Idler engineering, operation, and maintenance cannot be covered in depth in a short paper. Therefore, this will be a general look into the subject matter in light or the present-day technology. Depending on the source or reference used, belts for handling bulk material underground came into being between 1900 and 1920, while strip mining appeared in the thirties. The conveyor belt speeds in that era were in the 300 rpm to 500 rpm range. Belt speeds or 600-700 rpm were in vogue in the thirties, and the early sixties saw speeds or 800-900 rpm. Today, speeds or 1000 rpm are not looked at with dismay; in fact, speeds or 2000 rpm are being discussed. Among the driving forces moving the bulk materials handling industry to these greater heights have been the mining operators and engineers. Their appetite to increase output, yield, and reduced per-ton costs has constantly challenged the bulk material handling industry to develop products capable or handling these increased capacities. One or the products affected by this movement is the idler. Apart from the conveyor belt itself, it is one or the most significant parts or a conveyor system because or the sheer numbers needed in an installation.

Three-dimensional velocity tomograms were generated on a daily basis to image mining-induced changes to the overburden above a longwall mine. The hypothesis was that a coherent redistribution of seismic velocity, due to the development of high-stress zones, could be imaged at the mine scale. Seam depth was 360 m and source location depth varied from 100 to 1000 m. Sixteen geophones were distributed over a 600 by 600 m square area on the surface above the mine. More than 12,500 events were recorded over an 18 day period. The recorded seismicity provided input for the local-earthquake tomography code, SIMULPS. Eighteen tomograms were generated and high-velocity regions correlated well with high abutment stresses. Additionally, the high-velocity regions were observed to redistribute as the longwall face retreated. These results indicate that velocity tomography can be used to provide a better understanding of temporal changes within a rock mass, and can potentially be used to produce a better understanding of the mechanisms that lead to unanticipated ground failures.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Kainantu Project is located within the New Guinea Thrust Belt in northern Papua New Guinea. The area has a long history of exploration and production, with the discovery of alluvial gold in 1928 followed by the discovery of vein deposits of gold and copper at Kora in the 1950s and the current Irumafimpa vein gold mine. Current resources on the Kora-Irumafimpa Vein System (KIVS) stand at 1.5 Moz Au, 5 Moz Ag and 217 Mlb Cu.Mineralisation in the region includes gold, silver and copper associated with mid-Miocene age mafic to felsic intrusions. The KIVS occupies a broad north-west-trending mineralised zone more than 2.5 km long and 200 m wide, with the Kora, Eutompi and Irumafimpa veins on the western side and the Judd and Upper Kora veins on the eastern side. Economic mineralisation occurs in two closely related events occupying the same strongly structurally controlled shearing (quartz-Au-telluride veins and sulfide Au-Cu-Ag veins with free Au) and is best described as a significant intrusion-related event with both epithermal and mesothermal facets that does not appear directly related to known porphyry Cu-Au systems as seen at the surface. Significant wolframite is associated with vein quartz of a slightly older age but also occupies the same shear system.The KIVS occurs within a larger mineralised area of approximately 5 × 5 km. It has complex multiphase intrusions, breccias and diatremes that are only partly delineated by drilling and comprises multiple occurrences of Au-bearing veins and porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. The area is considered to have high potential for extending the current resources and is being actively explored. The proposed recommencement of mining activities recognises the complexity of the KIVS and later disruptive faulting and will require tighter grade control systems, targeted mining techniques and a gravity circuit to maximise free Au recovery.CITATION:Vigar, A J, Lueck, B, Taylor, I, Prendergast, K and Dale, P, 2015. The contribution of grain boundary shear to total elongation, CS/E&apos;, has been measured in an Al-Zn eu-tectoid alloy that was quenched from above the invariant temperature, then annealed at 250° C to a grain size of&apos; 1.8 p. At 250°C, ks/E&apos; is low at both high and low strain rates, but reaches a maximum, estimated as 60 pct at an intermediate rate of 5 X 10 per rnin. Rate sensitivity, as measured by the index m = a log a/a log E&apos;, follows the same trend, and furthermore the maximum values of m and -cur at approximately the same strain rate. This result, combined with the metallographic observation that boundary migration enhances boundary shearing, is interpreted as supporting a previous suggestion that the high rate sensitivity characterizing super-plasticity is the result of combined boundary shearing and migration. It is suggested that the latter event relieves stress concentrations at triple points, and smoothes boundaries so that stress is governed largely by a viscous boundary shear. GrAIN boundary shear has been considered in relation to superplasticity in several recent papers.