"The aim of this investigation was to determine the most suitable additive for recovering metals from converter slags generated during Ni extraction. Fluxes analyzed were silica and lime and reductants included pig iron, ferrosilicon and copper-silicon compound. Slag was settled at 1300°C for one hour to simulate the smelting environment. The newly formed matte and slag were characterized by chemical composition and morphology. Microstructural studies showed that slag formed after adding reductants consisted of primarily fayalite, with traces of magnetite. Entrained matte was present in the slag mostly as prills of Ni3S2-FeS matrix and a Cu2S-FeS secondary phase below 10µm in diameter. Kinetic parameters of matte formation, valuable metal recovery rates and partition coefficients were deduced. Silica additions generated higher partition coefficients for copper and nickel than the addition of lime. Additives used as reducing agents had higher valuable metal recovery rates and partition coefficients. Silica additions favoured the formation a higher grade matte while lime additions will hinder metal recovery. Pig iron, ferrosilicon and Cu30Si were the most effective reductants for valuable metals recovery. Cu10Si and coke additions had little to no effect on valuable metals recovery."

In spite of advances in measurement techniques and an explosive increase in the volume of research, our understanding of human strength remains in its introductory stages. It is clear that muscle strength is a highly complex and variable function that depends on a large number of factors. It is not surprising, therefore, that large differences in strength exist not only between individuals, but even within the same individual tested repeatedly on a given piece of equipment. The issue is compounded by the fact that correlations of strength among different muscle groups in the same individual are generally low, and tests of isometric strength do not necessarily reflect the strength an individual might exhibit in a dynamic test. As a result of these and other influences, great care needs to be exercised in designing, evaluating, reporting, and interpreting muscular strength assessments. Traditionally, tests of muscular strength were in the domain of the orthopaedist, physical therapist, and exercise physiologist. Such tests are also an important tool for the ergonomist, however, because of the high strength demands on workers in manual materials-handling tasks. In some cases, task demands may approach or even exceed the strength that an individual is voluntarily willing to exert in a test of strength. In such cases, evidence suggests that the likelihood of injury is significantly greater than when the task demands lie well within an individual's strength capacity. Because the relationship among strength capabilities, job demands, and musculoskeletal injury has been established, it is apparent that tests of muscular strength may benefit the ergonomist both in designing jobs and in ensuring that individuals have sufficient strength to safely perform physically demanding jobs. Several strength assessment techniques have been employed for these purposes, each possessing unique characteristics and applicability to job design and worker selection procedures. Our main purpose has been to elucidate these strengths and weaknesses, so that tests of strength may be properly applied in designing jobs and selecting workers. One of the crucial points we have emphasized is that any test of strength used in job design or worker selection must be directly related to the demands of the job.(1) For example, if an occupational lifting task has a high dynamic component, a test of isometric strength is not likely to provide the data necessary for proper design of the job. Of course, dynamic strength tests would also be misapplied in assessing a job requiring isometric exertions. Another potential pitfall is using tests of strength on isolated muscle groups and assuming that they are indicative of whole-body strength. For example, one might mistakenly assume that dynamic trunk extension strength represents a person's capability to perform a lifting task. However, an individual's lifting capacity may be entirely unrelated to trunk extension strength. It may, instead, be limited by an individual's arm or leg strength, depending on the task being performed. A final point on strength assessment should be made. The wetting characteristics and water film stability at the talc surface have been studied, particularly the effect of polysaccharides such as guar gum, starch, and dextrin. Talc is a gangue mineral in the flotation of base metal sulfide ores, precious metal sulfide ores, and platinum group metal (PGM) sulfide ores. Talc surfaces were investigated using surface analysis techniques including atomic force microscopy, high-speed video bubble attachment measurements, and wetting film stability measurements using a synchronized tri-wavelength reflection interferometry microscope (STRIM). In the presence of polysaccharides, there is a significant increase in bubble attachment time at the talc surface, but only a slight change in contact angle, which suggests that polysaccharide depression of talc is due primarily to the slow rate of bubble attachment and not due to a change in contact angle. The critical rupture thickness (hc) for a hydrophobic talc surface was found to be 56 nm, while the hydrophilic phlogopite surface of similar structure has an equilibrium film thickness (he) of 25 nm. At low polysaccharide concentrations, the wetting films formed on the talc surfaces were unstable, but at high concentrations the wetting films became stable with similar thickness values as the critical rupture thickness, and bubble attachment did not occur. However, it was found that the critical and equilibrium film thickness values do not change significantly with the polysaccharide type or concentration. The results from this research help us understand further details of film rupture and displacement during bubble attachment.

