For more than 15 years after the Northparkes orebodies were first discovered in 1976, the project was delayed by the need to find an economic way of mining the low-grade E26 deposit. The decision to use a low-cost block caving method to mine the orebody was made in the early-1990s; but the project's future did not solidify until 1993 when a radical new approach was adopted which sought to integrate business imperatives with technology and organisation strategies. The approach led to the establishment of a strategic vision which tied together all the components that could have a major impact on the project, to provide a framework for guiding strategic choices. The strategic vision strived to break away from the old rules of how mines are organised and operated; and involved finding imaginative new ways to radically redesign mining processes to achieve quantum leaps in performance.

Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) is a copper, gold and magnetite mining and processing operation located 38 kilometres north east of Cloncurry in the Mount Isa - Cloncurry mineral district of north west Queensland, Australia. The EHM ore body is an iron oxide copper gold deposit with an average grade of 1.1 percent copper, 0.5 g/tonne gold and 22 percent magnetite.At the end of 2009, after a series of promising laboratory test work, EHM converted the ball mill media charge from forged steel to high chrome media. Laboratory test work also indicated that with the use of high chrome media, the pH was able to be reduced with no negative impact on plant performance. At high pH values (above 10.5), the forged media is passivated, so as the pH of the system drops the media corrosion rate increases and floods the system with corrosion products, affecting flotation. As the high chrome media is much more inert, pH has less of an effect on copper flotation response.This paper provides an overview of the effects of reducing the pH in the EHM copper rougher flotation circuit. The pH in the roughers was dropped from 10.6 to 9.6 to determine the impact on the rougher performance and the subsequent performance of the whole copper flotation circuit. It was found that there was a slightly increased improvement in copper recovery and no statistical change in either the rougher or final copper concentrate grades for copper and gold.With the reduction in pH, there was a noticeable reduction in lime usage from 0.85 kg of lime per tonne of ore processed to 0.55 kg/t. Hibbing Taconite is a Lake Superior-type granular magnetite taconite deposit occurring within the Biwabik Iron Formation along Minnesota’s central Mesabi Iron Range. The deposit is situated on the northern margin of the Proterozoic Animikie Basin. The deposit strikes northeast, dips gently southeast, and occupies 10 km of strike length. Mining focuses on 50 m of granular cherty and laminated slaty taconite within the Lower Cherty member.Ores generally consist of a quartz, magnetite, siderite, ankerite, minnesotaite, stilpnomelane, and haematite mineral assemblage. Processing is optimised by exploiting the physical and chemical variations that exist between three major ore types. Taconite ore averages 20 per cent magnetic iron (MagFe), 27 per cent weight recovery (WtRec) and produces a final concentrate with 4.5 per cent silica (SiO2). Since 1976, production has totalled approximately 237 million long tons (Mlt) of pellets (8 Mlt per year rated capacity).Ore processing uses a simple fl ow sheet of autogenous grinding (<0.044 mm) followed by two phases of wet magnetic separation, fi ltering, limestone/bentonite addition, balling, and firing to create pellets averaging 66 per cent total iron. A Liberation Index (LIS) is used as a primary guide for ore grading and metallurgical control. Grind requirements, magnetite liberation and silica grade are closely monitored to ensure plant optimisation and product quality.A recent program of benefi ciation of low-grade ores by in-pit crushing and dry magnetic cobbing has demonstrated that low-grade ores (<17 per cent MagFe, <25 per cent WtRec) can achieve a signifi cant metallurgical upgrade (up to 25 per cent MagFe and 40 per cent WtRec). This operation recovers 60 per cent of the total crushed volume, and has a calculated effi ciency factor (magnetic iron recovery) of 79 per cent. This paper discusses the benefi ts of this upgrading and its effects on ore blending and processing.

