The Mount Leyshon breccia complex is located on an east-west trending contact between Cambrian metasediments (Puddler Creek Formation) and the Ordovician Mt. Leyshon granite, within the Lolworth-Ravenswood block. Detailed mapping of basement, breccia and igneous unit geometries, crosscutting relationships and resolution of complex chronological relation- ships indicates that the Mt. Leyshon breccia complex should be reinterpreted as a number of intrusive igneous and breccia phases. This is in contrast to a previously published account of a largely extrusive geological setting. A complex structural history dominated by strike-slip faulting is preserved within the basement units and is responsible for controlling the location and geometry of the breccia complex. The breccia complex has been divided into brecciated "basement", "main pipe breccia" and an "interactive magma/breccia sequence". Main pipe breccia (the most voluminous unit within the complex) has been re-interpreted as an intrusive breccia, rather than an extrusive or vent fill as previously proposed. This is based on the following evidence: 1. the facies characteristics of the main pipe breccia, 2. the presence of a progression from cohesive basement through to mixed breccia, 3. minor basement block rotation during breccia complex formation, and 4. the partial structural control on the main pipe breccia. No unambiguous evidence exists for pyroclastic facies, although the fine breccia variant commonly contains "accretionary structures", very similar in appearance to those formed during pyroclastic processes. In view of 1. above, they are interpreted to be the product of particle accretion during upward movement of fragmental material, although an origin due to altera- tion cannot be completely discounted. heir occurrence in the main pipe breccia indicates that their presence within a rock unit is not necessarily diagnostic of nvroclastic nroeesses.

This resulted in the change from solid to hollow steel in the second decade of the present century (2).As the greatest sufferers from the dread disease of silicosis (3), it seemed appropriate that the South African gold mines should be the first to use hollow drill steel. Since then solid drills have become practically obsolete for mining purposes.Water is used with hollow steel drills not only to keep the cutting end cool, but also to assist in preventing the formation of undue dust during drilling. It is of interest to note, however, that water fed through hollow steel or sprayed into the air is only partially effective in removing fine dust particles a few microns in diameter, which particles are said to be the most potent in producing silicosis (3a).So far as the composition of "straight" carbon steel drills is concerned, a commission appointed by the Johannesburg mines carried out a very exhaustive series of tests on drill steels.These drills were manufactured from steel made by all the standard methods, including Swedish, Bessemer, crucible, openhearth, and, to a limited extent, electric furnace steel. It should be remembered that the commissioners' report was issued in 1913, when hollow drill steel had not yet been introduced. Only solid steel drills were then in use.

Mining remains one of the key industries in Australia and many other countries with mineral wealth. In Australia, mining contributes 8.8 per cent to the countryÆs gross domestic product (McKay et al, 2000). In Queensland alone, mineral and petroleum industries contribute approximately $9.4 billion to the StatesÆ gross state product (2001/02) (Young, 2003). Increasing pressure on mining companies to perform in a global marketing environment requires mine management to consider more innovative ways to manage their resources û human, plant and equipment û which includes the gathering and analysis of operations data and information for improved decision making. For any mining operation utilising rubber tyred equipment such as trucks, front-end loaders and ancillary equipment, annual expenditure on tyres and related items can be significant. Even a small reduction in tyre operating costs can have a real effect on the business bottom line performance in the short term. Tyre Application Risk Management (TYREARMÖ) can provide substantial benefits in the long term across a number of KPIs not just through reduction in direct tyre expenditure but through flow-on improvements in safety, productivity and reduced environmental impacts. Several accidents involving tyres have also highlighted an increased need to consider the hazards and resultant risks arising from operations of rubber tyred mining fleets (Torlach and Johnston, 1990). This paper presents the process and results of achieving sustained safety and business improvement through the strategic alliance between an earthmover tyre management service provider, Klinge and Co (Klinge) and a BHP Billiton coal mine. The accompanying case study demonstrates in some detail the overall methodology, and the tools and technologies used where active management of data, its analysis and decisions taken have resulted in a 43 per cent improvement in tyre cost performance and a corresponding reduction in tyre-related downtime since the beginning of the alliance.

