The diffusivity of uranium in liquid cadmium has been measured as a function of temperature by the capillary -bath technique. The diffusivity measurements were made at 4509 500°, 575º, and 650°C, over which temperature range the diffusivity of uranium varied from 1.3 to 2.3 x 10-5 sq cm per sec. The diffusivity of uranium in cadmium was less than that predicted by the Einstein-Stokes equation. VERY little information is available on the diffusivity of uranium in liquid metals. Bonillal has reported a single measurement of the diffusivity of uranium in bismuth. Measurement of the diffusivity of uranium in cadmium was undertaken, not only to supply data in an area in which a dearth of information exists, but also because of a need for this physical property measurement in connection with mass transfer studies now underway in the U-Cd system at Argonne National Laboratory. The capillary-bath method used in this work has been successfully used by other workers2"4 to obtain diffusivities in liquid metal systems. Although considerable experimental technique is required to obtain reliable diffusivity measurements, the basic information required is only that of temperature, capillary tube length, the initial and final compositions of the alloy in the capillary tube, and the composition of the bath into which the solute element is diffusing. From these measurements, diffusivities may be calculated using Fick's law. The diffusivity equations are presented in the Appendix. Equations which are often used to predict diffusivities in dilute solutions5 are the Einstein-Stokes equation: D= (kT)/(6pµr) and the Eyring equation: D = (?,kT/?y?zp), where D= diffusivity (sq cm per sec), k = Boltzman's constant, T= temperature ("K), p = viscosity (poises), r = radius of diffusing molecule or species (cm), and A,, Ay, and A, are the diameters of the diffusing molecule in the three axial directions. For round molecules, the Eyring equation gives values which are 37r times larger than the Einstein-Stokes equation. In this work, the experimental values were compared to the Einstein-Stokes equation. Experimental values of diffusivities in liquid metal systems usually lie between those predicted by the Einstein-Stokes and Eyring equations. Conventional concrete block plastered with a cementitious coating is the most common material used in the construction of permanent stoppings to direct airflow in underground mines in the US. All mines experience various degrees of strata convergence depending on depth of overburden, geological conditions, and type of roof support employed. Strata convergence will cause cracks and joint openings in masonry stoppings, resulting insignificant air leakage losses. Where strata convergence is severe, complete structural failure of the stopping can ultimately occur. Reconstruction of damaged or destroyed stoppings adds expensive overhead to mining operations, and even greater expenses are incurred from the additional fan horsepower required to overcome leakage losses. Ideally, a stopping should maintain high resistance to airflow while yielding to strata convergence. By properly incorporating a polyisocyanurate rigid foam material within the masonry block structure, stopping service life can be increased in mines experiencing strata convergence problems such as floor heave, roof loading, and lateral rib movement.

1. INTRODUCTION. THE anthracite coal trade, with a shipment averaging about 70,000,000 tons per year, differs essentially from other coal business, in the fact that the larger sizes, comprising about 65 per cent. of the total, are used almost exclusively for domestic purposes, principally during the winter months; and that for proper combustion close-sizing is imperative, so that eight sizes are made; broken, egg, stove, and nut, known as prepared sizes, and pea, buckwheat, rice, and barley, known as steam sizes. These sizes are made in the regular course of preparation, and but little variation in the natural percentage of each is practicable. Thus it is necessary either to work the collieries intermittently, or to dispose of all the varying sizes in their fixed proportions. Unfortunately, the market does not at all times absorb the coal in proper proportions, and rather than interfere with the regular operation of the mines it has been found economical to provide storage for the excess. While the cellars of the consumers are the great storage-plants of the country, this capacity is not under the control of the trade, except so far as reduced prices during the spring and summer months may tempt the use of this reserve. The same remark applies but with less force to the retail yards, which,, though usually small, store in the aggregate a large amount of anthracite. While every effort is made to utilize to the utmost the individual storage-capacity of the country, there still remains the necessity for taking care of the irregularities of the market by the construction of storage-plants under the direct control of the producers. Such plants are usually the property of the railroads, and are situated at points most convenient from a traffic stand-point.

