Several Approaches to Enhance the Bioleaching of Enargite Some approaches were investigated to enhance the recovery of Cu from enargite by bioleaching with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans using the galvanic interaction with pyrite and activated carbon, and with thermophilic bacteria, Acidianus brierleyi. Addition of pyrite initially enhanced Cu leaching by the Galvanic effect, but after that the formation of secondary minerals passivated the surface of enargite in inoculated batches. Activated carbon improved Cu recovery from enargite much better than pyrite, when it is contacted with enargite. Recovery of Cu from enargite has been recorded to at largest 2.4 per cent within 30 days in the presence of activated carbon when mesophilic bacteria were inoculated at 25¦C. The recovery of Cu from enargite was drastically enhanced by inoculation of thermophilic bacteria, Acidianus brierleyi, up to 60 per cent within 40 days at 70¦C and still not leveled off after 40 days unless the formation of Fe(III) precipitates occurred. After 40 days dissolved molar ratio of Cu/As is around 5.2, suggesting that metal-deficient sulfides and/or ferric arsenate might be formed on the surface of enargite.

Development of the Batu Hijau Project was successfully completed in the fourth quarter of 1999 with the final handover and start-up of ore processing facilities. The development project had started more than three years earlier, in August 1996, when the Owner, PT. Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT), awarded an EPC contract to Fluor Daniel (FD) for design and construction of the project including: copper concentrator, port, power plant, town site, and infrastructure. PTNNT managed the development of the mine and procurement of mine equipment with its own forces. Bringing the Batu Hijau copper deposit into production was the largest mining project ever undertaken. Development of Batu Hijau was a complex project involving the work of tens of thousands of people in all parts of the world to complete engineering, manufacture and deliver equipment, supply materials, and build the plant. The ore deposit is located on the tropical island of Sumbawa in a remote and undeveloped section of Indonesia. The location and environment presented challenges for all phases and aspects of the project. To meet the challenges, the project team combined good planning and teamwork to best utilize the resources available. This approach assured continuity of personnel through construction to operations and minimized cost, resulting in completion of the project ahead of schedule and under budget.

This article is a review of previous discussions about underground mining method selection and classification with the purpose to clearly define and classify the two groups of variables (indicators) involved in the mining selection process: key deposit indicators (KDIs) and key mining method indicators (KMIs). This paper provides a simple and clear approach for the classification and selection of a feasible underground mining method based on a predetermined set of favorable deposit characteristics, which are defined as key deposit indictors (KDIs). This article also gives a summary of the key advantages and disadvantages associated with every underground mining method based on their key mining indicators (KMIs). The selection method given in this paper is based on defining field KDIs and comparing them to the KDIs that are favorable to every considered mining method. By cross validating a matrix of favorable KDIs, the paper presents a simple approach to rank several underground mining methods using a scale from favorable to less favorable accordingly to the ore deposit characteristics (KDIs). KMIs are used to further complement KDI rankings by analyzing every method’s KMI performance based on the expected productivity of the mining operation being considered. To further assist the reader through the selection process, this paper gives basic sketches representing each of the primary underground mining methods discussed in this paper. Each method is given using the same 3D isometric view as spatial reference to assist the reader with visual interpretation and comparison between methods.