Este trabalho propôs-se a otimizar os parâmetros de soldagem do processo FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) através da análise do projeto de experimentos (Design of Experiments - DOE) utilizando a Metodologia de Superfície de Resposta (Response Surface Methodology – RSM). Após a determinação dos parâmetros de soldagem ideais, foi realizado a caracterização mecânica e metalúrgica de uma junta soldada com estes parâmetros a fim de certificar-se das propriedades da junta com parâmetros de soldagem otimizados.

The mining industry has recognised for some time the importance of supporting programs which serve to educate the Australian public about the socio-economic benefits of mineral resource development. More recently, industry leaders have realised that the future development of the industry will depend on attracting sufficient young people to commit to a career in the industry. Apart from lending support to the traditional education institutions in Australia, the industry now has the opportunity to participate in the development of education programs in museums. Whilst historic, mining-related theme parks such as Sovereign Hill and Coal Creek in Victoria serve very effectively the objective of relating past mining activities to the socio-economic development of Australia, there still exists the need to provide a facility which, under the same roof, excites interest in geology, mining, mineral processing and the role of minerals and energy in modern society. The redeveloped Geological and Mining Museum (the "Mining Museum"), which is located in The Rocks area of Sydney, meets this objective. With the central themes of formation and transformation this new Museum, which aims to be the best of its type in the world, will use modern museum exhibit techniques and the resources of the Minerals and Energy Information Centre to educate the community including teachers and school children. In the best tradition of museums, outstanding mineral and other collections will complement a comprehensive range of interactive, high technology exhibits which will include a number of exploratory "hands on" facilities. Australian companies are joining with Government to fund this exciting new museum. There is still a need for industry professionals to realise that a modern "mining" museum is no longer just a repository for objects of mining heritage but is also an important centre which serves as an important educational and public relations interface. The Education Section of the new "Mining Museum", which is linked closely with the new Minerals and Energy Information Centre, will be working closely with appropriate mining-related Tertiary institutions to develop specific career programs aimed at secondary students who wish to pursue a career in the mineral resource industries.

A produção de aço com baixo teor de enxofre é de extrema importância para a indústria naval e de tubos para a indústria de petróleo. Porém, a fabricação destes aços acarreta um maior desgaste do revestimento refratário das panelas de transporte/tratamento de aço das aciarias devido às condições operacionais mais severas (maiores tempos de processo, maiores temperaturas, adições de fluxantes de escória, etc.) exigidas durante o processamento destes aços. Neste trabalho é apresentado o modelamento estatístico do impacto da fabricação deste tipo de aço, via rota de tratamento metalúrgico de dessulfuração de aço, na campanha refrataria (vida) das panelas conjuntamente com a análise post-mortem de tijolos refratários da linha de escória de uma das panelas. O modelamento levou em consideração os dados de 6 meses de operação da aciaria de uma usina integrada com capacidade de 4,5 Mt/ano. A análise dos resultados revelou que os altos tempos de tratamento no refino secundário, especialmente utilizando o forno panela como equipamento de dessulfuração, a adição de compostos fluxantes de escórias contendo sódio, como nefelina, são os principais fatores que degradam a vida do refratário de tais panelas. Enhanced gravity separators (EGS) provide a more efficient separation than froth flotation when cleaning coal in the 150 x 25 µm particle size range. To improve the performance of an EGS unit, air bubbles were injected into the feed stream in an attempt to decrease the apparent density of the coal particles due to the formation of bubble-coal particle agglomerates. Air injection had a significant impact on operating characteristics and separation performance. Coal recovery was increased by 10 to 20 absolute percentage points while a 2 percentage point drop in the minimum product ash content was also achieved.

Neste trabalho foi estudada a corrosão dos aços API 5L B e X52MS em soluções ácidas descritas nas normas NACE TM0284 e TM0177. A susceptibilidade ao trincamento induzido pelo hidrogênio (HIC) foi determinada em cada meio, os produtos de corrosão foram caracterizados por microscopia eletrônica de varredura e espectrometria de energia dispersiva de raios-X e, posteriormente identificados por difratometria de raios-X. Conclui-se que o pH afeta diretamente a solubilidade dos produtos de corrosão e a permeação de hidrogênio. Na solução 177-A, ambos os aços sofreram corrosão generalizada, enquanto que na solução 177-B foi evidenciada a presença de um filme fino descontinuo. Somente o API 5L B não passou no teste de HIC. Na solução 284-B de maior pH, os aços apresentaram filmes espessos e o trincamento pelo hidrogênio não foi observado.

