The brown coal deposits of the Latrobe Valley are ideal for open cut mining and this method has been used since the start of coal winning in 1894. Operations at the main Yall9urn open cut commenced in 1922, but after a few years the main excavators were replaced by German continuous excavators and subsequent developments of Yallourn and the newer Morwell open cut have been based on this type of plant. The reasons for preferring continuous to intermittent excavators in the Latrobe Valley are indicated in this paper.Under the pressure of post-war conditions, and from their long experience and ability, German engineers have recently made substantial improvements in their continuous excavators and these developments have been enhanced by some American innovations. These changes have extended the economic limits of open cut mining and also serve to emphasize the close inter-relation between the nature of coal and overburden deposits, excavator design and methods of operation.As an aid to descriRing recent excavator developments, this interdependence is demonstrated by means of diagrams which show typical methods of operations, together with examples of actual machines using these methods. The types of excavator dealt with are mainly those in use at, or destined for Yallourn or Morwell open cuts, together with additional types used in U.S.A. and Western Europe. For completeness, and also because they will continue in service at Yallourn and Morwell for some years, rail-mounted dredgers have been included in this paper even though in Europe they are now regarded as obsolescent.Explanations are given of how the intrinsic qualities of Latrobe Valley brown coal and overburden have sometimes prevented overseas plants from operating with the full efficiencies and/or in the methods visualized by the manufacturer, and references are made to the modifications and investigations being undertaken to overcome these problems.A compresensive bibliography is given. Dates shown on illustrations are not commissioning dates of the plant concerned, but the year when photographed.

The automated optical image analysis software Mineral4/Recognition4 (M4/R4) is capable of performing comprehensive characterisation of different materials throughout the iron ore value chain, including ore fines, lump, sinter, pellets and coke. It has been successfully used by CSIRO for industrial and research projects and has been independently licensed to several world leaders in iron ore production and ironmaking. The M4/R4 software was strongly integrated with a Zeiss microscope to make use of the company’s powerful AxioVision software. This required users to own both Zeiss microscope hardware and AxioVision software in order to be able to use M4/R4 to its full image acquisition and analysis capacity. Therefore, it was not available to the users of equipment produced by other major microscope manufacturers. In recent times however, Zeiss has indicated that the AxioVision software will no longer be supported. To overcome this limitation, CSIRO has proceeded with the next generation of this software, Mineral5/Recognition5 (M5/R5). Importantly, the M5/R5 system has been developed without any dependence on a specific microscope hardware/software platform. Furthermore, the image analysis functionality is now based on openCV open access software and has been fully rewritten using stateof- the-art software development tools to allow reading and processing of all major image formats. Although past applications have been specific to iron ore and ironmaking applications, other improvements, such as an increased number of minerals allowing better gangue segmentation, flexible mineral definitions, improved software modules behaviour and refined analysis routines enables the platform independent M5/R5 image analysis system to be used by researchers in any area of mineralogical or materials research.

This paper examines the importance of examining the relationship between biology and geochemistry when designing a biopile to treat alkaline soils impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons. At a site in Nevada a large, unlined pit was constructed in a loamy sand soil and filled at regular intervals with a mixture of jet fuel, lubricating oils and waste solvents which were set on fire by the local fire department for training purposes. During its period of operation numerous chemicals were also dumped into the pit for disposal purposes, including dichlorobenzene and various chloroethylenes. As a result of these activities a large groundwater contaminant plume was formed. As a part of the site remediation process a decision was made to perform a limited source removal and excavate the top three to four metres of contaminated soil from the burn pit and place it in an engineered biopile. The location of the training pit is in a heavily mineralised basin where the background sulphate level in groundwater exceeds 5000 ppm. Due to naturally occurring biodegradation of the petroleum hydrocarbons a large portion of the sulphate was converted to sulphide which deposited in the soils as marcasite in the anaerobic soils. The initial attempt at soil remediation was to use a forced air treatment scheme that had worked well in small scale laboratory testing. Unfortunately, when attempted in the field on a large scale, marcasite reacted with atmospheric oxygen resulting in internal biopile temperatures exceeding 90¦C resulting in the virtual sterilisation of the soils without remediation occurring. In order to solve this vexing problem Pintail Systems, Inc developed an anaerobic culture that allowed the pile to be operated under anaerobic conditions. Within three months the biopile successfully demonstrated on a large scale significant biodegradation of the refractory petroleum hydrocarbons.

