopy a powerful source of digital images, suitable for automated analysis for minerals processing, as the determination of liberation spectra. The drawback, however, has always been the impossibility to recognise the transparent minerals, which account for most of the gangue phases in ores, from the embedding resin, usually epoxy. In order to determine if there was any possibility to separate quartz from epoxy resins, reflectance spectra have been acquired for quartz and some commercial epoxy resins (Araldite, BuehlerÆs Epothin and Epocolor, Araldite spiked with fluorochrome from Struers), from 380 to 720 nm in 5 nm intervals. Reflectance of quartz and epoxy is very similar over the whole visible light range, and varies from 4.5 to five per cent. Epocolor, a red-dyed epoxy, reflects slightly more above 560 nm, as does Araldite spiked with the fluorochrome from 460 to 570, but for both the reflectance is still very close to that of quartz, under 5.1 per cent. This data set is final, and precludes the application of reflectance in light optical image analysis for assessment of liberation, phase quantification, or any other signal that requires separation of resin from transparent minerals.

Human habitation of the Pacific Rim began when mankind began migrations out of its place of origin in the Rift Valley of Central Africa c. 4million years ago. This migration was erratic and largely controlled by advances and retreat of the various Ice Ages which, while limiting advances in areas of intense cold, at the same time aided migration thro-ugh the creation of land bridges as ocean levels declined during periods of glacial advance (Fig.l).Mankind began its trek to the Pacific from Africa across India then north into southern China and south into Indonesia (Fig.2). In part, these migrations stimulated early technological develop-ments to fulfill needs and adapt to environmental conditions; thus, these nomads developed stone and bone tools, animal skin clothing and the use of caves and other simple shelters. The earliest evid-ence of mankind's use of fire can be found at Zhou-koudaian near Beijing, c.400,000 BP.From China, the completion of the Pacific Rim's population can be attributed to the last Ice Age that dropped the ocean level by more than 300 feet and created land bridges about 40,000 BP allowing migration across the Bering Strait into Alaska and to Australia from Indonesia. The American migration reached Mexico about 30,000 BP, and by 6000 BP the occupancy of the Pacific Rim was complete when the first human settlers reached the southern tip of Chile.

This paper describes the possibility of the application of flotation to the separation of monazite from xenotime and of columbite from ferberite, which have been said to be difficult with generally used physical beneficiation methods. For Malaysian monazite and xenotime samples, a great difference is observed between the flotation recoveries at pH 7.5 using 1.0 x 10-4mol/1 dodecylammonium chloride (DAC). The grade and recovery of columbite in the binary flotation with both minerals result in 85 per cent and 67 per cent in the cleaning froth and 91 per cent and 51 per cent in the re-cleaning froth, without adding any scavenging stages. For monazite samples from various localities, the flotability is dominated by the electrostatic interaction between mineral surface and collector ion using DAC as collector, but the singular decrease of flotation is observed in the sample of which the crystallinity is low and the surface structure is rugged and complex. Otherwise, ferric ion in the flotation system probably dissolved from mineral is found to activate the flotation using sodium dodecylsulfate as collector. For columbite and ferberite, the separation is judged possible at pH 3.0 using 1.0 x 10'3mo1/l sodium oleate (NaOl) from the single flotation results of each mineral. In the binary flotation, however, columbite recovery in the froth is greatly diminished below that expected. This would be because NaOl is prevented from adsorbing on the columbite surface of which the charge is transformed more negative side by the specific adsorption of the tungstate ion dissolved from ferberite.

