ABSTRACT: In June 2001, a fatal rockburst affected a longwall face in the Houillères du Bassin de Lorraine (HBL), France. Subsequently, a large operation of in situ stress measurements by overcoring was carried out with two main objectives: providing input data for the back analysis of the dynamic event and characterising the stress field in the next panels to be mined for identifying other potential high-risk zones. This paper makes a synthesis of the results of the overcoring tests performed and discusses those results in connection with the mining context, numerical model predictions, laboratory rock test results and microseismic activity. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im Juni 2001 hat ein Bergschlag eine Kohlengrube des Houillères du Bassin de Lorraine (HBL, Lothringen, Frankreich) schwer beschädigt. Nach diesem Unfall sind Spannungsmessugen durch Überborung durchegeführt worden, mit zwei Hauptziele : 1/ Daten zu liefern für die Retro-analyse des dynamischen Gebirgsschlag und 2/ die Spannungen in den zukünftigen Ausbauen so gut wie möglich zu charakterisieren, um eventuele andere Risikozonen festzustellen. Dieser Artikel stellt eine Synthese der erzielten Ergebnisse vor. Er diskutiert diese Ergebnisse in Verbindung mit dem gesamten Kohlengruben Zusammenhang, mit den Ergebnissen von numerischen Modellierungen, mit der Labor-Charakterisierung und mit der microsismische Überwachung. A general discussion of the structure of the junk automobile recycling system shows that the generation of stripped automobile hulks and scrapped automobiles is price inelastic. As a result, it is extremely difficult for the price mechanism to automatically achieve an equilibrium that will prevent the accumulation of excessive automobile wrecker inventories and vehicle abandonment by the last owners of scrapped cars. The new shredder processing technology and the new portable flattener technology have altered the structure of the junk automobile recycling system. The shredder technology has increased the demand for processed automobile scrap. This increased demand is reflected in higher prices paid for hulks by scrap processors. The portable flattener has reduced the transportation cost of shipping hulks to processors. The two new technologies have eliminated, at least potentially, the net cost of shipping stripped hulks so frequently incurred by wreckers in the past. The elimination of this cost eliminates the economic incentive for excessive wrecker inventories. Unfortunately, the incentive for last owners to abandon their cars does not appear to have been eliminated by the new technologies. The last owner of an automobile with no spare parts value is still likely to incur a cost by delivering his automobile to the recycling system. Although a subsidy payment is probably unnecessary to reduce excessive wrecker inventories, such a payment might be one solution to the problem of automobile abandonment. However, there are a wide variety of subsidy programs that could be introduced. Before any Federal subsidy program is introduced to reduce automobile abandonment, it is recommended that the program be tested on a limited basis in many different parts of the country.

"This paper suggests that with the settlement of long-term contracts of fifteen years' duration, with prospects of extension, the coal mining industry has, for the first time, a complete commercial justification for large-scale planning.The labour costs of coal production over past years are analyzed and, with the acceptance of the premise that the basic shift rates are certain to rise in the years to come, the paper suggests that forward planning should provide &r capital investment to make a traditionally labour-dense industry into a capital-dense industry.Automated methods of manpower deployment and timekeeping and the monitoring of all equipment back to a central control point are discussed as ail-important means of obtaining maximum utilization of high-cost capital investment.Principles of payment of the work-force, and the utilization of equipment 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the maximum number of days a year, are dealt with as means of achieving maximum capital utilization. Some of the new technical underground and coal preparation problems which will undoubtedly result from the concentration of workings and maximum machine utilization are discussed, and the author makes suggestions as to how these might be solved.In short, the author predicts that if the coal mining industry is prepared to recognize the problems and invest in modern equipment backed by highly trained staff. then the outcome will justify the high capital investment involved. He stresses the importance of human communications in achieving this end."