Neutralisation, normally using lime, is the most widely used method for treating high flows of acid mine drainage (AMD). Lime costs can be very high however. If carbonate sources could be used to achieve pH values above six, costs could be greatly reduced. For example, use of locally quarried limestone at Mt Lyell could potentially reduce alkali costs from about $A 3.5 to $A 1 million/year. Methods for enhancing the effectiveness of limestone and magnesite for neutralising Mt Lyell and Savage River AMD respectively have been examined through a series of investigations. Small-scale testwork found that the maximum pH economically achievable with ground limestone was about five, due to slow dissolution rates and surface armouring. The problems of surface armouring were greatly reduced by the use of crushed limestone or magnesite at high pulp densities (75 per cent solids w/w), enabling pH values >6 to be achieved in a practical time frame. The use of particle sizes in the range 6 mm and finer also reduces costs by avoiding the need for grinding, and reduces the problems of solid-liquid separation and solid recycling that arise if large additions of ground carbonate are used. Pilot scale tests were carried out using tumbling drum reactors with limestone and Mt Lyell AMD and a pulsed-bed static reactor with magnesite and Savage River AMD. pH values averaging 6.2 and 6.4 were achieved with Mt Lyell and Savage River AMD respectively. Approximately 80 per cent of feed acidity was neutralised. A preliminary engineering design and cost estimate has been completed on the pulsed-bed reactor and shows that the concept is technically feasible and, if results are confirmed, economically attractive. Further pilot testing is planned.

Oxy-ACETYLENE system of welding and cutting is at present practised in two forms, which may be described as the high and lowpressure systems. In the high-pressure system the two gases, oxygen and acetylene, are delivered. to the blow-pipe under pressure from properly constructed trade cylinders. Oxygen cylinders are in two sizes, each containing 100 and 200 cub. ft. of gas respectively. These cylinders are charged to a pressure of 120 atmospheres, or 1800 lb. per sq. in. approximately. The acetylene cylinders are made in one size as far as the writer knows, and contain 200 cub. ft. of acetylene gas at a pressure of 10 atmospheres. Each cylinder is provided with a valve and connection for attaching a regulator to "break down" the high pressure in the cylinders to the necessary low working pressure of the blow-pipes, and to deliver the two gases at a constant pressure irrespective of the variable pressures in the cylinders. These regulators can be adjusted down to as low as 1 lb. and are provided with two pressure gaugesone reading the contents of the cylinder in atmospheres, and the other the working pressure in lb. per sq. in. The high-pressure, or "two cylinder" system is compact and can readily be transported from place to place in the works. For this purpose the two cylinders are mounted on an easy-running 4-wheeled truck, which the operator and assistant find no difficulty in manipulating. In the low-pressure system the two gases are delivered to the blow-pipe, one from the oxygen cylinder and the other from the acetylene gas generating plant, which consists of the following:Generating cylinder, half filled with water, into which the cathoide is plunged. The Late Miocene gold-silver bearing epithermal system at Waihi has some close similarities in its paleo-thermal and -geochemical structure with modern, volcanic-hosted geothermal systems such as Ohaaki-Broadlands. At Waihi an extensive braided quartz vein system is enveloped by hydrothermally altered andesites with minor tuff breccias and tuffs. A main stage of vein filling consists of multiple phases of chalcedonic quartz and fine to medium grained quartz, which are accompanied by pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and acanthite below the base of oxidation. Platy calcite is present locally. Fluid inclusion studies indicate that the main stage quartz was deposited at temperatures of 189¦-273¦C from dilute (T¦ of -0.1 to -1.0¦C) fluids that were locally boiling. Homogenisation temperature Th versus T. data points lie within the field enveloped by dilution and boiling/gas loss paths determined for the Ohaaki geothermal field, and indicates that the parent hydrothermal fluid for the Waihi epithermal system had a similar composition to that at Ohaaki, ie 0.2 wt% equiv NaCI and 3.3 wt% equiv CO2. The hydrothermal alteration mineralogy and the isotopic composition of vein calcite indicate that the hydrothermal fluid contained relatively high concentrations of CO 2' as at Ohaaki. Oxygen isotope analyses of main stage quartz range from 6.1 to 11.6 %o and of vein calcite from 2.29 to 9.4% . Calculated d8Ow.½ values for the hydrothermal fluid that deposited the main stage quartz range from - 2.0 to -5.7%c , with a trend to less negative values with depth. They are similar to those in the deep chloride fluid in active geothermal systems with a substantial fluid throughput. A high fluid throughput at Waihi system is also evident from the extensive high intensity hydrothermal alteration and large volume of quartz deposited in the vein system.

