O laser é uma ferramenta flexível e poderosa com muitas aplicações relevantes na indústria, principalmente na área de soldagem. Os lasers de hoje fornecem à indústria de soldagem soluções tecnicas a muitos problemas, e além de substituírem a soldagem convencional já estabelecida, ainda apresentam maior produtividade. O presente trabalho estudou o metal de solda do aço inoxidável duplex UNS S32205 empregado na indústria de petróleo e gás natural, analisando a influência da variação da largura temporal nas características microestruturais do cordão de solda obtido por soldagem com laser pulsado de Nd:YAG. Os resultados mostraram que a dimensão da zona termicamente afetada é extremamente pequena e a microestrutura do metal de solda apresenta menor fração volumétrica de austenita em relação aos processos convencionais.

Recent theoretical, experimental, and field studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines suggest that rock failures may be predicted and, in some instances, controlled. Theoretical studies that were later corroborated by laboratory and field studies predict that a seismic anomaly will precede rock bursts and/or roof falls in mines. The seismic anomaly is predicted to consist of an increase in the number of seismic events occurring in the immediate vicinity where the failure 1s nucleated. This increase will then be followed by a dramatic decrease of seismicity in a broad region that surrounds the location of the impending failure. The dimensions of this region allow a preliminary estimate of the time to failure (measured from the time the seismicity increase began) as well as an estimate of the energy that will be released at the instant of failure. Field observations indicating that this predicted behavior does precede rock bursts and a roof fall are presented in this report. Implications of results to the problem of failure control in mines that experience massive rock failures are discussed.

The Burra Burra Mine is situated in complexly folded Torrensian dolomites and limestones forming the faulted axial region of a major anticline. The orebody mined was largely of secondary origin and confined between two faults, Kingston's on the west and Tinline's on the east. The orebody occurred at the junction between cherty dolomites and a clastic limestone with a large mass of marble breccia along its western margin. Secondary ore consisted of carbonates and oxides in the breccia and the ore bed and detrital copper minerals deposited as part of a clastic breccia in sinkholes and solution cavities in the dolomites and ore beds.Primary sulphides occur disseminated in the marble breccia and in stratiform habit in the ore bed. Kingston's so-called "lode" may be mineralized marble breccia.The marble breccia appears to be of diapiric or sedimentary origin and there is evidence to support a sedimentary origin for some of the copper sulphides. No igneous rocks have been discovered within 20 miles of the mine and any hydrothermal activities were probably at comparatively low temperature. The possibility of extensive stratiform and disseminated copper sulphide mineralization in the marble breccia and ore bed requires testing by further drilling and geophysical surveys.INTRODUCTIONThe re-interpretation of Burra Burra geology and ore formation discussed in this paper resulted from a comprehensive investigation of the mine and its surrounding district begun in December 1961 and in progress at the time of writing. (February 1963). The decision to investigate Burra Burra was taken after a thorough examination of records and reports of all non-ferrous metal deposits throughout South Australia and was given impetus by a report by Thomson (1963) suggesting a sedimentary origin for the copper mineralization. Although the author does not concur fully with Thomson's interpretation there is no doubt that sedimentary processes have played an important part in the formation of the Burra Burra copper deposit, nor is there any doubt that igneous activity played no part.

O objetivo do trabalho é estudar a viabilidade da realização do tratamento superficial via implantação iônica por imersão em plasma (3IP) de nitrogênio de chapas de nióbio soldadas previamente com feixe de laser, para formação de camadas de nitretos sobre superfície do material base, zona termicamente afetada (ZTA) e do cordão de solda. Os resultados obtidos são discutidos levando-se em consideração a influência do tratamento nas alterações apresentadas pelo material tratado. Os resultados mostram uma significativa alteração na superfície do material, em termos de composição química, evidenciando a formação de nitretos de nióbio sobre esta superfície. Em geral, os nitretos de materiais refratários apresentam propriedades desejáveis para aplicações que envolvem temperatura elevadas de trabalho como: estabilidade térmica, elevado ponto de fusão, boa resistência à oxidação; além de apresentarem elevada dureza e baixas taxas de desgaste e corrosão. Em virtude do aquecimento do substrato, durante o tratamento, observam-se mudanças microestruturais no material tratado. Tais alterações microestruturais, nas diferentes regiões analisadas, mostram-se benéficas na homogeneidade dos valores de dureza apresentados, especialmente na região do cordão de solda e material de base. A redução da dispersão dos valores de dureza entre o cordão de solda, a zona termicamente afetada (ZAC) e o material de base podem minimizar a presença de regiões com concentrações de tensões, melhorando a resistência mecânica do material quando submetidos a esforços mecânicos, como tração uniaxial.

