Froth flotation is one of the most widely used beneficiation processes for fine and ultrafine coals and minerals. Maintaining optimal metallurgical performance in industrial flotation operation is still a challenging task owing to the lack of an effective tool to diagnose the flotation performance in realtime. For this purpose, a number of flotation performance monitoring systems with different working principles have been developed to provide instant feedback for process control and optimisation. In this paper, for the first time, five different flotation performance monitoring systems were systematically compared through an on-site trial in a coking coal flotation plant in Queensland, Australia. The monitoring systems were used to measure (i) gas holdup, (ii) overflowing froth velocity, (iii) overflowing froth height, (iv) air recovery and (v) drag force exerted by overflowing froth, in an industrial flotation column and the outputs of these systems were collected simultaneously at a wide range of operating conditions. For each monitoring system, the best regression model describing the correlation between the system output and the flotation performance was selected from various regression models (eg linear, quadratic, power-law and logarithmic) using the Akaike information criterion (AIC). A comparison of the coefficient of determination (R2 ), residual sum of squares (RSS) and measuring accuracy at 95 per cent confidence level of the best regression models of these monitoring systems suggested that the drag sensor outperformed the other systems at a wide range of flotation operating conditions. The superior performance of the drag sensor was attributed to its distinctive design that enabled intimate sensing of variation of the overflowing froth properties. Furthermore, the drag sensor had the ability to monitor feed ash content variation when the other operation variables were set almost constant.

The high intensity zone within the Jameson Cell is the downcomer. It is largely external and separated from the flotation tank. This, together with operation of the downcomer under vacuum, rather than at elevated pressure and the absence of moving parts, allows ready access to the high intensity zone for measurement and analysis. Experimentation was conducted allowing measurements of recovery for residence times of between 20 milliseconds and ten seconds within the downcomer of a Jameson Cell. The affect of aeration rate on the recovery of different particle sizes was also studied.

A promising source for the extraction of rare metals and REEs in Russia is the eudialyte ores of the Lovozero deposit, which do not contain active uranium components. The eudialyte ore reserves of the Lovozero Massif are considered virtually unlimited and therefore have the potential to become a primary source of a number of rare and rare earth metals. The goal of this study was to comprehensively examine the effect of the parameters of high-power nanosecond electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP) and dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) on the leaching performance of eudialyte concentrate and the selective separation of zirconium and REEs from productive solutions. Using scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy, the mechanism behind the intensification of acidic dissolution of eudialyte as a result of pretreatment with energy impacts was described. During the HPEMP treatment, weakening and destruction of the eudialyte surface was observed, which at the substructural level is expressed in the deformation and local destruction of Si10O27, Si9MO30 resulting in formation of microcracks. During the DBD treatment, the formation of characteristic defects was observed in the form of imprints of dielectric breakdown microchannels and individual mineral fragments. Pretreatment of eudialyte concentrate using HPEMP made it possible to increase the recovery of zirconium into the pregnant solution of leaching by 3.4–4.3 per cent (from 86.6 per cent to 90.9 per cent) and by 4.1 per cent (from 86.6 per cent to 90.6 per cent) when using DBD. The increase in the total recovery of REEs was 1.2–1.8 per cent (from 87.7 per cent to 89.2 per cent). The effect of pH values, solution temperature, initial concentrations of valuable components on the successive recovery performance of zirconium and REEs from the pregnant solutions nitric from the acid leaching of eudialyte concentrate by chemical precipitation was examined. The possibility of selective separation of the zirconium product and rare earth elements with a zirconium recovery of 99.95 per cent and a REE recovery of 87.5 per cent was established. REE loss with the zirconium product was 8.0 per cent and 4.5 per cent with the spent pregnant solution.

