The steady-state creep behavior, in compression, of indium containing a dispersion of atomized glass particles was studzed over a range of temperature, stress, and composition. The observed behavior was not consistent with a simple model of dislocation climb over dispersed particles. From room temperature to about 100°C the temperature dependence could be described by an activation energy about one and a half times that of self-dijfusion in indium while at higher temperatures a much higher ternperature dependence was observed. THE value of dispersion-hardened and precipitation-hardened alloys has long been recognized. The mechanism of hardening, however, is not completely understood, especially at elevated temperatures where dispersed particles increase creep resistance. Following the suggestion of Schoeck1 that the rate of creep in dispersion-hardened materials is controlled by dislocation climb over second-phase particles, Ansel and weertman2 derived steady-state creep equations for dispersion-hardened materials. Their derivation was based on dislocation climb over non-deformable spherical particles in a metallic matrix. For low stresses they predicted a linear relation between applied stress and steady-state creep rate. For stresses large enough to cause dislocations to pinch off around the precipitate particles, the theoretical creep rate was shown to be proportional to the fourth power of stress. For very high stresses an exponential stress dependence was predicted. In all cases the theoretical creep rate is linearly proportional to the diffusion coefficient. This provided the primary temperature-dependent factor. Subsequently, Ansel and Lenel3 reported some experimental data on SAP, a composite of aluminum and aluminum oxide, that was in good qualitative agreement with the above theories. Their experimental creep rates, however, were four orders of magnitude less than the theory predicts. This was attributed to a low density of active dislocation sources in the material; somehow the dispersed particles inactivated the dislocation sources instead of merely interferring with dislocation motion. Meyers and sherby4 have recently reported on the creep behavior of SAP. Their results were inconsistent with a simple dispersion-strengthening model and led them to conclude that a continuous network of oxide controls the high-temperature mechanical characteristics of SAP. Because of the rather complex mechanical behavior of SAP and the lack of agreement about the morphology of its oxide phase, it appeared desirable to study the creep of a dispersion-strengthened material of controlled morphology. For the present work a dispersion of spherical glass particles imbedded in a matrix of indium was chosen. The microstructure of this material was similar to the idealized uniform dispersion of hard spheres in a deforming matrix assumed by Ansel and Weertman in their theoretical treatment. SPECIMEN PREPARATION For experimental convenience, it was decided to use a low melting-point metal in this investigation. It was necessary that the metal not be oxidized readily up to its melting temperature and that it wet the second-phase particles. It was desired that the material chosen for the dispersed phase be available as a fine powder with closely controlled size and shape. The material chosen to satisfy these requirements consisted of a matrix of indium metal containing a dispersion of atomized particles of a soft soda-lime-silica glass ranging from 5 to 30 µ in diam. The glass particles had a highly regular spherical shape. The composite was made by stirring the glass powder into liquid indium maintained at a temperature just above the melting point of indium, 156°C. The creep specimens were prepared by a hot pressing operation. Five to ten g of the mixture were placed in a steel die and pressed at 125°C for 5 min under a pressure of 30,000 psi. The resulting specimens were cylinders about 3/8 in. in diam and ranged from 0.4 to 0.7 in. high. By following this procedure a uniform dispersion was obtained in the creep specimens. Typical microstructures of specimens containing twenty and forty volume percent glass powder are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Unfortunately, grain size could not be determined by the metallo-graphic techniques used. CREEP TESTING PROCEDURE Creep tests were performed in compression under constant stress. CAPTAIN JOHN H. BALLAMY John H. Ballamy, Captain on the Regimental Staff of the 103d Engineers, was killed near Fismes, on August 9, 1918. Captain Ballamy was born at Plymouth, Pa., in 1886 and graduated from the High School of that town in 1903. In the following year he began work as a coal miner, and at the same time began the study of mining engineering in the evening and any other spare time. He continued this diligent and energetic practice for many years. For sixteen years he continued in the employment of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad Company's coal mining department, first as a practical miner, next as rodman on the survey corps, of which he soon became chief, then draftsman and mining engineer in the company's office. In January, 1916, he was promoted to the position of district engineer in charge of mining engineering work. He became a member of this Institute in September, 1917. CAPTAIN JOHN H BALLAMY. Captain Ballamy's military experience began at the same time as his engineering practice. He was a charter member of Company A, Engineers, N. G. P., which was organized ten years ago. He saw service on the Mexican border as First Lieutenant of this Company, and remained in that position until November, 1916. In July, 1917, he was again called into service and was sent to Camp Hancock, Ga., with the 103d Regiment of Engineers. Before joining this regiment he attended a school for officers at Fort Sill, Okla., where he received special training in field fortifications. In December, 1917, he was commissioned Topographical Captain on the Regimental Staff, and in April, 1918, preceded his regiment by about six weeks to France, where he again attended an officers' training school. He rejoined his regiment on July 15, near Chateau Thierry and was killed near Fismes on August 9, 1918.

