As part of its goal to minimize requirements for mineral commodities through conservation and substitution, the Bureau of Mines conducted research to develop molybdenum as a potential substitute for superalloys containing the strategic and critical materials, nickel, chromium, and cobalt. Since molybdenum requires protection from oxidation at high temperatures, several complex oxides of the spinel and perovskite structure were investigated to determine which possessed the greatest potential for use as oxidation-barrier coatings. Two spinels (MgCr204 and MgA1204) and five perovskites (BaHfO3, YCrO3, NdCrO3, BaZrO3, and LaCrO3) were selected for testing. Various high-temperature prop¬erties that are important for oxidation-resistant coatings were examined, including diffusion rates of oxygen and molybdenum, recession (vaporization) rates, hardness, erosion resistance, sinterability, reactivity with molybdenum, and ease of application. From the evaluation of high-temperature properties, two spinels (MgCr204 and MgA1204) stand above the other oxides as possible coatings for molybdenum. However, laboratory coatings of MgCr204 at 1,360° C (2,480° F) are equivalent or inferior to currently available MoSi2 coatings; laboratory coatings of MgA1204 may be comparable under limited conditions to currently available MoSi2 coatings at the same temperature.

Development of improved transportation networks in major urban centers has led more and more to underground construction, the only reasonable solution for decreasing surface traffic congestion. Excavations required by these projects usually cause decompression of the surrounding soil mass which results in subsidence of several centimeters. While these magnitudes of subsidence have no consequences in undeveloped areas, they are often unacceptable in urban areas where existing buildings, structures and utilities are endangered. Recent tunneling projects for the extension of the Paris Metropolitan Transit System (R.A.T.P.) underground network were carried out with this in view and gave rise to the development of a number of innovative techniques for minimizing ground decompression and subsidence. As shown in Figure 1, the recent R.A.T.P. expansion program includes a new express metro, 46 km long, crossing Paris from East to West, and the extension of many existing metro lines in the suburbs. From the start, R.A.T.P. was faced with many unique technical problems for which there was little precedent experience. The structures to be built have large dimensions, with cross-sections typically ranging from 40 to 300 m2, and exceptionally to 600 m2. The new lines are often very deep because the shallow profile is already congested by the existing metro, interceptors, sewers and a very large number of utilities. As a result, new construction is often below ground water level by as much as 20 m. Moreover, the geology varies widely from hard limestone with compressive strength over 1500 kg/cm2 to inconsistent water bearing sand. Finally, curves in the East-West line must have a minimum radius of 500 m which frequently forces the alignment to pass below existing structures, buildings and monuments.

Segundo dados da Associação Brasileira de Celulose o parque produtor esta diversificado em diversas partes do pais. Na região noroeste fluminense esta localizada a Cia Paduana de Papeis – COPAPA que produz aproximadamente 36.000 ton/ano de papel e 13.500 ton/ano de resíduo. Sem um destino adequado para este material tornou-se necessário o estudo da incorporação do mesmo em argamassas. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o efeito da incorporação do resíduo da produção de papel na trabalhabilidade de argamassas de múltiplo-uso através do ensaio de determinação do índice de consistência. Os resultados mostraram que com uma incorporação de até 20% sobre a massa de cal a argamassa continua com parâmetros de trabalhabilidade, podendo ser empregada na construção civil

An evaluation of a pilot scale Delkor horizontal belt filter at Bellambi's South Bulli Colliery showed high productivities and low moisture contents for a range of feed slurries. When treating flotation concentrate, a productivity in excess of 1000 kg/m2/hr (dry) at a moisture content of less than 22 per cent was obtained. The results indicated the belt filter had a capacity twice that of conventional drum or disc filters, and was capable of dewatering a very fine, thickened, classifying cyclone overflow slurry to an acceptable moisture content. The superior performance of this filter is discussed in terms of the factors influencing cake formation and the stratification of solids in the filter bowl of a conventional rotary vacuum drum filter.