This paper discusses how advanced manufacturing technology (AMT), which is fundamentally reliant on and developed via multi-disciplinary skills, has benefitted non-mining industries, and what lessons can be derived from this experience to benefit the mining industry, particularly underground coal mining. Examples of AMT use in æconventionalÆ industry, some drawn from the more than 25 years experience in many different industries of the Automation and Robotics team at the University of Wollongong, are described to show typical benefits, risks and opportunities expected in using AMT. Applying AMT to mining brings many unique challenges and this paper expands on these and then provides practical examples of how a multi-disciplinary team can develop new processes and systems leading to productivity, safety and other benefits for underground coal mining.

A novel explosive formulation that substitutes the use of ammonium nitrate (AN) with hydrogen peroxide (HP) as the main oxidising agent has been developed and tested as part of an Australian Coal Industry Research Program (ACARP) project. The main objective was to provide a step-change solution that has the potential to completely eliminate NOx fumes in blasting. The development of this HP/fuel-based explosive started with a comprehensive detonation characterisation program, consisting of unconfined velocity of detonation (VOD) measurements of samples at different diameters, densities and void sensitisation techniques. VOD results showed that the HP/fuel-based explosive mixtures behaved similarly to non-ideal commercial explosives; in that way mixtures could be tailored to achieve specific detonation performance targets. The next stage of testing in this development involved preliminary confined tests to evaluate the rock breakage potential of the HP/fuel-based explosive mixtures. Fully instrumented single-hole tests were conducted in a limestone quarry. Results from these preliminary trials confirmed the rock breakage performance of HP/fuel-based explosive mixtures. The confined VOD measured in one of the tests was 5100 m/s in a 102 mm diameter blasthole at a density of 0.96 g/ml. The corresponding borehole pressure measurement of this HP charge was 2.61 GPa with a detonation temperature of 2921°C. Based on near-field accelerations, both HP and ANFO charges displayed similar attenuation characteristics in the test conditions. Post-blast observations indicated that the breakage performance of the HP mixtures clearly reflected the in-hole detonation performance measurements obtained, confirming the ability of these explosive mixtures to both fragment and effectively displace the rock mass under evaluation. Further research work continues with the future commissioning of a prototype mixing and delivery unit, the successful completion and analysis of data from multiple-hole trials, and further characterisation work associated with product stability, reliability and performance under different geotechnical conditions.CITATION:Onederra, I and Araos, M, 2015. In late 1984, Council of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy accepted a proposal to establish a Mineral Heritage Committee. This was to be involved in matters relating to mineral heritage-its recording, its preservation, and the acknowledgement that it can be of use to the mineral industry in the future. The Committee was established to ensure that all of the disciplines of our profession were included and that, so far as possible, all of our country as well as those countries of the Southwest Pacific Basin were represented. Some work has been commenced to bring real- isation of the importance of the heritage of our mineral industry to the forefront of the commu- nity's interest. There is not a state in this country and the Southwest Pacific where the mineral industry has not at various times proved to be the basis of community development.

The George Fisher deposit is a significant sediment hosted silver-leadzinc resource located 2 km north of the Hilton Mine in NW Queensland. The George Fisher feasibility project involved the completion of underground and surface drilling programs to delineate Measured and Indicated Resource which could be converted to an Ore Reserve through mining and commercial studies. The geological information which was collected and used for the feasibility study included a major program of diamond drilling, predominantly from underground sites, but with some drilling also completed from surface. All drillcore was geologically and geotechnically logged, sampled and assayed. Data was also collected from underground cross-cut and drive development which was mapped for rocktype, ore distribution, structure and geotechnical condition. This new geological data, generated during the Pre-Feasibility and Feasibility stages, was combined with results of all previous drilling campaigns in the George Fisher area to produce a comprehensive database on which geological modelling and Resource estimation could be based. To allow fast and accurate collection and utilisation of data from the drilling program, digital collection processes were used where possible. This resulted in rapid data entry into the project database, significantly enhanced data quality, 100 per cent data ownership within the project team and increased productivity levels. Processes used during the project data collection program are described, lessons learned are related and suggestions for ænext timeÆ are listed using the benefit of hindsight.

