With the postwar emergency for new housing and for new industrial buildings, much research has been done on lightweight aggregates for use in concrete and plaster. The trend toward lighter weight aggregates to relieve the dead load on the higher, steel frame- work buildings started toward the end of the last century. Progressively the requirements be- came more stringent, crushed bank slag, weighing 80 lb per cu ft as com- pared to 100 lb for crushed rock, was supplemented in some sections by foamed slags and expanded shales weighing from 40 to 60 lb per cu ft. In other sections cinders were used weighing from 40 to 50 lb, including sand. Sections favored with more recent vulcanism turned to pumice weighing from 30 to 60 lb, whereas other localities made use of diatomite, from 28 to 40 lb. Exfoliated vermiculite weighing from only 6 to 10 lb per cu ft came into use. As the search for lighter weights in aggregates continued so did the search for other desirable properties such as nailability, ease of cutting or channeling, and good insulation to both sound and heat. This search eventually led to a widespread interest in the expansion of perlite, or similar volcanic glasses, with the result that in 1946, the Office of the Housing Expediter' listed eleven firms reporting the operation of processing plants either on pilot or commercial scale producing aggregates weighing from 2 to 16 lb per cu ft.

IN the copper industry, the year 1942 was one of striving for larger tonnage and increased production. The demands of the war program placed copper high in the list of strategic metals and the Government encouraged production by offering a premium of 5c. per pound for copper output in excess of the 1941 quotas. This had the effect of increasing the tempo of existing operations and also of initiating a number of projects which will eventually result in production from sources not hitherto exploited. No radically new methods of copper reduction were reported.

MOST important of the various departments of a custom smelter, so far as the financial welfare of the plant and the confidence of shippers are concerned, is that responsible for correct weights, accurate moisture sampling, and the obtaining of control samples that are strictly representative of the lot of ore from which they come. Treatment rate schedules are based on the metal content of ores received, reduced to dry weight. These rates must be low enough to keep the ship- per from taking his business else- where and still must allow the smelter a profit. Assay results, likewise, must satisfy the shipper, but if they show too high a metal content for the ore they represent, the smelter will actually lose money. It is always considered, and constant checks through umpire assays prove, that laboratory results are closely correct, so the bur- den of the plant profit and loss and the satisfaction of the shipper rest squarely upon the sampling department.

THERE was once a time when a practical oil man would appraise or buy a producing property on the basis of from $200 to $500 per barrel of average daily settled production. Curtailment-has, for the present at least, caused a virtual abandonment of the "barrel -of settled production" as a yardstick of, oil property value and in its place has come the "barrel of allowable production," which, although an artificial thing, is nevertheless now the principal factor governing the rate of ?pay out? or investment return. The potential production of a well, settled or otherwise, is of less importance in determining the present worth of a well than is the rate at which it may be produced. Speaking only of true potential for the moment, it is obvious that of two similar wells having the same potential, the one having the highest rate of allowable production would be worth proportionately more than the one of lesser allowable. The discount factor for deferred return and risk can easily vary the present values of the two wells by as much as 20 per cent when allowable rates are not greatly different.

THE method of measurement of surface on quartz particles was given in a previous paper.1 With such a method the relation of surface produced in crushing quartz can be compared to the work in crushing without recourse to sieve sizing or microscopic measurement. In crushing, the work input must be known with a fair degree of accuracy. With crushers, rolls, ball mills, and similar apparatus the measurement of the work in crushing is subject to possible errors, due to friction in .the transmission as well as in the machine itself. Moreover, relatively large quantities of material must be crushed to get an average figure. In the selection of a method of crushing, simplicity in design and operation was desired and this was most readily obtained by the use of a free-falling body. A description of the apparatus embodying this principle is given herewith. THE CRUSHING DEVICE The apparatus used is shown in Fig. 1 and in cross-section in Fig. 2. The material to be crushed is placed in the crushing chamber C in the steel mortar M. The mortar is 3 in. dia. by 3 in. high. Two mortars are used, one having a crushing chamber 1-in. dia. by 1/2 in. deep, with a capacity of 4 g. of quartz, the other having a crushing chamber 1 ½ in. dia. by 3/4 in. deep, with a capacity of 12 g. of quartz. The position of the mortar is adjusted by means of three centering screws A. The steel plunger P, which fits neatly into the chamber, is placed on top of the material to be crushed. Plungers of different lengths were tried and as they were found to give practically identical results the length adopted was equal to the depth of the chamber.