The highest compressive strength cement has the highest bond strength in tests in which the cement is subjected to a confining pressure. After perforating, the bond strength is reduced to nearly zero when the pipe is supported by weak cement. Perforating does not affect the bond strength, however, when the pipe is supported by strong cement. Pipe supported by weak cement is damaged by perforating with expendable capsule jets, but is not damaged by perforating with the hollow carrier gun. High strength cements are recommended for oil wells that are to be perforated. Introduction The purpose of this work is to determine the effect of jet perforating on the bonding strength of oilwell cement at simulated down-hole conditions. Bond strength is a good criterion for determining the effectiveness of cement in performing its main function, i.e., that of isolating zones. According to the literature on the subject, the optimum cement strength for perforating is low and should not exceed 2,000 psi compressive strength. This conclusion was based on the appearance of bullet and jet perforations in neat and gel cements largely done in the absence of a confining pressure more than 15 years ago. Discussion Literature A relatively weak cement has been recommended in the literature as having optimum properties for perforating. In 1947, Oliphant and Farris tested bullet perforating of neat cements at various curing times.' Some of the tests were made at down-hole conditions. They reported that the optimum cement strength for perforating was about 2,000 psi compressive strength. Enlarged holes occurred when strength was too low, and the cement shattered and cracked when the strength was too high. In 1951, Morgan and Dumbauld tested bullet and jet perforating of neat and gel cements at surface conditions.' They reported that optimum cement has a compressive strength less than 2,000 psi. In their tests at atmospheric pressure, high strength cement shattered and cracked when perforated. Thus, the optimum cement strength was based on the appearance of neat and gel cement after perforating. In 1953, Clark showed a relation between cement strength and fluid shutoff.' He concluded that a 500 psi compressive strength is required for good fluid shutoff and that maximum bonding ability is developed at approximately 1,000 psi compressive strength. In 1964, Bell and Shore invalidated most of the conclu sions by the previous authors when they demonstrated that atmospheric pressure tests cannot be used to determine casing deformation and damage that will result from perforating under down-hole conditions.' They showed that the higher the hydrostatic pressure, the more restricted will be the expansion of gases generated by the charge. Less casing deformation and damage occurs under down-hole conditions than at atmospheric pressure. In recent work, Bearden et al. reported that jet perforating at surface pressure with the hollow carrier gun caused the cement sheath to shatter and crack.' The perforating, however, did not seriously affect the pressure required to leak past the casing cement bond. Only three cementing mixtures were tested, and presumably they had strengths in excess of 2.000 psi. Bearden et al. also reported that the hydraulic bonding strength increased as the compressive strength increased. Their hydraulic test showed that approximately 1,000 psi pressure is sufficient to break the casing cement bond for a well aged neat Portland cement sheath. Unfortunately, the tests were not run with a confining pressure, so Bearden et al. were merely measuring the strength of their outer 8%-in. casing. In our investigation, we measured the hydraulic bond strength of cement to pipe under a confining pressure and found that the bond strength was not limited to 1,000 psi. Cement Bond The bond strength is a good criterion for measuring the effectiveness of cement in performing its main function, that of preventing interzonal communication of fluids behind the casing. Measuring bond strength after perforating should be a good quantitative method of determining optimum cement properties, and should be a better method than that used by previous investigators,11 ' who simply observed the appearance of the cement after perforating.