The commercial life of a mineral product can be long, but like hitech electronic and software products that soar in sales one day to become obsolete and forgotten a few months or years, mineral products have a life cycle. They are invented, commercialized and eventually decline and disappear from commerce. Diatomite and perlite are produced from mined minerals, but almost none of the products in these industries spring from the earth in finished form. Straight calcined diatomite was invented over 100 years ago and flux calcined diatomite just a few years later. The expansion properties of perlite were discovered and first exploited about 75 years ago. Some applications for diatomite have disappeared or currently face competition from newer products. Dry cleaning was once the second-largest application for diatomite but disappeared over 30 years ago. Both the beer and wine filtration markets for diatomite face increased competition from membrane filters. A pipeline of new, proprietary products is critical to the future of the industry.

O parafuso Tirefond é um importante componente da via permanente ferroviária. Ele é um componente de fixação responsável por fixar a placa de apoio que, por sua vez, garante a estabilidade dos trilhos. Este componente é comumente fabricado no Brasil por processos de conformação mecânica a quente de aços baixo carbono. Entretanto, com o aumento da carga transportada por eixo de locomotiva nos últimos anos, este componente tem falhado de forma recorrente em serviço. Com o objetivo de entender os efeitos dos filetes do parafuso sobre o comportamento mecânico do componente, este trabalho apresenta um estudo sobre a susceptibilidade do parafuso à concentração de tensões sob carregamento estático. Análises químicas por espectrometria de emissão óptica, análises microestruturais por microscopia óptica, ensaios de tração e dureza foram realizados. Por meio da aplicação de modelos computacionais, foi possível determinar a distribuição de tensões ao longo do parafuso, assim como entender as principais causas destas falhas recorrentes. Fazendo-se uso de modelos matemáticos de mecânica de fratura, associados a simulações computacionais de carregamento estático, foram propostas modificações no projeto original do parafuso que prometem melhorar o seu desempenho em serviço.

Magnetite deposits with distinctive ¦ actinolite ¦ apatite-bearing gangue and spatially-extensive sodic-calcic wall rock alteration occur in both Proterozoic metamorphic terrains and Mesozoic-Tertiary magmatic arcs. Examples from both settings constitute significant sources of iron ore (egKiruna, Sweden; El Romeral, Chile) and some host major Cu-Au deposits that have a local association with K-silicate alteration (eg Cloncurry district, NW Queensland; Copiapo district, Chile). A growing body of evidence points to a hydrothermal origin for these systems involving high temperature, low S oxidised fluids. The Cloncurry magnetite-Cu-Au deposits are products of the local structurally channelised influx of a specialised high salinity ore fluid into larger-scale alteration systems developed during pluton emplacement at greater depths than those associated with subvolcanic (porphyry) Cu-Au deposits. The geological characteristics of deposits in magmatic arcs are consistent with a similar mode of origin albeit in rather different tectonic settings.

