(communication to the Secretary): When a simple beam supports any given load, the lower fibers me in tension while the upper fibers are in compression, and if its cross-section is rectangular the neutral surface, where the stresses pass through zero from tension to compression, is at mid-depth, provided the elastic limit is not exceeded. In addition to the longitudinal stresses, there are horizontal shearing-stresses between the fibers which have their maximum value in the neutral surface, and which equal zero at the upper and lower surfaces, while there are also vertical shearing-stresses. Let another beam of the same dimensions be placed on top of this one, and the load be doubled, it then produces stresses in each beam of the same character, magnitude and distribution as in the preceding case, provided there be no friction between the adjacent surfaces of the beams. Next let these two beams be so firmly united that there will be no motion between them when the same load is again applied. All the fibers in the upper beam are now in compression, and those in the lower beam in tension, while the maximum stresses in the outer fibers are only one-half as large as before. The strength of the combined beams is therefore doubled. If, however, some motion occurs between the beams, then the stresses in some of the lower fibers of the upper beam pass from compression to tension, and those in some of the upper fibers of the lower beam from tension to compression, while the stresses in the outer fibers have a magnitude between the two values previously stated. "Driven steel tubular piles of up to 2 m diameter have been used to support abutments and piers of a bridge over Nambucca River and floodplain. The bridge was designed by Arup-Aurecon Design Joint Venture (Lead Designers) with GHD leading the geotechnical design assessment in conjunction with Acciona Ferrovial Joint Venture (AFJV – Principal Contractor). Piles were to be driven through alluvium and founded on foliated Phyllite bedrock. The large diameter piles posed significant challenges on bearing capacity assessment and pile acceptance criteria, especially for anisotropic rock strength. Prior to pile driving, boreholes were drilled at each pile location, accompanied with a suite of rock index and UCS testing. AFJV and GHD oversaw geotechnical construction verification. All production piles were monitored with a Pile-Driving-Analyser to manage driving stresses and pile termination. Wave matching CAPWAP analyses were performed on 40% of the piles at the end-ofdrive, or restrike, to satisfy specification requirements and limit over-driving. This paper presents discussions on the design and construction of the driven piles with findings from the extensive dynamic pile data obtained. Based on the shaft resistance distribution and toe resistance obtained from CAPWAP analysis, the mobilised pile shaft frictions fs of the soil / rock materials, as well as the end bearing fb of the founding Phyllite bedrock, are examined. The impact of the rock fabric foliation angle on the m obilised fb, and the relationship between rock strength and the mobilised fs are outlined.INTRODUCTIONThe Bridge over Nambucca River consists of a single bridge structure, comprising single substructures and separate superstructures. The 850 m long bridge facilitates the crossing of the Northbound and Southbound carriageways of the Pacific Highway Upgrade over Nambucca River, with central median barriers, separated by a horizontal clearance of 50 mm. The bridge is required to span over the Nambucca River, which is a navigational channel, and over the adjacent floodplains, including two local access roads and the existing Pacific Highway. The bridge superstructure consists of 21 simply supported spans, each comprises four 2.25 m deep precast post-tensioned U-Girders, with two girders across the width of each carriageway. The spans of girders vary from eleven spans of 39.5m and ten spans of 41.5 m. The floodplain section of the bridge was founded on up to 2m diameter steel tubular piles, designed to be driven through alluvial sediments and weak rock to nominal refusal on sound rock. Dynamic load testing using wave matching CAPWAP (CAse Pile Wave Analysis Program) analyses in conjunction with PDA (Pile Driving Analyser) were used to verify the pile integrity and mobilised capacity. This paper discusses geotechnical aspects associated with design and construction of driven piles. The methodology developed for construction to verify pile capacity and to meet acceptance criteria is outlined. Based on the shaft resistance distribution and toe resistance obtained from CAPWAP analysis, the mobilised pile shaft friction, fs of the soil / rock materials, as well as the end bearing, fb of the founding Phyllite bedrock, are examined. PYROPHYLLITE is a hydrous aluminum silicate (A12Si4010(OH)2)1 that occurs in both the foliated and the massive forms. The foliated variety resembles talc in that it has a greasy feel, a pearly luster, perfect basal cleavage, and usually is white, although in some deposits apple green, gray, brown, russet, and nearly black specimens may be found. The massive deposits of pyrophyllite yield pearl gray to light tan aggregates, some of which are so friable that they may be crushed with the hands into a fine gritty powder. Frequently specimens of the massive variety are studded with crystals of radial structure. The mineral has a specific gravity of about 2.7 and a hardness of 1 on Mobs' scale.1 The chemical composition of commercial pyrophyllite reflects the mineralogy of the deposits, which, according to Stuckey,2 contain pyro-phyllite and quartz, together with chloritoid, sericite, and a few other minerals of negligible importance. The latter, he says, "are noticed in but small quantities to the extent they might occur as accessory constitu-ents of an igneous rock or as products of regional metamorphism or weathering. . . . Quartz is abundant everywhere except in the very best grades of pyrophyllite." Analyses of specimens from several deposits are listed in Table 1, showing that the silica content varies from 57 to 73 percent and the alumina from 22 to 33 percent. Oxides of iron and the alkaline metals are collectively present, with one exception, to an extent of about 1 to 1.5 per cent.