Mining of potash more than 3000 ft beneath the water-bearing sediments in Saskatchewan presented the unique challenge of designing stable mine workings and assuring protection from overhead water in a material that was believed to flow plastically, but whose behavior as a plastic material was not sufficiently known. Under the stress conditions ordinarily encountered in mining most rocks behave as elastic materials; that is, they compress slightly under pressure, and rebound when the pressure is released. Salt and potash, however, are different. Even under the relatively low pressures encountered at shallow depths, these materials become slightly plastic and yield to stress by flowing.* The plastic properties become more pronounced at greater depth and pressure, and the question arises as to whether or not the plastic flow will be rapid enough and exert enough pressure to destroy underground structures or interrupt the mining process.

Prof. Mathesius analyzes the running of Howland's furnace No. 19, according to the method described by him in Stahl and Eisen, 1916, Nos. 30 and, 31, and in his work "Die physikalischen und chemischen Grundlagen den Eisenhüttenwesens" (Spamer, Leipzig). By assuming 500 Cal. lost from the hearth by radiation and cooling water per kilogram of pig iron made, a throat-gas temperature of 600° C., and taking the ratio of C02/CO as 0.64, he finds that his diagram would show 0.68 kg. of carbon oxidized per kilogram of pig iron, while Howland gives 0.66 kg. He expresses himself as well satisfied with this test of the accuracy of his theory. THIS paper presents an experimental verification of some of the predictions made by one of us' concerning 'the influence of certain conditions of casting upon the size and position of the pipe', and the position of the segregate, in steel ingots. The predictions which we have been able to verify are the following A. That the pipe is shortened and the segregate raised 1. By slow casting; 2. By casting with the large end up instead of down; 3. By retarding the cooling of the top, e.g., by means of a sinking-head. B. That the pipe is shortened by slow cooling. C. That the pipe and segregate lie in the last freezing-part. Our procedure was to cast ingots of wax (commercially pure stearic acid) containing a little bright green copper oleate (usually 1.5 per cent.) under varying conditions; to saw each ingot open along a longitudinal plane passing through its axis ; and to examine the longitudinal section thus laid bare. In order to make the segregate or enriched part more distinct in color from the impoverished part, a very little red cerasine was added. An experiment which will be described later showed that the cerasine itself does not segregate markedly, if at all. Hence we may assume that the strong contrasts between the green and red shown in so many of our ingots are due, not to segregation of cerasine, but to that of the green oleate, in the wax which in itself is uniformly reddened with cerasine.

The different samples of brick examined were Grecian magnesite, American magnesite; silica brick and coke-oven tiling made in Belgium and used in retort coke-ovens. The Grecian magnesite was furnished by a New Pork party. The American magnesite and the silica brick were furnished by a manufacturing company in Pittsburgh. From these brick were made cylindrical cores, '79 inches long and 15/8 inches in diameter. At one end of each was drilled a hole about 1/4-inch in diameter and 11/4 inches long, into which the thermometer was inserted during the experiment. Conductivity.—The apparatus used for determining the conductivity, as shown in Fig. 1, is a sheetriron drum, 18 inches in diameter and 8 inches high. In the center is a little combustion-chamber with walls of split fire-brick, 39 inches square and about 6 inches high. The fire-brick, however, pass through the drum to the table on which the drum stands. The cores are placed horizontally, half-way between the top and bottom of drum and on the line of diameters at right angles. Precipitation of tin from Pb-Sn alloys (lead-rich) occurs by the nucleation and growth of hemispherical cells which consist of tin lomelloe interspersed in the depleted solid solution. Nucleation and growth of these cells and the tin interlamellar spacing at various compositions and temperatures have been investigated. The interlamellar spacing increases approximately as the reciprocal of the logarithm of the supersaturation ratio. For constant initial tin concentration the concentration of cell nuclei increases with decreasing temperature to a limiting temperature-independent value. The kinetic results support the view that the cell growth rote is governed by the diffusion of tin along the cell boundary. In the main, the results confirm the authors' earlier deductions, drawn from resistometric and calorimetric data, about the precipitation mechonism. IT has been shown1, 2 that tin (ß) precipitates from lead-rich (a) PbSn solutions by the nucleation and growth of cells (cellular or discontinuous precipitation). These cells consist of tin lamellae, with a spacing 1, interspersed in a