In these times of sharp rivalry, both as to price and quality, among the makers and venders of engineering explosives, it is often desirable to be able to determine the relative energy or value of the various explosives offered for sale, in order to purchase intelligently ; or, having contracted for a large amount of an explosive of a certain standard quality, to be able to ascertain if the manufacturer keeps his product up to the specified standard. The simple and inexpensive apparatus described below was devised by the writer while engaged on the improvement of the Tennessee River, at MuscleShoals, under the direction of' Major W. R. King, U. S. Engineers, in the summer of 1879. It answered the purpose so well that it is thought that a brief account of it may be of interest to other engineers. It consisted, essentially, of an old blacksmith's anvil and a common striking hammer, such as is used for driving rock-drills. The anvil was placed face downward on solid, level ground. In what was then the top of it, a vertical hole, one and one-fourth inch in diameter and about one arid three-fourths inch deep, was made with a ratchetdrill. The surface of the anvil immediately around the drill-hole was made as true and smooth as possible with a file. Next, a new striking-hammer, weighing nine pounds, with a turned and true face, was selected ; and a handle, eleven feet long and about one and a half inches in diameter, was fitted into it so that it

Rates oj decarburization of levilated Fe-C droplets conlaining 5.5 to 0 pct C have been measured at 1660°C. Gas mixtures of 1, 10, and 100 pct 0, with helium diluenl were used at velocities of 12.5 and 62.5 cm per sec. Rates were independent of carbon concentration in the mell and in good agreement with the calculated rule of oxygen diffusion through the gas boundary layer. The effects of flow rale and total pressure are as predicled and the rates are approxitnalely 2.5 times those with CO2 as oxidant. The mass-transfer correlation used incorporaled the efject of natural convection as well as forced conrection. Graphile spheres are shown to oxidize at the same rate as Fe-C droplets under the same experimental codlions. It is concluded that, for high carbon concentrations in the melt, the rate of- decarburizalion is controlled wholly by the rate of gaseous diffusion. Rate measurements with pure CO, are reported for low carbon concentrations where CO bubbles nucleate within the droplet. Under these circumstances the decarburi-zation decreased with carbon concentration and it is proposed that carbon diffusion is significant in conlrolling the decnvburization rate. In an earlier paper1 decarburization rate measurements were reported for levitated Fe-C alloys at 1660°C but with CO2 as the oxidant. The decarburization rate was found to be independent of carbon concentration in the melt but slightly affected by total pressure. The authors were unable to explain the slight pressure effect but in all other respects the results were consistent with control by diffusion in the gas boundary layer. Subsequent work has been directed at finding the reason for the slight pressure effect and whether the kinetics with oxygen as oxidant parallel those with CO2. Recently Ito and Sano2 have shown that with water vapor-argon atmospheres the decarburization rate is gaseous diffusion controlled until an oxide film appears on the surface. In this work the melts were contained in crucibles. MASS TRANSFER IN THE GAS PHASE In the earlier analysis1 only forced-convection mass transfer was considered. Subsequent recognition of the existence of some free-convection mass transfer explained the observed small effect of total pressure on the decarburization rate. Steinberger and Treybal3 and Kinard, Manning, and Manning4 have developed correlations involving the linear addition of the contribution of radial diffusion, free and forced convection. Steinberger and Treybal&apos;s correlation was chosen as the most applicable to the present work since it correlated most of the data available in the literature and handled the low Reynolds number region exceptionally well. The correlation for (Gr&apos;Sc) < 108 is where Nu&apos; is the Nusselt number for mass transfer based upon the total surface of a sphere in an infinite medium, G&apos; is the mean Grashof number for mass transfer defined by Eq. [2], Sc is the Schmidt number (µ/pDAB)f, Re is the sphere Reynolds number (dpu,pf/µf), p is the viscosity of the gas (poise), p is the density of the gas (g cm-3), Dab is the binary diffusivity for the system A-B (sq cm sec-&apos;), dp is the sphere diameter (cm), u is the approach velocity of the gas (cm sec-I), and subscript f denotes the property value is computed at the film temperature Tf defined by Tf = +1/2(To + Tr) where To is the specimen temperature and T, is the approach gas temperature (oK). Natural convection occurs when inhomogeneities exist in gas density. These may be caused by concentration gradients, temperature gradients, or both. In the present