MANY members of the Institute, who participated in the visit made, during the Bethlehem meeting of February, 1906, to the shops of the Ingersoll-Rand Company, at Phillipsburg, N. J., inspected with interest the new Electric-Air drill, which the company had set up for the purpose of showing it in actual operation to American. mining engineers. At the request of the Secretary of the Institute, I promised at that time to prepare a paper for our Transactions, describing the construction and advantages of the machine. But such a paper would then necessarily have contained much that was only expected or claimed by the designers and manufacturers of the drill, and not yet incontrovertibly proved by varied and long-continued practice. However moderate such statements might have been, they would have given inevitably to the paper, to some extent at least, the air of a prospectus, rather than of a technical contribution. I therefore decided, with the Secretary's approval, to postpone the writing of the promised paper until it could set forth the results of adequate actual practice, as well as the latest details of construction, etc., based upon practical experience. That period has now arrived. The Electric-Air drill has been exhaustively tested in the field, under varied and arduous conditions and upon the hardest rocks. It is now fairly in the field; its merits and performances are matters of unimpeachable record, and its place among established competitors can be definitely determined. AFTER all the chronology that has been given, what is the present status of chromium steels? For the purpose of this discussion the different types of chromium steels can be divided into three classifications-those containing relatively low , percentages of chromium, say 5 per cent or less; the medium-chromium steels containing up to about 18 or 19 per cent chromium; and the steels containing still higher percentages of chromium, and some of the special alloys. Chromium has some unique effects in steel, so it is well to make a few generalizations. The affinity of chromium for carbon is great and the metal is unique in the manger in which it supplements and enhances the effects of carbon. Chromium retards -considerably the thermal transformations on cooling and exerts an opposing influence both on the absorption and precipitation of the carbides in steel. These statements make it easy to understand the fact that chromium .steels are capable of producing a hardened product at a much slower rate of cooling than is, true of plain carbon steel, and that chromium carbide or -the mixed carbides of iron and chromium do not contribute to brittleness to as great a degree as does iron carbide.

The fact that many millions of gold have been extracted by the cyanide process, during the last five or six years, from South African tailings which could not be profitably worked by any other method previously tried upon them, lends a peculiar practical interest to this branch' of metallurgy. Numerous writers have recently made valuable contributions on the process without exhausting the many complexities of the subject. Among the first American writers on the subject in its modern aspect were two former students of the University of California, Mr. Louis Janin, Jr., and Mr. Charles Butters. Young Janin was one of the first to enter this field, and performed much useful experimental work in the early stages of the history of the process. At about the same time, Mr. Charles Butters, who had left California to erect chlorination works for the Robinson mine at Johannesburg, became interested in the cyanide process, and, after getting the chlorination plant in working order, put up, for working the tailings from the Robinson mine, a cyanide plant which achieved the first large-scale success ever made with this process. The papers which Charles Butters, together with John E. Clennell and Edgar Smart, have contributed on the chemistry of the process, were among the first to give any adequate idea of its nature.* Another important contribution to the literature of the subject is the paper of Dr. A. Scheidell, published in 1894 as a " Bulletin of the California State Mining Bureau." This contains an admirable summary of the state of the art at the time of its publication.