depleted a solution. Reorientation of a also accompanies cell growth. The kinetics of cellular precipitation of tin from lead have been measured by resistometric2, 3 and ca1orimetric1, 3 techniques. The time-transformation isotherms (t equals time; x, volume fraction of specimen transformed) of the initial rapid precipitation, which drains about 60 pet of the tin from solution, have been described by a kinetic law having the form x = 1 —exp (—bt n) [I] where n usually has the value 3.0. It was shown" that this law and the other kinetic facts can be explained satisfactorily if it is assumed that the cells grow at a constant rate and that all the cells nucleate in a time negligible in comparison with the period of cell growth before impingement. Thus, for hemispherical cells b = (2/3)pNG3 [21 where G is the rate of cell growth in cm per sec, and N is the number of cell nuclei per unit volume. The rapid rate of cell growth at low temperatures can be accounted for"' if it is assumed that the dissolved tin drains to the lamellae edges by diffusion along the sweeping cell boundary rather than by diffusion through the a crystal (volume diffusion). For cell growth governed by cell boundary diffusion it was shown, approximately G=2(X° - X° / X° ) DBA / l2 where A equals the thickness of the cell boundary; D R, the coefficient of diffusion of tin atoms within the boundary; and X° and X, are the atom fractions of tin in the supersaturated and saturated solutions, respectively. An approximate method of calculation is developed in this paper which allows duplication of radial unsteady-state gas flow computer results where Darcy's law applies, such as those reported by Aronofsky and Jenkins and Bruce, Peaceman, Rachford, and Rice. Moreover, the new calculation method can be used to obtain results for radial unsteady-state gas flow obeying the quadratic flow law proposed by Duwez and Green. Means are discussed for predicting well behavior at single or superimposed flow rates in finite or infinite reservoirs, determining reservoir rock properties from well-test data, reproducing and interpreting back-pressure test data, and determining the radial extent and reserves of gas reservoirs from well-test data. Example calculations are presented for gas flow following both Darcy's law and the quadratic flow law. INTRODUCTION Since the publishing of U. S. Bureau of Mines Monograph 7,1 most gas-well testing methods have been based on the equation q = y (pl2 - pw2)a, where q = production rate, pl and pw, are formation pressure and sandface pressure, respectively, and y and a are constants to be obtained from test data. These methods, used for predicting both deliverability and "open-flow" capacity of gas wells, have been useful and accurate in many cases but unsatisfactory in others. Even at best, however, they do not supply information about the formation or lead to an understanding of nonsteady-state gas flow in porous media. Many theoretically based studies2-4 of gas flow obeying Darcy's law have been made.' Since the partial differential equations which result from combining Darcy's flow law with the continuity equation are nonlinear, most of the published research consists of either numerical solutions or analytical solutions for linear approximating equations. Such solutions have been of limited value in field work due to their unhandy form and their failure to correlate most field data. There is evidence5,6 which indicates that Darcy's law is inadequate to describe gas flow at some flow rates of practical interest. A quadratic flow law: which reduces to Darcy's law at low rates, is more successful in accounting for experimentally observed behavior. This flow law has been applied successfully to a few hypothetical reservoir cases in work which has recently been published.10 However, these numerical solutions of the equations involved have been successful only on a special analog computer. Routine applications to field cases would be awkward and have not been attempted. The present paper describes an approximate method for computing nonsteady-state gas flow solutions which has been completely successful in predicting the results for both Darcy flow and quadratic flow obtained by elaborate numerical methods. The new calculation method allows determination of the observable variables in gas-well testing at constant rates. It is similar to the scheme of using a succession of steady states suggested by Muskat7 in that it makes use of steady-state and material-balance equations. It also is similar to the work of Aronofsky and Jenkins2 in that the new method includes Aronofsky and Jenkins' stabilized flow equation as a special case. It improves upon both of these calculation schemes in that it accurately describes all portions of reservoir history and suggests means of determining reservoir rock properties from well-test data. This paper deals only with production from a reservoir, in which case the rate is defined as being negative. The reservoir studied here is a homogeneous, disk-shaped porous body of uniform thickness, with all boundaries sealed except the inner radial boundary of the well.