work the temperature gradient between the sphere and the bulk gas was very large and in some cases, for example the runs with pure oxygen, the concentration gradient was also appreciable. The solid state bonding of aluminum to nickel was studied as a function of temperature, pressure, and time at pressure. The initial results indicated that as the reaction conditions were varied, marked changes in tensile strength occurred. Plots of the log penetration coefficient vs the reciprocal of absolute temperature for various isobars were straight lines displaced from each other. THE techniques of bonding different metals to A each other include brazing, welding, welding by application of a molten phase, and solid state welding without any molten phase present. This last technique, the pressing of metals either at room temperature or at some temperature below the melting point of the metals to be joined, seems to offer interesting possibilities for bonding purposes. However, this technique has not been completely investigated, and very little is known about the diffusion phenomena which occur during solid state welding. Some previous work on the effect of pressure on diffusion1 was inconclusive. This paper is concerned with an investigation regarding the effect that the processing variables, such as pressure, temperature, and time at pressure, have in solid state bonding. The tests were made with aluminum and nickel and special emphasis was given to the strength of the bond between these two metals and to the intermetallic penetration rate during the bonding process. It seems that the effect of pressure on the intermetallic penetration is of particular importance for practical purposes and this effect was therefore studied in detail. Procedure Apparatus: The means of solid state bonding used for this study was that of the hot-pressing technique. This method requires the equipment pictured in Fig. 1 and involved the following procedure. The two metals to be bonded were placed in an aquadag lubricated 18-4-1 tool steel die, 16 in. high by 1.440 in. ID, between punches of 1.366 in. diameter made of the same material. A thermocouple

ABOUT a year and a half ago, at the San Francisco meeting of the American Chemical Society, in connection with the excursions to local smelting-works, I had occasion to show some lantern-slides illustrating the recent commercial development of electrical methods for precipitating the suspended matter from smelter-smoke, the underlying phenomena of which were clearly brought to the attention of the technical public by Sir Oliver Lodge as long ago as 1884. In the Journal of industrial and Engineering Chemistry, August, 1911, most of these views were reproduced, together with an account of the work from its beginning up to July, 1911. To-day I wish particularly to show you some of the further developments of the work since that time; but in order to make these clear they will be prefaced by a brief abstract of the article above referred to. The removal of suspended particles, front gases, by the aid of electric discharges is by no means a new idea. As early as 1824 we&apos; find it suggested by Hohlfeld 1 as a means of suppressing ordinary smoke, and again a quarter of a, century later by Guitard.2 These suggestions, which do not seem to have stimulated any practical study of the question, were soon entirely forgotten, and only brought to light again by Sir Oliver Lodge,3 many years after he himself had independently rediscovered the same phenomena and brought them to public attention 4 in a lecture before the Liverpool Section of the So-

Blast-furnace practice in France is determined more or less by the character of the ores used. Some French ores are siliceous and others are calcareous, therefore by proper burdening a self-fluxing mix can be used. This is not always done, as, for instance, at the Caen furnaces of the Société Métallurgique de Normandie, where the Soumont ore of Normandy is used, which is a carbonate. This ore is crushed and calcined at the mines, yielding a product that is porous and well sized for blast-furnace consumption. The lines of the Caen furnaces are given in Fig. 1. Originally these furnaces had 16 tuyeres; six are plucked and these tuyeres are set in the lower part of the bosh. Operating data on these furnaces are given in Table 1. Endurance strengths at 10&apos; cycles, fatigue-hardening rates, and endurance strength/0.2 pct proof stress ratios have been determined jbr a range of Cu(Ni), Cu(Si), and S.R.0. Cu(Au) solid solutions. Some douht is cast on simple cross slip models of fatigue hardening in view of opposite composition dependencies of hardening displayed by Cu(Si) and Cu(Au). The temperature dependencies of hardening also are the opposite of predictions made on the basis of a cross slip model. A correlation apparently exists between the fatigue strength/0.2 Pc~ proof s1.re.s~ ratios and rates of fatigue hardening. An increase in PS/PS due to alloying or temperature change is accompanied by a decrease