Aqueous oxidation is a possible alternative to roasting for the processing of gold bearing arsenopyrite (FeAsS) concentrates. The reaction has been studied by voltammetry and this has shown, for the first time, that FeAsS can be readily dissolved without passivation at room temperature in dilute sulphuric acid at relatively modest oxidation potentials (0.7 V SHE). The reaction forms sulphur on the mineral surface and the oxidant consumption is thus minimal. Two practical modes of slurry oxidation are listed.

O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o efeito da deformação elástica cíclica e da deformação plástica no comportamento mecânico dos precipitados presentes em um implante fabricado em aço inoxidável UNS S31675. O teste foi iniciado com carregamentos cíclicos e finalizado com carregamento contínuo de dobramento até a ruptura total do implante, no intuito de avaliar se os precipitados sofrem fratura e/ou decoesão da matriz. A flexão ocasionada pelo teste de fadiga resultou em zonas de tração nos lados lateral e posterior e compressão nos lados medial e anterior do implante. Após 6 milhões de ciclos ocorreu a fratura parcial do implante na aresta entre os lados lateral e posterior (zonas de tração). Os resultados mostraram a existência de estrias na superfície de fratura do implante, indicando que a fadiga foi o mecanismo de falha predominante. A análise microestrutural mostrou que os precipitados não fraturaram na região de falha por fadiga, mas sofreram fratura e decoesão na região submetida a deformação plástica por dobramento. Concluiu-se que, embora os precipitados sejam considerados sítios preferenciais para nucleação de trincas de fadiga, eles são capazes de suportar carregamentos cíclicos no regime elástico, mesmo com grau de flexão da haste, onde zonas de tração e compressão são criadas.

IMFA Group is the largest producer of Charge chrome not only in India but also in Asia. This Group has plants situated at Therubali and at Choudwar. They also have a Thermal power plant at Choudwar which not only caters to the power requirement of Choudwar plant but also supplies power to Therubali. The plants are fed for Chromite ore through the captive mines namely Nuasahi Chromite mines (40.47 Ha) , Bangur Chromite mines(37.34Ha), Sukinda chromite mines (116.76 Ha), Mahagiri Chromite Mine(73.777 Ha) and Chingudipal Chromite mines (26.62 Ha). Nuasahi Chromite Mine, which is situated in Keonjhar district, is an underground mine and is based upon best technological advancements in the industry. The underground mining operation is certified under ISO-9002, ISO-14001and OHSAS 18001. This not only shows the concern for the quality, environment but also for the health of the employees. The Nuashahi is the first chromite mine to backfill the opencast excavations created during the last 50 years and carry out the production from underground area below the opencast workings. This paper deals with the state of art technology of sub-level open stopping in thin ore bodies. The under-ground mine openings was started in the year 1997. In next four years the production of chromite from underground was started.(2001). At present the mine is in a good shape with several running stopes. Today it is producing around 10,000 Mt per month of chromite. The development of the mine is carried out with an average of 200 mtr per month of tunneling. The mine is having a mechanical ventilator having a capacity of24000 M3 per hour at 50mm water gauge, thus feeding sufficient air for the persons working in underground. The mine is being dewatered through a most modern positive suction sump, having a capacity of 500 cum and operated with 120 HP pumps. After commissioning of this sump in the year 2003, the mine has taken a quantum jump in production with remarkable saving in power consumption.

This report summarizes ongoing research at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Spokane Research Laboratory, in which collision warning systems for surface mining dump trucks are being evaluated. Common accidents involve these large trucks running over smaller vehicles or pedestrian workers. Collision warning systems currently use one of several methods, including radar, radio-frequency-signal detection, or ultrasonic signals, to detect and warn of the presence of an object or person in the blind spots of the mining equipment. Most available systems have not been tested on large off-highway dump trucks. This report evaluates several systems on two sizes of trucks, a 50-ton-capacity truck commonly used in quarries and construction and a 240-ton-capacity truck commonly used in open-pit mines. Tests were conducted to determine false alarm rates, alarm effectiveness, and reliable detection zones for a person and a pickup truck. The results indicate that radar and radio-frequency identification systems show promise for this application and that several of the improved systems are ready for extensive field tests. However, challenges still exist in applying these technologies to large trucks.

