Several primary ingot producers have introduced price changes for July. Howmet Aluminum Corp., Revere Copper and Brass, Inc. and the Anaconda Co, will increase late-July prices of 99.5 percent unalloyed aluminum ingot by 3 cents to 56 cents per pound, Prior to this, Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. had advanced June ingot values by 4 cents to 57 cents and Consolidated Aluminum Corp., 4.5 cents to 57.5 cents. Domestic merchants held June quotes at a range nearing 50-50.8 cents per pound. ANTIMONY Although NL Industries, since April of this year, stopped publishing prices for RMM and Lone Star antimony grade, values of domestically-refined antimony in alloy are being made available to industry, The current price of this material is $1.75 per pound of antimony contained in alloy, New York dealer-marketed metal was available in June at $1 -13-$1 .20 per pound. Important industrial uses of antimony are for flame retardants, storage batteries, chemicals, pigments, rubber, plastics, glass, ceramics and machinery.

"INTRODUCTION Water flooding of oil sands in Texas as a means of secondary recovery of oil has been practiced mainly in the north-central part of the State, which includes the old shallow fields in eight counties, extending south through Wichita and Clay Counties on the Red River into Brown County.The Texas Railroad Commission, is empowered ""to promote conservation and prevent waste in the drilling, completion, operation, and abandonment of oil wells"" and ""to issue regulations necessary for fulfillment of these ends,"" granted The Texas Co. the first permit to inject water into the oil-bearing sand on December 7, 1935. The permit was granted after the Commission had conducted a number of hearings, which were attended by many operators interested in that method of secondary recovery. Through December 31, 1944, the Commission had granted 50 permits for water flooding. Of that number, 45 permits were issued for projects in north Texas, the remaining 14 being distributed throughout west and south Texas. By the end of 1944, there were 33 active and 5 abandoned water-flooding projects in the North Texas area, as is in figure I.Oil production in the North Texas area started in 1904 from the shallow sands (ranging from 100 feet to 800 feet in depth) of the Petrolia (or Henrietta) field in northern Clay County. Development was rapid and unrestricted during the boom period from about 1911 to 1918, and considerable waste of both produced oil and reservoir energy resulted."

O efeito da convecção forçada foi estudado na micro e macroestrutura de lingotes de silício grau metalúrgico obtidos pela solidificação unidirecional a partir da extração de calor por uma base refrigerada em contato com o fundo do cadinho com o banho líquido. Um disco sob rotação foi imerso no silício líquido para promover a convecção forçada. Em lingotes de 100 mm, esta convecção aumenta de 8 para 80 mm o comprimento de uma região de grãos colunares claramente alinhados e livre de intermetálicos, indicando um aumento da macrossegregação. Um modelo de transferência de calor e massa indica que o aumento de transporte de soluto causado pela convecção forçada diminui o super-resfriamento constitucional e, consequentemente, aumenta a estabilidade da interface sólido-líquido plana, sem células ou dendritas. A ausência de células e dendritas pode ter contribuído para a maior macrossegregação de impurezas observada sob efeito de convecção forçada.

