The SnO2/CdS/CdTe thin film solar cells were fabricated on glass substrates by using the spray pyrolysis (SP) technique for the deposition of the SnO2 and CdS layers and vacuum evaporation for the CdTe layer. The transmittance curves were used to investigate the interdiffusion in the two interfacial regions SnO2/CdS and CdS/CdTe by taking the first derivative of the absorbance as a function of wavelength. The appearance of new bandgaps around the bandgaps of SnO2:F, CdS:In and CdTe layers is a strong evidence on the interdiffusion in the two interfacial regions and/or the formation of quantum dots.

Production of mercury from the cinnabar deposits of the southwestern Arkansas mercury district began in 1931 , reached its peak in 1942 , and ended in 1944. The mines are now idle . Virtually all the cinnabar was obtained from deposits in a belt , about a mile wide , of steeply dipping sandstone beds in the overriding blocks of three thrust faults . The belt was productive for a length of about 27 miles eastward from eastern Howard County, through Pike County, into Clark County . During the early life of the district, Federal agencies watched and recorded its progress as a contributor of a strategic metal, and later, during the war, conducted investigations designed to advance its development . In 1941 , the Bureau of Mines and the U. S. Geological Survey cooperated in investigations on eight mineralized areas in the western part of the district , to wit : Hales mine , U. S. mine , Lulu Bell property, Hopkins Hill , East Gap Ridge , Gap Ridge , Parnell Hill , and Section 17 mine area . U. S. Geological Survey prepared both surface and mine maps and designated the areas to be investigated ; the Bureau did the drilling , trenching, and sampling involved in the investigations . Twelve holes , aggregating 3,539 feet of bore , were diamond drilled on six properties ; 5,309 linear feet of surface trenches were bulldozed in six areas and 19 samples taken from them ; and 86 underground channel samples were cut in two adits on one property . In 1944 , the Bureau of Mines measured mine dumps and calcine dumps in the district in an investigation of their mercury content . Two mine dumps and one calcine dump were sampled . The data pertinent to the work done by the Bureau are included in this report .

South Africa is a leading player in the international ferro alloys industry. Historical factors that have contributed to this dominant position include an abundance of natural resources and relatively low cost electricity. A number of relatively recent developments are potentially threatening this position. These include new legislation affecting the mining and minerals industry, a shortage of some types of suitable reductants, depletion of surplus electricity generation capacity with resultant threat of real escalation of electricity prices and pressure resulting from the recent strengthening of the South African Rand. The industry is addressing these challenges in a number of ways to ensure long-term viability. Some of these measures include investments in more efficient technologies that have economy of scale benefits and are less dependent on expensive reductants and electricity. Local macro-economic impacts include new legislation regarding ownership of enter-prises, mineral rights and royalties on mineral sales, development plans for port and rail infrastructure, as well as initiatives to expand electricity generation and coke production capacity. The fundamentals for being a successful ferro alloy producer are still largely in place for South African producers. Therefore the South African ferro alloy industry will remain competitive and is well placed for continued growth in line with the international growth in ferro alloy demand. The industry should emerge leaner, more efficient and ready to respond to any future demands of the industry. This paper will cover the present status of the industry, the factors that are impacting thereon and a view on its future outlook.

This circular is the first of a series of publications describing uranium mining on the Colorado Plateau. Later circulars are planned in which exploration, development, and mining methods and costs will be described after a detailed study of various operations. Because of the introductory character of this paper, those well-publicized phases of the industry such as geography, history, prospecting, and exploration are described but briefly. Primarily, attention has been devoted to the general problems that are encountered in mining ore bodies and to the factors that affect the selection of development and mining methods. Those familiar with mining may class the information contained in this paper as elementary; however, its inclusion is considered necessary for the completeness of the series of papers. It will also serve as a source of information for people who are interested in uranium but are unfamiliar with mining.