in hardening rate, and vice versa. In recent years there has been much interest in the determination of the dislocation structure of fatigued metals and alloys. The accumulated evidence, e.g., Refs. 1 to 5, suggests that the structure may be dependent on the stacking fault energy, 7, of the fatigued metal in the same way that fatigue hardening rates have also been shown to apparently depend on u .6&apos; 7 The above research followed the various earlier theories relating crack nucleation to ease of cross slip, e.g., Refs. 8 to 131 so "ggesting that y may indeed be the parameter of principal significance in all facets of the fatigue process. However, comparatively little attention has been paid to correlating engineering fatigue data with observations of the above type. Certainly, it would be useful if potential engineering fatigue performance could be assessed from a knowledge of easily determined alloy properties, and the present research originated from this standpoint. TO investigate the widest Possible range of 7 would require the use of two solvent bases, e.g., aluminum and copper, but a reasonable coverage can be provided by copper-based solutions alone. Therefore, it was decided to work with Cu(Ni) and Cu(Si) solid solutions, the approximate stackillg fault energies of which are given in Table I. The y range extends from low, Cu(7.5 at- Pet Si), to moderately high in Cu(2-5 at. ~ct ~i) and two of the Cu(Ni) alloys. The values listed in Table I should be regarded as qualitative only, being derived as follows. Dillamore and smallman14 quote a value of 85 i 30 erg.cm-2 for the stacking fault energy of pure copper, based on an earlier value due to Howie and swannl5 corrected by Brown&apos;s formula.&apos;&apos; Since the ratios (alloy)h(pure copper) have been reported17,18 for Cu(Ni) alloys containing up to 30 pct Ni, approximate ) values for these alloys can be computed, and a rough estimate of 7 for Cu(50 at. pct Ni) obtained by extrapolation. The relatively low y value obtained in this way for Cu(50 at. pct Ni) coincides with the observation of Nakajima19 that the stacking fault probability is a maximum at this composition. Likewise, the y values for the three ~u(~i) alloys are estimates based on values given by Swann and Nuttingo corrected on the basis Of Brown&apos;s estimate that the true 7 values are probably 2.3 times greater than those originally computed. In addition to the above alloys it was decided to investigate short-range ordered (s.R.O.) CU(AU) alloys containing up to 25 at. pct Au. This last alloy has been shown to have a well-defined planar arrangement of dislocations when deformed,21,22 probably due to cross slip being restricted by the S.R.O. Engineering fatigue data was to be represented by the determination of endurance strengths, and these were to be correlated with fatigue hardening and mechanical property data. EXPERIMENTAL I, order to study the desired properties and property changes, the following alloys were prepared: Cu(2.5 at. pct Si), Cu(5.0 at. pct Si), Cu(7.5 at. pct Si), Cu(5.0 at. pct Ni), Cu(25.0 at. pct Nil, Cu(50.0 at. pct Ni), Cu(5.0 at. pct AU), Cu(15.0 at. pct AU), Cu(25.0 at. pct AU). The copper and gold were zone-refined, while the silicon was semiconductor grade. The nickel was of 99.95 p,t. purity.* All alloys were induction-melted in a *Kindly supplied by the International Nickel co. helium atmosphere, appropriate precautions being taken to avoid segregation in the Cu-Au series. Rod stock was obtained by rolling and swag,ng. A few Bridgman single crystals were grown for fatigue-hardening studies, but most material was machined into polycrystalline fatigue speciments of the design shown in Fig. 1, and into polycrystalline tensile and fatigue-hardening specimens of simple cylindrical design. During the planning of the fine coal cleaning addition at the Gary, W. Va., Coal Preparation Plant of United States Steel Corp. careful consideration was directed toward the problem of minus 48 mesh refuse disposal. The plant flow sheet included wet screening the raw coal at ¼ in., pumping the minus ¼ in. raw coal to bowl desiltors for desliming, and then cleaning the deslimed raw coal on tables. The material to be removed from the circuit as minus 48 mesh refuse consisted of the minus 100 mesh desiltor overflow thickened in two 120 ft diam thickeners and minus 1 mm screened from the table refuse. Later a flotation plant was added to recover coal from the desiltor overflow, and a classifier replaced the screens to make a sharper size separation of the table refuse at 48 mesh. Today the minus 48 mesh refuse at Gary consists of thickened flotation tailing and thickened spiral classifier overflow. The transportation of large quantities of fine, wet refuse filter cake mixed with jig and table refuse over existing conveying equipment would have been neither dependable nor economical. Filtration was therefore impractical, and disposal of the fine materials was a problem. The decision was to pump the material to storage ponds.