It is self-evident that conclusions based upon iron miners, so called, working largely above ground and employed chiefly in open-cut blasting ~perations or the management of steam shovels, etc., can not be made to apply to miners working continuously underground with an exposure of dust and other conditions quite similar to underground mining methods in the extraction of gold, silver, copper, lead, and other ores. The so-called "milling" process as practiced on the Mesabi Range may here be referred to, the same being explained in the report of the Immigration Commission to consist "in the sinking of a shaft on the edge of the ore body from which a tunnel is run in under the ore and connected with a vertical, funnel-shaped hole from under the surface, through which the ore is 'milled' down into the tramcars placed under the opening under the tunnel. After being loaded at the bottom of the funnelshaped hole, the cars are run out to the bottom 0.£ the shaft. where the ore is dumped into skids or elevators and raised to the ~urface and unloaded into the tipple, where it is loaded into thecal'S ready for shipment." It is properly pointed out that the so-called " milling" process employs some of the features of both the open-pit and underground methods of mining. For these and many other reasons it is self-evident that general statistics concerning iron mining are quite likely to be inconclusive and possibly seriously misleading. Aside from the foregoing the problem is seriously complicated by the extensive employment of foreign labor in the iron-mining ind ustries of the Lake Superior districts and of Negro labor in iron mining in Alabama. Within recent years, according to the report of the Immigration Commission, a considerable displacement has occurred in t~e quality of labor employed in iron mining, the displacement bemg referred to as "progressive," in that one race or group of races has entered the region and taken up the work offered in the lower occupations, the race or races already holdinz such positions having. moved up in the scale of occupation leaving the field to the newcomers. This statement is quite suggestive in that it indicates a comparatively short average trade life or trade exposure, quite at variance with the relatively long average ascer- MINES, QUARRIES, ORE REDUCTION, AND SMELTING. 377 tained for the iron mines of New <Tersey. It is said in the report of the Immigration Commission that- The Scandinavians and the other northern European races have given way to the Finns and Slovenians, and in the open-pit mines the Finns and Slovenians have given way to the south Italian, Montenegrins, Croatins, and other southern European races. In the underground mines the common labor and mining is chiefly done bv Finns and Slovenians because the races from the southern countries can not stand the heavy physical work required in this kind of mining. Here, too, is found the same upward movement, for formerly the English (Cornishmen) and Scandinavians' were in the lower occupations in the underground properties, At present the south Italians, Serbians, Montenegrins, and Croatians are performing the most menial work and are the races who are now at the foot of the scale of occupations. It is a matter of conjecture on the ranges as to who will push these races up or whether they will remain the commou laborers of the region. Inquiry was made into the prevalence of diseases OIl the ranges, but more with reference to outside sanitary conditions than to occupational exposure. The most common diseases on the ranges, however, were ascertained to be pulmonary tuberculosis and typhoid fever, and to a lesser extent smallpox and venereal diseases. With -cgard to pulmonary tuberculosis it is said that the disease is most Eevalent among the Finns and the Swedes, and is chiefly imported, I'here is no reference to a possible connection between disease occur- ~ence and occupational conditions, above or below ground, but there .s no evidence that this aspect of the iron-mining industry was made .he subject of a special investigation.

Safety problems in the mining and allied industries have led the Bureau of Mines to investigate over a period of years; the flammability (explosibility) of many types of combustible atmospheres principally at ordinary pressure; the results of these investigations have been made available as a bulletin. However, more recently, the demand for information on the flammability of gaseous mixtures at high and low pressures has increased greatly. In particular, the rapid development of high-altitude aviation has brought demands for information on the flammable (or explosive) characteristics of certain gases and liquids at low pressures. The present report gives the results of about 900 tests made to determine the flammability of the lighter paraffin hydrocarbons mixed with air and nitrogen at pressures of 400 200, 100 and 70 ram. Hg. The gases tested include natural gas, methane, ethane, propane normal butane and isobutane. The minimum pressures at which these gases are capable of propagating flame whorl individually mixed with air also were investigated.

The Pilgrim mine, operated by the Pioneer Gold Mining Co., is 9-1/2 miles west of Chloride in the Pilgrim mining district on the eastern slope of the Black Mountains, or River Range, Mohave County, Ariz. In March 1937, 100 tons of gold ore per day were being mined and milled at the property by a total force of 5i men. Climatic conditions allow year-round operations. Due to present activity in the county there is an ample supply of labor for the requirements of the mine. The Pilgrim is the only producing property within s radius of 6 miles; recently, however, the South Pilgrim Mining Co. has launched a development campaign on claims that adjoin the Pioneer Co. property to the south.

