The operation of flotation plants has been improved over the years by use of fundamentally based design techniques, a better understanding of reagent chemistry, online metal analysis and the use of digital control systems. However, optimal operation of flotation banks is not consistently achieved using manual operation. The reason for this is that the system is a highly interacting one, with changes in air addition, cell interface level and reagent dosages all being available, without it necessarily being clear as to which change should be made for a particular situation.This situation is made more complex by the fact that the feed to a flotation bank can vary in flowrate, composition and density over a fairly short period of time. It is not possible for a human operator to reject these disturbances, given the extent of the operation that is typically being monitored.Model predictive control (MPC) is a control and optimisation technique, developed in the oil refining industry, that aims to manage just such interacting multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. This technology makes use of linear dynamic models of the plant, that are experimentally derived. These models are then used in a receding horizon strategy to determine an optimal trajectory of the inputs to the system.MPC has been applied to four areas of the lead zinc flotation unit at Mount Isa mines. A total of 31 cells are being controlled by the system, which varies air to the cells, levels and reagent addition on a minute-by minute basis. The MPC controls concentrate and tail grades, reagent dosages, as well as recoveries to ranges set by the plant metallurgists.The development of the MPCs is discussed, together with the benefits realised. Following civil war in Sierra Leone, London Mining Plc obtained the mining license in 2006 and commenced activity to redevelop the Marampa mining and processing operations. The Sierra Leone Marampa mine is a brownfield development effort, having been operated by a few companies since the 1930s until low iron ore prices forced closure. Peak production of the preceding operations was approximately 2.5 Mt/a in the 1960s. There are two virgin ore deposits of interest for development as well as a resource comprised of tailings accumulated from previous operations. The Marampa tailings operation (Phase 1a) is being implemented first with a 1.8 Mt/a plant producing 66 per cent Fe sinter feed, expandable to 3.6 Mt/a in a Phase 1b. The first phase is currently under construction with start-up expected in the third quarter of 2011. Further expansion (Phase 2) that includes the development of the virgin deposits is currently under prefeasibility study and targets a final 16 Mt/a concentrate production. Outotec partnered with London Mining to develop the magnetic separation flow sheet using SLon VPHGMS machines to process the Marampa tailings (haematite) material. The flow sheet development process started with sample characterisation and detailed parametric investigations to evaluate SLon performance. The final flow sheet configuration, including expected circuit recoveries and concentrate quality, demonstrates the performance of the SLon VPHGMS circuit for iron ore tailings.

THIS excellent volumetric method commends itself as a means of estimating the fineness of silver firstly, owing to the large number of possible impurities which do not affect its accuracy (these impurities include Cu-up to 70 % Au, Ph, Zn, Bi, Cd, Fe, Mn, Sb, and As); secondly, the method combines accuracy with speed. The above impurities are the only ones likely to be present in the B. H. A. S. Pty. Ltd. refined silver, and, with the exception of Cu and Au, the others, if present at all, would be well under 0.1 parts per 1000.Briefly stated, the method consists in the solution of the refined silver in HN03 , addition of ferric alum (indicator), and titration with an alkaline (either ammonium or potassium) thiocyanate solution until the brown ferric thiocyanate is formed, and gives a definite tint to the solution. The method is used at the Port Pirie smelters, and the outstanding feature in the method as there applied is the type of burette employed. This burette enables the operator to read 0.01 of a cc. with ease, whereas, with the ordinary burette fitted with a float, 0.05 of a cc., when a number of readings have to be taken, becomes very straining to the eyes. Moreover, waiting for the float to rise, and dislodging air bubbles from it, hinders rapid working.A description of the burette and fittings is appended with fig. 2. The unpredictability of the location, grade and width of narrow-vein deposits presents difficulties for mine geologists and engineers attempting to estimate, schedule, forecast and mine their deposit profitably. This unpredictability stems not only from the grade distribution within a vein, but also the irregularity of vein geometry in three-dimensional (3D) space. Traditional deterministic methods of modelling vein geometry do not account for the inherent variability of the veins, resulting in significant errors when using limited drill hole information. This paper presents a probabilistic method of modelling narrow-vein deposits using sequential gaussian simulation (SGS), which can quantify this variability and improve production forecasts. Vein geometry, thickness and grade are simulated to provide a number of different equi-probable realisations that each honour the drill hole and face sample input statistics. An example is presented from the Augusta narrow-vein Au-Sb mine in central Victoria, where the simulation results are validated against the input data and survey pick-ups of the veins along ore drives.

