Indian blast furnaces operate with coke gener- ally containing 24 to 28% ash compared to 10-15% ash in coke in most other parts of the world. The operating problems are further aggravated by the high alumina content and the adverse alumina to silica ratio in the ore. The above factors not only increase the coke rate but, at the same time, increase the flush slag volume, make the bosh slag highly limey and thereby viscous, and produce a flush slag containing 24 to 26% alumina. Relative- ly low flame temperatures (RAFT) make conditions more difficult. The high basicity of the bosh slag limits the maximum flush slag basicity to around 1.0, beyond which the burden movement is adversely affected by the viscosity of the bosh slag: This effect is partly controlled by operating blast furnaces with high MgO in the flush slag (around.10%), which also improves the desulphurizing power of slag. Steps are underway in some plants to inject lime through theòtuyeres to control the bosh slag basicity and also to neutralise the large quantity of silica which is released at the tuyere level from the coke ash, so that the silicon content of the hot metal can also be controlled. High bosh slag basicity coupled with the characteristics of iron ore/aggolmerates, widens the softening-melting zone and alters the shape of the softening-melting zone. This leads to operat- ing difficulties and poor hot metal quality. This paper discusses the above aspects of Indian blast furnace operation and steps being taken to surmount some of the above difficulties.

An important aspect of the project evaluation process is the achievement of a clear and quantitative understanding of the primary drivers influencing project value and risk. A business scenario-based approach is required to ensure that the project meets value and risk hurdles over the short, medium and longer term. Adopting an optimising approach can aid significantly in the development of a project concept into a business that is optimal and sustainable in the longer term. Through the application of case studies, based on work performed with various mining organisations during the last five years, this paper will demonstrate how project value and robustness can be optimised. Experience has demonstrated that applying this approach results in significant value improvements and risk reduction û primarily by application of a rigorous, fact-based analysis and optimisation process that rapidly increases management team understanding and insight of key driver of value and risk.

Located on the island of Mindanao in the Southern Philippines, the Tampakan copper-gold deposit represents a major high-sulfidation epithermal deposit superimposed on an underlying porphyry copper system. With a recent JORC compliant indicated and inferred resource estimate of 1104 million tonnes at 0.65 per cent copper and 0.26 g/t gold at a 0.3 per cent copper cut-off grade, Tampakan represents the largest undeveloped copper-gold deposit in Southeast Asia. Since its acquisition by Indophil ResourcesÆ affiliate Sagittarius Mines Inc in August 2002, the deposit is the subject of an ongoing preliminary feasibility study into project viability that is initially focused on a higher-grade copper zone in the north-central part of the deposit. The deposit is hosted by a sequence of subaerial andesitic flows (Tampakan Andesite Sequence) related to a highly eroded andesitic stratavolcanic complex of Pliocene age. Detailed mapping and geochronological dating has identified four volcanic cycles or centres that have been sequentially developed and eroded. This stratovolcanic complex is interpreted to lie on the northern extension of the Sangihe volcanic arc that extends from Northern Sulawesi in Indonesia. The Tampakan district is located within a complex tectonic setting dominated by WNW trending wrench faults that form part of the trans-Mindanao Cotabato Fault Zone. The Tampakan deposit is located near the intersection of one of several WNW trending splay structures with a prominent NNE trending dilational structure, one of many that transect the host volcanic complex. High-sulfidation style copper-gold mineralisation at Tampakan is broadly associated with and central to a flat-lying tabular body of pervasive silica and silica-clay alteration developed within a district- scale lithocap of advanced-argillic and argillic hydrothermal alteration that extends over an area of 90 km2 within the volcanic complex.

Blast furnace is a countercurrent moving bed reactor that produces pig iron from iron bearing materials like pellet, sinter or lump ore. The furnace has cylindrical shape and the lump solid materials are alternatively charged onto the top of the furnace. Hot air is introduced through tuyeres that are set on the lower furnace wall. Auxiliary fuels (pulverised coal, oil or natural gas) and raw materials (fine ore or fluxes) are injected into the furnace with blast air from the tuyeres. In front of the tuyeres, coke particles react with oxygen in the blast air and generate carbon monoxide. The hot reacting gas heats up the lump solids and reduces iron oxides in the upper furnace. In the middle height of the furnace, the reduced iron and slag are fused by the combustion heat and form the cohesive zone. The molten iron and slag that are generated in this region trickle down through the packed bed of coke particles and flow into the bottom of the furnace. Therefore, the flows of gas, lump solids and liquids exist at the same time in the lower part of the blast furnace.