&apos; The problem has been to explain the high strain rate sensitivity of flow stress, and the variation of rate sensitivity with strain rate (E&apos;) and grain size (L). The requirements for superplasticity, small L and high T, suggest the reasonableness of an approach to high rate sensitivity involving grain boundary shear. Further support came from experiments on the A1-Cu eutectic alloy,&apos; where it was found that strain rate sensitivity of cast material annealed to produce an equiaxed, micron-size grain is always low; taking as an index of rate sensitivity m = a log a/a log <, m < 0.3. However, m in hot-worked alloy of comparable grain size can be as high as 0.7. In the cast and annealed material, each phase is a single crystal, the only boundaries are interphase boundaries, and it is, consequently, geometrically impossible for boundary shear to contribute to deformation in any major way. Other observations (for hot-worked material) were a-L at constant (low) strain rates and indications that the rate of recrystallization was enhanced as strain rate increased. As a result of this work, it was proposed that high rate sensitivity arises from a deformation mode of boundary shear associated with boundary migration. Migration serves to relieve stress concentrations at triple points, and smoothes boundaries so that they assume properties of fluid films. On the other hand, the low rate sensitivity observed at high and low strain rates reflects deformation of bulk material. Measurement of the variation of grain boundary shear with strain rate and m have not yet been made. Such measurements are important, especially in view of a proposal, differing in detail from the above, that high m arises merely from a transition between a grain boundary shear mode of deformation at low rates to a transgranular mode at high rates.2&apos;4 In the present work, the contribution of boundary shear to total deformation is measured and in addition metallographic observations are made on surfaces of deformed specimens to look at the interaction between boundary shear and migration. The Al-Zn eutectoid alloy was chosen for its homogeneous, fine-grained structure, which is obtained readily without hot-working. It has also been the subject of a previous phenom-enologically directed study. EXPERIMENTAL Material. Compression specimens, cross section 4 by + in., length \ in., were machined from a sand-cast ingot of composition 77.5 wt pct Zn, 22.5 wt pct Al. (The melt was prepared from 99.9 pct Zn and 99.99 pct Al.) After homogenization at 375°C for 50 hr, the specimens were quenched in brine and removed before the heat evolution that accompanies de -composition of the high-temperature phase.5&apos;6 The resulting microstructure, see Fig. l(a), was too fine for grain boundary sliding to be easily studied; coarser structures were obtained by annealing for various times at 2 50°C. Annealing was terminated by a brine quench. Final average intercept lengths between all grain boundaries (both interphase and those lying in a phase), L, were: 0.5 p [annealed for 15 min, Fig. (a)], 0.8, 1.1, and 1.8 p [Fig. l(b)l. Testing Procedure. An Instron machine was used for most of the compressive deformation. Tests were of two types: those in which crosshead velocity was changed in steps to measure m as a function of strain rate15 and tests at constant velocity to a fixed (engineering) strain of -0.2 (20 pct). Stress reached a steady-state value (a) which was plotted, on a logarithmic scale, against log strain rate (E&apos;). An alternate and equivalent evaluation of m was to take the slope of the log o vs log 6 curve. Time at temperature before testing was 15 min. Strain rates covered by the Instron (4 x lo-&apos; to 4 x 10&apos; per min) were insufficient; at a higher rate of 5 x lo2 per min a gas-operated testing machine was used, the gas driving a piston to compress the specimen at a controlled velocity.&apos; To obtain points on the log a vs log E&apos; curve at low rates, specimens were compressed by a dead weight. strain rate was an average value computed by dividing strain at the end of test by loading time. In some tests strain was measured at fractions of the loading time; creep rate was found to be reasonably constant.