These may be found with goethite through mechanisms including direct substitution or coprecipitation of nanocrystalline phases. Understanding P incorporation in goethite has significant implications for Australia’s iron ore industry as it lowers their commodity value. The current study tests a novel low-temperature technique to extract P impurities from synthetic goethite phases under O2-free ambient conditions by utilising Fe(II)-catalysed recrystallisation. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of the Fe(II)-catalysed recrystallisation of goethite on the geochemical behaviour (mobility and speciation) of co-associated P. To achieve this, we tracked changes in labile P (aqueous and 1M NaOH extractable) concentrations over time in goethite suspensions which were reacted with Fe(II)aq for 14 days under circumneutral pH conditions and room temperature conditions. Temporal changes in Fe mineralogy were investigated via synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Iron K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy confirmed goethite as the only mineral phase in P-free treatments while goethite (~86 per cent) and feroxyhyte (~14 per cent) were the main phases in 1.0 per cent P-containing treatments after a 14- day reaction with Fe(II)aq. According to our findings, the treatment of P-goethite with Fe(II) for a duration of 7–14 days, followed by a 24-hour extraction of the reacted solids using 1M NaOH, results in the removal of approximately 79.5 per cent of the initial P content. This removal encompasses both the aqueous fraction (~4.5 per cent) and the surface adsorbed fraction (~75 per cent) from the 1 per cent P-bearing mineral phase. Notably, this approach demonstrates an improvement in P extractability, with approximately a 10 per cent increase compared to the 1 per cent P-goethite sample that was not reacted with Fe(II).

To provide suitable backfill material for the cut and fill mining method being used to extract ore from the C.S.A. mine, flotation tailings are deslimed in single stage cyclones. The sand fraction is stored on the surface in unagitated storage bins before being pumped underground, while the slime portion is thickened and pumped to a residue dam. Design and operating details of the sand preparation and storage sections are given.The initial preparation of a stope for filling, consists of laying percolation and decantation drainage pipes on the sill floor. Preparation for fllling of subsequent lifts consists of rearing up the ventilation pipes at the ends of the stope, preparing the decantation system, and building a barricade or wall. The fill is carried to, and discharged into, the stope through 4 in. diameter pipes and filling of any section is carried out 24 hr/day normally without supervision. The fill is retieulated underground to the 1200 ft level through rubber lined pipe installed in the upcast shaft. Boreholes of 3 in. diameter drilled from the1200 ft level convey fill to the 1800 ft level. The mine drainage system is basically designed to handle the water associated with hydraulic filling. A system of primary and secondary sumps has been installed to handle the percolation and decantation drainage from stapes and to allow settling of fines before the water is fed to the main pump station.A programme of investigation into the properties of the emplaced fill is in progress. Results to date indicate that the fill as presently placed and drained, will not cause any problems in the mining of vertical orebodies by cut and fill methods for lifts in excess of 300 ft.