Metso Minerals Cisa have developed VisiofrothÖ û a system which calculates parameters of the froth surface using vision from remote cameras mounted about individual flotation cells. The parameters calculated from this system can be utilised within process control strategies to achieve stabilisation or optimisation of the flotation process. As part of a JKMRC AMIRA P9 field campaign, froth vision was collected from various cells operated at different air rates and froth depths within Rio TintoÆs Northparkes copper roughing and scavenging circuit. At the same time, samples were collected to determine the cell metallurgical performance at each operating condition. These froth images have been processed using the VisiofrothÖ system with froth velocity, bubble size, froth collapse rate and various froth colour parameters calculated. These parameters have been compared to the measured concentrate flow and concentrate grade produced at each condition. This analysis shows that the concentrate tonnage flow is strongly correlated with froth velocity whereas the concentrate grade is best correlated using froth velocity in combination with a bubble stability parameter which affects the bubble size distribution on the top surface of the froth. This paper summarises the results from this analysis as well as an overview of the VisiofrothÖ system and the parameters that are measured by the software.

Starting from comprehensive programme systems for monitoring tasks of any kind, this paper follows the steps of the programme system hierarchy from top to bottom. The monitoring and control centres for entire production units, the subordinate centres, i.e. district control centres, the microcomputer based autonomous control systems, and data input by mobile terminals are discussed. To an increasing extent, the main emphasis is shifted from monitoring and control of individual machinery to optimized operation of extremely complex comprehensive systems. Network displays, for instance displays of production, transport, supply- and evacuation-networks as well as of safety systems, gain increasing importance. Personnel deployment systemsand planning networks as well as stocktaking and accounting are more and more closely linked with the above-mentioned networks. In order to keep development and application (purchasing) costs low, and to assure compatibility, the use of standard modules is to be assigned particular importance. New module developments are introduced, and the design of standard interfaces for computer and module coupling are discussed.For conclusion, a short view is given on the opinion of the line manage-ments on how future hierarchic systems should be featured in terms of individual units and overall systems, and used.

Fine grinding in an air-swept ball mill working in closed circuit with a forced vortex air classifier has been investigated first in continuous laboratory and then in industrial scale. Results from the laboratory circuit have shown significant influence of mill load (powder filling) on the capacity of the circuit. In laboratory scale the mill load was measured and controlled by a weighing platform placed under the complete mill set-up. The mill load of the industrial air-swept ball mill has till now been controlled by measuring the power consumption of the mill motor. Thus, it was necessary to operate far from the range of optimal mill filling. To improve the circuit performance, alternative ways of mill load measurement were investigated. An important factor was investment cost, as many fine grinding mills operate in relatively small circuits that do not wan-ant large investment. In this case the task was accomplished by using a piezoelectric strain transducer, which detected strain changes in the mill shell. It was installed in the midpoint of the shell, where the highest deformation was obtained. As the transducer was on the top position, it indicated compression, and on the bottom position it measured tension. By taking the difference between the readings, it was possible to calculate total strain variations, directly proportional to the mill load. The signal from the transducer was sent to a control room via a cordless infrared communication system, employing a microprocessor control card, which could further regulate other operating parameters of the circuit according to the software model. The installation required very low investment cost and provided simplicity of application as well as stability and reliability of characteristics under severe industrial condition. The measurement system made it possible to optimise the mill load and thus increase the production from 3.2 to 3.7 dh (15 per cent), and stabilise the circuit operation.