The pig iron nugget process is gaining in importance as an alternative to the traditional blast furnace. Throughout the process, self-reducing?fluxing dried greenballs composed of iron ore concentrate, reducing-carburizing agent (coal), flux (limestone) and binder (bentonite) are heat-treated. During the heat treatment, dried greenballs are first transformed into direct reduced iron (DRI), then to transition direct reduced iron (TDRI) and finally to pig iron nuggets. The furnace temperature and/or residence time and the corresponding levels of carburization, reduction and metallization dictate these transformations. This study involved the determination of threshold furnace temperatures and residence times for completion of all of the transformation reactions and pig iron nugget production. The experiments involved the heat treatment of self-reducing?fluxing dried greenballs at various furnace temperatures and residence times. The products of these heat treatments were identified by utilizing optical microscopy, apparent density and microhardness measurements.

Rheological Behaviour of Clay-Rich Gangue Mineral Dispersions During Hydrometallurgical Treatment Alumino-silicate minerals invariable may present an intractable challenge in hydrometallurgical operations employed in low grade nickel, copper and gold ore leaching or high level nuclear waste (HLNW) processing. The interactions and reactivity of alumino-silicate clay gangue minerals such as muscovite/sericite, chlorite, kaolinite and smectite under acidic (eg pH <3) or alkaline (pH >13) conditions can have a striking impact on the particle interactions. These may manifest in undesirable pulp rheology, poor extraction rates and challenges in the subsequent "handleability" and solid-liquid separation processes (eg dewatering). In the present work, a review of investigations involving the interfacial chemistry, interactions and rheological behaviour of aqueous dispersions of mica-group, layered alumino-silicate clay (muscovite / sericite) and chalcocite minerals as a function of pH in the range 2 - 9 and time at 25¦C, is presented. Particle zeta potential, reflecting interfacial chemistry, indicated a strong pH-history and particle volume fraction dependency. Pristine particles' zeta potentials measured from high to low pH indicated mineral-specific isoelectric point (iep) at pH range 2 - 5. Subsequent measurements from low to high pH showed pH-history dependency with iep shift to higher pH values, the extent of which also depended upon particle volume fraction and aging time. Pulp pH-mediated particle interactions revealed by shear yield stress analysis displayed a bifurcation behaviour and good compliance with DLVO theory. The maximum pulp yield values occurred at the iep whilst weak rheology was observed where the magnitude of the particle zeta potential was greatest. The pivotal role played by both pulp chemistry and suspension conditions in regulating the particle interactions and concomitant rheological behaviour is highlighted. The implications of the findings with regards to clay-base pulps' handleability and its control during aqueous processing are discussed.