O laminador a frio de inoxidáveis LB1 da Aperam South America é um laminador Sendzimir reversível que produz materiais alta exigência de qualidade superficial destinados a aplicações nobres como baixelas, mesas de fogão e portas de geladeira de alto luxo. O rendimento físico destes materiais passou a ser comprometido com a identificação de um defeito caracterizado por pequenas marcas, sem presença de óxidos ou inclusões que ocorrem ao longo da bobina, nas duas faces e na borda do lado de acionamento do laminador. Nos anos de 2009 a 2010 o defeito ocorria em 45% da produção de materiais finos de aços 430 processados no LB1. O defeito passou a ser codificado como S163 – Marca Mecânica Laminada. Para abordagem ao problema foi reunida equipe multifuncional com representantes das áreas de Operação, Manutenção, Metalurgia, Inspeção, dentre outras, utilizando a metodologia de Domínio Integrado do Processo (DIP). Após a análise das causas e a implantação dos planos de ação do projeto, houve o decréscimo acelerado da ocorrência do defeito. A causa fundamental do defeito foi caracterizada como o desalinhamento da desbobinadeira, provocando um efeito de empeno lateral no material durante a laminação do primeiro passe. Em Agosto de 2012 houve a primeira intervenção de correção na desbobinadeira do LB1, reduzindo os índices de ocorrência do defeito para 11% no mês de Setembro de 2012 e posteriormente reduzindo para percentuais inferiores a 1% a partir de Janeiro de 2013, superando as metas propostas para o projeto.

This Bureau of Mines manual is oriented to the technical needs of an investigation of fire or explosion accidents and includes various practical and theoretical information that is needed in analyzing accidents or evaluating conditions that might lead to an accident. It is applicable to accidents in the chemical, mining, transportation, and other fuel-related industries. Specific procedures for conducting an accident investigation are outlined, and various guidelines are given for developing the fire or explosion evidence. Ignitability, flammability, and physicochemical data are presented for over 500 combustible gases, liquids, and solids; empirical and theoretical expressions are also given for extrapolating the behavior of combustible-oxidant-diluent systems to various environmental conditions. In addition, various data pertinent to damage analysis are summarized to facilitate the task of the investigator in developing plausible accident scenarios.

The evaluation of long-term performance of the wind turbine structures is essential in lowering the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) from wind sources. The required maintenance of the wind turbine foundation during the design-life time of the wind turbine may result in escalated cost, if not properly evaluated during the planning and designing phases. The degradation of the foundation soils’ stiffness due to the accumulation small plastic strains resulting from normal and/or extreme operating cyclic loading may result in escalating the O&M cost. The foundation’s stiffness degradation will result in a shift of the wind turbine system natural frequency, which may result in amplifying the vibrations generated at the hub. The anticipated shift of the wind turbine system natural frequency during the design-life time should be investigated through numerical simulations of the anticipated dynamic loading utilizing soil constitutive models that are capable of capturing the foundation stiffness degradation due to the accumulation of such small plastic strains. This study presents the validation of an element model that will be used to evaluate the performance of existing and/or proposed constitutive model.

Ventilation monitoring and control in mines are becoming an integral part of day-to-day activity for maintaining health and safety of miners. The authors evaluate potential real-time monitoring solutions for detecting and reducing diesel particulatematter, mine fires, and dust in situ, and examined the state-of-the-art use of ventilation monitoring and control in underground mines for detecting and reducing air contaminants to acceptable regulatory limit. Authors review relevant documents, including research papers, trade publications, and manufacturers’ website-based information, to identify research gaps. The authors also evaluate contemporary sensors (airflow, gas, dust, silica), control system and software technologies, data transport systems, Industrial Internet of Things, ventilation network simulators, and control devices to identify potential health and safety research gaps. In this study, examples of some mines from Canada, Australia, and the USA are included where ventilation monitoring and controls have been applied. Overall, this review identifies multiple challenges and research gaps in applying mine monitoring and control systems that could be the focus of future research, offering potential improvements to miner safety and health and financial benefits.