The following propositions and corollaries are intended to present, as concisely as possible, some of the evidences gathered while studying the microstructure of steel. Each proposition is accompanied by photo-micrographs showing the structure of illustrative samples. But it must be understood that the special instances thus chosen for illustration are by no means the only ones on the examination of which the propositions are based. On the contrary, they have been taken almost at random among a great many, in some instances more than a hundred, similar cases. Proposition I. A slow and undisturbed cooling from a temperature x or higher produces crystallization. Plate L, Plate II., Fig. 1, and Plate V., Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 show the crystalline structure of several pieces of steel. Plate I. reveals this structure in the center of a slowly-cooled Bessemer ingot, 1.5 feet from the top. Plate II., Pig. 1, is from a small 2-in, square testingot of the same heat, slowly cooled. Plate V., Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 show the structure of different parts of steel rails. The original photographs were all magnified 70 diameters, and have been reduced in engraving to 63, or to 55 diameters, as shown in the plates. Proposition 11. Undisturbed cooling from an initial temperature lower than x is not accompanied by crystallization. Plate III., Fig. 5, shows the structure of a piece of rail-steel forged from a white heat until it had fallen to dull-red. The structure is almost amorphous. Practically no crystallization has taken place during the subsequent cooling. Corollary.—Pieces of steel finished at a temperature lower than x do not take a crystalline structure.

IN the parlance of Hollywood, it was a super-colossal meeting. In the more restrained language of engineers, the Institute's 75th Anniversary Celebration attracted the largest crowd ever; was the longest Annual Meeting ever held, occupying a full week; had more important papers, more important people, more of an international flavor, and more glamour than ever before. And in the minds of those who came to the big city from the wide open spaces, one other record should be mentioned: for those not on an expense account, it was the most expensive affair ever staged by the Institute! To state the attendance down to the last digit for a meeting such as this is impossible. The total names registered on cards, plus those who attended the Annual Banquet but were not otherwise registered, came to 3149. But a few were registered twice, and probably a still larger few did not register at all, but just dropped in for a session or two in which they were interested. It would appear that 3200 would be about as close an estimate of attendance as could be made, and that is some 300 more than came to the biggest Annual Meeting of the past-in 1944. A considerable number of members brought their wives, but most were delegates at large.

Discussion of the paper of Carl Scholz, published in Bi-monthly Bulletin, No. 22, July, 1908, pp. 551 to 559. HOWARD N. EAVENSON, Gary, W. Va. (communication to the Secretary*) :-For some time before the publication of Mr. Scholz's paper, I had been collecting data bearing upon its subject, and I now take pleasure in presenting my results to the Institute in the form of a discussion. It has long been a matter of common opinion among mining-men that mice-explosions are, more frequent during the colder, or winter months, than during the warmer ones, and it is a matter of common knowledge among them that the air-ways and road-ways in most mines are much drier and are more in¬clined to be dusty during the winter than during the summer. In many mines, places which are wet and sloppy in the summer are dry and sometimes dusty during the winter. These changes, of course, can only be due to atmospheric conditions, and are caused by differences in temperature and humidity. Until recently, however, very little attention has been paid to the part that atmospheric conditions may play in mine-explosions, or, rather, to the effect they may have in rendering mine-conditions peculiarly dangerous, and in spreading and rendering more disastrous the effects of what would otherwise probably have been .small explosions. To show the difference in mine-conditions during sunnier .and winter months, I have tabulated in Table I. the results of 24 observations of hygrometric conditions in several different mines at different times of the year. Mines Nos. 1, 2, and 6 are located in the Pocahontas.coal -region, in McDowell couuty, W.Va., the first one being a shaft-mine shaft mine and the others drift. Mines 1A and 2A are drift-mines located in Logan county, W. Va. All of these are mines of fair size, but none of them has been in operation more than six years,

