The Beta Hunt orebody is situated on the south western limb of the Kambalda dome. It is one of the nickel occurrences in the area which fall into the category of æKambalda Style OrebodiesÆ. These orebodies are renowned as being continuous uniformly mineralised ribbons of nickel sulfide mineralisation. Interestingly, Beta Hunt does not conform to this notion of continuity and uniformity and is in fact highly irregular in its ore distribution due largely to the influence of post depositional structure. In an attempt to understand the ore distribution at delineation stage rather than development stage a detailed footwall topography model is created using all available drilling data. To augment this drilling data, the routine use of downhole EM and borehole radar has been introduced to provide data beyond the confines of the drill core to enhance the geological interpretation of the footwall topography and the distribution of the mineralisation. The implementation of a detailed footwall model and the use of downhole geophysics has proved to be very effective in resolving the orebody complexity issues. Ongoing development of the methods used will continue to refine the interpretation of the geology to enable more efficient extraction of the orebody.

With their commitment to sustainable development in an increasingly carbon-constrained world, many resources companies are focused on reducing the energy required to create their final products. In particular, the comminution and smelting of metal-bearing ores are both highly energy-intensive processes. If resource companies can optimise the energy efficiency across these two processing stages, they can directly reduce their overall energy consumption per unit mass of metal produced and thus reduce their greenhouse gas footprint. Traditional grinding and flotation models seek to improve the efficiency of mineral processing, but they do not consider the energy used by downstream metal production, eg smelting and refining. Concentrators and smelters individually may be running efficiently, but are they optimising energy consumption of the overall system? A key step towards answering this question is to understand whether it takes less energy to remove an impurity in the concentrator or the smelter. Analysis of the complete concentrator û smelter process chain may show that there are times when the concentrator should use more energy to reduce the overall energy requirements across the mill and smelter. The new methodology discussed here will integrate downstream processing energy with mineral processing energy, to find the overall most energy efficient circuit design and operating strategy. The proposed methodology includes: determining what grade and recovery positions can be achieved in the concentrator by using different combinations and amounts of grinding and regrinding, thermodynamic calculations of the energy used to process the different concentrate grades to metal, and integrating the concentrating and smelting models to find the lowest total energy for the system. A case study which investigates the effect of increasing regrinding energy on the overall mineral processing û smelting energy consumption is presented. For the copper-nickel sulfide ore investigated the addition of regrinding results in 11 per cent less energy being used in the overall concentrator û smelter process chain per tonne of metal produced. Although regrinding is often seen as an energy-intensive process, in this case study the use of 1 kWh of energy for regrinding reduces the overall energy consumption by 12 kWh. The new mill to melt methodology will allow companies to model energy consumption from mill to smelter with a view to reducing the energy-intensity and greenhouse gas footprint of their processing and smelting operations.

This paper discusses characterisation techniques that can be applied to complex waste products from metal production and processing operations with the aim of devising treatment methods for upgrading the metal content for recycling. Two waste streams were selected to illustrate the role of characterisation in adapting mineral processing techniques to provide an effective recycling strategy. Waste products chosen were:aluminium dross, which contains metallic aluminium particles in a coarse matrix of many components; and steel shredder sludge that contains copper wire and other metallics in a matrix of plastic and natural fibres, iron oxides, metallic iron, and other compounds. Characterisation methods discussed include chemical analysis (XRF, ICP-AES, and selected specialised techniques), phase analysis (XRD, SEM, TEM, and optical microscopy), morphology (IFESEM), sizing analysis (screening, Cyclosizing, Infrasizing, Malvern sizing), and general techniques such as particle shape, surface area, and porosity determinations. The applicability of these techniques to the waste products is considered in relation to their advantages and disadvantages, and sampling issues.Treatment techniques considered for the two waste products included comminution, screening, air or water classification, simple water leaching, gravity separation, magnetic separation, flotation, and eddy current separation.Tentative flow sheets were developed for the two wastes. For aluminium dross, it was proposed to use fine crushing followed by water washing to remove soluble chlorides and aluminium nitride, and then desliming followed by flotation of the granular fraction to give a metallic aluminium-rich concentrate. For shredder sludge, it was proposed to use wet screening, water classification, and gravity concentration to produce a copper-rich product and magnetic separation to produce a metallic iron-rich product.