Steelmaking has a significant contribution in producing greenhouse gases and there is a worldwide push towards decarbonising the process. One of the approaches to reduce CO2 emissions is to use hydrogen in the blast furnace (BF) as the reductant gas. However, hydrogen reduction is an endothermic reaction, bringing changes to the temperature distribution in the BF. Understanding iron ore sinter mineralogy and reducibility under a hydrogen atmosphere is essential to optimise the process. In this study, sinter analogues in the Fe3O4-CaO-SiO2 (FCS) ternary system together with industrial sinters were reduced in H2-rich and CO atmospheres and the resulting reducibility and associated mineralogical changes were observed. Results show that magnetite-lime-silica (MLS) sinter analogues had similar reduction rates under H2 and CO, and also higher reducibility than most of the industrial sinters, suggesting that magnetite sinters could be used efficiently in a conventional or hydrogen blast furnace.

Pumped co-disposal of coal processing waste was promoted in the 1990-2000s as a low-cost highperformance alternative to tailings dams. In particular it would avoid high up-front capital for rejects trucks and dam embankments, and would produce a combined waste deposit with better geotechnical properties than either coarse rejects or tailings. Overall, the promise was not delivered; in particular, upon discharge the waste segregated by size, and operators responded by moving the coarser waste to contain the finer waste. In consequence, not only did design analysis lag behind construction, but some of the initial expectations persisted with the result that analyses did not fully represent what was occurring on the ground. After more than twenty years inspecting, designing and tending Co-Disposal Areas (CDAs), it is apparent that they are essentially upstream constructed tailings dams with some more favourable aspects but also a few unique quirks. Although waste management technology has moved on somewhat, the high cost of changing CHPP waste circuits means that most mines with pumped codisposal will continue to discharge mixed waste slurry into CDAs. It is therefore worthwhile to share some lessons in the hope of promoting sounder design, operation and rehabilitation. These include: • Discharged waste does not form a homogeneous wholly competent deposit but instead comprises materials ranging from sandy gravel to silty clay with the distribution determined by movement of the discharge and decant structures; • CDAs circulate and contain a lot of water; • As a result of the first two points, some areas of the CDA comprise saturated fine waste that is no different from tailings and, like tailings, often behaves in an undrained manner; • Seepage is inevitable and desirable because strength improves as water is removed. However, stability is strongly impacted by pore pressures and in design these need to be rationally rather than optimistically considered; • As CDAs are built to about 40m or higher, strength-deformation characteristics of the foundation become more important; • Even if geomechanically stable, CDAs will need covers to prevent salts and acids from reaching the surface; and • Erosional stability of the cover material(s) will probably dictate maximum slopes for rehabilitation.

The progressive development of underground mines frequently requires increased ventilation flow rates through mine shafts that were originally designed for lower rates. Where these shafts are equipped with conveyances running on rope guides, the higher air flow rates adversely affect the lateral motion of conveyances and could cause conveyances to collide with the shaft walls or with one another. Hence the safety impact of higher flow rates requires proper assessment. This can be undertaken by use of computer simulation models to predict the dynamic motion of the conveyances during hoisting. It can also be undertaken entirely by field testing, or using a combination of simulation and field testing. This paper discusses these techniques and makes cautionary remarks about setting an absolute generic maximum flow velocity for all shafts. In the current tough mining environment with lower commodity prices, operators need to improve operational profitability. Optimised equipment asset management is a sustainable way to achieve this objective. The increased efficiency of installed process equipment positively contributes to the circuit performance, affecting metallurgical performance, plant availability and operating costs. Nui Phao Mining Company Limited (NPMC) operates a polymetallic mine located in Vietnam. The circuit produces four main products, tungsten, fluorspar, bismuth and copper. Tungsten is the major revenue producer. The operation experienced the following equipment inefficiencies in its copper and bulk sulfide flotation (BSF) circuits:• lower than expected metallurgical performance - the BSF rougher flotation tails contained coarse (+106 µm) sulfur minerals which affected the downstream tungsten gravity circuit. The unrecovered sulfur competed with tungsten minerals affecting both tungsten recovery and product grade. • structural integrity and safety - the flotation circuit structures experienced excessive vibration beyond the acceptable tolerance levels. The vibration was attributed to the flotation mechanism design and impeller tip speeds. • equipment reliability and wear life issues - the flotation mechanisms were being replaced every six months, with reported failures at three months. This