The subject of my paper is one which, I am certain, has exercised the mind of every man on whom depends the safe and economical conduct of mining operations; particularly in this district where the enormous size of the ore body has necessitated the mine workings assuming a scale that was hitherto unknown in the history of Australian mining. I, therefore, approach the subject with the feeling that I am displaying considerable t.emerity, knowing as I do that the subject has engaged the earnest attention and thought of everybody immediately concerned in the extraction of the ore of this district, and particularly of the Broken Hill lode.I think I shall not be contradicted in asserting that a very large proportion of eur accidents are distinctly traiceable to inexperience on the part of the miner, and records at the mines and verdicts of coroners' juries in many instances uphold this assertion by showing that the accident under notice was the direct result of lack of knowledge of the conditions of the work, or, at any rate, of an error of judgment hardly conceivable in the experienced miner. That this assertion is correct may also be proved by visiting any of the mines of the district.To the experienced eye it will be evident at once that a very large number are not in way skilful in the use of their tools and, therefore, lack the experience which of necessity must be coincident with the acquirement of skill. Now in making this' assertion, I do not intend to be too sweeping...

The Wabu Ridge Gold Skarn deposit is located at elevations of up to 3100 metres above sea level, in the Central Highlands of Irian Jaya, Indonesia, 35 km NNW of the Grasberg porphyry deposit. Wabu is a grass-roots discovery in an area with no previous gold mining history or record of gold mineralisation. A geological resource of 117.26 million tonnes at an average grade of 2.16 g/t Au (1.0 g/t Au cut-off) has been defined to-date. Mineralisation is hosted within a skarn occurring along the southern boundaries of the Late-Miocene age monzonite-diorite Pagane intrusive complex. The intrusive complex occurs in the footwall of a major EW structure, the Derewo fault, which displays sinistral strike-slip and reverse fault movement. The Derewo fault separates Derewo metamorphic units to the north from platform sediments of the Australian craton to the south. The skarn has a strike length of 6 km and is up to 1.5 km wide. It is developed within calcareous shelf sediments of the Tertiary New Guinea limestone group and is dominated by prograde garnet development. Gold mineralisation was deposited during retrograde alteration and is directly associated with arsenophyrite and bismuth minerals. Retrograde alteration is distinguished by a sequence of clinopyroxene , magnetite, epidote and hornblende, biotite and chlorite and lastly carbonate. Gold is associated with the biotite/ chlorite phase together with sulphides and precipitated as the result of fluid mixing. The Wabu Ridge Gold Skarn deposit was identified in April 1990 during a regional program of helicopter assisted stream sediment sampling of -80 mesh (180 microns) fraction and panned concentrate sampling. The initial discovery sample site was situated 15 km down stream from the deposit and returned 1.49 ppm Au for the stream sediment sample and 138 ppm Au for the panned concentrate sample. A regional airborne helicopter magnetics survey, conducted in early-1992, helped defined the main magnetite associated skarn zone and the extent of associated igneous rocks. Detailed follow-up commenced in May 1992 and consisted of detailed mapping, soil sampling and ground magnetics prior to drilling the first hole in October 1992. Drilling to-date has delineated a contained geologic resource of 8.1 million ounces of gold and potential exists for a larger resource.

A very wide range of technologies are utilised in the mining and processing of ores and a great deal of effort is expended in the development of ænew technologiesÆ to improve mining performance and economics. Traditionally, technology and people have been treated as separate aspects of an operation, when in fact they are inextricably linked. The successful implementation of new technologies is entirely dependent upon the actions, enthusiasm and skills of people, both as individuals and working in groups. This paper discusses the role of technology in mining and how new technologies are implemented by the industry. The paper argues that existing technologies have not been fully or adequately utilised and that effort should be re-focussed on the implementation of technologies that have been taken for granted for many years. The need for greater emphasis to be placed on the management of the human-technology interface is discussed.

This paper presents the results of state parameter estimates in an active coal boiler ash storage facility using the most recent methods currently in use for cone penetrometer interpretation. State parameters estimates are also compared with the critical yield stress ratio approach, which is proposed as an additional liquefaction potential screening method. Recommendations are provided regarding additional in situ tests and laboratory tests that may be undertaken to improve the state parameter assessment and data produced for use in subsequent stability or liquefaction studies.