Large scale open pit mining at Ok Tedi and Misima are described in this paper. The paper also presents the socio-political problems encountered in the construction, operation and waste disposal of high technology, high output gold and copper mines in very remote and rugged terrains. Despite these handicaps, mining companies from all over the world have established top class mining facilities including huge open pits, underground mines and mineral processing plants to extract rich mineral deposits of gold, silver and copper.Papua New Guinea is the sixth largest gold and copper producer in the world. New projects likely to come on stream before the end of this century would make it the world's third largest gold producer. The mining industry is the largest organised industry in the country employing over 10 000 persons and investing over US $1000 million on these mega projects per year.

Blast performance and the resulting drawpoint condition and volume of oversize has the potential to impact operator safety and mine productivity. Underground measurements showed that approximately 14 per cent of production rings in the Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) sublevel caving (SLC) operation had either overbreak in the brow or left collars. There were also oversize rocks reporting to approximately 30 per cent of drawpoints, which accounted for over 7 per cent of total production and significantly impacted production rates. A series of trials were conducted in 2015–2016 at EHM to test changes to certain charge parameters in an attempt to optimise blasting results and, in particular, reduce oversize and overbreak. The detailed analysis conducted included field observations, hole surveying, blast monitor analysis and blast modelling. There were a total of nine charge parameters tested in the project, which fell into two major categories: energy distribution and inter-hole delay. These were based on observations made in establishing baseline data and those parameters most likely to have a significant impact on overbreak and oversize.Key results from the project included oversize reduction and improved brow conditions when energy distribution was reduced through changing charge lengths in certain holes in the standard charge plan. Similar benefits were also seen when the inter-hole delay between blastholes was reduced from 50 ms to 25 ms. Based on these results both changes were made to the standard production ring charge plan at EHM.Moving forward, the aim is to continue monitoring the results from the changes made on all levels to ensure efficiencies are being realised and sustained. A 3 per cent improvement in oversize as a percentage of total tonnes and improved brow conditions not only has a positive impact on production rates, but removes people from any potentially hazardous situations and contributes to a safer working environment.CITATION:te Kloot, C and Liu, Z, 2017. The United States Steel Mining Co., Inc. recently experienced a major mine fire at the Cumberland Mine. This mine is located in Greene County, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. and is mining a high volatile bituminous coal seam (Pittsburgh Seam). The mine fire was success- fully controlled and extinguished without loss of life or serious injury to any miner or mine rescue personnel and finally reopened within 40 days of its inception.

Partitioning behaviour studies for -particles in the 250 to 1,000 micron size range at. the Curragh coal preparation plant are presented. Plant surveys were conducted to compare the partitioning efficiencies of dense medium cyclones and froth flotation. The aim was to assess the potential for improving yield of coal by directing more of the top size of flotation feed material to dense medium cyclones. ovel mass balancing and model fitting NI procedures were used. While flotation offers high yield of low ash particles smaller than 500 microns, dense medium cyclone rejection .of high ash particles larger than 250 microns is superior. These strengths of the two processes are turned to good advantage by the use or desliming sieve bends which tend to perform some density separation on the'size fractions of interest, directing lower ash material to froth flotation than to the dense medium cyclones.

The effects of changes in sintering bed height, coke fuel, suction and basicity on sinter productivity, physical strength and mineralogy were determined. It was found that, for a given iron ore, there is a narrow -coke range which maximises sinter strength, irrespective of bed height (in the range 300 to 500 mm) or basicity (in the range 1.2 to 2.2). Increases in bed height, at a constant coke level, improved the physical strength of the sinter. Productivity increases were obtained by increasing the sintering suction but, at coke levels other than the optimum, these *ere somewhat offset by the decrease in sinter physical strength. At basicities higher than 1.2 (i.e. 1.6, 1.8 and 2.2) there was a narrowing of'the size range of product sinter, with a decrease in the percentage of top size material, and a decrease in the amount of fines produced. Changes in coke, bed height and basicity exert major effects on sinter mineralogy, while the Nagoya index was mainly influenced by cote and bed height Changes.

The paper describes the development and analysis of an instability database to establish a new method of slope stability assessment for U.K. surface coal mines. The concept is based upon a Stability Index, which relates to the probability of failure of a slope. This forms the basis for a geotechnical planning software package to be incorporated into a computer aided mine design system , which is currently under development.

The sinter plant at the Sulphide Corporation's Cockle Creek works produces a feed for the company's Imperial Smelting Furnace. The feed contains lead and zinc oxides and all the fluxes necessary for furnace operation. The quality of this feed is a major factor in furnace performance and the considerable flexibility of operation possible at the sinter plant has been used in efforts to achieve optimum operating conditions.Operating data is processed daily and information gathered from this source has led to three of the four improvements described.These improvements have resulted from elimination of gas recirculation, reduction of sinter returns sizing and alteration of ignition conditions and main layer fuel loading.