We have had occasion to produce wire of Np-237 in small diameters for use in some chemical experiments. Since the mechanical metallurgy of neptunium has not been investigated extensively, it seems desirable to report our successful extrusion technique. Because of the neptunium activity and its attendant health hazard the experimental work was done in glove boxes and related equipment also used for Pu-239. At room temperature a phase neptunium' is a hard (Dph -355) orthorhombic metal of high density (p = 20.45 g per cu cm). a neptunium transforms2 to tetragonal ß neptunium at about 280°C and this in turn transforms to bcc y neptunium at about 577°C. The y phase melts at about 637°C. A temperature of 340° to 345°C was selected for the extrusion, this temperature being a compromise be- tween a possible advantage of working with the presumably more plastic cubic y phase above 577°C and the risk of having the neptunium react with the alloy steel die to form the low-melting Fe-Np eutectic. A 0.75-in.-long, 0.26-in.-diameter ingot of good-purity* Np-237 was extruded by the direct *C = 230 ppm, Pu = 200 ppm, thirty-five metallic elements below limit of detection by spectrographic methods. process through flat-face orifices to form several sizes of wire ranging from 0.010 to 0.030 in. in diameter. Molybdenum disulfide was used as the die lubricant. The extrusion was done in a vacuum of about 10-4 torr to reduce reaction of the neptunium with atmospheric gases. British workers3 at Harwell have extruded neptunium under similar conditions. The force required to extrude 0.010-in.-diameter wire at the rate of 4 in. per min was 6000 lb, as measured with an electrical load cell. Wire 0.020 in. in diameter was extruded with a force of 4700 lb at a rate of 2 in. per min, and wire 0.030 in. in diameter was extruded with a force of 4000 lb at a rate of 1.3 in. per min. From 1999 through 2008, groundfall events resulted in 75 fatalities, 5,941 injuries and 13,774 noninjury roof falls in U.S. underground coal mines, according to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). A comprehensive analysis of these events was conducted to better understand where and why these incidents occurred. The first segment of the study used the MSHA database to evaluate groundfall injury rate trends related to mining method, year, locality, seam thickness, mine size, coalbeds and seasonal effects. In the past decade, roof fall injury rates have dropped 50%, but rib fall injury rates have remained constant. Room-and-pillar mines had a roof fall injury rate that was nearly 2.5 times the longwall rate. High groundfall rates occurred in the Illinois Basin, a finding that correlates with other studies that have shown that roof rock in the Illinois Basin is weaker than that in the central Appalachian coalfields. Finally, noninjury roof fall rates in the eastern and central United States were found to be 50% higher from July through September, possibly because of the changes in humidity levels that may cause shale mine roofs to deteriorate. The second segment of the study evaluated the root causes of failure by reviewing all MSHA groundfall fatality reports for 1999-2008. Pillar recovery was the leading cause of groundfall fatalities (19%), followed by rib falls, roof skin falls and traveling under unsupported roof (16% each). Defining prominent ground control incident trends and hazards will identify areas where additional study is needed and where innovative solutions need to be developed to reduce these severe occupational hazards.

The extractive industry has the potential to impact the health and well-being of workers, families and surrounding communities. In the current environment of social performance, project planning considers that activities should be conducted in the best environmentally, socially and economically acceptable way across the development cycle (i.e. from exploration ? post-closure). In this context, health impacts of mining can be mapped and extend over the Life of the Community and can encompass worker injury and disease, exposure to communicable and non-communicable diseases, and health outcomes specific to family and community health and well-being outside the fence. To contribute to an emerging field focused on Health and the Extractive Industry, this paper reviews and compares health activities extracted from social and environmental reports published by selected major mining, oil and gas companies with operations in Australia and Canada. The objective of this review is to map corporate approaches to public health management across our previously developed Life-of-Mine within Life-of-Community (LOMLOC) framework in order to identify and compare trends and behaviour in corporate health investments across the project cycle, as well as identify the level of prevention targeted by this investment activity (i.e. primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of detrimental health impact). With the extractive industry facing ongoing rapid growth worldwide, this paper provides preliminary comparative information about corporate health spending by some companies in Australia and Canada. This information serves as a resource for minerals industry managers, civil society and regulators regarding current health management approaches in this sector.