Para ello, se distinguen el estudio de los factores que afectan la calidad de los pellets quemados, tales como: formación y manipulación de pellets verdes, secado de los pellets, precalentamiento de los pellets y quemado. The Konongo Gold Project is located on the western margin of the 125 Moz Ashanti Gold Belt in Ghana, West Africa. It is situated 60 km along strike of the world-class mineral system at Obuasi and is interpreted to lie on the same controlling regional shear system.The project is operated by Signature Metals, a subsidiary of the Liongold Corporation, and is managed and funded by the Liongold Corporation.Historic underground operations at Konongo produced 1.6 Moz Au at a head grade of 11.8 g/t Au, from eight operations spread along 16 km of the shear system. Mining focused almost exclusively on free-milling gold in quartz, ignoring the gold-bearing sulfide mineralisation associated with the quartz veins. Underground mining ceased in 1986.In 2013, Signature Metals re-focused the program at Konongo to assess the viability of mining the sulfide ore sustainably. This led to the first campaign review of the historic underground data and resource potential since mine closure. The Obenemase mine was the first of the eight operations to be assessed as part of this campaign.Large amounts of legacy data have survived for Obenemase and several historic resource estimations have been completed based on these data. The data typically consisted of hand-drawn sections and plans, and ledgers of commonly incomplete drilling and sampling data. Some drill core have been lost over time, but a large amount of quarter-core and half-core as well as pulps and rejects are still available. Previous resource estimates had a low confidence value because all the available assay and geological data were integrated effectively with the estimates, resulting in a lack of understanding of both grade and geological continuity.This project built a new geological model for Obenemase that greatly enhances the understanding of the controls on mineralisation using a thorough approach of re-surveying, re-cataloguing and re-logging. This model led to an increased degree of confidence and a subsequent upgrade of resource classification, and created several previously unrecognised strong exploration targets. The resulting resource estimates increased the value of the project by 100 per cent.This paper emphasises and highlights the importance of a well-understood geological model on the confidence of a resource estimate and how this may directly impact on the project’s ‘bottom line’.CITATION:Sterk, R and Reid, B, 2014. The thermite process, now approximately 80 years old, has heretofore been practiced in ceramic vessels. This paper outlines the successful production of several million pounds of alloy produced in zuater-cooled copper vessels. THE high temperatures necessary to produce fluid high-alumina slags have probably discouraged earlier workers from attempting to utilize water-cooled vessels. The following is a report of the successful application of this method, together with a report of the physical and chemical problems which had to be solved to make the process practical. About 1955, when Reading Alloys was more concerned with the production of ferrotungsten than with most other types of alloys, it was found to be exceedingly difficult to predict the reaction rate that one would experience from one tungsten ore to another . This difficulty was increased for two reasons: the physical state of the ore as received was seldom uniform, and the size of the mass to be reduced is a very important factor in developing the proper mix for the final reaction rate and temperature. For example, the reduction of ferric oxide with aluminum would theoretically produce temperatures of about 2600°C, and, in spite of the losses due to radiation, the energy is quite sufficient to produce a very fluid slag and iron effecting a very clean separation. On the other hand, the reduction of ferrous oxide with aluminum, while it is not as energetic as the first reaction, nevertheless should give temperatures above 2000"C, which should cause separation of alumina and iron, but, in practice, this is not the case and good fluid slag is not obtained. The heat of reaction, calculated from the thermo-dynamic heats of formation of the constituents of the reaction, offers a convenient guide to the feasibility of a thermite reaction. Thus, the values listed in Table I can be used as an approximate guide for estimating the results which may be expected in the reduction of various oxides and combinations of oxides using aluminum as the reducing agent. As a generalization, those reactions releasing approximately 600 cal per g of total mass represent the lower limit at which to expect separation of slag and metal. On the other hand, those reactions which release 1100 to 1200 cal per g are too violent to be used successfully without the addition of considerable inert material, such as lime, fluorspar, and so forth. Reaction rate is also a very important factor. This, of course, is governed very largely by the sizing and intermingling of the oxidant and reductant and by the starting temperature of the reactants. This is why those figures shown in Table I can only be a general guide. Further, it must be understood, that by adding powerful oxidizing agents, such as nitrates, chlorates or metallic oxides, such as molybdenum trioxide or chromium trioxide, certain problems respecting low temperatures are not necessarily solved. This is true in the addition of oxidants, such as sodium chlorate. By adding too high a concentration of sodium chlorate as a booster for a particular reduction, explosions are generated. Generally, they are of an intermittent type so as to give a Roman Candle effect to the reduction itself; with each surge resulting from a minor explosion more and more material is thrown