"Importance pf the small stone problem.Profitable disposal of limestone too small for making lime in the shaft kiln, is one of the most urgent problems in the lime industry. Reports received by the Bureau of Mines from 31 quarries show that the proportion of small stone varies from 2 to 40 per cent, averaging 18 per cent of gross pro¬duction, Modern methods of heavy blasting, and the use of crushers in large quarries tend to increase the proportion of small stone above that produced in early days when light blasting and hand sledging were almost universally used. There is also a growing movement toward underground operation of lime deposits, a method which in general produces a greater proportion of fines than is encountered in open-pit work. Thus the small stone problem is of growing importance, and demands the attention of every progressive lime producer. As the problem is of almost universal interest, it is urgently desired that every operator who reads this report will contribute from his knowledge or experience, answers to the questions on the final sheet.There are several markets in which small stone may be sold but in these markets the competition is generally keen and the prices low. The lime producer's chief product is lime, he understands its manufacture and marketing, and brings him a greater return than can be obtained from most limestone by-products. For these reasons it is evident that the conversion of small into lime is the nest desirable means of disposal."

Paper presented at the UK minerals industry conference held in Leeds, UK, 3-5 April 1995. A description is given of the approach that has been taken to the design of the 550 000 000 t superquarry with a planned life of 60 years that is proposed for development. The quarry has been designed to replicate a corrie and a sea loch and will include excavated slopes more than 570 m high. The main geological and physical controls on the layout and the choice of development method are outlined. The operation phasing is presented and the geotechnical constraints on slope design and the feasibility of alternative quarry limits are discussed. Environmental considerations have been dominant in planning and the quarry has been specifically designed for closure

Elongates are commonly used as stope support in South African gold and platinum mines. To evaluate the effect of the inherent strength, stiffness and yield variability associated with elongates, a statistical method is presented which addresses and quantifies the support performance at various levels of certainty. The analysis, which is based on a normal distribution, makes use of force-deformation curves determined from multiple laboratory compression tests on the same support type. The applicability of the method is illustrated making use of actual performance capabilities of various types of elongates. In order to ensure a high probability that support units installed underground exceed the standard support performance curve established by means of laboratory tests, the statistical mean of a suite of tests based on the same support type is downgraded. The ?correction factor? is a function of the mean and standard deviation of the test data, as well as the sample size of units deemed to control the local rock mass stability. It is shown that downgraded performance curves based on a high probability (90 to 95percent) of support units exceeding this performance level are suitable to ensure that the design of support systems will in variably meet the design criteria. In the highly discontinuous hangingwall rock mass typically associated with intermediate- and deep-level mining operations, the interaction between adjacent support units is comparatively limited (at the support spacings commonly used). Therefore, the appropriate sample size (n) of the support units controlling the local rock mass stability should be n= 1. In shallow mining conditions, sample sizes of up to n=5 may be warranted, depending on the spacing of joints and other discontinuities in the hangingwall.

The St. Cloud Mining Company extracts clinoptilolite about 6.5 km south of Winston, Sierra County, New Mexico. Production is about 18,000 mt/year. Natural zeolites are good adsorbents for positively charged solutes such as ammonium. St. Cloud’s production is used in animal hygiene, animal feed, environmental mitigation, air and water filtration, and other applications. By a simple chemical treatment with a surfactant, zeolites can also be modified to adsorb negatively charged solutes such as nitrate and arsentate, and neutral organics such as solvents and fuel components. These surfactant-modified zeolites are used in treating groundwater contamination, stormwater runoff, and solvent vapors from painting operations.