"Abstract-Detailed petrographical and geochemical studies have been carried out on the igneous and sedimentary rocks in the Omai area, part of the Paleoproterozoic Barama-Mazaruni greenstone belt, Guyana. The stratigraphic succession at Omai begins with basalts, associated with mafic-ultramafic intrusives and poorly-sorted conglomerates; these are overlain by andesites and quartzfeldspar porphyries, with pelites and tuffaceous sediments at the top. The volcanic-sedimentary succession was intruded by a quartz-monzodioritic stock (Omai stock) and granophyric rhyolite dikes. Several generations of mafic dikes were intruded discontinuously from the Mesoproterozoic to the Permo-Triassic. Volcanic rocks range in composition from subalkaline basalt to high-silica rhyolites, with a gap between 60% to 70% SiO2, which suggests the suite is bimodal. Major, trace, and rare earth element criteria were used to subdivide the rocks into tholeiitic and calc-alkaline types. The tholeiitic rocks are characterized by flat to moderately sloping chondrite-normalized REE patterns. On the basis of immobile trace-element ratios, the tholeiitic mafic rocks from Omai have characteristics of immature intra-oceanic island arcs, or of E-MORB basalts affected by a strong arc signature, as is commonly reported for back-arc basin basalts. The andesites, quartz-feldspar porphyries, rhyolites and quartz monzodioritic stock are calc-alkaline, with strongly sloping REE patterns, enrichments in the large-ion lithophile elements, and depletions in the heavy REE and high-field-strength elements, features which are typical of more mature island-arc settings.At Omai, two types of gold-bearing veins can be distinguished: vein sets (± stockworks) and tension veins, both post-dating the regional metamorphic peak at the level they were emplaced. The relationship between the gold mineralization and its host lithologies does not seem to be genetic. Rather, the emplacement of mineralization was strongly influenced by the rheological contrasts between the intrusive/subvolcanic bodies and the volcanic/sedimentary country rocks. These contrasts helped to focus the regional stress upon the more competent intrusive subvolcanic bodies, resulting in brittle fracturing, and therefore in greatly enhanced permeability to hydrothermal fluids. The Omai gold mineralization can be classified as late tectonic, with its emplacement controlled by the last brittle to brittle-ductile stages of the Trans-Amazonian orogeny."

This circular presents Part III-A of a series reviewing the literature on effects of breathing dusts with special reference to silicosis; it deals with the economic and legal aspects of dust diseases in industry; Part III-B will contain data on the status and cost of compensation for silicosis, Parts I and II of the series have been issued as Information Circulars 6835, 6840, and 6848; Part I defines and classifies dusts, indicates sources of exposure, and describes the physiological effects of breaching dusts; Part II-A discusses the principal dust factors producing pulmonary pathology and methods of determination of dust in air; and Part II-B presents data on the engineering and medical control in the prevention of dust diseases and general recommendations for their control in industry. A summary and general conclusions will complete the series.

The mainline running tunnels for Legacy Way comprise two tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven tunnels. Both TBM drives commenced at the Launch Portal adjacent the Mt Coot-tha Road. Excessive surface settlement arising from tunnelling would have had a significant impact to the road infrastructure. The geological structure above the tunnel springline is a mixture of fill, residual soil and weak rock. Given the combination of low ground cover and weak ground materials, along with the use of an open face TBM, an oversize pipe umbrella system has been installed above the tunnels. This pipe umbrella system is similar to that commonly adopted in conventional mined excavation support in soft ground except that the steel pipes are substantially larger in geometry and filled with concrete. It is acknowledged that similar systems with oversize pipe umbrella have been adopted elsewhere in the world in other projects. These systems often comprise of a full arch formed by conjoining oversize steel pipes (in contact only). By aligning the pipes in contact, the arching behaviour of the steel pipe would have been enhanced. However, this poses a degree of construction difficulty due to excavation and installation method of the pipes. The Legacy Way pipe umbrella system only consists of a partial arch at the tunnel crown and each pipe is spaced approximately 1200 mm apart with 900 mm diameter pipe, leaving a gap of approximately 300 mm between pipes. A reinforced concrete portal block was used to support the exposed ends of the pipes.This paper reviews the design analysis, the recorded deflections from the pipe umbrellas and surface monitoring during TBM launch and revisits the analysis using the newly available RS3 program, from Rocscience for 3D analysis of geotechnical structures.CITATION:Norbert, M and O’Connor, D, 2014. This report is one of a series published by the Federal Bureau of Mines to describe methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The Navajo Uranium Division of Kerr-McGee Oil Industries, Inc., mines uranium from several deposits of carnotite-type ores, which lie buried in the Lukachukai Mountains on the Navajo Indian Reservation, Apache County, Ariz. The country is rugged and isolated Constructing and maintaining roads has been a continuous task. The ore bodies occur within the Salt Wash member of the Jurassic Morrison formation and are similar to other such deposits on the plateau. The current mining activity in the Lukachukai Mountains is a result of uranium-ore discoveries in 1949, although the Navajos undoubtedly knew of the outcrops of yellow uranium minerals long before that time. The ruggedness of the country and the heavy soil cover over much of the surface hampered prospecting, but probably the main reason the ore was not found sooner is that no one took the trouble to look for it in the Lukachukai Mountains.