As the surface reserves are being depleted, more and more stone operators are seeking underground mining options. Stability of underground openings is a major concern for the safety and productivity. This paper relates to a field study conducted at a large underground limestone mine in Central Pennsylvania. Identification of hazards leading to ground failures and assessment of roof fall risks are important in mitigating injuries. Field observations at this mine were integrated with Roof Fall Risk Index (RFRI) mapping software recently developed by West Virginia University. The system is designed to combine field study data related to geologic factors, mining-induced damages, roof profile, and ground water influx to generate RFRI maps. The mine has adopted a proactive ground control program consisting of comprehensive examination of drilling and bolting logs; precision surveying of roof and rib; accurate mapping of cutters, falls, and geologic structures; and installation of extensometers and microseismic monitoring systems. Investment of time and resources has eliminated fatalities and lost-time injuries due to ground fall. This paper presents the geologic settings, mining conditions, ground control issues along with risk management and control techniques adopted at the study mine.

A busca por metais para atender demandas crescentes vem em contracorrente à diminuição dos teores nas reservas. Desta forma, a busca por novas rotas de extração de metais aliada ao desenvolvimento sustentável se faz cada vez mais necessário. O presente trabalho teve por objetivo a recuperação de cobre do lixiviado proveniente de rejeito de níquel laterítico, que contém os seguintes metais: alumínio, cobalto, cromo, cobre, ferro, magnésio, manganês, níquel e zinco. Para isto, utilizou-se o processo de troca-iônica com a resina quelante Lewatit TP 207, uma resina catiônica com grupo funcional iminodiacetato. Estudou-se o tempo de reação e a influência de pH. O tempo de reação foi variado entre 0 e 24 horas e o pH de 0.5 a 2. Não foi estudado maiores valores de pH, pois haveria precipitação do ferro. A reação de adsorção pela resina entrou em equilíbrio em 180min. Em pH 2 teve maior recuperação de cobre, pois havia menor competição entre H+ e os cátions metálicos do licor, onde foi possível recuperar 50% do cobre. Os ensaios ocorreram em batelada com agitação de 200rpm, e as análises foram feitas usando a técnica de fluorescência de raios X por energia dispersiva (EDX).

This report, which covers the period from June 15, 1974 to May 30, 1975, describes the work performed in compliance with the requirements of Contract No. H0242065 and modifications 1, 2, and 3 thereto. The purpose of the original contract was to equip the second shuttle car in the Jewell Ridge No. 12 mine, section 6R, with a refined design canopy and seats. In addition, several refinements and improvements were to be designed and installed at the same location on the cutter and the loader. However, during October 1974 in response to a request from the Technical Project Officer, the contract was modified to eliminate all of the cutter and loader tasks and substitute the design, fabrication, and installation of an improved canopy on the no. 2 roof drill in the above mentioned section of the Jewell Ridge No. 12 mine.