In its investigation of more efficient methods for utilizing the coals and lignites in the United States, to the end that waste might be avoided, the value of low-grade coals increased, and the life of the nation's fuel resources prolonged, the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey carried on a study of the factors involved in the manufacture and use of briquets, including the suitability of various coals for briquetting, the cheapest and most satisfactory binders, and the furnace behavior and evaporative efficiency of briquetted fuel. The investigations had their beginning in the work done at the coaltesting plant at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, St. Louis, Mo., in 1904, and were continued at St. Louis and later at Norfolk, Va. Accounts of various tests and statements of the conclusions to be drawn from them have appeared in a number of bulletins. a In connection with the work at Norfolk, comparative steaming tests were made in stationary, marine, and locomotive boilers with run-ofmine coal and the same coal formed into briquets of two sizes. The tests in a locomotive boiler that are described in detail in this bulletin were undertaken to add cumulative evidence to work done at other places. They were made possible through the courtesy of the Seaboard Air Line Railway Company in supplying both the locomotive and the coal used. During the trials the locomotive stood on a side track in the shop yards of the railway company at Portsmonth, Va. No running tests were made.

INTRODUCTION NUMEROUS examples of troubled zones, interfering with the normal development of coal seams, have been cited in the literature. From a geological point of view they can be subdivided into structural and sedimentary troubles. Of the latter type, wash-outs are usually the most bothersome. Some years ago, A. A. Thiadens and the author arrived at the conclusion that they represent fossil river-beds. A method of predicting the course of these rivers was developed, which has been successfully applied in the Netherlands coal measures, and more recently by P. Stassen in some of the Belgian coalfields and by the author in the Sydney coalfield. The Sydney coalfield has long .drawn the attention of geologists, and three main periods of systematic geological research may be distinguished. The first period, 1872-1900, is covered by the studies of Ch. Robb and H. Fletcher (32, 10-13) (1). Their detailed sections of the cliffs have lost nothing in value, and are frequently consulted today.

Air and water pollution and land reclamation relating to coal mining and utilization continued to be featured in research and technologic work on coal by the Bureau of Mines in 1967. Details of the environmental studies are given in this report, along with accounts of other research relating to the mining and utilization of coal. Other studies that were continued during 1967 included health and safety, mine explosives, coal preparation and transportation, coal utilization processes, chemistry and properties of coal, inspection and analysis, and inter-national activities. Publications issued in 1967 are cited throughout the report and in appendix C. Bureau of Mines research centers and laboratories are listed in appendix A, and organizations contributing to or cooperating in the work, in appendix B.

Over the past three decades, mining operations have seen a significant increase in the use of contractors for mining, camp management and catering, recruitment, maintenance, power management, and commissioning. More recently contractors have been engaged for stores and logistics, OH&amp;S, environmental, exploration, training etc. In some countries, such as South Africa, the trend is towards total outsourcing of all aspects of a mining operation which is coordinated by the owners’ management team.During the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) more Australian companies considered and/or took on this approach to recruiting for both projects and operations as mining companies were forced to rethink their corporate strategies as commodity prices plummeted to low levels, pushing operations and projects into potentially financially unviable territory.This paper discusses the labour recruitment, commissioning and operating strategy of Western Areas NL (WSA), with the assistance of Independent Metallurgical Operations Pty Ltd (IMO), as it progressed construction, commissioning and operation of the Cosmic Boy nickel concentrator at the Forrestania Nickel Project during and post GFC. The use of IMO contractors allowed Western Areas to mitigate labour cost risk during the uncertainty caused by the GFC and let their management team focus on the task of bringing a new operation into viable and profitable production.