Although cone classifiers have received little attention in the modelling of mineral processing units they are one of the oldest non-mechanical classifiers. Their use has enjoyed a revival in recent years because of their low cost of installation and operation. In this paper the development of models for cone classifiers is reviewed and a new model is proposed. The experimental work, data collection and analysis are briefly described, and the new model is presented and discussed. The data used in the model development are made up from three distinct experiments using different units in each case. There are 21 data sets from a 3 m cone treating the tailings in a copper concentrator, 24 data sets from a 0.3 m pilot-scale cone, and 29 data sets from a laboratory glass funnel (0.(Y73 m diameter) used as a cone classifier, giving a total of 74 data sets. The model structure was developed from an analysis of particle settling in classifiers, using specialised model building software. The size of a particle settling in a separator and the forced flow through the apex of the cone were related via hydrodynamic dimensionless groups to the operating conditions of the unit. The model predicts the separation efficiency using the following four parameters: efficiency curve shape factor, cut-point, underflow density (per cent solids) or underflow pulp velocity. The model covers a range of feed flowrates from 1.2 to 5000 1/min.

The A1 Gold Mine is a Devonian-age narrow vein high-grade gold deposit located 115 km east of Melbourne. The mine operated almost continuously from 1861 to 1992 producing 442 334 ounces of gold (13.8 t) from 530 436 tonnes from primary gold ore tonnes processed at an average recovered grade of 25.9 g/t Au. The A1 dyke was attributed with a yield exceeding 620 000 ounces (19.3 t) of gold (including gold in alluvial and tailings deposits), and was renowned as one of VictoriaÆs premier mines paying considerable dividends. The orebody was principally in a diorite dyke bulge 150 m long, 45 m wide and 700 m deep and was mined via two vertical shafts. The mine site was closed in 1992 and the site was rehabilitated in 1999. In 2008 - 2009, a diamond drilling program identified various extensions to the host dyke lithology and to gold-bearing quartz vein filled fault zones over a 700 m strike length. The outcome of this study was the establishment of a mine geology corridor four times longer in strike length than the original 1970s model. This opens A1 dyke hosted deposit style to exploration outside the historical dyke bulge and provides exploration opportunity for all similar deposits. Construction of the first 3D geological model has developed new insights on the host rock diorite dyke system and identified various extensions to both host stratigraphy and to gold-bearing mineralised structures. Coarse visible gold in quartz vein mineralisation (>30 g/t Au) and medium-grade stockwork mineralisation (8 - 15 g/t Au) has been intersected within 100 m of the surface and up to 300 m along strike of the nearest historical underground workings. At depth it appears that the mineralisation is continuous with the main dyke body with consideration of minor rotation in the strike orientation and limited reverse thrust faulting showing maximum displacement of 10 - 20 m. Along the A1 mine corridor, between two and five parallel dykes are observed at different drill sections. The gold mineralisation is hosted mainly within the dyke rocks, but where the sedimentary rocks are intensely silicified or are xenolith rafts, the gold mineralisation continues across these sedimentary rock blocks. There has been inference to the role of silicified sedimentary rocks as a second ore host and a bounding material for inflections in fault and vein orientations. In the central 150 m long A1 mine dyke bulge, the extremities are demarcated by four to five parallel dyke fingers (referred to as apophyses) going both north and south. These apophyses are clearly observed both vertically and horizontally between levels No 4 and No 9. The dyke fingers entrap sedimentary rock xenoliths and collectively form the A1 dyke æcorridorÆ, which is quite uniform in overall width from the easternmost contact (footwall) to the westernmost contact (hanging wall). Dyke fingers were assumed to coalesce at depth into a single dyke, but recent drilling shows this feature to repeat in several positions with depth and along strike. Key observations are the relationship between gold grade and fracture density, alteration, sulfidation, host rock morphology û relation of contact shape and fault zones. These relationships allow for the classification of prospectivity indicators and geology as a guide to potential extensions of mineralised zones. Mining geology is contributing to the whole-of-mine life planning and development where decline path, stockpile and infrastructure positions are controlled by geology.