Following a successful investigation on the Central Zone sample, a cyanidation study was conducted on an ore sample from the AD-MW Zone of Clarence Stream Property, owned by Freewest Resources Canada, to develop a leaching strategy to extract gold. At a grade of 6.48 g/t, gold is present in the forms of aurostibite, free gold and electrum. The ore contains 4.3% berthierite/gudmundite, 1.3% pyrrhotite, 0.7% pyrite, 0.07% stibnite and 0.9% arsenopyrite. Similar to the Central Zone, the extraction of gold from the AD-MW Zone can be performed at atmospheric pressure, pH 10.5 and with a low concentration of cyanide. The grind size had no effect on gold extraction between a P80 of 28 to 71 µm. The oxygen and cyanide requirement significantly increased with a ?ner grind. Consequently, a very close control of cyanide addition is required to minimize passivation of gold. Lead nitrate, added in the pretreatment, increased the extraction of gold by 2.3%. Leaching at pH < 10 improved gold extraction but increased the cyanide consumption by 5%. Passivation of gold occurred when the pretreatment was longer than 2 hours. A longer pretreatment reduced the cyanide consumption by 5%. Mineralogical characterization of the leach residue with no gravity pretreatment prior to leaching indicated the presence of unleached gold grains and passivated gold grains. Removal of coarse gold by gravity increased the extraction by 2.8% (leach residue at 0.74 g/t Au). Increasing the DO to 16 ppm or the lead nitrate from 500 to 1,000 g/t increased the overall gold extraction to 90.4% (leach residue at 0.62 g/t), which is the maximum gold extraction obtained. The leaching parameters were 800 ppm NaCN, DO 16 ppm and pH 10.5 for a duration of 120 hours. The associated cyanide consumption was 4.0 kg/t. Gold leaching was not sensitive to cyanide concentration. Reducing the cyanide concentration to 250 ppm resulted in a gold extraction of 89.5% with a cyanide consumption of 2.6 kg/t.

The amount of Pd recovered from an exhausted olefin hydrogenation catalyst was found to depend on mixing technique, particle size, carbon percentage, chlorine flow, reaction time and temperature. Pd extraction was total when a sample in the 125-175 micrometre particle size range was chlorinated for 60 min at 723 K with 20 cm3 Cl2/min, for 60 min at 748 K with 30 cm3 Cl2/min and for 30 min at 773 K with 30 cm3 Cl2/min. No C addition was needed; the initial C content of the catalyst was sufficient for total recovery. Pd extraction was also affected by heat treatment in different atmospheres before chlorination. Treatment with O2, N2 and N2 with traces of O2 led to different degrees of oxidation of C and permitted the formation of oxidised Pd species. Thermal pretreatment in N2 with traces of O2 was most conducive to Pd extraction

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the mining industry has the highest average annual fatality rate (31.9 per 100,000 workers) among all major American industry. To address this, a major research program to reduce hazard exposure of miners with computer-assisted mining equipment was initiated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines.1 One application involves the manual process of extracting and hauling coal where operators, in the tight confines of a mine, can be struck or caught by mobile machinery. The approach to remedy this problem uses a guidance system on the haulage equipment so that it follows the machine that extracts coal. This, in essence, involves sensor-based docking of the machines. Sensors that can survive the hostile mine environment of dust, methane gas, and water, play the key role. Computer analysis of the mining machine&apos;s movements and empirical machine characterizations were conducted to establish operating requirements and spatial limitations to ensure proper loading of coal into the haulage equipment. These data served in the selection of a sensing system. Various technologies such as scanning laser systems and ultrasonic sensors have frequently been used in other applications but were found unacceptable. However, a near infrared (IR) sensor employing active targets met the requirements. The sensor has a nominal 75° conical field-of-view and a range from 0.1 to 18.0 m. For the single target mode, nominal range accuracy was 4.3% at a distance of 3.56 m. Correction algorithms were generated reducing the error to 0.6%. Airborne dust testing showed less than 0.8% accuracy (worst case) degradation at levels exceeding (by a factor of 7.5) concentrations permitted by Federal law. The sensor can track multiple active targets providing five degrees-of-freedom (DOF) measurements. Using four targets, the nominal range accuracy was 0.4% without correction algorithms. A guidance system for the haulage system to follow the mining machine does not exist commer¬cially. Such a system can reduce fatalities and injuries by current haulage mining equipment, and is a viable alternative to current haulage control.