An incestigation has been made of the effects of heat treatment and alloy composition on the long-time stress-rupture properties and structural stability of the similar nickel-base alloys Udimet-500, Lrdimet-520, and Udimet-700. Rupture test data are presented at stresses ranging from 4 to 50 ksi at temperatures from 1450° to 1900°F for times up to 14,000 hr. Ductility response is emphasized. Optical and electron tnicroscopy were complemented by X-ray diffraction analyses of extracted phases to relate microstructural stability to the observed rupture properties. Particular attention is paid to Udimet-520 since structural characteristics of this alloy appear to vary somewhat from its sister alloys. Both cast and wrought performance of Lrdimet-500 are discussed. The computerized PHACOMP calculational technique, based on electron-vacuncy theory, is discussed and related to structural stability where appropriate. Electron microscopy and microprobe techniques were used to conduct evaluation of the oxidation characteristics of Udimet-500 exposed in air for 16,100 hr. The steady advance in strength and reliability of nickel-base superalloys continues to be one of the high points of modern metallurgy. The stress capability of these materials has increased steadily, allowing higher and higher operating temperatures in the highly sophisticated aircraft and industrial gas turbines now on the market. The attendant increase in efficiency, of course, means greatly improved power output. Gas turbines for industrial and marine use have long been designed with these objectives paramount the usual design requirements in terms of time of service being 100,000 hr. High-efficiency, long-life aircraft such as the supersonic transport require superalloy engine materials with high-strength and long-time structural stability. Thus, materials studied for and operating experience from industrial gas turbines provide a good reservoir from which technology of high value to the SST program can be drawn. This study is one such case. Three prominent nickel-base super alloys—Udimet 500, Udimet 520, and Udimet 700 were extensively evaluated for industrial gas turbine bucket use. Particular attention was directed toward structural stability as a requisite property. Within the present context, structural stability is defined as freedom from the propensity to form strength-robbing or embrittling phases such as u,p,x,or Laves, and the ability to maintain useful rupture strength and ductility throughout design life. MATERIALS The three alloys, cast Udimet 500 (U-500C), Udimet 520, and Udimet 700, were chosen for detailed evaluation based on preliminary studies which indicated that U-500C and U-520 possessed comparable rupture strength capabilities, and that U -700 had a greater strength capability but somewhat poorer ductility than wrought U-500. The nominal compositions of the three alloys, along with the compositions of the heats investigated, are presented in Table I. PROCEDURE Dimensionally rejected U-520 buckets from Special Metals Corp. heat 63370 were heat-treated using the four cycles delineated in Table 11. Cycle A was investigated to determine the effects of a shortened 1700°F primary age. Cycle B was considered a "standard" treatment. Cycle C investigated a higher solution temperature in combination with a shortened primary age, while cycle D assessed the effect of the higher solution temperature alone. These heat treatments were designed to produce optimum combinations of rupture strength and ductility through maximum y' development, the development of a y' grain boundary cushion, promotion of MC carbide degeneration reactions, and agglomeration of resultant M23CB. Since one of the premises of the evaluation of U-520 was that rupture strength would be equivalent to U-500, forged U-500 buckets from Special Metals Corp. heat 62916 were heat-treated with cycles A, B, and C to provide comparison. The heat-treated structures of U-520 and U-500 are illustrated in the 8700 times electron micrographs of Fig. l. The U-700 tested was all from 3-in.-diam hot-rolled and centerless-ground rod from Special Metals Corp. heat 2-1426. Two heat-treatment cycles were employed, E and F of Table 11. Cycle E is a standard four-step, triple-age treatment intended to provide an optimum match of strength and ductility through well-developed matrix and grain boundary y', as recommended by U-700 vendors. Treatment F is a shortened , single-age cycle which could provide a significant processing cost reduction should adequate strength and ductility be maintained. Following heat treatment, rupture specimens of U-500 and U-520 were machined from the buckets and tested. Standard rupture bars of U -700 were machined from the heat-treated rod and rupture-tested. Failed and withdrawn rupture bars were prepared and examined by optical and electron microscopy. Select specimens were electrolytically digested, and the residues analyzed for carbide and topologically close-packed phases using CrKa or CoKo radiation. Over the past several decades, the use of cement-based grouts using ultra fine cement as a replacement for portland cement has begun to gain acceptance as an alternative to chemical solution grouts used in permeation grouting. The amount of information currently available on grouts made with ultrafine cement is limited. The authors used a previously developed field testing program to perform additional tests to evaluate the permeation performance of portland and ultrafine cement-based grouts. For the first time, the 2003 testing program included an attempt to determine the 28 day compressive strength of the sand permeated by the grout.