Multiple data sources can be fused to improve boundary modelling in stratified deposits such as the banded iron formation (BIF) hosted deposits in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia. Accurate boundaries are essential to produce high quality geological models. Initial models are based on the widely spaced exploration hole data. This creates a high level of uncertainty in areas between the holes, with different interpretations of the boundary equally probable. Including directional information collected in these holes in the models can reduce the number of possibilities. Including data collected during mining, such as blastholes and bench measurements, can further guide the model. This research demonstrates a Gaussian Processes based method of fusing these disparate data sources to better inform the boundaries. Our results demonstrate that when only exploration points are used the model creates a smooth boundary with minimal variation between the holes. Each additional data source refined the model and added additional detail to the boundary. For the blast data, the new detail projects down to the bench below the current bench to allow for a better prediction before mining commences on that bench.

"The Olympic Dam geometallurgy program has generated a large quantity of data that has been used to create a geometallurgically enabled block model. An ongoing challenge is to convert data into usable information and embed geometallurgical practices into resource model development and mine planning to assist with the identification of opportunities to maximise value.This paper will discuss the methods used to disseminate geometallurgical information throughout the planning life cycle including data extraction methods from the geometallurgy acQuire database, and the inclusion of a geometallurgy module in the Olympic Dam Stope Reserves database. The use of geometallurgical information in short-, medium- and long-term mine design and scheduling, including its use in grade descriptor development and stope value assessment tools will also be presented. GoldcorpÆs Musselwhite mine in north-western Ontario, Canada has in recent years become a world-class deposit. Initially discovered in the early 1960s by Alan and Harold Musselwhite, the then marginal mine eventually started production in 1997 and has to date produced 2.6 Moz of gold. Two million ounces of gold are currently classified as Mineral Reserve and a further 1.2 Moz of gold are classified in the Mineral Resource category for a total gold inventory approaching 6 Moz. Growth of the mineral inventory has been achieved through the successful implementation of strategic planning that sought to extend the mine life through discovery of additional economic zones and increased mined tonnages. Accelerated exploration activity commenced in 2001, at a time when gold price was at its lowest in decades. Focus was placed on building, developing and retaining a highly skilled geological team, maintaining purpose, conducting external reviews and developing a new geological model through research partnerships. Ongoing collaborative research between Lakehead University and Musselwhite mine has seen the development of new structural and geological models through post-graduate and academic studies. Research has included lithogeochemical, stable isotope and structural and metamorphic studies and has led to the evolution of a new mineralisation model (for the mine) and the recognition of brittle and ductile deformation regimes within the mineralised horizons. Exploration drilling continues to provide support for the new geologic model. Gold discoveries have extended known mineralisation 2.3 km along strike from mineral reserves and laterally into parallel zones. The exploration potential to further increase production rates, Mineral Reserves and Resources remains very positive and increases in overall gold inventory are likely. Musselwhite mine has significantly exceeded initial projections for a ten year life-of-mine and a marginal existence.

The aim of this paper is to discuss how to form work and organisations in the mines of the future. The Kiruna underground iron ore mine in the far north of Sweden is used as an example on how technical development affects organisational issues like skills, work identity and gender. Over a period of 50 years one can see a transformation of work from manual underground work to automation and remote control from surface level. What characterised the old underground workface was the close relation between man and the hard rock and with arduous physical work under dangerous conditions. Today, the face miners are located on the seventh level of an office building close to the mine. There is also an emerging, and in many aspects already evident, knowledge transformation û from the old and obsolete physical and tacit knowledge and skills (for example the ability to æread the rockÆ) to something new, which can be described as abstract æhigh-techÆ knowledge and skills. The modern technology has created a new type of work û new in terms of competencies and knowledge as well as workload and organisation. At the same time the mining company are recruiting more women and promoting the former pure male work as attractive workplaces for both women and men. All this has effects on how individuals and company create and recreate skills, identity and gender. To some extent the technological development predestines these changes, but there are some choices to be done when forming good work and organisations for the mines of the future. The traditional mining workplace culture and behaviours and the old type of masculinity, the æmachoÆ style, will be challenged by the new æhigh-techÆ work and new competency demands. The changes risk meeting restoring responses, which can have negative impact on the performance of the organisation, for example making it inflexible and perhaps ælaggingÆ behind the technological development. These questions need to be handled when planning future mining.