Processing of dolomitic phosphate ores remains one of the most challenging problems in phosphate ore beneficiation. The beneficiation plant at Jhamarkotra in Rajasthan, India for example is currently using a conventional double stage flotation process which involves first a fatty acids flotation to produce a combined dolomite-apatite concentrate (bulk concentrate) from associated silicate gangue. Dolomite is then separated from this bulk concentrate by flotation with fatty acids collectors and depressing apatite with phosphoric acid and sulphuric acid. This process requires addition of large dosages of reagents (H3PO4 and H2SO4) to depress apatite and to maintain highly acidic pH during flotation. Furthermore several cleaning and scavenging stages are needed to obtain the product of desired quality. We have developed and employed a molecular modelling based methodology of designing selective reagents for apatite-dolomite separation. We have been able to take into ac-count the differences in the distribution of calcium cations on these two surfaces in our design and hence develop novel phosphonic acid based depressants for apatite-dolomite separation with con-ventional fatty acids as flotation collectors. We have demonstrated the utility and power of molecular modelling based reagents design approach through this work on beneficiation of Jhamarkotra dolomitic phosphate ore using our novel phosphonic acids based depressants at pH?s close to natural pH. It was possible to reduce the MgO content of the ore from as high as 13.3 % to 1.5% in a single stage flotation. Our flotation separation results on Jhamarkotra ore with these new phosphonic acids based tailor-made depressants for apatite-dolomite flotation separation are discussed in this paper along with results of corresponding molecular modelling computations on the same system.

Until recently, the generation of electricity was regulated in all states and the value of generation assets in a regulatory environment for ad valorem taxation were based largely on the book value of the plant plus the rate of return on capital allowed by the state regulatory agency. This method of appraising utility generation assets is inappropriate in a competitive environment because past capital expenditures are not relevant in a competitive environment. However, it is not clear what valuation methods are appropriate after restructuring. This paper identifies key problems and advantages of other appraisal methodologies and makes comments on various valuation and taxation methods.

The largest structure along the Tauern highway section between Salzburg and Villach is the 6.4-km-long Tauern Tunnel. The major geotechnical problems that came up surprisingly while driving the headings of that tunnel and their successful solution form the content of this article. A detailed discussion is presented of the special construction methods developed by systematic application of the principles of the New Austrian Tunneling Method with which even very heavily squeezing ground with large excavation areas can be mastered reliably and economically.

The paper deals with the remediation of two areas formerly utilized for the disposal of hazardous wastes in a petrochemical plant. The works, designed on the basis of the criteria of maximum safety and minimum environmental impact, consisted in the confinement of the contaminated soil and groundwater within surface caps and perimetrical cut-off walls embedded in the underlying clay layer. The cut-off wall is 0.8 m thick and has a maximum depth of 33 m: it was designed to guarantee, as a minimum, the level of safety for a landfill for hazardous wastes, in accordance with the applicable National Standards. It was constructed with self-hardening mud and with the installation of an HDPE geomembrane. The HDPE liner of the cut-off wall was then sealed to that of the capping to obtain the complete encapsulation of the contaminated soil. A system of piezometers allows the monitoring of the cut-off efficiency measuring the fluctuations of the groundwater table and testing the chemical contents. Some wells installed within the contaminated areas will contribute to guarantee the full efficiency of the system in case of state of emergency, controlling the water-table level inside the confined areas.