resulted in high operational costs. A mineralogical evaluation of the ore indicated that the coarse sulfur minerals were well liberated and relatively rich in pyrrhotite and pyrite. It was predicted that these particles should be recoverable by flotation under optimum conditions. NPMC worked collaboratively with Outotec to investigate options to improve the metallurgical performance of both sulfur and tungsten. A review of the copper and BSF rougher circuit infrastructure was also undertaken and focused on reducing the structural vibration and improving mechanism wear life. Prior to the circuit upgrade, laboratory and pilot testing was conducted to validate the circuit improvements. The final solution included the installation of Outotec FloatForce® mechanisms in the existing copper and BSF rougher circuits, and a new flash circuit (SkimAir®) treating the rougher tails stream ahead of the tungsten gravity circuit. The flash circuit is unique, as typically these types of cells are installed in grinding circuits. By March 2016, all circuit upgrades were complete, however the initial metallurgical performance was below expectations. NPMC and Outotec worked together to investigate and improve performance through further equipment modifications. Since October 2016, the metallurgical performance has improved significantly. Coarse sulfur mineral recovery has improved, resulting in an overall increase in recovery of sulfur and tungsten of 4.7% and 2.7% respectively. The Outotec FloatForce mechanism has also delivered operational benefits, with a reduction in structural vibration to within acceptable levels (<4.0 mm/s) and an improvement in mechanism wear life by 150%. A central aim of rehabilitation is to ensure that disturbed land is returned to a post-mine condition that is safe, stable and self-sustaining. This paper describes initial results from a grazing trial at the New Acland open-cut coal mine in southern Queensland (-27.27 lat, 151.72 long) that aims to assess the sustainability and viability of cattle production from rehabilitated mined land compared to production from surrounding unmined lands (Newsome 2014). The grazing trial was established in 2013 by the Acland Pastoral Company, a subsidiary of New Hope Coal, on lands previously used for dairying, beef and crops before open cut coal mining of the Walloon coal measures began in 2002. The area has a mean annual rainfall of 640 mm. "The Caijiaying lead zinc mine is located in China, north-west of Beijing, in Hebei Province. The region experiences severe winters, below -35°C, and warm summers, up to 30°C. The mine and concentrator commenced operations in the second half of 2005 with a conventional tailings disposal system consisting of a tailings dam with peripheral ring main discharge and central water recovery. A second similar dam sharing one common wall was added later. In view of the extreme winter conditions tailings lines and ring mains plus spigots, together with return water lines, require insulation and electrical trace heating. The volume of process water trapped as ice in the tailings dam ponds each winter is significant. This seasonal variation presents a major difficulty in the management of process water availability. Although Caijiaying is an underground mine there was no backfill plant at the start of operations. As plant throughput increased more quickly than originally anticipated, tailings storage capacity became a prime concern. The construction of a backfill plant in 2007 reduced the pressure on surface tailings storage area requirements, but as suitable land on which to construct further tailings storage was both expensive and difficult to acquire, a more efficient use of the available area was required. Dry tailings storage, where flotation tailings are filtered to provide an immediate return of process water plus ‘dry’ tailings filter cake for stacking, provided an answer to both the land area required, and the water management difficulties. Over the 40 years that the author has been engaged in the Australian underground coal mining industry, there has been a continuous improvement in safety performance as the sector has grown in size and productivity. The underground environment hosts many hazards with significant risk profiles that are kept in check by effective health and safety management systems that have evolved largely following major underground disasters. The Tyrrhenian micro-nodules, findable at low depths (200/600 m under s l) are a reasonable reserve of manganese. They can be easily and cheaply recovered but do not contain valuable metals as in the case of oceanic nodules. In this work a hydrometallurgical process for manganese recovery from Tyrrhenian nodules is presented. The studied treatment includes the following operations: magnetic enrichment, reducing leaching, leach liquor purification and electrowinning . The study shows that the most important step in the process is the preliminary manganese enrichment. It can be done directly on the platform reducing not only the transport cost, but also the residue mud in the metallurgical plant. The leaching parameters such as status and size of nodules, temperature, composition of leaching solution and S/L ratio have been investigated. After purifying the leach liquor by iron precipitation as ammonium jarosite , the conditions to electrowin manganese have been investigated. The yields of both manganese leaching and iron precipitation together with current efficiency and specific energy consumption in the electrowinning step are given.