Mining camps can be divided roughly into two types-the large, opulent settlement that blooms like the rose about a strong mine in full operation; and the puny group of adobe huts, or calamina shacks, or even canvas tents flung down in the wilderness to shelter the gay pioneers of a shining prospect or the shattered survivors of a lost hope. Of the first, I know nothing; but in the second, I have spent some of my best years, and from its curious code of morals and manners, its comic hates and its unreasoning loves, its high impatience and its engulfing kindness, I have charted the narrow .and pitted path which must be trod by the woman who would success¬fully live therein.

In April 2013 a 48 MVA submerged arc furnace producing silicomanganese was excavated in South Africa. Since the high shell temperatures recorded in the tap-hole area resulted in the furnace being switched out for relining, the tap-hole area was excavated systematically. A refractory wear profile of the tap-hole area with affected hearth and sidewall refractory was obtained in elevation. The carbon ramming paste in front of, above, andbelow the tap-hole was worn, as was the SiC with which the tap-hole was built. A clay mushroom formed but was detached from the refractories. Thermodynamic and mass-transfer calculations were conducted to quantify the potential for wear by chemical reaction between refractory and slag and refractory and metal in the tap-hole area. It was found that chemical reaction between refractory and slag or metal could offer only a partial explanation for the wear observed; erosion is expected to contribute significantly to wear.

The Smuggler is one of the mines in the Aspen district, located the central part of Pitkin County, Colo. It was first examined in July 1943 by C. R. Wilfloy, former mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City, Utah, in, company with the lessees, R. D. Rohlfing of Aspen and J. W. Vanderwilt of Denver. The purpose of this examination was to sample a mineralized breccia zone that appeared continuous along the contact between the Leadville and Weber formations. These preliminary samples showed that the zone contains low but significant amounts of lead and zinc and that the minerals are partly oxidized and thus not easily concentrated. The mine was examined again in May 1946 by the senior author and William Herron, one of the present lessees of the property. This examination reviewed the previous sampling and recommended investigations by the Bureau of Mines. Sampling and drilling investigations were conducted by the Bureau from October 1946 to February 1947 and again from August 1947 to April 1948. Aspen is the center of a famous mining district that produced over $102,000,000 in silver and lead ores from 1880 to 1918, when a dispute closed down the mines (fig. 1). All of the workings below the Cowenhoven tunnel in Smuggler Mountain and the lower Durant tunnel in Aspen Mountain have been flooded since that time. The Cowenhoven portal now is caved, and Smuggler Nos. 1 and 2 tunnels are the only accessible workings in Smuggler Mountain. The only operating mine is the Midnight, situated 4 miles south of town at an altitude of 9,700 feet.

The purpose of the paper is to discuss socially sustainable development in the mining industry and the communities surrounding the mines. The discussions are based on results from a prestudy and literature review on mining and sustainable development conducted during 2013–2014 at Luleå University of Technology in Sweden. ‘A social licence to mine’ is important for the mining industry, but the social dimension is a relatively underdeveloped dimension when it comes to sustainable development in general and the mining industry in particular, one reason probably being the lack of effective methods for capturing social impacts. The mining industry and the surrounding communities face many challenges that provide both possibilities and obstacles to socially sustainable development; eg aspects such as gender, work conditions and cultural aspects. For example, a strong mining workplace culture and community identity can create strong cohesion but also lead to excluding certain groups, rejecting new ideas and reinforcing obsolete values. Other challenges include recruitment, as well as health and safety in relation to an increased use of fly-in-fly-out, contractors and automation of mining. Some challenges relate to the effects of fluctuations in the mining market. There is a lack of research that links attitudes, policies and activities within companies to their impact on the wider community, and vice versa. Future research should also include the development of methods and indicators for social sustainability relevant for mining – in other words: how do mining companies get ‘a social licence to mine’?CITATION:Abrahamsson, L, Lööw, J, Nygren, M and Segerstedt, E, 2015. Many contributors have added to the fund of knowledge in the basic sciences related to mineral dressing during the past year. During 1964, the French edition of the Proceedings of the VIth International Mineral Processing Congress together with discussions was printed. Also, complete Preprints of papers delivered at the VIIth IMPC were published in September1. Over a third of the papers presented at VIIth IMPC dealt with fundamentals. COMMINUTION It has been postulated by Ponceleta that flaws need not exist before a stress is applied but rather the flaws are created at the tip of a propagating crack at a stress well below the theoretical breaking stress.