The Olympic Dam iron-oxide copper-gold (IOCG) uranium-silver deposit is second in size only to Norilsk, the gigantic metalliferous deposit. Olympic Dam is the largest publicly declared uranium, fifth largest copper and third largest gold resource. The deposit is typified by texturally destructive brecciation and intense iron metasomatism of the Roxby Downs Granite, bedded clastic facies rocks and mafic-ultramafic dykes. The deposit contains over 100 minerals. Copper mineralisation consists of chalcopyrite, bornite and chalcocite. Uraninite, coffinite and brannerite are the dominant uranium-bearing minerals. Gold mineralisation consists of electrum, tellurides and Au-Cu alloys. Hessite is the major silver-bearing mineral. The economic minerals are disseminated throughout the breccia matrix where the average grain sizes of the Cu-sulfide, uranium, gold and silver minerals are ~50, 20, &lt;5, &lt;5 microns, respectively.A significant number of sampling theory-based test programs have been completed since the mid-1990s to establish sampling nomographs, select appropriate sampling (ie split versus chip and interval lengths) and sample preparation protocols, quantify the errors associated with each subsampling stage, determine the practical uncertainty limits of Olympic Dam matrix-matched standards, and identify improvement opportunities related to the ongoing assaying quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) program. Invaluable knowledge and unexpected insights gained from sampling studies at Olympic Dam have helped to improve our understanding of the distribution of economic and deleterious elements within the Olympic Dam deposit.CITATION:Ehrig, K J and Pitard, F F, 2017. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo describe las técnicas para el diseño de las mallas de perforación, los programas para la simulación de la voladura y también para medir los resultados, que permitirán realizar los ajustes necesarios para mejorar los resultados de fragmentación y reducir el costo de operación de minado.

Geothermal gradients in the Gippsland Basin commonly exceed 35¦ C/km. Consequently models of thermal maturation may indicate exploration targets with an anomalous age/depth distribution. However regional geothermal models are constrained primarily by observations of surface heat flow. High geothermal gradients may simply reflect the presence of low conductivity coal beds within the basin. Heat flow data are not readily available for the Gippsland Basin. Normally special purpose drill holes are required to provide direct determinations of surface heat flow. These provide core samples for thermal conductivity and allow measurements of a stable geothermal gradient at least one year after drilling. Different indirect procedures are now required to provide estimates for the Gippsland Basin. Bottom hole temperatures can be used with suitable corrections to provide an indication of the regional geothermal gradient. However the corresponding thermal conductivities are more difficult to determine. Geophysical logs can be used to detect the major lithologies but detailed statistical analysis is required for numerical estimates. Complex mixing models are now suggested for geothermal surveys linking physical properties to variations in the mineralogy of each well. Allowing for low conductivity coal measures the data in the Gippsland Basin suggest values for heat flow consistent with regional trends in Australia. Interpretation is complicated by overprinting of transient thermal events with different time scales. Apart from the tectonics of basin evolution geothermal signatures may be complicated by regional ground water migration, the &apos;hot spot&apos; trace associated with southward younging of Cainozoic volcanism, diagenesis, and basin refraction.

First, this works carries an experimental evaluation for austempered ductile iron (ADI) as a gear material. And second, in order to provide a better understanding of the microstructural effect on the stress state of subsurface regions, a finite element method approach was considered using the submodeling tool in ANSYS 11.0. For this, ADI gears were produced from continuous cast iron bars, heat and thermochemical treated and tested in FZG test rig. The results were compared to those of carburized steel AISI 8620 and induction hardened steel AISI 4140 gears. The wear experiments were performed at the temperature of 90ºC with two torque stages: 135 N.m (running-in) and 302 N.m (steady-state). The time for pitting and spalling on the gears surfaces were measured using image analysis. The results showed a very good potential of using ADI for manufacturing gears, replacing induction hardened steels. Also, the ADI gear with smaller nodules showed higher life for pitting. In contact fatigue tests with severe load, the carburized AISI 8620 steel proved more adequate than the austempered ductile iron, showing that the mechanical properties are critical in the resistance to damage in gear contact. The austempered ductile iron with smaller nodule size showed to be very competitive with wear resistance similar to AISI 4140 steel induction hardened. With ANSYS, it was verified that the nodule size affects the gears life independently of the mechanical properties of the matrix. The results showed that the nodules indicate the presence of a concentration stress, but their size doesn’t affect the contact fatigue life as much as the total amount of nodules, regardless of the ductile iron microstructure. The size and number of nodules affects both the nucleation and the propagation stage of cracks. ADIs with higher amount of nodules have a greater wear resistance. Also, compared to the Hertz contact theory (isotropic material), the presence of graphite nodules indicates a non-isotropic material and made the maximum shear stress point moves toward the surface.