Throughout the mining industry today, new bearing materials - ZA* high-performance zinc-aluminum alloys - are reducing costs of maintaining and rebuilding a wide range of equipment. As replacements for bronze bearings, installed in original equipment at the plant or during maintenance and repair operations in the field, the zinc alloys frequently provide better or equal performance at lower cost. The ZA Alloys The ZA alloys are a family of three high-performance zinc-aluminum alloys that compete in cost and performance with cast iron aluminum and bronze. The growing number and uses testifies to the versatility of these alloys and is encouraging their consideration in a wider range of applications. The ZA alloys are referred to as ZA-8, ZA-12, and ZA-27, the numbers corresponding approximately to the percentage of aluminum each alloy contains. ZA-8 is a permanent-mold casting alloy and is usually selected for decorative purposes; ZA-12 provides both performance and cosmetic benefits; ZA-27 offers the greatest functional strength. The term high performance ZA alloys distinguishes them and their improved engineering properties from traditional zinc die casting alloys. Maintenance Savings At its mine in Timmins, Ontario, Kidd Creek Mines Ltd. operates over 40 Joy VCR- 150 crawler-mounted air-powered rock drills. Most of the drill components undergo severe stress as the drill batters through the under-ground rock. As the components wear, the drill bits wobble; when the wobble becomes excessive, the drills are rebuilt. In the gear train, which rotates the drill steel, there are three planetary gears with - historically - bronze bushings. Since the planetary gear bushings are wear items, they are routinely replaced during overhaul. The bronze planetary gear bushings (three bushings per assembly) were replaced up to five times annually. With 43 drills in use, bushing consumption approached 600 per year. At the manufacturer&apos;s replacement part cost, the 600 bushings and gears would cost more than $20,000 a year. Even though a major saving was achieved by having the bronze bushings manufactured locally, the 600-unit annual usage provided ample incentive to investigate other ways of lengthening drill life and reducing the part costs. One approach was to consider using a bushing material that offered good bearing properties, but was lower in cost. About three years ago, ZA-12 zinc-aluminum casting alloy, costing less than half as much as bronze, was evaluated and selected for testing. One hundred ZA bushings were manufactured and placed in service as the drills came in for rebuilding. At the next rebuild the "drill doctor" (drill maintenance mechanic) noticed that, although the bronze bushings were completely destroyed, on occasion the zinc alloy bushings were not. In addition, he noted that some of the ZA bushings showed less wear than the bronze bushings. Because the bushings were changed routinely during each overhaul, the actual operating life of each bushing was not determinable. Therefore, it was not possible to statistically compare the life of the ZA bushing against the bronze. However, the desired life of the part was from overhaul to overhaul. So the ZA alloy obviously met the objective, giving equal or better life than bronze at a significantly lower price. Based on the favorable results of the testing under actual operating conditions, Kidd Creek maintenance personnel decided to switch permanently to the ZA bushings for rebuilding the VCR-150 rock drills. Original Equipment Application As one of the leading companies marketing the ZA alloys, as well as a zinc -copper-silver mining company, Kidd Creek is interested in developing applications for the alloys by original equipment manufacturers such as joy Manufacturing. Kidd Creek marketing representatives provided joy with information on the Timmins mine tests, along with ZA-12 bushings for evaluation and testing. Based on this information, joy installed ZA bushings in 12 new VCR-150 units and delivered them to customers for use in such areas as granite quarries and copper, lead, zinc, and limestone mines. During the following year, joy engineers closely monitored repair reports to verify the performance of the ZA part. The engineers&apos; findings convinced them of the advantages of ZA-12. As a result, joy now uses ZA-12 bushings in the manufacture of its VCR-150 air tools. Advantages for Casters and Users In the foundry, the new alloys have proved their castability and profit potential in sand and metal permanent-mold processes, as well as the new graphite permanent-mold gravity casting process. The energysaving, pollution-free and ease-of-machining benefits they offer are important to all of these processes. This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay mining, crushing and grinding methods, and costs, at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The, cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in many instances cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation shall ensue. The following report deals specifically with the methods employed by the Evans Pipe Co., Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Many high strength aerospace alloys undergo solution heat treatment (SHT) and aging to develop precipitate strengthening. Most simply, SHT involves an isothermal hold in a single phase region followed by relatively rapid cooling to develop a super-saturated solid solution from which precipitates form during aging. However, subsequent properties are sensitively dependent on the details of the SHT, which frequently also serves a homogenization function. Altering the details of the thermal cycle during SHT significantly improves the properties attained during aging, as presented by examples of SHT design for titanium aluminide intermetallics, polycrystalline and single crystal superalloys, and 7075 aluminum.