"Booster fans are relatively rare in Australian coal mines. However, as mines become progressivelydeeper it is likely that such fans will be increasingly adopted as a method to sustain or improve the ventilation of underground workings. The reasons why booster fans may be an att ractive alternative include: increased cost of sinking additional ventilation shafts with greater seam depths; environmental objections to shaft sinking projects; and increasing urbanisation and surface constraints limiting availability of potential ventilation shaft sites. As Tahmoor Colliery movedinto its northern lease the ventilation constraints became the limiting factor on production. Thelimitations of the old workings meant that the existing ventilation system would be inadequateto sustain the required production. Extensive ventilation modelling was carried out to evaluatevarious potential solutions and the recommended option was the installation of a booster fanor fans, to gain underground access to an already approved shaft site in the northern lease.Proposals were sought from recognised fan manufacturers and various alternative arrangements were tendered. Ultimately the choice was between one large centrifugal fan and a set (three or four) of smaller æauxiliary-likeÆ fans in parallel. The successful tender was for a single centrifugal, an arrangement very similar to the booster fans that have been operating eff ectively at Westcliff Colliery for a number of years. This paper describes the current ventilation network, evaluation of the ventilation options, the fan selection process, and the project status to date."

In Japan, evaluation of rock mass is crucial in mountain tunnels that are constructed using the NATM (New Austrian Tunneling Method) to determine the support pattern that in turns determine the final support structure of the tunnel. The current evaluation method is highly dependent on the observations of on-site expert engineers that grades the rock mass in four levels across nine criteria: A. Condition of tunnel face. B. Condition of excavated surface. C. Compressive rock strength. D. Weathering. E. Spacing of discontinuity. F. Condition of discontinuity. G. Orientation of discontinuity. H. Spring water. I. Water degradation. However, in recent years, the number of said experts are decreasing rapidly due to labour shortage caused mainly by an aging population and declining birth rates. This is one of the biggest challenges that the construction sector currently faces, and this may affect the efficiency of tunnel construction projects in the future. Thus, this study proposes the implementation of a deep learning tool called the convolutional neural network (CNN) to quantitatively evaluate rock fractures on tunnel face. In addition, Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) is applied to visualise CNN, as well as verify the applicability of CNN to the evaluation of rock fractures. In other words, by creating heat maps of tunnel face images, CNN is utilised to evaluate rock mass in categories that are associated with discontinuities. The CNN model is most accurate when six convolution layers, four pooling layers, and three dense layers are used. This yields an accuracy of 75.0~88.0 per cent. Thus, the CNN model is verified to be feasible method to evaluate rock fractures.

In April 2003 plant upgrades in the æLow GradeÆ Cadia Hill circuit were undertaken in order to improve concentrate quality and metal recoveries from the flotation circuit. The major changes involved: circuit reconfiguration to allow all concentrates to be reground to less than 38 ¦m prior to final cleaning; increasing ball charge in the regrind mill to fully utilise all of the installed power; desliming of the cleaner scavenger concentrate to improve the circuit water balance; and the inclusion of a gravity concentrator in the regrind circuit to recover more free gold to bullion.Once the flotation circuit had stabilised under the new operating conditions concentrate launder modifications and increased froth crowding on the scavenger flotation cells permitted the introduction of stronger collectors without compromising concentrate quality or circuit stability.Twelve months on, the copper concentrate grade has increased by two per cent and metal recoveries increased by three per cent and seven per cent for copper and gold respectively. The project capital outlay of approximately $2.0 million has been repaid in less than three months. This paper will review the project from the design, construction and commissioning perspective as well as the subsequent debottlenecking exercise that was required to eventually yield the full benefits of this upgrade.