CONSIDERABLE progress has been made during the last few years in analyzing the action of plastic deformation in metallic crystals. This is due largely to the development of X-ray spectrographic methods for studying changes in the orientation of single crystals, or of conglomerates, as they occur during the process of plastic deformation, but partly to the widespread knowledge of suitable technique for preparing large (single or variously combined) crystals for direct crystallographic observation under stress or in various conditions of strain. These two methods of studying changes in the crystalline structure of metals may of course be used in conjunction with features of mutual support, but unfortunately the advantage of direct crystallographic observation is lost when we proceed to the study of severely cold-worked structures, owing to the occurrence of real or apparent crystalline discontinuities which become more and more complicated as the amount of plastic action increases. Furthermore, the X-ray methods do not appear to be adequate, at least in their present stage of development, to fix definitely the character of structural alteration in the parent crystal lattice by plastic deformation. The principal question at issue concerns the nature of the crystalline particles that remain after plastic deformation. These are generally known in our American metallurgical literature as crystalline fragments,' and they seem, indeed, to diffract as individuals causing the Hull pattern of a severely cold-worked metal to resemble the pattern of a fine powder,2 with certain features of preferred orientation among the particles deter- mined by the manner and intensity of cold working. We must freely concede that there are conceptions of lattice alteration, apart from that of simple fragmentation, which would account for an increasing number of lattice positions according to X-ray spectrographic observation as the degree of deformation increased.

"Abstract- The Jasper Gold mine in northern Saskatchewan produced a total mill feed of 140 127 tonnes at an average grade of 19.0 g/t Au. Both diamond drilling and chip samples from under­ ground workings returned extremely high values, up to 12 851 g/t (375 oz/I) Au over 0.10 meter from a chip sample. In the presence of such extremely high grades, the accurate estimation of reserves is a major problem.ln the first part of this study, production data from the mine were used to evaluate the results of a variety of reserve estimation techniques in this environment. In two out of three cases studied, indicator kriging with assays cut to 342.9 g/t (10 oz/I) gave extremely good results. In the third case, however , indicator kriging gave unacceptable results. Instead, lognormal kriging of uncut data gave the best results.Secondly, from the same database, a number of drill-hole spacings were simulated, and reserves estimated from the simulations. As may be expected, the results of this analysis show increasingly better results with tighter drill-hole spacing. However, even with a 5 m by 5 m spacing the variation from actual grade was quite large. This is not a systematic under- or over-estimation of grade, rather a random scatter of results .The results of this study show very clearly the problems of deriving good estimates of reserves when extremely high-grade samples are encountered. There is a high degree of randomness to this database, so reserve estimation in this situation will remain a high-risk operation."

Electric power curtailments resulting from the coal strike, required Noranda Aluminum, Inc. to shut down its 140,000 ton-per-year (tpy) primary aluminum smelter at New Madrid, Mo., and layoff 308 workers. Other primary aluminum production facilities affected by the coal strike included the Aluminum Company of America plant at Evansville, Ind. which shut down half of one potline; the Eastalco Aluminum Co., smelter at Frederick, Md., which cut production by 7 percent; and the National-Southwire Aluminum Co. plant at Hawesville, Ky. which cut production by 6 percent. Alumax, Inc. announced that construction had started on a 91,000 tpy potline at the Eastalco primary aluminum smelter. The new potline will be owned 65 percent by Alumax and 35 percent by Mitsui & Co. Ltd. Howmet Aluminum Corp., which currently owns 50 percent of the existing 176,000 tpy facility, has the option of becoming a 50 percent owner of the third potline in 1982. Construction of the new line was scheduled to be completed in 1980.