Com o objetivo de prover informações precisas, coesas e em tempo real aos gestores da Diretoria da Usina Presidente Vargas (UPV) para a tomada de decisões, foi criado o projeto para Gestão de Indicadores de Desempenho em Tempo Real com o foco no processo produtivo e performance das áreas de Laminação (a quente e a frio), Zincagem e Folhas Metálicas. O projeto foi desenvolvido em fases, onde cada fase contemplava um determinado número de equipamentos, áreas e plantas, com visualização em drill down. Utilizando os conceitos de Data Visualization e Operational Intelligence, foi possível integrar e centralizar as informações de diversas fontes de dados, tais como, PIMS, MES, LIMS, ERP, Supervisórios, PROCOM's e entradas manuais. Padronizar as informações de controle do processo produtivo entre os gestores facilita a identificação de problemas e suas causas, e permite analisar simultaneamente várias áreas e plantas. Exibir em tempo real perdas operacionais em decorrência de desvios de processo, torna o processo de tomada de decisão mais rápido e assertivo, contribuindo para a melhoria da performance dos equipamentos, redução de riscos de falhas, e além disso aumenta a vida útil dos equipamentos e otimiza a monitoração dos processos.

"Resistivity measurements of minerals in the laboratory are commonly made with a low DC voltage source. Common test voltages specified in the ASTM Standard D257 are 100, 250, 500, 1000, 2500, 5000, 10000 and 15000 V, however 100 and 500 V are the most frequently used. Resistivity results obtained in the laboratory have been used to infer the electrical behaviour of minerals undergoing electrostatic separation. However because the voltages employed in electrostatic separation in the plant are of the order of thousands of volts, typically greater than 15000 V, whether the laboratory results are applicable as a predictor of plant performance is a critical question. It is unclear whether resistivity values taken at a low voltage are characteristic of those seen in electrostatic separation, in which the minerals are exposed to a much higher voltage. No definitive answer could be found in the literature.In this work, the resistivities of zircon, rutile and ilmenite were measured in a corona field for the first time. The measurement principle was based on a technique developed to measure fly ash resistivity in electrostatic precipitators, however the test apparatus and findings are novel.Resistivities of rutile and zircon were found to be easy to measure. The values measured in a corona field were several orders of magnitude less than those obtained with a dc voltage of 100 V. Evidence of back corona was observed with zircon. When the voltage drop was greater than the sample layer could withstand a localised electrical stress developed, resulting in a voltage breakdown, at which point a sudden surge of corona current (back corona) was detected in the sample layer. Rutile, on the other hand, exposed to the same conditions as that of zircon (i.e. same temperature and applied voltage) did not exhibit any sign of back corona. Its resistivity across the range of test voltages (14 to 33 kV) remained fairly constant."

Detailed characteristics of gold from Pliocene auriferous quartz gravels from Waimumu (Southland) have been studied using a combination of optical microscopy, energy dispersive microprobe analysis and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The gold at Waimumu is classified as either: 1. detrital gold, or 2. irregular gold. A number of different morphologies a recognisable within each 'gold type'. Evidence is given for an predominently authigenic origin for some of the gold at Waimumu.

Australian rutile and zircon concentrates are refined raw materials and not manufactured products. The composition and properties of the grains are therefore fixed by nature. Specifications and assay certificates should take this into account by eliminating unnecessary provisions which only increase the time and cost of analysis.INTRODUCTIONThe raw material from which Australian rutile and zircon concentrates are isolated is beach sand on the coast of New South Wales and Southern Queensland. The principal current operations are in an area between Sydney and Brisbane.The sands consist principally of quartz particles, but they contain from 1 per cent to 50 per cent of a mixture of heavy minerals, including zircon, rutile, ilmenite, monazite, leucoxenic grains, chrome spinel, chromite, garnets, corundum, topaz, brown spinel, olivine, epidote, clinozoisite, tourmaline, magnetite, hematite, and cassiterite. The major components are zircon (25 to 60 per cent), rutile (25 to 50 per cent), and ilmenite (5 to 50 per cent).The so-called leucoxenic grains are not a definite mineral species but an alteration product of which the major components are titanium oxides and silica in varying proportions.Primary concentration is by gravity, using spirals or various forms of pinched sluice (Pullar, 1962), the resulting concentrates being redressed on wet tables. The winning process in mining operations ends with the depletion of the deposit or its closure if the operation becomes economically unprofitable. After that, a period of post-mining follows which may last for a very long time and which is generally regarded as a period of hazards, risk and high cost. In the USA alone, approximately 500,000 abandoned mines do exist; worldwide, there are millions. In Germany, too, we have had to deal with abandoned mines for a considerable period of time now.