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) Sorting in the Upgrading and Processing of Skorpion Non-Sulfide Zinc Ore In 2008 Anglo American sponsored a research project at RWTH Aachen University to assess the feasibility of the use of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for ore waste discrimination at the Skorpion zinc mine. The Skorpion mine is an open pit zinc mine located in Namibia, owned by Anglo American with an annual production of 150 000 t/a of super high grade pure zinc. Opportunities for the implementation of NIRS sorting for the Skorpion process exist to upgrade currently subeconomic material, including the marginal dump (over 2000 000 tonnes, av grade of 2.5 per cent Zn). NIRS sorting is not yet implemented or established in the minerals industry however it is a proven technology in the plastics recycling industry, where more than 2000 NIRS sorters have already been installed. NIRS sorting, a type of sensor-based sorting, is a single particle sorting technique which classifies the particles based on the absorbed/reflected radiation in the near-infrared (NIR) region. A disadvantage of NIRS is that it is a surface measurement technique, but NIRS sorting shows overall great potential for the minerals industry. Skorpion ore minerals include zinc bearing phases such as sauconite, hemimorphite, smithsonite, and hydrozincite. These display diagnostic responses in the near-infrared. There are three major absorption features that characterise the reflectance spectra of the ore bearing minerals. These are due to OH and H2O molecular bonds. The spectral response of the waste material is caused by other minerals such as non-zinc-bearing clay minerals, calcite and impure quartz. Test work showed that it is theoretically possible to separate ore material from most waste material based on spectral response in the NIR region. In addition to upgrading material by removal of waste it is also potentially feasible to classify the material based on zinc grade. A tentative correlation between zinc grade and spectral response seems to exist for the sample test suite in the NIR region.

A utilização de lasers de pulsos ultracurtos é uma alternativa para a realização de microusinagem em superfícies de metais, com aplicações diversas em inúmeros segmentos industriais, além das áreas aeronáutica, aeroespacial e naval, onde há crescente preocupação com a eletrônica embarcada. Neste trabalho foram realizadas microusinagens em superfícies de titânio utilizando laser de pulsos ultracurtos de femtossegundos. Tal processo resultou em mínima transferência de calor para o material, evitando assim e deformação superficial da chapa de titânio e a formação de material ressolidificado na região ablacionada, que são inconvenientes presentes na utilização do laser chaveado de pulsos longos da ordem de nanossegundos. Foram executados três tipos de microusinagens, com variações nas distâncias entre as linhas usinadas. Foi verificado ainda que a molhabilidade aumenta quando há o aumento da distância entre linhas usinadas. Finalmente, para a alteração da superfície com uma ínfima remoção de material, constatou-se que a utilização de lasers de pulsos ultracurtos proporcionam grandes benefícios para a integridade do material ablacionado.

Cristais da família cristalográfica do sal de Tutton A2B(XO4)2.6H2O, A=K, NH4, Rb, Cs, Tl, B=Mg, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, V, Cr, X=S e Se tem sido investigados por diversas técnicas experimentais com o objetivo de compreender suas propriedades físicas e potenciais aplicações tecnológicas. Investigações sobre o comportamento estrutural têm sido realizadas por difração de raios-x a fim de compreender suas propriedades estruturais, principalmente a distorção Jahn-Teller presentes nos cristais com cromo e cobre. Soluções sólidas destes sais na forma A2B'xB”(1-x)- (SO4)2.6H2O, têm sido relativamente pouco investigadas embora possam apresentar distorção Jahn-Teller. O desempenho dos eletrodos nos fornos elétricos a arco, depende, essencialmente, de três grupos de fatores distintos. O primeiro é a sua qualidade intrínseca, expressa em termos de resistividade, densidade, porosidade etc., cujos valores são dependentes dos materiais e procedimentos empregados na sua fabricação. O segundo se refere aos parâmetros/procedimentos operacionais do forno elétrico, que são função do produto, da carga, dos recursos do forno, dos resultados objetivados etc. O terceiro é relacionado aos procedimentos praticados no manuseio, montagem, armazenagem etc., dos eletrodos, desde a sua recepção na planta, até seu consumo. Este trabalho se propõe a revisar e comentar alguns dos aspectos relevantes de cada um daqueles fatores, com ênfase no terceiro, assim como identificar o modo como cada ação influi no desempenho dos eletrodos.