This paper discusses cone penetration test correlations for loose gold tailings that were developed within a critical state soil mechanics framework. The development of a new calibration chamber for cone penetration testing that consists of a modified triaxial cell is described. Some of the early development and commissioning issues that were encountered, as well as the solutions adopted are outlined, including the system to prepare the samples and to acquire high-quality data from the testing. Also, the triaxial laboratory testing required to achieve the critical state line is described, including some of the basic precautions considered necessary as good practice. Additionally, the system adopted for volume tracking of the calibration chamber sample is described, which is essential for ensuring a reliable state parameter comparison against the acquired cone penetration test data. Finally, some laboratory test data from the calibration chamber is plotted against the soil behaviour type charts currently available from various authors.

Ranger Uranium Mines (RUM) operates an open cut located in the Top End of the North- ern Territory. Strict environmental controls govern all operations and the water management requirements have the greatest impact on mine planning. The two main goals of planning are to provide mill feed and to mine sufficient suitable quality waste rock for ongoing con- struction of the tailings dam. Early planning concentrated on staged development of the pit to provide access to as much ore as possible for a given amount of development. All waste was considered to be suitable construction material. Grade control of crusher feed was the main problem in planning, as wide vari- ations occur in ore grade over relatively short distances. Water management for the site ope- rates a no release' system for contaminated waters. Design storage has proven inadequate, and the open cut has been used as the extra storage. As construction of future stages of the tailings dam requires non-mineralised rock materials which meet specific quality criteria, the mine has had to re-examine long term plan- ning and pit development strategies. This has entailed the collection of much data not re- quired under normal mining conditions, such as the assaying of waste drill core. The overall impact on mine planning of the environmental regulations has been to alter the philosophy of earlier planning, making it necessary to create a new strategy for pit development with

The Lihir gold operation, located in the New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG), approximately 900 km north of Port Moresby, was commissioned in 1997 under the management of the Lihir Management Company, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto. This management period ended in 2005 with Lihir Gold Limited (LGL) becoming self-managed. LGL is now the largest listed company in PNG and a top tier mining company in Australia. The focus of the operation since 2005 has been to take advantage of strong market conditions to increase cash flow while driving operating costs into the lowest quartile of gold producers. During this period production has increased through capital expansions, most notably with the addition of a flotation circuit, and through culture change and efficiency improvements. The next step forward for the Lihir operation is a major plant upgrade to increase production to an average of around one million ounces per annum by matching the ore processing rate to the ore mining rate. The key benefits of this project will be the addition of approximately 240 000 ounces per annum of gold production, the access to an additional one million ounces of gold and the ability to meet all stockpiling requirements. The Lihir operation has come out of the boom period in a strong position, is undertaking a major upgrade at a time when prices are low and labour is available, and will be positioned to take advantage of future opportunities as they arise.

Theories on the origin of the Itabira iron formation (itabirite) in Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF), as elsewhere in the world, are restricted by the apparent lack of adjoining volcanic units, severe syndeformational metamorphism and deep weathering. Besides the three types of iron formations at QF (siliceous, dolomitic and amphibolitic; Dorr, 1969) we include a fourth type initially described as ocherous, goethitic, limonitic or even yellow iron formation. Considering its high magnetite content, it has been described as yellow magnetite itabirite (Pires, 1979). It was reported as formed by the alteration of the dolomitic itabirite (Dorr, 1969) although the anomalous Al2O3 contents are high for normal weathered itabirite. The yellowish magnetitic itabirite occurs at the bottom of the Itabira Iron formation, along the contact with the Batatal schists, and at the top units of the Itabira, within the Gandarela Formation. Within the magnetitic itabirite at the Tamanduß iron ore mine there are metric zones, concordant to the bedding of pillow-like structures, exhibiting a porous core, surrounded by an intermediate, more granular zone with numerous, minute rounded cavities grading to an external, fine-grained zone with much less minute cavities. In the external portions of some pillows a breadcrust type structure, derived by quenching with the water can be observed. In some other zones, such as the Barreiro hill, an outer, vesicular, whitish yellow, 5 - 10 mm thick, band grades to an aphanitic, isotropic band. The vesicles are slightly flattened against the band surfaces. The existence of fragmental layers showing flowage and fragment alignment, kaolinitic laminas and vesicles filled with kaolinite at Barreiro Hill and Capitpo do Mato Mine represent mesoscopic structures, indicators of a possible volcanic origin. Chemical compositions of the magnetitic itabirite from a wide area in QF revealed a relatively high Al2O3 content, consistent with a volcanic origin.