The Precambrian of Midcontinent United States includes a metamorphic belt of probable Middle Precambrian age, a belt of Keweenawan volcanics and sediments, and widespread igneous activity that extended from Iowa to Texas. Most of the present structural configuration of the Midcontinent was developed by epeirogenic movements during the Paleozoic. The dominant elements are basins and arches. Three major metallogenic provinces occur in the Midcontinent. They include the Missouri Precambrian iron ores, the Lake Superior copper ores, and the Mississippi Valley lead-zincbarite- fluorite deposits. Several large iron deposits, occurring in rhyolite and andesite host rocks, are known. Both discordant massive bodies and replacement- type bodies occur. The iron deposits are believed to have been formed during the period of igneous activity. They are essentially the same age as the volcanics and older than the granites that intrude the volcanics. The Lake Superior copper ores include two established districts, the Keweenawan district and White Pine, and the copper-nickel deposits in the Duluth gabbro. The lead-zinc-barite-fluorite deposits include four major districts, Southeast Missouri, Upper Mississippi Valley, Tri-State, and Illinois-Kentucky, and at least eight minor districts. Ore may occur in stratiform deposits and in veins. The major districts all contain stratiform deposits, but several have produced appreciable quantities of vein ore. Only vein deposits are known in some of the smaller districts. The major features of all districts can be catalogued in terms of host rocks, structural patterns of districts, types of ore-bearing structures, and mineralogical characteristics. From these features, a Mississippi Valley type ore body, in its type area, can be defined.

The solution mining of evaporites has a history of approximately 5,000 years. The insitu leaching of metalliferous ore will have many of the same characteristic problems which have confronted industry for years in the production of evaporite minerals. Basically we will be converting the less soluble forms of valuable metals into their more soluble salts and producing these in much the same manner as, for example, sodium chloride. There are a number of problems which we are faced with that are more complex and complicated and, therefore, will require a higher degree of sophistication than previously employed. One of our most important undertakings will be the clearcut definition of the problems involved. While a great deal of expertise can be drawn from the solution mining of evaporites and the oil industry, problems peculiar to the hydrometallurgical field will need to be solved. One of these is the introduction of permeability into an impermeable rock so as to expose the sought after values of metals which by volume are infinitesimal when compared with sodium chloride, potash or other type water soluble mineralization. After establishing this permeability which will be miniscule when compared to a solution cavity, there will be the maintenance of this permeability. In general, salt deposits are of a somewhat uniform chemical composition and thus their chemistry was relatively simple. Each metalliferous ore body is somewhat unique in its chemistry and will need to be treated accordingly.

The room-and-pillar mining method is used extensively in underground limestone mines in the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. The rock mass is typically a near-horizontal, bedded deposit at relatively shallow depth. A survey of 34 mines was conducted in which data on roof spans, rock mass properties and support practices were collected as part of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health research project into ground control in limestone mines. The average room width is 13.5 m (44 ft), accommodating large mechanized equipment. The results show that the immediate roof beam can consist of many individual layers and can contain several near-vertical joints. In spite of the room widths, the roof is naturally stable in many mines. Observed roof instabilities can generally be related to excessive horizontal stresses or unfavorable geological structures that cause block fallout or beam failure of the bedded roof rocks. The survey showed that the rock mass quality of the limestone does not vary significantly throughout the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. Roof conditions and the need for support were found to be closely related to the thickness and competence of the first layer of limestone in the roof. The findings highlight the need to identify local geological structures and the roof beam characteristics so that support alternatives can be evaluated. Monitoring and observational technologies that are available for identifying potentially unstable roof are presented, which include: roof characterization using the Rock Fall Risk Index, automated logging of roofbolt hole drilling, microseismic monitoring and displacement monitoring.