Introduction The Horne mine, the property of Noranda Mines, Limited, has in the last six years become one of Canada's leading gold and copper producers. Since the smelter was blown-in during December, 1927, up to the end of 1933, it has produced approximately 1,200,000 oz. of gold and 35O,OOO,OOO lb. of copper. The property is situated within an area occupied entirely by pre-Cambrian rocks and characterized by the complexity of rock types and structures common in such terrain. But apart from this the mine also presents other features of unusual interest in the size, number, and variety of the ore-bodies, the mineralogical associations, and the rather exceptional values both in gold and copper. It is not surprising, therefore, that a study of the geology of the mine should bring to light many interesting problems. The present paper summarizes, as concisely as possible, the results of such a study. Actually, it is a much abridged version of a more comprehensive and detailed paper completed by the writer a year ago (1), but embodying certain corrections and additional data made possible as a result of further development at the mine and of field work carried out during the summer of 1933. Owing to limitations of space, the paper is, in the main, a presentation of conclusions arrived at in the course of the study. Much of the supporting evidence cited in the thesis referred to has, of necessity, been omitted here.

Introduction Although the equilibrium conditions of the copper-tin alloys have been the subject of a ?great amount of research, the equilibrium diagram is still in doubt. The first systematic investigation of the series was made in 1894 by Le Chatelier, who published a freezing-point curve. In 1895, Roberts-Austen and Stansfield published the complete liquidus and partial solidus curves, which they modified somewhat in 1897. Their liquidus as given in 1897 is essentially that accepted today (Figure 3). Haycock and Neville also published a liquid us curve in 1897. In 1898, William Campbell published a series of micrographs showing the changes in microstructure which accompanied the thermal changes of Stansfield? s diagram. The classic work on the bronze series was published by Heycock and Neville in 1903. Their diagram was based on both thermal and microscopic evidence, and is the first for this series of alloys which can be considered nearly complete. Further, it was the first bronze diagram in which any attempt was made to apply the phase rule in the interpretation of the thermal and microscopic results. That portion of Heycock and Neville's diagram covered by the present work is reproduced in Figure 7.

With the great increasing use of nickel metal hydride batteries recently, the waste of this kind batteries have been paid for close consideration. For the main reason that the waste of the batteries contained precious metals and lanthanide which cost great lose. This paper introduces the pyrometallurgical process of recovering nickel and cobalt from the waste of the nickel metal hydride batteries. Particularly, the waste for the process was from factory during the producing program. The use of designed solvent to divide nickel and cobalt in melted state from the waste is described. Also, the result of the nickel and cobalt and melted gangue that mainly consist of lanthanide oxide are included in details. The aim of the paper is to find out a simple and feasible way to reuse waste from nickel metal hydride batteries.

End-of-life Electronic and Electrical Equipment, o_cially called WEEE, is unjustly regarded as mainly a waste management problem. What is structurally overlooked is the enormous resource impact of these devices. EEE rep- resents a tremendous metal resource, which should be uti- lized through e_ective recycling, which has a much lower environmental footprint than primary production. The actual amount of end-of-life EEE recycled today is embar- rassingly low since insu_cient EEE is collected and part of the collected EEE is exported to developing countries, where it is largely not entering o_cial recycling systems. To achieve a global recycling society issues like technol- ogy, economics, life cycle structure, stakeholder aware- ness and legislation have to be addressed in a global, co-operative manner so that sustainable closed product cycles can be obtained. Requirements for a "global re- cycling society" are de_ned to address today's reality of global ows of used consumer products, taking into ac- count the likely needs of the future.