The full history of exploration successes, failures and related costs from initial greenfield exploration in 1987 to the current brownfield stages was analysed for the Plutonic Marymia Gold Belt of Western Australia. This belt, which had escaped the attention of turn-of-the-century prospectors and had not produced any gold until 1990, is an ideal area for a collectively exhaustive, progressive value and risk case study of expected return on gold exploration. The study analyses the progressive screening of over 200 greenfield and near mine prospects, through various stages of exploration to the establishment of 38 mining sites, ranging from a few large mines to small satellite operations. It provides empirical estimates of the historical Bayesian probability of projects advancing to successive stages of exploration, eg from reconnaissance, to systematic drill testing, resource delineation, feasibility and mine development, given a successful outcome in any exploration phase. The ratio between the estimated value of the gold discovered and the corresponding historical exploration expenditure in each year and cumulatively, ie the average cost of discovery per ounce of gold, are then computed as measures of historical return on the exploration investment in this belt. These, together with an estimate of the æresidualÆ gold endowment, ie of the number and size of possible as yet undiscovered deposits, generated through the use of rank statistics (ie ZipfÆs law), provide a basis for future strategic consideration in exploration targeting in this and similar geological terranes.

DURING the course of an investigation on the high-temperature creep behavior of TD Nickel* (Ni + 2) vol pct ThO2), it was observed that the creep fractures were similar in appearance to low-temperature ductile fibrous fractures and creep ruptures by cavitation. Microfractographs of fibrous ruptures are typically characterized by a dimpled appearance, with second-phase particles frequently found near the bottom of the dimples.&apos;-4 These somewhat resemble creep ruptures by cavitation, in that fracture occurs by void formation, with the subsequent growth and final merging of the voids to form a complete fracture.&apos; It is the purpose of this communication to describe the creep fracture of TD nickel and suggest a mechanism for the rupturing process. The discussion is relevant to material crept to fracture in vacuo at a constant stress of 18,000 psi, over the temperature range 900" to ll00°C. The material used in this investigation was 1/2-in.-diam bar stock supplied by Du Pont, contain- ing 2.3 vol pct Tho2. The final fabrication treatment consisted of -95 pct reduction by swaging followed by a 1-hr anneal at 1000°C. Transmission and replica electron microscopy revealed that the material had a fibered structure with a transverse grain size of -1 µ and a longitudinal grain size of 10 to 15 µ. Selected-area diffraction indicated that the fiber axis was parallel to (00l), in agreement with the results of Inman et a1.6 The thoria particle size varied from 80 to 1000Å, with an average size of 400Å, and the mean particle spacing was about 1200Å. The remarkable structural stability7 was confirmed by annealing for 6 hr at 1300°C (about &apos; 0.9 the absolute melting point). Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the only structural change was a slight decrease in dislocation density. Furthermore, recrystallization or grain growth during creep has not been observed. All specimens were annealed in vacuo at 1300°C for 3 hr prior to creep testing. "It has been estimated conservatively that the costs of wear damage and friction in the Canadian mining and mineral processing industry amount to over one billion dollars per year. These are mainly incurred through the repair or replacement of worn parts and production losses from related equipment downtime. The selection and application of the most appropriate wear protection components and systems, can thus have a very significant influence on productivity, profitability and global competitiveness.Details are presented of the wide diversity of materials used to counteract the varied and often complex wear attack mechanisms that occur in surface mining. The majority are various forms of steels and irons with generally very high hardness. However, they also include relatively soft elastomers and polymeric products.The main characteristics and applications of the different classes are reviewed. Case studies record significant performance improvements achieved through more judicious selections. Finally, some new developments which reduce maintenance charges by substantially increasing wear component life, are described."

Rehabilitation, reclamation and restoration are all terms used to describe the repair of land after mining. Here, restoration is used to mean restoring the land&apos;s original use, capability or productivity. Effective restoration is dependent on good planning before mining commences and must include a clear definition of post-mining objectives. The physical condition of the land within the mining licence was that of an imperfectly drained soil in permanent pasture, supporting a seasonal supply dairying unit. During the mining process, the soil layers were separated, with the topsoil stockpiled separately. As part of the restoration process, the land was recontoured to encourage surface drainage, with topsoil spread evenly over the recontoured tailings. Low grond pressure machinery was used to minimise soil compaction, with light discing and harrowing used to increase water infiltration. A permanent pasture was sown, with weed species controlled by spraying, both before and after pasture establishment. &nbsp;Soil testing has been used extensively to ensure there were no nutrient deficiencies that good compromise pasture establishment and performance. Controlled grazing practices were used to ensure that the sown pastures became well established.