Bauxite residue or ‘red mud’ is a by-product of the Bayer Process, the primary process of alumina refining. Due to its high alkalinity and variable composition, its storage and disposal poses high environmental risks to water sources, surrounding ecosystems and human health. The high alkalinity (pH 12–13) is a significant factor in its classification as hazardous waste; to mitigate this, Australian refineries have integrated neutralisation processes into bauxite refining. Both sea water and carbon dioxide neutralisation processes are applicable. Multiple studies have demonstrated pH reduction from 12–13 to 7–10, depending on the method. The key advantages of CO2 neutralisation are that it allows for carbon sequestration and is more effective when utilised as a pre-treatment for recovery of metals, while sea water neutralisation is more established and has been integrated into two Australian refineries. This paper proposes the application of the bacteria Exiguobacterium oxidotolerans for bioleaching of iron from hematite in bauxite residue. The genus Exiguobacterium is characterised by its high levels of adaptability, halotolerance and alkaliphilic nature. E. oxidotolerans is successful at eluting Fe2+ from hematite via reductive dissolution, which complexes with oxalic acid produced during metabolism. This aquatic bacterium presents a novel process pathway for iron elution due to direct interaction of E. oxidotolerans with hematite via the cell membrane and operates within the pH range of neutralised red mud. The proposed mechanism is extracellular electron transfer, a microbial metabolic process where electron transfer is facilitated between bacterial cells and extracellular material. Currently this is being investigated for promotion of seaweed growth in coastal environments as soluble iron aids and fortifies colonies. This has potential downstream applications for cleaner iron and steel production. While theoretical, this paper explores the neutralisation, bioleaching and application of the Fe(II)- and Fe(III)-oxalate complexes formed.

Environmental Geochemistry International (EGi) and the Ian Wark Research Institute (IWRI) collaborated in a three-year Australian Minerals Industry Research Association (AMIRA) research project (Project Number P387A) focussed on the prediction and kinetic control of acid mine drainage. As part of this project, single addition, and sequential net acid generation (NAG) testing was carried out on sulfide mineral samples. The test samples comprised a range of synthetic waste materials prepared using a quartz bulk and controlled quantities of the commonly occurring sulfide minerals; pyrite (FeS2), pyrrhotite (Fe7S8), arsenopyrite (AsFeS), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), chalcocite (Cu2S), covellite (CuS), bornite (Cu5FeS4), galena (PbS) and sphalerite (ZnS). NAG test results clearly show that there are significant differences between the acid forming potential of sulfide minerals. The NAG test results for each mineral were compared with theoretical acidity values (NAPP*). The NAPP* calculation was based on stoichiometric oxidation reactions assumed for each of the sulfide minerals. Sequential NAG values for pyrite corresponds closely to predicted NAPP* values, confirming the assumption that pyrite oxidation occurs according to the stoichiometry assumed. For the pyrite sample with 5 wt per cent S, two NAG stages were sufficient for all of the sulfur to be released to solution. Since sulfides in waste materials will generally be dominated by pyrite, results also confirm the validity of including NAG testing for ARD evaluation of most waste rock. NAG testing confirms that of the sulfide minerals examined, only pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite are acid producing, ie able to produce leachate with a pH less than 4.5. In the case of sphalerite, galena, bornite, chalcocite and covellite the pH of the final NAG solution was greater than 4.5. The significant differences between the acid forming potential of different sulfide minerals could lead to overestimation of acid producing potentials based on NAPP values calculated from total per cent S alone, ie assuming all S is present as pyrite. The oxidation of galena during the NAG test resulted in the consumption of acid. The examination of the galena surface by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) after oxidation in peroxide solution indicated the presence of polysulfide. The reaction of sulfide to polysulfide is acid consuming, thus explaining the net acid consuming behaviour of galena in the NAG test. This reaction pathway may provide a possible explanation for the lower than expected acid production observed for some of the other sulfide minerals examined.

