The Hellyer, Fossey, Que River and Mount Charter volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits occur within the Que-Hellyer volcanics of the Mount Read volcanics, Tasmania. These deposits occur along a 6 km strike length and are hosted by the same stratigraphic unit. We use a combination of whole-rock geochemistry, short wavelength infrared (SWIR) spectrometry, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses and compiled historic whole-rock geochemical data to develop district-scale vectors towards VHMS mineralisation.Strongly sericite and K-feldspar altered rocks concentrate along a linear trend from Hellyer, through Que River, to Mount Charter. Ishikawa alteration index values and whole-rock major and trace element concentrations provide exploration vectors towards mineralisation on a regional scale as significant enrichment and depletion trends. On a deposit scale, composition variations in white mica (sericite alteration), chlorite and K-feldspar are observed and reflected in whole-rock geochemical variations. Regional SWIR data from drill core support the prevalence of phengitic mica and high-Mg chlorite within footwall alteration halos and highlight the main upflow zones of hydrothermal fluids in the VHMS district. The combined use of regional whole-rock geochemistry, SWIR and mineral chemistry is an effective way to highlight prospective areas for VHMS mineralisation in a mature exploration province.CITATION:Wu, S, Gemmell, J B, McNeill, A W and Richardson, S M, 2015. A elevação da capacidade de um compressor pode se feita de diversas maneiras: incrementando a abertura da guide vane (válvula de admissão – incremento da rotação), diminuindo a temperatura de sucção, abrindo a válvula de recirculação, etc. Neste trabalho exploraremos essa elevação para compressores de Nitrogênio gasoso através do aumento da pressão de sucção destes equipamentos. Este incremento da pressão de sucção foi obtido através da redução da perda de carga na sucção do compressor. Temos dois possíveis benefícios neste caso: o aumento da vazão volumétrica mantendo a mesma pressão de descarga, ou a redução do consumo de energia do equipamento através da redução da abertura da válvula de admissão (guide vane) para disponibilizar uma mesma vazão volumétrica. Essa otimização do sistema foi obtida através da substituição do filtro de sucção do equipamento por um de maior diâmetro e, consequentemente, menor perda de carga. Originalmente o filtro encontrava-se numa tubulação com menor diâmetro: um novo filtro foi especificado e instalado num trecho de tubulação com maior diâmetro.

In this study, the cyclonic static microbubble flotation column (FCSMC) was investigated for fluorite beneficiation. The structure and principle of the specially designed column are described. Fluorite samples from the tungsten separation tailings of the Shizhuyuan Mine, Chenzhou, Hunan Province, P.R. China, were tested using a small-scale continuous flotation test unit, and concentrates with a fluorite grade higher than 98% were obtained. One rougher and three cleaner stages in the FCSMC achieved the same separation performance as one rougher and eight cleaners in conventional flotation cells. This greatly simplified the flotation circuit and reduced operating costs.

There is much ongoing work in research and development of new processes for the recovery and recycling of met.a.ls and other materials from various waste and scrap streams. Commercialization of such new technologies requires the bringing together and successful execution of a considerable effort involving a variety of activities. These include process conceptualization, research and development, detailed design and construction, and then plant startup and operation. Processes evolve through all of these steps by engineering due diligence, making objective and critical analyses of results, and troubleshooting processing steps to, hopefully, arrive at a sequence that has the best chance to succeed operationally and economically. After a summary review of the above steps, several processes will be described in more detail that provide mostly successful examples of the above procedures. Finally, some observations will be made on areas that will become critical in the near future to the success of new processes for wastes and residues.