THE twenty-second annual meeting of the Canadian Mining Institute was held at the King Edward Hotel, Toronto, on Mar. 8, 9, and 10, and was followed on the 11th by an all-day excursion to the International Nickel Refinery at Port Colborne. The meeting was very well attended and dealt with some of the most important matters, both technical and economic, that have ever come before the Canadian Institute. The question of licensing engineers is before the Canadian members as it is before our own in this country and the attitude of the mining engineers across the border is like that of the American mining engineers, opposed to the licensing of the mining. engineer, however they may feel toward the licensing of other branches of the engineering profession. It was well pointed out that such a law, had it been in existence in the last decade or two, would probably have prevented the rapid development of Canada's mines. Whereas one civil engineer can run a line of survey as well as another, perhaps, it is only a question in his case of whether he can or cannot survey. In the case of a mining engineer employed by a man with capital to invest in a development project, unless the man with the money has confidence in the judgment of his engineer the fact that he is a professional man would carry little weight in inducing a large investment toward the development of Canada's resources. It was also pointed out that although the Institute as a whole had not passed on the matter, it would probably be opposed to legislation aiming only for self-interest, but would be heartily in accord with legislation which could be shown to be for the service of the community at large.

Os parâmetros influenciadores do processamento mineral para a concentração magnética, como granulometria das partículas, fluxo de alimentação da polpa, susceptibilidade magnética, atuam de forma conjunta em uma planta de beneficiamento. Foram analisadas amostras de polpa contendo sulfetos de níquel, cobre e metais preciosos em seis amostragens objetivando medir a eficiência de um separador magnético de tambor de 750 Gauss em um circuito primário de britagem. O rendimento do equipamento na planta industrial foi comparado com os parâmetros medidos em laboratório. Os resultados obtidos da granulometria médias das partículas da polpa para 80% e material passante (P80) foram: 150 µm, 300 µm, 163,6 µm, 146,1 µm, 287,5 µm e 164,8 µm, e a taxa de alimentação do circuito variou entre 30,2 tph e 55,2 tph, com pressão de lavagem média de 1,0 kg/cm3. As amostras foram submetidas ao balanceamento metalúrgico utilizando o software Bilmat 9.5, após os resultados dos ensaios de caracterização: ICP-metais básicos, Satmagan e LECO-S. O percentual médio de recuperação magnética do laboratório foi de 80,1%, enquanto na planta a média foi de 96,38%, com a eficiência da planta em torno de 20,8% superior à recuperação magnética em laboratório.

Results are reported for stress - relief borehole - deformation measurements made in three underground openings near open - pit mines in the Ruth mining district , Nevada . A total of 134 deformation measurements were made in 8 boreholes . These measurements determined the regional stresses in the horizons above , below, and at the elevation of nearby open - pit mine floors ; knowledge of these stress conditions is considered essential information relative to certain aspects in the designing of stable pit slopes . The determinations indicate that the stresses in the district are due to the gravitational load of the overburden in a confined stress field .