Gunnedah, in north-western New South Wales (NSW), including the town, the surrounding Liverpool Plains and the Pilliga forests to the west, are currently the subject of intense mining interest for coal and coal seam gas. Achieving positive outcomes for koala conservation on mined landscapes will require a sound grasp of koala ecology; and local knowledge of koala movements, tree choice and associated threats to the continued survival of koalas, particularly roadkill from increased mining infrastructure. This requires a research-oriented approach to testing ideas applicable to the long-term survival of koala populations. Our recent koala research in NSW has shown that, in 2006, Gunnedah had the largest koala population west of the Great Dividing Range, and the only population in NSW that was expanding. That prompted us to instigate a detailed study in 2008 - 2011 to determine, inter alia, whether the koalas were using trees that were planted in the 1990s to cope with rising soil salinity. Our GPS-tracking has shown that regrowth trees as young as ten years old can attract koalas. In 2009, the demise of about a quarter of the local koala population from an intense heatwave gave us a foretaste of how habitat and climate change interrelate at the landscape scale. We are now examining the optimal combinations of tree choice, and patch size and shape, for habitat restoration. This will be relevant to local coal seam gas and coal mine proposals, and ongoing mitigation actions. The Senate enquiry of September 2011 on the koala and demonstrated the intense public interest in the survival of this iconic species. Its subsequent listing for Queensland and NSW under the Commonwealth Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 further raises its profile and obligations for management of koalas and their habitat. It will take considerable effort to manage the Liverpool Plains koala population for the next 50 years in the face of extensive land-use changes from mining, and the attendant threats from road kill, compounded by the new threat of climate change manifesting itself as an increased frequency of heatwaves and more severe droughts. This paper describes the research that underpins these conclusions, identifies some of the research approaches needed, argues for working strategically now, rather than try to patch up matters after the event, and presents a set of guides for environmental plantings. The Coeur d'Alene mining district in northern Idaho, USA is the second largest producer of silver in the world. Mesothermal silver-lead-zinc veins occur in the metasedimentary rocks of the Belt Supergroup with five main types of associated hydrothermal alteration: 1) feldspar destruction, 2) hydrothermal bleaching, 3) carbonatisation, 4) sulfidation, and 5) silicification. Hydrothermal bleaching is characterised by hematite destruction with associated siderite and quartz veins and veinlets, coarse euhedral pyrite and magnetite. Bleached zones envelop both mineralised and barren veins and extend for metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Carbonatisation consists of addition of siderite, which occurs as veins, veinlets, stockwork, irregular blebs or spots, and coarsely disseminated grains, depending on the relative distance from the main vein structure. Siderite envelops nearly all mineralised veins, relates to all other alteration types and extends from several metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Pyrite and galena alteration dominate sulfidation and are associated with some mineralised veins. Pyrite alteration strongly correlates with siderite alteration and exists in three main forms: a) very fine-grained pyrite flooding, which can extend for metres to tens of metres into wall rocks; b) coarse-grained, euhedral pyrite, which is sporadic and associated with the redox boundary in hydrothermally bleached zones; and c) small isolated zones (6 - 15 cm) of medium-grained, subhedral to euhedral pyrite associated with pervasive siderite alteration. Where present, disseminated galena extends for metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Silicification is characterised by veins, veinlets, stringers, irregular patches and variable hardness in siltites and commonly appears in association with hydrothermal bleaching and siderite alteration. Although related to mineralisation, silicification is sporadic and in most places a clear envelope around mineralised veins cannot be identified.

The placement of sulfidic waste below the groundwater table ensures limited interaction with the hydrosphere and suppression of sulfide oxidation. However, if sulfidic waste is placed above the groundwater table and remains uncovered, the backfill becomes part of the unsaturated zone and is exposed to atmospheric oxygen and leaching. This study aims to establish the leaching behaviour of sulfidic waste placed above the groundwater table and the impact of such leachate on the local aquifer at the Thalanga base metal mine. Mining of the Thalanga copper-lead-zinc deposit resulted in a large final mining void (600 m + 150 m + 70 m) and extensive underground workings. The underground workings were partly filled with tailings and the open pit was partly backfilled with acid producing sulfidic waste rock. In addition, the pit serves as a sink for acidic run-off from adjacent waste rock piles and mine workings. To date, the backfill of sulfidic waste rock placed into the pit has not been capped with benign materials and for most of the dry season, the surface of the backfill is covered by melanterite-type efflorescences. Results of kinetic column leach experiments conducted on the sulfidic waste indicate that Cd, Cu, Zn and SO4 rich waters migrate from the backfilled sulfidic waste into the local unconfined aquifer. However, the seepage of alkaline (pH 7.3 - 8.0), high conductivity (>10 000 ¦S/cm) tailings waters into the remaining pit void clearly shows that the acid leachate originating from the sulfidic waste rock does not impact beyond the waste repository and its immediate environment. Geochemical modelling implies that minimal or no mixing occurs between the acid waste rock leachate and the alkaline tailings waters.