The BHP Billiton Cannington Mine uses paste as the principal method of backfill. The paste consists of mine tailings and cement. The pastefill process at Cannington includes a surface plant where the thickened total tailings stream is filtered using two vacuum disc filters operating in parallel. The filter cake is mixed with Portland cement in a spiral mixer to produce a paste at a specified yield stress and cement content. The initial system design only required paste to be delivered under gravity. In July 2001, Cannington Mine expanded to 1.8 million tonnes per annum. In order to achieve this, production commenced on five new levels underground, 350 metres horizontally from the paste plant. Due to the high viscosity of paste, this distance was too far to transport by gravity. Traditionally, paste has been transported only short distances (50 m) using positive displacement pumps, with very limited success. At Cannington, a conveyor was installed which was designed to achieve zero spillage into the environment. This paper discusses the innovative design strategies used to attain zero harm on the environment whilst conveying a material, which is difficult to transport.

Mineralogical analysis of supergene sulphide ore recovered from areas close to the underground workings at the abandoned Mutooroo (South Australia) mine shows that the original sulphide minerals have undergone substantial alteration. The cause of this alteration is believed to be contact with the highly saline, acidic mine water. The copper is now present as a sulphide that can best be described as a copper- and iron-delicient chalcopyrite, CuxFeyS2, where in most cases x < y. The values of x and y vary from point-to-point within each grain.Leach tests under a variety of conditions show that dissolution of the copper from the supergene sulphide ore can be readily achieved, particularly when compared with the behaviour of Mt Isa chalcopyrite concentrate. For the supergene sulphide ore, an increase in the acidity and the iron(lll) concentration of the leachant re ults in an increase in the rate of copper dissolution.The results are briefly discussed in terms of the experimental in-situ leaching operation at Mutooroo, South Australia.

"Investors and other stakeholders assessing the risk, opportunity and relative value associated with a resource project need to appreciate the project in its correct context. Errors, omissions, biased reporting or conflicting information in project reporting may lead to a misinterpretation of technical and financial results, resulting in biased estimates or assumptions on project value.This paper provides a simple ‘Resource Project Framework’ for presenting a project’s status that may be readily benchmarked against other similar projects and to illustrate the stages required to advance the project outcomes to higher levels of certainty. The steelmaking desulfurisation plays an important role in coal-based steelmaking route of blast furnace and BOF converter within the flow sheet of BF-deS-BOF. With the advent of H2-based ironmaking and steelmaking process, the transition flow sheet of DRI-Smelter-BOF has been assessed and developed by the steelmaking industry. What is the role of deS in H2-based route of DRI-smelter-BOF? This paper will present the influence of sulfur-containing iron ore on steelmaking desulfurisation and the leading role of EAF-smelter played in H2-based steelmaking route. The sulfur contents of iron ore vary considerably around the world and lower-grade iron ores with high sulfur are likely to be used for H2-based route, a considerable amount of sulfur that comes from DRI will report to the melt of EAF-smelter and the operating conditions of EAF-smelter also impact the sulfur content of the hot melt for steelmaking deS. The EAF-smelter of H2-based route is the focus of the steelmaking industry at moment, unfortunately, an industrial-scale EAF-smelter has been the missing link of the flow sheet of DRI-Smelter-deS-BOF, despite similar EAF-smelters being used for various applications of Fe-Ti and Fe-Ni processes. The latest progress is that several pilot-scale and industrial-scale EAF-smelters with reducing capability are planned for construction within next several years and low-grade Australia iron ores are certainly to be employed as basic feedstocks for H2-based route of DRI-Smelter-deS-BOF.

