Xstrata is the operator of both Minera Alumbrera Ltd (50 per cent Xstrata, 50 per cent Wheaton River) and Ernest Henry Mining Pty Ltd, (99.99 per cent Xstrata), both copper-gold deposits, using conventional SAG/ball milling at current capacities of 36 Mt/yr and 10.3 Mt/yr respectively. Alumbrera is located in Catamarca Province, in the north west of Argentina. Ernest Henry is located in Cloncurry, north west Queensland, Australia. Both operations started in late 1997, with commercial production achieved in early 1998. Different designs and equipment are in use for both operations, however the evolution of SAG milling performance, although logically related to their specific features, reflect similar trends of consistent increases in throughput. This paper will discuss the main changes to the SAG mill liners in both operations and the results achieved to date. A summary of the operating strategies will be included.

Despite the importance and usefulness of basicity in metallurgical slags, the optimum quantitative expression of it has remained elusive, partly due to the fact that the precise concept of basicity has not been properly clarified. The two basic approaches to the concept of basicity are the Lux-Flood, which perceives basicity in terms of the activity of the free oxide ion, a O2- , and the Lewis, which perceives basicity in terms of the ability to donate negative charge. The former has been almost universally adopted in the area of metallurgical slags, while the latter has been increasingly accepted in the field of glass chemistry. In this paper, some difficulties of the Lux-Flood approach are pointed out, including the need for indirect measures of a O2- , which have proliferated in recent years. Accordingly, it is suggested that the Lewis approach has a good deal to commend it, and that the quantification of it in terms of optical basicity is the best measure of basicity available, which should therefore be more widely applied in metallurgical slags than it currently is. The fact that there are intrinsic problems in evaluating the optical basicities for the transition metal oxides is acknowledged, and a new scale is recommended. The patterns of iso-optical basicity lines in ternary systems are shown to agree well with the pattern of iso-activity and iso-capacity lines under appropriate conditions. * Originally published in the Proceedings of MINPREX 2000, published by The AusIMM.

The first part (lH of this work dealt with the process of recrystallization of single crystals of lead after deformation by creep, as revealed by macroscopical examination. It was shown that when recrystallization commenced, a crystal, termed the primary crystal, started to grow at the edge of the specimen and extended into the body of the specimen along the slip planes. At some stage during the growth of this crystal, other crystals appeared at the boundary of this first crystal and fragments of the parent crystal. From thispoint, recrystallization was accelerated with relatively rapid necking down of the specimen until fracture occurred.All those crystals formed after the primary crystal were given the term secondary crystals. In the present paper is given a detailed account of the orientations of the primary and secondary crystals.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe size of the test pieces and the manner of loading were given in the previous paper (1). X-ray back reflection photographs were taken of the individual primary and secondary crystals and from them were determined the orientations. A drive, 3,500 ft long, was planned to explore mineralization exposed by diamond drilling. A rate of advance of 150 ft per fortnight, approximately double previous Broken Hill rates, was required. Subsequent to the completion of this drive its extension for a further 6,200 ft was planned to provide a main haulage way along which ore could be transported from a newly acquired lease back to the main hoisting shaft, a total distance of 13,500 ft.This paper describes the working conditions, relationships, manning and costs, and gives details of the cycle and equipment used to achieve rates up to 170 ft per fortnight.OBJECTIVEDiamond drilling from the 1,000 ft level at the Delprat Shaft section had indicated that the zone of mineralization, about 150 ft wide, which had been explored on the 1,000 ft level for a length of 2,600 ft, continued downwards with a westerly dip. The drilling results showed that within this wide zone there were arrower lenses of mineralization of possibly payable grade (see composite plan, Fig. 1).Diamond drill holes of 2,000 ft and over, particularly through heavily sheared areas of sericite schist, had been found to be costly, slow, and inadequate in testing the potential and trends of these smaller concentrations of mineralization.It was therefore decided that an exploratory drive should be advanced from the northern limit of the 1,480 ft level into the western mineralization, and that from this drive diamond drill holes should be drilled at dose intervals to outline the ore.The 1,480 ft level was chosen for the following reasons.1. It had the greatest northerly reach of the accessible levels at No. 7 Shaft section below the 1,000 ft horizon and therefore would enable the test to be made most quickly.