The Challenger Gold deposit was discovered in 1995 by Dominion Mining Ltd in a remote western area of the Gawler Craton in South Australia. Mine development commenced in 2002 with initial production from an open pit supplemented by ore from a very small adjacent auxiliary pit. Development of the underground mine commenced in 2004. The orebody plunge of just less than 30 degrees requires careful attention to mine design. Production from the M1 orebody, with less than 800 ounces per vertical metre (ovm) and very limited æsurgeÆ capacity, requires careful scheduling and implementation to ensure continuity of ore feed for milling. Initial production results from underground stopes included more dilution than anticipated. The narrow, high-grade zones proved to have much more complex geometry than early interpretations had indicated. Greatly improved understanding of the mineralisation controls resulted in important changes being made to the underground mine design and method. Coupled with careful control of development and drilling and blasting practices, this resulted in an immediate reduction in dilution and high recoveries of the resource. The benefits of these changes flowed through in the 2005/06 financial year, resulting in a 150 per cent increase in gold production to 108 080 oz and a sharp reduction in cash operating costs to A$280/oz. This was followed in 2006/07 with production of 108 91 oz of gold at an operating cost of $309/oz and in 2007/08 with 109 326 oz of gold at $367/oz. Production to June 2008 has been mainly from the M1 orebody, with the lowest stoping to date on the 580 m Level (615 m below surface) above development mining on the 520 Level. The rate of vertical advance of mining this orebody has averaged 150 vertical metres per year. The increased current combined JORC compliant resource and reserve position of over one million ounces, now includes the M2 and M3 orebodies with a current total average gold inventory up to 1400 - 1500 ovm. Exploration has intersected other shoots and all shoots are open at depth. The adjacent M2 and M3 orebodies are being developed for stoping. The narrow width of these zones from 1 m up to 4 m will require continued focus on ore zone definition, accurate development and careful drill and blast practice. In addition, to minimise cost increases in the current period of rapidly escalating labour, equipment, consumables and energy costs, high productivities will need to be maintained to allow the established rapid mining advance to continue at low unit costs.

Hercules? is a low nickel austenitic stainless steel developed at Mintek that has a typical composition of 9 wt% Mn, 0.05 wt% C, 2 wt% Ni, 0.25 wt% N and 16.5 wt% Cr. A more corrosion resistant version of Hercules? (Hercules? B) with 0.5 wt% Mo has also been developed. Potentiodynamic tests performed on Hercules? B in a 5 wt% sulphuric acid solution showed it to have improved corrosion resistance comparable to that of AISI 304. The effect of a varying Mn content on the corrosion resistance of Hercules? B has also been investigated and the results discussed in this paper. From the corrosion test results, it is clear that decreasing the Mn content of Hercules? B increased the corrosion rate while increasing it decreased the corrosion rate. Longwall mining systems are used to mine approximately 50 pet of the world's total underground coal production. Single entries are the predominant method of longwall development in Europe and Asia, where mining conditions are more severe than those encountered in the United States. During the 1970's and early 1980's, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. mining industry invested nearly $20 million in single-entry and related research. This report reviews the accomplishments of single-entry research in the United States and describes two U.S. single-entry field projects: the Sunnyside single-entry project in central Utah and the tunnel-boring project in northern West Virginia. Also discussed are a single-entry study conducted by North American Mining Consultants (NAMCO) and a single-entry design study conducted by Ketron, Inc. This Bureau report compares the resulting technology with European counterparts to further assess the utility and efficiency of U.S. systems.

"The High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) is a relatively new comminution technology that has been shown to be more energy efficient compared to semi-autogeneous (SAG) mills. Full and fair consideration cannot be given to HPGR-based comminution circuits in early stage projects, because presently pilot scale testing is required for assessing and sizing; pilot scale testing requires bulk samples weighing more than one tonne. A CAMIRO research program was conducted at the University of British Columbia to develop bench scale tests that would reduce the quantity of sample required to assess HPGR.Three test procedures were developed.1. The Direct Calibration Methodology calibrates piston press test results to pilot scale test results such that piston press tests can then be used to determine the energy–size reduction relationship for a range of ore types.2. The Database Calibrated Methodology, which is similar to the Direct Calibration Methodology except that it calibrates piston press tests against a database of pilot scale and piston press tests.3. The Semi-Mechanistic Methodology was developed to use piston press test results as an input for an HPGR based energy-size reduction performance model.Through utilization of these methodologies, the energy–size reduction performance of an HPGR can be predicted with minimal sample requirement. In addition, piston press testing is far more cost effective, faster, and accessible than pilot-scale HPGR testing.IntroductionOne could argue that in the future, decisions regarding selection of comminution circuits will be made primarily on the basis of energy consumption.