The Cambrian structure in the Mt Read Volcanics was produced by four deformational events: obduction of forearc-derived mafic/ultramalic complexes in the early Middle Cambrian, a middle Middle Cambrian extensional phase related to the post-collisional Mt Read volcanism and VHMS mineralisation, Middle Cambrian E-W folding, and Late Cambrian N-S folding and basin inversion. The major phase of VHMS mineralisation in western Tasmania is restricted to the very brief period of extensional tectonics within the middle Middle Cambrian. Within this period a N-S graben was produced with a complex series of transfer zones, largely striking E-W. Most VHMS mineralisation is restricted to the top of massive volcanic successions, with several mines close to Cambrian transfer structures. Many of the transfer structures continued to be active until the Devonian. The later compressional Cambrian events are not significant in localising orc formation. Within the Rosebery mine a complex pattern of minor Cambrian normal faults has a second order control on the distribution of the mineralisation.

WMC Fertilizers (WMCF) operates a Beneficiation Plant at Phosphate Hill in Queensland, Australia. The plant consists of two-stages of crushing, followed by a wet scrubbing and desliming circuit. Ore is then fed to a tertiary crusher and a milling/classification circuit, with the final product going to a swing-lift thickener and storage tanks. From the slurry storage tanks, the phosphate rock is fed to a horizontal belt filters which dewater the phosphate rock ahead of a hemi-hydrate phosphoric acid plant. The water soluble recovery of phosphate in the phosphoric acid plant is dependent on the moisture content in the filter cake, as this governs the wash water addition to the hemi-hydrate filters. Since commencement of operation, the moisture content of the filter cake fed to the phosphoric acid plant has been higher than design reducing the phosphoric acid plant recovery and at times reducing the throughput through the phosphoric acid plant. The moisture content in the filter cake can be decreased by reducing the generation of fines in the milling and classification circuit (classified as û38 micron material). This paper identifies the causes of fines generation in the Phosphate Hill beneficiation plant. It discusses the options that were assessed to minimise fines generation, and outlines the results to date of circuit changes undertaken at Phosphate Hill.

The operation of cyclones and cylinders is briefly described and com- pared, and a number of recent applications in mineral, gold and coal plants discussed. The capacity of an existing pump and cyclone in a circuit can be sig- nificantly increased by retrofitting a cylinder in series to predensify the cyclone feed. The cyclone overflow product size can also be adjusted and controlled using a variable aperture valve between the cylinder and the cyclone. This predensifier-cyclone system has been used at plant scale to con- trol the pulp density of the feed to cyanidation in gold plants, to size flotation feeds before split conditioning and to deslime and classify in gravity plants. Application in a typical regrind circuit is considered. Cylinders and cyclones also have numerous applications in water management systems, e.g., degritting mine and plant waters to protect pumps, sprays and other equipment. Screen undersize and flotation con- centrate dewatering circuits are described to illustrate how suitable stream recycles can reduce water consumption, optimize fresh water use and improve efficiency.

In cut-and-break rock excavation use is made of the fact that breaking rock in tension towards a free face requires a specific energy of excavation which is small in comparison with that required for rock excavation using conventional tools operating by a process of indentation of the rock.The process of cut-and-break excavation comprises firstly a cutting step in which a groove is cut into the rock surface, followed by a breaking phase in which a tool is inserted into the cut in order to break the rock adjacent to the cut.

Active explosion barriers are used to contain and suppress a methane gas and/or coal dust explosion propagation, including localised mine fires. Early research indicated that these active explosion barriers could be used on a mechanised cutting machine, making it the only technology that could suppress an explosion during its propagation phase at the cutting face. Thereby not only adding protection during mining operations but also reducing the development of toxic gases, fatal temperature increase and fatal overpressure build-up. During their evolution over the last two decades, further advantages of Active explosion barriers were proven in mine operations in countries such as South Africa and China. Characteristics such as effectivity, efficiency, mobility and space restrictions allow these systems to be used in various locations within a mine operation, including highwall operations. This improved technology contribution to safer coal mining was recognised by mine operators, workers and regulators. The Queensland’s Recognised Standard 21 (Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ), 2021) stipulated active explosion barriers as a technology to ensure the safety within their underground coalmines. The mobility and flexible implementation of the active explosion barriers allow a feasible and practical solution for all critical locations for explosion and fire management in an underground coalmine. The conformance to the Recognised Standard can be achieved all underground coal mining operations such as Bord and Pillar, and Longwall mining. This paper describes the conformance, implementation and use of Active explosion barriers for Longwall mining and development as well as Bord and Pillar mining in Queensland’s underground coalmines.