Keywords: accurate control, matte level, smelting operations, process control, tapping, sounding bar, electromagnetic measurement [ ] Accurate control of matte levels during primary matte smelting operations is desirable in order to improve process decision-making. High matte levels in the vessel could have to disastrous consequences, particularly in the new generation of intensive smelting furnace with deep-cooled copper coolers. Knowing when to commence tapping and a better understanding of melt times can only be improved if the furnace levels are monitored correctly. At Lonmin Marikana Smelter Division it has long been understood that the matte level information being provided by the manual sounding bar is only as good as the operators? following of measurement procedure, their skill in assessing what the sounding bar is displaying, and their individual interpretation of what they are looking at. This paper sets out to show how this problem was identified as an area of major concern to the plant, how a solution was sought and how an electromagnetic measurement system was installed as an alternative measurement to the matte sounding bar system. Other areas discussed in the paper are the difficulties to be overcome when first installing new equipment and how these teething problems were solved by close co-operation between Lonmin and equipment suppliers, which led to some design modifications to the delivery system. In conclusion the paper discusses the results between the electromagnetic measurement and the manual sounding measurement and how best to integrate the generated data into the plant?s process control system for improved decision making.

A phase diagram for the Ta-Zr system is presented. The system is of the minimum-melting point type with the 0-zirconium phase decomposing monotectoidally at 785°C and 95.5 at. pct Zr. The minimum solidus temperature is 1875°C and the temperature of the top of the monotectoid loop is 1775°C. Techniques employed included X-ray diffraction and fluorescmce, electron microprobe analyses, diffusion couples, metallography, and melting-point measurements. Errors due to interstitial solutes and in melting observations are particularly common in this system, and their occurrence is discussed. SEVERAL versions of the Ta-Zr phase diagram have been reported in the literature.lm7 Williams et al.' report a diagram of the minimum-melting point type with a monotectoid reaction at 800°C and 12 wt pct Ta. The minimum in the solidus occurs at 1820°C and 25 wt pct Ta, while the top of the monotectoid gap is located at 1780°C and 80 wt pct Ta. The experimental techniques employed were metallography, electrical resistance variation with temperature, dilatometry, X-ray diffraction, and direct observation of melting by the technique of Pirani and ~lterthum.' Experience in the Nb-Zr phase diagram has shown that small changes in the interstitial content can cause large shifts in the positions of the phase boundaries. Small amounts of inter -stitials can cause similar changes in the Ta-Zr system and may be responsible for the wide variations in the phase diagrams previously reported.'-' The authors15 have found that alloys containing 0.75 wt pct 0 and 1.0 wt pct Ni with tantalum contents from 19 to 85 at. pct often contain a lamellar or cellular precipitate after annealing above 1400°C. This precipitate is very similar to that reported by pollack,12 Ralls," and Donlevy17 for the Ni-Zr system. In the present investigation, a wider variety of experimental techniques and improved alloy purity were applied to the resolution of errors in diagrams for this system as they now appear in the literature. New results have been obtained in the areas of alloy homogeneity and purity. Errors in the common techniques of direct melting observation in binary alloys have been demonstrated. In the commercially important high-tantalum region, the more accurate metallographic method of solidus determination has been employed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Nominal analyses of the materials employed are given in Table I. The zirconium was low hafnium reactor grade iodide crystal bar, and the tantalum was in the form of high-purity sheet. Powders were impossible to use because of gas content. The need for anti-corrosion coatings has existed for many years in the ground support industry, but the application requirements have made coating selection limited. Varying groundwater and chemical conditions continually challenge long term coating performance. Traditionally the industry coating preference has been hot-dip galvanizing due to its performance characteristics in highly corrosive environments and low cost nature. However, the galvanized coating has application limitations. The dynamites are graded according to the percentage of nitroglycerin that they contain. Thus a “40% powder” would be one in which the sticks, weighing one-half pound each, would include one-fifth of a pound of pure nitroglycerin. Dynamite is usually packed in paper cartridges weighing about one-half pound each which will vary in diameter. When ordering, it is customary to specify a size of cartridge that will as nearly as possible fill the drill hole, the commonest size being 1 ¼” in diameter by 8” in length. It is nearly always shipped in 50-lb. boxes, which have a volumetric capacity of 3/4 cu.ft.