The 2003 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) was held at the New Orleans Marriott, New Orleans, LA, June 15-18. The New Orleans conference was the 16th since the RETC was formed in 1971. This year’s conference was sponsored by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc.(SME), with co-sponsorship of the Construction Institute of ASCE. Attendance at the meeting was 1,178, a conference record. This was up significantly from the771 attendees at the 2001 meeting in San Diego, CA. The RETC was formed to “advance the engineering and scientific knowledge of rapid underground excavation and tunneling through interdisciplinary meetings, publications, technical-educational exhibitions and encouragement of research.” The RETC conferences are now held every other year. They provide an opportunity for individuals to meet with designers, contractors and manufacturers associated with the tunneling industry to share experiences in all phases of tunnel design and construction.

"Over the last decades, many authors have shown the importance of froth in the flotation process. Mineral recovery is related to froth recovery and flotation. Selectivity is affected by froth characteristics, especially structure and loading. The characteristics of froth textures could therefore be used for diagnosing flotation.Machine imaging, especially image texture analysis, allows on-line measurement of important froth characteristics and process state classification. The measured characteristics include froth texture, loading and stability indicators. To extract information from images, texture analysis tools are used as well as a block-matching algorithm (BMA). For process state classification, images are analyzed with the same tools and clustering is done with multivariate data analysis algorithms.Two case studies, Brunswick Mine Concentrator Cu/Pb circuit and LaRonde Mine Zn circuit, are presented to show that these indicators may be used for diagnosis and control. The influence of manipulated variables on measured froth features is shown as well as the relationship between froth characteristics, mineral recovery and flotation selectivity.INTRODUCTIONImaging is a way to depict abstract characteristics of a scene or an object; it is often related to other types of scientific observations, chemical component concentrations, for example (Geladi and Grahn, 1996). In this paper, the scene is flotation froth. Imaging can be especially useful in applications where it is difficult to obtain the measurements needed for process analysis – froth flotation, for example."

"Instead of using the traditional batch casting process, the CRIMSON [1] (Constrained Rapid Induction Melting Single Shot Up-Casting) method employs a high-powered furnace to melt just enough metal to fill a single mould in a closed crucible. The crucible is transferred to a station for computer-controlled counter gravity filling of the mould for optimum filling and solidification. The CRIMSON method therefore holds the liquid aluminium for a minimum of time drastically reducing the energy losses attributed to holding the metal at temperature. With the rapid melting times achieved, of the order of minutes, there isn’t a long time at temperature for hydrogen to be absorbed or for thick layers of oxide to form. The metal is never allowed to fall under gravity and therefore any oxide formed is not entrained within the liquid. Thus higher quality castings are produced leading to a reduction in scrap rate and reduced overall energy losses.IntroductionEngineers at the University of Birmingham, England, with local company, NTec, have invented a new casting process that will reduce the energy costs of light-metal foundries. The technology, entitled CRIMSON, means that foundries need only heat the quantity of metal required to fill a single mould rather than large batches that use unnecessary energy and create waste. The complete concept of CRIMSON requires a change of philosophy in the approach to casting and requires the user to think holistically in order to reap the full benefits from the process. This paper will discuss the various aspects of energy wastage within the foundry sector and discusses the processes whereby the energy can be reduced. Primarily the author focuses on the aluminium sector but CRIMSON can be applied to many of the non-ferrous “light” alloys. Ferrous materials and non-ferrous “heavy” alloys can also benefit from some of the ideas but not necessarily directly from the application of CRIMSON."