In coal flotation, particles of different components of the coal such as maceral groups and mineral matter and their associations have different hydrophobicities and therefore different flotation responses. By using a new coal grain analysis method for characterising individual grains, more detailed flotation performance analysis and modelling approaches have been developed. The method involves the use of microscopic imaging techniques to obtain estimates of size, compositional and density information on individual grains of fine coal. The density and composition partitioning of coal processed through different flotation systems provides an avenue to pinpoint the actual cause of poor process performance so that corrective action may be initiated. The information on grain size, density and composition is being used as input data to develop more detailed flotation process models to provide better predictions of process performance for both mechanical and column flotation devices. A number of approaches may be taken to flotation modelling such as the probability approach and the kinetic model approach or a combination of the two. In the work reported here, a simple probability approach has been taken, which will be further refined in due course. The use of grain data to map the responses of different types of coal grains through various fine coal cleaning processes provided a more advanced diagnostic capability for fine coal cleaning circuits. This enabled flotation performance curves analogous to partition curves for density separators to be produced for flotation devices.

For some underground structures, the use of the plane strain assumption in stress analyses may not be justified. The finite element method and photoelasticity have been used to obtain complete 3-D solutions, but, for various reasons, neither method has found universal use. The boundary integral equation method (B.I.E.M.) can be more efficient and economical than the finite element method for 3-D problems involving large volume to surface area ratios. A B.I.E.M. program developed for calculating stresses and deformations in infinite elastic media has been used to determine the 3-D distributions of stress around T- and Y- junctions of circular tunnels in stress fields in which the ratios of horizontal to vertical stress are 0, 0.33, 1.0 and 2.0. For the T- junction considered,stress concentrations at the intersection are approximately twice the plane strain values. Except where horizontal field stresses are high, the stresses in both tunnels approximate the plane strain values at about two tunnel diameters from the point of intersection of the tunnel centre lines. The stresses in the two branches reach those for the corresponding plane strain, two parallel tunnel case two diameters from the point of intersection of thq inner tunnel walls. Very high stress concentra- tions occur in the pillar of rock between the inner tunnel walls near the point of intersection.

Surface displacements are routinely monitored at multiple points during slope excavation. The monitoring data reveals the safety status of the slope under current loading conditions. They can be used to enhance the prediction of the future performance of the slope by reducing the uncertainties of the prediction model and its model parameters. In a multistage excavation, the observed displacements in the current stage can be used to update the prediction of the displacements in subsequent stages. Besides, due to the spatial correlation of the slope parameters, the prediction of the displacement at one location can also be updated using the monitored displacements at adjacent locations. This study aims to develop a multistep updating method to enhance the prediction of the future performance of the slope using time-series monitoring data at multiple points. This method integrates the theoretical computational model with observational evidence. It considers the inherent uncertainty of the slope, model uncertainty and measurement uncertainty. With more monitoring information being incorporated, the prediction becomes closer to the actual performance of the slope. Incidents that trap miners in underground mines have serious consequences for the miners and the mine operators involved. It is of utmost importance that mine operators utilise all available tools when trying to locate and rescue trapped miners. From testing conducted at underground hard rock mines, Cumming-Potvin et al (2013) found that pre-existing microseismic monitoring systems, which are routinely used for seismic risk management, have the potential to be used for detecting and locating trapped miners.This paper reflects on the Anzac Day seismic event that trapped two miners at Tasmania Mine, Beaconsfield, on 25 April 2006. The Anzac Day event occurred at 2123 on a Tuesday evening. Rescuers were unable to confirm that the trapped miners had survived until 1930 on Sunday evening. It is not possible to speculate on how the rescue operation may have been different had the technology to use the microseismic monitoring system for the purpose of detecting the trapped miners been available. However, it almost certainly would have been different. The recent research project has demonstrated that knowing the fate of the Beaconsfield miners might have been achievable up to 100 hours earlier than was the case in 2006. That knowledge would have been invaluable to the rescue effort.By examining the seismic array at the Tasmania Mine, the reliability of detection over the working levels of the mine could be quantified. Had the methodology been available, adding six additional sensors (at a cost of $40 000), would have been sufficient to increase the likelihood of detection to greater than 90 per cent in the working levels of the mine. The extraction of gold and silver from chalcopyrite concentrates has been investigated. In view of the recent interest in non-cyanide leachants for gold and silver, one such alternative reagent, namely thiourea, has been employed in the present work. Precious metal leaching was attempted from received copper concentrates as well as pre-oxidised concentrates. Pre-oxidation of the concentrates was carried out by three different methods, namely roasting, pressure oxidation and biological oxidation. After pre-oxidation and leaching of the base metals, the leach residues were subjected to further leaching for precious metal extraction. The results obtained on the extraction of gold and silver from received concentrates as well as pre-oxidised concentrates are presented and the effectiveness of the three pre-oxidation routes employed is compared.