"It has long been recognized that mining workers subjected to high levels of hand-transmitted vibration may suffer from vibration-related complaints. Prolonged exposure to whole-body vibration may also result in adverse effects. In this study, the effects of vibration on mining workers are examined. Previous work documenting the occurrence of vibration-related disease is reviewed. From this work, it is apparent that operators of hand-held pneumatic rock drills are exposed to a significant risk of developing vibration disease. Vibration levels recorded on the rock drills now in use are presented and shown to exceed levels recommended by a proposed ISO standard.IntroductionThe possible harmful effects of exposure to excessive vibration levels have long been recognized, particularly among operators of hand-held tools. Numerous cases have been reported of a vasospastic disorder commonly known as vibration white finger disease (VWFD), which was a term coined by the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council in Scotland in 1970(1 ), Those suffering with the disorder have frequent vasospastic attacks in which the fingers, hand and, in advanced cases, the lower arm turn white and numb, usually after a cold stimulus. Advanced stages of VWFD have been reported in which the skin becomes ulcerated and gangrenousm. The incidence of the disease has been particularly serious in the forest industry due to the extensive use of chain saws. However, in recent years, the introduction of antivibration saws has resulted in a significant reduction in the occurrence of the disease.In a recent report for the Canadian Department of Supply and Services - Energy, Mines and Resources, Hutton & Brubaker considered the effects of vibration on workers in the mining industry. In this report, the physiological and medical effects of vibration were considered, relevant vibration standards were discussed, previous vibration measurements were documented and field measurements carried out. In the present paper, the results recorded in this study will be summarized, together with results that have been previously published relating to vibration levels existing in the mining industry."

Grinding efficiency in a vertical stirred mill is affected by a wide range of process and mill configuration variables. Of these, the media fill, size, and intrinsic density have a significant effect on power draw and grinding performance. Media-related factors that influence grinding performance include, e.g.,a higher media filling providing additional particle breakage sites, or a lower bead density decreasing the running torque at a given media filling. It has been estimated that the grinding media can cause up to a 30% change in the specific energy required to grind. FLSmidth has generally recommended that the intrinsic density (specific gravity) of the grinding media be more than triple the slurry density. This density difference helps to ensure that sufficient stress intensity is generated in the mill to provide particle breakage. It also reduces the chance of media ?float? if there is a spike in either slurry density or slurry flow rate. The VXPmills have historically operated at slurry density values between 1.2 and 1.5 kg/L, which translates to nominal bead intrinsic density range between 3.6 and 4.5 kg/L. The current trend towards regrinding bulk flotation concentrates to even finer sizes, to improve recoveries of fine grained minerals, has provided motivation to consider closed-circuit operation of stirred media mills. The slurry density in this application is typically higher than in open-circuit operation due to the higher percent solids in cyclone underflows. An additional effect is that closed-circuit operation increases the potential for media float due to higher flow rates as slurry is recycled to the mill. The normal progression in extending the operating range of existing equipment is to carry out laboratory testing before pilot-scale and plant-scale trials. The results presented in this paper examine the media density to slurry density ratio and its effect on grinding performance.

As fibras sintéticas vêm sendo gradualmente substituídas por fibras naturais. Em comparação com a fibra sintética, fibra natural demonstrou vantagens econômicas e ambientais. Visto que apresenta características interfaciais com matrizes poliméricas que favorecem a absorção de energia de alto impacto pela estrutura. No entanto, até agora pouco foi avaliado sobre a fibra de cânhamo incorporada em matrizes poliméricas. Este estudo tem o objetivo de avaliar a resistência ao impacto deste tipo de compósito com matriz de poliéster reforçada com diferentes porcentagens de fibras de cânhamo. A resistência ao impacto aumenta proporcionalmente com a quantidade relativa de fibras incorporadas como reforço na matriz polimérica. Este desempenho foi relacionado com a dificuldade de ruptura imposta pelas fibras, resultante da interação da matriz de fibra de cânhamo / poliéster de forma a ajudar a absorção da energia de impacto.

The urban environment presents special challenges for the design and construction of earth retention systems. Complications arising from difficult subsurface conditions are compounded by the presence of urban infrastructure and existing and prior construction. The proximity of adjacent structures as well as intense prior use can cause special concerns including the potential for archeological artifacts or contaminated ground or ground water. Utilities and structures may be particularly vulnerable to the effects of ground movement, dewatering and vibrations. Difficulty of access, congestion and limited work areas may severely restrict means and methods of construction. Dewatering may be limited or prohibited because of concerns for disposal of clean or contaminated water, depletion of aquifers, drawing of contaminants to the site or dewatering induced settlements.