Georgius Agricola wrote in De Re Metallica in 1556 that a prudent a miner should not work in a region ruled by a tyrant-a person inimical to mining. In 1926, Associate Chief Sherman of the United States Forest Service in a speech stated, "It is the policy of the Forest Service to encourage the development of the mineral resources within the boundaries of the National Forests ... a man who fails to cultivate a friendly, helpful, cooperative spirit in his relations with those who are endeavoring to develop the mineral wealth of our mountains has no place in the Forest Service." Both statements are as true today as they were in 1556 and 1926. The challenge to the Forest Service and the mineral industry today is to maintain that cooperation in a world that has changed significantly since Agricola and Sherman. The United States Forest Service manages 77,000,000 hectares of land-mostly in the Western United States-an area equal in size to New South Wales. The vast majority-75 million hectares are National Forests, and 1.6 million hectares are National Grasslands. National Wilderness Areas account for 13 million hectares or rough- ly 17 per cent of the National Forest System. National Forest System lands (NFS) are some of the most visible, scenic and controversial lands in the country. They are also some of the most valuable for their mineral potential and production. The value of mineral produced exceeds US$4 billion per year. There are over 1200 producing mines, 15,000 oil and gas leases, and some of the largest lead, copper, silver, gold, platinum, molyb- denum, and coal deposits in the hemisphere. Every year the Forest Service approves nearly 5,000 mineral operations on the NFS. Much of the NFS (75 per cent) is open to location of mining claims pursuant to the 1872 Mining Law. And an equal amount of land is legally available for oil and gas leasing.

IncoÆs Clarabelle mill currently processes ores from eight mines in the Sudbury basin area in Ontario, Canada. The ore from the Garson mine contains a much higher concentration of arsenic than the other ores. Adding this ore into the feed to the mill has resulted in an increase in arsenic content of the Cu-Ni bulk concentrate to a level that significantly affects the smelter operation, and more importantly the efficiency of Cu-Ni separation in the Matte separation plant. The arsenic occurs mainly as gersdorffite (NiAsS), with a small amount being in the form of cobaltite (CoAsS). Extensive laboratory tests on depressing arsenic in Garson ore flotation have been conducted and two reagent suites have been identified as effective arsenic depressants. One is the so called MAA depressant which is a mixture of magnesium chloride, ammonium chloride, and ammonium hydroxide. This reagent combination was reported to depress other arsenide minerals such as arsenopyrite (FeAsS) and enargite (Cu3AsS4). However, in this study for the first time it has been shown to have a depressing effect on gersdorffite. The other reagent suite, a mixture of triethylenetetramine (TETA) and sodium sulfite, that has been reported as an effective pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS) depressant in pentlandite ((NiFe)9S8) flotation, has not been reported as gersdorffite depressant before. The effectiveness of both reagent suites is more pronounced when the arsenic minerals are oxidised through pulp aeration or the addition of hydrogen peroxide. With a flow sheet consisting of a magnetic separation, rougher- scavenger flotation, followed by regrinding and cleaning of combined magnetic and scavenger concentrate, the arsenic recovery to the final Cu-Ni bulk concentrate was reduced from 73 per cent in baseline test to less than 30 per cent with either reagent suite at no decrease in nickel recovery. The TETA/sulfite reagent combination has the advantage over the MAA suite in that pyrrhotite is also depressed, rather than being activated, and the copper and nickel concentrate grades are therefore increased.