In previous papers (1, 2), the influence on the creep resistance of elements normally found in commercial lead has been recorded. The results in the present paper refer to the influence of calcium, an element which is not found naturally in lead, but which has been used commercially in the form of alloys. It was realised that calcium would act as a deoxidising agent for lead-and in fact it was with this feature in view that both calcium and magnesium were used as additions. Subsequent work (including the results given in the present paper) has tended to diminish the importance which at first seemed to be associated with the presence of oxygen in lead. The structure of the dilute calcium lead alloys has been worked out in detail (S) and the phase diagram shows the existence of limited solid solubility and a compound CaPbs.

A busca por redução de peso e maior segurança dos veículos vem impulsionando a obtenção de novos aços de elevado desempenho. Os aços bifásicos vêm sendo desenvolvidos e utilizados devido a sua considerável resistência mecânica e boa conformabilidade. No presente trabalho foram realizados os recozimentos intercríticos direto e contínuo em um aço de composição 0,121%C-0,499%Si-1,58%Mn-0,021%Cr com o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos do tempo e temperatura de intercrítica na dureza da ferrita e do constituinte MA (martensita e austenita retida). A avaliação dos resultados foi realizada por meio de microscopia óptica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e ensaios de ultramicrodureza. Foi observada a influência do tempo e da temperatura na morfologia e na quantidade de constituintes formados. Também foram verificados diferentes valores de dureza nos constituintes e ainda em distintas regiões dos grãos de ferrita. Os resultados indicaram maiores durezas para regiões próximas da interface ferrita/martensita e diminuição de dureza do constituinte MA e aumento dos valores na ferrita com a elevação do tempo.

"This paper explores the option of direct reduction smelting of the nodules from the German license area in the equatorial NE Pacific in a submerged arc furnace (SAF). An optimized slag design is proposed to separate the larger Mn-bearing stream from the valuable metals (i.e. Ni, Cu, Co, Mo). The slag optimization allows a maximum of Mn to be retained in the manganese-silicate slag on the one hand and a maximized metal recovery in a FeNiCuCo alloy on the other. This way, the goal is to make use of the complete nodules (“zero-waste”) instead of extracting only the metals Ni, Cu, and Co, which make up about 3 wt%. The process closely relates to the “Inco Process” by the Ocean Management Inc. (OMI) of the late 1970s, which was a consortium of INCO (International Nickel Company, CAN; today Vale Canada), Preussag AG & Metallgesellschaft AG (GER), DOMCO (JPN), and Sedco (USA). However, the manganese containing slag is investigated in more detail to recover FeMn, FeMnSi and/or SiMn. To optimize the process modern tools such as thermo-chemical modeling in FactSage™ have been used. [1,2]Polymetallic deep-sea manganese nodules may offer a decreased dependency of raw material imports for Germany and the EU. Currently, four European countries (United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany, and France and an Eastern European consortium (InterOcean Metal)) hold exploration licences for these nodules in international waters in the equatorial NE-Pacific. The license areas each cover 75 000 km2 of the seafloor and are located in the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCZ) south east off Hawaii at water-depths between 4000 and 6000 m. The nodules may be used as a resource for industrially important metals such as Cu, Ni, Mn as well as for technology metals like Co, Mo, V and Zn. The average chemical composition of nodules from the German license area is presented in Table 1. [3,4]"