"Cameco's McArthur River is the world's largest high grade uranium mine. Production started in late 1999. Cameco carried out the engineering design and construction management for the McArthur River project, including all aspects of mining, ore handling and ore transportation. The ore composition was expected to vary dramatically (0 to 30% U3O8; 0 to 25% clay; etc). To cope with the composition swings, sizing screens were selected to provide classification in the grinding circuit. The grinding circuit started up close to the design to provide minus 500 micron slurry. The 50% solids (wt) ground ore slurry proved to be difficult to transport to and process at the Key Lake Mill. Slurry containing high concentrations of high density pitchblende (about spgr 8.0) and low concentration of stabilizing clays, would settle in containers. Ore transport efficiency to Key Lake was found to be unacceptable.A test classification cyclone was installed in the grinding circuit at McArthur River early in 2002. The cyclone operating parameters were not typical, but the cyclone was made to work very successfully. Transportation efficiency to Key Lake increased due to more stable slurry. Preferentially ground (fine) pitchblende particles were easier to leach at Key Lake. The radiation exposure for operators and maintenance personnel to handle the more stable slurry was also reduced.The classification sizing screens were removed from the McArthur River grinding circuit and replaced by permanent classification cyclones late in 2002.INTRODUCTIONThe McArthur River mine and Key Lake mill operations are located in northern Saskatchewan, approximately 650 and 720 kilometres from Saskatoon, respectively. Figure 1 is a location map. McArthur River is the world's largest, high-grade uranium mine, with a production capacity of 18.7 million pounds U3O8 annually. (Rosner and Edwards 1998, Dyck 2000, Jamrozek 2000, Rodgers 2001) Proven and probable reserves are more than 473 million pounds U3O8. McArthur River ore, grading on average 21% U3O8, is milled at Cameco's Key Lake operation, 80 kilometres southwest by road. McArthur River production began in December 1999."

A diverse selection of rockbolt designs and resin anchors are available for use in underground mines. Research in recent years at the UNSW Mining Research Centre led to the construction of a rockbolt pull-testing facility. This facility has subsequently been upgraded, commissioned and initial test work has been completed to verify the pull-test process. A test program has been completed with the objective to understand the load transfer mechanism and improve the general performance of rockbolts. This paper describes the results of this research. Faites des recherches ces dernières années à l'UNSW que le Centre de la Recherche Minier a mené à la construction d'une facilité de l'essai de la traction du rockbolt. Cette facilité a été améliorée par la suite, le travail de l'épreuve en commission et initial a été complété pour vérifier le processus de la traction-épreuve. Un programme de l'épreuve a été complété avec l'objectif comprendre le mécanisme du transfert de la charge et améliorer la performance générale de rockbolts. This contribution examines the effect of feedstock sampling before the sorting stage of polyethylene terephtalate (PET) bottle recycling. Batches of waste PET bottles may contain non-PET bottles which need to be removed by sorting. Any residual presence of PVC is detrimental for the quality of products manufactured from recycled PET. The maximum tolerated concentration of PVC in cleaned PET is extremely low, which places high demands on the recovery of PVC achieved by sorting. To be confident of attaining the desired PET quality after sorting, acceptance sampling of truckloads of PET bottles may take place prior to sorting. It is shown that accounting for sampling uncertainty requires that the sorting process achieves a consistently high recovery of PVC bottles.CITATION:Glass, H J and Dominy, S C, 2017. An average of 13 mine workers are killed each year by being run over or pinned by mobile mining equipment. At surface mines, these accidents commonly involve large dump trucks that drive over a smaller vehicle or a person that is in the dump truck’s blind spot. One method of detecting a person or another vehicle in a blind spot is to use some type of sensor technology such as radar or radio-frequency identification (RFID). Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health tested a number of commercially available and experimental sensors that monitor obstacles in a vehicle’s blind spots. None of the sensors had been previously applied to the specific problem of rigid-frame surface mining trucks. This report documents the procedures and results of tests conducted after RFID and radar systems were mounted on a 50-ton-capacity dump truck. It was determined that both RFID and radar technology show promise for detecting obstacles in the blind spots of mining equipment; however, more development work is needed to meet the unique requirements of mining equipment and the mine environment.