The self-organising map (SOM) is an exploratory data mining technique that is both non-traditional and underutilised. Methodologies based on SOM tend to be data-driven and unsupervised, which makes them ideal to assist in the integrated analysis and interpretation of complex and disparate æmineral explorationÆ data sets. While traditional statistical multivariate approaches have difficulty with relationships that are non-linear and data distributions that are not normal, SOM-based data mining procedures are useful in these circumstances. In a SOM analysis each sample is treated as a vector in a data space defined by the variables; and measures of vector similarity, such as the dot-product or Euclidean distance, are used to order or segment a data set into naturally occurring populations. These groupings are positioned as nodes, or groups of nodes, on a 2D rectilinear representation of the multi-dimensional ædata spaceÆ, which is the æself organized mapÆ. While it is common not to include a sampleÆs locational information in the actual SOM analysis, such information can be used to display the spatial location of samples coded by their SOM node or cluster. If one finds there are coherent spatial patterns belonging to samples from particular nodes, or groups of nodes, then there is strong evidence that the technique is determining patterns and relationships within the data that have natural significance. Variations of the SOM technique may be used to perform broad categories of operations, including: 1. outlier identification û for samples belonging to various nodes or grouping of nodes; 2. function fitting, prediction, estimation or imputation û for calibrating relationships between variables and determining replacement values for missing, null or censored values; 3. clustering, pattern recognition or noise reduction û for determining the natural patterns within a data set; and 4. classification û for classifying samples into the clusters determined in three. Gold mineralisation at the Penjom gold deposit in the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia is hosted in structurally-controlled quartz-carbonate veins that display a variable degree of overprinting events under a ductile-brittle regime. Mineralised veins are categorised into two main types: shear and extension veins. Shear veins are interpreted as forming during the fold and thrust episode (D2 event) along the bedding and the Penjom Thrust ore zone. The shear veins are associated with discordant extension veins. In addition, NE- to NNE-trending splays and Penjom-Thrust-parallel reverse-dextral and locally NNW to N–S reverse-sinistral faults overprint earlier vein events, forming a new episode of extensional veins during the D3 event. This is mostly at the fault contacts of intrusives, either as shallow-dipping or vertical-sheeted stockwork or brecciated veins. At least two episodes of faulting comprising D4-D5 are evident, which postdates the main episodes of veining and mineralisation. This is indicated by a series of late episode N–S-trending sinistral and oblique to normal faults that transect and displace the Penjom Thrust and the folded footwall sequence at low angles, and are interpreted to be responsible for intensive vein deformation along the Penjom Thrust and displacement of the orebody. Structural interpretations of mineralised veins suggest that the veins were formed under a compressional to transpressional regime, with later post-vein displacement in a transtensional to extensional regime. Digger Rocks is one of several nickel-bearing sulphide deposits localised within komaLiitic volcanics of the Forrestania Greenstone Bell within the Archaean YiIgam Block of Western Australia. Exploration and evaluation to April 1990 have delineated a resource, at a nominal cut-off grade of 0.5 per cent Ni, of 1.9 Mt at 1.1 per cent Ni within a lensoid sulphide body which strikes NW, dips 50°SW, and occurs at a depth of 30 - 110 m below surface. There has been no production from any of the Forrestania nickel deposits to-date. The deposit, comprising both disseminated and massive sulphides, has maximum dimensions of 400 m strike, 115 m vertically and 90 m true width. Generally the massive sulphides occur at the base of the disseminated sulphides, on or close to the base of the Digger Rocks dunite. The two main massive sulphide lenses have maximum dimensions of 120 m strike, 75 m vertically and 16 m true width (northern lens) and 60 m strike, 25 m vertically and 4 m true width (southern lens). The average grades of the massive and disseminated sulphides are 5.9 per cent i and 1.2 per cent i respectively. The massive sulphides generally have sharp hangingwall and fOOlwall contacts and display strong internal grade anisolropy.The massive sulphides are mainly within the supergene zone and consist of violarite, pyrite and marcasite. The disseminated sulphides are mainly within the primary zone and consist of pentlandite, pyrrholite, pyrite and minor chalcopyrite. Alteration zones, up to six in number, are complex in detail. The sulphides are capped by an average of 30 m of sub-economic, leached, siliceous, oxidised material.A genetic model for the deposit is described which places Digger Rocks in Category 2 (sulphides in large layered dunite bodies) of the latest classification of komatiitic nickel sulphide deposits in the Yilgam Block of Western Australia by Hill and Gole (1990).