The Goldstrike Mine is in Eureka County, Nevada, U.S.A., approximately 23 miles northwest of the town of Carlin. The mine is at the north end of the Tuscarora Spur of the Tuscarora Mountains at elevations of 5,300 feet to 5,950 feet. It is part of the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict of the Carlin Trend, a northwest alignment of sediment hosted, disseminated gold deposits. The Carlin Trend includes over 15 major gold deposits with production, reserves and geological resources of approximately 65 million ounces of gold (Figure 1). In the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict, there are seven major deposits; Betze, Lower Post, Post, Genesis, Bluestar, Purple Vein and Deep Star, plus numerous smaller deposits (Figure 2). Production, reserves and resources for the subdistrict are approximately 40 million ounces. Betze and Purple Vein are located on property controlled by Bamck Goldstrike Mines and Bluestar and Genesis on Newmont Gold property. Post, Lower Post, and Deep Star occur both on Barrick and Newmont Property.

A pilot scale experimental investigation of the condensation of zinc vapour from smelter off-gases was performed in conjunction with a mathematical modelling study of the system. The work investigated the feasibility of using the high heat and mass transfer rates associated with a fluidised bed to condense zinc directly from smelter off-gases containing zinc vapour. Of particular interest was whether zinc would revert to zinc oxide during the process of condensation, and whether a zinc fog would form and be carried out of the condenser. A 0.1 m diameter fluidised bed condenser was mounted on the top of a 200 kVA DC electric arc furnace in which mixtures of vapours and gases were generated at 1150 - 1300¦C. The gas/vapour mixtures investigated included Zn/N2, Zn/N2/CO/CO2 and Zn/N2/H2/H2O. Greater than 90 per cent of the zinc was deposited on the zircon sand bed of the condenser, and there was no sign of zinc oxide formation, suggesting that the rate of heat transfer was faster than the reaction rate for zinc oxide formation. There was also no evidence that fog was being formed in the condenser. Using the methods of Kunii and Levenspeil (1991), a mathematical model was developed to predict the behaviour of the fluidised bed condenser. The model enabled the distribution of gas/vapour temperature and bed temperature to be determined as a function of distance from the condenser inlet. Similarly the partial pressure of zinc vapour in the gas mixture, and hence the mass transfer rate of zinc to the particles, was determined. Experimental data allowed validation of the predicted bed and gas/vapour temperatures.