O balanço de energia realizado em um forno de aquecimento de tarugos apresentou rendimento de 53%. A maior perda energética estava relacionada ao sistema de refrigeração dos skids, cujo valor calculado foi de 18%. Objetivando minimizar tais perdas, estudou-se a utilização de um novo tipo de revestimento refratário para esta região. O fabricante de refratários apresentou uma estimativa de ganho de 62%. Desta forma, a VBR planejou um teste para validar a eficiência do refratário proposto. Neste teste, o produto foi instalado em uma viga auxiliar. Esta viga foi instrumentada, e foram registrados dados de vazão, pressão e temperatura do fluido de refrigeração (água). Objetivando comparar estes valores com o material convencional anteriormente instalado, outra viga com as mesmas características (dimensões e posição no forno) também foi instrumentada. Posteriormente, foram feitos os balanços de energia em cada viga para quantificação das perdas de energia térmica. Os resultados encontrados mostram uma redução de 92% da perda térmica relacionada ao sistema de refrigeração dos skids. Considerando a eficiência do forno de 53% e a redução de 92% da perda térmica, estima-se uma economia de R$ 1.200.000 por ano.

There are many uncertainties that a mine designer should consider when selecting an optimal layout. Even though the inherent variability in the design parameters indicates that single-values are not representative of mining conditions, risk estimators such as ERR are often used without considering their statistical distributions. A probabilistic methodology has been developed to assess the influence of the extraction sequence and layout geometry on the rockburst risk associated with four ultra-deep mining layouts. The statistical distributions of incremental energy release rates and excess shear stresses at face elements are used as indirect estimators of rockburst risk in stopes, and the statistical distribution of the rock condition factor (RCF) is used as an indirect estimator of rockburst risk in tunnels and service excavations.

Os resultados foram validados através da superação da meta estabelecida para o projeto, onde o objetivo inicial foi aumentar em 8,1% a produtividade do equipamento em relação ao valor atual, porém conseguiu-se atingir o valor de 23,5% com um ganho anual de R$1,34 milhões.

Education and training research is a major component of the Bureau of Mines human factors research program. The goal of human factors research is to enhance human performance for the purpose of improving both safety and the profitability of the minerals industries. This is achieved through the design of mining equipment, work tasks, management procedures, and development of human resources. This proceedings volume presents several new developments that are helping to improve the quality and efficiency of health, safety, and occupational skills training in the mining community. Several papers address the issue of how to teach and assess miner abilities to deal with underground mine emergencies. Other papers examine practical procedures for defining and cost justifying the integration of structured training and other performance improvement strategies to enhance the proficiency of the work system.

Rates of prisnzatic plastic glide ( {1010}<2110>) in pure Cd crystals have been measured at temperatures from 158° to 276°C. The glide rate is proportional to the 2.75 power of the applied shear-stress. The activation energy is 29.2 kcal per mol. It is suggested that the rates of prismatic glide in Cd and Zn crystals are determined by the strengths of the atomic bonds across the prism planes. ALTHOUGH zinc and cadmium crystals both have hexagonal structures with nearly the same c/o ratios, their mechanical behaviors are quite different. Whereas zinc becomes quite brittle below room temperature, and cleaves readily on (0001) planes, cadmium is very ductile even at 4.2°K, and cannot be cleaved at any temperature. As part of a search for the explanation of this difference in behavior, a study has been made of prismatic glide in cadmium. It complements a previous study of the same phenomenon in zinc.1 The primary glide plane in cadmium is the basal (0001) plane, and the primary glide direction is the direction of atomic close-packing <2110>. However, if a tensile stress is applied parallel to the basal plane, then the shear stress on the basal plane equals zero so basal glide cannot occur. At low temperatures, deformation by twinning occurs; but at high temperatures, it has been found in this study that gliding on prismatic planes (1010) occurs in the close-packed direction. This is completely analogous with the case of zinc, except that lower temperatures are required. EXPERIMENTAL The experiments were done in nearly the same way as for zinc.&apos; Therefore, only the differences in the two sets of experiments will be described here; for other details the reader is referred to the previous paper. Crystals 6 by 6 mm sq were used that were grown from "Super Purity" 99.999 + pct Cd purchased from the New Jersey Zinc Co. The crystals were grown with their basal planes parallel to both the rod axis and one of the flat sides of the square cross section, A close-packed direction in the basal plane was oriented parallel to the rod axis. Gage sections were carefully machined into the crystals, and the surface damage caused by machining was removed with the same chemical polishing reagent as had been used for zinc. Thus, specimens of the same form and size as the previous zinc ones were produced. The crystals were heated to the test temperatures in a silicone oil bath (fused salts were tried first, but they reacted badly with the cadmium). An Instron tensile-testing machine was used for applying stresses to the crystals at various constant strain-rates. RESULTS The general behavior of cadmium crystals is much the same as for zinc.