Rigid censorship prevails in various countries, as the question of the volume of petroleum supplies has become one of great strategic importance. This is even truer than in the last war, owing to greater mechanization of armies. It has always been the policy of officers in charge of the symposium to refrain from publishing information that might possibly injure national or private interests. At the close of the war we hope again to publish full and accurate records of production abroad. Y., (communication to the Secretary *).-There are two points regarding gun erosion on which I want to say a few words: The first is about the analogy to hardening of wire by drawing and the second the possible role played by thermal conductivity of the metal. The ductile metals do not necessarily become brittle when cold-worked as it is possible to draw copper from 3. in. in diameter soft rod down to the finest hair wire without annealing. This results, as stated in the paper, informing a hardened core with a very hard skin. The electrical conductivity is depressed some 3 per cent. and the tensile strength nearly tripled. A soft copper wire 0.08 in. in diameter and 6 in. long may be twisted 150 or more turns before the wire will snap under torsion. A hard-drawn wire will break after perhaps a dozen twists, the skin breaking down at one spot. Just wiping the wire with a cloth clamp with dilute nitric acid has a remarkable effect in increasing the number of twists without appreciably lowering the tensile strength, showing the skin to be very thin. On the other hand, pickling the rod, from which the wire is to be drawn, in dilute nitric acid also greatly increases the number of twists which can be applied to the resulting wire. This indicates that the copper oxide scale produced when the wire bar is rolled hot is more or less rolled into the rod and may have much to do with the skin effect. We also know that if the conditions of drawing are not correct, the heat of deformation in the die may produce quite an annealing effect. The application of this analogy to what occurs in a gun to produce the effects noted offers some difficulty. The second point is that as the temperature of the surface of the gun bore has undoubtedly a great deal to do with the amount of erosion, one natural remedy would be to conduct the heat away fast enough to keep this temperature within desired limits. This brings up the question of the thermal conductivity of the metal of which the gun is made. We know that the conductivity of pure metals is greatly altered by alloying and that the alloy is usually, though not always, lower in conductivity than the metal before alloying. This is interesting when it is considered that the high-nickel and manganese-steel alloys show greater erosion as stated. Would it not be instructive to study the question from the point of view of heat conducted away from the eroded surface?

Mississippi has had oil production for only the past six years and natural gas production of minor magnitude since' 1926. The search for oil and gas commenced in 1903 and 1496 wells had been drilled in search of oil and gas up to Jan. 1, 1946. As the year 1945 ended, 659 wells were producing oil and gas from 23 separate reservoirs. The production for the year was 8,353,719,000 standard cubic feet of natural gas measured on a pressure base of 15.025 lb. per sq. in. abs., 15.316,009 bbl. of oil¬field water and 19,093,766 bbl. of crude oil and condensate. Production for the year 1944 was 2,636,067,000 standard cubic feet of gas, 14,979,793 bbl. of salt water and 16,420,346 bbl. of crude oil and condensate.