A physical law, governing the rupture of rock by confined explosive charge correspondent to current expressions for determining weight of charge to rupture rock burden, W, was developed in the form Q = cVw3 by two early investigators performing unique experiments with ice. The coefficient C, is found by trial blast. Recent physical tests conducted with rock, synthetic materials and ice to establish the validity of the theory on which it and other related formulae are based indicated: (a) that failure under hydrodynamic impact pressure is by tension rather than shear as was assumed; (b) that the fundamental law of mechanics, enabling the determination of Q = cvw3, modified to the form P = R x Sa x Wb is valid when low velocity explosives are used; (c) that rock breakage under the action of low velocity explosives is entirely due to explosion gas pressure, as was believed; (d) that under the action of high velocity explosive it is due to the joint effects of scabbing and gas pressure; and that further possible modification could make the above equation also applicable to these joint mechanisms. shape could be easily frozen and because large loads would not be required. They found: (a) that the not unfamiliar shearing equation for metals was applicable to ice where P = load in lb; S = periphery of pressure surface, in.; W = burden, in.; K = modulus of rupture by shear in lb per in.2; and (b) that "the form of cavity produced by the application of gradual pressure is similar to that obtained by blasting in rock under similar conditions of free face and pressure surface!" This similarity in crater shapes leads to the conclusion that rock would rupture by shear, as did ice, and its behavior under the force of a blast could be governed by such a relationship as P = S x W x K. Three important interrelated empirical expressions were derived and rock, charging and spacing coefficients C,, C, and e were established and substantiated by trial blasts. In checking the accuracy of the main assumptions, duplication of the ice tests, substituting rock, suggested that K is not constant and that P = K x W x S, though valid for ice, does not necessarily hold for homogeneous limestone.' Conclusions from this later work raised questions making continued investigation desirable because such conclusions do not destroy the practical value of the empirical equations or theory. Further study for the establishment of the relationship between load, burden and periphery of the pressure surface and possible application of these to the mechanism of rock blasting was undertaken by the authors of this paper. MECHANICAL TESTING - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Certain inconsistencies in the results of the aforementioned tests repeated on three types of limestone suggested these inconsistencies be attributed to rock inhomogeneity. The effect of neutron bombardment upon the stability of type 347 austenitic stainless steel has been investigated by a magnetic technique. The relation of the ferrite content of a stainless steel to its magnetic properties is given, and an apparatus suitable for the measurement of the ferromagnetic saturation induction of small specimens is described. Results of measurements on irradiated specimens are tabulated. Exposure to a neutron flux was found to cause a slight increase in the ferrite content of type 347 stainless steel, the change increasing with increasing length of exposure and with increasing initial ferrite content. The similarity of the effect of irradiation to the effect of annealing is pointed out. Possible effect of irradiation upon density of austenitic stainless steel is discussed. COMMERCIAL austenitic stainless steels are alloys of iron, chromium, and nickel, plus small quantities of other elements. Although these alloys are normally used in the austenitic condition, this state is thermodynamically metastable at ordinary temperatures and transformation to a more stable state takes place under favorable conditions. In the austenitic state, these stainless steels have the face-centered-cubic crystal structure characteristic of y iron, but the stable state at room temperature is a mixture of austenite and body-centered-cubic ferrite. The transformation from the pure austenitic condition may be brought about by cold working the alloy at a temperature below that at which the aus- tenite becomes thermodynamically unstable (about 400°C), the completeness of transformation increasing with increasing severity of cold work and decreasing temperature. The behavior of the austenitic stainless steels under ordinary conditions of use is rather well known. However, use of these alloys in a nuclear reactor introduces a new variable: the effect of neutron bombardment upon the transformation from the austenitic to the ferritic state. It was with this in mind that a study of the radiation stability of austenitic type 347 stainless steel was undertaken. Magnetic Technique for Ferrite Determination Commercial austenitic stainless steels such as type 347 undergo little transformation under normal conditions of fabrication and use. In view of this fact, it seemed likely that neutron irradiation would change the ferrite content of the alloy but little. The method chosen for measurement of the effect of neutron irradiation was thus limited to one which would be quite sensitive to small changes in the ferrite content of the alloy. Of the properties of the stainless steel which can be measured, the magnetic characteristics are most sensitive to the quantity of ferrite present.

STUDIES of ground movement and subsidence resulting from mining operations cover a broad field. It is also a very important consideration and one that eventually affects nearly every mining operation of any extent. The damage to surface buildings, removal of mine surface plants and replacements of main hoisting shafts must reach an astounding expenditure were these cost figures available over a period of years. Were the subject one of mathematical formula and dependent only on the angle of draw of the walls or country rocks, the problem would be relatively simple. Consideration must be given to depth and extent of workings; structural conditions of the orebodies and enclosing country rock; physical properties of these same rocks, including schistosity, bedding, jointing, slips, dikes, faults, and other structural weaknesses. The method of mining, extent of openings, supporting pillars, and amount of moisture or water underground are other pertinent factors. With such a large number of variable factors, it is apparent that the subject of subsidence is one that must be based largely on experience and results at other mines where conditions are somewhat comparable. In presenting this paper, it is the intent to describe the progressive results of past ground movements at the United Verde, to bring out physical conditions largely responsible for this movement, but to refrain from theorizing on the ultimate extent of subsidence resulting from future mining operations.