To improve SO2 emission compliance, pyrrhotite from Sudbury copper-nickel ores is being depressed with DETA. To understand the mechanism of depression, the role of complexing in controlling metal-ion activation of pyrrhotite was investigated. DETA was found to remove Cu and Ni ions but leave hydrophilic ferric species on the pyrrhotite surface. The metal:DETA ratio appeared to be 1:2. Cu was more readily removed than Ni, but the combination of DETA with sulphur dioxide was equally effective for both metal ions. Certain combinations of DETA, Ni ions, xanthate and dithionite (S2O4) or dithionate (S2O6), as representative derivatives of SO2 in water, produced hydrophilic precipitates. Pós fluxantes desempenham um papel significativo na qualidade do aço durante o processo de lingotamento contínuo. Os pós fluxantes são escórias sintéticas usadas para lubrificar o molde durante o lingotamento contínuo do aço. Para que isso ocorra, o fluxante deve apresentar as seguintes funções: isolamento químico e térmico do aço, absorção de inclusões não metálicas do aço, lubrificação do molde e controle da transferência de calor entre o aço e o molde. O desempenho de cada função está relacionado às propriedades químicas e físicas do pó fluxante, que são dependentes de sua composição química e sua composição mineral, devido a sua relação com a taxa de fusão do material. A fim de garantir uma produção eficiente e de alta qualidade durante o lingotamento de um aço ultra baixo carbono, os pós fluxantes A e B foram investigados de acordo com diferentes propriedades físico-químicas. Diversos experimentos laboratoriais foram realizados para comparar o desempenho dos materiais A e B, visando à diminuição de captura da escória pelo aço no molde: avaliação do comportamento de fusão e fluidez, composição química e viscosidade. As temperaturas de processo foram avaliadas através de testes estatísticos, visando caracterizar o fluxo de calor e o trabalho de fricção durante lingotamento. Os testes industriais preliminares, realizados na Ternium Brasil, foram conduzidos com o objetivo de analisar o comportamento do pó fluxante durante a operação de lingotamento contínuo em relação a alguns aspectos operacionais e fornecer informações sobre sua influência na qualidade superficial do aço. Os resultados mostraram que, aumentando a viscosidade do fluxante, o consumo de pó tornou-se menor, levando a um maior trabalho de fricção e menor fluxo de calor no molde. No entanto, o comportamento da camada de escória mostrou que, apesar do aumento da força de atrito no molde, a espessura da escória foi adequada e não houve relatos de defeitos superficiais durante o uso do material fluxante de maior viscosidade.

O sistema ferro-oxigênio alumino tem sido investigado há muitos anos em função de sua importância para a indústria do aço. Uma grande fração de todo o aço plano produzido é de aço de baixo carbono acalmado ao alumínio, não apenas pelo baixo conteúdo de oxigênio residual em solução que pode ser obtido mas, também, pela importância do alumínio residual na formação de AlN, ferramenta importante no controle de estrutura e textura obtidas. O sistema Fe-O é relativamente bem compreendido e quantificado, da mesma forma que o sistema Fe-Al. Entretanto, há discrepâncias significativas na quantificação do comportamento do sistema Fe-Al-O havendo, ainda, bastante controvérsia com respeito a equilíbrios importantes. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é (a) realizar uma revisão crítica dos experimentos e avaliações termodinâmicas principalmente do equilíbrio Al-Fe-O–Al2O3 (b) avaliar os métodos atualmente usados para descrever este equilíbrio e (c) apresentar recomendações sobre os dados, com base em sua confiabilidade e consistência.

"Determination of the optimum design of chain pillars has a significant effect on the economics and safety of longwall operations. Most pillar design formulae are based on empirical methods and supplemented by local experience. They therefore lack versatility of application under different geotechnical conditions.In this paper, in order to illustrate the shortcomings of the above, a typical real coal pillar in Tabas coal mine has first been studied and the conventional formulae have been used to determine the optimum dimensions. The results show that a wide difference exists between the predicted and the real field data. The Oraee-Hosseini formula has then been applied to this mine in order to determine the optimum design. The results from this formula demonstrate a close fit between the theoretical VALUES (and those produced by laboratory tests and in practice. It is further demonstrated that the wide discrepancy between the results obtained from the two formulae is attributed to the dissimilarities between geotechnical conditions of Tabas and the original regions whose data were used to devise the empirical formulae.It is finally concluded that the application of numerical simulation methods and experimental equations together with engineering judgment used by the mining design engineer, will provide the most accurate design characteristics.INTRODUCTIONLongwall is an underground mining method which has a high rate of production capacity and mechanization ability. This mining method, which is appropriately applied for soft rock fiatlying bedded ore bodies, gradually became a widespread mining method amongst European coal mines at the beginning of the 19'h century. It was then applied in some of the U.S. coal mines with the development of self advancing support mechanisms in early 1960's (Oraee, 2001).Underground coal production around the world using Longwall mining method doubled during 1990s. The main reasons for this improvement were: the high level of mechanization, increased 10 safety, adequate design of panels, and well designed ventilation systems (Peng, 2006)."