Due to the haphazard application of static tests in South Africa, several methods and interpretations have been followed. This has resulted in confusion amongst practitioners and regulators in the use and validity of these methods. Research was done over a two-year period to define standardised methods and interpretation of results. This included laboratory testing and continuous consultation with all interested parties throughout the country. The research yielded a modified ABA, based on several existing methods. The methodology includes AP determination using hydrogen peroxide, and an analysis of the supernatant by ICP. This has the advantage of not only registering reactive sulfur, but also provides the NAG pH, that enhances the interpretation and QC of the tests. Analysis of the supernatant provides an indication of heavy metal solubilisation, should acid conditions arise. One hundred and seventeen samples were compared to Leco S analyses and provided a good correlation. The Leco values were slightly elevated due to the reporting of total S as opposed to æreactive SÆ. The NP method deviates from the usual methodology, in that H2SO4 is used (to provide a field analogy) and the fact that a 24-hour stabilisation period is allowed before back-titration. The latter modification appears to prevent psuedo-buffering by transient phases. These methods have also been tested for repeatability and prove to be robust. A very simple macro-driven spreadsheet, æABACUSÆ, was also developed. This spreadsheet allows the entry of basic data and provides a detailed interpretation and graphical display of typical ABA data. In cases where drill holes are used, the Pennsylvanian approach of volume calculation can also be done with ABACUS. The results of the research have been distributed to interested parties in South Africa and it is hoped that these methods and their application will find widespread acceptance.

Gold mineralisation at the Kerimenge-Lemenge prospects is a classical example of myltiple, overprinting events, associated with intrusive-related hydrothermal systems. Repeated emplacement of high level dacitic porphyry bodies (Edie Porphyry; 2.4 - 3.8 Ma) was accompanied by a phreatomagmatic eruption which formed a diatreme-maar complex. Later hydrothermal fluids utilised permeable fault zones and diatreme contacts. Mineralisation took place during two main events. Stage I consists of early quartz - illite/sericite - carbonate phase with associated pyrite-arsenopyrite mineralisation. This phase is zoned from quartz - sericite-pyrite/arsenopyrite in the south at depth, to dominantly manganocarbonate - illitic clay - arsenopyrite- pyrite_s significant base metals in the north and at shallow levels. The majority of known gold (18.1 Mt @ 2.0 g/t Au) at Kerimenge is associated with Stage I activity. The gold occurs primary within the lattice of the sulphides and is metallurgically refractory. Fluid inclusion studies indicate early boiling and progressive cooling and dilution of hydrothermal fluids during the evolution of the Stage I event. Near paleosurface condensation of gases, which evolved off the boiling system at depth, produced abundant low pH bicarbonate fluids. During the waning phases of Stage I activity, these bicarbonate condensate fluids descended down permeable structures and formed banded manganocarbonate veins. High grade non-refractory gold mineralisation during Stage II event is restricted to favourable structures at relatively shallow levels and in the northern regions of the prospect area. Gold in this event exhibits a distinctive Au - Ag - Te -Cu geochemical signature, and is associated with hessite - tennantite - chalcopyrite mineralisation within quartz veining. Alteration and fluid inclusion studies indicate that this style of mineralisation is a result of the quenching of pulses of hot, late magmatic mineralised fluids by the cold condensate waters.

Underground rock mechanics was initiated as a formal discipline in Australia by early studies for underground structures for the Snowy Mountains Scheme in the 1950s. These techniques were quickly embraced by underground mining and there has been steady development to the present time. The paper reviews the status of current techniques for rock mechanics studies and discusses some important issues such as ground support, mine filling and caving. It concludes that a considerable degree of engineering judgement is still required for the practical application of rock mechanics to underground mine design.