"The pressure oxidation autoclave at the Goldcorp’s Red Lake Gold Mines (RLGM) was commissioned in 1991. Since commissioning, the circuit has been well maintained and its capacity increased to mechanical and gaseous oxygen limitations. With advances in available technology, opportunities to produce more sulphide concentrate and a changing business environment, an optimization project has been initiated at RLGM. A multi-phase approach has been developed to optimize both the operations and economics of the circuit. Increased sulphide concentrate production from improved flotation recovery and increasing gold sulphide association at depth has led to the POx circuit becoming a throughput bottleneck. The opportunity exists to process increased tonnages of sulphide concentrates and increase gold production. In order to realize this value, it will be necessary to increase the throughput capacity of the POx circuit.BackgroundThe POx autoclave at the RLGM, commissioned in 1991, was Canada’s first gold autoclave. It was installed to replace the two-stage fluid bed roaster that was built when the Campbell mine and mill were constructed in the late Forties. The circuit was originally designed to process 12.5 t/d sulphide sulphur in about 50 t/d of Campbell flotation concentrate. Following the merger of the Campbell and Red Lake Mines in 2006, the POx circuit started processing flotation concentrate from both Campbell and Red Lake Mills. In recent years, the circuit has been processing about 18 t/d sulphide sulphur in 75-85 t/d flotation concentrate."

O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar a reação de dessulfuração, envolvidas no processo de pré-tratamento de ferro-gusa. A princípio, as misturas utilizadas foram caracterizadas e estudadas através do software de termodinâmica computacional (FactSage 7.1). Em seguida, os resultados obtidos através do estudo termodinâmico computacional foram comparados com aqueles obtidos mediante os testes experimentais a 1400°C. As misturas dessulfurantes tiveram como base a CaO com três tipos de fundentes, fluorita, sodalita e barrilha, além da utilização de alumínio como elemento desoxidante. Os testes experimentais permitiram identificar que a adição de 0,1% em massa de alumínio no gusa, eleva a taxa de remoção de enxofre principalmente no instantes iniciais do processo. Com a utilização da termodinâmica computacional pode-se mostrar que a reação de dessulfuração no ferro-gusa é exotérmica para os teores de silício encontrados no processo. Além disso, a termodinâmica computacional também contribui, em alguns casos, para a análise de compostos sólidos que podem se formar na escória e limitar as reações de dessulfuração.

1994 estimates for Porgera are probable and proven reserves of 58 200 000 t of ore grading 5 g/t Au. Gold mineralisation is related to an intrusive complex emplaced at shallow levels in poorly consolidated sedimentary rocks. The complex is located in a zone of fold-and-thrust deformation, whose formation may have been initiated shortly before emplacement and continues locally today. Abundant primary magnetite in the complex gives an intense, 5 km wide aeromagnetic anomaly. The deposit formed during two main stages of mineralisation, the first related to early magmatic-hydrothermal activity and the second representing later epithermal overprinting centred on the Roamane fault. Hydrothermal alteration followed closely on emplacement indicating a close genetic relationship between magmatism and mineralisation. Both stages of hydrothermal activity post-date and overprint early propylitic alteration. Several factors have acted in unison or sequentially to concentrate metals at the deposit, including an extensional or trans-tensional tectonic setting within an arc or collisional environment, the exsolution of a magmatic hydrothermal fluid prior to sulphur saturation in the melt, the development of the hydrothermal system into one favourable for transporting gold, the action of late-stage faulting in focusing epithermal fluid flow, and the role of dissolved gases in promoting fluid phase separation and high-grade ore deposition