Much new data on the flow of gases have been discovered by recent experiments by the United States Bureau of Mines and others. Although additional investigation is still desirable, the information now collected seems sufficient to attempt a tentative coördination of the friction factors. This study is confined entirely to fluid friction when the density throughout the duct is so nearly constant that it may be so considered. In the subsequent discussion the following notation is used: v = mean velocity of fluid in duct, feet per second. v' = mean velocity of fluid in duct, meters per second. R = hydraulic radius of duct, feet. R' = hydraulic radius of duct, meters. S = the hydraulic slope. P = pressure absorbed by friction, pounds per square foot. p = pressure absorbed by friction, pounds per square inch. p' = pressure absorbed by friction, kilograms per square centimeter. The method of characteristics which reduces the Buckley-Leverett mnlineur, partial differential equation to two first-order, linear differential equations is applied to the solution of a waterffood recovery problem for multiple lines of producing wells and one line of injection wells. The application of the method is described by a numerical example, and a brief theoretical background is given. From the results of this study, it is concluded that the cumulative water injected and oil produced are the same for single and multiple sets of producing wells. INTRODUCTION In this paper, the method of characteristics is applied to the solution of a waterflood recovery problem with multiple lines of producing wells and one line of injection wells. The application of the method to this type of recovery problem considerably simplifies the procedure of obtaining a numerical solution. It differs from the method described by Kern1 because it eliminates the need for integration in obtaining saturation fronts. In addition, the saturation history at any location within the field is obtained from a single diagram (time vs distance with saturation as a parameter)'. The paper includes a brief theory of the method of characteristics and its application to the solution of oil recovery problems. A numerical example is worked out, and the cumulative oil recovery-vs-time curve for a system with multiple sets of producing wells is obtained. This curve is then compared with the recovery curve of a system with only one set of producing wells. From this study, it is concluded that the cumulative water injected and oil produced are the same for single and multiple lines of producing wells. However, the recovery time is considerably longer for multiple sets of producing wells.

AN extensive recent trip throughout the mining districts of the Southwest, Central West, an Northwest,' reveals a numbes of interesting conditions that have influenced operators, in both large and small mills, to modify their flow sheets insofar as they pertain to crushing and grinding. The changes made and planned for the future should be of interest. It is interesting to note when traveling through the country, how ideas change and practice is modified, and it is rather amusing to see how milling methods seem to run, more or less, in cycles. New ideas and developments are brought about which run through the industry and are taken up by many of the best and most well informed operators. Some of them will change, sooner or later, back to their old practice; for, like everything .else, what will work well in one place will not necessarily be suited to another. On the other hand, it is often difficult to establish. other practices known to be of value, owing to the natural resistance to make a change, but on the whole, the western mill men seem to be more alive to possible benefits of various modifications than any other engineers with whom I have come in contact in all parts of the world. Mill men in other parts of the world always keep in con- tact with what is being done in the western part of the United States, but it does not necessarily follow that those in the western part of the United States are always right. Some of these changes that have been made and afterward abandoned will be referred to later.

A SPRING meeting is to be held at Cleveland this month under the joint auspices of the Iron and Steel Committee and the Ohio Section with the cooperation of the neighboring sections in Pennsyl-vania, Illinois, and the other States of the Great Lakes region. Estimates indicate that the total reserves of ore in this country suitable for making ferro would hardly supply domestic requirements for ten years, even if it could all be mined in that time. The grade of ore called for by present practice must come from abroad. The present tariff policy of this country is stated to cost industry $8,000,000 in order to force production of manganese ore to the extent of $600,000. What is the wise thing to do? Should a stock be accumulated? If so, how? Is it feasible to change practice and use low-grade ore or to beneficiate the ores of this grade and meet our requirements? What progress is being made in this direction? ,These and similar questions are raised in the various papers that have been submitted and will be open for dis-cussion.