In earlier studies along a mining region recipient (the river VormbScken, northern Sweden), the fraction of certain trace metals recovered in the particulate phase has been found to increase with increasing concentrations of particulate iron. This study was conducted to see if the pattern could be reproduced by adding minor amounts of ferrous iron, simulating groundwater inputs. When the iron is oxidised in the near neutral river water, it will form iron oxyhydroxides and precipitate. Trace metals may be either co-precipitated along with the iron, or adsorbed onto the freshly formed precipitates. If this is the case, such a mechanism may be incorporated as a part of a final polishing step in a mine drainage treatment system based on natural attenuation processes. The experiments were performed at 0¦C and 22¦C, on authentic river waters collected during the winter and summer of 2002, respectively. In order to investigate the influence of particles and bacteria initially present, filtered river waters (4 solution were added to the experimental beakers, increasing the iron content of the waters by 0 - 1.5 mg/L. The oxidation and precipitation processes were followed by means of filtration (0.2 ¦m) for up to seven days. In order to be able to compare the experimental results with the actual field situation, on both experimental occasions, surface water samples were collected also from three stations situated along the river. The samples collected were analysed for iron, calcium, and trace metals by AAS and ICP-MS. The iron oxyhydroxides formed in the experiment did not influence the partitioning of As, Cu, and Pb to the same extent as the particulate iron encountered along the river appeared to do. The Olympic Dam copper/uranium deposit was discovered in 1975 and subsequently commenced production in 1988 at a rate of 1.5 Mtpa using the sublevel open stoping mining method. In the following five years the operation underwent two optimisation programs that have increased mine output to the current rate of 3.4 Mtpa of ore. The pre-expansion requirements were annual development of approximately 10 000 m and the placement of around 500 000 m 3 /yr of cemented backfill. Previous to 1995 all hoisting was carried out by the Whenan shaft. The Robinson shaft was commissioned during that year to hoist increasing development mullock tonnages and to allow for increased ore hoist via the Whenan system. In 1996 WMC committed to expanding the output of the operation from 85 000 tpa (1996/97 budget) copper metal to 200 000tpa. The corresponding increase in mine ore production requires expansion to a nominal rate of 9.0 Mtpa. To achieve these increased tonnages, major hardware installations will include sinking of a third shaft capable of hoisting in excess of 9.5 Mtpa, a rail haulage horizon utilising automatic trains, expansion of the existing backfill plant to a production capacity of over 1.8 million m 3 /yr, increasing long term development rates to 15 000 m/yr and increasing the production drilling and blasting rates in line with the higher stope production output. This paper provides detail into the intended hardware (shafts, equipment, etc) of the mining system, and outlines the intended long-term operation and management of the operation. Of particular note is the background requirement of ensuring existing production targets are met to provide critical cashflows into the project during the period of expansion.