This publication presents abstracts of articles and investigations pertaining to the utilization of fly ash. The terms "fly ash" and "flue. ash," as' used in most of the papers, refer to the ash from pulverized-coal firing collected by electrostatic precipitators or mechanical collectors. Several investigators do not define the material on which they report beyond calling it fly ash, but they probably refer to the fine material resulting from burning pulverized coal. A few of the papers report on investigations involving not only the use of fly ash but boiler slag as well. These can be identified by the title of the articles. Bibliographical information and the abstracts are arranged according to the date the papers were published, with the most recent listed first. With the continually increasing use of pulverized-coal firing, profitable disposal of the fly ash is becoming a problem of greater importance to many utility and industrial companies. Also, in recent years, the public demand for cleaner air, and the more highly efficient fly-ash collectors available have resulted in the collection of a greater percentage of the fly ash produced. The solution to better utilization of fly ash has, therefore, been the object of research for some years.

As ore grades decline, ore deposits get harder and mineralogical complexity increases, metallurgical skills are more important than ever to ensure that today?s mining operations are operating efficiently and profitably. Yet specialist undergraduate degree programs have all but disappeared and metallurgical skills training for graduate engineers in the workspace if often haphazard. In response to this situation, specialists at the JK Centre in Queensland, Australia, have put together a professional development program designed to fast-track skills development for early career metallurgical professionals. The program, called ?MetSkill ® ?, is offered as a group training package for young metallurgists in the workplace. It is centred on a meaningful technical investigation negotiated between the JK Centre delivery team and the client company. As well as learning about project management and data collection and analysis, the participants study specialist topics such as comminution, flotation and mineralogy under the tutelage of senior research and consulting professionals. The technical investigation provides an opportunity for immediate practice of these new skills and JK Centre specialists are on hand to provide feedback and support throughout the program. The participants are employed across different operations in Australia and the Asia-Pacific, and although they occasionally come together for group training activities they are often separated by considerable distance. Specialist educational professionals from The University of Queensland have provided an innovative web platform to support collaboration and communication between all participants. This paper will describe the MetSkill ® program in detail, as well as providing a report on its initial roll-out to 2 groups of Australian graduate metallurgists in 2012

Brass, a deliberate alloy of copper and zinc, has been known since before Roman times. There are two main methods of making brass: (1) Cementation or calamine process - crushed zinc ore (calamine, ZnC03 , or calcined calamine, ZnO), is mixed with charcoal and small pieces of metallic copper and heated to about 900°C in a closed crucible, (2) Alloying - metallic copper and zinc are melted together in a reverberatory furnace. According to most modern authorities (e.g. Smith and Forbes 1955), the calamine process was the only one used in western Europe prior to the 18th century. At that time, the alloying technique began to take over, because metallic zinc was successfully produced on a large scale for the first time. Previously, this had been a problem because zinc vapourizes at 906°C or about the same temperature at which it can be reduced from its ore. Thus, some means had to be devised to collect and condense the zinc vapour (Tylecote 1976). Metallic zinc was known, however, earlier than the 18th century A.O. Several early finds have been made, including a rolled sheet of metallic zinc found in excavations at the Athens Agora dating to the 3rd to 2nd century B. C. (Farnsworth et al. 1949). The Chinese were producing zinc by at least the 10th century A. D. and, by the 17th century, Chinese zinc ingots were being imported into Europe by the Dutch East India Company (Needham 1974). Metallic zinc is also mentioned in several European documentary sources from the 16th century (e.g. Paracelsus, Agricola). This study traces the changes in Western brass making methods from Classical to Renaissance times by examining documentary and archaeological evidence.

This study was done to evaluate the economic and technical considerations of using pozzolanic materials in order to guide cement manufacturers, pozzolan producers, contractors, Government organizations, and others interested in concrete construction work. Five hundred and thirty-eight samples of pozzolanic raw materials were taken from 27 central and western States. These samples were evaluated by petrographic procedures, and about 200 of the most promising ones were given a complete series of physical tests (American Society for Testing and Materials) to evaluate further their suitability as a pozzolan. This investigation showed that deposits of natural pozzolan materials were widely dispersed in the central and western parts of the United States but that exploiting these deposits would depend on whether they could compete economically with an increasingly abundant industrial waste product--fly ash.