ABSTRACT: Strength, deformability and fluid flow properties of rock joints are to a great extent controlled by the surface roughness. The hydraulic conductivity of a rock fracture depends on the aperture distribution, the surface roughness and the contact area, each of which depend on the stresses that act on the fracture plane. However, despite much recent work, a complete understanding of the relationship between void space geometry, contact areas, applied stress, and hydraulic conductivity has yet to be achieved. Moreover, although in situ rock joints are subjected to both normal and shear loading, few studies have been conducted to investigate the effect of shear displacements on fluid flow through a single rock fracture, and which have addressed the issue of flow anisotropy induced by shearing. Experimental flow tests show that with increasing shear displacement, the fracture becomes heterogeneous and anisotropic, and becomes more permeable in the direction parallel to the displacement (Yeo et al., 1998). On the other hand, dry shear tests show that the surface fails in areas facing the shear direction (Grasselli and Egger, 2003). Moreover, the experimental results confirm that the shear strength of rock joints is direction-dependent. In this paper, a three-dimensional morphological description of several a natural fractures that have undergone shear displacement were generated using the Automated Topographic System at the University of Basel. The data analysis method of Grasselli (Grasselli et al., 2002a) is used to determine the surface parameters that are known to control the shear strength. Simulations of fluid flow through this fracture, in various directions relative to the direction of shear, are conducted using an FEM flow simulator. The results constitute the most detailed analysis yet undertaken of the relationship between shear displacement, shear strength, and fracture transmissivity. Obgleich in letzter Zeit viel in dieser Richtung geforscht wurde, kann der Zusammenhang zwischen Porenraumgeometrie, Kontaktflächen, wirkendem Druck und hydraulischer Leitfähigkeit noch nicht vollständig erklärt werden. Obwohl Klüfte in situ sowohl Normal- als auch Schubspannungen ausgesetzt sind, wurde der Einfluss von Scherverschiebungen auf den Kluftwasserfluss und die daraus resultierende Fliessanisotropie in einer einzelnen Kluft bisher kaum untersucht. Experimentelle Untersuchungen des Durchflusses zeigen, dass die Kluft für größer werdende Scherverschiebungen heterogen und anisotrop wird wobei die Permeabilität parallel zur Verschiebungsrichtung ansteigt (Yeo et al., 1998). Andererseits zeigen trockene Scherversuche, dass die Oberfläche an Stellen versagt, die gegen die Verschiebungsrichtung anstehen (Grasselli und Egger, 2003). Des weiteren bestätigen die experimentellen Ergebnisse eine Richtungsabhängigkeit der Kluftscherfestigkeit. In diesem Artikel wird eine dreidimensionale morphologische Beschreibung mehrerer natürlicher, durch Scherspannungen verschobener Klüfte vorgestellt, die vom Automated Topographic System der Universität von Basel erstellt wurde. Das von Grasselli (Grasselli et al., 2002a) entwickelte Datenanalyseverfahren wird zur Feststellung der die Scherfestigkeit bestimmenden Oberflächenparameter herangezogen. Mittels einer FEM-Simulation wird der Durchfluss durch eine solche Kluft in verschiedenen Richtungen simuliert. At the end of August, U.S. producer posting of 99.5 percent unalloyed aluminum had been established at 48¢ per pound. At that time, dealer-quoted unalloyed ingot was reportedly at 44¢-47¢. CADMIUM: By late August, most U.S. producers had raised cadmium selling prices by 25¢ to $3 per pound. As a consequence, dealer quoting of cadmium ranged from $2.95 to $3.05 per pound. COAL: The wildcat strike, which began in southern West Virginia on July 19 and eventually spread to nine other States before ending on August 13, at its peak, idled approximately 115,000 miners and accounted for daily coal losses of an estimated 1.5 million tons at the height of the work stoppage. Concerned about the effects of the production cutbacks, the Bureau of Mines, early in the strike period, initiated its coal strike monitoring system which it had developed during the prolonged coal strike in the fall of 1974.