Apatite Fission Track Analysis (AFTA) is a thermal history reconstruction tool that enables determination of magnitude and timing of maximum paleotemperature and paleo-geothermal gradient at the time of maximum paleotemperatures. From this information, the amount of section missing at major unconfornities can be estimated and incorporated into basin models. The Gippsland Basin has a number of distinct problems that can be tackled using AFTA. 1. The nature of the regional break between the Late Cretaceous-Tertiary Latrobe Group and the underlying Early Cretaceous Strzelecki Group. 2. The tectonic history of the basement flanking the basin and its effect on sediment composition. 3. The age of igneous activity in the basin, as typified by the widespread basaltic plugs and dykes intruding the outcropping Strzelecki Group. Major uplift and erosion within, and adjacent to, the early Cretaceous rift basin in the Mid-Cretaceous, at -95 to 100 Ma, initially constrained the Latrobe Group depositional area to the central deep of the Gippsland Basin and provided an elevated source of quartz-rich detritus for the Latrobe Group reservoirs. This is in marked contrast to the preceding period in the early Cretaceous when contemporaneous volcanism dominated as a source of detritus, producing quartz-poor lithic sandstones, in which a host of attendant diagenetic reactions destroyed their reservoir potential. Initial uplift and erosion of the volcanogenic Strzelecki Group also occurred in the mid-Cretaceous as revealed by a number of distinct inversion structures, and erosion of this material will have locally provided very poor quality sand to the basal Latrobe Group.

"This paper reviews flowsheets generally used in gold rooms to upgrade primary gravity concentrates particularly those of Knelsons. It is concluded that even for small operations, which treat between 250 and lo00 kg of concentrates per day, there is a strong economic incentive to include in the flowsheet magnetic removal of tramp iron, at least two shaking tables, screening of either table feed or table tails at 150-212 um, and scavenging of table tails with a small centrifuge. Headroom, rather than floor space, is often inadequate in most gold room designs, and limits gravity flow and flowsheet flexibility. Experimental data are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of a small Knelson Concentrator to scavenge significant amounts of gold (up to 91 %) from fine table tails.RésuméCet article examine les schémas d’évolution généralement utilisés pour traiter les concentres gravimétriques d‘or, en particulier ceux produits par concentrateur Knelson. Nous en venons à la conclusion que même pour un petit circuit d’une capacité de 250 A 1000 kg/jour pourrait bénéficier des opérations unitaires suivantes : concentrateur magnétique pour extraire la feraille, au moins deux tables A secousses, criblage de l’alimentation ou du rejet d’une ou des tables i une maille de 150-212 um, et épuisages des rejets fins de table avec un centrifuge de petite capacité. C’est l’espace vertical du lieu où se fait cette concentration qui représente la contrainte la plus importante, plutôt que sa surface, puisqu’il faut maximiser l’écoulement par gravite des pulpes et s’offrir une certaine flexibilité quant à l’agencement final des opérations unitaires. Nesse trabalho, foram realizados ensaios de abrasão do tipo roda de borracha em um aço ASTM A242, com o intuito de verificar se a orientação do desgaste em relação à da laminação influencia no comportamento em desgaste do material. Estes ensaios foram executados seguindo a norma ASTM G65-16. Todas as amostras foram fresadas e lixadas para a realização dos ensaios, além de limpas com acetona para medição da massa tanto antes quanto depois do ensaio de desgaste. Utilizando a massa perdida após o ensaio e considerando um possível desgaste da roda de borracha, foi calculado o volume perdido nos ensaios. Além disso, foi medida a microdureza do aço, nos sentidos transversal e longitudinal à laminação, bem como analisadas as microestruturas nos respectivos sentidos antes e depois dos ensaios de desgaste. Os resultados mostraram que a orientação do desgaste em relação à orientação de laminação possui influência na taxa de desgaste e que no sentido transversal à laminação essa taxa foi 9,6% menor que no sentido longitudinal.