Geological maps of the Pacific Rim recently published by the Circum-Pacific Council for Energy and Mineral Resources have provided a useful perspective from which to view modern plate interaction and the evolution of modern fold belts. An important lesson from any study of modern plate interaction is that of the normality of change. The chaotic is more usual than the simple. Present day convergent margins with mixed characteristics are measures of this chaos. Indeed, the character of less than one third of the present length of the Pacific Rim can be ascribed to conventional models of plate interaction. Another lesson is that of the great mobility of oceanic crust. Enormous areas of the Pacific may not be represented in future fold belts developed at convergent boundaries unless normal consumption processes are disrupted, and even then only by linear zones a few kilometres wide. The axes of divergent boundaries creating Pacific Ocean crust have been equally mobile, with new spreading sites taking over from older sites through time. Divergent boundaries, whether active or inactive, consist of oceanic crust, and may be wholly consumed at collision sites with convergent boundaries. Their only potential contributions to fold belt evolution are transforms and magmatic activity. It is this transform component that can provide us with a mechanism to explain the apparent contradiction of both compressional and extensional features occurring together in a developing fold belt. Reconstructions for the SW Pacific are used to demonstrate that the fold belts under construction during the last 4% (Jurassic- Recent) of geologic time have involved interaction between convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries. THE exceptional rainfall characteristic of the West Coast of Tasmania, in conjunction with the rugged topography of the district, has always suggested the utilization of water-power, and from the earliest days of the Mount Lyell Company theeventual installation of a hydro-electric power scheme, making use of some near-lying lake, has constantly been kept in view. At the period of the inception of the company, however, the time was not ripe for such an undertaking, and it is only oflate that the various important considerations involved have sanctioned incun;ing the heavy expenditure necessary, with the positive assurance of permanently reaping the benefits expected. The West Coast of Tasmania contains many lakes of varioussites; situated at high levels, and, although the catchments of these lakes are not very extensive, still, the excessive rainfall is so constant over long periods that its regularity may be relied on as offsetting the limited catchments. The explanation of the abnormal rainfall is simply the circumstance that the West Coast Range forms the first high land barrier which is met by the moisture-laden westerly and north-westerly winds blowing off the Southern Ocean. By the time the clouds strike the mountains they ride very low, consequently the elevation of the range, the peaks of which do not exceed 3000 to 4000 ft. above the sea, is sufficient to cause a copious precipitation. Lake Margaret, which is situated five miles north of the reduction works, was first recognized as a possible source of waterpower by Mr. Hugh Ohrisp, a surveyor, who visited it about 1893-4. BHP-Utah Coal Limited's Peak Downs Mine is located in Cen- tral Queensland, approximately 200 km south west of Mackay. The annual raw coal production of the mine is over 8 million tpa, requiring the removal of about 40 million cubic metres of prime overburden. This is achieved through the use of five large draglines. The large depths of overburden (up to 55 metres) encountered over half the strike length of the mine enables cast blasting to be carried out in conjunction with draglines employ- ing the chopping method of digging. The objective of cast blast- ing is to use explosive energy to move as much material directly into spoil as possible. The additional costs of drilling and blast- ing are offset by reducing dragline rehandle. Two factors which are of primary importance to the design of cast blasts are initiation control and material velocity. High speed motion picture photography is a powerful diagnostic tool to quantify these aspects of blasting (Winzer, Montenyohl and Ritter, 1979; Chiappetta et al., 1983; Anon., 1983). The objec- tives of such analysis are to: 1. Determine the burden velocity, 2. Determine the time to initial movement (that is, the inter- val between a face hole firing and the initial movement of the burden), 3. Check the accuracy of the initiation sequence. BHP Central Research Laboratories (CRL) and Peak Downs Mine monitored a cast blast in the mine's Winchester Pit on 18 August, 1988. The objectives of this exercise were to: 1. Quantify current cast blast performance, providing a base case for comparison with modified blast design. 2. Compare two orientations of angled holes within the blast. 3. Assess the effectiveness of cast blasting utilising an air-deck. 4. Check blast timing with respect to burden movement times.

An empirical method of estimating dense rock (D.R.E.) equivalent volumes erupted as airfall tephra, described in a companion paper in this volume, is elaborated, and its accuracy discussed. Estimates obtained from a single eruption can be classified as to whether they show positive, negative, or constant relative dispersion. For positively dispersed tephras (estimated volumes increasing with distance), this procedure improves the accuracy of the method. The technique is applied to selected andesitic tephras erupted from Egmont Volcano, New Zealand, during the last 28 000 years, which are found to range in volume from about 1.5 x 107 m3 up to about 2.4 x 108 m3 D.R.E. With a factor of about 16 between the smallest and largest volumes, this contrasts sharply with the rhyolite volcanoes in New Zealand, where the difference factor is usually of the order of 100. The largest tephra eruptions at Egmont are small compared to the largest debris avalanches, which have exceeded 1010 m3 (10 km3) in volume.The magnitude versus frequency relationship, calculated using a maximum likelihood method, establishes the limits of eruption magnitude at Mt Egmont as 107 to 109 m3 D.R.E. For some volcanoes, the magnitude-frequency relationship changes with time, owing to clustering of eruptions, separated by long dormant intervals. Ngauruhoe Volcano, New Zealand, is an example. Within eruptive episodes, the mean interval between eruptions of >_ 105 m3 is about 0.9 ¦ 0.65 years. The mean interval between eruptive episodes in which >_ 106 m3 is erupted, including episodes in which this volume is erupted gradually, is about 25.8 ¦ 6.6 years, and the mean dormant interval between all episodes is about 5.2 ¦ 3.0 years. At present Ngauruhoe is in an unusually prolonged dormant period, 50% longer than any in the historical record, since 1839.