The grade of mineral resource estimates underpin all major economic considerations of mining prospects. While there are reporting requirements to satisfy when stating a mineral resource estimate, an examination of NI 43-101 style reports suggests that authors believe that there are a number of ways of addressing these requirements. As a reader of these reports, some processes are helpful and others are not so in getting a real appreciation of how realistic is the mineral resource estimate. Critical to the quality of the mineral resource estimate is how realistic is the economic mineral concentration component. In many cases, this parameter is called grade. The industry experiences increased difficulty in achieving realistic grade estimates as the sample grade variability increases. The level of transparency in a mineral resource estimate is very much a function of the competence of the author. An objective presentation of the critical data, such as grade sampling variability can assist a reader in determining if the geology of the mineral concentration is adequately understood and how realistic is mineral resource grade estimate. This paper has considered 75 NI 43-101 style reports released in the past 2 years. The review demonstrates features that were helpful in determining how realistic the mineral resource grade estimate is. If there is insufficient transparency in a report, there is a high probability that the mineral resource grade estimate will not be realistic.

Sometimes these buried pipes or utility tunnels are deep underground and interfere with the foundation of new structure. It is highly probable that a pile foundation is placed near an existing underground buried pipe or utilities tunnel and may influence its load bearing capacity. Hence, estimation of reduce load bearing capacity of the pile foundation placed near the existing buried conduit or utility tunnel is a complex soil-buried structure interaction problem. It is further complicated owing to uncertainty in estimation of geotechnical parameters of foundation soil due to measurement and testing errors, inherent soil variability and model transation. Under such circumstances, load bearing capacity is best assessed in probabilistic framework or through reliability analysis. The present study demonstrates how concept of response surface method (RSM) in conjunction with Numerical Analysis and First Order Second Moment (FOSM) methods can be combined to per the reliability analysis. The study answers the following question “reliability in reduction in the load bearing capacity of single pile placed near the existing underground pipe or utilities tunnel”. It is demonstrated that the approach provides first hand ination on the reduction in the load bearing capacity and then estimate the reliability of that estimation in terms of an index called Reliability Index (). Such preliminary investigation can be useful for advocating the detailed analysis as well as in the decision making for relocation of pile foundation.

"The authors were tasked with introducing safe and efficient drilling and blasting practices to a small artisanal mine located in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. The current mining methods employed at the mine are inefficient as rockbreaking is conducted utilizing hammer and chisel, or by drilling and blasting with no understanding of the rockbreaking process. The paper discusses the drill and blast cycle, as well as the associated activities necessary to support the mining cycle. The challenges and critical aspects in implementing drill and blast activities are discussed, as well as some of the technical aspects, i.e.drilling pattern, initiation and timing of the blast, and handling of misfires. Ancillary issues such as ventilation, training, communication, effective planning, logistics, and human relations are also examined. IntroductionRockbreaking accounts for 60% of the direct mining costs in small-scale mining. When drilling and blasting practices are poorly implemented the process becomes inefficient and dangerous. The introduction of a proven drill and blast system to artisanal mining offers a number of challenges, with safety being considered the backbone of any sustainable operation and a standard that cannot be compromised.The paper is based on a project at an artisanal cassiterite (tin) mining operation in a small village in the Kayonza District in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. A drill and blast programme utilizing industry best practice was introduced at an underground development end; a raise developed at an inclination of 23 degrees. The underground working is accessed via a 17 degree incline shaft with an operating length of 105 m and serviced by a single drum winder. The winder operates at a speed of about 3.5 m/min hoisting two 1 t wagons from the bottom of the incline to surface for tipping (Figure 1)."

Commonly used predictors of ground vibration from blasting, being linear in log-log plot, do not model the underlying physics of wave attenuation. Amplitude of the wave decays with distance due to geometrical spreading and inelastic attenuation producing a nonlinear carve in log-log scale. The nolinear decay of seismic waves has also been observed from non-explosive sources, such as, pile driving, drop hammer, traffic, etc. The improved predictors, by explicitly taking these two mechanisms into consideration, model the data trend extremely well at all distance ranges. Actual field data from different studies have been used to validate the improved models.