Beneficiation of coal is a water intensive process, and the water is recovered in downstream operations in the high rate thickener (HRT) and vacuum belt filtration (VBF). Clean coal particles entering the HRT have an inherent tendency to enter the overflow because they are extremely fine and hydrophobic. Hence, flocculants (polymers) are used to floc the ultrafine particles so that they settle and enter the underflow. Ultrafine coal particles (−37 μ), which are highly hydrophobic, if present in the stream, will not be efficiently captured by using flocculants alone. This is observed in the normal plant operation at one of the beneficiation plants in the Jharia region, Jharkhand, India. Approximately 6–7% of the feed to the HRT enters the over flow (supernatant water). Hence, this amount of clean coal particles is not recovered and account for production losses. A comprehensive settling and dewatering test work was conducted with clean coal slurry using several commercially available reagents. Studies were also done on different combinations of reagents, including coagulants and surfactants along with flocculants, to improve the settling behavior of the coal particles. The reagents were assessed based on their performance with respect to settling rates, overflow water clarity, and compaction of the underflow solids. Emphasis was given to the ability of the reagents in compacting thickener underflow to higher densities so that maximum water could be recovered from the thickener. Pretreatment of highly hydrophobic coal slurry with a combination of coagulant and surfactant followed by flocculation showed very good settling characteristics with clear overflow.

NO reasonably well-informed person believes that the role of minerals, both metallic and nonmetallic, will be any less important in the future than it has been in the past. The contrary is true. Industrialization is based on mineral resources and man's ability to make use of them. A nation's standard of living, its political and military power, will continue to depend largely upon the extent to which it is industrialized-and minerals are the raw materials both of the machine and the power to run the machine. Minerals are also the raw materials of human health and stamina. The world's healthiest, most vigorous, and most long-lived peoples have always been those that have lived in regions of the globe where the earth is rich, and kept rich, in the phosphates and other minerals required for the production of the so-called growth foods. Only a small proportion of the land surface of the globe is suitable under any circumstances for large-scale production of these and other essential foods. As things stand, only a part of this land is capable of such production either because the soil minerals have been exhausted by cultivation, or because they never existed in the soil in sufficient quantities.

Fracturing of rock at low stress levels can be a source of unexpected problems in rock engineering: • the resulting instability can be a safety hazard; • in very brittle rocks it may be associated with violent failure of the rock and strainbursting (rockbursting); • it usually leads to an unexpected requirement for rock support, with time and cost implications; • in rock boring projects, it may result in fracture of the rock ahead of the bored face and in the walls of the bore behind the face. This may lead to cutter head vibration, increased cutter wear and consequently decreased performance and increased costs. Examples of situations in which fracturing of rock at very low stress levels has been observed will be described. This will include details or estimates of the in situ stress magnitudes and the rock strengths involved. Cette étude représente la base du travail de recherche effectué sur le phénomène. ißbildung im Gestein unter niedrigen Stressbedingung kann eine mögliche Ursache sein für unerwartet auftretende Probleme in der Felsmechaniklehre: • Die resultierende Instabilität stellt ein mögliches Sicherheitsrisiko dar; • In sehr sprödem Gestein kann es verbunden sein mit einem plötzlichen und gewaltsamen Zerfall des Gesteins; • In den meisten Fällen ist eine nicht eingeplante Gesteinsabstützung erforderlich, und damit ein Zeit- und Kostenaufwand verbunden; • Bei Bohrungsprojekten kann es dazu führen, daß es während des Bohrvorganges zu einer Rißbildung im Gestein hinter und vor der gebohrten Felswand kommt. Dies kann Bohrkopfvibrationen, eine erhöhte Bohrkopfabnutzung und folglich eine Bohrleistungssenkung, sowie Kostenerhöhung zur Folge haben. Das Phenomen von Gesteinsrißbildung unter niedrigen Stressbedingung wird anhand von einigen dokumentierten Beispielen erörtert. Diese beinhalten zudem Details oder Schätzungen bezüglich der Stärke des in situ Stressfeldes, sowie der gegebenen Gesteinsstärken. Die mit diesem Beitrag dokumentierten Ergebnisse formen eine Grundlage zur weiteren Forschung dieses Phenomens.