ELASTIC constants of yttrium and eleven of the rare earth elements have been measured. This has been accomplished by measuring the propagation velocities of ultrasonic pulses. The velocity measurements were made by noting the elapsed time between an applied pulse and the appearance of successive echoes. The pulse-echo technique has become relatively common, and the basis of the measurement is outlined in several standard tests, e.g., Heuter and Bolt.1 Two important assumptions are made when using this method for the determination of elastic moduli. First, the pulse is assumed to propagate as a plane wave. To justify this assumption, the cross section of the test specimen should be large compared to the wave length of the transmitted pulse. For these measurements on the rare earth elements the minimum cross section wave length ratio was about 20. A second assumption which must be made when using polycrystalline specimens is that the grains are sufficiently numerous and randomly oriented so that the specimen may be approximated as elasti-cally isotopic. The grain size in the as-cast specimens which were used is believed to be sufficiently fine for this approximation, and the degree of preferred orientation is believed to be small. Supporting this viewpoint is the fact that elasticity measurements by the pulse-echo technique on as-cast specimens of other metals give results which are in satisfactory agreement with values obtained by other techniques. Hence, it is believed that the measured elasticity values for the rare earth elements are not apt to be seriously in error due to the assumption of elastic isotopy. The apparatus used in this determination was a modified Sperry Reflectoscope with a precisely calibrated time base circuit. Piezoelectric transducers were used both to generate the pulse and to detect the echoes. X-cut quartz crystals were used for the longitudinal modes, and Y-cut quartz crystals were used for the shear modes. Frequencies of 2.25 and 5 megacycles per sec were employed. Most of the specimens were 2.5 to 5.0 cm in length. Results Table I is a tabulation of the measured propagation velocities of longitudinal waves and of shear waves, together with densities obtained by Sped- ding, Daane, and Herrmann2 from lattice parameter measurements. The shear modulus, Poisson's ratio, and Young's modulus were calculated from the data in Table I through use of the following relationships: µ = pv32 [1] s=2-(vb/vs)2/2[1-(vb/vs)2] [2] and Y= 2µ(l+s) [3] where s is the shear modulus, Y is the Young's modulus, s is Poisson's ratio, p is the density, V0 is the longitudinal wave velocity, and v, is the shear wave velocity. The calculated quantities are shown in Table 11. Compressibility values can be computed from the relationship and the computed values may be compared with measured values obtained by Bridgman.8 Table III lists the data for such a comparison. The agreement is satisfactory, being particularly good for neodymi- um and gadolinium, poor for samarium, and intermediate for the other elements. Some variation is expected since Bridgman's measurements are isothermal, whereas the present measurements are adiabatic. In addition there may be some effect due to small variations in purity. Though most of the rare earth metals measured by Bridgman and all of the metals used in the present measurements were prepared at this laboratory, minor purity variations might exist since the samples came from different lots. The symposium on production for the year 1942 contains no papers on the foreign situation except those on Argentina and Mexico. It has always been the policy of officers in charge of the symposium to refrain from publishing information that might possibly injure national or private interests. At the close of the war we hope again to publish full and accurate records of production abroad. Excerpts From Circular to Authors In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the following excerpts from the Circular to Authors. The field is the unit in this tabulation. In cases of fields extending across State boundaries, such as Rodessa, it is suggested that each State author treat the section of the field in his State as a unit, and by a footnote indicate that the field extends into an adjacent State. Each space in Table I may represent one of four possibilities; either it is not applicable to the particular field, or the proper entry is not determinable, or the proper entry may be determinable but is not determinable from data available to the author, or the proper entry is determinable. When spaces are not applicable, leave blank; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable but not determinable from data available to the author, please insert y; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable by the author, make such entries. y implies a Rope that in some future year a definite figure will be available. The entry of a zero is a positive declaration, and it is an important declaration where it is in order. Inability to determine precisely the correct entry for a particular space should not lead the author to insert merely y. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determination. In such cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. For many spaces the correct entries represent the opinion of the author (for example, "Area Proved") and in such cases the entry need not be hedged to such extent as when the quantities are definite yet can be ascertained only approximately by the author. In cases under definite headings but where figures are only approximate, the author may use x. It is thought that the nearest whole numbers are sufficiently accurate for our purposes except as to percentage of sulphur in oil. If an author desires to report any other figures to tenths, he may do so. The quantity of gas produced should include, where possible, gas sold or otherwise marketed, and gas blown into the air, burned as flares or otherwise wasted. Segregation of these figures would be interesting if the authors can make such segregation. In any event, the figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir. Under the columns on "Depth," the average depth to the top of the productive zones and to the bottom of the productive wells, when subtracted, should give the approximate thickness of the productive zone. For fields where this is not true because of unusually high dip or for some other reasons, it is suggested that the authors indicate in their text the approximate average thickness of the productive zone.