In 2017, Bauer Foundation Corp. (BFC) was awarded the contract to install the deep foundations for the new 17-story Hotel Tower and the Low Rise Casino Expansion at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Tampa, Florida. The site was underlain by extremely challenging Florida Limestone geology and surrounded by occupied existing buildings and infrastructure. To overcome the challenges of the difficult subsurface conditions, and to successfully complete the foundation installation without impact to the surrounding buildings and casino operation, Langan Engineering (EOR) and BFC were required to modify both the design and installation techniques during construction. The scope of work included 147 temporarily cased drilled shafts to depths up to 230 ft (70 m) below ground surface (BGS), 76 permanently cased micropiles up to 200 ft (61 m) BGS, and more than 300 augered-cast-in-place (ACIP) piles up to 125 ft (38 m) BGS. Voids and zones of high permeability in the limestone created many challenges for execution of the foundation scope including ACIP piles overbreaks of more than 400% above neatline volume, and construction induced ground subsidence/collapses adjacent to structures supported on shallow foundations. This paper will discuss site limitations, design and construction challenges, difficult geology, varied soil conditions, and lessons learned. PROJECT The project is located at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Tampa, Florida, as shown in Fig. 1. Seminole Tribe, the owner, started the construction of a new 17-story Hotel Tower and the Low-Rise Casino Expansion at the beginning of 2017.

"Center Hill Dam is a critical part of the infrastructure controlling floods at the Caney Fork River and reducing flood levels at the Cumberland, lower Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. The Center Hill Dam Foundation Remediation Project was necessary to address Karst features in the foundation rocks and observed signs of distress of the dam. From 2011 to 2014 BAUER Foundation Corp. (BFC) performed deep foundation works for this project. The executed features of work include the installation of two walls. The first wall extends throughout the clay embankment into the underlying rock to provide encasement during the construction of the second wall. Its width of 7.4 feet makes it the widest diaphragm wall ever installed. The second wall is the actual seepage barrier and provides a continuous 2- feet wide wall. It extends through the first wall into the underlying rock and is up to 300 feet deep. The paper introduces the project, the requirements specified by United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for encasement and barrier wall and the approaches taken by BFC. It discusses the ground conditions and describes the excavation equipment as well as the excavation methods used. A special focus is put on the steering capabilities of the hydrocutter equipment and the verticality performance.PROJECTBeginning in 2011, BFC was tasked by the USACE with the installation of a seepage barrier/cutoff wall at the Center Hill Dam Foundation Remediation project under a partially performance based specification. The remediation was necessary due to karst features in the foundation rocks and observed signs of distress, which led USACE to rate the dam with the most critical dam safety action classification (DSAC I). The executed features of work include the installation of two walls. The first wall, an encasement wall, extends vertically through the clay embankment and is embedded minimally into the underlying bedrock to provide embankment stability during the construction of the second wall, the barrier wall. The encasement wall is constructed of overlapping panels 7.4 feet (2.25 m) wide, which is the widest diaphragm wall ever installed, and up to 210 feet (64 m) deep. The second wall is the seepage barrier and provides a continuous 2 feet (0.6 m) wide wall consisting of overlapping panels. It extends through the encasement wall into the underlying bedrock and is up to 307 feet (93 m) deep. BAUER BC40 and BC50 hydrocutters mounted on MC96 and MC128 foundation cranes were used to perform the majority of the works (Figure 1). Excavations were performed under bentonite slurry (encasement wall) and water (barrier wall) and concrete was poured with the tremie method. Adding to the challenges, the project had to be executed in an environmentally sensitive area. Based on the high risk, a special focus was put on monitoring, quality control and geometric accuracy. The WallTracker information management system was used to share all relevant data between BFC and USACE (Roff et al. 2014)."