Largest and most important of the milling plants under construction during the year is the Morenci plant of the Phelps Dodge Corp., in Arizona, where plans are being rushed for production in 1942. Grate mills will be used for fine-grinding, and in the pilot plant, classifiers of the spiral type have the preference for the closed- circuit work. The flotation units will be chiefly of the pneumatic type, with some mechanical units as auxiliaries. The Fagergren, Pan American, and Agitair machines were left in the competition as the year closed. If the absence of European markets for finished products has dislocated the mining industry, fortunately the lack of raw materials required in the beneficiation of ores has not been serious. except possibly as to the inability to import flint grinding pebbles. Some of the less important gold mines still use pebbles for grinding as is also the practice in the comminution of nonmetallics used in various industries. THIS paper does not deal with all sands used in the glass industry in Missouri; it covers only that used in the plate-glass factory at Crystal City. However, it is probably safe to say that other sands, pro- [ ] duced throughout the state for this purpose, are of identical nature. The glass sand used in Missouri is commonly called the St. Peter deposit, which is ascribed to the Ordovician Rock series in the form of sandstone. This St. Peter deposit, aside from a few small outliers, covers a large area of eastern Missouri. It forms, through a broad curve, the northeast margin of the typical Ozark region between Cape Girardeau on the southeast and Mineola, Montgomery County, on the northwest. The belt is extremely irregular, varying from one to ten miles in width; its length is 150 miles in a straight line. [ ] The outcrop near the entrance to the Crystal City mine appears in the form of a sandstone bluff approximately 30 ft. high, running along Plattin Creek (Fig. , I). Above the sand rock an overburden of Joachim limestone appears, which, thickens to nearly 300 ft. and forms the hill commonly called Buck Knob. Test holes, where drilled at various points and the drillers&apos; log indicate that the St. Peter deposit ranges in thickness from 63 to 71 feet. PROPERTIES OT THE ST. The tensile properties of Cu-0.20 pct Al, Cu-0.45 pct Mg, Cu-0.27 pct Cr, and Cu-0.22 pct Be solid-solution alloys were studied at -196°, 18°, 2509 and 500°C on wires internally oxidized at 900°and 1000°C. Internal oxidation produced marked increases in yield strength relative to pure copper, particularly at low temperature. The yield strength decreased with increase in temperature to a much greater extent than predicted by current theories of dispersion hardening. The strengthening effect of internal oxidation persisted throughout the entire stress-strain curve, but since a marked loss of ductility occurred at all test temperatures, only modest increases in tensile strength were realized. INTERNAL oxidation involves the preferential oxidation of a baser solute in a relatively noble solvent by diffusion of oxygen into the solid. Since the process is diffusion controlled, it is expedient to carry it out at a high temperature often approaching the melting point. The amount of solute is limited and the oxidation conditions adjusted so that oxygen diffuses inwards to meet the solute causing reaction to progress inwards and form subscale instead of only sur face scale. The reaction can be made to occur throughout the thickness of thin material producing a fine dispersion of oxide inside the metal. C. S. Smith1"3 appears to have been the first to recognize the true nature of the process of internal oxidation. Although extensive kinetic and metal-lographic studies followed by Rhines and coworkers,4-5 Chaston7 andMeijering and Druyvesteyn8 working independently were the first to report hardening effects due to internal oxidation. These results prompted detailed studies of the effects of internal oxidation on the hardness, tensile, creep, and fatigue properties of a number of alloys by G. C. Smith and coworkers9-12 in England, on hardness by Gottardi13 in Italy, and on hardness and tensile properties by wood14 in the U.S.A. Publications dealing with other aspects of internal oxidation will not be reviewed here. Internal oxidation of solutes having a high affinity for oxygen provides a means of obtaining very fine dispersions stable in a suitable atmosphere at temperatures well above those at which most age harden ing precipitates coalesce. The process therefore offers a method of producing thin sheet and wire of possibly outstanding creep resistance. The size limitation might be overcome by internally oxidizing porous powder compacts made from alloy powder before final sintering. PREPARATION OF ALLOYS The alloy ingots, which were approximately 5 1/2 in. long by 1 in. diam, were made up in a high-frequency furnace, using as raw materials OFHC copper, 99.99 + pct Al, high-purity magnesium, and master alloys of Cu-4.19 pct Be and Cu-10 pct Cr. The alloys containing aluminum and magnesium were melted ii closed high-purity graphite crucibles and solidified in the crucible which was lowered partly Out of the coil to give a hot-top effect. ZINC smelters in the central western. States have established a very high standard of purity for blende-concentrates, viz., zinc 60, iron less than 3, and lead less than 1 per cent. The very low percentage of iron is made possible by the blende containing less than 0.5 percent of isomorphous iron sulphide and by the sparing occurrence of pyritic material in the large blende-deposits of southwestern Missouri and southeastern Kansas. The blende in these districts occurs in sub-Carboniferous limestone, and is associated with chert, residual clay, calcite, pyrite or rnarcasite and bitumen. The different minerals are coarse and therefore readily separated by mechanical washing from the blende, with the exception of pyrite and marcasite, as blende has a specific gravity of