The Kyaukpahto gold deposit is located at latitude 23¦ 47Æ 55" N and longitude 95¦ 56Æ 35" E in the Kawlin-Wuntho district, Sagaing Division, Myanmar. Gold mineralisation is hosted in sandstone of the Male Formation (Eocene) and occurs as stockworks and disseminations. The high-grade gold mineralisation is locally concentrated in a breccia zone. The gold deposit is closely associated with a NNE-SSW trending fracture system that forms tensional open fractures. These tensional zones are thought to be directly related to the Sagiang transfer fault system that experienced several hundred kilometres of northward dextral movement during the post-Upper Miocene. Major sulfide minerals are pyrite and arsenopyrite with minor galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Gold mineralisation is associated with intense silicification, sericitisation and argillic alteration. Primary Type I fluid inclusions in the quartz from the mineralised zone are 5 to 15 ¦m across and yield homogenisation temperatures of 239¦ - 310¦C and salinities of 1.2 - 10.9 wt per cent NaCl equivalent. Laser Raman spectroscopic analysis indicates the presence of CO2 and CH4 in Type II fluid inclusions. Sulfur isotope analysis of disseminated pyrite in the ore zone by the laser ablation method indicates d34S values from -5.48ë to +5.53ë. The geology, alteration, ore mineralogy, fluid inclusion microthermometry and sulfur isotope data of the Kyaukpahto deposit are consistent with an epithermal ore deposit model for the deposit. However, the presence of CO2-liquid bearing fluids and the detectable CH4 in the gaseous phase of the fluid inclusions conflict with a typical epithermal origin for the Kyaukpahto deposit. The host siltstone and mudstone sequence, trace element geochemistry, and the disseminated nature of sulfide and gold mineralisation are also common characteristics of a sedimentary rock-hosted gold deposit, and these features may indicate a Carlin-like affinity. IndiaÆs iron ore mining industry is growing rapidly in order to augment the capacity to meet the unprecedented demand for the iron ore. Traditionally, much of Indian iron ore production came from exploitation of high-grade haematite ores, with the exception of Kudremukh which beneficiates lean grade Banded Magnetite Quartz ore. Now with the changed scenario of demand and supply, keeping long term sustainability in mind, it is imperative to develop suitable processing technology for exploitation of banded haematite quartz (BHQ) ore available abundantly and not utilised so far. In this direction detailed characterisation and beneficiation studies were conducted with BHQ iron ore from the Bellary-Hospet region of India, assaying 36.5 per cent Fe. The mineralogical studies with the image analyser system revealed the presence of maghemite and haematite as iron-bearing minerals. The gangue mineral associations were siliceous, ferro-magnesian and carbonate minerals. Higher degrees of liberation were observed in the size range of 75 - 212 microns. Liberation grind tests were performed by grinding the ore to different top sizes in a closed circuit laboratory ball mill with the ground samples subjected to Davis tube tests. The yield, grade and recovery were used as parameters to plan a two-stage wet drum magnetic separation based on grinding the primary magnetic concentrate. After subjecting the final magnetic concentrate to flotation to remove residual silica a concentrate assaying more than 68 per cent was obtained. The non-magnetic product from the primary magnetic separation was deslimed, ground, blended with secondary magnetic tails and was subjected to a two pass wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS). The WHIMS concentrate was further subjected to two-stage flotation to remove residual silica to obtain concentrates assaying 64 - 66 per cent Fe. The final combined concentrate from wet drum magnet and WHIMS after flotation could yield a blast furnace (BF) grade pellet feed concentrate assaying more than 65 per cent Fe with a yield about 39 per cent and iron recovery about 70 per cent. A direct reduction (DR) grade pellet feed concentrate assaying 67 per cent Fe with a yield of about 28 - 31 per cent and iron recovery about 53 - 57 per cent could also be produced. Based on the test work, a process flow sheet was developed to beneficiate the BHQ ore for production of BF/DR grade pellet feed concentrate. In this paper methodology adopted for selection of individual process, various diagnostic tests performed to rule out other beneficiation processes and the final process flow sheet development is presented and discussed in detail.