The Sams Creek gold deposit near Takaka in northwest Nelson was discovered in 1974 by CRA Exploration (CRAE) geologists. CRAE recognised the potential of the area and subsequently undertook a comprehensive exploration programme of geological mapping, soil and rock-chip sampling, geophysical surveys and diamond drilling. Exploration defined sporadic gold mineralisation contained entirely within a deformed and hydrothermally altered, peralkaline granite porphyry dyke with a seven kilometre strike length, and up to 60 m thickness. Rock chip samples indicated extensive and economically significant gold grades over approximately one kilometre strike of the dyke at Main Zone prospect. CRAE completed 30 diamond drill holes at this prospect and defined a limited resource. Oceana Gold Limited recommenced active exploration at the Sams Creek Project in late 2002, focusing on improving the geological understanding and known resource at Main Zone. Completion of 1041 m diamond drilling successfully increased the estimated resource to 10.7 Mt @ 2.12 g/t Au containing 729 000 oz at a 0.7 g/t cut off. A further campaign of 1560 m diamond drilling was undertaken in 2003 - 2004 to extend the resource and test the continuity of high grade mineralised zones. Deeper intersections of the porphyry dyke indicated geometrical complexity and grade variability similar to that observed at shallow levels. Recent research suggests that Sams Creek can be geologically classified as a variant of intrusion-related gold systems, and therefore comparable to some other, very large gold deposits. However, due to the rugged terrain and dyke geometry, surface drilling is reaching the limits of viability at Main Zone. If infill drilling continues to be successful then an underground decline may be developed to facilitate further exploration. Potential also exists along strike, where other significant gold anomalies are known but largely untested by drilling.

High purity alumina (HPA) is a processed, premium non-metallurgical alumina product characterised by its purity level ie 99.99 per cent (4N) or 99.999 per cent (5N). The market price, application, and performance of HPA varies widely according to its degree of purity. High purity alumina is a form of aluminium oxide (Al2O3) with growing use in LED lighting and coating on the ceramic cathode separator sheets in lithium ion batteries. This paper describes a study on producing high purity alumina from feldspar to produce HPA and potash for use as a fertiliser. The project was positive for a number of reasons. High potassium extraction (>99 per cent) was achieved in the alkali leach using sodium hydroxide as the leaching agent and full dissolution of the alkali leach residue was achieved using hydrochloric and sulfuric acid. The potential to produce a high purity alumina product via a complex but promising emerging process was assessed. The potential to extract potassium as potassium sulfate to add value to the project was also demonstrated with the test work.

The reverse flotation of Itabirite iron ore is typically performed after a desliming step in which most of the sub-10 µm particles are removed. This is done to limit processing problems such as poor flotation recovery of SiO2 due to slime coatings and increased slurry viscosities, unmanageable froths and increased losses of hematite particles due to entrainment. However, the rejection of ultrafine particles contributes to large losses in iron recovery and may contribute to the instability of tailings dams. The aim of this study is to decouple the effects of ultrafine particles in the pulp and froth phases to better understand the processing capabilities of the fines fraction. The flotation test work was performed in a special-purpose continuously operated laboratory flotation cell that has a deep froth section to simulate plant-scale froth conditions. Five conditions of fines addition were investigated at three different froth heights and a solids concentration of 50 per cent. The behaviour of the pulp and the froth were decoupled using froth stability and froth recovery tests. This showed that, even though there is an exponential increase in froth stability at increasing fines quantities, the performance of the pulp has the overriding effect on the overall SiO2 recovery. Pulp zone, froth zone and overall SiO2 recoveries showed that overall recoveries increased by about 3.6 per cent for every 1 per cent decrease in fines content. This meant a large increase of 20 per cent in SiO2 recovery when going from undeslimed to deslimed feed. This was driven largely by increases in the pulp zone recoveries, which were about 4 per cent for every 1 per cent decrease in fines content. The froth recoveries, on the other hand, decreased by between 0.75 per cent and 2.5 per cent for every 1 per cent decrease in fines content, depending on froth height. This paper explores further insights into iron ore flotation processing at different slimes concentrations.