Means of improving the U.S. Bureau of Mines Brattice Window Method have been investigated by Goodyear Aerospace Corporation (GAC). An extensive series of laboratory tests at GAC and a series of tests in three operating coal mines of the Bethlehem Mines Corporation were conducted. The GAC laboratory tests defined the window coefficients and the accuracy of the method using different measuring techniques for a range of window sizes and shapes with window areas from 0.0873 to 4.0 square feet for flow velocities through the windows of from 100 to 1000 FPM. The results indicated that for the range of window sizes and window flow velocities investigated a single window coefficient value can be used with little error for each window size and for each flow direction, for the investigated range of window flow velocities. The mine tests developed techniques for quickly erecting the Temporary Test Stopping (TTS) in a cross-out, making the measurements, taking down the TTS and moving it and the test equipment to the next cross-cut. The time period for the total cycle ranged from 15-45 minutes depending on the properties of the cross-cut's surfaces. The total weight of the TTS and test equipment carried by the two miners conducting the tests was approximately 40 pounds. Correlation was obtained between the sum of the leakage values past 10 consecutive individual stoppings using the brattice window method and the value for the difference in the airway flow values before and after the 10 consecutive stoppings when the value for the sum of the leakages for the 10 was significant when com¬pared to the airway flow values. The mine tests reiterated the importance of using the largest TTS window(s) consistant with making accurate anemometer measurements for the best results with the brattice window method.

One of a series published by the Bureau of Mines covering research investigations in rock drillability, this report of field drilling results extends earlier laboratory findings and provides a relatively simple procedure for predicting percussive drilling rates with reasonable accuracy. Two percussive drills mounted on a truck were used to drill a total of 25 rock types, and the results were used to develop a prediction equation. The equation was tested on a set of unrelated laboratory percussive drilling data, and the comparison between predicted and actual rates is shown in tabular form.

Refractories and slags play a vital role in the production of stainless steel. They are in intimate contact with the steel at temperature, and chemical reactions between the three can and do occur. These interactions can be beneficial, in the case of active tundish and ladle slags, and negative in the case of refractory erosion and slag entrapment. This paper presents the results of both plant trials and laboratory investigations of steel/refractory and slag/refractory interactions. The interaction mechanisms observed are described leading to selection criteria for new refractory products. Keywords: slags, steels, refractories, reaction mechanisms.

AngloGold Ashanti Metallurgy has recently been involved in the successful installation of intelligent, expert control systems on the milling circuits. The benefits of expert systems in these highly interactive circuits are obvious. Existing comminution tools, which have been developed and can now be incorporated into online control, include improved modelling techniques and understanding, robust and competent simulation methods, sampling techniques, and optimization methods. The minerals processing industry has seen the benefits of predominantly research-based centres turning their focus to commercial applications of comminution circuit modelling packages, which in turn can be utilized within expert control systems. Expert mill control has been successfully installed at AngloGold Ashanti South Africa?s Mponeng and Kopanang Gold Plants. Expert control has also been installed at AngloGold Ashanti?s West African Sadiola Mine operation. The implementation of the systems has produced a number of positive outcomes. Plant surveys usually result in the identification of sub-optimal areas, and the control philosophy is then configured to ensure that these areas (along with the entire circuit) are optimized and maintained. Outdated PID loops have generally resulted in oscillatory control with large amplitude deviations from set-point. Significant improvements in SAR Metallurgy operations have been realized, firstly through achieving stability in the load and cyclone control, and secondly through online identification and implementation of optimized set-point conditions for mill mass, discharge density, etc. Soft sensors are configured to accurately estimate parameters that were historically not measurable, viz. breakage rate, mill load condition, onlinekWh/t-75 microns, mill discharge density and cyclone overflow grading. The Mponeng Plant system achieved circuit stability and improved overall grind. The Plant was able to pay back the control installation after 3 months, based on the additional recovery obtained from the finer grind. The system at Kopanang Plant has also resulted in enhanced plant recovery as a result of a finer grind and a lower residue gold content. The payback for this system was calculated at approximately 6 months. AngloGold Ashanti Metallurgy is currently expanding the installation of expert control to its other operations. It is also evaluating the performance of various suppliers of advanced control systems.