Shaft guide reaetions in No. 2 Ore Shaft, Mount Isa Mines Limited, have been reduced to a low order of magnitude by the use of self aligning slippers and spring loaded guide rollers. Before commissioning the new 4500 h.p. winder at No. 2 Ore Shaft in January, 1958, it was realised that the increase in hoisting speed from 1800 to 2650 ft/min. would cause high shaft guide reactions which would be increased further when the elongated 12 ton skips replaced the existing 7 ton skips.The Cambridge accelerometer was used to measure the shaft guide reactions and to confirm that progressive skip modifications were resulting in reduced reactions. The skip modifications were completed in 4 weeks.INTRODUCTIONIn 1956 an expansion programme was initiated to increase production from 5000 to 11000 tons per mining day. At No. 2 Ore Shaft the 1500 h.p. winder operated at 1800 ft./min. and hoisted a 7 ton capacity skip. The new 4500 h.p. winder operates at 2650 ft./min. and hoists a 12 ton capacity skip. No. 2 Ore shaft is equipped with two 5 ft. by 5 ft. hoisting compartments (Fig. 1) and any increase in skip capacity meant an abnormally long skip. This feature, coupled with the increase in hoisting speed, could have caused very high shaft guide reactions. Before commissioning the 4500 h.p. winder, a Cambridge accelerometer was borrowed from the University of Adelaide and was used to measure the shaft guide reactions. Rather than carry out an extensive shaft timbering programme, the skips were modified by fitting cushioned guide shoes and spring loaded guide rollers (Fig. 1). Testing commenced in February, 1958, and was completed in March, 1958.

Groundwater geochemistry is controlled by chemical interactions with aquifer rocks, and offers a powerful geochemical exploration technique for locating concealed mineral- isation. Techniques are applied for identifying constituents of aquifers using the compositions of their groundwaters, collected from the surface through drill holes, water bores or springs. Even slowly moving groundwaters have passed through large volumes of rocks which surround any sample site. Products from these rock-water contacts modify the groundwater. By relating water composition to the minerals from which the dissolved species may have been derived, geochemical exploration information is obtained for a significantly larger zone than is represented by drill hole rock samples. In this paper we describe some solution chemical tech- niques we are applying in mineral exploration, particularly in areas of Australia where ground- waters are highly saline and contain enhanced concentrations of trace metals. EQUILIBRIUM MODELS FOR SALINE GROUNDWATERS Central to our technique is the assumption that in low rainfall regions, aquifer rocks and contained groundwaters are in chemical equili- brium. Solubility calculations then allow us to predict upper limits to the soluble products of groundwater interaction with aquifer rocks and to identify minerals with which the groundwater is saturated. Whilst equilibrium calculations require input of concentrations of all dissolved species, they are actually based on "activity" of dissolved species rather than the analysed concentrations. Unless waters have very low ionic strengths (a measure of total dissolved solids), activity of a solute is not equal to its analytical concentration but equals concentration multiplied by an "activity coefficent". Several methods exist for calculating mineral solubilities. The ion-association model, commonly used in programs such as WATEQ (Truesdell and Jones, 1974) and later deriv- atives such as MINTEQ, assume the formation of complex ions such as MgSO4(0), CaCl+, which are described by formation constants.