The use of hydro scaling and in-cycle shotcrete to replace conventional jumbo scaling, mesh and bolting as the primary method of ground control for run of mine development has been investigated through extensive trials at the Waroonga mine, Agnew Gold Mining Company.These trials have progressed from investigating the productivity aspects of the method through to a three month mine-wide trial, which may yet lead to the adoption of this potentially best practice ground control technique at Agnew.Ov erseas trials and research have shown that hydro scaling results in a significant improvement in the shotcrete-rock bond strength. Good adhesive bond strength ensures that the shear strength of the shotcrete layer rather than itÆs flexural or tensile strength is fully mobilised as rock mass reinforcement.This maximises shotcretes ground reinforcement capability and it is suggested that a bolt-less fibrecrete support design is feasible using the hydro scaling technique.

SMC Resources Limited is implementing a selective mining approach at the Hadleigh Castle mine, formerly operated by Aurora Gold Limited. The main ore zone has a length of 250 metres and dips at 40 - 45¦ to the south. Gold mineralisation occurs in a variety of quartz-sulphide lodes in sericitised granodiorite. Shallow dips, alteration intensity and mineralisation style combine to make mining relatively difficult. Previously unworked, high-grade, shallow dipping (30 - 45¦), narrow quartz-sulphide lodes within the hanging-wall of the deposit are also being selectively exploited. Annual production of 35 000 oz Au is forecast from 185 000 tpa ore grading 6.5 g/t Au over a currently envisaged mine life of six years. Operations completed to-date include deepening the decline and access development of the first two levels beneath the previous workings. Longhole stoping operations have commenced in the main ore zone with air leg stoping also underway in the hanging wall lodes.

Since the mid-1990s, the Chino Mine Facility (Chino) located near Silver City, New Mexico has been developing a closure plan with financial assurance to protect water quality, as required by State regulations. In February 2002, Chino and the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) reached agreement on a closure plan; a closure cost amount of approximately $US 394 million ($A 591 million) was finalised in April 2003. Both the New Mexico Water Quality Act Regulations (1977) and the New Mexico Mining Act Regulations (1993) guided development of the closure plan and financial assurance amount. The process incorporated many years of correspondence, studies, negotiations and administrative hearings. The major technical issues focused on regrading slopes of the leach ore stockpiles and waste rock piles; cover systems; water treatment systems; and abatement of ground water contamination. The proposed financial assurance amount covers all closure costs and provides for perpetual water treatment.

Although Western Mining Corporation has been producing high grade nickel ore at Kambalda since 1967, it has only recently become a significant gold producer.The main source of Gold ore has been the Victory Gold Mine located 17 kilometres South of Kambalda.This mine produced small tonnages of high grade gold ore from a sediment horizon within a complex sequence of mafic flows, in the 1890's, early 1900's and 1930's.Today, mining is centred around 2 com-pletely different ore bodies named Victory and Defiance, and involves several different mining methods. This paper describes the Operation's history and gives an outline of the proposed stoping methods.