Blasting operations in open cut mines results in airblast, ground vibration and rock movement with the potential for wild flyrock. In some mines there is a trend towards blasting closer to established infrastructure as extraction boundaries alter with increased resource prices and changed economic circumstances. Mine infrastructure in close proximity to blasting has the potential to be damaged by ground vibration and wild flyrock especially. To provide guidance for the determination of appropriate buffer distances and blast specifications, this paper describes methodologies that may be used to determine the potential for damage to infrastructure by predicting:dynamic blast;near field ground vibration levels;dynamic blast strains induced in infrastructure by consideration of ground vibration,ground strain and response amplification;potential for damage by comparing induced strains with allowable working strainsfrom structure design codes and serviceability requirements; andflyrock throw distances based on models developed from flyrock investigations.This report demonstrates the use of strain prediction methodologies developed during Australian Coal Association Research Programme (ACARP) Project C14057 for infrastructure such as conveyor belts, transmission poles and towers, buildings and bridges.

The Middle and Lower Yangtze River metallogenic belt is one of the most important polymetallic resource areas in China. Iron oxide-apatite deposits, mainly distributed in Ningwu and Luzong volcanic basins, are a distinct type of iron deposits in this region. These deposits have a close temporal and spatial relationship with Mesozoic dioritic porphyries and are characterised by magnetite-apatite-pyroxene/actinolite ± anhydrite assemblage and large-scale sodic-calcic alteration.Widespread multiphase inclusions in pre- to main-mineralisation stage pyroxene and garnet in Meishan (in the Ningwu basin), Luohe and Nihe (both in the Luzong basin) iron deposits were trapped at ~780°C in extremely saline brines (~90 wt per cent NaCl equivalent), consisting of Na (13–24 wt per cent), K (7–11 wt per cent), Ca (~7 wt per cent), Fe (~2 wt per cent), Cl (19–47 wt per cent) and SO4 (3–39 wt per cent), based on petrologic, microthermometric, Raman spectroscopic studies and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses of natural fluid inclusions and synthetic analogues. The high Cl/Br, Na/B and S/B ratios in brine inclusions and the heavy sulfur isotopic values of anhydrite and pyrite (d34SAnh = +15.2 to +16.9‰, d34SPy = +4.6 to +12.1‰) suggest a significant contribution from both halite- and anhydrite-bearing sedimentary rocks. The involvement of evaporites caused the production of large amounts of high-salinity brines with apparently enhanced capacity to extract iron from the dioritic intrusions.According to their geologic features and the above characteristics, these iron oxide-apatite deposits are considered to be a special type of iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) deposits characterised by high contents of Na, Ca, Cl and SO4 in the ore-forming fluids. Currently, many commercial sinter plants are exploring the potential addition of high-grade iron ore concentrates to improve the sinter grade. A better understanding of the ore blend, granule behaviour and green bed properties is critical to making this change and maintaining productivity in the sinter plant. This study compared the performance of a laboratory scale granulation drum to a commercial scale unit. The blend used was an Asia-Pacific style sinter blend containing iron ore concentrates. The operating conditions of the two granulation drums (laboratory and commercial scale) were fixed at the same Froude Number (0.00337), space factor (15 per cent) and residence time (4.5 mins). The granules were characterised by measuring their mean size, size distribution and green bed voidage. It was found that the laboratory scale granules were representative of commercial sinter plant granules at similar moisture content. When the moisture was fixed at ~6.9 per cent, granulation time had no significant effect. A further fundamental investigation was undertaken to measure the water holding capacity and intra-particle porosity of the individual ores used in this study. The kinetics of water absorption were measured which showed that water absorbs quickly into the ore particles within the first 60 seconds, slowing down until final saturation was attained after six hours. A linear relationship between the water holding capacity and intra-particle porosity was noted for different ore particle sizes. The results of this study provide a baseline understanding of the current commercial sinter blend and encourage exploring the specific effect of increasing the proportion of ultrafine concentrates in sintering in a future study.