A new explanation of the scale dependency of the strength properties of rock is presented based on the theory of extremes. A review of past work on specimen size strength relationship is followed by an introduction to the fundamentals of the underlying theory of extremes and its relationship to the scale effect on the statistical properties of the strength distribution. It is shown that the weakest link theory is directly related to extremal statistics and properties of strength distributions of rock can be derived as a function of the specimen size. Three sets of Brazilian test data are used to demonstrate the use of this approach.

To improve the air quality in large-opening stone mines by developing better ventilation techniques, including appropriate fan selection in conjunction with air-coursing methods. Background Stone mines are the most common underground large-entry mines in the United States. Data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for the year 2000 indicate that there were 162 active nonmetal underground mines in the United States, of which 117 were stone mines. Many underground stone mines are drift mines developed from previous quarry operations. Typically, these room-and-pillar mines have entries that are 20 ft or higher and at least 40 ft wide. These large dimensions lead to a very small ventilating pressure loss, even when significant air quantities move through the mine. This is especially true of drift mine operations where ventilating pressure losses of <0.25 in w.g. are common. Underground stone mines with shafts that are<200 ft deep typically have ventilating pressure losses that are <2 in w.g. The pressure losses through these mines are much lower than those of a typical coal mine or deep metal/nonmetal mine. Therefore, the ventilation techniques and principles are quite different. In addition, because of new MSHA regulations that limit the concentration of diesel particulate matter, these mines may need to greatly increase their ventilation airflow. Therefore, large-opening mines need a fan that can move large air quantities and operate at low static pressures. There are three fan types for mine ventilation: centrifugal, axial vane, and propeller. Centrifugal fans are uncommon in underground stone mines as they are often associated with mines requiring the highest of ventilation pressures. Axial vane fans are widely used in all types of mining operations. They are the most common fan type currently found in underground large-opening stone mines. However, they typically do not operate at low static pressures with high efficiency. Propeller fans are currently uncommon in underground stone mines. They are designed for low static pressures and large air quantities at higher efficiency. This fan type best suits the ventilation needs in large-opening stone mines?they produce large air quantities at low pressure losses. Mines with air shafts<100 ft long and at least 12 ft in diameter have fairly low mine static pressures and may also benefit from propeller fans.

O presente trabalho teve como foco principal à análise do efeito da adição padrão da liga inoculante (FeSi T2) no tratamento do ferro fundido nodular fabricado pela BR Metals Fundições (Barra do Piraí / RJ, Brasil). Avaliando-se assim, com análises químicas, as pastilhas retiradas associadas aos corpos de prova em formato de cunha, e análise metalográfica destes últimos, o efeito do processo de inoculação padrão através da correlação de amostras inicialmente não inoculadas e após o tratamento de inoculação e nodularização. Foi possível observar efeitos da inoculação em função do tempo de fading, que diminui a quantidade de nódulos (nódulos/mm²). Tendo como base os dados na literatura de produção de ferro fundido, onde indica que o tempo de fading faz com que ocorra a diminuição nas partículas ativas para nucleação de grafita livre.

The intent of this manual is to provide guidelines for inspectors of drilled shaft construction otherwise referred to as drilled piers, caissons or bored piles. It should also be helpful to train beginning geotechnical engineers with limited first hand experience or for geotechnical engineers who are training inspectors. It is expected that the general guidelines and procedures described here will be supplemented by local geotechnical engineers working in a particular region based on local practice and experience. Since drilled shaft construction procedures vary widely based on local geology and size of project, an all-inclusive manual is not considered practical. This manual focuses on traditional topside inspection for routine drilled shaft construction. Other inspection and evaluation methods that rely on electronic equipment are available, but these methods require extensive training and experience in the interpretation of results.