As man's need for minerals continues to grow and as the known mineral deposits become depleted, it may be expected that these increased demands will result in greater exploration for additional deposits and at continually increasing depths below the earth's surface. As labor and material costs continue to rise, the need for more economic material handling will be emphasized. The quest for heavier payloads, safely moved at faster speeds from deeper mines, will be vigorously pursued. Strenuous efforts are, therefore, being made in the wire rope industry to develop ropes with greater strength-to-weight ratios than presently available while maintaining the dependability and long life being received from the conventional rope manufactured today. For many years, high quality rope wire has been manufactured from rods of selected steel compositions. Carefully-controlled wire drawing combined with proper heat treatment has resulted in high quality wire and wire rope throughout this period. Refinements in the rod produced from specially-selected high carbon steels combined with the latest improvements in wire drawing and heat treatments have made it possible to manufacture higher strength rope wire of uniform composition and structure that is suitable for use in Special High Strength wire rope.

For the purpose of comparing the amounts of dust produced by various mining operations, samples of atmospheric dust were collected during a complete cycle of drilling, blasting and mucking at or near the face of the Bureau's Mount Weather testing adit while the efficiency of several types of stemming in metal-mine blasting was being investigated. Thermodynamics of Non-Cyanide Gold Solvents The present status of the raw material base in the gold industry requires specific ways to recover gold and silver from ores. Most gold is closely associated with sulfides which require flotation followed by pressure or bacterial oxidation. The next stages of processing usually require using expensive operations for the preparation of leaching. A lot of researchers want to find a new alternative solvent for the extraction of precious metals from these products. According to the authors, one of the best ways is to use sulfur-based solvents (thiosulfate, sulfite, and their various mixtures). Thermodynamics of gold and silver thiosulfate dilution are calculated for conditions: the concentration of Au - 200 mg/L, oxygen - 3.2 mg/L, thiosulfate - 79 mg/L, OH- - 170 mg/L. the general result is the possibility of process remains under standard conditions. (erAu = = 0.035 V, ?G298 = - 29.18 kJ/g-atom ??). Silver with thiosulfate forms two strong complexes: [AgS203]- and [Ag(S203)2]3-. ?G0 = -1027 kJ/mol. The complex [AgS203]- is less stable: ?G0 = 486 kJ/mol. It should be noted that despite the high stability of gold complexes, the sodium thiosulfate may decompose to sulfite and elemental sulfur during the process, especially when heating. Gold is slightly soluble in the sodium sulfite solution, however it forms the strong complex [Au(SO3)2]3-. Depending on the concentration of free S2O32-ions, silver with sodium sulfite forms three complexes: [AgSO3]-, [Ag(SO3)2]3- and [Ag(SO3)3]5-. The dissolution speed of gold in sodium sulfite solution may be in the same range as it is during cyanidation. In this case, a practical application of sulfite process can be also used, especially for the products containing free elemental sulfur. In conclusion, sulfite-thiosulfate gold lixiviants can be used for concentrates after pressure oxidation of the cakes.

Defining the concept of sustainability is an important step for industry and society. It is necessary in order to clarify what it means when debunking the many misinterpretations pervasive in different levels of anthropogenic activities. Essentially, the extractive industry has a harvest of differences. Mining involves the extraction of natural resources which are finite, exhaustible, non-renewable, unsustainable, and pay only once. It is remarkable that the definition of sustainability that we will shortly arrive at has totally different characteristics from the definition accepted throughout society. We categorize nature as having its own destiny which is controlled by its own rules and principles and its own society, and is part of nature; therefore, society depends on nature and not vice versa as the initial focus. To society there are no conditions to humanize nature but only respect nature?s rules. It was a challenge to find simplicity for this task not only for the definition but also for the explanation of this concept specifically, to answer the question, ?what is the true meaning of sustainability?? Finally, we are also able through this definition to provide fuel for wide discussions and stimulate critical thinking to improve such a concept. As a result, we present this definition as the tool for society today and for future generations.