To enable ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) to be used on an equal weight basis with nitroglycerine explosives, smaller diameter bore holes became necessary with consequent modifications to drill steel and burden on holes. Detonation of AN-FO in small diameter holes proved successful both with and without primer charges but some alterations were required to adapt anoloders to the smaller holes.Important factors in training all operators in the new charging method were the retention of improved fragmentation, avoidance of excessive overbreak and keeping wall rock dilution to an absolute minimum. The successful storage of ammonium nitrate in climatic conditions with daily temperature fluctuations above and below the critical 90°F has been achieved.INTRODUCTIONTechnical aspects of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-Fa) blasting agent are well covered in recent literature. This paper deals primarily with the manner of its introduction as the principal explosive underground at Great Boulder Gold Mines Ltd. and with the many problems encountered in the process. Following reasonably successful experimental firings in June 1962', using granular ammonium nitrate and an anoloder, permission was granted by theWestern Australian Mines Department to carry out test work in selected areas of the mine. Investigations were carried out to understand the effect of liquid viscosity (u = 1 x 10-3 - 5 x 10-' Ns/m2) on the size of primary bubbles formed at high gas injection rates (Q = 100 - 1000 cc/s, U = 0.04 - 0.42 mach) under room temperature conditions using flush tuyere (3 mm diameter) operating vertically upward. Tuyere pressure fluctuations were correlated to the mode of bubble formation by simultaneously filming the bubble and the corresponding tuyere pressure fluctuations displayed on an oscilloscope screen. A simple mathematical treatment is presented to estimate bubble size in viscous liquids. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental measurements.

This paper describes how specific technical and regulatory issues related to water management have been dealt with at Anglo AmericanÆs Moranbah North mine. It compiles the collection of practices that have been implemented since 2010 in response to climatic and regulatory drivers. Operations must continually evolve as they face emerging challenges. For Moranbah North mine, one key challenge is the integration of its mine water system to that of its new neighbouring mine Grosvenor. The commitment to ongoing improvement has placed the mine in a good position to face this particular challenge.Water-related risks were identified then mitigated by technical practices, which have focused on improving underground water management, increasing storage capacity and installing a state-of-the-art control system for the management of water on-site and for releases of mine-affected water to the environment. These practices are supported by an extensive monitoring and audit system that provides confidence in the reporting of activities and outcomes. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Ertsberg mining district is a 100 km2 area in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. The district hosts mineralised and barren, outcropping and hidden porphyry and equigranular intrusions. There are at least six major (100+ m wide) porphyry intrusions identified from surface and underground mapping and drill cores. These are the Grasberg Igneous Complex (GIC), Karume porphyry, Lembah Tembaga porphyry, Ertsberg Stockwork Zone porphyry, Kay intrusion and the Wanagon intrusion. Recent deep drilling adjacent to the GIC identified a new hidden porphyry at depth, the Gajah Tidur (Sleeping Elephant), which extends south-west beneath the Kucing Liar skarn. Other named small porphyry dykes and plugs in the district include the West Grasberg, North Grasberg, Idenberg, South East and Zaagkam intrusions. The largest equigranular intrusion is the multiphase Ertsberg diorite.Igneous activities occurred in a relatively short span (<1 million years) from about 3.4 Ma to 2.7 Ma ago, based on U-Pb zircon dating. The various intrusions in the district related to ore mineralisation are high K and appear to have been derived from the same parental chamber, based on similar whole rock rare earth element patterns. Radiogenic Nd- and Sr-isotopic variations indicate that there were multiple recharge events into the parental chamber.The larger intrusions and all economic mineralisation occur in a 4 km wide zone that parallels the N60W-trending axis of the Yellow Valley Syncline (YVS), one of the large folds generated during collisional tectonism. Intrusion pathways at ~3 Ma were localised into dilatational areas in a late and/or post-collisional NW-trending, left-lateral strike-slip zone with Riedel shear offsets between the major fault zones. PT Freeport Indonesia is a copper-gold mine operation located in West Papua, Indonesia about 3500 km east of Jakarta. Current ore production is about 270 000 tpd, of which 30 000 tpd comes from underground. In the future, the production from underground will be gradually increased to reach a maximum of 115 000 tpd, as the Grasberg open pit production decreases. The current and future challenge for PT Freeport Indonesia is to fill the quota of underground miners, as Indonesia does not have a long culture of underground work. At present, there are only three active underground mines in Indonesia. The lack of underground skilled labour incited the company to develop its own skilled workforce. In the mean time, to overcome the shortage of personnel, the underground management had to find a way to improve the productivity. Since 21 May 1998, PT Freeport Indonesia Underground Mine has operated with the new roster of two rotating shifts a day, 11 hours per shift. The previous schedule consisted of three nine-hour shifts per day, six days a week, for a total of 26 working days in a month. This change was intended to increase the productivity of the miners. With the previous roster, studies determined that the effective working time was only seven hours per shift. The new roster produces an improvement of effective working hours to about nine hours per shift. As a result, total production has increased by 33 per cent and the utilisation of production equipment has increased by 16.5 per cent. This paper describes the background of the decision to change the work schedule, the study carried out to evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of the new shift roster, the challenges, and then compares the results for various parameters between the old schedule and the new one.