The Siamese mining lew, which is cited as "The Sian Mining Act, 2461 (1919)," was enacted February 14, B. E. 2461 (A. D. 1919), corresponding to the ninth year of His Majesty's reign. This act replaces the Sian Mining Act of 1901 and repeals all edicts, decrees, laws, rules, and local customs relating to mining the terms of which are inconsistent with the new law. It shall in- clude all subsequent alterations or additions, as well as all rules issued by the Minister (of Land and Agriculture) already in force or to be brought into force publication in the Government Gazette to be deemed sufficient notice of any modifications or alterations. (Art. 1, 2, 5, 83, and 85.) Legislation passed recently amending certain provisions of the mining law for the purpose of controlling the sale of minerals is the mining amendment act, B. E. 2474, given August 21, 1931 (7th year of the present reign), which repeals provisions of the mining act, B. 3. 2461, and also all rules and regula- tions relating to mining that are inconsistent with the amending ect. Under article 25 of the mining amendment act, B. E. 2474, ministeriel regulations (of the Minister of Agriculture) were issued August 21, 1931. Thin spray-on liners (TSLs) have been used as sealants and rock support in tunnels for over 25 years. Laboratory tests have indicated satisfactory properties that can provide adequate strength, adhesion, toughness, and elasticity as part of rock support systems in mining excavations. These characteristics are, however, not always demonstrated in practice, when mine environmental conditions do not correspond with laboratory environmental conditions. The shortcomings of TSLs experienced in the mining industry have raised concerns, resulting in scepticism from some operators regarding their utilization. The research described in this paper aims to investigate TSL performance in environmental conditions similar to those experienced in mines. Brazilian indirect tensile (BIT) specimens were prepared from precast shotcrete and coated with TSLs. The specimens were then exposed to different environmental conditions for up to 112 days before BIT testing under various conditions: laboratory room temperature and humidity; saturated room temperature; and combined saturated and high temperature (50°C). Additional uncoated shotcrete and TSL BIT specimens were prepared for comparison purposes. The results of the BIT tests showed that environmental conditions have a significant influence on the tensile strength enhancement of shotcrete by TSLs. Water-based TSLs are most likely to be suitable for high humidity environments, although their performance decreases at higher temperatures. Numerical modelling of TSL-coated BIT samples confirms the potential limitations of designing TSL support based only on laboratory testing carried out under room conditions.

With the exception of occasional periods, when up to 80% of oxidized ore was treated, the G.M.K. plant treated all sulphide ore until October, 1939. The treatment was, briefly, as follows:The ore was ground to approximately 17% plus 200 mesh Tyler and agitated in cyanide solution, after straking. After agitation, the pulp passed through two stages of counter-current decantation washing in Dorr thickeners and was filtered once, to complete the precyanidation stage.The precyanide filter cake was repulped with flotation circuit solution and floated in a Denver Sub A flotation machine, consisting of twelve cells. The concentrates were roasted, cyanided and filtered four times before disposal to the' dam. The flotation tailings were thickened to conserve water and pumped away to a separate dam.The average results of flotation operations for the six months before October, 1939, are shown in Table 1.

The manufacture of Energetics Materials (EM), including maintenance and demilitarization of munitions causes dangerously high levels of explosives residues to be harbored in building features. The two commonly approved methods of decontaminating energetics contaminated equipment and building features are thermal treatment and steam washing. The current regulatory environment is generally becoming more stringent and unfavorable to thermal and steam decontamination because of their adverse impact on air, soil, and water and their ineffectiveness to completely remove accumulated energetics from foundation cracks, internal and external piping, voids in walls and ventilation systems, and internal cavities of fixed equipment. However, chemical destruction of energetics, especially high explosives, is gaining acceptance as a safer, cost-effective and environmental friendly alternative to thermal and steam decontamination. Organic explosives, including nitramines and nitrate esters are oxidized organic compounds that are susceptible to chemical oxidation and reduction reactions. Under suitable conditions, a chemical reagent consisting of sulfur-based bulk reductants (neutralent) commercialized as MuniRem generates highly reactive free radicals that very rapidly degrade many energetic compounds to innocuous end products while stabilizing metals as the insoluble metal sulfides.