THE absence of any locality maps of the district of Morobe has been seriously felt by mining engineers engaged on the goldfields, and as it was evident at the beginning of operations that the administration would be unable to make good this deficiency, ascheme for making rapid traverses was worked out, and in all subsequent travelling the necessary records were kept for the construction of a reliable reconnaissance map of the Bulolo goldfield and its approaches (see Plate 1.). Since all the field work had tobe carried out without encroaching on primary duties, the compilation of sufficient data was a somewhat lengthy business. It was found that in this r;ough country a pedometer was useless, as it was impossible to calibrate it for the variation in length ofpace between climbing semi-precipices and walking over level country. Further, the native tracks "meander" so excessively that the only method of calculating air-line distance is by timing, and a knowledge of what the timing represents, and until a 10kg experience had been gained in the time taken to cover known distances in various types of-country, one could not feel competent to estimate sufficiently accurately. It was found that reliability could be attained only when walking at nearly top pace. Inregard to aeroplane traverses, results were reliable only when the air was fairly still.BEARINGSIn arriving at the bearing between main traverse points, the method used was to keep a "boy" about two chains- behind when marching and sight back on him, standing, at about two-chain intervals. It was demonstrated that the stable propagation of the explosive process is possible in low-density emulsion explosives (EEs) obtained through mixing of emulsion with a significant amount of expanded polystyrene (or other similar) granules. Such a process takes place in the form of a detonation-like wave of emulsion drops in explosive gas streams flowing out of the high-pressure area of the reaction zone.Chemical reaction in such EEs takes place in the form of surface combustion of emulsion particles interacting with the gas stream.A method was developed for determining parameters of decomposition of low-density EEs, and it was demonstrated that a gradual pressure increase takes place in products during the explosion of such EEs.The performed analytical research allowed low-density EEs (obtained through mixing of emulsion with a significant amount of expanded polystyrene) to be recommended for smooth blasting.Industrial-experimental blasts at quarries of Ural and Siberia, with extreme positioning of sides and using low-density EEs, have confirmed the viability of the recommendations given.The obtained results are useful in the advancement of smooth blasting technology using low-density EEs.CITATION:Gorinov, S A and Maslov, I Y, 2015. The Obuasi Mine has been in operation for the past 100 years. Within this period a host of mining methods have been employed during its various changing phases. The causes for the changes are multiple, ranging from orebody capability, dynamics, technology, safety, economics, production levels, geotechnical, etc. Mining methods applied have also ranged from timber square setts, conventional cut-and-fill, shrinkage stoping, sublevel caving, mechanised cut-and-fill, longitudinal and transverse open stoping, and lately longitudinal retreat mining method (LRMM).The Obuasi Mine has a world class underground resource potential of about 27 million ounces. A third of this is in reserve. The orebody is subvertical, with multiple lodes and with widths ranging from 1.5 - 40 m. It stretches along 8.5 km N/S strike. A cursory statistical analysis on the various resource ore widths show a higher percentage (60 per cent) of the resource being within the range of about 1.5 - 10 m. Thus a high proportion of the resource is amenable to narrow vein mining methods. This has enhanced the choice of LRMM as an alternative method. Also, with the increasing cost of mining over time, LRMM, which eliminates expensive and time consuming footwall drives, will become far more advantageous as compared to the transverse/longitudinal open stoping methods which currently constitute about 40 per cent of the total underground production.The LRMM currently delivers about 20 per cent of the Obuasi Mine production. Plans are underway to improve total underground production from the current average of 160 000 tpm to about >180 000 tpm in the next few years and about 20 - 40 per cent more in the foreseeable future. Recoverable ounces will also increase from 26 000 to about 34 000 ounces per month. The proportion of LRMM in the business plan is also expected to increase from the current modest level to about 50 per cent. Despite its tremendous advantages in terms of economics and productivity, the method is facing some challenges during its inception. One of the major changes in the resource industry in the nineties has been the re- internationalisation of the industry. The history of the resource business has been one of companies from the developed world utilising the cash flows from their operations to explore and develop mines in less developed regions of the world. This resource development has progressively generated wealth and economic development, which in tum, has led to a new generation of exploration and mining projects.   InSouth America, Chile had led the way in a mining resurgence, now closely followed by Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and Peru. Although Chile has long had a significant copper mining industry, the pre-nationalisation phase was driven by American capital; the current phase has been spearheaded by RTZ - BHP at Escondida with Canadian junior companies, in particular, providing major speculative impetus. The Australian junior companies have not been significant in South America.   Although Canadian and USA exploration appears to be in decline, the mining industry, particularly in gold, is buoyant in North America. Interestingly, a number of listed and unlisted Australian companies are active, particularly in United States exploration.   Australian-based companies have dominated the South-East Asian exploration scene, especially in the Vietnam region. To date, the combination of political and legislative uncertainties have failed to lead to significant resource developments in this region. The area remains one of great potential, as exemplified by the exciting developments in Indonesia.   The Philippines has a history of mining, and this has been dominated by both local and North American operators. Both large and small Australian resource companies have a presence in the Philippines, and the development of the copper-gold potential could be impressive over the next decade.   The tales of the undeveloped mineral potential of China are probably rivalled only by the supposed strings of virgin Russian orebodies! Many Australian companies appear to have looked but few have chosen to proceed with Chinese developments. There seems little likelihood that China will, in the foreseeable future, rival South America as a target for Australian and North American resource capital.   Papua New Guinea has had an active, albeit chequered history in mining, with Australia long being the predominant source of exploration and development funds. The developing nation status of PNG has generated extreme uncertainty, with the current exploration scene all but dead. Most recently, the international flotation of Lihir Gold has tested the international and Australian investment community's commitment to PNG resource development.   The Australian exploration scene continues buoyant, although dominated by gold. The base metals scene is generating, on average, one significant base metal mine developed every couple of years. This is probably the fastest rate of significant base metal development in Australia's history.   The gold scene has been one of incredible dynamics, and there is no evidence that this momentum is waning. The development of new exploration techniques, together with a number of the companies reaching a critical size, has added to the momentum in the industry.