The topic of the relationships between energy and particle size has had two very active periods -the first in the early thirties, when the relative merits of Rittinger's and Kick's proposals were vigorously debated; the second in the early fifties, when Bond's Third Theory was published. This second stage has produced several contributions that have provided a clearer picture of energy /size correlations in comminution. Derivations of a general relationship have been made from single-fracture experiments and from the rate of comminution, and both methods arrive at an equation of the type E = AK-11? The constant A in the equation may be regarded as a grindability parameter. In some respects, an understanding of the phenomena associated with comminution is still lacking, and research in this field should therefore be expanded. Information on Part I – Side slope leaching (SME 2003), Part II – Determining the dry zones using geophysical resistivity (SME 2004), and Part III - Presents a new technology “Hydro-Jex”, to introduce the required lixiviants to the un-leach or under-leach zones in heaps (SME 2005). The Government signalled its intention in the Economic Statement on 17 December 1987 to improve the fairness of the taxation system and to facilitate the process of economic adjustment by: removing tax concessions that benefit some taxpayers at the expense of other taxpayers,ensuring that those who can afford it shoulder their fair share of the tax burden,securing a revenue base which will provide sufficient resources to maintain effective social services,reducing artificial protection and concessions that discriminate against some sectors, and encouraging confidence through an economic environment with a medium-term orientation. The Government has clearly stated to all sectors that tax preferences will be phased out and businesses need to look inwardly to their investment policies if they are to survive in an open economy. This paper will address the effect of these Government objectives on the taxation structure for all forms of mineral exploration in New Zealand. The present tax structure will firstly be analysed, in particular setting out the tax advantages available to the industry. The effect of changes to the tax system within the recent past which relate to mineral exploration will then be examined. Finally the paper will address the question of possible future changes, particularly in the light of Government's intention to move towards a tax system which does not provide an advantage for any one sector of the economy.

Electrowon tungsten powders were investigated with respect to consolidation, fabrication, and mechanical properties. Sheet, 0.03 inch thick, was produced and its tensile strength measured between 250° and 1,935° C. The large particle size of electrowon tungsten effectively precluded sintering to a density sufficient to allow hot working to sheet or bar. The powders were consolidated by die pressing to 70-percent density, sheathing in molybdenum, and high-energy-rate extruding to either round or sheet bar of 100-percent density. The material was then rolled conventionally to sheet. The mechanical properties of the sheet prepared from the electrowon powders compared favorably with those reported in the literature for sheet prepared from commercially produced hydrogen-reduced powder.

The use of carbide tipped integral drill steels and detachable bits is discussed in relation to the means of drilling or cutting employed. It is stressed that only by correct use can the full value of these tools be realised.Factors affecting carbide quality, the design of shanking steels and the requirements and techniques of brazing in inserts are considered.It is essential that the brazed jointing between carbide and steel be strong but ductile. The methods used for the manufacture of carbide tipped tools are briefly outlined.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years the application of tungsten carbide to various mining tools in the mining industry, has developed to the stage where it is now regarded as an essential item in the production of coal and metal ores. In fact it is claimed that certain mining operations would not be possible if it were not for the benefits obtainable from the characteristic properties of tungsten carbide. The advantages of this hardmetal have, to some extent, influenced manufacturers to revise design specifiations of some machines, while againsome machines have actually been designed with tungsten carbide as their basic medium for operation.In general the applications fall into the following three categories:(a) Drilling hard rock by percussive means.(b) Drilling soft rock and coal by rotary means.(c) Coal cuttingThis paper is concerned with tungsten carbide tools associated with these three activities in Australia, the effectiveness of their application and significant points in their design and manufacture.