from 3.9 to 4.1, marcasite, from 4.85 to 4.90, and pyrite, from 4.95 to 5.10. The common procedure of dressing the ores is to crush in a breaker, size in a trommel with 0.5-in. holes, pass the over-size through roughing-rolls and then jig the ore, now reduced to 0.5 in. maximum size, in roughing multiple-sieve jigs. The products of these are waste-tailings, sine-discharge coarse concentrates, side-discharge coarse middlings and bottom-discharge fine middlings. The coarse concentrates are sent to the market. The coarse middlings are crushed in middlings-rolls and brought back into the system by feeding into the main trommel. The fine middlings are cleaned upon finishing-jigs. The reverse martensitic transfomzation (i.e., the conversion of martensite to austenite on heating) was investigated in Fe-Ni alloys containing 30.5 to 33.5 wt pct Ni. The reversed austenite was found to be sufficiently distorted to exhibit marked differences in mechanical properties and to undergo recovery and re crystallization on further heating. In particular, the yield strength of the reversed austenite was as much as 2.5 times higher than that of the virgin austenite: with five cycles of the direct and reverse martensitic transformation, the yield strength was 2.6 times higher. There was an accompanying decrease in strain-hardening capacity and in stable ductility or uniform elongation. The recrystallization was observed to follow sigmoidal kinetics, but was characterized by an abnormal1y large temperature dependence which was evidently due to carbon segregation at the migrating grain boundaries. Upon recrystallization, the strength Properties reverted to those of the virgin austenite, but the ductility did not fully recover until the annealing temperature was further raised to dissipate the carbon segregation at the grain boundaries. The transformation of reversed austenite to produce second-generation martensite resulted in an unusually imperfect structure, thereby leaditg to additional strengthening. Horlleuer, the martensitic phase was much less responsive in this respect than was the austenite. MOST martensitic transformations are capable of undergoing a reverse transformation back to the austenitic phase on heating.&apos; This reaction, like the direct transformation to martensite on cooling, is usually athermal. In analogy with the Ms andMf temperatures for the martensitic transformation (where M, > Mf), the reverse transformation is characterized by the As andAf temperatures (where As<Af). It is well-known that the finish (Af) of the martensite-to-austenite reaction on heating may occur at a temperature where austenite is not stable relative to other phases in the equilibrium diagram.&apos; Reverse martensitic transformations have been found to influence the properties of the parent austenitic phase in a number of ferrous alloys. The austenite thus produced after one or more reversals is significantly altered in strength, microstruc-ture, diffusivity, and annealing characteristics compared to well-annealed, virgin austenite. The first detailed observations of such phenomena were made by Wasserman3 on an Fe-30 wt pct alloy. He found that the reversed austenite (i.e., austenite formed by the reverse martensitic transformation) was much stronger than the original austenite, and the second-generation martensite (i.e., martensite produced from the reversed austenite) was somewhat stronger than the first-generation martensite. On heating the reversed austenite, recrystallization occurred in a manner similar to that of a cold-worked metal; the Laue spots sharpened and the strength decreased.4 In recent years, Russian workers have shown considerable interest in these reverse martensitic transformations. Most of such investigations5-10 have been concerned with the stabilization of reversed austenite relative to subsequent martensitic transformation, and because of its unusual nature, this phenomenon will be discussed in detail elsewhere." On the other hand, the annealing behavior of reversed austenite and the attendant variation in properties have received little attention beyond the experiments of Wasserman.3,4 Gridnev eta1.,8 in one of the few such studies. followed the hardness change of reversed austenite as a function of time at three annealing temperatures. The marked strengthening of austenite achieved by the reverse martensitic transformation has been referred to as "transformation strengthening" by Wasserman3,4 and as "phase hardening" by Malyshev et a1.7,9,10 to differentiate it from hardening produced by cold working. Both groups of investigators noted that further strengthening of the austenite could be attained by repeated or cyclic transformations, but the first cycle resulted in the most pronounced effect. Evidence of the altered microstructure of reversed austenite has been reported by Maximova and Nikonorova6 and by Edmonson and KO.12 The former found that reversed austenite was much more sensitive to etching than the original austenite, and the latter authors observed a (&apos;ghost" structure resembling martensite in certain areas of the reversed austenite. A STUDY by J. R. Low, Jr.1 on the effect of quench aging on the Charpy-impact specimens of semikilled 1020 steel disclosed that a decrease in cooling rate from 1275°F raised the transition temperature. This was demonstrated in his investigation by controlling the cooling rate of impact specimens to duplicate that of a heavier plate and com- paring the properties with air-cooled specimens and quenched specimens. The transition temperature of the samples that had been cooled at a rate estimated to be similar to that of an air-cooled 3/4 in. plate was approximately 45ºF higher than the quenched samples. The transition temperature of the air-cooled series was between that of the slow-cooled and the quenched series. On the basis of this work, it appeared that the cooling rate of plates after rolling in a hot mill would have a bearing on the brittle fracture of the