A study of literature on the epidiorite dykes which transgress the Broken Hill lode and its wall rocks reveals a considerable diversity of thought regarding the time of emplacement of such dykes. In this paper it is deduced that the epidiorite dykes were formed at a late stage and were probably post-ore. Detailed mapping, sampling, and correlation of data from over 100 exposures substantiates this deduction. Physical disruption of the epidiorite dykes is indicated and some interaction of the epidiorite and ore at the time of intrusion is inferred.Further petrological study may confirm this.

Flotation has been in use at Broken Hill for nearly 100 years, and the process has gone through many different optimisation studies over that time. This paper reviews the current flotation practice at the Perilya Broken Hill Mine, and details one of the recent optimisation studies conducted using mathematical modelling and simulation tools. The optimisation study consisted of surveys of the lead and zinc circuits, mapping of the floatability components of the ore and developing models of the lead and zinc circuits. The models were then used to conduct simulations to simplify the circuit. The study allowed plant personnel to identify optimum operating conditions for their current flotation cells, as well as possible improvements in circuit configuration and cell capacity.

Since 1950 Stockton Open Cast Mine has excavated over 60 million tonnes of Brunner Coal Measures overburden sandstones and mudstones. The current operator, Solid Energy New Zealand, recognises that acidic drainage from this overburden and from historic underground mines has led to depressed pH levels and elevated levels of metals in streams draining the Stockton Plateau. These streams report to the Ngakawau River. To quantify the effects of mine site acid drainage remediation/mitigation on the lower Ngakawau River water quality, a catchment hydrogeochemical model has been field calibrated and ecotoxicology tests have been undertaken. The hydrogeochemical model indicates that pre-mining and present pH values in the lower Ngakawau River are similar but present aluminium and iron concentrations are elevated. Ecotoxicology tests have semi-quantified the critical metal concentrations and interim water quality targets to achieve ecological recovery are presented. Analyses of long-term total suspended solids (TSS) and turbidity monitoring in the lower Ngakawau River and St Patrick's Stream indicate that TSS of 120 mg/L and turbidity of 20 NTU are exceeded for <20% per cent of the time. Hence, specific criteria to protect migratory native fish from turbid water are currently met in the Ngakawau River and St Patrick's Stream.

Post-tertiary training programmes have been designed and produced for geologists at different levels of understanding and expertise in the relationship between gold mineralization and shear zones. A workshop format was used as it allowed both clients and facilitators to participate in the learning process. Evaluation by facilitators and participants refined the workshop programme as an effective skills oriented learning process. The general observation is that post-tertiary training in small, interactive, practical, learning oriented groups is far better than lecture oriented short courses for developing skills based learning. The evaluation indicates that the process in post-tertiary training must include aspects which are both useful and used.