Two years ago I was sitting in a big lecture theatre at the School of Mines in Kalgoorlie at the annual New LeadersÆ Conference listening to a guy tell us all how much he loved his job, travelling the country ælegallyÆ blowing stuff up à and getting paid to do it. I would have paid to see and do the things he spoke of à now IÆm that guy. From finishing a mining engineering degree at the University of Ballarat, through the job hunt, to firing environmental blasts in Tassie and designing and implementing construction blasts in the middle of the Gold Coast. My name is Rohan Stevens and IÆm a blast-o-holic. While the æjob huntÆ we all embark on toward the end of our degrees is a stressful time, itÆs also very exciting in the current climate. There are a number of things I have learnt through both my hunt for the job that best suited me and working for the worldÆs largest explosives manufacturer. Fully grouted cable bolts have been used in underground mining industry for more than 40 years and are becoming more and more popular especially when severe geological conditions are encountered, such as high stresses and large cross-section excavations. The axial performance of cable bolts are mainly relied on the load transfer process between the cables themselves and surrounding rock masses via grout annulus. Therefore, the selected grouts play a significant role in determining the reinforcement quality for underground openings. In order to better understand the mechanical properties of Stratabinder HP grout, which is one type of cementitious grouts commonly used in Australian underground coalmines, plenty of unconfined compressive tests are conducted on it. Following diverse standards, two different kinds of samples are prepared and tested with the w/c ratio ranging from 0.35 to 0.45. During the test important mechanical properties including uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) values, Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratios and so forth are recorded. Based on experimental results, the effect of w/c ratio on the mechanical properties of Stratabinder HP grout is studied. ‘Grade Engineering<sub>®</sub> is an integrated approach to coarse rejection that matches a suite of separation technologies to ore specific characteristics and compares the net value of rejecting low value components in current feed streams to existing mine plans as part of a system-view’ (Walters, 2017). Two of these technologies are directly recoverable through screening stages: Natural Deportment and Induced Deportment. The potential for taking advantage of “Natural Deportment” by size following blasting and crushing has been demonstrated for a range of ore types. Simple and low cost screening can in some cases generate a fine product with improved grade and a lower grade oversize which can be directed to leach or to waste. Where an ore body consists of many different ore types, the traditional approach of blending to metal grade will often add to complexity of treatment, which will reduce the effect of “natural deportment” by size.CITATION: Jokovic, V, Walters, P, Adair, B and Morrison, R, 2018. Imaging sensor systems designed for the mining and minerals industry incorporate different physical measurement technologies that can be used to detect the machine environment, such as laser, ultrasonic/sonar, video and RF-sensors. The underlying physical measurement principles cannot be employed in most applications near the face without regular maintenance due to the harsh environmental conditions like dust, dirt or moisture. However, that is the area, where imaging sensors are most valuable to the machine operator. In the domain of 2D radar sensors these have been either restricted by the angular coverage area or by limited adaptability of signal processing algorithms. The unique full digital solid state design will establish a generation step in mining applications.In order to fill this gap of terrain imaging sensors, the Institute for Mining and Metallurgy Machinery (IMR) of the RWTH Aachen University, in cooperation with the radar company indurad, developed an imaging sensor based on radar technology employing the digital beam forming (DBF) concept. Through multiple transmitting and receiving antennas the sensor delivers high accuracy range and angular information. Using adaptive digital signal processing with multiple imaging algorithms and target detection routines, data of the surrounding environment can be used to enable automation functions in mining.A comprehensive range of radar scans in different environments have been evaluated and benchmarked by using laser scanners. Accuracy measurements in range and angular direction have shown minimal differences. Experimental measurements have been performed at slopes, on conveyor belts and hot cement clinker silos. The experimental system uses a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) front-end combined with a processing unit for signal analysis and target detection.