Three selected iron ore samples from the major bedded and channel iron deposits of Western Australia were analysed using a scratch test commonly used in the oil and gas industry. The portable commercial equipment dubbed Wombat cuts a groove on the surface of the sample with a cutter under imposed depth of cut and cutting velocity. The normal and tangential components of the force acting on the cutter are recorded with a high degree of precision (about 1N) at fine spatial resolution of about 20 measurements per millimeter.The intrinsic specific energy inferred from the scratch test measurements is found very well correlated with a classical measure of strength such as the uniaxial compressive strength, for over 300 sedimentary rock samples.The results obtained on the iron ore samples are comparable to those obtained on oil and gas sedimentary rocks. This method could provide an objective and semi-automated measurement of material strength and brittleness in iron ores that can possibly be correlated to the lump to fines ratio.

A ‘Variable Blend and Rates’ model is developed for SAG mills which extends upon the JKSimMet® Variable Rates Model. Similarly, a ‘Variable Blend Residence Constrained Perfect Mixing’ Ball Mill model is also introduced, also extending upon the existing JKSimMet® model. These models are used in conjunction with JKSimMet® while employing external technical programs. The technical model is then used to inform an economic model described elsewhere in Hanhiniemi and Powell (2022), which calculate operating and unit costs based on operating conditions, design, and ore characterisation. The SAG and ball mill models include constraints beyond those in the JKSimMet® models. The SAG model constraints include Size Specific Energy (SSE) verification, charge weight limit, and assessment of the impact of media to ore composition in the charge using the SAG Charge SSE Model developed in this paper. The ball mill model includes residence time, volumetric capacity, and SSE verification constraints. These models are applied to Cortez Gold Mine in the processing of two very different ore types and their blends; ‘Horse Canyon’ which is softer in coarser sizes and competent is fine sizes, and ‘Wenban’ which is competent at coarser sizes but softer in fine sizes than Horse Canyon. Horse Canyon also has a finer run-of-mine size distribution then Wenban. The application of the model at this site included undertaking five surveys at varying blends. The behaviours of the blends and individual components is then studied in the SABC circuit. A nonlinearity is observed with throughputs increasing with blending. The newly developed modelling approach captures these responses. Controlled blending based on ore competence-by-size and size distribution was implemented by the site, which then realised significant improvements in throughput without any capital cost (Ntiamoah et al, 2020). The modelling developed in this paper is then compared to existing practice, and the new method was found to provide improved fidelity and utility. A three-dimensional surface is then developed using the model describing the SAG mill throughput capacity at varying conditions (speed-filling) versus varying blend. The change in throughput as a function of only the changing charge composition is presented. The result is nonlinear, and explanations are provided to describe this behaviour.

The efficient operation of large haul trucks in large open pit mines requires an economic trade off between the haul route quality, the haul truck payloads and the level of haul truck reliability. This paper describes an investigation into the relation- ship between haul route surface quality and the level of structural reliability of a haul truck main frame. An instrumentation system for unattended recording of data on a haul truck operating normally in a mine and com- puter based analytical procedures were developed and used to identify which road segments contribute significantly to fatigue cracking at various sections of a haul truck main frame. INTRODUCTION In many open pit mines there is exten- sive use of large haul trucks to move over- burden and minerals. In most open pit hard rock mines, both the overburden and mineral ore are moved by large rear dump type haul trucks. Mining companies have recognised that characterisation of particle breakage plays an essential role in the design and optimisation of comminution circuits. Recently the JKMRC comminution research team has developed a new breakage model incorporating the effect of particle size, and a new breakage characterisation testing device, called the JK Rotary Breakage Tester (JKRBT), which allows rapid testing of particle breakage under high energy single impact and low energy repetitive impact conditions. The latter is believed to be the dominant breakage mechanism in AG/SAG mills. Existing devices, such as the JKMRC Drop Weight Tester, are not suitable for performing repetitive impacts since they are too time consuming. Positive feedback received from mining company sponsors to the new technology has prompted the JKMRC to further validate the device and the model through a formalised experimental test program on professionally designed and manufactured JKRBT machines. The first JKRBT was installed at the Anglo Research laboratory in Johannesburg in March 2007 and four more major mining companies will participate in the project in 2008, with commercial release expected in early 2009. The JKRBT has the potential to revolutionise ore testing, with applications in laboratory impact breakage characterisation of rock samples, drill cores, coal and other materials. It also stands poised to significantly advance the process control of comminution circuits since it is readily adaptable to on-line ore hardness measurement.