Early disseminated copper mineralization at Quebrada Blanca, Chile, accompanied 38 million year old quartz monzonite stocks and dikes. Early mineralization was followed by hydrothermal mineralization, mineralized breccias, and post-mineral faulting. After supergene leaching and enrichment, Quebrada Blanca was buried under late Tertiary gravels, and then partially re- exposed in Quaternary time. Based on work to date the orebody appears to contain more than one hundred million tons of plus one percent secondarily enriched copper ore, overlying several hundred million tons of protore averaging more than 0.5% copper. A source of industrial water appears to have been located. Pilot scale metallurgical tests, mine planning, and feasibility studies are in progress.

The use of extended workdays or compressed workweeks (regular shift lengths exceeding 8 h) is attracting growing interest in many industries using continuous operations. While extended workdays promise increased worker satisfaction due to more days off, including weekends and holidays, there are legitimate concerns about the potential effects on the health and safety of such a schedule. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted a study at a Canadian underground copper, lead, and zinc mining operation that was designed to study the safety and performance implications of extended workdays. Measures were taken before and after a change from the old 8-h continuous schedule to the new 12-h continuous schedule, including behavioral performance measures to analyze perceptual-motor changes, continuous heart-rate monitoring and aerobic capacity to measure physical fatigue, a variety of self-report questionnaires to measure perceived adaption and satisfaction with the new schedule, and pulmonary-respiratory measures to examine air contaminant exposure. Based upon the overall acceptance of the new schedule by the workers and lack of change in fatigue-sensitive behavioral and physiological performance measures, this study recommends that the mine retain the 12-h schedule. However, certain precautionary measures are suggested to insure the safety of the workers.

Este trabalho teve por objetivo estudar a redução por hidrogênio de sínteres produzidos com coque e carvão vegetal. Para isso, foram realizados 6 ensaios de sinterização substituindo o coque por carvão vegetal como combustível do processo. As substituições foram de 0%, 8%, 16%, 25%, 50% e 100%. As amostras com substituições de 0%, 50% e 100% foram reduzidas em termobalança, durante 6 horas, em temperatura de 1000°C, utilizando uma mistura de gases contendo Argônio – 10% Hidrogênio. Os resultados mostraram que, para as misturas produzidas, o sínter fabricado com carvão vegetal diminuiu os índices de produção da sinterização e de resistência do sínter. Contudo, o sínter produzido utilizando somente carvão vegetal como combustível, apresentou maior redutibilidade.

Este trabalho avalia o processamento por moagem de alta energia bola em TiB2 no efeito da inoculação de alumínio puro. O pó TiB2 comercial foi processado no moinho de alta energia do tipo SPEX e misturado com alumínio em pó de alta pureza. A mistura foi conformada em pastilhas e sinterizadas em atmosfera inerte. As pastilhas foram introduzidas em alumínio puro fundido em teores de 0,15 e 0,30% em peso de TiB2 e solidificado por resfriamento natural. A análise macrografica mostrou um grande aumento no refino de grão por inoculação com TiB2 processado do que em comparação com o material como recebido.

Os cilindros acabadores de cantoneiras e barras são de ferro fundido nodular coquilhado que normalmente atendem às necessidades de qualidade e produtividade destes produtos. O problema ocorre quando se laminam cantoneiras de pequena espessura ou barras com requisitos de baixa rugosidade superficial. Uma das soluções é o uso de cilindros com anéis de metal duro (Carboneto de Tungstênio) que apresentam grande resistência a abrasão e com excelente qualidade superficial e produtividade, mas por outro lado têm baixa resistência ao impacto e ao choque térmico, requerendo cuidados especiais na prática operacional e na refrigeração para evitar fraturas. Há diversas técnicas de montagem dos anéis nos eixos e sistemas de refrigeração para garantirem a integridade dos anéis.

The theory of the Askania magnetometer, as well as a complete discussion of all factors influencing magnetometer readings, is very ably described by J. Wallace Joyce. We will assume that the reader is thoroughly familiar with this theory and we will use whenever possible the same notations for the physical values involved in the theory. On the other hand, we believe that the principal formulas of the magnetometer can be deduced much more easily by the use of differential calculus than by the methods employed by Joyce. Consequently, we are presenting herewith a resume of the theory of the vertical magnetometer in order to determine the correct formula of the temperature coefficient which we propose to compensate.