Coal dust explosions have occurred in coal mines across the world. The Mitsui Miike Coal Mine disaster in 1963 was an example of how this hazard was not managed effectively, resulting in the loss of 458 lives and hundreds of people sustaining permanent brain injury from carbon monoxide poisoning. Management of the risks for this hazard have been well documented and have been implemented in modern coal mines. A recent trend in some mines has seen the abolition of barriers on roadways on the basis that the risks are being managed by the current controls. These controls include stone dust application, trickle dusters, dust analysis and dust removal. Traditional mechanised resin rock bolting in hard rock underground mines requires the installation of resin capsules into a pre-drilled hole prior to the rock bolt being spun into a hole to mix the resin and set the bolt in place. In poor rockmass conditions, especially at depth or in highly altered faults and shears, the condition of the holes often deteriorates as the poor ground around it unravels and falls into the hole. This results in partially or fully blocked holes that either damages the resin capsule when they are being inserted into the holes or prevent it entirely until the hole is continuously cleaned of debris. This deterioration of the hole condition, and continuous need to clean and re-drill holes, also increases the diameter of the hole which in turn affects the continuously mechanically coupled anchorage mechanism of the rock bolt to the rockmass as there is simply not enough resin in the hole to fill the annulus between the bolt and the rock. This results in a large increase to critical heading cycle time and, more importantly, results in the rock reinforcement not performing as per design specification and increases the risk of instability. To overcome the quality control issues with resin bolt installation in poor ground, a single pass drill, install, inject and tension self-drilling resin bolt application was designed and implemented for use in such conditions. This system allows the operator to inject a two part polyester resin through a self-drilled hollow bolt to mix and fully encapsulate the rock reinforcement. The self-drilling bolt allows for post injection of the hole after the bolt has been installed into the rock and gives the operator manual or automated control on the amount of resin used in the hole to ensure complete encapsulation and continuously mechanically coupled anchorage to the rock. This allows the reinforcement to work as designed and provide the Geotechnical Engineer extra quality control confidence in these conditions. The implementation of this single pass resin bolting system resulted in significant decreases to the resin bolting cycle time and rock bolt quality control failures. In this paper the design, implementation and embedment into the development cycle will be discussed and the in situ quality control checks used to validate the increase in rock bolt installation quality will be shared. The role of biological agents in the gold mining industry is currently limited to the use of microorganisms in bioleaching and bioremediation. However, there is a variety of possibilities in which biotechnology could aid the mining industry in the future. In this article we discuss the potential for the development of these novel biotechnologies and the role they can play in the exploration for new gold deposits, the processing of ores and the post-mining remediation of sites. The development of these biotechnologies has been enabled by rapid advances in our molecular-level understanding of the role microorganisms play in the solubilisation, dispersion and precipitation of gold. An understanding of the distribution of microbial species in soils overlying mineralisation can be utilised to develop bioindicator systems that assist with gold exploration. An in-depth knowledge of how microorganisms interact with gold complexes is being used to develop in-field biosensors, supporting exploration. Processing technologies may be improved based on advances in our understanding of the interactions between microorganisms, ore minerals, cyanide and gold. For instance, cyanide-producing microorganisms are being investigated for use in in situ leaching of gold. In turn, the use of cyanide-utilising microorganisms for the degradation of cyanide is being explored. To obtain the rock type-I crack propagation process accurately, a novel fixture is used to make the prefabricated crack of rock propagation along the predetermined direction. In this study, the crack propagation process of rock is monitored with the digital image correlation method (DICM), and a mechanical model of crack directional propagation was established. The results show that the simple crack directional propagation device can effectively realise the stable propagation of type-I crack along the predetermined direction, the crack initiation angle is less than 10°, and the deviation between the peak strength of crack propagation calculated by a simplified mechanical model and the tensile strength of Brazilian splitting is 22.76 per cent and 7.53 per cent, respectively. According to the deformation field evolution law, crack propagation can be divided into three stages: microcrack development, main crack propagation, and main crack propagation. As for the rock type-I crack initiation and propagation mechanism, before reaching the peak strength, the prefabricated crack tip is subjected to maximum tensile stress; the elastic energy increases rapidly, and the dissipation energy increases slowly; after the peak strength, elastic energy exceeds its energy storage limit and released rapidly, and most of the input energy is converted into dissipation energy, which makes the crack propagation rapidly. The crack directional propagation device will be further optimised and improved, and it is expected to provide a new method for the study of crack propagation mechanism, rock failure precursor information and crack arrest principle, etc. It will also provide theoretical references for the optimisation of coal strata directional blasting, fracturing, fracture arrest, and other related technologies in geotechnical engineering.