THE Montana Phosphate Products Co., subsidiary of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, operates three phosphate properties north and northeast of Garrison, Powell County, Mont. Production of all three is from the same phosphate bed, a 3 to 4-ft. member of the Phosphoria formation, whose outcrop is traceable across the mountains of the Garnet Range in a series of southeasterly pitching folds. Because of topographical differences and of variations in the attitude of the bed, each property has its own mining methods and problems. Most of the phosphate rock produced since I930 has been shipped to the plant of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. at Trail, B.C., where it is treated with sulphuric acid for conversion to phosphoric acid, which in turn is used to produce various fertilizers. HISTORY The occurrence of rock phosphate in Montana has been known. since 1910, and the Garrison area was mapped by the United States Geological Survey in 1913In the nineteen twenties William Anderson, owner of a ranch 8 miles north of Garrison, discovered phosphate on his land, and the Montana Phosphate Co., which later became the Montana Phosphate Products Co., was formed to work the deposit. Montana Phosphate Products Co. later obtained United States leases on two adjoining parcels of ground, and this combined property, known as the Anderson mine, has been the main source of Consolidated's phosphate rock. The mine now includes an adjoining parcel leased from Anaconda and mined from the Anderson workings. In 1940, the Graveley mine, a small privately owned property 6 miles east of the Anderson, was leased from the owner by Montana Phosphate Products Co., and a U. S. lease held by Graveley on some adjoining ground was subleased. In 1943 the Luke mine, on the Mineral Hill property, 1 ¾ miles south-southwest of the Graveley, a U. S. lease, which previously had produced a few thousand tons, was optioned from the lessees by Montana Phosphate Products Co., and is now being developed. At both these mines the rock is appreciably higher grade than at the Anderson mine. GEOLOGY The Phosphoria formation is the Permian member of an extensive sequence of Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks. It is underlain by Pennsylvanian (Quadrant) quartzite and Mississippian limestone, and overlain without any marked unconformity by Jurassic (Ellis) shale and Cretaceous shale and sandstone. In the Garrison area, the Phosphoria itself consists mainly of about 50 ft. Of gray to yellow chert. Immediately below the chert is the phosphate, usually 3 to 4 ft. thick. President Allende says he will expropriate all American investments in Chile and he's already well on the way to accomplishing this objective. What the average observer doesn't realize is that this has not only created big lossess for the copper companies. It could also take a chunk out of the U.S. taxpayers' pockets. Premier Castro expropriated the U.S. taxpayers' investment of over $100 million in the Nicaro (Cuba) nickel and cobalt operations-and U.S. Government protest over the loss was never heard above a whisper. Where the taxpayer comes in today is through the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, which was set up to guarantee U.S. companies' foreign investments against losses due to political changes. As of now, metals firms hold more than $300 million worth of obligations against this U.S. Government agency. The agency itself may not be able to raise more than $85 million, and a supplemental appropriation may be needed to meet its guarantees.

THOUGH the dust-control systems in the crushing plants and other buildings at Morenci do not differ materially from similar installations in other large copper reduction works, it is probable that in few other plants has as much attention been paid to the dust problem. Possibly the most striking feature of the Morenci installation is the manner in which the necessary equipment has been built into the various structures, and the absence of unsightly pipes, ducts, and fan houses. That this result has been attained is due, in no small part, to the basic conception that the control of the dust in a milling plant should be an essential part of the process itself and not something to be tacked on later after the plant is in operation. The control systems were designed and developed along with the general plant construction program and when the first car of ore was dumped into the crusher the dust-control equipment was ready.