The Masbate gold deposits are situated on the island of Masbate, 350 km south of Manila. A new plant was commissioned in April 2009. The grinding circuit consists of one semi-autogenous (SAG) mill Ø9.75 m × 4.27 m, two ball mills Ø5.6 m × 7.1 m and a pebble crushing circuit, which is usually called a SAG-ball mill-crusher configuration. The SAG mill was originally equipped with radial pulp lifters. The mill runs at fixed speed of 10.9 rev/min, which is approximately 80 per cent of critical speed (per cent CS). Due to the high speed of the mill the original radial design pulp lifters presented a high volume of recirculating load inside the chamber and consequently heavy wear on the outer circle (bottom pan).In order to address the high wear on the pulp lifters a number of avenues were considered in early 2011. The chosen solution was to change the geometry of pulp lifters from radial to curved design. The pre-existing drilling pattern on the discharge end of the mill was a major constraint. A number of designs were considered. The selection of the most suitable option was to be made based on 3D discrete element modelling (DEM) and smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations.The original radial design and two potential solutions for curved pulp lifters were simulated with 3D DEM and SPH software. The main three objectives were predicting the charge dynamics, the expected wear patterns and discharge efficiency. One of the solutions was chosen and implemented during 2012.Observations carried on after installation of the curved pulp lifters have confirmed, as expected, a reduction in wear intensity on the outer pulp lifters. In addition to this, at early stages of operation with curved pulp lifters, the mill operator noticed a reduction in energy consumed by the mill with no detrimental effect on mill performance.This paper is intended to further study the effect of curved pulp lifters on mill energy consumption.CITATION:Ciutina, S and Soriano, R J, 2014. The Cawse nickel-cobalt operation is situated 50 km NW of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, at latitude30o22'30'' south and longitude 121o08'30'' east on the Kalgoorlie 1:250 000 geological map sheet (SH 51-9) (see Figure 1). The project is owned and operated by Centaur Nickel Pty Ltd (CTR) and was the first in Australia to commercially produce nickel metal and cobalt sulphide through pressure acid leach (PAL) technology. Cawse has a total resource base (all categories of resources + reserves) of 213 million tonnes Mt at 0.7 per cent Ni and 0.04 per cent Co, comprising 127 Mt at Cawse Central which is 100 per cent owned by CTR and 86 Mt at Cawse Extended where CTR has a 80 per cent equity. Cawse Extended is located immediately to the northwest of the Cawse Central leases. All current reserves (proved and probable) of 30 Mt at 1.0 per cent nickel are contained within Cawse Central. In addition the Siberia project area 20 kilometres to the NW has a resource of 63 Mt at 0.7 per cent Ni. Cawse is a dry laterite deposit, with nickel and cobalt hosted by iron and manganese oxides. Cawse Central mineralisation extends over a ten kilometre strike length, with three pits currently being mined. The Bunyip pit has the premier nickel and cobalt grades within Cawse Central. There are seven dominant lithology types forming mappable units within current pit exposures. Four of these units are host to nickel and cobalt mineralisation. Ore types are defined as Upgrade, Grind and Non-upgrade, depending on their physical characteristics with respect to the treatment route. Mining commenced in February 1998. To the end of calender 1999 the operation has produced 2100 tonnes nickel plate and 470 tonnes of cobalt as a cobalt sulphide product. Future production will target 9000 tonnes per annum Ni metal and up to 2000 tonnes per annum Co, based on processing 500 000 tonnes of ore per annum.

From time to time efforts have been made to classify rocks according to their hardness, toughness and abrasiveness, and to use these classifications to provide an indication of the ease or difficulty with which they may be drilled. However, rocks classified as of similar type on this basis may vary considerably in their .resistance to the penetration of a rock drill bit due to differences in their physical state.For instance, fine grained rocks of granular texture are more difficult to drill than equivalent' rocks of coarser structure, altered rocks drill more readily than unaltered ones, and silicified rocks usually exceedingly hard and tough may be so shattered by movement as to be drilled at a rate comparable to quite soft rocks. The McPhee Creek bedded iron deposit is a recent discovery made by Giralia Resources NL (Giralia) in the northern Pilbara of Western Australia. The deposit lies 30 km north of the town of Nullagine along the southeastern margin of the East Pilbara Granite-Greenstone Terrane (EPGGT).The McPhee Creek area is located in the Kelly Greenstone Belt in the southeastern part of the EPGGT. The Archaean aged greenstone belt consists of volcanic and sedimentary sequences including the Warrawoona Group and the Gorge Creek Group. The McPhee Creek iron ore deposit lies within banded iron formation (BIF) rocks of the Gorge Creek Group. The structure of the McPhee Creek area is dominated by a northeast trending, upright synform (Sandy Creek Syncline) and associated folding that is truncated by northeast trending faults in the east. Iron ore mineralisation is predominantly stratabound and follows the dip of the bedding – however, in some areas, particularly in the southwest of the deposit, mapped steep to moderate dips of bedding planes are at odds with underlying fl at mineralised zones in drill sections. Zones within the deposit that contain substantial thickness of iron ore correspond to areas of complex folding suggesting structural control and iron enrichment in fold hinges. Petrographic analyses confirm mineralisation is goethite dominant and the deposit is strongly supergene enriched.Giralia initially identified iron ore potential in the McPhee Creek area through the presence of a small known channel iron deposit (CID) mesa. Giralia began exploration in 2008 by re-drilling a portion of the CID (subsequently named Crescent Moon) and reported a small low-grade Inferred Mineral Resource. Target generation in the wider area utilising Geological Society of Western Australia maps and Ikonos satellite images identifi ed strongly ferruginous outcrops associated with major structures along an 8 km long range located 2.5 km to the west north-west of the Crescent Moon CID deposit. In late July 2008, a total of 62 rock chip samples were collected during a helicopter supported sampling program conducted at McPhee Creek. Samples taken from haematite-goethite enriched BIF and canga zones outcropping intermittently over the 8 km length of the western and central areas of the prominent range assayed up to 63 per cent Fe. These zones represent the discovery outcrops and surface expression of the McPhee Creek main range iron ore deposit.Follow up sampling, geological mapping, bulldozing of access tracks and ramps and reverse circulation (RC) drilling commenced in September 2009. A maiden Inferred Mineral Resource was announced by Giralia to the Australasian Securities Exchange (ASX) on 15 December 2009.The current Indicated and Inferred Mineral Resource at December 2010 stands at 260 Mt grading 56.2 per cent Fe, 0.12 per cent P, 6.7 per cent SiO2, 2.3 per cent Al2O3 and 9.5 per cent LOI at a 50 per cent Fe cut-off. McPhee Creek is one of the largest iron deposits found in Archaean BIF in the northern Pilbara.