Throughout the 2016/2017 financial year, the NSW Resources Regulator conducted an assessment of each underground metalliferous operation across the state to assess how each operation managed the principal mining hazard of ground and strata control. The assessment considered all aspects of the mining process, including all aspects of managing geotechnical risk within drawpoints. This assessment is ongoing and, therefore, this paper is limited to the first six mines assessed in the program.In 2015 there were three fatalities in and around underground drawpoints in Australian metalliferous mines. Whilst many of the systems of work around underground development are consistent across the industry, there are large discrepancies around how each underground mining operation manage the risks associated with drawpoints.For drawpoints to be effectively managed, their management needs to be considered at the earliest stages of the mine planning process. By using downholes and adopting remote systems of work – systems that are continuing to improve with technology – the risks drawpoints posed can be greatly reduced.The assessment by the NSW Resources Regulator revealed a number of common failings across the state in the management of the risks that drawpoints pose. The assessment also observed a number of innovative practices that particular operations have adopted in the wake of serious incidents occurring within drawpoints at their operation; however, these practices have not been communicated to other operations.It is hoped the learnings from the assessment can be considered by industry and reduce the risks drawpoints pose in underground metalliferous mines.CITATION:Hill, X, 2017. Mines operating close to communities face growing challenges, especially with their drilling and blasting activities. Proper management of environmental and community impacts is critical to provide sustainability to the mining business in the long-term, by enabling the licensee to operate. This paper will present new technology solutions to minimise the impacts to communities and the environment from blasting operations. A case study of the wireless initiation projects conducted at Kinross Morro do Ouro Mine (located in Paracatu, Minas Gerais – Brazil), will be presented. Focused on overcoming the complex challenges in the mine, Orica and Kinross searched for initiatives to optimise the drilling and blasting operations. The team evaluated the WebGen™ wireless initiation system for controlling environmental impacts as well as operational flexibility and productivity. Since January 2023, three planned wireless blasts to demonstrate the technology and applications were executed. In the tests, the vibration level was able to be maintained lower than the limit of 3.0 mm/s while dust and flyrock impacts were well controlled. The main benefits of using this technology for the Morro do Ouro Mine are: reducing the number of blasts while increasing the blasted mass per month; control of projection of fragments using additional cover; dust control by watering the bench easily; lightning initiation risk reduction due to the absence of wires or tubes on the surface; flexibility in changing the blast day to better control the noise and dust; flexibility in mine planning mining (potential application in the future). The use of the WebGen™ wireless initiation system, enables improved productivity while enhancing safety and reducing impacts to communities. Implementation of this technology has enabled Kinross Morro do Ouro Mine to build trust with its neighbours, maintain the license to operate, and helping to mobilise resources in a sustainable way. This has allowed Kinross to position Morro do Ouro Mine as a world reference operation, especially in relation to innovation, safety, and social responsibility.

Gas drainage has been practiced for many years mainly for safety reasons in various countries in Europe, in the U.S.A., the U.K. and Japan. Legislation has been developed to control the production, transport- ation and utilisation of methane and associated gases. Gas drainage is now being carried out at some Australian Collieries, but as this is a new venture little specific legislation is available. This paper briefly describes the drainage methods and legislation applied overseas, gives a brief history of gas drainage in N.S.W. and indicates the deficiencies of the present legislation. It outlines the approach to new legislation which will deal comprehensively with gas drainage operations and utilisation in New South Wales.