BRASS is an alloy of copper and zinc. The brasses (using this term to denote all useful proportions of the two constituents) are the most valuable and widely employed of all [ ] nonferrous alloys, because of their high resistance to ordinary corrosive agencies and the very wide range of properties that may be imparted to them by variations in the proportions of the constituents and by variations in mechanical treatment and heat-treatment. Fig. I shows the normal physical properties, as determined by standard tensile tests, of the series when in the annealed condition. Fig. 2 shows the effect of varying amounts of cold-working on an almost pure brass containing 70 per cent copper and 30 per cent zinc. Fig. 3 shows the effect of annealing at various temperatures on the same alloy. This effect is somewhat modi [ ] fled by the degree of cold-working to which a brass has been subjected, as shown by Fig. 4. A fourth test, which is empirical, has been found useful because of its simplicity -the hot hammer test. Samples Y2 in. in diameter and ¾ in. long are placed in a suitable furnace. These are withdrawn one at a time at successively higher tempera¬tures and are subjected to the blow of a drop hammer weighing 50 lb. with a drop of 4 ft. LARGE deposits of manganiferous iron ores, representing several million tons of metallic manganese, occur in the United States. The Minnesota deposits of such ore-are of outstanding importance because of their size, state of development, ease of mining and proximity to the Great Lakes, which permits water transportation to steel centers. In' view of the fact that our steel industry requires large quantities of manganese, for which no satisfactory substitute-has been found, and because our reserves of ferro-grade ore are comparatively small, the development of methods that will make our large deposits of manganiferous iron ores available as a source of ferromanganese is an important problem. Realizing the importance of this problem, some years ago the North Central Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Minnesota School of Mines Experiment Station undertook jointly the development of methods for recovering the manganese content of manganiferous iron ores in a: form suitable for the production of ferromanganese, the 80 per cent. alloy indispensable in producing steel. Two types of manganiferous iron ores have been described in previous reports. I The brown ores are higher in iron and lower in manganese than the black ores; the black ores are more siliceous but contain less phosphorus. The utilization of the iron content of the brown ores in the production of steel appears to furnish the best basis for their treat-ment. The method of attack has been to work out modifications in iron and steel practice so as to recover manganese in the form of slag comparable to ferro-grade ores. The greater part of the experimental work has been conducted with a 6-ton blast furnace and a Y2-ton basic open hearth. The origin of the Mine-Rescue Service of the State of Illinois can be traced to two distinct sources, the work of the Rescue Station at Urbana and the Cherry disaster. During the early part of the year 1909, the Technologic Branch of the U. S. Geological Survey, now the Bureau of Mines, in connection with the Illinois Geological Survey and the College of Engineering of the University of Illinois, established at the University of Illinois, in Urbana, a branch rescue-station to supplement the work of the Pittsburg station of the Geological Survey. As a result of the work of training at the station in Urbana by R. Y. Williams, mining engineer, and James Webb, foreman of the Bureau of Mines, and the use of the helmets at several mine-accidents in the State of Illinois, the people of the State were somewhat familiar with oxygen-helmets when the Cherry disaster occurred, in November, 1910. The oxygen-helmets were successfully used in connection with that disaster, and upon the recommendation of the Illinois Mining Investigation Commission, the Legislature of the State, assembled in special session during the winter of 1910, passed a bill appropriating $75,000 for the erection and maintenance of three rescue-stations, stipulating that they should be situated in the northern, central, and southern parts of the State. The Act also provided that the stations should be in charge of a Commission of seven, two representing the United Mine Workers of Illinois, two the mine-operators, one the Federal Bureau of Mines, one the State mine-inspectors, and one the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Illinois. This Commission was called together by the Governor of the State, Aug. 2, 1910, and since that time three stations have been placed, built, and equipped: at La Salle for the northern

THE indexing of a field-ion micrograph is in many cases similar to the indexing of the poles of a stereo-graphic projection.* If one has a standard projection as a guide, the task of indexing is relatively simple. In this way, field-ion micrographs of bcc and fcc wires have been oriented from projections available in most any text on X-ray diffraction. These books always illustrate the projections for the bcc and fcc structures and even for a particular hcp structure. There is no "standard" hcp projection because the angles between planes depend on the c/o ratio of the unit cell. In order to index field-ion micrographs of hcp metals, one must compute the angles between various planes—a rather laborious task. In recent work,, we have had to identify the structure and index the orientation of field-ion micrographs of the compounds WC and W,C. To overcome the problem of computing angles by hand or calculator, a program was written in Fortran lV for use on the IBM 360, Model 50 which will compute all angles between planeswith indices (hlklll) and (17,k,l2) in the range from (447) to (444) for any given c/o ratio. The program, which is more specific than that of Camp and clum, was so written as to take advantage of the multiplicity of the hexagonal system, and, for the limits defined above, only 26,649 values out of a possible 265,721 values had to be computed. This is a 90 pct saving in time (and cost) and was accomplished in the following way. Because the lattice parameters of the hexagonal crystal system are defined such that: a = b * c [1] the I index does not enter into the multiplicity (i.e., it cannot be transposed with the h or k indices), and all possible values of h and I, from 4 to 4 must be used—a total of eighty-one combinations. The index h2 varies the most—it must assume values from - Ill,: to 3Ihl. The indices kl and k2 are always equal and vary