The anisotropic elastic behavior of rolled beryllium sheet has been measured, using a pulse echo technique, and compared with X-ray diffraction data. Calculated elastic stiffness constants compared favorably with published values for beryllium single crystals which were attributed to the strong (0002) rolling plane texture. Variations of Young's modulus in the yolling plane could be associated with the velative distribution of (0002) planes out of their ideal position in the rollitzg pkule. WHEN a metal is subjected to cold working such as drawing, forming, or rolling, a crystallographic texture develops which can significantly alter its physical properties. One method for detecting this texture is X-ray diffraction, but Alers and Liu' have recently pointed out how the prediction of anisotropic physical properties from pole figures alone is not always accurate due to differences in interpretation. Variations in Young's modulus with orientation or, more completely, the values of the effective elastic constants of the worked metal, also serve to indicate the presence of a texture. In fact, as Alers and Liu' pointed out, calculated variations in Young's modulus for assumed orientations, when compared with experimental data, can be used to eliminate some of the uncertainty in interpretation of X-ray pole figures. Thus, elasticity measurements can serve not only to clarify any unusual elastic behavior of worked metal, but also to detect and in part determine the nature of its texture. X-ray determination of the texture of rolled beryllium has been reported by Smigelskas and Barrett,2 who found a strong texture of (0002) in the rolling plane with (1070) planes normal to the rolling direction. In the case of metal rolled at room temperature, they reported that [1010] directions also appeared at positions 60 and 120 deg from the rolling direction in the rolling plane, while in more recent work Keeler3 found these directions were also tilted towards the rolling plane. The texture for beryllium rolled at 80O0C, however, only showed (1010) planes normal to the rolling direction and the spread of (0002) planes out of the rolling plane was less. In looking for elastic anisotropy one might consider unidirectional rolling of a metal as introducing an or-thorhombic symmetry through reorientation of the grains, since the three deformations, compression, extension in the rolling direction, and extension in the cross direction, are orthogonal to each other and unequal in magnitude. Thus the rolled sheet could be treated like an orthorhombic single crystal and the nine stiffness constants of the elasticity tensor used to calculate the anisotropy of Young's modulus, the shear modulus and Poisson's ratio. In this case we could write: which is symmetric about its diagonal. Borik and Alers4 have recently used this approach on rolled die steel with very good results. They found, however, that instead of displaying orthorhombic elastic symmetry their specimens could be considered tetragonal in which case Cr1 = c22, c13 = Ca, and c44 =cjj. This conclusion was made solely on the basis of the measured tensor elements, and serves to point out the advantage of this method for studying the anisotropy of rolled metals. Their calculated values for Young's modulus as a function of angle in the rolling plane also checked very well with direct measurements made on different specimens using the resonance technique. In the present study, cross-rolled beryllium was used which had been unidirectionally rolled about 11 pct for the final reduction. This imparted a slight anisotropy in the rolling plane which was detected both by X-ray techniques and elasticity measurements. For purposes of discussion in this paper, the rolling direction is that direction in which the most reduction passes were made and cross direction is the normal to the rolling direction in the rolling plane. It was also decided to consider the rolled sheet as displaying orthorhombic symmetry for the purpose of obtaining elasticity samples with the direction defined as in Table I. Any change in the final symmetry attributed to the sheet would then be made on the basis of the measured elastic stiffnesses. The final data would then be compared with that expected from the X-ray study and that reported for beryllium single crystals. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Rolling Schedule. The samples used in this study were taken from a large sheet which, because of its size, had to be unidirectionally rolled for the final reduction. The resulting texture was that of cross-rolled metal with a slight unidirectional texture superimposed. A cast beryllium ingot, 9.500 in. sq by 3.325 in. thick, was cross-rolled to 81 pct reduction followed by unidirectional rolling for an additional 11 pct to give a total reduction of 92 pct. The thickness of the final sheet ranged from 0.265 to 0.280 in. Reduction up to 67 pct was done at 980°C and the final 25 pct at 870°C. Analysis for metallic impurities showed aluminum 0.06 pct, iron 0.19 pct, and silicon 0.11 pct, giving a beryllium purity of 99.64 pct.