In 1953, Dr. N. H. Fisher of the Bureau of Mineral Resources, acting on behalf of the Society of Economic Geologists, which is considering the sponsoring of a uniform system of nomenclature for ore reserves, enquired from the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy whether it had ever considered this subject and particularly whether it had ever set up any standard definitions or specifications with regard to ore reserves.As this had not been done, but was thought to be desirable, the Council of the Institute appointed a Committee consisting of H. H. Dunkin, Associate, Professor of Mining Engineering, University of Melbourne (Convenor), E. A. Rudd, Professor of Economic Geology, University of Adelaide, I. N. Campbell, Chief Geologist of Western Mining Corporation; and the writer to consider and report on this supject.In December 1953, the Committee submitted its first report to the council and this report (reproduced here as an Appendix) was widely circulated among member companies, and engineers, with an invitation to comment on the proposal. A large number of, replies was received and studied.After studying the replies the Committee issued a second report in part as follows:-From these replies we have learned that the suggestions made in the first teport of the Committee are unacceptable to most of those interested, on one or all, of the following grounds;-(a) number of categories,(b) definition of categories;(c) nomenclature.

Gold miners have been underperforming the price of gold for a number of years. So why has the æmarketÆ undervalued our gold miners relative to what they have been mining? The low valuation ascribed to gold mining companies is largely attributable to their profit performance. In the period since 2006 the price of gold in A$ has risen about $900/oz, but the real cash margin (operating cash costs + cost of finding and/or acquiring deposits + the cost of bringing them into production) has only risen about A$100. Rising operating costs are a major part of this reduction in real margin. Energy and labour costs have risen more than the inflation rates across a number of countries as have taxes, royalties, etc. There are however, more significant contributors to the rising cost base. Firstly, in 2006 the average gold grade was 2.0 g/t; today it is 1.3 g/t. Secondly, strip ratios (for surface mines) have increased by 19 per cent during this time. Open cut mining equipment unit output across the world has dropped by 26 per cent during 2006 - 2012. Finally, costs have risen by 55 per cent during this time period. Consequently, there is now 3.8 times more mining cost required to produce an ounce of gold from surface mines compared with 2006. The decline in gold grade looks to be a permanent trend as does increasing strip ratio if output is to be maintained. Costs will continue to rise although cost control will be necessary. Reversing the decline in equipment performance and closing the gap between median and best practice provides the hope for a sustainable reversal of cost increases. The current gap between best practice and median performance has grown to 112 per cent for mining trucks, 168 per cent for excavators and 169 per cent for front end loaders. Closing this gap is the potential for a more profitable future. For most gold mining companies improving mining efficiency is not an option; it is an imperative.CITATION:Lumley, G, 2013.