A pillar 'is a block of coal left in the first working of a coal seam for the purpose of supporting the superincumbent strata in such a manner that the winning out roadways will be safe to traverse by men and by the coal transport system.PRINCIPLES OF PILLAR EXTRACTION.The size of a pillar is chiefly dependent on the depth of cover, and in a lesser degree on the nature of the coal, or the condition in which the seam has been laid down. In a seam at 1,100ft. depth of cover, and assuming a spec'ific gravity of 2.5 overall for the cover strata, a pressure of 1,200lb. per sq. in. is the loading on the top surface of the coal seam before mining begins.When mining commences, and as the pillars are formed, an increased load is imposed on the coal left in the pillars, according to the percentage of coal extracted in the first working. Thus, if 25% extraction is taken in the first working, the load on the pillars is theoretically increased from 1,200lb. per sq. in. to 1,600lb. per sq. in. over the area mined. If this state of things went on indefinitely it would not be possible wholly to extract a pillar because of the extreme pressure tliat would be thrown on the diminishing portion; but, fortunately, another element, that of time, enters into and assists the process of extraction.If the superimposed strata were of an entirely plastic nature, this time factor could not operate, as the cover weight would settle instantly on the remaining portion of the p'illar and finally overwhelm it. The cover strata above a pillar generally have a certain rigidity which does not allow the superimposed weight to settle instantly on the pillar fraction, and it requires a period of time to elapse before the extra weight is felt by the pillar.The time factor varies widely, and is governed entirely by local conditions; it can only be determined by experience gained on the spot or in close proximity to the area of operations. It is dependent on the strength of the strata and its characteristics under bridging conditions.It is, therefore, logical to assume that the more rapidly a pillar can be extracted the greater will be the safety factor and also the percentage of recovery of coal.Up to the present time, the operation of the extraction of pillars in this country has been, with a few exceptions, a manual one, and before mechanization of Collieries can be fully accomplished, the process will have to be performed mecharrically.

Coal slurry pumping was introduced into the U.K. in 1973. Gateside packs were prepared in areas of containment using R.O.M. coal and a special fast setting cement. The packs restricted roadway convergence and moderated spontaneous combustion risks, but costs were high and alternptives were sought. A similar system using OPC and an accelerator had limited success. Much more successful was the Aquapack process which used dilute slurries of a special OPC based cement and an accelerator based on sodium carbonate and bentonite pumped simultaneously into la fabric packbag. The Tekpak system using HAC and a much modified calcium sulphate mixture superceded Aquapack on the grounds of improved cement pumping life lower alkalinity and lower costs. The implementation of a process information management system (PIMS) is to provide a single online, real-time information system. This system provides a unique and completely open view for everyone, based on the key business drivers. It is structured around the three key concepts: process, maintenance and stocks. It combines numerous applications and provides accessibility to common tools and reports, through a web-based user interface, for every one from the floor operator to the General Manager. This æunique and commonÆ view displays raw, online process information that provides a quick health check of the operation at a glance, highlighting areas that require further investigation. The system is based on a hierarchical system of views, from the overview of the whole plant flow sheet to the more detailed operational shop view. It provides a synthetic view between continuous and batch operations, enabling the tracking of each batch produced. The batch view displays the critical batch components, and a comparison with each component of an ideal batch. This enables detailed analysis of each batch to identify areas of improvement. The information system will consist of an online reconciliation of stocks and flow data. This enables focus on the recovery of each process unit on a regular basis. This paper discusses the design strategy for the Process Information Management System, to ensure a unique and open view on the key business drivers is achieved and implemented successfully.
